ConnECTIng MInDS As the UAE’s bid to host the World Expo 2020 enters the last lap, Dubai is pulling out all the stops to ensure that it’s a success. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has promised that the UAE’s bid will be nothing short of astonishing as he pledges to host the best Expo ever. The visionary, who has plotted much of the global positioning of Dubai – a city that in less than 40 years has grown to be one an incubator for new ideals and models – pledges to bring minds together for a better future. “We will astonish the world,” he promises, adding: “We want to welcome more than 25 million people so that they can see the best of what the human mind can achieve across cultures and races.” Equally enthusiastic is his wife HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, who presented the bid during the last crucial round at the Bureau International des Expositions in Paris. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Emirates airline, is chairing the UAE’s Higher Committee Expo 2020 bid. A 438- hectare site in Jebel Ali, equidistant between Dubai and Abu Dhabi and close to the new Dubai World Central Airport, has been earmarked for the global event. A 100 million euro Expo Partnership Fund has been launched to enhance Dubai’s offer. “The fund will support projects of varying size, scale and stage of development but with the same objective of fostering a lasting positive impact for all of our communities,” Princess Haya says, promising: “Dubai Expo 2020 will create a new, unique and meaningful legacy – an Expo that will be the engine of innovation.” More details about this initiative, which will be open to ideas from any country, will be available on the Expo website later this summer. Sport in dubai moves into its summer quarters – the massive pro-standard, air conditioned arena at dubai World Trade Centre. For two full months, dubai Sports World will pack the globe’s favourite sports into one world-class facility. JULIUS BAER ARE POLO CHAMPS Recently the Julius baer team brought home the Julius baer beach Polo Cup. The Julius team won a thrilling 6-3 match over the Maradiva team in the presence of a sell-out audience which boasted Lionel Richie and polo enthusiast Khalaf al Habtoor, Chairman of the al Habtoor Group of Companies, as chief guests for the day. Swapping turf for surf, beach polo is arguably the world’s most entertaining sport. a charity auction was held prior to the closing ceremony, showcasing replicas of white horses which were built during the two-day event and painted by attending children. all four horses were sold, for a total of dhs130,000. in addition, the Julius baer management pledged a cheque of dhs50,000 - bringing the total to dhs180,000. all proceeds were donated to the Noor dubai Foundation. DOUBLE THE FLOWER POWER The largest vertical garden in the world, an Edible Plants Garden from which visitors can pick their own fruits and vegetables and a butterfly Garden, made up of an impressive 10,000 live butterflies bred in the uaE for the first time, are all set to make their debut in dubai. akar Landscaping & agriculture Company, the people behind the 45-million flower Miracle Garden, recently announced plans to commence work on phase two of the popular visitor attraction, with completion expected in October 2013. Plans also include an indoor cut flower design inspired by dubai’s iconic buildings, new children’s attractions, a Flower Hills and Mountains themed garden and a retail area where visitors can shop and dine. a creatively decorated train will be installed to transport visitors around the garden.

PORSCHE GOES CLASSICAL Grammy award nominee amjad ali Khan, master of the Sarod, recently performed at dubai’s Madinat Theatre. The musical evening was sponsored by Porsche Centre dubai to mark 50 years of the iconic Porsche 911 car. ali Khan, regarded as one of india's greatest musicians, was joined by his sons, amaan ali Khan (35) and ayaan ali Khan (33). a regular musician at the Carnegie Hall, Royal albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Kennedy Center, House of Commons, the Sydney Opera House and many more renowned concert halls across the globe, amjad has been wowing audiences for more than 50 years. His sons share his passion for music and are among the world’s most talented players. after the masterful performance at the Madinat, the pair treated the students of dubai’s Modern High School to a oneoff master class, sharing the nuances of playing the sarod. The sarod is a stringed musical instrument, used mainly in indian classical music, with a deep and weighty sound.

