YOU CAN’T BEAT THIS TIME OF YEAR IN ABU DHABI
Sure, because of the weather. After what feels like forever, we’re finally able to enjoy scenic strolls, breezy beach days, and sundowners without sweltering. The city really feels like it comes alive again, and gorgeous spots like Mamsha Al Saadiyat, Yas Bay Waterfront and Mina Zayed all awaken with the welcome sound of a gentle thrum of people. Alfresco dining, park picnics, desert camping… the list goes on. And as well as all of our favourite outdoor pasttimes, this month also sees the arrival of a new attraction in the capital, the long-awaited Surf Abu Dhabi, bringing with it a chic beach club and relaxed eatery. We take you on a first look on p53.
But it’s not just about the weather. This time of year is so great because there’s a truly diverse events calendar to look forward to. If you’re a sports fan, the final few months of the year mean NBA, UFC and F1. For music lovers, there’s nineties boybands Backstreet Boys and Take That to look forward to this month, then Wireless music festival takes over Etihad Park in November. Then of course, with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December comes the Yasalam After-Race Concerts headlined by Eminem, Maroon 5 and Muse. And the best of the rest includes a familyfriendly Disney on Ice performance, Life of Pi brought to life on stage, and Matt Rife brings his comedy gig to the capital for the first time. Your essential events guide is on p15.

Pick n Icks
This month the What’s On team share the best ways to impress and cause distress with Halloween fancy dress
Alice Holtham-Pargin,
Group Editor
PICK: Family costumes. Some might call them tacky, personally I find them pretty wholesome. The same adoration I have for matching pjs at Christmas infiltrates into matching Halloween fits. I draw the line at Easter, though.
ICK: Something too niche. Get creative, but if you’re coming dressed as an extra from a horror film released 40 years ago that no-one remembers, you’re better off staying at home.
Aarti Saundalkar,
Online Reporter
PICK: I prefer when costumes go down the traditional scary routeghosts, zombies, ghouls etc etc. And no you can’t just take the outfit you were going to wear, add some makeup and say “I’m Zombie Taylor Swift’.
ICK: When I see someone dressed up disrespectfully –poking fun at a profession, belief or body type for example, just a major ick. It’s lazy, it’s rude, you can do better.
Tamara Wright, Online Reporter
PICK: Maybe it’s my age, but I love Halloween costumes that show off a clever pun, like ‘Holy Cow’ or ‘Cereal Killer’ — simple and funny. I’d much rather be remembered as the cow or giant avocado, but absolutely zero judgement to those who prefer to rock their lingerie.
ICK: My ick is faceconcealing mascot costumes, no matter the time of year. It doesn’t even have to be a scary one —a fairytale princess with that blank, expressionless face creeps me out, especially when you have no idea who’s inside.
Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor
PICK: Dressing up as characters you can do a passable impression of. I love watching people immerse themselves in their role. If you’re dressed as a pirate – go full Captain Jack. Come as Lara Croft? You need to shimmy across at least one piece of guttering before the end of the night.
ICK: Months-old memes. The internet has shaved down the operational half-life of zeitgeist. So when your dad starts using the phrase ‘very demure’, and the gifs of Australian breakdancers hit the WhatsApp group, it might be time to rethink your Halloween choices.
Shelby Gee,
Junior Reporter
PICK: I love Halloween TV specials, so any costume in real life that pays homage to a costume in a tv show is my type of meta. Take Shelby from New Girl, she wore a queen cloak, covered in fluffy cat and dog toys, paired with a scepter and a crown. Her costume? “Reigning (raining) cats and dogs” and I think like all Shelbys – she is a genius.
ICK: No effort costumes. If you’re going to do a Halloween costume, please do it properly. Drawing on cat whiskers and a nose with eyeliner, does not a cat costume make. That’s all.
Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor
PICK: Costumes of famous horror movie characters like Ghostface, The Mummy or Pennywise.
ICK: Spending a ton on a Halloween costume. To me, it’s about getting creative and having fun – and chances are you’ll never wear it again. There are so many ways to enjoy the Halloween spirit without burning a hole in your pocket.
Manaal Fatimah, Junior Reporter
PICK: I’m pretty average at themed make-up but some of the Halloween-ers out there show up with some incredible, transformative art on their faces, and I can fully appreciate their prowess. Teach me your ways.
ICK: Call me a hater and maybe I’m miserable, but matching couples’ costumes take the cake for Halloween cringe. Fred and Daphne are cute; male cat and female cat are not.

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Roxie Nafousi
This month, we chat to Roxie Nafousi (@roxienafousi), self-development coach, inspirational speaker, and author of MANIFEST: 7 Steps to Living Your Best Life. Ahead of her show in Dubai, and after visiting her parents here for the last 16 years, she shares her top spots that you need on your radar.
It is really hard to choose but Four Seasons Resort is probably one of my favourites. I love the pool, beach, and family vibe to it, but it’s also got a gorgeous spa and lots of amazing restaurants too (I love when you can go straight from dinner to bed!) @fsdubai
Matcha Club. I’m obsessed with the cafe there, I actually started writing my MANIFEST for Kids book there. Plus, I have a new obsession with padel and I love yoga, so I could literally stay there all day. @matchadxb
The Guild! The decor, the open kitchen, the music and the food are all 10/10. The team are just incredible, and the gold chocolate dessert is a must have.
@theguilddubai
There’s a gorgeous cafe my sister, Noona introduced me to called La Nena. It’s so calming, and I love the earthy and neutral interiors. @lanenacoffee
My parents live Downtown and we have a beautiful view of the Burj Khalifa from the balcony. So, first thing in the morning I make my coffee, sit with my mum and enjoy the warm air of Dubai and look at the incredible building and I feel so at peace and full of gratitude.
We’ve always welcomed October at What’s On. Traditionally our outdoor issue marks the return of the winter weather, and with it, the residents and visitors flocking back to the UAE’s burgeoning array of outdoor attractions, beachfront restaurants and lofty rooftop bars.
But it’s not just about those old-but-gold alfresco favourites. After a summer spent hard at work on new offerings to keep us all boredom-busting in the great outdoors, the emirates’ hospitality, leisure and events heavyweights unveil the fruits of their labour, inviting us to discover what’s new and exciting. In October 2017, that included camel treks and hot air balloon rides, new brunches at treasured favourites like Blue Marlin and 360, and concerts from Stormzy, Gorillaz and Toni Braxton.
That issue also featured a piece on another major open-air musical event – What’s On Party in the Park, which would return for its third edition that November. Alongside The Chemical Brothers, one half of newly reformed Oasis, Liam Gallagher, headlined in 2017 and saw a chorus of 8,000-strong fans singing along to Wonderwall at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre the following month. With Oasis back in action and announcing a 2025 UK tour, could a UAE date be on the cards next year? We hope so.
Fast forward to 2024, and we’re in for another exciting few months of fun in the sun. In Abu Dhabi, that means heading to new alfresco spots at Hudayriyat Island with the long-awaited arrival of Surf Abu Dhabi, which you can find out more about on p53. And in the world of entertainment, the capital’s roster of events features alfresco festivals like the Michelin Guide Food Festival and Wireless, as well as huge outdoor gigs from Take That, Eminem, and Maroon 5. Discover our complete entertainment guide to this season from p15.

