IF YOU’RE FEELING A BIT OVER THE SUMMER HEAT…
We get it. We’re at that sweaty peak where we’re all longing for the winter weather to return. But, ever the optimists, we’re focusing on the plus points of a summer spent in the UAE capital. And there are actually plenty of them.
We’re not just talking shorter commutes and instant access to all our favourite restaurants – although they’re welcome perks, too. For families spending summer in Abu Dhabi, there’s plenty to enjoy. Like staycations at the city’s top beach, desert, and city hotels, many of which come with wallet-friendly rates until September, or free stays and dining for kids. Then there’s summer camps galore that look to educate, inspire and unleash the creative streak of the next generation. Plus, many star attractions come with special rates for UAE residents, so whether it’s ticking off a record-breaking rollercoaster or making a splash at a waterpark, this is the month to experience the best of the emirate for less. Our all-star family fun guide is found from p16.
This month, Olympic fever is sweeping around the world, with star athletes from across the globe putting their best foot forward at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. From p24, we’re taking a look at the Olympians proudly going for gold on behalf of the UAE. And we’ll be cheering them on every step of the way.
Enjoy the issue,

Pick n Icks
This month the What’s On team share what’s hot, and what’s a major bummer about the UAE summer
Alice Holtham-Pargin, Group Editor
PICK: Summer rates
Forty-five degrees might be an unacceptable temperature for laying out in the sun for some. But I’m nine years in – I’ve got this. And if you’re also happy to embrace the heat, you’re rewarded with some brilliant discounts on pool days across the emirates. On my summer bucket list? SAL, High Society at The Lana, and Zeta Seventy Seven.
ICK: An empty inbox
My team are inevitably going to call me out for manifesting more emails, but as someone who likes to spin a hundred plates at once, being able to clear my inbox at least twice per day isn’t something I enjoy. Bring back the winter season madness (sorry team What’s On).
Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter
PICK: Cold drinks
I don’t mean a cold soft drink. I also mean a chilled coffee, a cold Pokka Vitaene C, a delicious cocktail, even a bottle of water straight from the fridge. Over the summer, that first sip of a cold drink just hits the spot.
ICK: Sweat
I was born and raised in Dubai, but I haven’t gotten used to the humidity. I break out into a sweat the second I step outside, even if it’s just for five minutes and it takes my body forever to come back to normal. Time to switch to the big handbag because I need to pack in the umbrella, tissues, deodorant and fan.
Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
PICK: Slower living
It is hot. But I enjoy the slower life that summer in Dubai brings. Social calendars are emptier, roads and malls are quieter, and there’s more time to spend with family. That means beach mornings, sunset walks to see the peacocks, or road trips to Fujairah.
ICK: Being indoors
I need a daily dose of fresh air, nature, and the ocean. I’m that friend who wants to sit outside – rain or shine. Dubai doesn’t make that easy, with most things moving indoors and air conditioning becoming a basic (but begrudging) need for survival.
Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor
PICK: No mosquitoes
If you’re one of those people reading this and thinking “there aren’t any mosquitos in the UAE” how does it feel to be the universe’s favourite? Because there are. Mercifully, the hordes seem to retreat into a summer aestivation.
ICK: Sea change
Like many who moved here for the weather, beach life is for me. And while I’m not put off August visits by the heat, anybody that has experienced the bizarre sensation of sweating in the bath temp ocean will understand my decision to temporary sea veto.
Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter
PICK: Defrosting when you step out of any building
There is nothing more satisfying than the feeling as my bones defrost when I step out of a freezing air-conditioned building in the summer. My entire body physically relaxes and I let out a genuine sigh of relief.
ICK: Burning my fingertips on my steering wheel
Yes, I should probably get a sun visor, but I haven’t. So instead, when I get in the car, I burn my fingerprints on my steering wheel one drive home at a time.
Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor
PICK: Family time
If you’re cooped up indoors during summer, that means a chance to spend more time with family, instead of running off in different directions. Just make sure you’re not texting each other while sat in different rooms of the same house.
ICK: Dehydration
During the summer months, it’s important to make sure you’re getting all the water you need and more, and also take your electrolytes/salts to stay fresh, healthy and recharged. Carry water wherever you go, too. Simple things, big impact.
Manaal Fatimah, Junior Online Reporter
PICK: Late-night ice cream runs
You don’t really need an excuse to get yourself a chilled sweet treat, but summer is even more of an appropriate time. Sugar, ice and everything nice for me, please.
ICK: Nest head days
Curly hair and humidity do not get along; hence you might see me walking around with the monstrosity that is my hair for the entirety of the summer months.
Through MY EYES
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Food Sheikh
Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and hidden gems. This month, we chat to Food Sheikh (@foodsheikh), anonymous restaurant critic and creative strategist in F&B planning and development. After living in Dubai for 21 years, he shares some of his top spots that you need on your radar.
Centara Mirage Beach Hotel. If you’ve got kids and need a quick, affordable weekend getaway, this place ticks many boxes. They have a lazy river, which is either super relaxing and chilled out, or as stressful as Hessa Street on a Monday morning, depending on how busy it is. @centaramiragedubai
@itadaku_dubai
Itadaku is a great date spot. The food is as good as it gets, it’s accessible, friendly, and inclusive. I love the attention to detail, and the care that has gone into the whole establishment. It’s the little things – origami cranes in the bill folder, menus valuing local farmers, and genuine welcomes for every guest. It’s kind of what every relationship needs – a focus on the little things.
I honestly don’t have a single favourite, but I’m drawn to home-grown venues that have personalities and a story to tell. Places like Lowe, Bait Maryam, 3Fils, Orfali Bros, Kinoya and Osteria Funkcoolio spring to mind. I love introducing these places to friends, watching as relationships form over shared meals and convivial conversation. These owner-operated venues are the heartbeat of our communities, super important in creating vibrant, liveable neighbourhoods. It’s been really exciting to see talented local restaurateurs emerge, especially in the last few years. Their passion and creativity keep our dining scene fresh and exciting. @lowedxb, @3.fils, @bait.maryam, @orfalibros_bistro, @kinoya.ae, @funkcoolio
Well, not really hidden, although big enough to hide in, my go to is Kinokinuya at Dubai Mall. I will make an early morning weekend dash for a few hours of escapism. It’s my antidote to a week of digital overload. It’s immersive and inspiring. My culinary equivalent is 1004 Gourmet, I love exploring the shelves and putting unknown products into my basket.