RECORD SETTING CEREAL Cereal kings Kellogg’s Corn Flakes created three new Guinness World Records in april 2013. DEEP aND MEaNINgFuL dubai Creek has been at the centre of the emirate’s development, making it perfect for a trip across the water or down memory lane. words Nusrat ali

or most visitors, the first introduction to the historic Dubai Creek is an idyllic dinner cruise along its meandering course, but there’s more to the Creek than just the cruise. The emirate’s move to have the water inlet listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site signifies just that. The 14km-long Creek has been the nucleus of so many aspects of Dubai’s growth, spanning from trade to architecture and even ecology, that one can say the emirate has actually evolved from here. Dubai’s business ethos can be traced back to the Creek. For centuries, wooden dhows have plied the historical body of water, transporting spices and textiles from the Subcontinent, Iran and Africa. Its water also attracted bounty hunters: divers plunged into its depths in search of pearls. The Creek became even more important after the discovery of oil in the UAE and it became a crucial link to the outside world. Now not only were goods plying across the seas, but so were people. Those looking for better prospects came sailing down the Creek and settled on its banks, bringing with them their culture. The renowned Bastakiya quarter is one of the results of this exchange. The wind tower houses in the area, named after its earliest settlers - traders from Bastak in Iran - are heralded as the finest examples of early Arabian architectural sensibilities. One visit to the Creek and it becomes obvious why the site should definitely be on the UNESCO list of heritage sites. Not only has Dubai carefully preserved the physical appearance and economic role of the Creek but the authentic feel of the place is intact. The dhows can still be seen loading and off-loading their goods at the Creek, the only evident innovation being the replacement of the traditional sails with modern engines. Around the Creek stand the Fahidi Fort, traditional souks still bustling with business, graceful mosques and the historic windtowered residential quarters of Shindagha and Bastakiya.

UNESCO experts are expected to visit the Creek site in September for an evaluation but the city will have to wait until June 2014 for the verdict to be revealed. IN REEL LIFE Didn’t get a chance to visit the Creek? Just watch UAE-based Professor Tim Kennedy’s documentary, The Floating Life of Dubai Creek , which showcases the daily toil of the dhow boat-hands. Filmed over a course of 18 months, which involved working every weekend from sunrise to sunset, Kennedy’s documentary has been screened in the US, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and was recipient of the ‘Best Film Award’ at the 2012 Ares Film Festival in Italy. “This 20-minute documentary captures the essential identity of Dubai Creek today, and preserves its story in Dubai’s dramatic timeline,” explains Kennedy. “Dubai Creek is currently being considered as a World Heritage site by UNESCO and it has been a primary feature of the city’s development: Dubai simply would not be here without the Creek.” PRETTY IN PINK It’s tough convincing most people that Dubai has flamingos, so vividly is the picture of a desert city imprinted in their minds. A quick trip to the Ras AL Khor Wildlife Sanctuary at the head of Dubai Creek will help tackle the resistance. This marshy stretch of land where the Creek ends is home to more than 20,000 water birds of 67 species and over 500 different types of flora and fauna. Pink flamingos can be seen wading, settling and feeding amongst the watery reed beds and occasionally taking flight. An important stopover on the East African – West Asian flyway, Ras Al Khor is the nation’s first Ramsar Wetland Site. To catch a glimpse of pink simply

stand atop the three viewing platforms, along the Al Awir Road, equipped with binoculars for closer views, or take the RTA water bus between Dubai Festival City and Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. The 30-minute round trip ferry rides costs Dhs25. THE CRITERIa To win a place on the UNESCO list, nominated sites must meet at least one out of ten criteria. Dubai Creek checks three. UNESCO describes Dubai Creek and its surrounding neighborhood as “an outstanding and universally valuable site where natural, architectural and cultural components create a unique urban landscape where influences and human interactions from the entire Gulf region mingle into a coherent ensemble preserving both tangible and intangible heritage values.” The Outstanding Universal Value of the site has been decided on the following basis: • Dubai Creek and its surrounding neighbourhood exhibit an important interchange of human values and influences. For instance, the architectural styles of wind-towers and courtyard houses. • It is exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition based on the development of international commerce and free trade in the Gulf region. • Dubai is an outstanding example of a traditional settlement representative of human interaction with a unique maritime environment. Dubai’s early settlers thrived on maritime commerce, pearling and fishing.