WHAT: AFTERLIFE FESTIVAL
WHERE: YAS GATEWAY PARK WHEN: DECEMBER 6

Known for its iconic visual displays, thumping performances and cutting-edge sound, the festival is extremely popular with techno fans. WHAT: WORLD TENNIS LEAGUE
WHERE: ETIHAD ARENA

If last year was anything to go by, the musical performances following four days of ace action on court at the Etihad Arena will certainly be something to tune in for. Taking place during the tennis off season, the World Tennis League is planned around the Christmas break and will see some of the top names in world tennis battle it league style, in a round robin format, except this is an exhibition in more ways than one. With tonnes of fun to be had on court, there’s also a thrilling line up of concerts planned for after the games, and last year, we heard from crooners Akon and Ne-Yo, as well as hiphop Hercules, 50 Cent. This time, the line up is just as fun
Kicking things off on December 19 will be rock legend Bryan Adams, who will be bringing more than just his first real six-string to the Etihad Arena. The Canadian singer-songwriter will be belting out a timeless list of hits such as Summer of 69, Heat of the Night, and more. This December, We’re going to Run To You, Bryan Adams…
Following things up will be Anastacia, as part of a starry line-up of performers descending on the capital for season three of the World Tennis League. The Chicago native is expected to wow fans with hit singles such as I’m Outta Love and Sick and Tired

The hit singer is known for chartbusters such as Smack That, Lonely, Locked Up and Beautiful, and never fails to get fans on their feet and singing along to his superhits.
At the time of writing, a fourth and final star performer is yet to be confirmed for December 22, but it’s anyone’s guess. There are rumblings on the circuit that it could be a massive name in the hip-hop game, so stay tuned on whatson.ae for the latest.

Underrated venues in the capital, according to UAE residents
Kopitiam by Chandy’s
Café 302
Mina’s Fish Market
Emirates Bio Farm
Glamping at Bab Al Nojoum
With the frenzied spate of openings in Abu Dhabi each year, it’s very easy to forget or overlook the multitude of great venues that get swept off to the side. Fear not: with some help from our readers, we’re shining a spotlight on some fine, under-the-radar spots that whip up great food and good times, but don’t always get the loudest buzz. From glamping hubs to Malaysian cuisine specialists, it’s time to serve these 12 unsung venues some love…
CRAFT by Side Hustle
“My new Abu Dhabi gem is CRAFT by Side Hustle. Whether you’re a firsttime explorer of craft ales or a seasoned enthusiast with a palate finely tuned to aggressive hops, Craft by Side Hustle has something for everyone. But it’s not just about the beer – though the 29 taps pouring everything from a tropical IPA to a mangotinged double IPA and a hazy Belgian Witbier are a revelation in themselves. It’s about the experience. Mitch Dougherty, the maestro behind the small batch brews, brings a passion for brewing that’s earned him accolades from the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival. His creations are fantastic.”
(Roger Sami, resident of Saadiyat Island)
Kopitiam by Chandy’s
“Kopitiam is this relatively new little Malaysian restaurant on Al Falah Street. It’s run by Chandy and his team with such genuine passion and warmth. It’s clear they want everyone who walks through the door to have a great time. The food is fantastic and reminds me of home: fresh, flavourful, and very reasonably priced. The menu might be small, but it’s packed with delicious options, and the blackboard specials are always worth checking out.” (Nancy Chua, resident of Reem Island)
Amongst Few
“If you’re looking for a hidden gem, Amongst Few in Mina Port is where you should go. It’s got this really cool, raw vibe with a mix of cement, steel, and teak that makes the place stand out. The regular speciality coffee is excellent, but what really makes it special is their limitededition brews. Each month, they feature exclusive coffee from some of the best roasteries around the world, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. It’s a great spot for both amazing coffee and a unique atmosphere.”
(Ashley Derbyshire, resident of Reem Island)
Glamping at Bab Al Nojoum, Hudayriyat
“Bab Al Nojoum has quickly become my favourite spot in Abu Dhabi. It’s this perfect mix of eco-friendly design and top-notch comfort. You’ve got a private beach with gorgeous sand and calm waters – ideal for just kicking back. Whether you go for a cosy wagon, a basic tent, or a private pool villa, each spot lets you feel like you’ve escaped the city. If you’re new to camping, it’s a great place to start. It’s got that outdoor charm but with all the modern perks you could want.” (Serene Ghandour, resident of Khalifa City)
Café 302
Mazaraa Café
“Mazaraa Cafe flies under the radar, and for me, it’s all the better because of that. It’s this fantastic spot that combines a café with a farm shop. The shelves are stocked with seasonal produce that’s grown right there on-site, plus organic oil and honey from around the UAE. What makes it even more special is that you can actually pick your own produce and get involved in farm activities like feeding the animals, fishing, and even taking a camel ride. Afterwards, you can relax with some freshly brewed coffee and delicious pastries in their cosy, farmhouse-style café.” (Leen Latouf, resident of Khalifa City)
“Cafe 302 is a charming little café and breakfast spot in the city, housed within Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a nice breakfast spread, or just have a quick coffee catchup, it’s ideal. Attentive, friendly staff are always buzzing around the place to ensure your orders come through in a jiffy. It’s on Saeed bin Ahmed Al Otaiba Street and if you’re sipping on a cuppa Joe by yourself, it’s also the ideal spot for a laid-back session of people-watching.” (Dinesh Ramanathan, resident of Al Zahiyah)
Mina’s Fish Market
“Mina’s Fish Market has always held a special place in my heart. It’s by far the most affordable spot in the city to get fresh fish, and it’s such a vibrant place to visit. The market has been around since 1972 and it’s fascinating to see how hundreds of traders come together every day to haggle and chat. I head over there early in the morning, around 8am to pick up some fresh fish for dinner. And just across the street, the Al Mina Fruit and Vegetable Souk sells fresh produce.” (Nita Manganip, resident of Al Hidd)
Vansha Ghar
“No one really talks about how great Vansha Ghar in Al Markaziah is. It’s a no-frills Nepalese spot that’s all about amazing food. Their menu has an entire page dedicated to momos, and honestly, they’re the best I’ve had in Abu Dhabi. Whether you go for steamed, fried, tandoori style, or sizzling platter, the momos are always spot-on. It’s one of those places where the food speaks for itself.” (Serene Ghandour, resident of Khalifa City)
Falafel Sultan
“I always tell people to check out Falafel Sultan. It’s a local favourite for a reason – everyone goes here for their take-away falafel. What I love is their cheese-stuffed falafel; it’s a unique twist that’s super tasty. Plus, their shawarma comes with a special sauce. Don’t ask me what’s in it, but it really makes it stand out.” (Ashley Derbyshire, resident of Reem Island)
Almayass
“If you’re up for a bit of a splurge and want an amazing Middle Eastern experience, Almayass at The Galleria Al Maryah Island is my top pick. It’s got this old-school charm and gorgeous views of the water. The LebaneseArmenian fusion food is fantastic, especially the mezze. Their hummus with pine nuts, garlicky batata harra, and grilled halloumi are all standout dishes.” (Roger Sami, resident of Saadiyat Island)
Emirates Bio Farm
Ushna
“Ushna has been a go-to for my family and I for over a decade now. It’s easily one of our favourite Indian spots in Abu Dhabi, and it’s even better if you can snag a table on their cozy, stone-lined terrace. Trust me, the views are amazing – watching the Abu Dhabi creek and the Grand Mosque while enjoying their fantastic curries is an experience like no other. The place has this really welcoming vibe, and the food is consistently delicious. We always make sure to book in advance so we can get the best spot.” (Shamoli Chakraborty, resident of Khalifa City)
“Emirates Bio Farm has totally become my hidden gem in Abu Dhabi. It feels like you’re a world away from the desert. Spending a day picking fruits and veggies right from the source is a fantastic way to reconnect with where your food actually comes from. Great if you have kids. Plus, the farm tour is a blast – riding around on a tractor while soaking in the green surroundings is a great way to spend a sunny day. It’s like a little slice of green paradise right here in Abu Dhabi.” (Allie McDermott, resident of Abu Dhabi)

