LIKE MOST PEOPLE, I FIND CHANGE DAUNTING

As humans, we’re programmed to cling to our comfort zone, hardwired to fear the unknown. Be it moving countries, changing jobs, pursuing a passion project… so many of us would rather stay unhappy than face uncertainty.

My husband, eternally a “rather oops than what if” kind of person, is a great embracer of change. He thrives on taking risks. I, far more cautious and pragmatic, am much more change averse. But I’ve found that when I’ve stepped out of my rhythmic patterns is when I’ve done my best work.

I’m much more intentional about change since I’ve lived in this region. As expats in the United Arab Emirates, you only have to look at the profound change that this country has undergone to see what is possible. And as we gear up to celebrate Union Day 2024, marking 53 years since the UAE was formed on December 2, we dedicate this month’s issue to the beauty, history and ambition of the UAE. From p15, we invite you to discover the best of the seven emirates and all that they have to offer, with guides on where to eat, stay, learn and play.

And as we’re all about change, this month will feature not just one, but seven collectable covers, created using AI art. These covers are visual odes to the vibrant DNA that makes up each emirate, their natural landscapes, and defining features brought to life using artificial intelligence. It is the perfect example of just how powerful embracing change can be.

Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON

Getting

my

glam

on

for events season with… Huda Beauty

Events season in Dubai is in full swing, and that means going from desk to dinner. Which also means, my handbag real estate is required to be efficient. A bronzer and blusher in one? Yes please. A dual-purpose brow pencil and shaper? Perfect. And now, thanks to the new Icy Nude drop from Huda Beauty, one eyeshadow palette equals a week’s worth of looks. I’ve adored collecting up the big eyeshadow palettes from Huda Beauty, and as this is going to be the last, I’m thrilled to have got my hands on it. @hudabeauty

Seeing the new Van Gogh masterpieces at… Louvre Abu Dhabi

You might think that after visiting two van Gogh museums in Amsterdam, going on immersive experiences in Dubai, and reading multiple books on the artist, I would be bored by now. But no. Not even close. So when it was announced a Van Gogh was coming to the capital, I got excited. The Dutch artist painted three versions of The Bedroom, one of which is now in Louvre Abu Dhabi, so I got to say hello to a second one.

Chasing away the midday blues with... Marsh’n’mallow

My trips downstairs to the office lobby usually happens for two reasons – to get water or in search of a sweet treat. I came across a new kiosk in Media One that’s opened, Marsh’n’mallow Galactic Puffsbasically upgraded marshmallows with different flavours and rocky road options. Of course I had to get myself a mixed bag. Sugar consumed, joy obtained and I’m ready for the rest of the day. @marshnmallowuniverse

Gaslighting

my son into

thinking he loves bath time with… Lush

To be clear, my son doesn’t dislike bath time. He just has the attention span of an over-caffeinated magpie. Getting him into the bath isn’t a problem, it’s getting him to stay in there long enough for it to have any dirt-purgative effect. Lush Bath Bombs have proved to be the only nonmedicated method so far with a 100 per cent success rate. Thanks to their latest Minecraft-themed collection, he starts asking for a bath at 6.57am and continues until and even after he has his evening bath. Netherite thought I’d see the day.

It’s that time of the year again when the Etihad Arena becomes a second home for those that like to get out and about in the capital. Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Drew Moreland

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Drew Moreland (@drewmorelanddj) voted Best DJ at the What’s On Nightlife Awards 2024. Here he shares some of his favourite spots that you need on your radar.

‘Gate 2’ at Iris is purely dedicated to underground house music. The space is purpose built for the underground intimate vibe, with a custom soundsystem and very little else. It’s no frills, no nonsense, and is purely about the music. The standout feature is that there’s no filming inside the venue, your phone will be stickered on entry covering your front and back camera, it forces you to be in the moment.

@gatetwobyiris

One place that nobody seems to know about, which has some of the best food I’ve ever experienced is Ronin at FIVE LUXE. This place deserves more notoriety.

@ronin_dubai

My job is very hectic and social, so I love tranquil places when I’m off-duty. The best pool we’ve found that fits that – and is family-friendly – is Sofitel Dubai The Palm. It’s huge and has so many options in one place: multiple pools, gorgeous beach views, and lots of places to eat. I can chill at one of the relaxed scenic pools, whilst my son also has the option of water slides, beach, ice cream and more.

@sofiteldubaipalm

One of my favourite Dubai restaurants is Pai Thai. You take a beautiful abra ride to the restaurant, you dine by the waterfront – and enjoy some of the best Thai food in Dubai. I love to take all my visitors here. Be sure to try the beef massaman.

@paithaidubai

Everybody that comes to Dubai should do a desert safari. You can experience dune bashing, sandboarding, camel rides, falconry, traditional dance and a desert BBQ. Then end the day with scenic sunset photo stops.

I recently discovered Hawkerboi in JLT. It’s such a cool spot serving the best Asian street food, hawker-style. It’s got a casual setting, with a super cool vibe, from the decor and lighting, to the view into the kitchen. A great experience, especially when you want something easy going, that’s not going to break the bank.

@hawker.boi

It was a big year for Rugby Sevens in 1995. The event, celebrating its 25th anniversary that year, was to be played on grass for the first time. As I noted in my editor’s letter, although it would perhaps alter the style of play, ‘the carnival atmosphere will remain the same – you really don’t have to be a sports fan to make a great weekend of it.’

Even 30 years ago, Rugby Sevens, now known as the Emirates Dubai 7s, was a weekend the entire country looked forward to, regardless of whether you were into rugby or not. Because from the very beginning, the tournament – the longest running sports event in the Middle East – has been about so much more than just rugby. When it began in 1970, a year before the formation of the United Arab Emirates, it was attended by only a handful of local teams and a scattering of spectators. But by 1995, the competition had grown into a Gulf-wide fixture, and was regarded as the second biggest event of its kind in the world. The year after, in 1996, it would host a qualifying round of the World Cup Sevens. And as the event grew on-pitch, the off-pitch spectacle surrounding the weekend also flourished, and by 2008, the Emirates Dubai 7s moved to its current home, The Sevens Stadium, where it had capacity for a crowd of over 50,000.

Fans come from across the globe naturally, for the sport, and this year will see participation from 128 countries across five disciplines, including rugby, netball and padel. But also, people

flock here for the fantastic live music across multiple stages, which comes complete with a headline set from Stormzy in 2024. And of course, all of the fantastic festival comradery, fancy dress, foodie pop-ups and family-friendly fun that makes this one of the best weekends on the UAE’s social calendar. See you at the Sevens.

Abu Dhabi – the capital of the UAE, a land of history, heritage and the foundations of this great union. It’s as much a high-flying metropolis as it is a community rooted in culture which is why we always say, you get the best of both worlds here.