@bookskinokuniyauae, @1004gourmet
Probably the response of many, but it’s got to be Pitfire Pizza. Although not for the pizza. A box of garlic knots, extra garlic sauce, and a guaranteed good night’s sleep.

FAIRSERVICE Managing Partner & Group Editor
When What’s On began 45 years ago, my mission was clear: to create a platform that would champion the UAE’s restaurants, events, and community happenings. But in line with the exponential growth across the emirates, the brand has become so much more than that. What’s On is now an essential guide to experiencing the UAE. We’re on-hand to help you navigate those early days when you’re a newbie with our how-to guides. We’ve always got a recommendation for the best ladies’ night, Saturday brunch, or date night spot when you’re in need of a little inspiration. And we’ve got you covered as you move through the milestones in the city, with our top recommendations on where to celebrate your birthday, pop the question, or throw a baby shower. What remains as true now as it was when we first launched in 1979, is that What’s On’s superpower is its ability to remain at the forefront of this dynamic, ambitious, and ever-changing country.
That was put centre stage with our August 2013 issue, where we introduced readers to ‘The New Dubai’. What was new 11 years ago? Paddleboarding, Claw BBQ, Jumeirah Village Triangle, HD Brows, and padel, according to our cover feature.
It’s undeniable that everything in life goes through cycles, but that is especially true of Dubai. In the 46 years I’ve been here, the hottest spots, coolest neighbourhoods and star attractions have gone from evolving year-on-year, to sometimes month-by-month, and we’ve been here reporting on it every step of the way.

The 33rd Summer Olympic Games is here and Team UAE is officially set for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Last month, the National Olympic Committee (NOC) unveiled the full roster of the UAE’s participation, a team comprising 14 athletes competing across five sports: cycling, equestrian, judo, swimming and athletics. Here’s a closer look at the key individuals representing the UAE on this prestigious international stage…
CYCLING
Safia Al Sayegh has already etched her name in UAE sports history as the first female Emirati cyclist to qualify for the Olympics. Riding for UAE Team ADQ, Safia’s journey to the Paris Olympic Games is a testament to her dedication and passion for the sport. Balancing her recent graduation in graphic design from the University of Dubai with a rigorous training regimen, Safia is gearing up for the grueling 158km road race in Paris. Her goal extends beyond mere participation; Safia aims to make a lasting impact, showcasing the UAE’s cycling prowess on a global platform.
As a multiple UAE national road cycling champion, Safia is familiar with the thrill of crossing the finish line after arduous races. Her qualification for Paris follows an impressive 2023 season where she made her mark on the World Tour with Team UAE ADQ, performed admirably at the World Championships, and demonstrated her skill at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. With a strong sense of responsibility to inspire future generations of Emirati athletes, Safia Al Sayegh embodies the spirit of determination and excellence as she prepares to compete in her maiden Olympics.
UAE OLYMPICS BY NUMBERS 11

Abdullah Humaid Al Muhairi, Abdullah Al Marri, Omar Al Marzouqi, Salem Al Suwaidi, and Ali Al Karbi form the core of the UAE’s national equestrian team, set to compete in the show jumping competition. These athletes, selected by the technical staff, represent the pinnacle of UAE equestrian talent. This year will be an especially memorable moment for equestrian rider Omar Al Marzouqi. The talented athlete, who won a silver medal in individual showjumping at the Youth Olympics in 2018 when he was only 15 years old, carried the UAE flag during the opening ceremony, marking a proud moment for the nation as the Games kicked off on the picturesque Seine River.

BRUNCH AND STAY AT ROSEWOOD ABU DHABI
There can’t be a more perfect speedy getaway…
WRosewood Abu Dhabi, Al Maryah Island, Brunch and Stay, starts at Dhs750. Tel: (0)2 813 5550. @rosewoodabudhabi BRUNCH AND STAYCATION // REVIEW
hen summer comes around, we all scramble to leave the country, jet away to cooler destinations where the sun is more forgiving and the temperatures are, well, temperate. A vacation is a luxury and while the majority are preparing their out-of-office messages, Rosewood Abu Dhabi is offering a different kind of escape for those of us who won’t be seeing the inside of Zayed International Airport this summer
Enter: The Rosewood Abu Dhabi Brunch and Stay. Brunch and Stays are not a novelty but they’re not terribly popular either, which is why Rosewood’s take on the concept is still a refreshing variation to the typical one-night stay one might opt for to switch up their weekend.
The package includes a choice of brunch from the renowned Garden Brunch, Yum Cha Brunch, or the ROAST Brunch, an overnight stay and 20 per cent off hotel F&B and 20 per cent off the spa services. All this at Dhs750, with an option to upgrade to the house package from the
soft drinks package for Dhs125. Now that is a solid summer deal.
THE BRUNCH
At Dai Pai Dong, the resident Asian eatery, the standalone brunch starts at Dhs318 for the soft package and is available from 12pm to 4pm on Saturdays. This is a lavish curation and one must sit back and relax as the courses come through.
We start with a dim sum set – three varieties of har gow, fish and abalone siu mai. Each pocket is hot, steamy and filled with ingredients so fresh, you won’t even smell the seafood. Next come the soups – crab meat sweet corn and wild mushroom. While the mushroom is light and flavourful, the crab is rich and creamy, so you take your pick.
The seafood salad is a palate cleanser, which is great as we are served the next starter – deep fried wagyu beef cheek. This is a personal favourite, perfectly sweet, spicy and crispy and packed with deep umami.
Next come the BBQ platter and the Cantonese roasted duck, both of which are great, and like cousins of the beef cheek in terms of flavour profile. We get one choice of mains, and we choose the wok-fried Angus beef striploin. It’s a good beef dish, the meat hearty and chewy but it’s elevated paired with the rice and noodle options –chicken and garlic fried rice, which we love for the bite and the subtlety, and seafood and mushroom e-fu noodles, which were a welcome change of texture and palate.
We end our brunch positively stuffed and happy, with a collection of desserts, of which the raspberry sorbet and the egg custard tart are the winners.
THE STAY
We are given the Executive Room, a spacious yet cosy space with a grand bathroom and a wall of windows typical to urban hotels. Warm and inviting, the setting and the amenities reflect the attention to detail, down to three different types of postcards and a brand new, packed pencil eraser.
After your long brunch, you can head back to your room and relax. Or you can choose to explore Galleria, to which there is a direct connection through the hotel. You can dine at any of the hotel restaurants with a 20 per cent discount and then go on a shopping spree to end the night. We did the shopping bit before and then had dinner at Aqua, where we sampled a simple, heartwarming pizza diavola and gnocchi – perfect for when you’ve had an elaborate meal earlier. A hot bath, a Netflix movie and then it’s lights out.

