Editor’s Letter

For our cover, we are proud to have partnered with a powerhouse of a woman who I would count as not only someone I admire, as her story is exceptional, but also a friend.

Co-founder and COO of Cymbiotika, Durana Elmi is a powerhouse of strength, resilience and determination, yet she retains a femininity we have long admired. Durana Elmi’s journey is a testament to the art of resilience – grace under pressure, strength in adversity, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference. On our cover shoot, we took the time to understand what it’s taken to build a global wellness brand and continue to strive for excellence whilst having empathy on a daily basis in The Art of Resilience

on page 14. It is for this reason we wanted to share with you two special covers this month, to represent that resilience can show up in several forms; inner strength and how you show that, is up to you.

In this issue, we focus on stories from women who have overcome adversity, challenges or taken on big dreams and made them happen, no matter what it took. It is an incredibly inspiring issue and we look forward to you discovering stories that give you strength, bolster your belief in yourself and allow you to believe that anything is possible.

During this very special Holy month, allow yourself the time for introspection and in turn renewal. When we look within – we always find the answers. LOOK WITHIN.

“It’s about harmony. I embrace my strength, assertiveness, and drive while also leaning into intuition, empathy, and grace. Both energies are essential for leadership”

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like? My morning routine is sacred. I begin with a moment of gratitude, setting my intentions for the day. Then, I start with hot water and lemon, followed by Vitamin C, super greens, and glutathione. After that, I hit the gym, enjoy a smoothie, and then wake up my girls – ready to conquer the day. What was the vision from the outset for Cymbiotika, and how did you know it was the right time? To be honest, the timing was luck. We found ourselves at an intersection in life where we intentionally wanted to create something meaningful –something that would genuinely make a difference in the world and help people live happier, healthier lives.

How do you lean into your strengths, and how do you delegate to support areas where you are less strong? I focus on what I do best – vision, leadership, and innovation – while surrounding myself with an incredible team who complements my weaknesses. Delegation is about trust, and I ensure that every team member feels empowered in their role.

What is the DNA of Cymbiotika, and has it evolved over time? At its core, Cymbiotika is about merging nature with science to create the highest quality wellness products. Our mission is unwavering, but our approach evolves as we innovate and adapt to new discoveries.

How has your background informed how you operate professionally in business? My upbringing instilled resilience and a deep appreciation for hard work. I bring that same level of commitment and adaptability into business, ensuring that every decision aligns with our mission and values. How do you scale without compromising on quality? Quality is non-negotiable. We prioritise sourcing the best ingredients, rigorous testing, and maintaining integrity in our production. Scaling is about being methodical – growth should never come at the cost of excellence.

What is the key to growing a community as a brand? Authenticity and connection. Our customers trust us because we are transparent and genuinely care about their well-being.

Engagement, education, and providing real value are crucial to building a loyal community.

What has been the biggest challenge since launching, and how did you overcome it? Navigating rapid growth while maintaining our core values. We overcame this by staying true to our mission, hiring the right people, and ensuring that every expansion step was aligned with our vision.

What has been the biggest reward? Seeing how our products positively impact people’s lives. Hearing stories of transformation and wellness makes every challenge worth it.

Who has inspired you in business and life, and why? I draw inspiration from strong, resilient women who have paved the way before me, as well as leaders who operate with both vision and heart.

How do you balance masculine and feminine energy? It’s about harmony. I embrace my strength, assertiveness, and drive while also leaning into intuition, empathy, and grace. Both energies are essential for leadership.

Do you believe in visualisation, and how has it impacted your life? Absolutely. Visualisation is powerful – it helps me manifest my goals and stay focused on the bigger picture. Seeing my success before it happens keeps me motivated. What daily practices do you undertake to ensure you stay in your best energy? Mindfulness, movement, nourishing food, and surrounding myself with positive energy. Prioritising self-care allows me to show up as my best self.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own brand or business? Start with a clear mission. Passion and purpose will drive you through the toughest times. Be patient, stay adaptable, and never compromise on quality or integrity.

This is the Resilience Issue – what makes you resilient, even in the most testing times? Resilience comes from perspective. I remind myself that challenges are opportunities for growth. I also rely on tools like meditation, journaling, and apps that keep me organised and grounded.

ILLUMINATING SPACES

MESSIKA PROUDLY UNVEILS ITS LATEST CAMPAIGN, “CONNECTING LIGHT AND SOUND,” FEATURING EMIRATI SINGER AND FRIEND OF THE MAISON, BALQEES FATHI. SET AGAINST THE SWEEPING DESERT DUNES, THE CAMPAIGN CELEBRATES THE DEEP-ROOTED TRADITIONS OF THE HOLY MONTH, WHERE BALQEES ILLUMINATES THE SPACE WITH HER LOVE FOR MUSIC AND DIAMONDS

WORDS: CAMILLE MACAWILI

How does it feel to be at the forefront of Messika’s “Connecting Light and Sound” Ramadan campaign? I feel truly delighted. The story Messika is telling for the Ramadan campaign deeply speaks to my culture and values. I really felt that it resonates with my personality, my family heritage, and the Ramadan rituals. So, I’m incredibly happy and feel deeply connected. Since you joined the Messika family as Friend of the Maison last year, what have been some of your favorite moments in the partnership so far? Cannes has been one of the most significant events that strengthened my relationship with Valérie Messika and the Messika brand. It allowed our partnership to flourish, grow, and embark on a new journey of success. With each piece I’ve worn since signing my ambassadorship with Valérie, I feel that every creation tells a story. The story is still unfolding, and it’s already achieving great

success. This Ramadan campaign also plays a crucial role in shaping this journey, and I can’t wait for it to be revealed. What is your Ramadan style? And what are your top tips for accessorizing and dressing up for Ramadan? Ramadan is all about modesty, and I always embrace that in what I wear. I naturally gravitate toward my traditional roots, and during Ramadan, we tend to wear traditional cloth-

ing more often – especially during this holy month when we reflect on our origins and heritage. When it comes to accessories, I love layering a few jewelry pieces that capture attention while complementing the culture and traditional attire.

What are your favourite jewellery pieces from the shoot? The belt! I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. I even told Valérie that it was such a smart design – the combination of gold and diamonds speaks deeply to Arabian women, as it’s a big part of our culture. Since Ramadan is about reconnecting with our roots and traditions, the belt is an essential piece in this collection. I also adored the three-row So Move necklace that I wore in the campaign. It’s a piece I’m eager to own – it’s incredibly precious, and I’d love to add it to my jewellery collection. The campaign reflects on fostering connections with family through music. What are your favourite Ramadan traditions you’re most looking forward to? Family gatherings –especially with both of my parents. Since we’re all busy throughout the year, Ramadan is the one time when we can sit together, talk, and spend quality time day and night. This tradition goes back to my childhood – my father would play the oud during Ramadan, and I would sing holy songs that connect to our culture. For me, Ramadan is all about these moments with family, and I can’t wait to experience them again. How did your father’s love for music inspire you to follow a musical journey? Without him, I wouldn’t be the artist I am today. I remember being around seven or eight years old when I first started to understand music through his oud playing. His musical notes have stayed with me ever since, and he played a crucial role in paving the way for my career. This is The Resilience Issue – how do you tap into resilience during challenging times? Let me tell you something before I forget – Valérie Messika embodies resilience, and I do too. My entire persona is built on resilience. This campaign doesn’t just speak to strong, independent Arabian and Arabian Western women – it speaks to all women in the region, especially during this significant time of the year.

The Aesthetes

Eight women of influence tell us how they are dressing for Ramadan

Faiza Bouguessa

What is your style signifier – how would you describe your style? My style is a balance of structure, elegance and ease, a reflection of Bouguessa’s design philosophy. I’m drawn to timeless silhouettes, refined tailoring, and neutral tones, with a focus on well-crafted pieces that feel both effortless and polished. I love pieces that feel powerful yet understated. Most workdays, I blend power and ease, often reaching for one of my oversized blazers with our Type 02 jeans and a Moez T-shirt or loose trousers with minimal sandals or The Row loafers. For important meetings or formal occasions, I opt for the full suit, and heels, a look that makes me feel confident. How does your style change during Ramadan? During Ramadan, my style remains true to its essence but becomes more relaxed and even more minimal. I lean towards black, flowing silhouettes, airy fabrics, and effortless layering, prioritising comfort without compromising elegance. I also like softer, serene tones, whites, creams, and earthy hues that reflect the spirit of the month. It’s a time of simplicity and mindfulness, and my wardrobe mirrors that sentiment.

Mthayel Al Ali

ENTREPRENEUR AND CONTENT CREATOR

What is your style signifier – how would you describe your style? I would describe my style as a balance between tradition and modernity, always with a touch of effortless elegance. I gravitate towards modest silhouettes that feel powerful yet so feminine, often incorporating structured tailoring, rich textures, and a neutral color palette with subtle statement details. My approach to fashion is deeply per-

sonal – it’s not just about trends but about storytelling, cultural appreciation, and authenticity. I love mixing contemporary cuts with classic Emirati influences, ensuring that every look reflects my identity and values. How does your style change during Ramadan? Whether I’m attending iftar gatherings or spending quiet moments in reflection, I choose pieces that feel authentic, effortless, and aligned with the spirit of the month. Ramadan is a deeply spiritual time, and my style

naturally adapts to reflect the essence of the month – graceful, modest, and intentional. I lean towards flowing abayas, Mkhawar, and airy fabrics that exude comfort while maintaining a refined aesthetic. Recently i’ve been obsessed with Black but usually who knows me earthy tones, soft pastels, and intricate embroidery are my vibe. I also find myself drawn to accessories that carry sentimental value – whether it’s a cherished piece of jewellery or a handcrafted piece that tells a story.

Mthayel Al Ali

Saba Sabbagh

FREELANCE CREATIVE DIRECTOR

What is your style signifier – how would you describe your style? My style is a refined balance of minimalism and quiet luxury, focusing on structure, texture, and timeless silhouettes. I gravitate towards a neutral or monochrome palette, allowing the details, whether it’s a sharp shoulder, an elongated sleeve, or a perfectly tailored fit to take center stage. My approach to fashion isn’t about trends; it’s about creating a mood, an effortless elegance that feels both modern and enduring.

Jewellery plays a key role in my style. I believe fine jewellery should feel like an extension of the wearer, subtle yet powerful, effortlessly elevating any look. I gravitate towards bold, sculptural pieces and timeless classics that add depth and a sense of individuality. A structured blazer or fluid dress can be transformed entirely with the right earrings, a striking ring, or a delicate yet statement-making necklace.

There’s also an element of storytelling in how I dress. Fashion, for me, is more than just putting together an outfit; it’s about evoking a feeling and carrying that energy with you. Whether it’s a sharply tailored ensemble or a flowing evening dress, my style

is about confidence, strong, effortless, and timeless, always accented with the perfect jewellery to complete the story.

How does your style change during Ramadan? During Ramadan, my style shifts towards more fluid and comfortable silhouettes while maintaining the minimalism and sophistication I always gravitate towards. I opt for relaxed tailoring, flowing fabrics like silk and crepe, and pieces that drape effortlessly, allowing for both movement and ease. Comfort is key, but never at the expense of refinement. I lean into simplicity with a focus on interesting cuts and silhouettes clean lines, asymmetric details, and structured yet airy pieces that feel effortless yet intentional. Rather than heavy embellishments, I let the shape and movement of a piece speak for itself. Soft, neutral tones and monochrome looks remain a constant in my wardrobe, creating a sense of understated elegance.