Anantara Al Yamm

Sir Bani Yas Island is a natural jewel of sorts, with beautiful beaches, expansive desert, and a nature reserve home to 14,000 exotic animals. One of the three Anantara properties on the island, Anantara Al Yamm is both luxurious and unique. The 30-key, all-villa sanctuary is designed to look like a traditional Emirati fishing village, and besides the beautiful views of the waters a few steps away, indulge in beach horse riding and snorkeling.

The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort

One of the top stays on Saadiyat Island, The St. Regis is grand without overwhelming you with tacky luxury. Think eight floors built in smart sand-hued stone, giving it a Mediterranean mansion

feel from the outside. Once inside, plenty of marble, glass and oceanic shades ensure everywhere feels bright and breezy. The beach is right there for you to see and if you fancy, take a dip in. It’s one of those capital classics you can’t miss if you’re here.

Marmellata

Marmellata truly is a family restaurant and the brainchild of father-son duo Raj and Sebastian Dagstani, established in 2019. It operates as a no-fuss, no-frills, no-reservations spot

that serves incredible pizza. A hotspot in the capital, the core of Marmellata is the team that runs it, and the story of how it all began.

@marmellatalove

ERTH

Located within Qasr Al Hosn, which is another great spot to explore, this is where time slows down. ERTH is calm, serene and, well, earthy, with dim lights and a quiet, uplifted elegance found in few places. The Michelin star Emirati fare will keep you coming back for more.

@erth.alhosn

The Al Ain Palace is one of the best reinstated palaces in Abu Dhabi, and was the home of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE and the frst President of the UAE. He lived here with his family until the late sixties, before he moved to Abu Dhabi. The palace and private residence provide insights into the lives and culture of both the ruling family and the community until the country’s transformation after the discovery of petroleum. The oldest building in the palace dates back to 1937, to give you an idea of the history.

@visitabudhabi

Al Wathba Fossil Dunes Reserve

A bit of natural history for you, and quite a spectacular bit at that. The Al Wathba Fossil Dunes Reserve is located 45 kilometres outside Abu Dhabi city and is home to more than 1,700 fossil dunes. The stone structures were formed with the force of wind and sediment deposits over four million years, according to experts. The reserve itself is visitorfriendly, with trails, benches, shading, light and sound shows and an amphitheatre. If you’re looking to explore the natural history of the country, this is a good place to start.

The famous emirate...

WORDS: MILES BUCKERIDGE

The most fascinating aspect of Dubai is its hall of mirrors quality. It has a unique gift of being able to reflect or represent an almost incalculable number of different things to different people. To some, it’s a record-breaking citadel of cloud-interrupting towers; to others it’s a land of five-star holidays and unending sun; at times it wears the hat of custodian, proudly curating and celebrating regional customs and history; it’s an epicentre of elite gastronomy, showing off multi-Michelin Starred dinners alongside globally diverse street food; it’s a place of calibrated vision, refusal to accept the impossible, a beacon of (and to) the pioneering spirit, an engineering marvel, an innovative, culturally chimeric metropolis that has no interest in slowing down. So I’m pitching this guide as if it’s an itinerary for someone in the farcically implausible situation of not knowing what Duabi is. Max impact in minimum time.

Hotel is a champion of local culture, an identity that’s on display throughout the guest experience. This boutique hospitality gem was once the famous Seddiqi family’s home, before being given an artistic reimagining by Mona Hauser. Each of the 15 sumptuouslyappointed guest rooms has its own unique design; there’s an onsite café, a gallery, trio of windmills and a pair of breezy courtyard spaces; but the real art of a stay at XVA, is the proximity to Al Fahidi’s storied alleyways. The network of museums, studios, and exhibition spaces is just a merry abra ride away from Old Dubai’s bustling souk district. From Dhs430 per night. @xvagallery

Bab Al Shams

There’s a timeless romance to a luxury desert stay. A sense of being grounded in the etherial that comes from wandering beneath an unobscured majlis of stars, seeing the horizon-deep undulation of amber dunes, absorbing Bedouin-inspired glamour and savouring the silent seclusion of a real oasis. One of Dubai’s longest serving sand-hemmed sojourn sites, is Bab Al Shams.

Hatta for an afternoon of paddle-boarding and zorbing. On the way back to the city, we’re taking a twilight desert safari detour with Arabian Adventures (from Dhs479) and then a lightning-quick lap of Dubai Mall for souvenir shopping, an Andrea Bocelli backed performance by the Dubai Fountains and obligatory selfie with the Burj Khalifa.

It was recently renovated and whilst it still offers the same suite of safari, spa and heritage experiences; its enhancements to the rooms, shared leisure spaces (including the infinity pool) and addition of its own version of reverently Middle Eastern restaurant, Ninive – it’s an upgrade that’s well worth investigating. From Dhs1,530 per night.

La Petite Maison (LPM)

Whilst it’s almost impossible to pick a favourite tome from Dubai’s fine dining library, it’s just as tough to find a bad culinary story. Al Ustad Special Kabab

This uncontrived meat grilling icon was born in 1978 and counts royals and international A-listers amongst its devoted patrons. Which should help persuade you of its worthiness for carrying ‘Special’ in its name. It represents incredible value, delivers outstanding meaty feasts, and is a delicious dose of local history.

Rain Room Sharjah

A fun spot in Sharjah, and probably its most unique is Rain Room Sharjah. The immersive installation is a permanent space, which invites visitors to walk into a downpour without getting drenched. When you’re detected, it will send feedback to the system to stop the rain from falling in the location you are standing. The

installation uses 2,500 litres of water – none of the water goes to waste and is recycled via a self-cleaning process. It’s perfect for the whole family, and you will get some really fun photographs from the experience. The best part? It comes with a pocket-friendly price of Dhs25 per person.

The green emirate…

What it lacks in size, the UAE’s second smallest emirate, Umm Al Quwain makes up for in rustic charm and natural beauty. It might not have the splashy starlets of some of its neighbours in the attraction or hotel space, but its verdant mangroves and golden beaches provide the backdrop for gorgeous glamping options, family-friendly fun, and a slice of local history too.

Tickets are Dhs160 for adults and Dhs100 for children. @dreamlandaquaparkuae

The Mangrove Beach

Anyone who thinks the UAE is lacking natural beauty will quickly have their opinion changed at Umm Al Quwain’s mangrove beach. Gazing out to the calm waters of Al Yafra Creek, this remote stretch of sand has dedicated areas for

camping BBQs and day guests, so the area remains largely unspoiled. As such, the wildlife watching is excellent: so count pink flamingos and herons as your daycation mates. Your best bet is to bring your own food (and be sure to take the rubbish away) but there is also a restaurant and café nearby, where you can also hire kayaks to enjoy the mangroves from the water.