ANTONIA CHIC, AT THE GALLERIA AL MARYAH ISLAND
Abu Dhabi’s favourite trattoria, redefined
INTRODUCTION
Here at What’s On, we refer to Antonia as Abu Dhabi’s favourite trattoria, and with good reason. The minds behind the brand put just as much thought and heart into building the brand and connecting with Abu Dhabi’s hungry diners, as they do into bringing you famed Italian specials. We’ve waited eagerly for their opening at The Galleria Al Maryah Island, since the glitzy lifestyle destination houses some excellent eats, and this is where you’ll typically descend on for a night out in the city.
LOOK AND FEEL
Antonia Chic snugly resides on Level 2 of The Galleria Al Maryah Island and does a great job of redefining the brand while staying true to its roots. What originated as a sunny seaside trattoria on Mamsha Al Saadiyat with hues that complement
the beach took shape as a community eat in Zeina less than a year ago, and now arrives as a glamorous silhouette. Walk in flanked by nightclub-style barriers and be greeted by glittering interiors, red velvet seats, a bar with wine on tap and staff clad in crisp red-andblack uniforms. Less than a second in, you’ll also spot their signature cutlery flown in from the Amalfi region. On the wall is a framed tribute to founder Simone Federici’s nonna, the inspiration behind it all. This is the Antonia you know, and while it is presented in a brand-new format, bears the insignia your eyes seek.
FOOD
We begin lunch with an antipasto of vitellotonnato(Dhs85), thinly sliced veal and a neatly arranged dollop of caper and
tuna sauce, with muted flavour so the fish doesn’t overpower your dish. We’re then recommended a plate of the mafaldine alpestoestracciatellapasta (Dhs85), a dish of mafalde heavy on the basil pesto. This dish is as much a pesto lover’s treat as it is visually appealing. Fans of meatfree Italian fare, if you thought you were restricted to pasta and tomato sauce, you’ll be glad with this pick. But if meat and potatoes, Italian style, is what you’re here for, order the ossobucoconpatatearrosto (Dhs165). The braised veal dish with semicrispy slices of potato and salmoriglio sauce is perfect for when you’re here to indulge.
A multi-course Italian meal at Antonia would be incomplete without their dreamy dessert picks. If you still have room, get the tortaalformaggio(Dhs45) – if only for the unmistakable aroma of fragrant Amarena cherries. If you seek a reprieve from the summer heat, we recommend the lemon sorbet (Dhs40), refreshing and capable of awakening every last tastebud you possess. Antonia Chic, Level 2, The Galleria Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi, Mon to Thurs noon to 11pm, Fri noon to 11.30pm, Sat and Sun 9am to 11.30pm. Tel: (0)2 674 9781. @antonia.uae
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Tasked with pivoting to The Galleria Al Maryah Islandlevel class, Antonia Chic delivers like a dream.

TAXIING DOWN MEMORY LANE
All hail the taxicab…
Whistle, wave, stand around glancing at your wristwatch – and you’ll soon have one of these pull up to the curb beside you. A medium, a convenience, and what’s evolved into an essential trope of popular culture, this ubiquitous part of our daily lives continues to populate the planet as a seemingly basic, regular form of public transport. Enter this wonder-on-wheels in its various shapes, sizes and hues, that almost irreplaceably continues to make its mark globally despite the rise of tech startups that’ve taken the industry by storm. Here’s a quick look at some of the most iconic versions of the taxi cab from around the world:
New York City: You might’ve seen them time and again in the Big Apple, and if you’ve never been, we’re willing to bet you’ve seen a dozen movies featuring them. One of the most recognizable symbols of the rumbling beast that NYC is, the iconic yellow Crown Vic is a vital cog that gets movers, shakers and history makers from A to B – whether they’re getting
to Wall Street, the Empire State Building or JFK International.
London, UK: The London taxi is next in our line of iconic taxi brands, with these black cabs, or Hackney Carriages comprising a vital part of the city’s bustling streets. A quick glance at the history of these vehicles has us learning that while the black theme was never a requirement, that’s just how they were painted since the end of WWII before becoming a mainstay. With plenty of legroom and a retro charm like none other, we’re big fans.
India: Some people call it an “auto”, and some a “rickshaw”. This three-wheeled machine has a pulse of its own and a dogged determination to beat rush hour traffic. Resident or first-time tourist, hop in one, watch the driver flip the meter on, and if older models still run, watch the driver grab the lever in an iconic move that signals the start of your foray through traffic. In Thailand, they’re called tuk-tuks, and these descendants of the mighty Vespa tend to cruise, in comparison to the little pocket rockets on the streets of India.
Mexico City: We’re all about pop culture, flashy colours and iconic brands, and we get all of these rolled into one with Mexico’s VW Beetle taxi cabs. While these were phased out over a decade ago, they still get an honourable mention and despite being a very snug coupe designed to ferry passengers and their luggage around town, the Beetle is a timeless addition to any list of autos simply due to its aesthetic and cult following around the globe.
Havana, Cuba: Classic cars prowl the streets ferrying city dwellers and tourists around town, and we can confirm this has happened to us, in a pink Cadillac, no less. Keep an eye out for other timeless beauties, including vintage Plymouths, Oldsmobiles and other makes you’d only see in an auto show otherwise. No power steering, no lane assist, just classic engineering and oldschool driving skills that will make parallel-parking in your next-gen wheels seem like a breeze when you’re back.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
AntiiMuse
From college dropout to a Barsha Banksy
Words: Shelby Gee
The antithesis of a muse
Despite carving out a niche as one of Dubai’s most intriguing Instagram personalities – the mysterious masked photographer, AntiiMuse’s expat journey may be more relatable than you think. The anonymous artist moved to Dubai six years ago for a university course, with hopes of becoming an architect. A ‘plan B’ had to be hastily hashed out after one of his university professors told AntiiMuse that this probably wasn’t for him. During the pandemic, AntiiMuse filled his time with watching point-of-view photography clips, where artists would take photos of people randomly in public along with street photography. “For obvious reasons in Dubai that isn’t possible, so I kind of fell into portrait photography. I like taking a moment in time and freezing it.” He then formally dropped out of university and became a full-time photographer. “I don’t create content for an audience, I know a lot of people would, but I do whatever I like, or think is cool and move from there.”