Jewellery plays an even more important role during this time, adding a quiet state-

ment to my looks. Whether it’s sculptural gold earrings or a delicate yet striking ring, I choose pieces that feel timeless and personal. Ramadan is a time of reflection and gatherings, and my wardrobe mirrors that - … elegant, effortless, and thoughtfully curated.

Raheel Al Roudhan

What is your style signifier – how would you describe your style? My style is closely aligned with the FoS style – so of course that’s where I shop! I like to mix smarter pieces with cooler, street wear items. So this could be tailoring with sneakers or flat jewelled pumps, or denim with a really bold and dressy sculptural top. But I am not immune to gorgeous evening wear. Is there anything better than getting seriously dressed up for an occasion? I think not! As long as I can wear sneakers the day after!

Saba Sabbagh
Raheel Al Roudhan

How does your style change during Ramadan? Ramadan is a chance for me to spend more time with my family so I choose comfortable items that are also respectful of the moment. This could be beautiful matching separates and longer dresses that move easily. I also look forward to dressing up during Eid celebrations. We have just launched Taller Marmo on Fabric of Society and all their styles are perfectly suited to the occasion. The fabrics, cuts and colours are perfection.

Jennifer Kolomoni

STYLIST AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR

What is your style signifier – how would you describe your style? Much like me, my style has evolved and matured a lot over the years. My style used to be edgy, eclectic when I was in uni. I worked part time at Diesel and would listen to artists like Santigold and Gossip, MIA and Destiny’s Child... I was a real sponge and the result of my environment was alternative punk meets R&B chick. I also got a mohawk at one point, heavily inspired by Rihanna but Grace Jones was my reference for everything.

Today, I’m more refined and my lifestyle requires me to be more comfortable, casual and laid back during the day, so I go for classic timeless pieces that allow me freedom of movement. I’ve outgrown micro trends but I’m still very much with the times and current. In the evening is when I have all the fun. I’m much more glamorous, timeless and feminine with an edge. I like to challenge myself from time to time to be more bold in fashion as well as in life. I love a good catsuit or a bright red dress that makes a statement.

On some days I feel like leaning into the 90s classic minimalism of Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green in Friends and then some days the glamour costume of Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago inspires me a lot but I find costumes in period films generally very exciting to watch. Lately I’m inspired by the bold glamour of Diana Ross, the eclectic 70s references of Solange Knowles and the effortlessness of Taylor Russel. The style of character Joan Clayton in Girlfriends and also Tracee Ellis Ross in real life, I find that me and her could very much be friends. How does your style change during Ramadan? I’ve lived in Dubai for 12 years now and I’ve become quite accustomed to the culture and customs so I try to be as modest as possible all while still staying true to my style and aesthetic. For Iftar, I enjoy wearing maxi dresses, kaftans and I experiment with easy abayas. I usually also avoid very bold colours and anything that feels “extreme” or “edgy”. I tend to wear a more muted colour palette

like beige, white, brown. I feel it makes more sense to make everything easier on the eye during this time of the year.

Moni Hasbini

CEO – JEWELLERY LABEL HIBA HASBINI

What is your style signifier – how would you describe your style? I think my biggest style signifier is my jewellery, as I have a jewellery brand with my mother, I’m constantly changing my stack, mixing up different collections from our brand, HIBA HASBINI. I would describe my style as classic, with a chic twist. I always try to focus on building a longterm wardrobe, with things that can be worn multiple times for different looks. What completes my looks is usually my jewellery, bags, shoes, and accessories. I love having a pop of

Jennifer Kolomoni
Moni Hasbini

colour in all my looks, and some of my favorite colours that I usually integrate into my looks are pink, orange, yellow, and red/burgundy. How does your style change during Ramadan? During Ramadan, I get to explore a side of fashion which is different to my style allyear-long. I usually mostly wear outfits with abayas, kaftans, and things that I wouldn’t usually wear outside the holy month. I really enjoy exploring that side of fashion as I get to style different pieces, and I also focus a lot on supporting local homegrown brands, which usually make the chicest, most stylish abayas and kaftans. I’ve already started preparing my Ramadan outfits which are more conservative, and I’m very excited to start wearing them during the holy month and showcasing the looks on TikTok.

Nora Al Shaikh

What is your style signifier – how would you describe your style? My style is all about bold sophistication with a modern edge. I love clean, structured silhouettes but always with an unexpected detail – something that makes a statement without trying too hard. I’m drawn to pieces that feel effortless yet polished, striking that perfect balance between confidence and ease.

How does your style change during Ramadan? During Ramadan, my style becomes more refined with a touch of cultural and traditional influences. I gravitate toward flowy silhouettes, rich textures, and statement details that feel effortlessly chic yet comfort-

able. I love incorporating vintage accessories, especially bold earrings, to add character and depth to my looks. It’s a time when I embrace elegance with a modern edge, blending tradition with contemporary.

Alia Al Khafajy

What is your style signifier – how would you describe your style? My style is very dependent on my mood – but for the most part I’d say effortless smart/casual. For special occasions or when dressing up I tend to go more classic/chic. I would say ¾ of my wardrobes are timeless staples and basics which I can style and wear differently each time, with a few unique one-of-a-kind in between for that

edge. I’m not really one to follow “trends” and instead prefer timeless and effortless style. I like to spend on items that have been well-made in terms of design, tailoring and most importantly fabric composition. I’m also quite nostalgic so you’ll find me styling items from my mother’s old wardrobes or my father’s suit blazers.

How does your style change during Ramadan? In Ramadan there’s a 180 degree turn in my wardrobe – you’ll only ever find me in Jalabiyas and Abayas. And I don’t mean Kaftan and Tunics, it’s the traditional Mkhawar for each day of the month (daytime and evening)! It’s the only time of the year you’ll find me in that all month round. However, the colours and designs I choose to be in are still true to my style in the sense that they’re still less busy with regards to patterns, and colours and tones I’d usually gravitate towards.

Cutting Edge

Anne de Vergeron, CEO of Repossi and Isabelle Dubern Mallevays, Co-Founder of Invisible Collection discuss exploring artistic potential to create “Jewels for the Home” – a capsule collection of home decor firmly rooted in Repossi’s avant-garde design codes

WORDS: CAMILLE MACAWILI

Repossi stands out in its own domain in the jewellery space. How were the key pillars of Repossi translated into this collection? Anne de Vergeron (ADV): Unlike other jewellery houses, Repossi has always been the most avant-garde Maison on Place Vendôme, rethinking jewellery design and reinventing its codes for almost 70 years. Our primary sources of inspiration stem from both contemporary and ancient forms of art, architecture, and design in its broadest sense This year, we continue our artistic dialogue - initiated with MoMA in 2020 and Centre Pompidou last year - by partnering with a collectible design brand to create a capsule collection of home décor. Four designers from The Invisible Collection were invited to explore our universe of iconic creations, drawing inspiration and transposing their essence into furniture and objects.

You’ve collaborated with star talents from Invisible Collection’s impressive roster. What’s been the key in creating this collection? ADV: Our approach was rooted in a shared passion for creativity, superior craftsmanship and harmonious working process with Isabelle Dubern and the genius talents working with the Invisible Collection. At Repossi, we believe that the fusion of diverse creative minds leads to extraordinary results. Dubern has a unique understanding of Repossi jewellery and the brand’s DNA. Each artist brought its unique vision and expertise, translating the four Repossi key collections – Antifer, Serti sur Vide, Blast and Berbere – in a different dimension of design and craftsmanship. This synergy enabled us to explore new concepts resulting in a collection that is truly unique.

What were the influences and inspiration behind the ‘Jewels for the Home’ pieces - what makes them unique? Isabelle Dubern Mallevays (IDM): The collaboration stems from a shared passion for the arts décoratifs and its unique aesthetic. Each designer from Invisible Collection found inspiration from Repossi’s emblematic collections to create four exceptional pieces. What makes them truly special and unique is that they are original works, each conceived specifically for this collaboration, and reflecting both Repossi’s DNA and the designer’s signature style and taste. What hurdles did you encounter when you launched, and how did you overcome them? IDM: Frankly, this has been one of the smoothest collaborations ever, there was so much enthusiasm and willingness from everyone involved including artists and ateliers. So, if there were any hurdles, they were most logistical, such as lead times. For instance, the Martini tables were not finished on time because the glass masters in Venice took longer than expected. However, in the end, this only added to the excitement, as we couldn’t wait to see this beautiful design come to life. Alternatively, what have been the learnings? IDM: Every encounter, every collaboration, is a learning opportunity – both personally and professionally. In this case, I realised the importance of shared values and passions, which made the entire process much smoother. And I was deeply moved by Anne de Vergeron’s kindness and vision, which for me means a lot in this world. This special collaboration bridges between different creative practices. What do you think is the value of this collaboration to both brands? ADV: The collaboration between Repossi and the Invisible Collection has highlighted the versatility of the arts, demonstrating their ability to excel across different creative disciplines. Its value lies in the synergy it creates, allowing us to explore new horizons of our respective fields. Collaborating with the exceptional talents from the Invisible Collection has provided an opportunity to infuse our Maison with diverse

perspectives and reaffirm our unwavering dedication to the worlds of art, architecture, and design.

The four-piece capsule has been unveiled in Paris. How was it received? ADV: The collection was met with great enthusiasm from our partners, clients and friends of the House. The craftsmanship details, an exquisite design, and sophisticated aesthetics resonated deeply with our audience, highlighting the successful fusion of diverse creative practices. The collection was particularly recognised for capturing the essence of both Repossi’s avant-garde spirit and the Invisible Collection’s artistic flair.

These home objects will be travelling as well to the Repossi boutique in Dubai. Why is the Middle East market important for Repossi? ADV: In the Middle East market, we observe a deep appreciation for contemporary art, artistic expression and craftsmanship, which aligns perfectly with the core values of Repossi. The recent opening of the Museum of Diriyah Art Futures exemplifies this cultural affinity. Our audience in the Middle East share our passion for creativity and the preservation of heritage, making our brand highly resonant in this region. Our collaboration with the Invisible Collection and the introduction of these unique design objects are set to bring a fresh perspective and unparalleled craftsmanship to the Middle Eastern market, enriching its vibrant landscape of art and design.

This is The Resilience Issue. How do you tap into resilience during testing times? IDM: Right now, so many people around the world are enduring unimaginable pain and destruction – wars, climate catastrophes, famine, and human rights violations – that I would feel embarrassed to speak about resilience in comparison. When I look at my own life, I realise how blessed I am. As long as my children are healthy, and I can continue making a living from my passion, I’m just thankful. ADV: Hope and resilience will be paramount for many people around the world in the coming years. During challenging times, I must remember how fortunate I am to be surrounded by my family and to hold such a fulfilling role at Repossi.