aCROSS THE uaE The UNESCO Heritage inspectors are not new to the UAE. Six other sites across the country have submitted their bids. • Umm Al Nar Island: Comprising a settlement and a cemetery, it is the largest site on the southern shores of the Arabian Gulf. A universally important coastal site, it is the first to have been discovered and excavated in the UAE. • Sir Bu Nair Island: Considered one of the most important hawksbill nesting sites within the entire Arabian Gulf. • Addour Site: One of the largest archaeological sites in the UAE. • Central Region in the emirate of Sharjah: being considered for the vast indigenous flora and fauna it supports. The main sites of the region include the Site of Maliha Mountain, the Site of Maliha, the Site of Fayah Mountain, the Site of Al Buhais Mountain, and the Site of Mlaih Maintain. • Al Bidya Mosque: The UAE’s oldest mosque. • The Cultural Sites of Al Ain (Hafit, Hili, Bidaa Bint Saud and Oases Areas) are already listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. By 1956 it was synonymous with bohemian living but its fame was catapulted by the film And God Created Woman, starring a certain young ingénue actress, Brigitte Bardot. The rest, as they say, is history. While the village of St Tropez remains relatively unchanged (though there are more designer boutiques including Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton than in the past) it retains its charisma and is a pleasure to visit throughout the year. The best time is undoubtedly from April to early June and then in September. In between it is invaded by le jet set and their mega yachts which, although fun to watch, cause major congestion on the roads and on the small, cobbled streets of the little port.

hile Mick Jagger may have married Bianca here in the early ’70s, St Tropez’s history actually dates back to 1892 when the painter Paul Signac decided to settle in the region – attracted by its natural beauty. His villa, La Hune, became a meeting point for his artist friends Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard and Albert Marquet and all were inspired by the light and colours of the area. So much so, that it lead to the painting styles of Pointillism and Fauvism. Later, writers such as Colette and Antoine de Saint-Exupery followed. In the 20th century the region became a magnet for Parisian poets Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, actress Marlene Dietrich and

MARKET DAYS Really? Yes, you’ll be glad you got up early to visit the market, held every Tuesday and Saturday morning. Get there before the buzz and you’ll maybe see Giorgio Armani, Ivana Trump or Tracey Emin on the Place des Lices buying some fresh figs, flowers or generally enjoying the atmosphere. There’s a great brocante or antique section to this bi-weekly event. Best buys are however the cashmere jumpers (on sale throughout the summer) as well as the rabbit fur gilets! A must-do afterwards or before is breakfast at Le Clemenceau or Café des Arts.

PORT AHOY! It’s de rigueur for the A-list to disembark from a Riva or bigger boat in the little port. P Diddy, the King of Sweden and Naomi Campbell are just some of the names who are regular visitors. For the best vantage point of all the comings and goings of the big yachts, a coffee at Le Senequier is part of the St Tropez legend. Its red canopies beckon in the intense heat, but for a more elevated viewpoint the little-known balcony of the Hotel Sube is also great. Go there for a sundowner and you’ll feel glad you’re away from the throng.

TO THE BEACHES La Route des Plages which exits St Tropez points to the variety of beach clubs which exist and for which the place is known; Tahiti is one of the oldest and is still going strong. Pack your Missoni bikini, Pucci sarong and a lot of attitude and you’ll fit right in. Models of the moment, Cara and Poppy Delevigne, head to Nikki Beach, while old Hollywood such as Joan Collins and Elton John prefer Club 55. For a more laid-back vibe Bora Bora is hard to beat. Remember, though, that going to the beach in St Tropez is not really about getting a suntan (you’ve got that before you arrive!); it’s about dancing, drinking some Provencal wines and generally posing. You’ll get ‘papped’ as well as the beaches are filled with itinerant photographers who take your photo in black and white (and are readily available the next day). La Pâtisserie Sénéquier

LA MAISON DES CONFITURES If you want to step back in time and also take a really authentic souvenir home with you, look no further than the artisanal jam shop ‘La Maison des Confitures’ just outside Gassin village and less than 15 minutes from St Tropez village. Every conceivable flavour is available and home-made on the premises – opt for a jelly, marmalade, chutney or jam and you’ll be guaranteed to take home a taste of the Cote d’Azur.

RAMATUELLE The medieval village of Ramatuelle is a good contrast to the port-side glamour of St Tropez and only a short drive too. Take the Route des Plages and you’ll see Ramatuelle on the hillside beckoning. It has two weekly markets also – on Thursday and Sunday – as well as weekly night markets where local craftsmen display their wares. In August, Ramatuelle hosts a theatre festival and it’s packed with the intelligentsia and French acting elite…While parking is difficult, there’s no shortage of excellent restaurants and bistros as well as superb views over the surrounding countryside.