UAQ National Museum

Despite being the second smallest emirate, Umm Al Quwain has a lot of history and culture to offer. Its National Museum showcases its treasured heritage, which dates back to 1768. This fortlike complex is located in the Old Souq area, with a turret standing tall, matching the traditional look and feel of the surrounding buildings. Entry is Dhs4.

The dreamy emirate…

As the only emirate on the UAE’s east coast, Fujairah lies between the rocky Hajar mountains and the sparkling Indian Ocean and is a popular weekend getaway for those looking for a change of scenery, a dose of nature, and an element of tranquility. For diving enthusiasts, the waters around Snoopy Island are a dream. Swim, snorkel, or scuba dive around this iconic island, known for its vibrant marine life – from turtles to reef sharks – and shipwrecks. It’s one of the best diving spots in the UAE and a must for underwater explorers.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land, Wadi Abadilah offers a scenic hike through banana trees, date palms, and lush farmland. The trail is easy to moderate and great for a family outing, where you can spot natural pools and flowing streams in the wadis.

History lovers can visit Fujairah Fort, a testament to the emirate’s rich past. This

17th-century fort, perched on a hilltop, offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and is a great place to delve into the emirate’s Emirati heritage. The fort is known for its significant role in resisting invasion and bombardment by the British Royal Navy. Nature lovers should also make time to visit the UAE Flower Farm, nestled in the foothills of the Hajar Mountains. Known for its beautiful exotic flowers like anthuriums, orchids, and heliconias, the farm offers guided tours year-round, with the best time to visit being November to March. Stroll through the fragrant gardens, learn about the farm’s operations, and pick up some local flowers to take home.

Turtle Beach Bar

Located within Royal Beach Hotel, Turtle Beach Bar has an amazing view of Dibba Rock and a chilled, holiday beach shack vibe. The beautiful spot overlooks the sparkling Indian Ocean with direct access to the beach and serves lunch and dinner from 11am every day. On the menu? You can enjoy cocktails, mocktails, fish and chips, speciality coffee, burgers, and more while taking in the scenes and sea breeze. You can even take your four-legged friends. @turtle_ beach_restaurant_bar

Dibba Bay

For a fresh, farm-to-table experience Dibba Bay’s rustic shop in Fujairah serves fresh oysters straight from the farm, just a stone’s throw away. It is the first farm in the Middle East to grow gourmet oysters and has become the primary supplier of fresh, juicy oysters to the UAE’s best restaurants. For Dhs127, you can get a dozen juicy shucked oysters served with lemon and vinaigrette, perfect after a day of exploring. @dibbabay

Hidden gems

The quaint village of Masafi is around 30 minutes away from Fujairah and the scenic drive makes it well worth the trip. The adventure emirate...

Known as the ‘nature emirate’ to some, and to the more daring ones as the UAE’s ‘adventure capital’, Ras Al Khaimah, affectionately referred to as RAK by residents of the UAE is home to everything you can look for in a relatively slower-paced part of the country, including rugged mountains, attractions celebrating the history and heritage of the UAE, worldclass adventure activities and camps, and superb luxury hotels and resorts.

Let’s take you through what you should try when you’re here.

Stay Here

The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Hamra Beach

Made up of 32 exclusive private villas with private pools, this boutique hotel is the kind of spot where you can just hideaway in the comforts of your villa all weekend long. The villas are inspired by bedouin tents – if bedouins had impeccable taste and were partial to chic monochrome furniture. The outdoor space is seriously wow, with a private pool, outdoor shower and bath tub, as well as a long path leading towards the beach, and a sundeck at the end to watch the sunset. There’s one on-site restaurant, Shore House, a nautical themed all-day diner, but it serves a wealth of tasty international dishes. @ritzcarltonalhamrabeach

The under the radar emirate

Some of Ajman’s history dates as far back as 3,000 BCE with countless incredible archeological sites to be explored, pristine white beaches, and buckets more funin-the-sun activities that are perfect for a staycation in the winter season.

The Oberoi Beach Resort, Al Zorah

If you’re going to be doing a staycation in Ajman, it’s only fair that you treat yourself and do it right. This is exactly why we’d recommend checking in to The Oberoi Beach Resort, Al Zorah. Take a group of friends along with you and check-in to the gorgeous three-bedroom villa that sleeps six for Dhs7,500 a night (which works out to Dhs,1,250 per person. Which is less than their twin room at Dhs1,600 a night).

There are plenty of incredible watersports to get involved in. Quest for Adventure for example, will take you on a mangrove kayak (Dhs175) nature tour. The fun and informative guided tour is an exploration of the Al Zorah Nature Reserve while sitting on double kayaks. questforadventure.net

Masfout Fort and Museum

A way away from the beaches of Ajman is Masfout. Originally well positioned to be able to spot bandits preparing attacks – the Masfout fort is now more of a historical

viewing deck, where you can enjoy the view of farmlands and Hajar mountains. The Masfout Museum (Dhs5) is a treasure trove of Emirati history. Full of old photos, archaeological finds, and traditional tools – evidence of life dates back to 5,000 BCE in Masfout, with pre-historic graves, stone circles and more have been found dating to the Umm al Nar Bronze Age. As the area continued to develop into the 1940s, there was a shortage of food and the land was frequently attacked and so the people of Masfout appealed to the ruler of Ajman, thus making the area territory of the emirate.

ILIOS BEACH CLUB ON HUDAYRIYAT ISLAND

Grecian elegance meets waterside luxury at Abu Dhabi’s cool new beach club

BACKGROUND

On the sidelines of the world’s most advanced man-made wave facility, Surf Abu Dhabi, the UAE capital receives a gorgeous new beach club, Ilios. The facility has a great poolside bar in Apollo, ample seating across two levels, and plenty of sun beds so you can lounge about and work on your tan, Mediterranean delights and brilliant beverages are served up on a menu inspired by Greek mythology.

AMBIANCE

Ilios gets plenty right, and arrives on Hudayriyat Island successfully blending the serene beauty of the Greek Islands with the unmistakeable essence of Mediterranean charm. The venue’s interiors introduce you to spacey, light, luxury, without deserting its wave-side identity for a second. The wooden finish and outdoorsy tone add to the Mediterranean, beachside feel, and you can’t help but stroll around and explore all of it before you grab a booth.

On the inside, the upper level takes you to Euphoria Lounge and Bar, with a terrace that allows you to get uninterrupted views of the Abu Dhabi sunset, while surfing action unfolds beneath. On the ground level, guests can explore the elegant indoor dining area, Meraki Dining & Terrace. Outside by the pool, you’ll find yourself deliberating whether to stretch out on their Oasis loungers or to get comfortable in the Iris Cabana.