“Our collaboration with the Invisible Collection and the introduction of these unique design objects are set to bring a fresh perspective and unparalleled craftsmanship to the Middle Eastern market, enriching its vibrant landscape of art and design”

HERITAGE & HEART

BUTHAINA AL ZADJALI, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF BTHAINA, ON CHAMPIONING OMANI HERITAGE ON A GLOBAL SCALE AND A RESILIENT YET REFINED APPROACH TO OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

“I draw strength from my heritage, the support of my family, and the
confidence of the women who wear my designs”

What are the core values and hallmark styles that define the brand’s aesthetic? BTHAINA is built on luxury, elegance, and a deep respect for Omani and Arab heritage. I strive to showcase traditional elements in a modern way, ensuring that each piece tells a story of cultural richness and sophistication. My designs are defined by intricate details, high craftsmanship, and luxurious fabrics that create a distinctive aesthetic. Tell us more about the inspiration behind your pieces and the woman you design for. My designs are inspired by the beauty of nature and the richness of Omani heritage. I design for a woman who values elegance and individuality, someone who appreciates the artistry behind fashion and seeks pieces that reflect her strength and confidence. How important is it to use traditional techniques, and how do you combine them with contemporary design? Traditional craftsmanship is at the heart of my brand. I believe that preserving heritage techniques, such as intricate hand embroidery and motifs inspired by Omani architecture, is essential. By blending these elements with contemporary cuts and luxurious materials, I create pieces that are both time-

less and relevant to the modern woman. This year, we see the brand joining Moda Operandi’s designer roster. How does it feel to be part of Moda Operandi’s The Caftan Collection showcase, and was this always the plan? Being part of Moda Operandi’s The Caftan Collection is a proud milestone for me. It’s an incredible platform that allows my designs to reach a global audience while staying true to my brand’s essence. It has always been my vision to bring Omani-inspired fashion to the world, and this opportunity reaffirms that I am on the right path. To you, what are the hero pieces of this edit? Every piece in this collection is special, but I consider the ones that feature intricate Omani embroidery and innovative silhouettes to be the standout pieces. These designs truly embody the fusion of heritage and modernity, which is at the core of BTHAINA. How do you balance localisation with global relevance as a brand? My approach is to stay authentic while ensuring my designs resonate with women worldwide. I incorporate cultural elements in a way that feels luxurious and sophisticated, making them appealing beyond the regional market. By focusing on exceptional craftsmanship and

timeless elegance, I create designs that transcend borders.

What are your favourite Ramadan rituals? Ramadan is a time of family and reflection for me. I cherish the warmth of gathering with loved ones for iftar and the sense of peace that comes with this special month. It’s also a time when I find inspiration for new designs, drawing from the traditions and beauty of the season.

How do you style the pieces in your collection from dusk to dawn? Versatility is key in my designs. Many pieces can be worn effortlessly during the day with minimal accessories and then elevated for the evening with statement belts or elegant jewellery. The goal is to create outfits that offer both comfort and sophistication.

This is The Resilience Issue – during challenging times, how do you tap into resilience? Resilience, for me, comes from passion and belief in my vision. As an Omani designer striving for global recognition, I have faced challenges, but I see each obstacle as a lesson and an opportunity to grow. I draw strength from my heritage, the support of my family, and the confidence of the women who wear my designs.

“Resilience, for me, comes from passion and belief in my vision”

Soft Power

Shereen Al Hosh, founder of Dubai-based womenswear label La Plain, on her career milestone debuting the brand at Moda Operandi and how she’s tapping into resiliency to build and scale a brand

WORDS: CAMILLE MACAWILI
“For me, tapping into resilience starts with perspective. When challenges arise, I try to focus on the bigger picture – why I started this journey in the first place and what the ultimate goal is”

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? The first 30 minutes of my day are essential for setting the tone for everything that follows. I typically wake up around 6:30am, and I start with a glass of water to hydrate myself. Then, I like to take a few minutes for some light stretching or yoga to get my body moving and clear my mind for the day ahead. I’ve found that taking those few minutes of mindfulness really helps me feel grounded. Next, I head to the kitchen to make a quick breakfast and coffee. I then like to check my emails, especially those that have come in overnight. I also take a look at any fashion news or trends to get a sense of what’s happening in the industry. It’s my way of staying connected with the larger fashion landscape while keeping a steady pace for the day. What inspired you to start your own brandwas this your goal from the outset? In 2022, when I returned home from an enlightening period of travelling, I felt incredibly invigorated and inspired to create something from these experiences. I have always loved fashion and being creative, so I felt it was time to take that lifelong dream to the next level and start my own brand. La Plain is a haven of authenticity and creative inspiration, with the aim to make women feel empowered in what they wear. What really inspired me to take the leap was seeing how much creative freedom could come with owning your own brand. I realised that I could tell the stories I wanted to tell through my designs, without any boundaries. Fashion is about expressing yourself, and having the opportunity to build something that reflects my vision and

values felt like the next natural step. There were definitely moments of doubt and uncertainty, but I always knew in my gut that it was what I needed to do.

What pillars of DNA define the La Plain as a brand? At the core of La Plain, there are three key pillars that define the brand: impeccable quality, timeless design, and empowerment. Impeccable quality is something we take immense pride in. Every piece in our collection is crafted with the utmost attention to detail, from the selection of materials to the construction and finishing. Timeless design is another cornerstone. I’m passionate about creating pieces that transcend trends and seasons. Each collection is designed to be both versatile and enduring, offering women wardrobe staples they can wear for years to come. Empowerment is central to everything we do at La Plain. Fashion has always been a powerful way for women to express their individuality and identity. Through our collections, I aim to inspire women to embrace their uniqueness and feel confident in their choices.

Every place I visit brings a new perspective, whether it’s the night sky in Scandinavia, the architecture in Paris, or the textures of fabrics I see in local markets. Travel has taught me to appreciate diversity, not just in style but in what fashion means to different people across the world. My brand aesthetic reflects that mix of elegance with versatility drawing from a wide range of global influences but always with a refined, timeless feel. This year, we see the brand joining Moda Operandi’s designer roster. How does it feel to be part of Moda Operandi’s The Caftan Collection showcase and was this always the plan? Being part of Moda Operandi’s The Caftan Collection showcase is an incredible honor! I’m really excited to see how the collection resonates with Moda Operandi’s clientele. The platform is known for its curated selection of both emerging and established designers, so to be included among such a distinguished group is truly a milestone for the brand. As for whether this was always the plan, I’d say it was more of a long-term aspiration rather than an immediate goal. From the beginning, I knew I wanted to build a brand that could eventually be recognised globally, and collaborations like this one with Moda Operandi are an amazing opportunity to introduce La Plain to a wider audience. We’ve always focused on quality and craftsmanship, and the showcase allows us to highlight those elements in an exciting and unique way.

To you, what are the hero pieces of this edit? The Zorya Embroidered Silk Organza Dress is understated yet flattering on all body types; The Serenelle Ruffled Crepe Caftan with the rose detailing on the shoulder is a statement piece; The Isadora Beaded Organza Dress is a flowy caftan and a favourite amongst my clients for the flowy silhouette and feminine details.

How has your love of travel influenced your designs and overall brand aesthetic? Travel has been a huge influence on both my designs and the overall aesthetic of the brand.

How do you style the pieces in your collection from dusk to dawn? Styling the pieces from my collection from dusk to dawn is all about versatility and creating looks that can transition seamlessly throughout the day. For daytime, I’ll pair one of our flowy caftans with simple accessories and flat sandals for a comfortable yet elevated look. It’s effortless, easy to wear, and perfect for a day spent in the city or at a casual brunch.

As the evening approaches, I like to add a bit more drama to the look – whether that’s a bold statement necklace, a metallic

“During difficult times, it’s the collective strength of the people I

clutch, or a sleek pair of heels. The beauty of our designs is that they are timeless and have the structure to hold their own for more formal events, but they also have a relaxed elegance that works in any setting. How has your career grown since you’ve started and where would you like it to go in the future? My career has grown in ways I could have only dreamed of when I first started. In the beginning, it was all a learning process – figuring out my aesthetic, understanding the technical aspects of design, and navigating the fashion industry. As I have built my brand, I have gained a better sense of who I am as a designer and what La Plain stands for. The growth has been gradual but incredibly rewarding. Looking ahead, I see La

Plain continuing to evolve and grow, both creatively and internationally. I’d love to expand our presence in key global markets, as well as continue to push boundaries with our designs – experimenting with new materials and techniques. Ultimately, I want to continue fostering a brand that values empowering women, craftsmanship, and quality, while staying true to our core values and never losing sight of what makes La Plain unique. What does your Ramadan look like – are there any rituals or traditions you’re looking forward to? Ramadan is a deeply meaningful time for me, both personally and spiritually, and it’s a time to pause, reflect, and reconnect. During Ramadan, I look forward to the peaceful moments of reflection, especially in

the mornings before the fast begins. There’s a sense of quiet and stillness that allows me to center myself for the day ahead. I also love gathering with family and friends to break our fast together at sunset. There’s something so special about sharing a meal and connecting with loved ones after a day of fasting – it reminds me of the importance of community. Overall, Ramadan is a time for gratitude, reflection, and reconnection – not just with my faith, but also with the people and values that shape my life and work. It’s a reminder to slow down, appreciate what I have, and be present in the moment. This is The Resilience Issue – during challenging times, how do you tap into resilience? During challenging times, resilience is something I’ve had to nurture and rely on throughout my career. As a designer and entrepreneur, there have been moments when things haven’t gone according to plan, but I’ve learned that resilience comes from staying connected to your purpose.

For me, tapping into resilience starts with perspective. When challenges arise, I try to focus on the bigger picture – why I started this journey in the first place and what the ultimate goal is. It’s also about adaptability; being able to pivot and embrace change instead of resisting it has been essential, especially in fashion, where trends and business dynamics shift quickly. I also believe in self-care and giving myself grace. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I take a step back to recharge, whether that’s through spending time in nature or taking a short break to clear my mind.

Resilience isn’t just about powering through – it’s about finding balance, accepting imperfection, and learning from every challenge. I also draw strength from the people around me. My team and my family have been such a vital source of support. Having a community that believes in the brand and in me personally is a huge motivator. During difficult times, it’s the collective strength of the people I work with and the passion we share that helps me keep going.

Abadia,

Shahd

AlShehail,

on navigating the brand through sustainable style and social impact

Who has the biggest influence in your work ethic? My mother, without a doubt. She has always been my biggest role model –her strength, resilience, and dedication has shaped who I am today. Watching her navigate life with grace and determination taught me the value of hard work and staying true to my values. Her unwavering support and her love and curiosity for life are a constant source of inspiration. She showed me that with passion and purpose, anything is possible, and that’s a mindset I carry with me in everything I do, especially with Abadia. Which type of women do you base your designs on and what do you intend for the wearer to feel in your pieces? The Abadia woman is a multidimensional global citizen. She’s someone whose fashion choices reflect her values and lifestyle. She seeks out pieces that are meaningful, cares deeply about the impact of her decisions, and takes pride in her personal and cultural heritage. When she wears Abadia I want her to feel a profound connection – to the artisans’ stories, to our shared heritage, and to her own individuality. I want her to feel empowered, confident, and inspired by the balance of feminine ease and structure in each piece. What has been the reaction so far to your latest collection? The response has been deeply moving. People have connected with the story behind the collection when we first launched it on the runway in Riyadh Fash-

always believed that we have a unique point of view to share with the world. We were able to achieve that vision through thoughtful design and authentic storytelling, which resonated with our customers; women who value individuality and authenticity. With that said, I must admit it’s a lot of hard work, and the key is consistency. For us, it’s about building something meaningful that continues to inspire and empower. Setting up a fashion brand is a business after all. What role does the commercial aspect play for you? The commercial aspect is an important foundation – it allows us to grow, reach more people, and continue telling our stories. However, for me, the heart of the brand has always been the creativity, craftsmanship, and the connection we create with our audience. Balancing the two is key, and I see the commercial success as a way to sustain our vision and give it longevity.