If you’re a regular reader of What’s On, you’ll have followed our crawls of the capital’s finest pubs and bars. In addition to all the bevy-backed indulgence, Abu Dhabi’s time-renowned watering holes also serve up greasy and tasteful eats that pair beautifully with your drinks on a night out. While fries, onion rings and wings will always rank high, the bars and pubs in Abu Dhabi like to do things with a twist. Here are our picks this month:

The spicy tuna taco is the ideal taco, and you don’t have to worry about things getting messy as they’re packed neatly. BROADWAY
Go for the: Broadway Sliders, (Dhs95)
If a restaurant is supposed to transport you somewhere, then Broadway is a hop, skip and an Emirates Palace taxi ride to New York City. Think blinding lights, yellow Ford taxi cabs, hot copies of the Wall Street Journal and for fans of caped crusaders, Gotham City. Broadway arrived at the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental only a year ago, and what immediately grabbed our attention was a beautiful selection of handy bar snacks and refreshing beverages. We were quick to order the Broadway Sliders (Dhs95), which are presented as a trio of toasted buns, each filled with crispy chicken, fish fingers and aged beef. Our favourite is undoubtedly the crispy chicken, but all three go down well. We’re positive you will love this one, and if you’re still hungry, get the blooming onion (Dhs50), a greasy, crunchy hit, served with classic barbecue sauce.
Broadway, Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, West Corniche Road, Abu Dhabi, Sun to Fri 3pm to 1am, Sat 12.30pm to 1am.
Tel: (0)2 690 7999. @broadway.uae

SATURDAY
BRUNCH
AT LA PATRONA
Authentic flavours shine at this high-value brunch…
INTRO
In Al Danah, La Patrona now rolls out a flavoursome new Saturday brunch that serves up all the Mexican fare you came for. The restaurant is an authentic, Mexicanfamily-owned business, and the brunch is all yours with unlimited food and house beverages, for as little as Dhs99.
AMBIANCE
The interiors are simple, yet tell a story. This is a laid-back, eatery-style restaurant, where wooden furniture and Jarrito bottles recycled as flower vases give you a very relaxed feel. Staff members are dressed as traditional taqueros, or taco sellers. You’ll recognise their trophy cases from your last outing at IKEA, and yet, colour-splashed murals showcasing Mexican icons like the feathered serpent, sombrero-shaped lights and little Mexican ornaments strike the difficult balance between being a familyowned business and a competitive option on Abu Dhabi’s dining circuit.
FOOD
This is Mexico in the heart of Abu Dhabi,
and you’ll spot it all: guacamole, salsa, jalapeños, onions, the works. While La Patrona is popular with its patrons for its Friday Fiesta and Taco Tuesday themes, we’re excited about their all-you-can-eat spread this Saturday, and we dive right in. While their menu is obviously taco heavy, they pack in a lot of the traditional Mexican delights as well. Craving a classic quesadilla? You’ll find it. Need a trio of birria cheese balls to begin your meal? No probem at all. But the urban Mexican food that they serve must be enjoyed via the Los Acapulco tacos, or even the Al Pastor tacos, with sliced chicken, cilantro, salsa and even pineapple as an optional topping. If you’re feeling adventurous, definitely give the Los Frijoles Refritos a try, because this spin on chips with guac is served with a delectable bowl of refried beans.
We’re recommended the rib eye and chicken pastor tacos for brunch, and our meat free diners aren’t disappointed either, as vegan variants with jackfruit and bean preparations don’t fail to impress. For seafood lovers, there’s the baja shrimp kind, with refriend beans and melted cheese.
Between handfuls of tacos and sips of beverages, you’ll spot, smell and taste it all – lime, avocado, chopped tomato and onions, jalapenos, a dash of lemon juice, a tinge of spice. Your meal is complemented by a selection of refreshing beverages, including a great pick of mocktails and traditional Mexican sips such as the horchata, with rice, cinnamon and milk. Looking to keep it simple? Pop open a bottle of Jarritos – while we love the tropical punch and mango flavours, you’ll also have the lime, strawberry and guava ones to choose from as you forget about the sun beating down on you outdoors.
La Patrona, Yasat Tower, Al Danah, Abu Dhabi, Saturdays, noon to 6pm, Dhs99.

This month, we keep dining real at La Patrona. So do they.