“I don’t know what it feels like to not know what you want to create”
When we talked to him about his inspiration, AntiiMuse – the artist “too lazy to learn Photoshop” – insisted that his creative process is very simple. “There will always be stuff to take pictures of. I don’t draw inspiration from things. I just do what I think would look cool and bring it to life.” While on a shoot at JLT hotspot Soon Dubai, AntiiMuse learned that two of the chefs could breakdance and he knew he had to capture it. “It sounds like I’m being selfish, but I cater to my needs and what I like and I think that’s where the inspiration comes from.”
“It’s important to separate the artist from the art”
Keeping himself and AntiiMuse separate is very important for the artist. His trademark MF Doom mask became part of his disguise through a simple twist of fate. AntiiMuse was asked to do a live recording of a podcast but was “dodging them” because he didn’t
“I LIKE THINGS BEING ORGANIC, I LIKE THAT WHAT YOU GET IS WHAT YOU GET”
want his face shown. To help solve the anonymity dilemma, his brother suggested he buy a replica of the mask worn by the now deceased British-American rapper, and “unless the Doom Empire comes at me, I’ll keep rocking the mask.” But why ‘AntiiMuse?’
The genesis of the name comes from a friend’s response to his ex-girlfriend claims of being a source of inspiration. “Muse?” came the query. “She was more like an anti-muse”. But it was a lyric from one of his favourite artists – ‘pain sips for good art’ – that really breathed meaning into the moniker, “and looking back, if that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have gone in that direction at all.”
“It was chaos but it was so much fun and I’m so proud”
When he was starting out, AntiiMuse did a lot of, what he calls, community service. Photoshoots and work that is for his community and friends to create a portfolio. One of his favourite shoots was Staff is 86 where “we took up the whole space of Papa in the V Hotel and just caused chaos, ate food in the kitchen, popped bottles behind the bar. It was so much fun”
“He saw flashes going off at the event but nobody was holding a camera”
When he’s out capturing shots, AntiiMuse is “heavy on candid”. He recalls an event, where one of the House of Yanos founders was searching the crowd to find the source of a series of flashes despite seeing nobody with a camera. Eventually, after following the trail of illuminated breadcrumbs, he discovered AntiiMuse using the guerrilla photography technique, of quickly lifting a camera for a shot and then moving on to the next target. “I like things being organic, I like that what you get is what you get.”

THE GREAT DEBATE:
SHOULD PHONES BE BANNED AT GIGS?
What’s On is dedicated to getting to the bottom of the debates that matter. This month, we’re talking phones at gigs. Coldplay called for a phone-free sing-along of A Sky Full of Stars at Glastonbury. Hï Ibiza has a no-phones-on-the-dancefloor policy at two of its summer residencies. So is it time to silence screen? Dubai-based DJ Dean Curtis goes B2B with Alice Holtham-Pargin, What’s On’s Group Editor…
THE CASE FOR: Dean Curtis, DJ
Think about a singular moment of the best gig you’ve been to. It’s probably the music building, the lights, the pyro, the CO2 cannons, singing along, smiling, feeling good and experiencing a shared energy that extends beyond you and your friends group. When we are distracted by our phones or capturing the ‘moment’ for
the ‘gram, we usually miss the small stuff. Gigs need to have crowd participation in order for them to be epic. So, if the crowd is distracted, it can lose the overall effect. If phones are banned, everyone can just enjoy the moment.
Just think about it, imagine you’re filming to show your friends what an epic party you’re at and the majority of other people are filming also. Your video will be rubbish. It will be rubbish because instead of showing an epic party, you will be
showing a group of people looking at some flashing lights and loud music through their individual small screen. Are there any exceptions to the rule? Perhaps if Martin Garrix comes up to you and asks for a selfie, then maybe you can get your phone out. But overall put the phone away and enjoy the moment and music.
@djdeancurtis
THE CASE AGAINST:
Alice Holtham-Pargin, Group Editor
I’ve been to my fair share of gigs over the last decade and a half. And there’s a part of me that’s pretty smug that my early clubbing days weren’t documented with 11 Instagram stories, three snaps and a Tiktok. But as I’ve gotten older, and those gigs, DJ sets, and club nights have gotten more distant and less frequent, they’ve all blurred into one compilation of dancefloor-dominating fun. And sometimes I wish I could revisit a specific
moment or time through an out-of-focus video, or dancefloor selfie that really could have benefited from flash (and a filter).
You see, I see those photos and videos as time capsules, reminders of moments that meant something: seeing Alesso for the first time with my high school best friend after we’d spent years dancing around our bedrooms to his music; hitting up Defected in Dubai to remind me of the years I spent at their club nights in Manchester as a student; hearing Perfect by Ed Sheeran live a few months before my husband and I made it our first dance song at our wedding. I’m not saying people should be out here recording entire
90-minute performances, but capturing a video of a moment you’ll look back on for years to come? I don’t see the harm in that.

MILES
Fight Club (1999): Netflix
We are Jack’s broken heart. The danger, when talking about this movie, is giving too much away – a contravention of Fight Club’s first two rules. Edward Norton plays a guy-next-door type, stuck in a dead-end job that he hates, crushed by the crippling banality of an Ikea flat pack existence, whose life is changed beyond recognition when he meets charismatic soap salesman Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt). Norton’s character finds inspiration in Durden’s contempt for authority and lust for chaos, and sets up a ‘Fight Club’ – a bare-knuckle boxing group, that eventually develops loftier goals.
The Ballard of Buster Scruggs (2018): Netflix
First time? A compilation of six loosely connected Western vignettes directed by the inimitable Coen brothers. Dark humour and delicious twists star in tall tales of bank heists gone wrong, prospecting woes, travelling shows and singing gunslingers.
Little Miss Sunshine (2006): Disney+
This directorial debut for Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris can be neatly boxed away as a wholesome family road trip movie. But that paints over a lot of what makes the movie so magical. The Hoover family are driving across the country to take the youngest member of the clan, Olive to the “Little Miss Sunshine” beauty pageant. The real sunshine, however, comes from the growth of each of the cast members along the way, the resolving relationships and the Kanye-tier audacity of Grandpa Hoover.
Gladiator (2000): Netflix
4
Interstellar (2014): OSN
5
This epic sci-fi caper set in an apocalyptic near-future is built on the creative nebula of two Nolan brothers, with both Jonathon and Christopher (who also directed) on the writing credits. Earth is dying, and Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is appointed as pilot of Endurance, a manned space mission that becomes humanity’s last desperate hope for survival. Their objective – to traverse a wormhole and find a habitable host planet for earth 2.0. Cosmic peril ensues and the team are forced to make some difficult decisions with Cooper finding out just how deep a black hole goes.