How do you navigate the global market and the increasing pressure of small businesses in fashion as an independent brand? It’s certainly challenging, we’ve had to learn and adjust throughout the past year, but ultimately we are building something that is true to our values and that keeps us grounded. Building strong relationships with our global partners and retailers, such as Harvey Nichols and Net-aPorter has been instrumental in amplifying our voice and connecting with the right audience.

ion Week. It’s been wonderful to see how our signature silhouettes and intricate details resonate with women across the world, who appreciate pieces that are both modern and rooted in culture.

Five years in, the brand has gone global. How does it feel to achieve this? It feels surreal and incredibly humbling. What began as a dream to celebrate and preserve craftsmanship and storytelling from the region has now reached an international audience. Seeing our stories and values appreciated globally is a testament to the universality of authenticity and thoughtful design. It’s a journey I’m profoundly grateful for.

As an ethical brand, how did you cultivate this and how do you ensure this is seamlessly incorporated in the brand’s culture? Ethics are the foundation of Abadia. They’re not just principles; they’re a part of everything we do. We’re intentional in every step – from sourcing responsibly to working with artisans in ways that respect and celebrate their craft. I don’t believe in perfection, but I believe in continuous improvement. We’re always learning, evolving, and exploring new ways to create meaningful connections through our work. My own background in making fashion supply chains more transparent played a huge role in shaping Abadia’s ethos. Abadia is rooted in a refined minimalist aesthetic. Are you naturally driven towards this style? I’ve always been drawn to timeless design – there’s something so powerful about designs that feel effortless yet intentional. For me, minimalism doesn’t mean plain; I love colour and I like focusing on the details, the craftsmanship, and the story behind each piece.

As an emerging regional brand, you are a huge commercial success. To what do you attribute this milestone and how important is this in your brand’s vision as a whole? Our vision from the start has been global; we’ve

What mindfulness tool or ritual do you do to promote a sense of calm during a busy schedule? Mindfulness to me, means being able to appreciate the beauty in the ordinary and to be grounded in the present. With all my responsibilities, I find that having an overall structure for the day helps. One mindfulness ritual that I’ve incorporated into my schedule is a 30 minute nature walk first thing in the morning. It clears my mind and sets a grounded tone to the day. I hope I can keep it up in the summer.

“Ethics are the foundation of Abadia. They’re not just principles; they’re a part of everything we do”

CRAFT OF RESILIENCE

Multi-brand footwear retailer, Level Shoes, welcomes a regional additional to its curated roster of designers. Here, Altaf AlMudhayan and Sharifa AlSuleity, founders of Kuwaiti label THUNA talk about their brand which is built on artisanal integrity, authenticity, and resiliency

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? Sharifa AlSuleity (SA): I’m an early bird, so my mornings start with a sense of purpose. I wake up before the world feels fully awake, make myself a cup of coffee, and take a few moments to reflect. It’s my time to set the tone for the day, mentally run through my schedule, and sometimes jot down ideas that come to mind.

Altaf AlMudhayan (AA): My mornings start with mindfulness. I wake up gently, savor a warm cup of tea, and take a moment to center myself before the day begins. I believe creativity flows best when we give ourselves the space to breathe, so I embrace a slow, intentional start rather than rushing into work.

What was the catalyst that got the brand started? SA: THUNA was born from the belief that footwear should be more than just an accessory – it should be part of a woman’s journey. Altaf and I have always shared a love for beautifully crafted shoes, and we realised there was a space for a brand that blends contemporary aesthetics with artisanal craftsmanship. We wanted to create pieces that feel personal, like a reflection of the wearer’s story.

AA: We were also inspired by the concept of duality – how two women, two perspectives, and two energies can come together to create something greater. That’s what THUNA stands for, beyond just being a ‘pair’ of shoes – it’s about balance, connection, and celebrating every step of the path we choose.

What is the DNA of the brand that defines the THUNA aesthetic? SA: THUNA is all about contemporary elegance. We don’t believe in

overcomplicating things – our aesthetic is effortless, modern, and deeply rooted in craftsmanship. Every detail is intentional, from the materials we choose to the way each pair of shoes is constructed.

AA: There’s also an element of playfulness and imagination. We love the idea of taking everyday moments and elevating them – whether it’s through contrasting colours, unexpected textures, or surreal storytelling elements in our campaigns. We want THUNA to feel timeless yet fresh, something that women can make their own.

What sparks the creative process and how do you go about designing the pieces in your collection? SA: Inspiration comes from everywhere – architecture, nature, art, even a fleeting moment on the street. We start with a feeling, a mood, and then build around that. Sometimes it begins with a silhouette, other times with a texture or detail that excites us.

AA: We’re both very hands-on when it comes to design. We work closely with skilled craftsmen to ensure that every piece embodies our vision. It’s a balance of intuition and technical precision –crafting something that looks beautiful but also feels incredible to wear.

The brand is now part of Level Shoes’ impressive roster of footwear designers. How does it feel to achieve this and how do your values align with Level Shoes?

SA: It’s a milestone that we’re incredibly proud of. Level Shoes represents a global standard for curation and innovation in footwear, so being part of that community is an honour.

AA: What makes it even more special is that Level Shoes values individuality and craftsmanship, just like we do. Their approach to retail is about storytelling and experience, which aligns perfectly with our vision for THUNA.

As a young, independent designer how do you navigate the global market and the increasing pressure in fashion? SA: It’s definitely challenging, but we believe in staying true to our identity.

The fashion industry moves fast, but we don’t feel pressured to chase trends – we focus on creating pieces that feel authentic to us and our customers.

AA: We also remind ourselves that growth takes time. We’re building something meaningful, and that requires patience, resilience, and a willingness to adapt without losing sight of who we are.

To you, what are your favourite pieces from the Ramadan collection available at Level Shoes? SA: I love the pieces that play with textures – there’s a richness in the materials that makes them feel indulgent and celebratory, but still effortless.

AA: Every piece in the collection holds a special place for us, but if I had to choose, I’d say the ones that showcase delicate embellishments. There’s something

magical about footwear that feels festive yet versatile enough to be worn beyond special occasions. What's one piece of advice for designers wanting to start their own line? SA: Build with purpose. The industry is saturated, but there’s always room for something that feels genuine and well-crafted. Take your time to refine your vision and don’t rush the process.

AA: Surround yourself with the right people. Whether it’s a mentor, a business partner, or artisans who share your passion – having the right team makes all the difference.

What is your vision for yourself as a designer and how would you like to develop your brand? SA: We see THU-

NA evolving beyond footwear into a full-fledged lifestyle brand. We want to create a universe where women feel inspired and empowered through everything we design.

AA: And we want to keep storytelling at the heart of it all. The brand will grow, but our commitment to craftsmanship, imagination, and individuality will always stay the same.

This is The Resilience Issue – how do you tap into resilience? SA: Resilience is about believing in your vision even when the path isn’t clear. There will always be setbacks and challenges, but what matters is how you push through them.

AA: For me, resilience is about trusting the process. Creativity isn’t always linear, and neither is building a brand. There are highs and lows, but each step teaches us something valuable. It’s about showing up every day and staying committed to the journey.

“Resilience is about believing in your vision even when the path isn’t clear”

for those who want more than just skincare –they want skin health. It’s designed to work with the skin rather than against it. Every product is designed to work with your skin, not against it, but helping it repair, rebuild, and glowing at the same time. The brand is finally in Dubai, which makes this an exciting moment. Dubai is a place where people invest in quality, and pHformula fits right in by offering a solution that’s results-driven but also respects the skin’s natural resilience. Whether you’re dealing with signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, acne, or chronic redness, our treatments and home care products are designed to restore balance and optimise the skin function. So, your skin doesn’t just look better, it actually feels and performs better.

Which pHformula product do you personally swear by? It’s almost impossible to pick just one product. But as a man in what is often seen as a “woman’s world,” I have to say –hands down, the VITA B3 Cream. It’s like a reset button for your skin - hydration, repair, and glow all in one. Another must-try is the SOS Rescue Oil, a powerhouse for hydration and recovery. Whether your skin is dried out from the Air-condition, irritated from shaving, irritated from sweating or just needs a serious boost after long days in this environment, this is the go-to product. Most men, including me, prefer no-fuss products and, to be honest, the entire pHformula lineup is easy to use, its not greasy, and best of all its fastabsorbing – exactly what you need when living in a fast-paced city like Dubai. That being said, pHformula has so many game-changing products that I always have with me. Once you try them, you’ll understand why.

What are some of the latest launches by pHformula? Dubai’s climate is harsh on the skin – you have constant sun exposure, extreme heat, and air-conditioned environments over-all and it can leave your skin feeling dehydrated, sensitive, and unbalanced. One standout product is the HYDRA Concentrated Corrective Serum – it’s a powerhouse for deep hydration and repair. It delivers a

fresh, energised look and is perfect for men who want a fresh look without the hassle. How does pHformula cater to different skin types and conditions? Rather than putting people into “dry, oily, or complicated skin” boxes, pHformula treats specific concerns like aging, pigmentation, acne, and skin sensitivity. The brand’s resurfacing treatments in clinic and home-care products are designed for a personalized skincare experience. Stronger skin, better results – simple as that. Can you explain the technology behind the PH-DVC delivery complex? Our BATMOBILE, you mean? And yes, I did just quote Batman – because at pHformula, we’ve created something equally innovative. Meet PH-DVC, a groundbreaking delivery complex designed to enhance the bioavailability of active ingredients while minimising the side effects often associated with acid-based treatments. The power of acids in our controlled skin resurfacing treatments isn’t just about their potency – it’s about how effectively they penetrate the skin, their release mechanism, and their ability to trigger optimal regeneration. Think of it like a highperformance supercar. Imagine a Bugatti, a Lamborghini, or even the Batmobile built for speed, precision, and ultimate efficiency. That’s exactly how our PH-DVC delivery system works within pHformula’s skin resurfacing treatments. But this isn’t just any ride. It’s a high-tech transporter, engineered to carry key active ingredients safely and efficiently, ensuring they reach precisely where they need to go – without causing unnecessary irritation or damage. Inside this advanced system, water-soluble acids sit in one section, lipid-soluble ones in another, ensuring a smooth, controlled journey through the skin layers. The PH-DVC system releases them evenly and gradually, preventing the harsh effects often linked to traditional peels.