FOUR NEW RESTAURANTS TO GET EXCITED FOR IN THE CAPITAL RIGHT NOW
Brooklyn Chop House and Pappas at W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island
By the end of the year, W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island will see the arrival of Brooklyn Chop House, which serves up steakhouse classics and Asian dishes; and Pappas, a lively Greek restaurant that pairs authentic fare with sparkler shows and lively music. When it opens, Brooklyn Chop House will serve up its signature favourites that have made the brand famous in New York: dim sum and dry aged chops. The duo of locations in NYC are also known for cocktail trees, gourmet burgers, and supersized plates of noodles, all of which we hope we’ll find on the Abu Dhabi menu. At Pappas, Abu Dhabi diners can look forward to living in their very own version of Mamma Mia, with a menu of traditional Greek eats paired with live music and entertainment.

SHVILI, THE GALLERIA AL MARYAH ISLAND
Georgian specialities have arrived in the capital...
INTRODUCTION
The flavours of Georgia have made their way to Abu Dhabi, with native specials, fusions, modern twists and more. But first, let’s take you through the look and feel.
AMBIANCE
Shvili’s Abu Dhabi iteration takes shape in a corner of The Galleria
Al Maryah Island’s food court on the third level. It is a stand-alone, independent, culinary addition to the capital’s gastronomy sphere, and with a spacious theatrical kitchen, well-stocked mocktail bar, and a nicely done terrace overlooking Al Maryah Island with renowned business
quarters on either side of the street, the outdoor area will be a space to savour in the cooler months. Take your time walking around Shvili, admiring the Georgian colours and wall art.
Georgia is just over three hours’ flight from the UAE, and over the past decade, has become a popular travel destination. Anyone that’s been will confirm they’ve tried, and know of, the khachapuri adjarian (Dhs65), a high-carb, cheesy, bread speciality with a wobbling egg yolk adding sort of a cherry-on-top effect. Mimicking the regional favourite, vine leaves, are their eggplant rolls stuffed with nuts (Dhs47), less sour on the palate than the former and a hearty accompaniment to your meal. If you’re the type to dip and
dab, while the cuisine isn’t huge on sauces, they do have their pastes. Akin to the baba ganoush is their hummus with eggplant (Dhs45), a new addition to their roster of eats. Another side we’re particularly fond of is the mama khinkali – dumplings, dim sum, momos – whatever form you’ve consumed them in prior, you’ll know what to expect, and with a tender meat filling, these little steamed wonders are a great way to get started at Dhs150 for 10 mini portions. We recommend sharing.
When we’re ready to tackle the mains, the shashlik rack of lamb is served (Dhs105) with numerous cubes of grilled meat, ready to be devoured. Shashlik has been served and enjoyed in the Caucasus region for over 200 years with marinade and flavours, and fares well on Shvili’s menu.
For the gastronomy enthusiast who is always on the hunt for new cuisines, eats and flavours, Shvili, with a prior outpost in Dubai, checks all the boxes. It is unfussy, casual, and boosts Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene nicely, and housed inside a space like The Galleria Al Maryah Island, has to be one of the more affordable, yet enjoyable options.
Shvili, Level 3, The Galleria Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi, Sun to Thurs 10am to 10pm, Fri and Sat 10am to midnight.
@shvili_dxb
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Abu Dhabi is perennially hungry for new global cuisines, and Shvili does not disappoint.

REVIEW:
CAFÉ JAMES, AL QANA
This classy café has a new address in the capital
One of the UAE capital’s favourite cafes has a new zip code at the picturesque Al Qana Marina. Following the success of its Al Qana popup and with a successful branch in Boutik Mall on Al Reem Island, it’s brought a menu of famed French fare, delightful dessert picks and innovative, taste-packed beverages to the many hungry diners and legions of fans that refined café concepts have earned in Abu Dhabi.
Located just by the pedestrian bridge, Michelin Guide-select James blends in beautifully with Al Qana’s smooth white, minimalistic design. Its floor to ceiling windows overlook the gorgeous Al Qana Creek and numerous yachts, and we spot several What’s On award-winning concepts on either side as we arrive at the café. A cool, curved coffee bar is the first things you spot as you enter.
Café James rolls out a fresh new menu, showcasing French-inspired flavours that feature in classic creations with an innovative twist. Whether it is freshly baked scones, croissants, bagu with anettes or elegantly presented desserts, it’s all here. Our culinary journey begins with the peanut butter latte (Dhs32), elegantly presented in a little house-shaped, transparent mug. The beverage is served with a dollop of peanut butter that you push into the drink, making for a wonderful, indulgent blend of peanut butter and coffee. Easing our way into the dining journey, we then get the quinoa and kale salad (Dhs65), that’s portioned well for two diners. With tricolour quinoa, kale, nuts, avocado and apple, this is light, healthful and you taste a little of each with every bite. You can also add grilled chicken for Dhs30, or grilled salmon for Dhs55.
either as a main, or on its own. While it isn’t seasoned as much as you might expect, with tenderloin steak slices and fries served in a Vienna baguette you’ll need to enjoy it with the café de Paris sauce served on the side.
All said and done, make sure you leave enough room for the star of the show, their pecan nut cookie. With a croissant, bits of cookie and showy pecan praline dome making way for vanilla ice cream at the centre of it all, you’ll realise Café James is centred on its pick of great desserts.
You won’t smell coffee beans when you pull the doors to Café James open, because it isn’t a café, it’s a full fledged restaurant presented in a neat, minimalistic avatar.
Enjoy.

IT’S GOGH TIME
A Dutch masterpiece comes to the capital
Louvre Abu Dhabi is home to over 600 masterpieces and this October, fans of Vincent Van Gogh are in for a special treat. One of the Dutch artist’s most popular paintings is joining the museum’s already impressive roster of permanent fixtures, and is bound to have art lovers screaming ‘Let’s Goooogh!’
The painting in the spotlight from Van Gogh’s massive creation is Bedroom in Arles. The artist painted three different versions of this masterpiece during his short life, and this one, on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, is the smallest of the three.
The painting was a gift for his family in Holland, recreated a year after the original version. Van Gogh painted his bedroom

to give his brother Theo an idea of his new home, and in a letter, explained that he wanted to show the simplicity of his bedroom using colours. Though now faded, he penned, “the pale, lilac walls, the uneven, faded red of the floor, the chrome-yellow chairs and bed, the pillows and sheet in very pale lime-green, the blood-red blanket, the orange-coloured washstand, the blue wash basin, and the green window. I wanted to express absolute repose with these different colours.”

in Spain. It was carved in 968CE and is one of the best surviving examples of the royal ivory carving tradition in Al-Andalus (Islamic Spain).
To art lovers today, it offers a view of his simple, domestic life in the ‘Yellow House’. It offers us a view of the space where he created some of his most wonderful masterpieces, and little did the painter know at the time that this artwork would become the most famous bedroom in art history.

