I GREW UP IN A LOUD HOUSE
Loud in the sense that there was always something going on. Music playing. People coming and going. A visitor we were tidying up for, or an event we were preparing glassware, cutlery, or decorations for. And amongst all that busyness, there were always dogs.
You’re either a cat person or a dog person. I’m definitely a dog person. I watched Cats and Dogs enough times as a child to know which species would have our backs when it really boiled down to it. And I grew up in a family where dogs were always a huge part of our plans – from long weekend walks on the coast where my family spent much of the summer, to pub lunches where we’d sit bundled up in half a dozen layers on an outdoor terrace just so our four-legged friend could come along. So my love for these paw-some canines runs deep and unconditional. And I’m not the only one. In the capital, you can seldom walk a metre of the coastline or through a grassy park without bumping into someone strolling with their four-legged friend. So this issue is for you, your canine companion, and all the paw-some adventures you’re yet to have. From pet-friendly restaurants and terraces that pair lovely views with water bowls and doggy treats, to staycays that welcome four-legged holidaymakers as well as their humans, and spots for scenic walks with your mutt mate, our essential guide to Abu Dhabi’s pet-friendly spots is from p15.
Enjoy the issue,

I’m on the final countdown to my June wedding, and my beautiful Esposa Prive wedding dress landed in Dubai this month. I got to see it for the first time, and it was even better than I remember. I’m not going to talk about what it looks like, but putting on my dress for the first time was such a special moment. @esposaprive

There’s this cool new attraction in the UAE and it’s one you need to visit with the family. Located around an hour away from Dubai, Hanging Gardens in Kalba is home to waterfalls, flower-filled gardens, hiking trails, play areas, dining spots and a train. Surrounded by gorgeous nature and with the current clement weather, you’ll honestly question whether you are still in the UAE.

Dreaming of the cinnamon cruffin from… Milk Bakery and Café
One of our lovely readers recommended Milk at Wasl 51, so I had to look into it. Topped with a torched marshmallow, it was love at first sip. 10s across the board. @milkbakery.ae

Exploring the treasures of… The Meat Avenue
Jumeirah’s Meat Avenue is a genuine Aladdin’s Cave. There’s no genie, but you do have to solve a riddle upon entering, and that’s how you’re gonna get all your shopping home. The Meat Avenue is part restaurant/part deli. The market side of operations is huge, with premium cuts, cured meats, spices, cheeses, hot sauces, honeys, herbs, oils and just a single, oddly out of place, lamp. @themeatavenue

Getting way too excited over my new… Dyson Airstrait
I recently got the Dyson Airstrait to test on my curly hair and find out if it’s worth the money (Dhs1,999). Unlike traditional straighteners, the Airstrait retained some volume and texture, resulting in a ‘naturally straight’ finish. While I remain a firm believer in embracing curly hair, the Dyson Airstrait is definitely worth the investment if you are straightening your hair regularly. @dyson_arabia

Through MY EYES Aida AlBusaidy
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and beloved hidden gems. This month, we chat to Aida AlBusaidy (@aidaalbusaidy), associate VP of consumer advocacy at the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), a mother, speaker, Emcee, and proud Dubai native. Here, she shares some of her favourite spots in the city.
One of my go-to spots is a farmhouse in Lahbab, along the Dubai-Al Ain road. It’s the perfect place to unwind, play some board games, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
A hidden gem in Dubai that I love is Al Bada’a, located between Satwa and Jumeirah 1. It’s a cosy neighbourhood with a real old Dubai feel, just a short bike ride from City Walk. You’ll find locals walking their dogs, small grocery stores selling snacks like Chips Oman with laban, and even unique finds like Vimto popsicles.
One family-friendly spot I love is Kite Beach. It’s perfect for a day out with the kids because of its open space and variety of activities. Another favourite is Global Village, where you can explore different cultures and enjoy entertainment for all ages. @kitebeachdubai @globalvillageuae
One of my go-to cafes in Dubai is Society Dubai on Jumeirah Road. It’s got a cosy, traditional vibe that I love, especially in the morning. It’s my spot for getting work done or just unwinding with a good cup of coffee. @societyuae
I live near Nad Al Sheba 1, which has some great spots like a peaceful pond area and a lovely park. I also enjoy gazing upon the beautiful mosques in the area for some quiet reflection.
There’s this restaurant in JLT that truly wowed me – it’s Franky’s Pizzeria. The experience was so nice that I’d definitely make the drive back just to dine there again. The whole vibe, from the elevator ride up to the meal itself, was genuinely impressive. @frankyspizzeria
It’s hard to believe that back in 1989 we were celebrating one of What’s On’s first big anniversaries, with the brand turning a decade old that year. That same year – as well as putting on fabulous events in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Muscat to celebrate our 10th birthday – we introduced a new feature in the magazine to reflect the Gulf’s glittering social scene.
In the decade that I had been editing What’s On, the number of community, entertainment, and hospitality events had grown exponentially, and ever keen to report on what was ‘on’ across the region, we launched our ‘Tatler’ section that year. Our new look round-up of the people, places, and faces to know became the region’s must-read social supplement, covering everything from industry appointments to society weddings, community events, and visits from international superstars.
In the issue that came out this month 35 years ago, May 1989, that included a brilliant behind-the-scenes snap of UB40 as they embarked on a sellout
tour of the Gulf. Those Tatler pages also featured snaps of Liverpool FC’s then-manager Kenny Dalglish vacationing in the emirates; and celebrated landscape artist John Western making his return to Dubai, this time to capture the rustic architecture of the Bastikiya area on canvas. That year was also a landmark moment as we opened our first Motivate Publishing office in Abu Dhabi, and a photo of our first visitor – Maria Kazan, then PR of the Sheraton – arriving with a box of pastries for our hard-working team also made it into the Tatler pages of the May 1989 issue.
Our editorial time capsule to what was hip and happening in the Gulf was a key feature in the magazine for over a decade, featuring famous faces including royals, actors, musicians, artists, and sports stars.