WINE TASTING You’ll find yourself in the middle of Cote de Provence country if you stay in or near St Tropez, which means your beverage of choice is usually a light, crisp rose at lunch or later. Chateau Barbeyrolles and Chateau Minuty are considered some of the best in the region and they

offer tours and tastings to customers and visitors alike. Stop by the side of the road and you’ll often see the rose bushes intertwined with the vines – giving the grapes the unmistakable scent and taste of rose petals.

GET THE LOOK There is nowhere like St Tropez and the look is rather defined. Starting at the bottom: on your feet you should be wearing a pair of Rondini leather sandals (as favoured by Jackie O) or the ubiquitous Tropezian sandals made by K Jacques. Thereafter, the look you want is part hippy chick, part Victoria’s Secret model. There are lots of suede fringed dresses in St Tropez as well as linen shifts worn over itsy bitsy bikinis. Two of the best boutiques to get the look at are Au Soleil de St Tropez and Gas!

NIGHT LIFE It should be noted that everything in St Tropez happens late – lunch being around 2.30-3.00pm; dinner around 9.30-10.00pm; and going out circa midnight. Partying in St Tropez therefore is not for the faint-hearted. Stamina and sequins are required! Start the night at Le Papagayo or Maison Blanche for a drink and then head onwards to one of the famous boites or nightclubs. Les Caves du Roy is the most famous – located in the Hotel Byblos. Getting past the velvet rope is quite a feat and once inside you can expect to pay 50 euros for each drink (even soft ones). But it’s worth the mayhem at least once. This is where Dodi brought Diana THAT summer, and you’ll likely spot a few supermodels among the clientele. The VIP Room is also popular but with a younger crowd.

POLO AND PAINTING There’s plenty to do for the culture vulture and sports fanatic alike in St Tropez this summer. At the town’s Annonciade Museum, a major exhibition of Maurice de Vlaminck’s work will be shown until October. De Vlaminck was one of the leading artists of the fauvism school along with Derain and Matisse. The exhibition focusses on his most avant-garde period from 1900 to 1914. Meanwhile, the International Polo Cup runs from 4 to 14 July, with a special polo team parade along the port of St Tropez on 15th July. It’s a lively procession which is matched by the high goal play. The polo season ends with the BMW Polo Masters tournament held at Gassin on the 26th and 27th July and is a unique night time polo event followed by the inevitable Polo Night Party!

What is Ramadan? Ramadan is the holiest time of the year for Muslims around the world. The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, it is believed that the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at this time. The highlight of the month is the fast that believers observe from dawn to dusk. With the intent to instil humility, patience and spirituality, believers are asked to abstain from eating, drinking and impure thoughts during the fasting period. Ramadan is also believed to be the month of mercy, when noble intentions and good deeds bring greater reward than the rest of the year. As such many people especially undertake charitable work, observe chastity and attempt to read the Holy Quran at this time. A sense of spirituality also settles in, business slows down and familial relationships and religious devotion become the centre of everyday life. 24

Ramadan will commence in the UAE from 10 July 2013 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; its actual dates on the Gregorian calendar vary from year to year as they are determined by the Islamic lunar calendar. The last day of fasting will be 8 August 2013, with the festival of Eid Al Fitr which marks the end of the holy month being celebrated from 9 August.

Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection but at a busy airport it can be difficult to find a quiet spot. DXB International’s five-star terminals and concourses break the norm and offer travellers pockets of peace amongst the buzz of activity. Muslim travellers can fulfil their spiritual needs before the journey at prayer rooms located in all three terminals (at both Departures and Arrivals) and at Concourse A (CA) with separate facilities for men and women. In T1, prayer rooms can be found near gates C6 and C22 in Departures and near gate B21 in Terminal 3 Departures. A prayer room is also available in both the Emirates First and Business Class lounges for the convenience of their respective passengers. Each prayer room has its own adjoining ablution area; if you prefer to shower beforehand, facilities are available near gates B14 and B22 and in the Emirates First and Business Class Lounges in T3 and CA. T2 has five prayer rooms in the following areas: Check-In, near the security screening area after check-in; two rooms in the Departures hall; and one in the baggage reclaim area. BE INFORMED Ramadan is a month dedicated to sawm or fasting, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. From dawn to dusk, Muslims will abstain from food, drink and tobacco and concentrate on spiritual renewal. After dusk there is Iftar – a meal to break the fast, followed by Suhour, a late-night feast before the sun comes up. Ramadan is also about zakat or charity, another of the five pillars of Islam, and you’ll notice people going out of their way to extend kindness to others.