CULTURE // MOVIES FILMED IN THE UAE
Words: Miles Buckeridge
The combination of futuristic cityscapes, wild otherworldly desert expanses and a talented pool of filmmaking professionals living right here – it’s no wonder the UAE plays the starring role in the staging of so many big-screen stories. These are just some of the most famous examples of the UAE providing backdrops and stealing scenes.
MAKING A SCENE
11 movies filmed right here in the UAE...
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
2This sequel to the hugely popular 2001 movie starring Will Smith, didn’t hit quite as well with the critics, but it is absolutely watchable if you let yourself embrace the fun of it all. As you might expect from a film that puts humanity on the brink of annihilation, there’s not a lot of happy imagery for planet Earth – Dubai’s big moment comes in the form of the Burj Khalifa being up-ended and used to shish kebab a section of London’s South Bank. Those aliens really did us dirty.
Gran Turismo (2023)
1
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023)
This seventh Mission: Impossible movie marks the third time the all-thrill-no-fill Tom Cruise vehicle has rolled into the UAE, and it’s an Abu Dhabi double dip. There are the scenes shot inside (and, slight spoiler, Tom Cruise doing his fave cardio on top of) the stunning new Terminal A complex in Zayed International Airport, where the IMF team are trying to intercept the key to a terrifying advanced AI entity. Then there are the Rub’ al Khali ambush sequences where Ethan Hunt (Cruise) provides an extraction service for rogue agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson).
This isn’t a movie adaptation of the popular Sony game. The game doesn’t have a plotline and whilst you may argue that might have improved the Assassin’s Creed movie, we wouldn’t dare comment. It’s the story of how the Gran Turismo videogame changed a young man’s fortunes. This is the miraculous real-life tale of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe). Jann was an elite gamer, a Gran Turismo grandmaster who was recruited into a racing academy on a marketing exec’s (Orlando Bloom) gut intuition that good gamers might make good drivers. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp and the cast list includes Madekwe, Bloom, David Harbour, and Josha Stradowski. One of the movie’s key scenes is filmed right here in the Dubai Autodrome, faithfully retelling a turning point in Mardenborough’s career.
Dune (2020) and Dune 2 (2024)
The Dune series is director Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of the classic Frank Herbert science fiction novel of the same name. This time around, the cast is headed up by Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jason Momoa. The story follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a young man thrust into a power struggle on a distant planet, where two houses battle for control of the galaxy’s most precious resource, a ‘spice’ called Melange. The main location for the action is the desert planet of Arrakis played, rather nobly by Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter. The third installment of the story is scheduled to hit screens late in 2026.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
When the location scouts were searching for a futuristic cityscape to set the third installment of this sci-fi reboot saga, Dubai must have stuck out immediately. Its Tomorrowland architecture, fast cars, smart city credentials and Metro stations that look straight outta 3020 make it the perfect candidate for offering a glimpse of what’s to come. So much so, that while many of the scenes were digitally enhanced, we recognised countless locations. JLT, DIFC and the Burj Khalifa all star alongside the cast’s own big names, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Anton Yelchin.
4
Mission: Impossible –Ghost Protocol (2011)
Five out of five sweaty palms for the stunts in this, the fourth Mission Impossible movie. The MI gang are in Dubai to intercept the sale of some launch codes and prevent nuclear war, culminating in an incredible free-climbing Burj Khalia scene that more than makes up for the sprinkling of artistic license used in the film’s geography of Dubai. We’re specifically referring to Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) running (quel suprise) directly out of DIFC and into some unspecified Old Dubai souk, without a single abra ride in between.
Furious
7 (2015)
Love them or hate them, Fast and Furious movies are a big deal at the box office. And the seventh installment of the franchise, Furious 7, takes some of its road rage out on the cinematic streets of our capital. In one of the more physics-defying scenes from a series known for playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) take a Lykan Hypersport car and jump between Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Twice. This movie was sadly Paul Walker’s last, as he tragically passed away during filming. Impressive CGI rendering was used to fill in his final scenes to make for an emotional farewell.
8
6 Underground (2019)
There’s some pretty simple box-office arithmetic that goes into putting Michael Bay and Ryan Reynolds together. You know you’re going to get epic cinematography backed up by frantic action scenes and sassy dialogue, delivered with trademark Reynolds panache, which neatly sums up this particular high energy, super fun Netflix movie. And a lot of it was filmed right here in Abu Dhabi.
Mission: Impossible
–
Fallout
(2018) OK, forgive us, this is a bit of a cop-out. Despite the movie racking up more destinations than a gap-year student with a trust fund, there’s only one scene filmed here in the UAE. And they used CGI to make it look like Paris. It’s during Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) ill-fated lightning-besieged HALO (high altitude, low opening) parachute jump. As an interesting bit of film trivia for you, it took Cruise 106 jumps to get those precious few moments of screen time.
9
Syriana (2005)
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
We always knew the force was strong with Abu Dhabi, but did you know the planet of Jakku – where we first meet Rey (Daisy Ridley), the central protagonist of the Skywalker Star Wars Trilogy – is actually Abu Dhabi? Or at least that’s where those scenes were filmed. Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises of all time, so having your location immortalised as part of the saga is a pretty big deal. Abu Dhabi actually gets a name check in the movie too, during a conversation with companion Finn (John Boyega), Rey refers to a location called ‘Liwa Outpost’. A kestral run we can plug into our sat nav, and make in less than 12 parsecs.
11This multi-layered, fractallytold political thriller was the first big Hollywood production to formally shoot in Dubai. And whilst the external scenes shot here provide the backdrop for a fictional Middle Eastern state (and given the subject matter, that’s a good thing) – we can still spot some unmistakable Dubai locations in the finished product. Syriana, written and directed by Stephen Gaghan, has an outstanding cast lead by George Clooney, Matt Damon, Jeffrey Wright, William Hurt, and Christopher Plummer and tells the story of a jilted US oil firm trying to balance its books with some shady dealings. Thoroughly worth a watch.