Protection and Performance: A NextLevel Skincare Revolution. But this isn’t just about transportation, it’s about protection and performance. Like any elite machine, it comes with top-tier enhancements. A natural soothing co-pilot – Boswellia Serrata, reducing irritation and calming the skin. A powerful cell activator – Respiderm, boosting regeneration and skin renewal and barrierboosting technology strengthening the skin’s defenses while enhancing hydration and ingredient absorption. With PH-DVC, we’ve redefined innovation in skin resurfacing – transforming acids into precision-driven, skin-renewing superheroes. The result? Powerful results without irritation or downtime. What are some of the main skincare concerns in the UAE that you’ve noticed? Living in the UAE comes with unique skincare challenges, intense sun exposure, extreme heat, humidity, and air-conditioned environments all

“Resilience is about adapting, learning, and pushing forward.”

I’ve learned it’s important to adapt quickly and stay ahead of the game otherwise you will get left behind. pHformula has a unique approach, but if I had to sum up the most important lesson in just one word it must be education. Skincare is science. The more people understand their skin, the better results they’ll get. It’s not about chasing TikTok trends. It’s about knowing what your skin needs. For me, it’s important to have transparency, innovation, and always putting skin health first are what make a brand successful in the long run. Because at the end of the day, real results speak louder than trends.

take a toll on the skin. Some of the biggest concerns I see include, Hyperpigmentation and melasma which is a major issue due to strong UV exposure, Dehydration – AC inside, desert heat outside – the skin loses moisture fast. Along with redness and sensitivity which are caused due to environmental factors lead to irritation and imbalance. Finally acne and congestion – high humidity increases oil production, causing breakouts. pHformula tackles these concerns headon with targeted treatments and barrierstrengthening formulations, ensuring skin stays protected, balanced, and resilient –even in Dubai’s demanding climate. What has been the biggest lesson you've learned from managing a skincare brand? We are playing in an industry filled with competition, opinions, and ever-changing trends, one thing stands above all: Staying true to your values, being strategic and persistent. New products are introduced every day, so

This is The Resilience Issue – how do you stay resilient? Resilience is about adapting, learning, and pushing forward. Staying resilient is something I think about in terms of balance and adaptability. For me, it’s about staying grounded in the face of challenges while remaining open to growth and change. Instead of seeing mistakes as failures, I look at them as opportunities to learn and grow. This keeps me motivated to push through tough times. A strong supportive network is also important to stay resilient, whether it’s friends, family, or simply being part of a community. Having that support can make all the difference when things feel tough. But, when you love what you do, you find a way to make it work, no matter what challenges come up.

WORDS:

AM TO PM BEAUTY

Entrepreneur Hikmat AlKaitoob shares her morning to evening beauty routine

Talk us through your morning routine. My mornings are about discipline and intention. The first thing I do is pray – it’s my moment of gratitude and grounding before the day even begins. Then, I hydrate with warm lemon water and move straight into skincare because taking care of yourself is the first step to looking and feeling powerful. My routine is simple but effective – cleanser, vitamin C serum, moisturizer, and SPF. Once I’ve taken care of myself, I review my schedule, align my priorities, and step into the day with clarity and confidence. How does your evening routine differ? Evenings are about unwinding and resetting. The energy shifts from ‘getting things done’ to ‘recharging for the next day.’

Skincare at night is about repair, so I use richer prod-

ucts – double cleansing, hydrating serums, retinol, and a night cream. I like to light a candle, disconnect from screens, and reflect on the day – what went well, what I can improve. Before I sleep, I pray again because no matter how chaotic the day was, faith in God keeps me centred.

What are your go-to skincare products? Quality over quantity – I don’t believe in cluttering my routine with unnecessary steps. A strong cleanser, a hydrating serum, and SPF are non-negotiable. I love a good vitamin C serum for brightness and a powerful night cream to keep my skin looking fresh. And of course, a great eye cream – because no matter how busy you are, tired eyes should never be part of your look.

SARAH JOSEPH

Clockwise from top left:

The Night Eau de Parfum Dhs5,700 Frederic Malle; Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque Dhs175 Aesop; The Good C Vitamic C Serum, 30ml Dhs550 Dr. Barbara Sturm; A Goodnight Kiss Parfum 100ml Dhs5,500 ROJA; No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask 100ml Dhs150 Olaplex; Rouge Allure Velvet – Luminous Velvet Lipstick Dhs220 Chanel Beauty

Are you a fan of masks? Absolutely. If I have an event, I’ll use a hydrating mask the night before to get that glow. If my skin is feeling dull, I go for a brightening mask. If I need a deep cleanse, a clay mask does the job. How would you describe your approach to makeup? Effortless and simple, but elevated. I don’t believe in hiding behind makeup – I use it to enhance, not to mask. Good skin is the foundation of any look, so I keep my base fresh and radiant. A little sculpting, a signature lip, and defined eyes – that’s my formula. Makeup should empower you, not overwhelm you. What can always be found in your makeup bag? A perfect rose pink/nude lipgloss and a travel-size fragrance. Which fragrances are your current favourites? I love

fragrances that make a statement – bold, sophisticated, and unforgettable. Right now, I’m drawn to rich, warm scents with notes of oud and amber. I have been currently using The Night by Frederic Malle and A Goodnight Kiss by Roja.

Talk us through your hair routine. Healthy hair is a priority, so I focus on care over rough styling. I usually do twice a week hydrating masks at the hairdresser. When I style it, I go for volume and movement – nothing too forced, just effortless and polished. What is the most unusual item in your makeup bag? A mini magnifying mirror – it helps me closely examine the finer details. A tiny vial of oud oil – it’s my signature touch whenever I need a little extra presence.

BRAVING THE STORM

Ursula Winzel, Founder & CEO of Balcony8 Brand Buro, on stewarding meaningful brands in the region and being resilient during tough times
WORDS:

be showcasing INÁ on J1 Beach with Fundamental Hospitality. We have also developed some incredible prototypes for The Hilton Group that we are extremely proud of. Balcony8 Brand Buro blends craftsmanship with strategic thinking – how does this approach set you apart from traditional agencies? Just as a shoemaker in a remote Italian village approaches his craft with reverence, we approach branding with the same level of artistry and precision. We don’t believe in the mass-produced, cookie-cutter approach – and AI certainly is not a full solution for graphic design and original strategic thinking yet. We start with a blank canvas for every new brand creation. Every brand has a soul, a story, and our role is to excavate that essence and bring it to life in a way that is both compelling and commercially strategic.

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? Mornings are sacred to me. Before my little girls wake up, I carve out a moment to centre myself. I start with prayer and meditation – just a few quiet minutes to anchor my thoughts and listen to what might come up. I then biohack my way into balance with adaptogens and wellness protocols that support my energy and focus. Then, movement. Whether it’s a pre-work padel match, or just a dance party in my kitchen with my girls, I need that dopamine hit to show up fully for the day ahead. What inspired you to launch Balcony8 Brand Buro? During the financial crisis of 2009, I decided to leave behind my career at big agencies and carve my own path. I had the privilege of working at global firms across London, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Abu Dhabi, but I wanted to create something more personal, more human. Branding, at its core, is about connection, and I wanted to build an agency that breathed life into brands by telling stories that resonate. I grew up with an entrepreneurial father, and so naturally the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. What was the vision behind Balcony8 Brand Buro when you started in 2010, and how has it evolved over the years? The vision was always clear: to build a personable, brand-focused agency that creates meaningful, strategic narratives while also stewarding existing brands into stronger, more impactful versions of themselves. Over the years, Balcony8 Brand Buro has evolved into a space where craftsmanship meets strategy and design –where every brand we touch is given the depth and authenticity it deserves. We love working on destination brands and personally my favourite projects lie at the intersect of design and food. We have created over 50 brands for restaurants throughout the EMEA region over the last decade and we will very soon

What does resilience mean to you in the context of your journey? In 2020, my world shattered. My husband was diagnosed with an aggressive Glioblastoma, just as we welcomed our second baby girl. Within six months, I held him in my arms as he took his last breath – the day after our baby turned one. Eight days later, I lost my grandmother. My body physically ached from the weight of grief. And yet, my daughters saved me. They became my rocket boosters, propelling me forward and they taught me, that I can do things that I never dreamt possible in the wake of losing their father. Women have an immense capacity for resilience, but we also need to redefine what strength looks like. It’s not about glorifying burnout or suffering in silence. Strength is in surrender as much as it is in perseverance. How can you inspire women in this day and age to be resilient? Grief teaches us what society often tries to unteach – that feeling deeply is not a weakness, but a profound act of resilience. We glorify strength as the warrior, the unshaken force, the ‘Joan of Arc’ figure who defies the odds. And while that image holds truth, resilience, to me, is about being wildly capable – capable of facing the impossible, yes, but also capable of surrendering to the weight of loss, of honouring pain instead of outrunning it. The only way out is through, and while I suppress at times to show up for my children and my work, I have come to understand that real courage lies in my vulnerability. Strength is not just in the fight; it is in the pause, in allowing yourself to grieve, and in trusting that between the waves of sorrow, there is still life waiting to be lived. What has been the most comforting or helpful thing someone has said or done for you? Grief is profoundly isolating because it makes people uncomfortable. Those closest to you often feel helpless, not knowing what to say or do. The most meaningful moments of support for me have been from friends who didn’t try to fix or minimise my pain. They just sat with me in it. No advice, no platitudes – just presence. Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give someone in grief is the space to be as they are, without expectation. In what ways have you discovered strength within yourself that you didn’t know you had? Grieving is deeply primal, it is the most human experience I have ever had besides birthing children. When I lost the love of my life, I also lost myself, but as

time pulls me further away from my loss, I'm starting to realise that part of my journey of being human, is learning how to let pain be interwoven into the fabric of my life and framing that as strength. Walking my husband to the very edge of his human existence, being his cheerleader and primary caregiver – while nursing a newborn – was both an honour and a gift, but it came at great emotional cost to me. Having said this, I have come to the conclusion that we are born with an innate capacity to triumph over trauma. I genuinely believe that not all trauma is curable, but our healing journey can be a catalyst for profound awakening and a portal to emotional and spiritual transformation. What does resilience mean to you in the context of your journey? Real strength is daring to be soft in a hard world. Since losing my husband, resilience was my default setting. It’s what got me through the pain, the loss, the daily battles I was faced with. I thought that pushing through was my strength, but chronic resilience is mere survival – it is NOT truly living. It's holding your breath, hoping the next blow is not too hard. It's building walls so high that even the good things can’t get through. The real strength is daring to be soft, to stay open, to receive

without putting road blocks in the way. I am trying to create a new narrative for my story by believing that joy, love and ease IS still available to me – not by fighting harder, but by opening my heart. My mother always told me that ‘what is for me, won’t go by me’, and so I trust that what is meant for me, will find its way in. What advice would you give to someone who’s coping with loss? Never forget that you, and only you are the expert on your own grief. When you drown out the judgements and the distortions from your own culture, and even surprisingly from some friends, you can better hear your own innate wisdom. No one knows better than you what it is that you need in the ‘after’. You can’t change what happened, but you can choose what happens next. Grief is not something you get over; it’s something you learn to carry. It's feeling the weakest you have every felt, while morphing into the strongest person you will need to become, so there is no finish line, no checklist for healing. It’s a slow, messy process of integration. Be patient with yourself. Allow yourself to feel it all. The pain, the anger, the love – it’s all part of the same story. Are there any small daily rituals or moments that help you feel grounded? Surviving grief is not about moving on; it’s about learning how to exist alongside it. My rituals give me structure, which in turn gives me freedom. My father always told me that sleep is a non-negotiable tool for well-being, and I live by that. As an only-parent running a full-time business, I compromise on a lot, but as far as possible, not my eight hours. The art of discipline is a saving grace, so I also wake up before my girls to have a moment of stillness – prayer, meditation, and movement. These small acts allow me to show up fully, no matter what the day holds. I also embody a lioness-like instinct, fiercely protective of my circle and unwavering in my choice of energy and frequencies around us. I keep my world tight, guarding my children and myself with intention, and I am unapologetically selective about the people I allow in – friends and colleagues who don’t just stand beside me, but propel us forward. What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? You are going to make it. You don’t know it yet, but you are wildly capable. The life ahead of you will not be easy, but it will be yours to shape. Trust yourself. Trust the process. What is meant for you will find you.