FOOD AND DRINK

Amid days of unsettled weather and October winds, we beat the humidity with an order of the Cerberus Inferno mocktail (Dhs60) with sweet, tangy and spiced flavours. The beverage is inspired by the legendary three-headed “guardian of the underworld”, an ode to Greek mythology, and with black tea and notes of lemon, and ginger demerara, punches your tastebuds just enough with its bold flavours.

For eats, we kick things off with a cold appetiser of the florinis (Dhs65), marinated sweet peppers with aged balsamic and caper berries. The idea is to keep it light this evening without missing out on Ilios’ flavours, and this is a great start. For a heavier option, it’s the forest risotto (Dhs140) we pick, with black truffle and wild mushrooms. It’s everything you want from a risotto: rich

and creamy, while showcasing the flavours of multiple mushroom varieties. A lot of spots overdo it with their portion sizes, and we’re not fans of wasting food, but this dish at Ilios is just right for one diner.

For dessert, we get the citrus éclair (Dhs60) with Amalfi lemon curd, and while you’ll enjoy spoonfuls of the cream and mixed berries on top, it’s one big bite of the éclair itself and a mouthful of its incredible lemon filling that will make you grateful you went with this one.

For those that are heading to Ilios for more luxuriant options, there’s plenty to pick from such as the 9+ grade 400 grain-fed tomahawk steak at Dhs110 per kg, and Australian black Angus prime rib at Dhs500 for 800g. Want high luxury? There’s also beluga caviar at Dhs2,100 for 50g.

Ilios, Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi, Sun to Wed noon to 1am, Thurs to Sat noon to 1.30am.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Ilios makes a memorable Abu Dhabi debut, successfully positioning itself alongside the capital’s beachside hospitality heavyweights.

MAJLIS BY PIERRE HERMÉ

Classing up the lobby lounge scene in the capital...

Majlis by Pierre Hermé has arrived at the Rosewood Abu Dhabi, after the swanky Al Maryah Island-based property’s lobby underwent an extensive summer transformation with the promise of better things to come. Unrelated to French high-luxury fashion house Hermès, the brand-new opening is the brainchild of French pastry chef Pierre Hermé, who was crowned the best pastry chef on the planet by the Academy of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2016.

LOOK AND FEEL

Majlis by Pierre Hermé is a full fledged, all-day dining option where Parisian pâtisserie meets traditional majlis. The first thing you’ll notice as you turn left from the Rosewood’s main lobby is the abundance of natural light washing over the premises.

At the counter, you’re introduced to a lavish pick of artisanal French pastries, croissants and several different colours and flavours of macarons. Aesthetically-pleasing towers of cake boxes adorn the wall, making you feel like a kid (or adult, or critic, or guest) in a candy store. Majlis by Pierre Hermé reimagines tradition through subtle, yet stark innovation.

The further you drift away from the counter, the more it begins to assume the form of a cafe, lounge, and networking zone, whether it’s a business meeting, or just a rendezvous with awardwinning pastries you’re here for.

FOOD AND DRINK

Our midday meet begins with a cup of their espresso with milk in a 7 oz. serving (Dhs45). This sugar-free, frothy mug of caffeinated indulgence immediately dials us in.

We’re first treated to the croque monsieur – a trio of neatly served portions of toast with turkey ham, rich bechamel and Comte cheese, accompanied by a side of rocket. One whiff will teleport you to early mornings on a school day, or the simple, comforting indulgence you seek at a family-owned diner with the classic, allstar toast-and-cheese combination proving its standing as a timeless, winning choice. We’re then served the pain perdu

Words: Dinesh Ramanathan

basilique (Dhs105), French toast appearing as a fluffy cube of carb-tastic indulgence with a sprinkling of basil, and a serving of goat cheese espuma and tomato. They get the balance just right, with basil serving as the ideal accessory alongside classic French toast without taking away from its authenticity. For a brief detour from rich, breaded creations, we’re recommended the sea bream ceviche (Dhs95). This is a cooling, light, creation with candied lemon zest, a light dish we recommend savouring as you drink in views of the Al Maryah canal perched on their outdoor terrace, with cooler days in the capital just around the corner.

Majlis by Pierre Hermé does pain perdu creations exceptionally well, and their menu proves they delight in experimenting. We’re served a variation called the pain perdu vanille (Dhs105), and our first thoughts biting into this dish are: “This is happiness on a plate”. This is the show-stopper for us, served with a garnishing of berries, beautifully adorning your plate.

Majlis by Pierre Hermé’s brand-new Abu Dhabi outpost is no different.

ABU DHABI ART FAIR RETURNS

Every November, local and international galleries come together in the capital for Abu Dhabi Art Fair. In its 16th edition this year, the fair provides a great platform for these galleries to display and sell their artworks, and runs from November 20 to 24 at popular art centre, Manarat Al Saadiyat (MAS).

WHAT TO EXPECT

Art. A lot of art, in various forms. Participants have been carefully curated and invited by the organisers, with some having exhibited their work at the festival before, so you may see some of your favourite artists returning.

But take note, it’s not the popular galleries you will find here. Emerging and young galleries have been given this platform to showcase their art, allowing their artists to gain recognition or have their talent be discovered. You will also find galleries that are offering their art for under US$3,000 (approximately Dhs11,000), so if you want to start a collection on a

budget, this is a good starting point.

Don’t forget, you will also be able to check out several installations across different locations in Abu Dhabi. One that may catch your attention is a giant Misbahah (Islamic prayer beads), which falls under The Beacon of Light Collection, jointly created by 81 Designs, a UAE-based social enterprise and Pakistan’s Studio Lél, represented by multi-disciplinary artist Meherunnisa Asad. Not all exhibitions can be tangible, and Abu Dhabi Art Fair also offers a stage for the performing arts. Performances take place across

the city and can even be experienced through a virtual platform for those that are unable to witness them in person.

For those seeking to grow in understanding and knowledge, expect a series of cultural talks by curators and artists from the art fair, and leaders from top UAE art institutions. The program will be available soon on abudhabiart.ae.

Lastly, there’s something for the foodies as well, with Culinary Art returning to flavourfully combine a dining and art experience for you. Entry to Abu Dhabi Art Fair is free of charge, but make sure you register on tickets.abudhabiart.ae

FILM INTERVIEW:

THE KE INGREDIENT

We talk to Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan about his upcoming film Love Hurts

If you’ve ever unironically owned a shellsuit, or can, whilst blindfolded, rewind a cassette tape using an HB pencil – there’s a good chance, your first introduction to actor Ke Huy Quan was as Data in The Goonies (1985) or Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). These were huge, epochal blockbusters, but the talented child actor who starred in them grew up to take on roles on the other side of the camera, and that’s largely how things remained until the huge 2022 hit Everything Everywhere All At Once. Ke Huy Quan’s return to front-of-house cinema was marked with an Oscar win for his interpretation of Waymond Wang. Since then, he’s appeared in the second season of Marvel’s Loki and provided the voice for Han in Kung Fu Panda 4. But it’s his next project that his fans both new and (let’s say) vintage

Lio, everybody, they did their fights because we have an incredible action team who spent a lot of work training everybody, including myself.

should be really excited for. He’s taking the lead in the martial artspacked actioncomedy, Love Hurts, directed by stunt impresario Jonathan Eusebio. We caught up with Quan following the release of the trailer, this is what he had to say...