IN CONVERSATION WITH
Matt Rife
From TikTok virality to Netflix specials…
Ahead of his first Middle Eastern gig in Abu Dhabi on Sunday October 27, What’s On got some screen time with Matt Rife. The TikTok comedy sensation, who has on multiple occasions talked about his apprehension to post his comedy on social media, may have social media to thank for his fame. But in conversation, he explains how more powers came together to contribute to his rise…
“Netflix legitimised me,” he explains. It’s a dream come true and is really a stamp of validation to be able to have my own comedy specials. Netflix has really taken over that comedy space,” he says. “Before it used to be Comedy Central and now everybody wants their own Netflix special, and I’m lucky enough to have two of my own.”
When we ask him about his pretty privilege, the comedian reiterates that he isn’t just a pretty face. “There are positives and negatives to have it. If I admit to it, I’m conceited and if I don’t address it then I’m faking being humble. But I am just as insecure as everybody else.”
Rife has featured in quite the list of TV shows and films. But his latest venture is a Netflix series now in the works. “I’m not allowed to say too much about it yet, but it’ll be a single camera series on Netflix that will be different from anything I’ve done before, and it’ll be nice to step into that acting space again and show people a different side of me.”
When asked about how his debut Middle Eastern performance might differ from other gigs, his response was typical of his persona. “The climate here has changed a lot, and when my friend Andrew Schulz came to perform, he told me how incredible the show was and so I’m really looking forward to seeing how things go,” he flashes us a smile. “I’d say I’m innocently naïve, or maybe ignorant, so I’m hopeful things will run smoothly.”
As a comedian, of course, the expectation mounts on one to always be funny, especially given his spontaneous crowd work prowess. But how do you react if a joke doesn’t go as planned?
“Being on stage is super fulfilling and I love it, especially when that joke lands,” he says. “Occasionally crowd work doesn’t land but you just have to use your brain and think of doing something funny.”
Rife talks animatedly about his comedic influences and industry icons, recalling a particular moment where his own comedy icon, Dave Chapelle. A photograph taken during one of his gigs in Ohio captured Chapelle laughing up a storm while Rife is on stage. Is the photo framed? Not yet, Rife tells us, but it’ll soon take pride of place on his wall at home. He also recently met another one of his idols, while on tour in the UK, Ricky Gervais, who was according to Matt, “One of the nicest guys [I’ve ever met]. I was expecting him to be like ‘I don’t care to meet a comedian who got famous on the internet’ but he was so, so lovely.”
Before his show in Abu Dhabi, you might be able to catch the comic around the city as he plans to spend a few days exploring the capital before his show. It will be his first return to the UAE since 2021, when he came for a film shoot.

SETTING INTENTIONS
There’s 100 days (or thereabouts) left until 2025. Don’t wait until the New Year to make resolutions – get your head in the game today. We asked leadership and growth coach, David Singleton, founder of Oraculi (oraculi.co), for his top tips
WO: What are some easy daily habits people can put in place to help achieve their goals?
There’s three things I’d say are a great way to start:
•Organise your day by listing tasks in order of importance and focus on completing them accordingly. Have a ‘to don’t’ list alongside your ‘to do’ list. Don’t be a hero.
•Dedicate time to learning something new related to your goals, whether through reading or listening to a podcast.
•Spend 10 minutes each day reflecting on your goals and the progress you’ve made, keeping a journal is helpful.
What are some of the most popular techniques you use to help people get ahead?
I start by examining the role of the saboteur – what’s holding people back. We understand character strengths and
how can we use these to counter the role of the saboteur. Part of the process is also a deep dive into the motivational mind to understand one’s mindset at the time to enable us to build powerful goals.
What’s one question you ask all of your clients to establish their ambitions?
Think of a time when you were at your peak performance, what was it about that time, who was around you, how did you feel, and what would you like to replicate?
Now think of your goals, what’s holding you back, what shall we take from this time of peak performance? When will you achieve these goals, go there, go into the future and write down your current state; you are thriving and deeply fulfilled, how does it feel, what have you done?
Once we have confronted what’s been holding us back and created an ambitious vision with authentic purpose driven goals, we can write and then bring to life our future memories in the now with a vision statement that influences present actions with an acute awareness of how current actions shape future outcomes.
If you want to worry less and enjoy life more, what are 3 things people can do?
•Regular mindfulness practice, breathwork, ice bathing or meditation can significantly reduce stress and enhance overall wellbeing.
•Exercise, eat, and sleep well. Engage in physical activities you enjoy; it boosts endorphins and helps clear the mind. Eat well to fuel your body, while quality sleep restores both your mental and physical health, making you more resilient and focused. These practices together uplifts your overall well-being, enabling you to handle life’s stresses more effectively and maintain a clearer, more positive mindset.
•Preserve your energy, spend quality time with loved ones and people who bring you happiness and inspiration.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
When I worked between the USA and UK, I asked my coach a similar question, and he said “believe in yourself, and you will win”. It inspired my most commonly used mantra ‘til today: “Be the leader today you want to be tomorrow.” Have confidence and belief in yourself that you can be at the next level you want to be, believe in the ‘power of possible’, understand your limiting beliefs know your limits and embrace your character strengths.
WELCOMING THE GIANTS OF THE GAME
Whether it takes nuggets of brilliance, or just good ol’ luck, titans will clash at the NBA Abu Dhabi Games

While basketball lovers in Abu Dhabi welcomed some absolute behemoths of the game, including LeBron James, Steph Curry and others during the USA Basketball Showcase in July, NBA action returns to the Etihad Arena this month with now 18-time champions, the Boston Celtics, and the Denver Nuggets about to take to the court for two exhilarating basketball games on October 4 and 6.
The NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2024 presented by ADQ will bring some of the best global basketball action to town, after a superb weekend of hooptastic action between the Dallas Mavericks and Minnessota Timberwolves wowed fans last October.
Whether it’s sporting action, top-tier names in music and entertainment, award-winning musicals or laugh-out-loud comedy shows, there’s no denying that one of the main reasons we head to the Etihad Arena every events season is to get in some much-needed stargazing. This time around, you won’t be disappointed with the pre-season games bringing stalwarts of the basketball world to Abu Dhabi.
This year’s preseason contests promise some serious star power. Going over the Celtics’ roster, you can expect five-time NBA All-Star Jayson Tatum, three-time NBA All-Star Jaylen Brown, 2021 NBA champion Jrue Holiday and 2018 NBA All-Star Kristaps Porziņģis. Holiday participated in the inaugural NBA Abu Dhabi Games in 2022 as a member of the
Milwaukee Bucks, and will be back in the UAE capital in green and white, powering the 18-time champs’ quest for a win or two before the season kicks into gear. The Nuggets’ line-up is no slouch either, with two-time Kia NBA MVP and six-time NBA All-Star Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon expected to lace up their pumped-up kicks and get the Abu Dhabi crowd on their feet this month.
But the fun isn’t limited to what happens on the court. Last year, the NBA Abu Dhabi Games included an entire week of exciting programming for fans, including NBA Fan Appreciation Day, which hosted legends of the game such as Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Tim Hardaway Sr, and saw pop superstar Will.I.Am perform for the Abu Dhabi crowd. Manarat Al Saadiyat also hosted NBA District, with several interactive events building the excitement.
Set to bring a sell-out crowd of 16,000 to its feet at the Etihad Arena and airing in over 200 countries around the world, the NBA Abu Dhabi 2024 Games presented by ADQ is all set to thrill you. See you there...