13 Going on 30 (2004): Netflix
6
I’m such a sucker for a solid rom-com, and 13 Going on 30 is just that, but not at the same time. It’s a typical romantic comedy, with all the ingredients of a young, beautiful, successful heroine, the boy next door and a series of events that will bring them together and you to rosy tears. And what’s more romantic than literally the entire universe conspiring to bring star crossed lovers together?
Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo are absolute sweethearts in this fresh but still comforting take on love, and being given a second chance to make things right.
Lootera (2013): Rent on Apple TV
He’s General Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, a loyal servant to the true emperor of Rome, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. The story of a man, stripped of all he holds dear, rising up as a gladiator through the brutality of the ancient Roman Colosseum, to challenge an evil despot and claim his vengeance, in this life, or the next. 9
Oppenheimer (2023): OSN
Forrest Gump (1994): Netflix
This one is a classic of movies and one that will tug at your heartstrings with the echoes of run Forrest, run! Through the years, the Robert Zemeckis directorial has become an absolute cult favourite and a cornerstone of thoughtful cinema rooted in realism, with a delightful hint of running away with the wind of imagination. The simplicity of Forrest’s internal universe, held together by a fierce passion of love, compels you to fall for him and cheer him on as he proves anyone who ever doubted him wrong. Tom Hanks in his career best –doesn’t get better than that.
7
If you’re one of the small minority of people who haven’t seen this megablockbuster yet, now is your chance. Oppenheimer was the biggest release of 2023, and earned main man Cillian Murphy a well-deserved Oscar for his performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. While the world was finally awoken to the genius of this man after six seasons of Tommy Shelby and his dirty, delicious charisma, the movie itself is an epic. From the cast to the visuals and the sound effects to the performances, Nolan has done it again. Order some Chinese food and settle in for the ride.
One of my favourite Bollywood movies of all time, Lootera is one picture everyone needs to see. Based on O Henry’s beautiful short story The Last Leaf , the plot follows Pakhi, a bright-eyed Bengali girl and the daughter of an aristocrat, and Varun, a mysterious, charming archaeologist. They meet, not by chance, and unexpectedly fall in love, but Varun harbours secrets that threaten to destroy their lives. Never have I seen the aching pain of longing captured with such tenderness in a film, mixed with the hatred of betrayal and the guilt of love despite, amidst the stunning, vintage landscape of a newly-independent, 1950s India. It will break you heart and it’ll be worth it.
Forgotten (2017): Netflix
South Korean movies, particularly of the thriller variety, are severely underrated, as you will learn from this flick. Jin-seok and his family move to a new home after which his brother is abducted and subsequently returned, but he comes back somewhat different. Jin-seok is irked with this change and his quest for answers reveals some shocking truths about his life he knew nothing about. This one is a mind-bender and will leave you utterly shocked at the twists and turns coming your way. Nothing is what it seems and the truth is hidden between too many lies.

THE BEST BARBERSHOPS IN ABU DHABI
Shear indulgence awaits here…
Aubiquitous symbol of self-care, ritual, personalised service, and in many parts of the world, even one of the central locations of a community, barbershops have stood tall as a preferred meeting point for gents around the world, as they walk in with one aim – to walk out feeling like a new man. Here are our picks of the best barbershops in the UAE capital, whether it’s a good ol’ haircut you’re after, a hot shave, or newer treatments on their list of services.
Urban Male Lounge
This men’s grooming salon has six locations in the UAE, with two in Abu Dhabi alone, at the World Trade Centre Mall and at The Galleria Al Maryah Island. The award-winning brand prides itself on chic design, tailored individual services, and high-tech facilities including plasma screens (pre-loaded with OTT content) so you can keep your eyes on entertainment while the barbers keep theirs on your hair. Cuts are available from Dhs116, shaves from Dhs69 (hot lather), massages, including a relaxing lunch-time pick-me-up from Dhs75, manicures from Dhs110 and hot stone therapy from Dhs208. Urban Cuts
Well, they pretty much sum it up on their website - Urban Cuts specialises in giving you the complete “man-pering” experience. It would seem like you can’t drive too far in the capital without running into one of their locations, since they’re located in World Trade Centre if you’re in the city, at Water’s Edge on Yas, in Al Hadeel, Etihad Towers and also in Al Reef. A gentlemen’s cut will run you about Dhs95, and their focus also lies on community, as their strategic placement would indicate. Children will also love this spot, offering puzzles, toys and books to make the waiting easier, and way more fun in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Urban Cuts, various locations, Abu Dhabi. @urbancuts_ae
Chaps and Co
Coming up on 10 years in business in the big ’25, this classy barbershop in the Abu Dhabi EDITION is known as much for its memorable branding, haircare services and treatments, as it is for its roster of skilled stylemasters. With five in neighbouring Dubai and two new international locations in Riyadh and on New York’s Broadway Avenue, the interior of Chaps & Co. in Abu Dhabi features an artistic spread of cut-throat razors on its walls, mood lighting, feature paneling and luxurious retro chaits. For those looking for more traditional services, a classic haircut comes at Dhs135 and a traditional hot showel shave at Dhs110, alongside several cuts that will give you the fade you seek, among other looks. They also offer hair colour, keratin treatments, and specialised treatments such as an oxygenated bubbles mask (Dhs95) designed to rejuvenate your skin and leave you looking and feeling like a million bucks. 1847 Executive Grooming for Men
1847 arrived in Abu Dhabi after having established a 10-store strong presence in neighbouring Dubai. The brand’s sophisticated network of salons, with exclusive retail rights on some international products (1847 is the only UAE stockist of The Grey, for example). The gentleman’s club-style interiors are refined and the comfort of guests is clearly a priority. For one, cuts come with access to a personal TV screen equipped with Apple TV. There’s even a private room for that UAE MVP VVIP experience. Get an executive hair trim here from Dhs70, a beard and moustache trim from Dhs75, massages from only Dhs70, and facials. If you’re hunting for sweet deals, you’re also eligible for Dhs50 off your first service. 1847, Saadiyat Beach Club, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, daily 9am to 9pm. Tel: (0)2 656 3530. 1847formen.com
Local is one of those barbershops that really give you a community feel. While some of you might remember them from their tie up with What’s On Abu Dhabi’s Homegrown Restaurant of the Year, Marmellata at this year’s BRED festival, they’ve been around way longer. With fresh fades, fresh kicks and freshly ground coffee, the super-trendy chop shop wears its street style all over the walls – with skate paraphernalia, limited-edition urban fashion pieces and arty little knick-knacks making appearances throughout. Located in one of the capital’s most-loved suburban neighbourhoods, Local’s services begin with a full haircut (described as a 45-minute session) priced at Dhs180, but if a basic back and sides is all you seek, you’ll be fixed up at Dhs135. Kids cuts are priced at Dhs120, and true to its brand, they also offer to do a full deep clean on your prized sneakers while you get your hair sorted, with it avalable at Dhs285. The skilled barber team includes Connor, Alex, Chrissy and Fazz, but as true masters of their art, their peak slots get booked up weeks in advance.