What’s next for Balcony8 Brand Buro? Any exciting projects or expansions on the horizon? We’re in an exciting phase of re-invention. More than ever, brands are seeking authenticity, depth, and meaning, and we’re gearing up to deliver more. Our mission remains unchanged – to build brands with soul, brands that matter. Watch this space.

This is The Resilience Issue – how do you stay resilient? I remind myself daily of this quote by Olivia Ann Rose: ‘In the darkness, the strongest souls don’t search for the light – they become it.’ Oh, and lots of kisses from my two little girls.

Building a business from the ground up requires perseverance. What personal values or experiences have shaped your resilience as an entrepreneur? I constantly remind myself that everything I do is for my daughters’ future, to provide them with a fulfilling life, and to be a positive role model for them. My goal is to teach them the right values and manners, and to empower them to believe they can do whatever they set their minds to in life. The idea of helping them grow into strong, kind, and successful individuals fuels me every day. This purpose keeps me moving forward, especially when challenges arise. Knowing that my hard work not only ensures a bright future for them, but also sets an example that will inspire them, gives me the strength to push through difficult times and keep building something meaningful. How do you cultivate mental toughness when facing high-pressure situations? Mental toughness is built on having a clear sense of purpose, staying flexible, and cultivating a resilient mindset. When faced with highpressure situations, I centre myself on the bigger picture, constantly reminding myself of the vision that drives me and the goals I’m working toward. I embrace challenges as stepping stones for growth, rather than seeing them as roadblocks. Preparation is key – by leveraging data, drawing on my experience, and relying on the strength of my team, I navigate difficult moments with

confidence. Above all, I remain calm under pressure, managing stress effectively, keeping a clear perspective, and trusting my ability to make the right choices. Every challenge becomes an opportunity to move closer to the success I’m striving for. As a leader, how do you inspire resilience in your team? I believe in empathetic and supportive leadership, not driven by fear. When they hit obstacles, I remind them of the amazing achievements they’ve already accomplished and how far they’ve come. It’s easy to get discouraged by temporary setbacks, but by helping them reflect on their past successes, I spark that inner drive, ambition, and hunger to keep moving forward. For me, resilience isn’t just about pushing through challenges it’s about reconnecting with our “why” and keeping the motivation alive to achieve even greater things together. Real estate and proptech are male-dominated industries. Have you faced any challenges as a woman in this space, and how did you navigate them? I haven’t encountered any significant challenges in this space, largely because I was raised with three brothers –Ali, Abbas, and Mehdi – who made sure I always felt supported and empowered, and with a loving father who always believed in me. Growing up in that environment, surrounded by their love and encouragement, helped me build the confidence and resilience I needed to thrive in this male-dominated industries. For me, it’s never been about focusing on barriers. Instead, I’ve always concentrated on adding value, driving results, and leading with a clear, strategic vision. Their support helped me shape a mindset where obstacles don’t hold me back – they motivate me to push forward. Entrepreneurship demands constant energy. How do you balance ambition with personal well-being? I believe in being intentional with my time, ensuring I give my all when it’s needed, and then fully switch gears when it’s time to focus on what matters most. During the week, after I drop my daughter off at school, I’m fully dedicated to my work and businesses. I stay on top of tasks and meetings, always aiming to finish them promptly so nothing slips through the cracks. But when the weekend rolls around, I make a conscious decision to step away from work and immerse myself in family time. I treasure these moments with my daughters because I truly believe in the importance of quality time together. This balance between ambition and well-being helps me stay focused and driven, while also ensuring I’m fully present for the precious moments that I wouldn’t trade for anything. How can women cultivate resilience and confidence when stepping into leadership roles? Resilience and confidence in leadership come from experience, a willingness to adapt, and having a strong mindset. For

women stepping into leadership roles, it’s important to see challenges as opportunities to grow, not obstacles. By continually learning and expanding our knowledge, we can make better decisions and build the confidence needed to lead. Surrounding ourselves with a network of supportive mentors and peers is also invaluable – it gives us guidance and helps us stay grounded. Embracing our unique voices and taking initiative are key to building self-assurance. Setbacks will happen, but they are part of the journey. True leaders see them as lessons, not failures. Confidence builds each time we push through adversity, and when we lead with both strength and empathy, we create an environment where others can thrive too. Taking care of ourselves and finding balance is just as important for long-term resilience. When women invest in their own growth, trust in their abilities, and lift up others along the way, they not only succeed but also pave the way for the next generation of leaders. What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned as an entrepreneur? The biggest les-

“Resilience comes from viewing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow”

son I’ve learned as an entrepreneur is that failure isn’t something to fear, it’s just a natural part of the journey. You can’t expect to achieve anything great without facing setbacks along the way. I’ve failed more times than I can count, but each time, I’ve used those moments to learn, grow, and adjust my approach. Embracing failure has given me the confidence to take bigger risks, push beyond my limits, and ultimately reach new heights of success. It’s all about seeing failure not as a roadblock, but as a stepping stone that brings you closer to where you want to be.

This is The Resilience Issue – how do you stay resilient? For me, staying resilient is all about staying true to my values and the bigger purpose behind what I do. I remind myself that my efforts are not just for my own success, but to set a positive example for future generations, especially my daughters. Resilience comes from viewing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and from having a strong support system that I can lean on. I try to stay focused, flexible, and always committed to improving, no matter what obstacles come my way. Taking care of my mental and physical well-being is also key, so I can show up with clarity and strength, ready to lead through anything life throws at me.

RISING THROUGH RESILIENCE

Turning pain into purpose, entrepreneur Hikmat AlKaitoob discusses how she has overcome the most testing of times, the lessons she’s learned and how she has come through the other side stronger than ever

What does your morning routine look like, the first 30 minutes of your day? My mornings are sacred – they are a time for reflection, discipline, and setting the tone for the day. The first thing I do when I wake up is pray. It grounds me, gives me clarity, and reminds me of my purpose. I then start my day with a glass of warm lemon water, followed by my skincare routine, which is a ritual of self-care, not just vanity. If I have time, I like to move my body – whether it’s a quick workout, stretching, or even a walk to clear my mind. Then, I sit with my schedule, align my priorities, and step into my day with intention.

How have you had to be resilient in life, and what did this teach you? Resilience isn’t something you choose – it’s something life forces you into. Losing my son was the greatest heartbreak I have ever experienced. There is no guidebook on how to survive that kind of pain, but I had a choice: let it break me or let it strengthen me. I chose the latter. I chose to honour his life by continuing to live mine with purpose. It taught me that true strength isn’t about never falling, it’s about getting up every single time and refusing to let life define you by your losses. What tools came out of those challenging times that you can share with others? Faith. Perspective. Discipline. I leaned into my faith more than ever before. It reminded me that nothing happens without a reason, even if we don’t understand it in the moment. Perspective helped me realise that even in the worst moments, there is always something to be grateful for, whether it’s the love I still have in my life, the opportunities ahead of me, or even just the ability to keep going. And, discipline kept me from falling apart. You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond. I made a commitment to myself that no matter how much life tests me, I will always come back stronger, wiser, and more determined. You are a true testament of resilience and grace – how have you managed to come through tough times as an even better version of yourself? I don’t believe in just surviving – I believe in thriving. I don’t let pain define me. Every challenge, every heartbreak, every setback – I used them as stepping stones to build a stronger version of myself. It took faith in God, an unshakable mindset, and a refusal to let life’s difficulties take away my power. I surrounded myself with people who uplift me, focused on the things that truly matter, and kept moving forward – because life doesn’t wait for you to heal, you have to take control and heal on your own terms. How are you approaching life differently now? With more purpose, more gratitude, and absolutely no tolerance for anything that doesn’t align with my values. I don’t take time for granted anymore. I don’t entertain negativity, I don’t hold onto things that drain me, and I don’t hesitate to walk away from anything that doesn’t serve my growth. I’ve also learned to be more present – to truly live in the moment, because tomorrow isn’t promised. What advice would you give to others about resilience and living an optimal life? Resilience isn’t about being unbreakable, it’s about learning how to rebuild yourself every time life tries to knock you down. You have to be your own anchor, your own motivator, and your own source of strength. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, but also learn to be enough for yourself. Take care of your mind, body, and soul. And never, ever let pain make you bitter – let it make you better. What is your next venture? I have some exciting projects coming up, both in business and in personal development. I’m working on expanding my brand partnerships, growing my business, and stepping into more roles that allow me to inspire women.

Women of influence in the UAE share the best advice on being resilient in tough times

COMPILED BY: CAMILLE MACAWILI

Khadija Al Bastaki
“Our extraordinary creative community at d3 is resilience exemplified. [...] I’m always in awe of their passion and can-do attitude, and this is resilience to me”

What advice would you give on cultivating resilience? Resilience is not solely a show of strength but one of agility and creative thinking. Your willingness to adapt to new situations, particularly with a positive, solution-oriented attitude, will ensure that every outcome is in your favour. Make your plans, but gift yourself the freedom of flexibility. This is the outlook I bring to Dubai Design District (d3). Our community and industry evolve so rapidly that we always need to keep evaluating our journey and making necessary adjustments.

Who to you displays great resilience? Our extraordinary creative community at d3 is resilience exemplified. From business leaders propelling Dubai’s creative economy and entrepreneurs driving innovation to professionals and students shaping the future of design, each member of our community demonstrates outstanding fortitude and foresight that are putting our city on the global creative map. I’m always in awe of their passion and can-do attitude, and this is resilience to me. This is The Resilience Issue – how do you tap into resilience during challenging times? In challenging times, I lean on my communities. I find power and resilience in my valued relationships, whether those we’ve nurtured in d3, which are a constant source of inspiration and insight, my female networks that empower and uplift me, or my family, who are a pillar of strength.