The trailer reveals that you’re pretty handy in a fight, can you tell us about your martial arts background?

My first exposure to martial arts was in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Spielberg and George Lucas hired a Taekwondo expert to teach me how to do some kicks in one of the fight scenes. We shot the movie in London and when I came back to America, my brother and I signed up for classes and we studied for many years. During that time I became obsessed with Hong Kong action movies and their stars – Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Jet Li, all of those iconic action heroes.

When you watch those movies, you can actually see the actors doing the fights themselves, it’s clearly not a stunt double, and there’s something really special about that. For Love Hurts, the fights are very grounded. There’s no wire work. It’s all punches and kicks.

It’s very real. And what’s incredible is all the actors in this movie, including Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu – who has martial arts background – Marshawn Lynch, Mustafa,

You’ve been involved with lots of different parts of the filmmaking process, both in front and behind the camera, what are the most special elements of that process?

When I was working as an action choreographer, one of my responsibilities was to train the actors. The great Koi Yuan took me under his wing and that’s where I learned the language of how to choreograph a fight sequence. I trained Hugh Jackman for X-Men for example and on a lot of the movies, I trained the actors who didn’t have a martial arts background. I taught them how to punch, how to kick and how to make it look good on screen. I almost feel like everything that I have done for the last 20 years was me getting prepared to do Love Hurts

How much can you tell us about your character in Love Hurts?

So I play Marvin Gable, who is an affable real estate agent who loves his job, loves the 9 to 5, just a normal life. He’s very enthusiastic, he loves helping people’s dream of owning a home come true and nothing about his life is dangerous until everything becomes dangerous.

This movie is high energy, actionpacked with lots of punches and kicks. There’s a lot of heart to it and you’ll learn through my character that being normal is not as easy as it looks.

Love Hurts is scheduled to hit UAE cinemas in February 2025. The trailer is out now.

ABased on Martel’s 2001 Man Booker Prize-winning novel, which also inspired Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning film, the stage adaptation tells the incredible story of Piscine Molitor Patel – better known as Pi. The young boy survives a shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean, only to find himself sharing a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Chakrabarti’s adaptation goes beyond a mere retelling CULTURE

LIFE OF PI

Experience the dazzling stage adaptation of Yann Martel’s classic novel, where puppetry, fantasy, and survival come to life…

bu Dhabi is set to host one of the most captivating theatrical events of the year as Life of Pi, Lolita Chakrabarti’s Olivier Award-winning stage adaptation of Yann Martel’s bestselling novel, comes to Etihad Arena this November. This highly anticipated production promises to immerse audiences in the extraordinary tale of survival, using innovative storytelling, puppetry, and stagecraft to bring Martel’s richly imaginative world to life.

of the plot, delivering a visually arresting experience that blends intricate puppetry, soundscapes, and lighting to heighten the fantastical elements of the story.

The production’s most striking feature is the masterful puppetry that brings Richard Parker and other animals to life. In the original London show, the seven puppeteers who operate the tiger collectively won an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor – a first in the award’s history. Their coordination and artistry imbue the tiger with an astonishingly lifelike presence, evoking awe and emotion in audiences. Richard Parker’s movements and expressions, whether fierce or vulnerable, make him feel like a genuine creature sharing Pi’s journey, blurring the line between puppet and animal.

For Chakrabarti, she sees Life of Pi as “a story of survival” that she believes resonates deeply with contemporary audiences. “All of us can fundamentally relate to the fight for survival, whether that’s physical, emotional,

or psychological,” she said in a recent interview. Her adaptation explores the resilience of the human spirit, as well as the stories we create to cope with trauma. For Pi, survival is not just about outlasting the dangers of the ocean but about grappling with the emotional scars that follow.

First presented in the UK in 2019, Life of Pi quickly garnered critical acclaim. Its London run earned five Olivier Awards, including Best New Play, with critics praising its theatrical ingenuity. When the production made its way to Broadway, it received similar accolades, garnering three Tony Awards.

What sets Life of Pi apart from other productions is its demand for imagination. The story introduces both creators and audiences to a world where reality and fantasy intertwine, and where belief can be the key to survival. The play’s core themes – faith, resilience, and the power of storytelling – are woven into every aspect of the production, from the dynamic puppetry to the nuanced performances. As Abu Dhabi audiences prepare to enter Pi’s world this November, they’ll be treated to a theatrical experience like no other. Get your tickets now.

CULTURE // ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Raghad Murad

…and her fun size trail blaze of self-expression

Words: Manaal Fatimah

Raghad Murad was a bright-eyed university student when the idea to start a sticker business came to her. The year was 2020, the peak of the pandemic’s most prohibitive protocols, and the need of the hour for Raghad - Arabic stickers that stood out. She had set off to source some for herself, and surprisingly couldn’t find any.

“I would find Arabic ones but they were expensive or the designs would be super cliché,” Raghad tell us. “So, that was the starting point, and because stickers are also the easiest form of artwork - it’s very simple.”

And just like that Waggish was born, brought to life by her and three of her friends. Now, it’s been four years and the trajectory of growth for this little homegrown business built on pure passion, the technicolour fuel of pop culture and the fortifying powers of girlhood is a sweet victory pill.

I first met Raghad in January of 2023 and since then, the other team members have departed (but not in spirit) on their individual paths to find their own thing. This is Raghad’s thing and she is determined to unlock the full potential of the cocktail that is her craft and her commerce.

But what exactly does that level up look like?

“The first two years were just really like building a library of designs and then we would produce them on everything - so, shirts and totes and mugs,” explains Raghad. “Now I’ve decided to take Waggish to its full potential by not just doing the stickers but do more original products, more collaborations with other brands.”

The bright colours, bold lines, slogans and messages all come from Raghad’s mind, one artistically inclined towards the infinite universe of digital design. She draws these original prints by hand, featuring Arabic and some English quips, quotes and catchphrases with all the wit of the modern Internet citizen. It’s just an uber fun way to celebrate life or make a social statement and what is one to do but gravitate?

In this current state of transformation, the brand is no longer a simple store for stickers it’s a full-bodied creative brand with a unique illustration style that uses the flavour of our day-to-day lives to create products with flair, finesse and personality by the boatload.