BE POLITE A little goes a long way, especially if you extend the traditional greetings to colleagues or business associates who are fasting at this time of year. ‘Ramadan Kareem’ or ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ are the most common greetings. GIVE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT No one is forced to fast but those who do will appreciate some acknowledgement. It’s also a common courtesy not to eat or drink in their presence, especially if you share an office environment. In hotels you will see specially marked areas for tourists, while eating, drinking or smoking in public or in a taxi is not recommended.

TIPS FOR TRAVELLERS PRACTICE CHARITY Local friends may extend invitations to share Iftar or offer traditional sweets. It would be impolite to refuse these acts of generosity. Show similar kindness and give to local charities.

DRESS MODESTLY Out of respect, tourists should dress appropriately during this period. In malls and in other public areas it is not recommended to wear skimpy, see-through clothes that could cause offence. Covering up from neck to knee is the usual guideline.

BE AWARE OF BUSINESS HOURS Like any holiday, Ramadan affects business. Many venues operate with limited hours and staff, so try to book accommodation, transport and tours in advance to avoid disruptions. Also call ahead to ensure someone’s available to meet your needs. Booking traditional ‘breakfast or lunch meetings’ is also not advised if you are here on business. As for restaurants, they close by day, although some are open for delivery services. Instead, reserve ahead at restaurants that open for lunch in tourist areas.

AhlAn WA SAhlAn As Director of Media and Advertising at Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), Moza Buti Al Youha is literally talking the world into coming to Dubai, helping to reach a goal of of 20 million tourists by 2020. dv talked to the Emirati during the recent Arabian Travel Mart.

The target to achieve 20 million visitors a year by 2020 is an ambitious one. How do you hope to achieve this? There are two main ways through which we plan to achieve our target - first by enhancing the tourism offer itself and second by enhancing our marketing efforts. There are some very exciting projects we are working on which you will see being rolled out over the next year or so.

What are the challenges you foresee? Now that people know Dubai, our approach must shift. We must evolve. Now, our goal is not only to tempt potential visitors to come to Dubai but also to make them stay longer once they’re here. We must reach out to new markets without compromising our share in existing markets. 66

Dubai is known for its spectacular shopping and entertainment festivals. What other kinds of events do you plan?

What is the biggest misconception you've encountered about Dubai? Some people avoid visiting Dubai during Ramadan but during this period there are lots of activities happening around the city, and visitors can still enjoy shopping and gastronomic experiences in the late hours of the night. And it’s a very social time where everyone is focused on peace and family and friends.

We want to move from a regional events hub to a global events and entertainment destination, and want to attract more events to Dubai. Events like sports, music, arts, culture, food - anything that will position the city as an exciting place to visit. To ensure a coordinated approach, recently both the Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (organiser of festivals such as Dubai Summer Surprises and Dubai Shopping Festival) and Dubai Calendar were recently integrated into DTCM.

Your favourite place to socialise in Dubai? Dubai Mall and Mirdif City Centre.

Do you travel a lot in your line of work? Our job is very busy and there is a lot to do here! I tend to stay in Dubai but do travel for work occasionally, as and when required.

Where was your last holiday? Bangkok, Thailand.

How do you explore a new city? By travelling in local taxis or walking around. I like to take my time and not just rush around to see the main attractions - I like to try to see a city how a resident would see it.

What are your absolute must-haves when you travel? Phone, wallet and travel guide.

Do you travel light? Yes, I do. I used to take a lot of things with me when I travelled and then I realised that most of the things stayed in my suitcase the whole time.

How do you overcome jetlag? Just rest it out, stay indoors and spend time with my family.

You never leave home without? Keys, phone and wallet.

Which is Dubai’s best kept secret? The city’s lush green landscapes and pristine beaches.