“Resilience isn’t about pushing through alone – it’s about finding ways to recharge and move forward with purpose”
Sheikha

Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi

DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE SHARJAH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH (SIFF)

What advice would you give on cultivating resilience? Resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges but embracing them as part of growth. The best advice I can give is to cultivate adaptability – things rarely go as planned, but if you stay open to change, you’ll find new paths forward. Build a strong support network, take care of your well-being, and develop a sense of purpose. In my work with children and youth, I see firsthand

how creativity fosters resilience. Storytelling, whether through film or other forms, allows young people to process experiences, reimagine possibilities, and find their own voices. Who to you displays great resilience? Young filmmakers inspire me daily with their resilience. Many face personal struggles, limited resources, or societal barriers, yet they channel their stories into powerful films. I’ve seen youth use filmmaking to navigate grief, advocate for change, and express joy despite adversity. Their ability to transform challenges into art is a testament to human strength. How do you tap into resilience during challenging times? I remind myself why I do what I do–working with young people and storytelling is deeply meaningful to me. I also lean on community, whether through my team, peers, or the young creatives I support. Taking a step back, engaging in something creative, or simply finding moments of stillness helps me regain perspective. Resilience isn’t about pushing through alone – it’s about finding ways to recharge and move forward with purpose.

Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi

PRESIDENT

What advice would you give on cultivating resilience? Resilience is about endurance, not just enthusiasm. It’s easy to start strong, but the real test is whether you can keep going when things get tough. Challenges aren’t signs of failure; they’re opportunities to grow, adapt, and discover your true strength.

My advice? Own your story. That means accepting the highs and the lows, the successes and the setbacks, without letting any single moment define you. Resilience comes from recognising that challenges are chapters, not the whole book. When you take ownership of your journey, its lessons, struggles, and growth, you build the strength to keep moving forward, no matter what. Who to you displays great resilience? His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed

Al Qasimi is a powerful role model of resilience for me. He faced immense challenges at every step while pursuing his vision, yet his determination never wavered. Sharjah’s global reputation as a cultural center did not emerge overnight. He built it through years of dedication, perseverance, and tireless effort–brick by brick, event by event, one university and institution at a time. Every time I face a challenge, I think about his journey, reminding myself that resilience is about persistence, vision, and the courage to keep moving forward. This is The Resilience Issue – how do you tap into resilience during challenging times? Knowing my purpose helps me stay the course during rough patches. In difficult times, I focus on what I can control: my mindset, my response, and my next step forward. Obstacles aren’t the end of the road. They’re part of the journey. Flexibility is key. Sometimes resilience means standing firm. Other times it means adapting and finding a new way forward. It’s also about connection. Having the right people around you, those who remind you of your strength when you start to doubt yourself.

Sheikha Hind bint Majid Al Qasimi

CHAIRPERSON – SHARJAH BUSINESS WOMEN COUNCIL (SBWC)

What advice would you give on cultivating resilience? Resilience is about embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. The best advice I can give is to remain adaptable and trust in your ability to overcome obstacles. Every setback is a lesson, and persistence is key to moving forward. Surround yourself with a strong support system, and always keep your long-term vision in mind. Who to you displays great resilience? I am deeply inspired by women entrepreneurs who transform challenges into successes. Their ability to innovate, persevere, and lead with confidence is a testament to true resilience. In the UAE, we see remarkable women who balance business, family, and personal aspirations while contributing to the economy. Their unwavering determination is what drives progress.

This is The Resilience Issue – how do you tap into resilience during challenging times? During challenging times, I remind myself of the purpose behind my work. Staying focused on the bigger picture helps me navigate difficulties with clarity and determination. I also believe in continuous learning–seeking knowledge, advice, and new perspectives strengthens resilience. Most importantly, resilience comes from self-belief and the willingness to adapt. Challenges may test us, but they also refine our strength.

Her Highness

Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum bin Rashid AlMaktoum

FOUNDER – TASHKEEL STUDIO AND GERBOU RESTAURANT

What advice would you give on cultivating resilience? Resilience is about trusting the process. It’s understanding that challenges are not roadblocks, but part of the journey. The best advice I can give is to stay adaptable, embrace change, learn from setbacks, and keep moving forward with purpose. Resilience is built in the quiet moments, in the discipline of showing up even when the outcome is uncertain. Creativity, whether in art, design, or food, demands resilience because it thrives on evolution. The key is to remain

Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi

open to growth, to listen, and to refine without losing sight of why you started.

Who to you displays great resilience? I find resilience in the artisans, the makers, the creatives who dedicate themselves to their craft despite uncertainty. Whether it’s a designer working with raw materials, a chef refining a dish, or an artist shaping an idea, resilience is embedded in the process. It’s about persistence, about staying committed even when the path isn’t clear.

How do you tap into resilience during challenging times? Resilience, for me, comes from grounding myself in purpose. In difficult times, I return to the core of what I do, whether it’s through the design work at Tashkeel or the culinary storytelling at Gerbou. Surrounding myself with a community of thinkers, makers, and doers reminds me that resilience isn’t about enduring alone; it’s about building something meaningful together.

ensures I stay strong and am steadfast in my belief that I will emerge from any negative experience not only stronger but with something good to show for it.

Asma Hilal Lootah

FOUNDER – THE HUNDRED WELLNESS CENTRE

What advice would you give on cultivating resilience? Life can often throw curve balls at you, and it is not always easy to be strong and resilient. Personally, however, whenever I face challenges, I remind myself that God is on my side. No matter how difficult life seems to be, I always remind myself that God has got my back and that the challenges I face are because He’s trying to teach me something, if I just listen carefully to hear what Oprah Winfrey calls “the life whisperers”.

My favourite affirmation is from Louise Hay. It is “Everything is working out for my highest good and out of this experience only good will come.” I pray a lot during difficult times, and this coupled with my affirmation

Who to you displays great resilience? The women of the UAE, both past and present. Our mothers and grandmothers lived in very hard conditions before the union and before the economy experienced any sort of boom. They got married at a very young age, raised a lot of children alone without lots of help, and were never encouraged to express how they feel. Few had the chance to go to formal schools and even fewer knew how to read or write. They are the embodiment or resilience in my eyes. Indeed, I salute them and thank them for building great generations of strong men and women.

This is The Resilience Issue – how do you tap into resilience during challenging times? I reframe the way I think about challenging situations but first I allow myself to feel all the feelings I want to feel. Then I remind myself that I am safe and that this shall pass. Life has proven to me time and time again that everything works out – and in many cases even better – than I imagined. So, I remind myself how life unfolded for me thus far and pray and speak my affirmation. I also always ask myself how I can take this tough time and turn it into an opportunity for growth.

THE UNBREAKABLE MIND

How to build and harness mental resilience by world renowned speaker, Rapid Transformational Therapy trainer and bestselling author, Marisa Peer

5,126 failed prototypes in five years. Most people would have given up, but Dyson saw failure as part of the process rather than the end of the road. He relentlessly refined his design, seeing every failure as a lesson, and when no company would back him, he launched his own brand, and the Dyson DC01 became a bestseller, revolutionizing the vacuum industry.

TRY THIS: Next time you’re facing a challenge, ask yourself, “What’s the lesson here? How can I use this?” Instead of saying, “Why is this happening to me,” say, “This is happening for me.” – and watch as that one small shift changes everything.

2. Your Mind is Always Listening – Why the Words You Speak to Yourself Matter

What makes some people crumble under pressure while others rise stronger than ever? Why do some of us instantly panic and feel anxious when life throws a curveball, while others seem to bounce back, more determined and unstoppable? The answer isn’t luck, genetics, or fate – it’s resilience. And the best news? Mental resilience isn’t something you’re born with or without. It’s a skill, a muscle you can strengthen, and a force you can harness to create the life you truly want, free from constant fear and worry.

THE TRUTH ABOUT RESILIENCE

Many people think resilience is about being tough – gritting your teeth, pushing through, and simply “getting on with it.” But real resilience isn’t about ignoring pain, pushing down our emotions, or pretending things don’t matter or bother you. In fact, it’s quite the opposite – because processing your emotions and looking at how you respond and react under pressure and in times of uncertainty directly affects how quickly you recover and adapt in the face of challenges. Think of a palm tree in a storm. It doesn’t resist the wind and snap – it bends, sways, and then stands tall again. Your mind is the same. The more flexible and adaptable it is, the stronger you become.

WHY SOME MINDS ARE MORE RESILIENT THAN OTHERS

The way you talk to yourself shapes how you respond to adversity. Imagine two people facing the same setback – one loses a job and tells themselves, “I’m a failure. No one will hire me. This is the end.” The other says, “This is a setback, but this is also an opportunity for me to find something even better. I have the skills, and I’m confident that I’ll make this work.” Same event, different mindset, completely different outcome. The difference isn’t in the situation but in the belief system – because the words you say to yourself and the pictures you make in your head are the blueprint for your reality. Your mind believes whatever you tell it most often – it doesn’t care whether it’s good or bad, true or false, it just accepts it as fact and works to make it your reality – it’s like a self-fulling prophecy – so choose your words wisely.

THREE PILLARS OF UNSHAKABLE MENTAL RESILIENCE

1. The Power of Reframing: Make Your Mind Work for You Your mind’s number one job is to keep you safe, but sometimes, it confuses discomfort with danger, holding you back unnecessarily. Resilient people don’t let their minds run on autopilot – they take control by reframing situations. Remember, the only thing we really have any control over is our own thoughts!

James Dyson’s story is a masterclass in resilience. Before creating the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner, Dyson tested over

To build resilience, you must challenge that little inner critic that puts you down and holds you back by focusing on the negativesand replace it with an inner cheerleader who tells you that you are capable, worthy, and deserving of whatever you want in life.

Remember, your mind is always listening, and the words you tell yourself become the reality you create. Imagine an athlete training for a competition. If they constantly say, “I’m not good enough, I’ll never win,” their mind and body will follow suit. But when they say, “I am strong. I am capable. I can do this,” they train their mind to believe in them. It really is mind over matter – when the mind believes, the body follows.

TRY THIS: Start your day with affirmations that strengthen your resilience. Look in the mirror and say to yourself with conviction, “I am strong. I can handle anything. I rise above challenges.” – because when you believe in your resilience, you become unstoppable.

3. Taking Action, Even When It’s Hard

Resilient people don’t wait to feel ready – they take action, even when they’re having doubts or feeling worried or scared. They understand that confidence and courage don’t come before action –they come from action.

A client once told me she was terrified of public speaking. She avoided it for years until she had to present at a major event. She told herself, “I can’t do this.” But instead of backing out, she reframed her fear: “I can learn how to do this. Every great speaker was once a beginner.” She practiced, stumbled, and kept going – and now, she confidently speaks at global conferences.

Fear is merely your mind moving you away from something unfamiliar, which it sees as a threat. But the more you do something, the more proof your mind has that you can do it, so it stops resisting and moves towards it!

TRY THIS: Pick one thing that scares you – an opportunity you have been holding back on, a challenge you haven’t yet leaped into – or even a conversation you’ve been avoiding. Take one small step toward it today. When you take action, you regain your power, rewire your mind, and move towards it.

THE SECRET TO LONG-LASTING RESILIENCE

If there’s one thing I want you to take away, it’s this: Resilience is a choice you make every single day. It’s built in small moments –how you speak to yourself, the perspective you choose, the actions you take. You don’t have to wait for life to be perfect before you feel strong. You can start now. Speak to yourself with kindness. Reframe your challenges into opportunities. Take action before you feel ready. When you do, you’ll discover what you’ve always had inside you –an unbreakable, unstoppable mind – and that changes everything.