“When Subway reached out, I was in complete shock,” recalls Raghad, when asked of her favourite collaborations so far. “Now it’s an international brand that is collaborating with Waggish – that one was the biggest one when it came. After that, it was Rimmel London. TikTok Business was really big too and Shahid from MBC.”

In Raghad’s eyes, stickers are an expression of the self, and when you have strong stances on certain topics, they can be used to visually represent that. Which is also why Waggish doesn’t shy away from going down that route.

“Stickers, at their essence, are a visual expression of who you are. The way that you put stickers on your laptop or your iPad, they tell stories about your hobbies, what you stand for, stuff you like.”

“I think because Waggish was born in the UAE, has all those Middle Eastern people following it and it’s like an Arab brand, we need to have a voice to share and promote that. It’s not like a political approach, but more like an awareness approach, more of like lets open this conversation – it doesn’t have to be scary to talk about those things. “

The ultimate goal for Waggish is to set up a physical shop, a destination that doesn’t seem very far off from this vantage point. Whenever it does, you’ll find me there, stocking up on my own fun size bits of self-expression.

TSURF, SAMBAL, SAFARI: THE BEAUTY OF SOUTH COAST Sri Lanka’s

Whether you want adventure, wellness, beach, or culture, you’ll find it hard not to fall in love with this tropical island…

he Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka, with its diverse landscapes and enchanting culture, invites visitors to embrace a slower pace of life. A four-hour flight from Dubai, this epic destination is a treasure trove of adventure with palm-tree lined beaches, cool surf stays, yoga retreats, and an abundance of wildlife. On the south coast, there’s a shared love for the ocean among locals and visitors alike, where the rhythm of the waves matches the relaxed tempo of life.

Whisk around in a tuk-tuk for some beach-hopping – perhaps a breezy ride to Weligama Beach, one of the world’s best spots to learn to surf. For a change of pace, take a scenic day trip to the picturesque city of Galle, where you can pick up postcard souvenirs from the beloved Stick No Bills, admire the architecture of the historic Fort, and cool off with seaweed tacos at MARU while you people-watch.

Make your way to Smoke and Bitters, one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, nestled in a coconut grove in

Hiriketiya, to enjoy a sunset cocktail and delicious bites. Over in Matara, The Doctor’s House is a laid-back haven for travelers, surfers, and families to connect over great food and unforgettable parties.

And then, of course, there’s the food. Oh, the food. Some of the best in Sri Lanka can be found on the streets or in the homes of locals. A visit to the familyrun No.1 Dewmini Roti Shop in Mirissa is a must, where you can savour Sri Lankan dishes like seafood roti and kottu in a serene garden setting.

While the high season on the south coast runs from December to May, I fell in love during the low season – fewer crowds, a little more rain, and just as much magic. In other words: there’s a Sri Lanka for everybody, all year round.

WHERE TO STAY

If

you like: Nature, wellness, luxury, relaxation

Kurulu Bay

Words like ‘sustainable’ and ‘eco-resort’ are often overused in the travel industry but Kurulu Bay, a boutique hotel set on the shores of Sri Lanka’s largest lake, embodies these principles in every sense. The serene retreat boasts a mere 14 luxurious accommodations, from treehouses to two-bedroom cottages with private pools, each built in harmony with the surrounding nature, without a single tree being cut down. The design is contemporary and beguiling with unified indoor-outdoor design and floor-toceiling windows that frame Koggala lake and dense jungle, where crocodiles reside and monkeys swing playfully in the trees above. Spend blissful days drifting away by one of the two pools, gentle swims, morning yoga sessions, and calming massages at the spa, fueled by soul-nourishing homegrown dishes at The Kitchen (we recommend the prawn curry and chargrilled cabbage). For a bit of adventure, guests can take a boat ride across Koggala Lake, exploring its islands, Buddhist temples, and spice gardens. This eco-friendly hideaway is also just inland from famous surf spot, Ahangama Beach, and a tuk-tuk ride away from the historic fort city of Galle. Life at Kurulu Bay is slow, you’ll cherish every second and appreciate the beauty of life.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge

Wild Coast Tented Lodge sits on the edge of Yala National Park, spilling onto the rugged shores of Sri Lanka’s southeast coast. It’s made up of 28 cocoon-like tents with four-poster beds, freestanding copper bathtubs, luxurious amenities, air conditioning, and private pools. Game drives into Yala, led by the lodge’s expert rangers twice daily, reveal the park’s teeming wildlife: elephants, spotted deer, mongoose, water buffalo, rare birds, and much more. Thanks to the lodge’s priority access, and after the sighting of a jackal, a symbol of good luck, we were fortunate enough to spot the elusive leopard and even a black bear on an early morning safari. Drinking and dining unfold in the breezy open-air restaurant, where an eclectic selection of Sri Lankan and international dishes, made with local ingredients, is served. Swimming and lounging take place at the stunning infinity pool, which flows down the middle of the bar and restaurant, while sun loungers spill down the sand dunes overlooking the sea. Private cooking classes are also available if you’re keen to take home the secrets of a fine Sri Lankan curry. And the warm staff will make you feel entirely deserving of the mimosa-fuelled breakfasts. You’ll leave feeling well taken care of, immersed in nature, and well-fed, ready to return with everyone you know. GOING DUTCH ON THE ART AND HEART IN

Amsterdam

Trains, frames and starry, starry nights

Culture queens and kings, if you have a few days to spend in Amsterdam and want to visit some of the city’s cultural best, you’ve got a lot of difficult choices to make with around 75 museums and galleries at your disposal. To help you with your day tour dilemma we’ve put together a guide to some of the city’s best loved art hubs. And honestly, sometimes the path most travelled is the way to do it, especially if it’s your first time visiting a place.

WHERE TO STAY

Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam

Located in the heart of Amsterdam right opposite the Royal Palace of Amsterdam is five-star Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky – a hotel with a charming history. The building was purchased by Mr Krasnapolsky in 1865 who turned it into a coffee house. Fuelled by ambition, Mr Krasnapolsky expanded his cafe by acquiring a second adjacent building, today known as the Grand Cafe Krasnapolsky. But the dream was still incomplete. Expansions took place again in 1883 with the introduction of 125 rooms. Later in 1927, the hotel was further extended and the entrance shifted in the direction of Dam Square. Nearly a century later, after years of refurbishment and extensive renovations, the hotel is now known as Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky with a total of 451 rooms and suites.

We know the phrase ‘heart of the city’ is used too loosely these days, but it certainly rings true for this Anantara hotel. You’re an 11-minute walk away from the Amsterdam Central Station and a 15-minute tram ride away from Museumplein where some of the top museums are.

