BACKGROUND If the walls of the Mayflower could talk, they would speak of US presidents, Middle Eastern kings, and world leaders who have stayed, dined or partied at the hotel. Before the pandemic, this landmark hotel, which dates back to 1925, was a vibrant social hub – the gathering place for politicians and high society.

WHAT’S IT LIKE? Steeped in history and exuding elegance, this 581-room property spans an entire city block. A Marriott Autograph Collection hotel, former US President Harry Truman called it the “second best address in Washington, D.C.”, after the White House, of course. It boasts modern elegant design, tall ceilings and amenities that make you feel at home.

WHERE IS IT? Located in the Farragut North Metro area of the city, it’s considered ‘the’ place to stay. With a central location, it’s within easy reach of all of the US capital’s attractions and landmarks, including the White House.

ROOMS The Deluxe Suites are spacious but cosy, modern, but classic. They feature a large bedroom, living room, bathroom with walk-in shower, a mini kitchen with a sink, plus a sizeable closet. Luxury in-room amenities make the stay at the Mayflower all the more relaxing.

FOOD AND DRINK During my visit the main restaurant, Edgar Bar & Kitchen, was closed due to the pandemic, but during the day, packaged foods and drinks could be purchased. The venue is named after former FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, as it was his favourite place to dine – he ate there every night for 20 years straight. When it’s open it serves American brasserie-inspired classics with a modern twist, using local ingredients.

BUSINESS With 27 event rooms available, there is a space for every occasion. The largest venue, the Grand Ballroom, has served as the backdrop for every Presidential Inaugural Ball, from Calvin Coolidge to Ronald Reagan, and can accommodate up to 1,000 guests.

VERDICT The Mayflower is a luxurious home-away-from-home in the heart of the US capital city. It’s also pet friendly, which is proving popular given more people are taking staycations. Allyson Portee