LOCAL, Al Zeina Complex, Block C, Abu Dhabi, Sun to Thur 11am to 9pm (closed Mon), Fri to Sat 8am to 10pm. Tel: (0)2 555 3339. localco.ae
IThe
first rule of Fight Night is…
UFC is back in the capital this summer
In conversation with Cory Sandhagen
What’s On: What do you love most about competing in Abu Dhabi?
Cory Sandhagen: I love the level of hospitality, the hotels. The crowds are great, they’re sporting and love their fighting. It’s cool that Abu Dhabi and the surrounding region are becoming a part of the UFC.
WO: Do you have any favourite emerging markets for the sport?
n the first of two highly-anticipated UFC events happening in the UAE capital this year, UFC is making fight fans’ wishes come true with the addition of an electrifying event that will be taking place at the Etihad Arena as early as August 3.
What is usually viewed as a slow time of the year in this town is about to take an interesting turn, with serveral thrilling showdowns making up a searing fight card in Abu Dhabi. The second event in the UAE capital in under a year since the likes of Islam Mackhachev and Khamzat Chimaev entered the octagon here last October, will see second-ranked Bantamweight Cory “Sandman” Sandhagen take on unbeaten Dagestani Umar Nurmagomedov, on Yas. The Sandman, recovering after surgery on a torn tricep, will be raring to go against Umar, who is expected to be the quite the crowd favourite at the Etihad Arena.
The Fight Card also has some interesting additions that are bound to up the entertainment value in Abu Dhabi come August 3. For one, 40-year old Nick Diaz will return to the octagon against Brazilian Vicente Luque, as the veteran aims to bring years of experience to the
mat. Another veteran, Tony Ferguson will take on fellow American Michael Chiesa in the welterweights, while women’s strawweight action will see MexicanCanadian Loopy Godinez go head-to-head against Mackenzie Dern.
Abu Dhabi’s first Fight Night takes flight this summer as the latest in a series of exciting, crowd-favourite events put on by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), since signing a formal partnership with UFC back in 2019.
We’re ready, we’re excited, and we can’t wait to see it all go down at the Etihad Arena. Get your tickets now and we’ll see you there.
UFC Fight Night, Etihad Arena, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, August 3, from Dhs295. etihadarena.ae
CS: I think it would be awesome to expand into Japan, India, and Africa too. The UFC is doing a great job of bringing people together through the business, and I’m sure they’re going to keep going.
WO: How are you feeling in terms of preparation and energy levels, especially returning after injury?
CS: My elbow feels good. Fight camps are fun in their own unique way, but with five weeks to go I’m in the thick of it all, and while I’m tired all the time, that’s kind of what it takes to get there.
WO: Having fought in the Bantamweight and Featherweight divisions, would you ever consider competing as a Lightweight?
CS: Lightweights are much bigger than I am. In maybe a couple of years I’ll do Featherweight, but lightweights walk around about 30 pounds heavier than I am, so I think it’s best they do their thing, and I do mine.
WO: Are there any other matchups that you’re looking forward to on the Fight Night card?
CS: There’s definitely some very good fights. I think it’s intriguing Nick Diaz is fighting again, kind of a curveball but that’s pretty cool. Also, everybody loves Tony Ferguson, so hopefully he can get one in the win column.

Skin Laundry
Stunning skin has a new address...
The skincare fiends of Dubai most definitely know about Skin Laundry, an American-born brand of skin science and technology that is one of the best in the game. Skin Laundry in Dubai has been the resident choice of skin clinic for many years, and now, dwellers of the capital can also avail their state-of-theart services at the new Skin Laundry Abu Dhabi.
THE SPACE
Located on Al Qana waterfront, the clinic has a prime, peaceful location, somewhere you would go to switch off and get pampered. Keeping up with the theme, the space itself is clean, bright, minimalist
WELLBEING // TRIED AND
but my aesthetician walked me through all the steps and explained each bit carefully. The laser pen was painful, but not unbearable. More like tiny needle pricks than anything. That lasted for about 10 minutes, with about five rounds and then we went on the HydraFacial.
The HydraFacial has five steps; lymphatic drainage, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and calming LED blue and red light therapy. Every step makes use of high-end tools, including the extraction, which I liked very much. Manual extractors are almost always tearinducing, but the machine made it mush easier and pain free. Generally, there is no or minimal pain, so if you’re looking for something easy and laidback with great results, this is the one for you.
THE AFTER
and airy, filled with white, wood and sunny corners. It sets the tone of your visit right away; you’re here to recharge, revitalise and transform your skin. That is the promise. I arrived for my appointment on a hot morning, and instantly felt relaxed as soon as I stepped inside. Of course, the air conditioning is a little bit of that, but the interiors are light and easy on the eyes and that makes all the difference.
THE FACE
I was booked in for the Ultimate Glow Facial, which consists of their signature YAG Laser and a HydraFacial to follow, priced at Dhs1,450. Before we began the treatment, I had a quick consultation with the dermatologist, who advised a course of action post my facial today. This is an exclusive service at the Abu Dhabi outpost called Skin Laundry+ in addition to lasers and facials, two aesthetic dermatologists offer a variety of treatments such as HIFU, RF microneedling, skin boosters, botox, and fillers, essentially more invasive aesthetic treatments. Then we took some vitals and we were off to the facial room.
The whole process is quite relaxing. You can lie down and fall asleep, if you want,
Essentially, no downtime is expected after the facial and you just have to take the usual precautions. Don’t wash your face for three hours, stay out of direct sunlight and wear sun protection (very important). Results are almost instant and you’re left with a healthy glow that develops over time. Overall, my experience was very pleasant, very welcoming and I’d definitely go back. The staff is wonderful and courteous, and quick to answer any questions you might have about the processes, and of course, the services themselves are properly scientific and based on the anatomy of skin.