If you’ve set your heart on this Amsterdam Dam-located hotel, there are premier rooms, deluxe rooms, a presidential suite and a royal suite. Your views can either be the stunning Dam Square which, is forever bustling with tourists and residents, or you have unique views of the canals of Amsterdam. At night, if you’ve opted for a Dam

Square view, catch the sky changing colours and clouds passing by as it sets behind the gorgeous palace.

Guests staying at the hotel can refuel with a breakfast spread at the historic Wintergarden. You will tuck into international bites under a lofty glass ceiling dating back to 1880, which fills the area with natural light. Our top tip: Arrive to breakfast early to enjoy at a leisurely pace. It also ensures you will leave the hotel on time to beat the crowds at the museums or attractions of the day.

After your day of exploring, head back to the hotel and indulge at Michelin-Starred The White Room, a restaurant, which was unveiled by the owner in 1885, deeming it one of Amsterdam’s oldest. For sips, cocktail bar The Tailor serves up drinks so good it has picked up awards. But if you want a memorable meal, head to the modern yet elegant Grand Café Krasnapolsky, which serves afternoon tea, lunch and dinner.

If you need some pampering after reaching peak step count during your trip, make a booking at the Anantara Spa and allow the team to work out those aches and pains. Oh, and if you have spare time during your trip, the hotel is also home to a 24-hour gym.

Room rates start from Dhs1,180 for rooms in November.

THINGS TO DO

VAN GOGH MUSEUM

If you’re even the slightest fan of Dutch artist, Vincent van Gogh, this museum will be the highlight of your trip. The Van Gogh Museum located in Museumplein is devoted to the life and work of the impressionist artist, home to over 200 paintings and almost 500 drawings. No Starry Night here, but you can visit many of his famous works, including Sunflowers (1889), The Bedroom (1888), Irises (1890), Almond Blossoms (1890), and The Potato Eaters (1885). If you quickly bounce from one painting to the other, you can easily finish the museum within 90 minutes, but if you want to take in the brush strokes, hang onto every word of the audio guide, expect to spend at least three to four hours.

TOP TIP: Book tickets well in advance, and visit first thing at 9am to enjoy an almost one-on-one experience with Van Gogh. Take the audio guide, it is worth your euros. Dhs88 per adult, under 18s free, vangoghmuseum.nl

KRÖLLER-MÜLLER MUSEUM

ANNE FRANK HOUSE

Your visit to Amsterdam will be marked incomplete without a visit to the Anne Frank House. You may have read her famous diary, or seen documentaries or films narrating her and her family’s life during her two years in hiding before they were betrayed, but nothing brings the story any closer to life than visiting the actual house. Inside, visitors will get to see the original bookcase that hid the door to the secret annex, Anne Frank’s room, and even Anne Frank’s diary, which survived the war. A highlight of the visit? When the audio guide goes silent as you walk through the secret annex allowing you to experience how quiet the family had to be as soon as the sun came up.

TOP TIP: Book your tickets well in advance as they sell out. Try to read The Diary of Anne Frank before your visit, and don’t forget the free audio guide. At the shop you can pick up postcards for memorabilia, an empty diary, and even a special 75th anniversary of the first edition of Anne Frank’s diary.

If you want more Van Gogh, block a day to visit the Kröller-Müller Museum, home to the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. The museum is a train and two bus rides away in Otterlo. It is home to the spellbinding Café Terrace at Night (1888), Four Sunflowers Gone to Seed (1887) – a personal favourite – and Bridge at Arles (1888). Due to thinner crowds, you truly feel like you’re on a private tour. Besides Van Gogh, you can also find masterpieces by Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan. The museum is also located in a National Park called Hoge Veluwe, a 13,343-acre park where you can enjoy a sculpture garden, nature, wildlife and horse riding.

REMBRANDT HOUSE MUSEUM

Walk through the doors of The Rembrandt House Museum and you’ve entered the Dutch artist’s world back in the 17th century. Based on a journal entry by Rembrandt himself, curators were able to lay out his home the way it was all those years ago. As you walk through, you learn about his early life, his family, where he worked, his studio and etches and the room where he taught his students. You can tour the museum at your own pace with the help of an audio guide. TOP TIP: Spend time listening to the staff as they explain how Rembrandt would have mixed his paints, and if you want to take a piece of Rembrandt home with you, pick up an etching from the shop. ROYAL PALACE AMSTERDAM

Ever walked by a palace and wondered what it looked like on the inside? The Royal Palace Amsterdam is a magnificent building bragging Baroque architecture used by the Dutch Royal House. But it also welcomes visitors where you can enjoy Amsterdam’s rich history. It was Amsterdam’s Town Hall for 150 years, and its interiors are just as stunning, adorned with paintings, sculptures, and important items of history. On the ground floor, you will find the tribunal area decorated elaborately with the marble works of sculptor Artus Quellinus. While the craft is mesmerising, ensure you listen to the audio guide to hear about this space’s interesting history.

TOP TIP: Since the venue is also used for official royal events and state ceremonies, check their website before confirming plans for the day so to not make a mess of your schedule. Dhs50 per adult, under 18s free, paleisamsterdam.nl

If you want to break up your museum-packed schedule, book a Wine & Cheese Canal Tour, visit the stores by the Amsterdam Dam and pick up your souvenirs and stroopwafels, visit Tony’s Chocolonely and make your own chocolate bar, and head to A’DAM Lookout for endless views of Amsterdam.

IMMERSIVE ART EXPERIENCES

VAN GOGH X REMBRANDT

At Noorderkerk (Dutch for northern church) is a 17th-century Protestant church, a spot visited by Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt. Although the two Dutch masters did not meet, this digital exhibition showcases how Rembrandt’s work had a significant impact on van Gogh. On the inner walls and roof of the church, we see a 45-minute projection of both their works on one canvas, with van Gogh’s ‘voice’ filling the silent space (which we know is true as they are words taken from his letters to his brother, Theo).

REMBRANDT EXPERIENCE

If touring Rijksmuseum has made your feet sore, amble over to Rembrandt Experience where you can sit back, relax and listen to the story of Rembrandt. The 25-minute experience invites you to step back in time to 1663 and visit the artist’s last studio. Through video projections, sound, scents, and music, you will go on a journey of the painter’s life. Before you leave don’t forget to get a photo from the AI Rembrandt Portrait Generator and walk home with a historic portrait prepared in Rembrandt’s style.

December might be front of mind when you think of festive calendar real estate, but the month before has some pretty big celebrations too. These are just some of the most exciting, colourful, and culturally vibrant festivals happening around the world this month.