The adrenaline-charged, motorsport-themed adventureland adds a new gaming dimension to the theme park, dressed in a sleek black and red aesthetic, and is set to be the ultimate virtual experience on Abu Dhabi’s own island of thrills, Yas Island.
Why e-sports?
The Ferrari World e-sports arena was introduced with the vision of bringing a new dimension of immersive entertainment to visitors. By blending the safety and technology of virtual racing with the authentic thrill of a real-life Ferrari experience, the space was created as a destination for guests to feel the true power of one of the world’s most celebrated car brands. State-of-the-art gaming stations and

A DIFFERENT SIDE TO TO Barcelona
They may not draw in giant crowds, but these under-the-radar attractions are every bit as intriguing as the big-hitters
Barcelona’s allure extends far beyond its famous landmarks and tourist magnets. While the city’s golden beaches and iconic structures like La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell captivate millions, there’s a treasure trove of alternative attractions waiting to be discovered. For those keen to experience a different side of Barcelona, consider these lesser-known gems that offer a deeper, more authentic taste of the city.
Discover stunning architecture beyond Gaudi
Sure, Antoni Gaudí’s masterpieces, like La Pedrera and the Sagrada Familia, are must-sees. However, Barcelona’s architectural wonders extend beyond the famed Modernist icons. The Torre Agbar, a strikingly colourful and cocoon-shaped skyscraper designed by Louvre Abu Dhabi architect Jean Nouvel, offers a fresh perspective. Its Mirador Torre Glòries (miradortorreglories.com) observation deck provides panoramic views and an interactive artwork called Cloud Cities, adding a unique twist to the classic city skyline experience.
Trade in the city bike tour for a sunrise paddle excursion
Forget the helmet and rusty bike – swap them for a peaceful sunrise stand-up paddle group tour instead. Just a fiveminute walk from Poblenou, you and your crew can catch the stunning sunrise from your boards. Paddleboarding is easy on the cardio and gives you a fresh view of Barcelona from the calm waters. You can book this chill experience via Airbnb Experiences for just Dhs114 per person – a perfect way to start your day.
Explore a less frenzied food market
While La Boqueria is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings, it can be overwhelming. For a more relaxed market experience, head to El Mercat del Ninot (mercatdelninot. com). This recently renovated gem in the Eixample neighbourhood boasts high ceilings and an airy layout that makes shopping and dining a breeze. Stop by La Bikineria for an inventive twist on the classic “bikini” ham and cheese toasted sandwich.
Enjoy rooftop views, not cable cars
Skip the crowded Montjuïc cable car up the mountain and head to one of Barcelona’s chic hotel rooftops for stunning city vistas. The Casa Bonay (casabonay.com) rooftop, with its verdant decor, live music, and vibrant atmosphere, provides a tranquil retreat. Sip on expertly crafted cocktails and take in panoramic views of the city – something that you definitely couldn’t do in a cable car.
Take a free street art tour
While El Raval might not be as polished as some of Barcelona’s other neighbourhoods, it’s a vibrant area known for its street art. Wandering through El Raval, you’ll encounter an array of murals, graffiti, and urban art that reflect the district’s dynamic and multicultural character. Free street art tours (barcelonastreetstyletour.com) are available for those interested in exploring this creative side of the city, providing an immersive experience into Barcelona’s contemporary art scene.
Try top non-touristy tapas
Tapas are a quintessential part of Barcelona’s culinary scene, but many tourist-trap tapas bars serve uninspired fare. For an authentic experience, visit La Bodegueta (labodeguetarambla.com) in Eixample. This time-honoured spot delivers quality, classic tapas such as jamón ibérico and huevos rotos – fried eggs on chips with various toppings. This bar’s commitment to traditional flavours ensures a genuine taste of Barcelona’s rich gastronomic heritage.
WHERE TO STAY
Grand Hyatt Barcelona
Swap the city’s hustle for the serene elegance of Alta
The Grand Hyatt Barcelona, an evolved version of the iconic Princesa Sofia, which first opened its doors in 1975, stands as a fresh update on a cherished city landmark. The hotel, which only had its grand opening in April earlier this year, subtly hints at contemporary elegance, with a design that’s clean and crisp. The standout feature of the property is its inviting pool deck. The narrow aquamarine pool, flanked by towering potted palms, creates a serene retreat perfect for when your feet are tired of exploring. [Note: There are only a handful of sunbeds, so be prepared to hustle in the morning for your spots].
In contrast to the other Grand Hyatt properties in Europe, this Barcelona location distinguishes itself with its innovative design. Wisely, the Hyatt
gave the hotel a stylish spruce-up from the bottom up, introducing a range of new dining experiences, including the fantastic rooftop Peruvian restaurant Maymanta and Leña steakhouse, along with a tapas bar and coffee shop, enhancing the culinary offerings of the hotel.
Inside, the Grand Hyatt Barcelona features 465 meticulously designed guestrooms, each showcasing a sophisticated blend of Art Deco elegance with a hint of sixties flair. While many of Barcelona’s smart hotels are down in the bustle near the sea, the Grand Hyatt Barcelona is in the gently civilised heart of Alta, close to major attractions such as the Monastery of Pedralbes and the Camp Nou football stadium where Barcelona FC plays its home games. Yet, it remains pleasantly distanced from the tourist-heavy areas. An ideal hideaway.
Entry-level room rates start at Dhs1,385 per night. The King Studio Suite (pictured) starts at Dhs2,285 per night.