A MYKONIAN Odyssey
48 hours in a Grecian paradise
Look closely and you’ll find pomegranates sprouting all over the island of Mykonos. Frozen in art and hanging from the canopies of shade-giving trees, the seeded fruit is a powerful totem for one of the saddest stories in the assembled works of Greek Mythology. Persephone, daughter of Demeter and Zeus, is abducted by Hades and tricked into eating seeds from the sacred fruit. This act weds Persephone to an existence where half the year is spent above ground with her mother and the other half in the underworld with her wicked uncle Hades. It’s not just a tragic tale, it’s an allegory for the seasons – the prosperity and bounty of the summer, followed by the dwindling light and barren bite of winter.
Mykonos is locked in step with that cycle. In the off-season, the tourism trap seizes shut, the old town rolls down its shutters and the fruiting trees tumble into slumber. But right now, the Agean is in full bloom, the summer sun has thawed the sleeping titan, and the golden charms of Mykonos are once again splashed across the collective Instagram stories of the beach glam jet set. “Does this mean I’m one of them now?” I wonder as I teeter on the rocky edge of legendary twilight spot, 180º Sunset Bar, taking extra care in framing the last shards of Cyclidian sunlight on my phone.
I arrived in Mykonos this afternoon on a direct flydubai service – a little over four hours separate this Greek epic from our UAE shores, and it’s a travel tie that strengthens with each passing year. The appeal is easily translated. Mykonos’ famous breeze kneads out the
knots of a Gulf summer; the peace of island life is a sweet salve for the pace of city stresses; and the white-walled, hill-built homesteads have a lighter gravity than the sky-scraping towers of home. And for a land that has spent most of its time in human tenure as synonymous with penury, it does luxury extraordinarily well. The glamorous side of Mykonos is well documented, a case book filled with many names familiar to Middle Eastern travellers. There’s a Zuma, a Nammos, a Beefbar on the Coast and a Nikki Beach on neighbouring Santorini.
Part of the reason I’ve made the journey here, is to explore how well the latest addition to this collection of ‘Big in the UAE’ is bedding into Mykonian life. The latest outpost of LPM, now preferring its go by its full name – La Petite Maison, can be found close to the Old Town (though in truth, everything is close, the entire island is packed into an area of 33 square miles). It’s found inside another new face on the scene, the Anandes Hotel which rather conveniently, is where I’m staying for the duration of my trip. Tomatinis on my doorstep, dreams do come true.
ANANDES HOTEL
Sight-seeing
Mykonos in its current, fabulous, era – is probably best known for being a party destination. But there’s plenty to see if you’ve got a hankering for something with substance. I took a guided walking tour through the winding streets of the old town – centuries-old churches, bustling squares and emblematic windmills each hold their own spell-binding stories. Head to the port to take a Mykonos Catamaran cruise through the island’s secluded bays and secret caves where you can drop anchor for a secluded sea swim. And if you fancy a spot of island hopping, the honeymoon idyll of Santorini is just a two-hour ferry ride away.
Coming from Dubai, a land of seven-star hotels and expansive decadence, it’s refreshing to experience a more tangible, quieter sort of luxury. That’s what you get at Anandes, a stunning new boutique hotel – with bleached bones and sophisticated minimalism at its ice-cool core. It has a small gym, and shares a stunning sea view pool with LPM (who also curated the breakfast menu), but it’s the location that really adds a touch of true Mykonoan magic. High up on a hill, it looks over the sprawling white walls below and out towards the foaming broil of the Agean, a prime spot to absorb those billionaire sunsets the island is famous for. The rooms are sleek and dressed in cave-core chic, and it’s just a short toddle until you’re in town. However, if you have anything less than piston engine calves, you might want to consider a taxi ride back up that incline. Rooms from Dhs3,750. @anandeshotelmykonos
LA PETITE MAISON RESTAURANT AND BAR
The newest member of the LPM diaspora shares some strong family resemblances with its clan members. The artwork, music, menu, the passion worn proudly on its sleeves, is all authentically on brand. But it’s the new directions in which it steps that are some of the more exciting elements of LPM Mykonos. The most immediately evident change is that this restaurant is almost entirely open to the elements. In the middle of the venue, the pool – with its semiimmersed day beds – sets up the possibility of dip with steak frites or escargots près de l’eau. There’s a dedicated menu for day guests that includes LPM’s traditional Riviera flair alongside new Greek-inspired sagas. But you must stay for the evening and watch the heavens cook. All your old friends are there – the Dover sole, côtelettes d’agneau, warm prawns, a conveyor belt of tomatinis and this year’s infinitely crisp bespoke rosé collaboration with Figuière. This feels like LPM, the Director’s Cut. @lpmmykonos
GETTING THERE: flydubai flies
Lisbon SIGHTS, SMELLS, AND STEPS OF
A beautiful, hilly and historic city, Portugal’s capital is ripe for exploration… just be prepared to walk
Words: Laura Coughlin
In the past decade, Lisbon’s iconic cobbled streets have witnessed a remarkable transformation. The Portuguese capital, known for its challenging yet rewarding terrain, has seen its centuries-old castles and traditional tabernas embraced by contemporary museums, vibrant concept stores, and bustling food halls. This blend of the old and new creates a captivating mosaic of experiences, making Lisbon one of today’s most sought-after travel destinations. With 30 million tourists braving its infamous hills each year, the city promises throbbing hamstrings but unforgettable adventures. Here are eight unmissable experiences in Lisbon.
SARDINES
With its prime Atlantic location, seafood is a must-try in Portugal, and nothing embodies the local flavour quite like sardines. In the summer, the city turns into a massive barbecue as sardines are grilled on the streets. These small fish have a strong aroma, making them impractical for indoor cooking, but perfect for alfresco feasts during balmy Mediterranean summers. Beyond the grill, you’ll find sardines canned in oils, alongside other seafood like octopus and salmon, available everywhere from grocery stores to top restaurants.
