Tufenkian Historic Yerevan Hotel, Yerevan
BACKGROUND It’s the latest hotel to join the growing chain of properties under the Tufenkian Heritage Hotels brand, which promises an authentic Armenian experience. The company is the brainchild of American-Armenian businessman and philanthropist, James Tufenkian, with hotels located in some of Armenia’s most picturesque destinations.
WHAT’S IT LIKE? Made of black Armenian Tu stone and with architecture that represents late 19th century Yerevan, a city with a heritage all but razed during Soviet rule. Cosy yet grand, understated yet quietly luxurious, the hotel has a quintessentially Armenian charm and character unrivalled by the international brands. Designed by architect and interior designer Clodagh, the hotel is also smokefree, which is a huge plus in a country where smoking in public is not prohibited, and many people do still smoke. WHERE IS IT? Located at the crossroads of Hanrapetutyan and Buzand Streets, next to the Yerevan arts and crafts market, Vernissage, and behind the Soviet-designed Republic Square, the hotel is within walking distance of the majority of the city’s most-loved attractions and a plethora of fantastic dining destinations.
ROOMS There are 84 rooms and one presidential suite, which is located on the top floor. I stayed in a junior suite next door to this, which o ered breathtaking sweeping views across the hilly landscape. The room was large and peppered with Armenian touches, from traditional carpets to handmade throws. The suite featured a walk-in wardrobe, enormous bathroom with a bath and shower and herbal toiletries, a king-size bed and ample workspace. There were no tea- or co ee-making facilities, but there was a fridge.
FOOD AND DRINK The hotel has a 24-hour bar lounge and the Kharpert restaurant, serving a blend of European
and Armenian cuisine. It has a wonderful terrace to enjoy the sun-drenched mornings as the city starts to wake up. Breakfast o ers a very authentic bu et spread including local cheese and meats, fruits and hot and cold options. Guests received a 10 per cent discount at the restaurant during our stay.
BUSINESS Unlike other hotels where breakfast didn’t start until 8am or 9am, breakfast here was served from 7am, catering to the busy business traveller. Wi-fi was reliable and there were plenty of nice spots to work or hold casual meetings, in addition to the business centre. The hotel’s conference centre can host up to 50 people too.

VERDICT In terms of the city’s major hotels, this provides the most authentic Armenian hospitality experience in terms of ambiance and dining given most other properties are operated by international brands. If it wasn’t for the lack of gym, a personal priority for me when I travel, it would certainly be my favourite hotel in the capital. When you stay at the Tufenkian, you know you are in Armenia.