Diwali

Novemberpalooza

November really is a month to celebrate

Where: India and across the world

When: October 29 to November 3, 2024

Known as the festival of lights, Diwali is the five-day Hindu celebration of life and the triumph of good over evil. It begins with Dhanteras – where oil lamps are kept burning throughout the night to invite the Goddess Lakshmi into the home. The second day is Choti Diwali (or small Diwali), marked with earthen lamps aglow and the lit fuses of firecrackers. This day celebrates the victory of Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama over the demon. The third day – the main day of the festival, is Deepawali where prayers are dedicated to Lakshmi and sweets and gifts are shared with loved ones. The next day is Govardhan Puja, dedicated to Lord Krishna, for protecting the villagers on Govardhan Hill from torrential rains. The festival’s last day is Bhai Dooj – a day dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes out for rangoli, colourful art decorations on the floor created using powders and petals; marvel at the diyas (the decorative lights outside homes), and feast on delicious Indian sweets. 01

Dia De Los Muertos

Where: Widely observed across Mexico

When: November 1 and 2, 2024

Also known as Day of the Dead or All Souls Day, Dia De Los Muertos – shares a startling number of similarities with the origins of Halloween (including rough dates, symbology and reverence of the dead). But whilst All Hallow’s Eve has undergone a gradual commercialisation, its Mexican counterpart has retained its authenticity. Until this day it remains a time to honour and remember loved ones who have passed away. It centres around the belief that death is not the end of the journey, rather a continuation. Altars (or ofrendas) are created where the deceased receive their favourite food and drinks, and their graves are often decorated. Family and friends typically mark the occasion with a dinner sharing stories about the deceased. Pan de Muertos, a bread baked at home and covered with sugar, is eaten and loved ones get together to create sugar skulls with colourful designs.

Giant Kite Festival

Where: Guatemala

When: November 1, 2024

One of the best times to visit this Central America country is during the Festival de Barriletas Gigantes, or the Giant Kite Festival. It’s a festival that honours the dead by launching giant kites made from paper, cloth, patches and bamboo frames, up into the wild blue skies. In the past, the kites were used as a way of communication with departed ancestors. Now, the kites are a symbol of peace and compassion for the living, they’re totems for social justice issues ranging from women’s rights to pollution. Visitors attending the festival are mesmerised by the myriad colours, music, dancing and traditional festival foods. During the festival many adherents also head to gravesites to honour their dearly departed with flowers, wreaths, and baskets of festive food.

This colourful, illuminating light festival began in 1982 where it drew in a respectable 250,000 visitors with its collection near the falls. The Winter Festival of Lights transforms what is often unofficially called, the eighth Natural Wonder of the World into a kaleidoscope of twinkling lights, engaging displays and immersive experiences. Visitors of all ages can walk the pathway and enjoy the larger-than-life showpieces, trees wrapped in the intermittent sparkle of LEDs, glowed-up landscapes, an illuminated tunnel and of course – the falls themselves which become a gorgeous moving light display. The wonderful experience is free.

Bon Om Touk

The main spotlight however, it on the Tonle Sap River in Phnom Penh, where a meteorological (monsoon-related) phenomenon causes the river to reverse its course and return to the mighty Mekong River. It leaves behind rich sediments which helps farmers along its shores. American Thanksgiving

Where: United States of America

When: The fourth Thursday of November (Nov 28 in 2024)

There’s much more to Thanksgiving than the overeating of roast turkey and face-cramming of yams. It’s a many layered celebration with harvest festival origins, initiated in the New World by the colonizing European Pilgrims. Today, it’s a call for families to gather from however far they are apart and count their blessings together in respectful communion. Literally – a day of giving thanks. Mainstays of the modern-day rites and rituals include big retail sales, the watching of sports games, and Thanksgiving parades. The annual Macy’s event in New York is probably the best known and most warmly-adored of all the Thanksgiving Day Parades and involves elaborate floats, theatrical Broadway performances and massive character balloons. Beyond the more material celebrations, many Americans choose to volunteer at homeless shelters and give back to the community.

Bab Al

Nojoum, Bateen Liwa

Desert glamping gets a luxe upgrade…

Load up the car with your weekend bag and buckle up to hit miles of highway, because close to three hours away from urban living lies Bab Al Nojoum, Bateen Liwa. The popular escapist hospitality brand, whose collection of awe-striking overwater villas in Hudayriyat, glamping options in Mugheirah, and in Liwa, a collection of 55 almost under-the-radar villas tucked away under the stars, never fails to impress.

VILLA

We’re booked into a one-bedroom villa, which is spacious inside and out. On the other side of floor-to-ceiling windows lies a temperature-controlled plunge pool, in which you can either cool off with a plunge under the stars or get in some fitness work as you’re enveloped with views of red dunes. The tranquility is unmatched, and you can hear the breeze in fleeting moments that reminds you of how far out you really are.

The living room is cosy, compact and well-equipped, with hand-sewn wall art celebrating the region’s heritage. There are jumbo screens in both the living room and bedroom, if your version of a staycation

is bingeing on Hollywood’s finest action flicks or laugh-out-loud sitcoms. Your standard Nespresso machine, a mini fridge, a nifty selection of healthy teas from Dilmah and coffee pods line the kitchenette counter, and something that caught our eye was the Ma Hawa bottles of drinking water – claiming to be “pure water from air”.

In the bedroom, a welcome addition we rarely otherwise see is a wireless charger on your nightstand. When you’re ready to jump in the shower and get refreshed and ready, you can enjoy skincare products from Just Herbs.

FOOD AND DRINK

Their chief eat, 28 Degrees, does a lavish a la carte breakfast as well the chefs’ daily set menus with international and Arabic cuisines served. Why 28 Degrees? Because it’s “the perfect temperature for a soiree, and the perfect balance designed to inspire all things outdoors”.

If it’s in-room dining you prefer, there’s an impressive selection of eats available just a QR code away on the home screen of your television. Breakfast is delivered to

your villa on a golf cart from 6.30am to 10am, and since we’re spending the day in the desert, we’re inclined to order the Arabic breakfast (Dhs90) which includes shakshuka, foul medames, veggies and a selection of fresh breads, including croissants, doughnuts, freshly brewed tea and Arabic coffee. For lunch and dinner, available on their all-day dining menu 11am to 11pm, you can treat yourself to options like the lamb harara soup (Dhs90) or a Bateen Caesar salad (Dhs90), before moving to heavier options such as the grilled tiger prawns with lemon butter sauce (Dhs120) or crispy skin salmon (Dhs80). There’s also the mezze platter (Dhs80), perfect for sharing.

ACTIVITIES

Bab Al Nojoum celebrates the slogan, “love life outside”. When you’re booked for a stay here, you’re also recommended a list of active adventures such as sandboarding and an intense trek through the Liwa dunes at sunset. Other fun activities include volleyball, karaoke nights, sand arts, and communal barbecue dinners.

RATES

A one-bedroom villa starts from Dhs915.