CASTELO DE SÃO JORGE
Perched high above Lisbon, the imposing Castelo de São Jorge is impossible to miss, offering a commanding view over the city and the River Tagus. Originally constructed by the Romans in 200BC, this historic fortress underwent significant renovation in the 1940s and has since become one of Lisbon’s most popular tourist attractions. Given its popularity, expect crowds; visiting in the morning or late afternoon, and purchasing tickets online to skip the queue, is highly recommended. Despite the bustle, standing atop the castle and soaking in the panoramic views of Lisbon’s terracotta rooftops is an unforgettable experience. For first-time visitors, this iconic monument is a must-see. castelodesaojorge.pt
TRAM 28
If you need to give your feet a rest for a day, Lisbon’s iconic Tram 28 is a must-do for any visitor, trundling along a 4.3-mile route from Campo de Ourique to Praça Martim Moniz. This classic wood-panelled tram twists through tight turns and climbs steep inclines, passing some of the city’s most charming attractions. Commissioned in the 1930s, the Remodelado trams were specifically designed to conquer Lisbon’s hilly terrain. Beware, though: they can get painfully crowded, especially during peak season. To enjoy unobstructed views of picturesque hilltop neighbourhoods like Graça and Alfama, catch an early ride – trams start as early as 5.40am on weekdays and 6.45am on Sundays.
JUST WALK!
No visit to Lisbon is complete without a stroll through the historic suburbs of Alfama and Mouraria, which cascade down the hillside below the castle. Wander along winding lanes flanked by beautifully tiled palaces and discover shady squares lined with fragrant orange trees and bars where sardines grill over open coals. Forget about navigating a specific route; aim to get lost and you’re sure to find a picturesque corner with striking city views. Just make sure to pack your trainers.
TIME OUT MARKET
Dining in Lisbon is one of the city’s greatest pleasures, but a fantastic starting point for any visitor is Time Out Market – the now iconic food hall, which features some of the most popular restaurants and bars in the city. There you’ll find locally sourced seafood, addictive cheese-filled pasteis de nata pastries, burgers, pizzas, sushi, pad Thai, and traditional Portuguese plates, all served up within a bustling 18th century building. timeoutmarket.com/lisboa
LX FACTORY
For a taste of contemporary Lisbon, head to the trendy district of Alcântara and explore LX Factory. Once an industrial complex of 19th-century factories, this vibrant hub was transformed in 2008 into a bustling enclave of cool boutiques, restaurants, bars, and office spaces. Dive into fair-trade fashion at Etnik Spring, admire the eclectic art – from large-scale watercolours to quirky drawings – at O Gabinete Da Madame Thao, or browse for upcycled home decor at Saudade Design. LX Factory offers a dynamic mix of creativity and modern flair that’s perfect for any urban explorer. lxfactory.com
MAAT
Step into the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) for a celebration of all media forms. This August, MAAT hosts an extensive exhibition by Nicolas Floc’h, a renowned French photographer known for his work on the sea. The exhibition, The Colour of Water – The Tagus River, features a large mural composed of 408 photographs that capture the river’s mesmerising colour scale and dramatic seabed images affected by the archipelago’s sulphurous waters. What makes this museum truly special is its stunning architecture and prime location. Housed in a curvy, ceramic-tiled building designed by British architect Amanda Levete, MAAT sits along a sloping riverside terrace that’s perfect for people-watching. Once you’ve had your art fill, hire a scooter and zip along the river and under the bridge for a breezy journey back towards the city centre. maat.pt
FADO
You can’t visit Lisbon without getting serenaded at a fado bar. Translating to ‘destiny’ or ‘fate,’ fado music is believed to have originated in the port districts of Alfama, Mouraria, and Bairro Alto in the early 19th century. Today, you can climb the winding Lisbon hilltops to find numerous fado bars where you can knock back shots of Ginjinha, a sour cherry liqueur, and listen to the melancholic melodies and rich storytelling lyrics of fado. For a truly intimate setting, visit Tasca do Chico in Bairro Alto, where fado nights occur a few times a week, and patrons are even invited to sing along. @tascadochico_

Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort
A seaside stay that injects French flair into family fun
LOCATION
In the quiet Al Hamra Village, Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort is reachable from the centre of Dubai in under 90 minutes. It’s set on the Ras Al Khaimah beachfront in good company: as you face the sea, the palatial Waldorf Astoria sits pretty on the left, while the exclusive, all-villa retreat of The Ritz-Carlton lies to the right.
LOOK AND FEEL
From the outside, the hotel looks like a quaint village within a village. Guest rooms are set within sand-hued villas that dot the neatly landscaped gardens and lead down to the silvery-white beach, and guests get around in buggies that shuttle them from the lobby, to the beach, to the villas. The interiors have been given a modern, Sofitel touch, with lots of natural light, verdant plants, and textural carpets, marbles, and soft furnishings.
ROOMS
Rooms and suites mirror the same Arabian-meets-Parisian aesthetic that’s found in much of the hotel’s communal spaces. The guest rooms and suites set in the villas are the grander options, and all come with views of the internal gardens or
face the beach. Ideal for families and big group stays are the two-bedroom suites, which combine the ground floor of the villas and mean you have a pair of king rooms, and in some cases, your own private pool to bliss out and enjoy. The guest rooms are warm and comfortable, with Diptyque amenities and colourful artworks.
FOOD AND DRINK
The culinary action largely revolves around East, an all-day dining restaurant in hues of smart emerald, that fuses Sofitel’s French roots with a menu of largely Levantine dishes. Grilled Atlantic prawns in a simple garlic are a flavourful seafood option, while meat eaters can look forward to options like the tender lamb chops. For breakfast, head here for all your continental classics, where plates of pastries sit alongside extensive cold cuts and fresh fruits, but you can also request made-to-order eggs like omelets and Benedicts. Guests shouldn’t miss a drink at Veritas, a speakeasy-style drinking den hidden behind a bookshelf, decked out in jewel tones and presents an impressive
list of signature Negronis. The boho-inspired pool bar, Samphire, is a great spot to enjoy the sunset, with a cool refreshing beverage in hand. A pair of signature restaurants will also open soon: Reunion, an elegant French brasserie; and Waka, bringing vibrant Polynesian flavours to the beachfront.
FACILITIES
The lagoon-like swimming pool – Ras Al Khaimah’s largest – is the perfect place to take a dip. Complete with a swim-up bar, in-water loungers, and a waterfall, it’s an inviting space to cool off between stints under the blue and white striped parasols. There’s also a kids pool with splash pad, and a serene spa pool where you’ll also find a bubbling jacuzzi. Speaking of the spa, it’s a tranquil space where Clarins treatments including relaxing or energising massages are performed in breezy treatment rooms. The nearby Al Hamra Golf Club, less than five minutes’ walk away, is an invitation to hit the greens and work on your swing.
RATES
A one-night stay in a classic room with garden view starts from Dhs539.
VERDICT
This family-centric hotel is an affordable and well done spot for your next beach break.