An estimated 1.3 billion people experience some impairment - that’s around 16 per cent of the global population. And although they’re just as keen to travel and explore the world as any other arbitrarily composed group, they can face limiting barriers from time to time. One region that’s really taking the idea of inclusive travel seriously is the Rhineland-Palatinate state in southeast Germany, just under two hours from Frankfurt.
The Rhineland-Palatinate came into existence after the Second World War – the result of a merger of three historically separate parts of Prussia, Hesse and Bavaria. It is known for its evergreen forests, lush vineyards, quaint villages, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and everyone is sure to find something to love, and we do mean everyone.
Things to do
Say
Hallo to Germany’s oldest city, Trier
Founded in 16 BCE during the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus, Trier is Germany’s oldest city. It’s bursting with layered culture and and is home to several well-preserved Roman structures.
If you have limited time in this stunning city, visit the Cathedral Church of St. Peter – the oldest episcopal brick-built basilica in Germany, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring interiors including a grand baroque ceiling, a stunning ‘swallow’s nest’ organ and other relics. Next to the cathedral is the Church of Our Lady in Trier, also a UNESCO list heritage site, and one of the earliest churches built in French High Gothic style outside of France. Inside, you’ll be immersed in a mystical haze of light from the gorgeous modern stain glass windows around the church. Sadly, the original stain glass windows
were destroyed from World War II. If you have a tour guide with you, ask about the story of the McDonald Peace Windows, and get ready to be impressed.
For museum fans, after your snaps of the Porta Nigra – yet another UNESCO World Heritage site, head to the Museum Simeonstift Trier, which is packed with art and cultural treasures from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. It is divided into sections and you can easily spend two to three hours exploring it. This museum is on the right track to providing a barrier-free experience for all its visitors from elevators to braille, a ‘blind kit’ which contains cross-media materials such as reliefs, models, and audio files, so the visually impaired are able to enjoy the museum. There are also video files with ASL explanations.
A short distance away you’ll find the Palastgarten. The pretty pink palace was the residence of the Archbishops and Electors of Trier from the 16th century until the late 18th century. You aren’t allowed inside as the palace is currently used for governmental purposes, but the exterior and garden outside are worth a visit on their own merit.
From here, turn 180 degrees and it’s a few minutes to the Kaiserthermen (Imperial baths). Inside, navigate a complex of underground passages and make your way to the tower top offering impressive views of the ruins. Due to stairs, and narrow passageways, it can be difficult to navigate with a wheelchair, but you can still soak in the stunning ancient Roman architecture from afar.
Wander through the gorgeous town of Cochem
Another beautiful town worth a spot in your itinerary is Cochem, located between a hill and the Moselle River. Home to just a little over 5,000 residents, this picturesque old town features half-timbered houses and medieval walls.
Sitting high on the rugged cliff watching over the village is Cochem Castle (also known as Reichsburg Cochem, or the Imperial Cochem Castle), one of the largest castles in the Mosel. If you plan on visiting, do note you can only tour the castle and its courtyards with a guided tour. A taxi is recommended to head to the castle for those with limited mobility and the castle is barrier-free up to the entrance, but there are staircases within the castle.
Back in the town, there’s plenty to do, from cruises and walking tours, plus plenty of cafes, restaurants annd shops. The town features cobblestones and some slightly uphill and downhill slopes, which can be manageable for wheelchair users with a little help.
Sip wine at Traben-Trarbach
The wine town of Traben-Trarbach is called the jewel of the Central Mosel. It is home to charming Art Nouveau buildings, which sit alongside a five-kilometre-long river promenade with beautiful views.
Back in 1900, Traben-Trarbach was a frantic hub of viticulture and commerce, home to the second largest wine trading centre in Europe after the French city of Bordeaux. Demand for Riesling wine was great, and in the second half of the 19th century the capacity of the wine cellars increased, with some being built underneath large areas of the town centre. You can book a guided tour to experience these historic wine cellars, which will help you appreciate your next glass of Riesling wine – one of the three most popular white wines in the world.
You can’t leave without tasting a glass, or in the case of the Wine Discovery Tour at Weingut Emil Franz, six. The family-owned winery was founded over a hundred years ago and is guided by the mantra, ‘from the vineyard to the glass’. This interactive session will reveal the craftmanship and passion behind every bottle, but will deepen your appreciation for wine. As you listen to the tales from the lovely couple, you can enjoy light bites.
The Traben-Trarbach Underworld tour has its accessibility certified according to the criteria of the nationwide label Tourism For All weingut-emil-franz.de
Stroll around the Jungferweiher circular trail
On the edge of Ulmen’s village, an accessible circular trail will take you around a maar lake formed from a volcano eruption several thousand years ago. The threekilometre trail runs around the Jungferweiher pond and its nature reserves. As you make your way along the trail, audiovisual content (including ASL videos) can be discovered by scanning QR codes, and the info boards include braille, too. With the help of a guide, the visually impaired can also enjoy an immersive experience and be one with nature.
On the south bank, a centuries-old tunnel connects the Jungferweiher to the Ullmener Maar. The 125-metre tunnel is wheelchair accessible, although narrow at one point (70cm wide). It allows visitors to experience millennia of earth history up close. After soaking in the gorgeous green forest surrounding Ullmener Maar, make your way to the charming town of Ulmen where you can relax with a bite or a drink, or visit St Matthias Church.
Be one with nature at Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park
This national park, roughly 10,000 hectares in size, was created by the German Federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. The park’s motto is ‘let nature be nature’ and the park puts a lot of energy into ensuring developments take place undisturbed by human influences under their own rules and laws. The rangers at the park believe that the park should not only be visited, but experienced and understood with all the senses.
The National Park is home to around 250 million trees spanning 35 species, other plants, mammals, reptiles, birds and insects including different species of butterflies. It’s a hiker’s haven with numerous trails offered, but to ensure the park can be enjoyed by all – including those with limited mobility – there are marked and certified accessible trails (around 1.6km).
In the park, you can fuel up at Cafe Bistro, which is also home to a number of immersive multimedia experiences on the 1st floor of the building, access to which is barrier free. hunsruecktouristik.de
Endless views from the Erbeskopf summit
While you’re in the area, make sure you save time to visit the Windklang viewing platform where you can get some stunning views from the Erbeskopf summitthe highest mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is located in the middle of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. Created by sculptor C. Mancke, the viewing platform of the structure is accessible from the parking lot where wheelchair users have a direct and easy path after which they can enjoy an unobstructed view of the landscape. Assistant dogs are also welcome.
WHERE TO STAY
As a home base for your exploration of the Rhineland-Palatinate, consider the Kucher’s Landhotel in Darscheid. The quaint four-star hotel is just what you need after a day out offering peaceful rooms accessible for wheelchairs. You can relax in your room, or spend a moment soaking in the silence in the garden on the property, or you can go for a stroll around the hotel before the sun sets. Prices start from Dhs350 per night stay in October.
And you would have never guessed it, but nestled in the quiet Darscheid district, foodies can pull up a chair and enjoy a meal at the One Star Michelin fine dining restaurant, Kucher’s Gourmet on the hotel’s ground floor. Diners will get to enjoy one of two set menus, and the dishes steer clear of unwanted frills, with the young chef only focusing on bringing together fresh produce and delicate flavours. You can pair it with a wine glass or two from the restaurant’s extensive 1,700 labels. kucherslandhotel.de