SHAPING THE FUTURE

Author Noor Sweid talks about her latest book on entrepreneurship in the MENA region

What inspired you write Coming Of Age? While the coming-of-age stories of emerging markets like China, India, and Brazil have been well-documented, I noticed a lack of similar narratives for MENA, despite its impressive economic growth and entrepreneurial evolution. Having invested in the region for over 15 years, I’ve witnessed incredible innovations by regional founders who are leveraging technology to drive both regional and global impact. I believe that there are so many incredible stories of founders across the region, and many of them have yet to be told. In particular, the personal journeys and trials and tribulations are still not shared. Every time I listen to these founders, I am incredibly inspired and moved. So, I felt it would make sense to share these stories with the world as much as possible.

So inasmuch as this is a book about the region for founders in the region, it’s also a book about the region for the rest of the world – to share positive messages about what is really going on entrepreneurially here, rather than outdated perceptions. The book highlights MENA’s transformation over the past 25 years. What do you see as the most significant turning point in this journey? The Originals – the pioneering founders who built MENA’s foundational infrastructure – laid the groundwork for today’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. They navigated resourcescarce environments, operated under complex conditions, and

built businesses in the region at a time where access to capital, talent, and resources was anything but guaranteed. That legacy remains today. MENA’s entrepreneurs today are inherently resilient, building companies that withstand uncertainty and can scale despite challenges. Their predecessors proved that success isn’t just about innovation – it’s about deep market understanding, stakeholder trust, and an unwavering commitment to creating value. The region’s next generation of founders isn’t just inspired by the Originals – they’re carrying their DNA forward, building the future of MENA’s economy on the foundations of resilience and adaptability. The success of these Originals was not just the turning point, it was an inspiration for the next wave of founders who are standing on their shoulders, looking further into the horizon, dreaming bigger and aiming higher than ever before. They carry with them lessons uncovered by their predecessors – and now knowing how to build sustainable businesses despite any resource scarcity.

How do you think technology and entrepreneurship are uniquely shaping the MENA region compared to other regions? Technology and entrepreneurship are shaping MENA in a way that is fundamentally different from other regions – through leapfrogging. Unlike more established markets, MENA lacks deep legacy infrastructure in many industries, and large segments of the

population remain underserved. This has created significant white spaces where digital solutions can scale rapidly. At the same time, technologies such as AI and cloud computing are enabling founders to build and scale faster, at lower costs, and with greater efficiency than ever before. What sets MENA apart is that founders here don’t have to follow a traditional, linear path of development. Instead, they can skip steps –leveraging global learnings to move directly into digital-first models – or even pioneer entirely new ways of solving challenges. This is already happening in financial services, healthcare, education, and now manufacturing and agriculture, where businesses are not just catching up but creating new market standards. By combining marketspecific insights with cutting-edge technology, MENA’s entrepreneurs are building companies that are not just regionally relevant, but globally competitive. This is the future of innovation in the region – fast, adaptive, and built for scale.

How do you see the role of women evolving in MENA’s entrepreneurial landscape? I see the contribution and role of women mirroring the exciting growth in MENA’s overall entrepreneurial journey. Every year will see more women become business leaders as they are inspired by role models – those Originals – who have gone before them. Women will increasingly come into their own, and – in business terms – literally come of age, as the book’s title suggests. I expect both trends to continue, with the tailwind of a more equitable and inclusive funding environment, and the growth in entrepreneurialism generally. It is an exciting future ahead.

What are the biggest challenges entrepreneurs in the MENA region face today? Entrepreneurs in MENA face unique challenges, but they are building with resilience and adaptability. Access to capital remains a challenge, especially in a market where liquidity is limited, making alternative financing strategies like M&A increasingly relevant. Talent acquisition, albeit much better now especially in countries like the UAE and Saudi, is another possible constraint, as founders are often required to be intentional about attracting and retaining the right teams.

Yet, the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is still evolving, with investors playing a more hands-on role in guiding companies through these complexities. While the venture capital landscape is still maturing, founders in the MENA region are proving that innovation can thrive in constraint - turning challenges into opportunities and building businesses that are not just surviving, but also capable of scaling globally.

What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs in the region who want to make an impact? Do what you love: Entrepreneurship is demanding, so it’s essential to enjoy what you do. Just start: The entrepreneurial journey is rarely linear or predictable. Momentum follows action. Solve clear problems: This not only defines your market but provides clarity on your business and product. Avoid being distracted by the solution and focus on the problem you’re solving. Build the right team: Surround yourself with talented, positive people. They will help you reach your goals faster and more effectively.

What’s next for you after Coming of Age? Are there any other projects or books in the pipeline? There is no rest planned! One of the privileges of having had a front row seat to MENA’s entrepreneurial explosion, is you get to wear a lot of hats. Global Ventures keeps me extremely busy. We are currently investing from our third fund and are focused on extraordinary founders with some significant market opportunities. Global Ventures

has always been about investing in emerging-market founders on a mission to change the world, and this will not change. As for another book – we’ll see. Writing ‘Coming of Age’ was a true labour of love, and while I’m happy to take a break from the keyboard for now – never say never. The region has so much exciting growth ahead – I’m sure there will be more stories to tell. This is The Resilience Issue – how do you stay resilient? The stories of the 35 founders in the book are all about resilience. The region’s entrepreneurs have always had to operate in environments where access to capital, talent, and infrastructure is constrained – so, resistence is a necesseity. This has shaped a generation of founders who build businesses that are resilient by design, navigating uncertainty with agility and creativity. Staying resilient requires three key things: First, adaptability – founders who succeed are those who can pivot when needed, whether due to market shifts, regulatory changes, or global economic pressures. Second, resourcefulness – learning to do more with less, leveraging partnerships, and tapping into alternative funding avenues like M&A when traditional capital is scarce. Third, a long-term vision – understanding that resilience isn’t about short-term survival, but about continuously evolving, scaling, and creating lasting value. In a region that moves fast and demands constant innovation, resilience isn’t just about overcoming challenges – it’s about thriving in the face of them.

MENA’s founders are proving that with the right mindset and strategy, they’re not just building companies, they’re building industries that will shape the future of the region.

“In a region that moves fast and demands constant innovation, resilience isn’t just about overcoming challenges –it’s about thriving in the face of them”

Designing Your Downtime

Gaurav Bhushan, Co-CEO of Ennismore, on Delano opening in Dubai and why the design concept leaves you feeling like you’ve had a vacation, without the need to travel

WORDS: SARAH JOSEPH

Tell us through the concept of Delano. When Delano swept onto the scene in the mid-90s, it instantly ignited Miami – and lifestyle hospitality as we know it today – thanks to its avant-garde approach to hospitality and design. The recent opening of Delano Dubai and the upcoming return of Delano Miami Beach mark the next chapter in the brand’s evolution. Today’s Delano embodies and elevates the brand’s unmistakable aesthetic and stylistic signatures that devotees know and love, while ushering in a new era of luxury lifestyle hospitality that feels both referential yet fresh and exciting.

Philippe Starck’s design for the original Delano was iconic. How did you approach the design concept for Dubai while maintaining the brand’s DNA? The interiors of Delano Dubai capture the chic, understated styling of the Miami original. However, in keeping with the

forward-looking spirit of Delano, we wanted to ensure that it was not simply a reproduction nor a time capsule. Starck’s approach to hospitality design at the time was undeniably groundbreaking, and we looked to capture that disruptive spirit to create a hotel that felt entirely relevant and contemporary yet singularly Delano. Brand signatures have been reimagined to imbue them with a bold sense of place and time. The hotel’s discrete, low-slung exterior is marked by a verdant manicured topiary that harks back to South Beach’s infamous hedge, and the classic ‘apple a day’ amenity has been transformed into chic, crafted vessels, located in each guestroom and filled daily with treats.

How does Delano Dubai reflect evolving luxury hospitality trends, such as personalisation, wellness, and immersive experiences? Wellness is one of the key pillars of Delano

Dubai, from thoughtful amenities such as in-room weighted blankets and nightly turn-down Melatonin gummies to promote deeper, more restorative sleep, to our stateof-the-art fitness facilities. We also see that more and more guests are prioritising a sense of community and connection when it comes to fostering well-being, especially when travelling. We work together with wellness architect Adrienne Everett to curate a programme of communal Pilates and yoga sessions, often taking place on the beach or within the hotel gardens to benefit from the hotel’s spectacular natural surroundings. With the growing number of luxury lifestyle hotels in Dubai, how does Delano differentiate itself? Dubai has one of the most enterprising and fast-growing hospitality scenes in the world, with an array of high-luxury experiences that is currently unmatched, and we are

vention. At the heart of Delano is a buzzing cultural and social energy that is wrapped in immersive, sensorial luxury; a bustling cocoon that is equal parts sophisticated and enchanting. There was a charm to the original Delano Miami that is carried forward in the magic of the pool and billowing curtains, and the return of the apple amenity, while upholding standards of taste and style.

also seeing the emergence of a more brandled lifestyle approach in the region. However, there still felt like a huge opportunity to bring a genuinely innovative vision to the city, much like the original location brought to Miami. Delano Dubai seamlessly brings together a stylish understatement with a vibrant social buzz and magnetic energy, creating something entirely unique and relevant for the traveller of today that measures luxury in terms of experiential over materialism. What kind of guest experience are you aiming to create at Delano Dubai? It’s difficult to pin a singular definition to the Delano guest experience as it’s something that defies con-

The boutique hotel concept has transformed significantly since the 1990s. How does Delano continue to be a disruptor in the industry? Delano’s disruptive nature is tied to anticipating the needs and wants of guests, understanding how contemporary cultural and societal shifts affect the way people want to live and travel. While the original Delano inspired countless iterations of all-white guest rooms, living green walls, and lifestyle hospitality itself, that visionary origin and spirit is inimitable and resists duplication. F&B plays a pivotal role at Delano. Tell us about the offerings at Delano? Delano Dubai offers the best of both worlds; at once a serene, discrete resort set on an unspoilt swathe of sugar-soft sands with enviable views over the Arabian Gulf and a dazzling dining and nightlife destination, home to

some of the city’s most exhilarating restaurant and bar concepts. Our signature outlets Blue Door and Rose Bar were at the heart of the original Miami experience, while elevated all-day Italian dining spot Tutto Passa and the Delano Pool and Bar encourage guests to lose track of time amid long languid lunches and golden-hued sundowners. Ennismore’s partnership with RIKAS Group has also seen the arrival of celebrated, established venues La Cantine Beach and Gohan, along with Maison Revka by Paris Society, to the shores of Bluewaters Dubai. Why was Dubai the right next step for Delano’s expansion? We always look for destinations where we can identify a gap in the market and bring something to the table. Dubai is a truly global city, a hub for the international community with an electrifying energy and a world-class restaurant and nightlife scene. We were particularly drawn to Bluewaters Dubai as it offers what we felt to be a perfect setting for Delano; simultaneously exclusive and unstuffy, iconic and dynamic, and with a serene sense of seclusion that pervades from the moment of arrival despite being only a short distance away from Dubai’s hottest attractions.

“Delano Dubai seamlessly brings together a stylish understatement with a vibrant social buzz and magnetic energy”