Mika
This marvelous new upscale, hound-happy, Mediterranean restaurant in Yas Marina is building a word-of-mouth reputation for excellence and unparalleled sunset dinners. Chef patron Mario Loi whips up some stellar dishes, but everyone’s gone especially gaga for his fried feta and chicken Milanese. While the interiors are stunning, it’s the outdoor terrace that screams la dolce vita. Which is great news, as it’s dog-friendly.

Wonder is written in the stars WORDS:
For the entirety of their existence, humans have stared into the space above their heads and attempted to draw meaning from the yawning chasm of the cosmos. Some of us see the finger prints of deities and intelligent design, or alien worlds and ancestral planes; others – Big Dippers, constellations of the Zodiac and celestial excuses for a suspiciously wide range of personality flaws; or for a scientist – the light that reaches their eye might be the last exile of a star long-burned cold or another
phantom clue to the mystery behind the origin of everything. Whatever you see when you look up into the pixel-flecked firmament – the UAE is a wonderful place to practise this ancient pastime. Our skies are relatively unblotted by clouds for most of the year, and when we move away from the incandescence of the city, the stars multiply in number and brightness. Our task today is to find the best places to go stargazing in the UAE, what to pack for the trip, and what we can expect to see when we get there.
Roadmap to the stars
The best locations for seeing stars in the UAE.
Jebel Hafit Desert ParkOne way to give yourself a little leg up in the stargazing stakes is to get as much altitude as possible. Jebel Hafit is Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, and although it’s only fractionally closer to the twinkling marbles overhead – its rocky pedestal takes you above the denser atmosphere, beyond the fog and the haze, giving you a more HD experience for the celestial show. It’s a bit of a drive from the UAE’s big cities (around two and a half hours from Dubai, and two hours from Abu Dhabi), but the great thing about this destination is that there’s a Pura Eco glamping resort offering a range of tented and lodge accommodation (priced from Dhs450). There are also pitches for DIY camping priced from Dhs150. @jebelhafitdesertpark
Al Quaa Milky Way SpotThe sort of place you’d expect to visit when an astrophysicist says “I know a spot”. This stellar Abu Dhabi nook is about as-remote-a-sky-staring snug as you’ll find in the UAE, and its precise GPS digits used to be a closely gatekept secret. But amateur astronomers are a progressive bunch – maybe all that cosmic pondering gives them an innate reverence for transcending the self, perhaps it’s a contagious case of the space crazies – whatever the reason, the location is now easily Google-able online and there’s even a casual camping hub that’s sprung up near by. It’s about two and a half hours from Dubai, and 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi city, requires an SUV for ingress, and as the name suggests, can provide some galactically good long exposure photo ops of our native star cluster’s stunning spiral arm.
Al Qudra
Wadi ShawkaWhat is undoubtedly one of the best-known stargazing locations in the UAE, Al Qudra is easily reachable from Dubai. Which, because of light pollution, is also its main detraction. The best advice is to head a little further out, beyond the lakes and along the cycle track – to a more remote spot, shy of headlights and hubbub. Because of luminosity levels – a telescope may be your best option here, you can find inexpensive ones online that will allow you at least a ‘lite’ version of the James Webb experience.
Another great locale for watching the heavens cook, this Ras Al Khaimah gem’s natural wadiscape brings all the hikers to its yard. Star pupils make sure they arrive in daylight hours to scope out a suitable camping spot, and make the most of the clean mountain air. If you’re feeling adventurous there are lakes in them there Shawka Trail hills, and a kids’ play area (with barbecue pits) near the dam.
STAR TALK
To help you get the most out of your UAE stargazing trip, we spoke to an esteemed regional ambassador for the night sky – Khadijah Ahmad, Operations Manager of the Dubai Astronomy Group.
If you don’t have a telescope, which constellations are the best ones to look out for?
Orion, Ursa Major (containing the Big Dipper), Cygnus, and Cassiopeia.
Which times of year can we catch the annual meteor showers?
The Perseids peak around August 12 and Geminids on December 14, these are the most prominent meteor showers. They can be observed without telescopes, preferably after midnight, from dark locations away from city lights.
What time of year is best for stargazing in general?
Stargazing is favourable throughout the year in the UAE. However, cooler months, particularly from October to March, provide clearer skies and more comfortable weather for extended observation sessions.
What’s the most beautiful thing in the sky for you?
For me, the most beautiful celestial object is the Milky Way galaxy stretching across the night sky, especially when observed from a remote location far from light pollution such as Al Quaa Desert in Abu Dhabi.
What’s your favourite space fact?
As of now, thousands of exoplanets (planets orbiting stars outside our solar system) have been discovered. Some of these exoplanets are located within the habitable zone of their parent stars, where conditions might be suitable for the existence of liquid water and, potentially, life as we know it.
A STARGAZER’S TOOLKIT
If you’re interested in earning your star-hunting badge, we recommend adhering to the Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared. To help you with that, we’ve put together a checklist of all the essentials, plus a couple of ‘notessentials-but-I-deserve-a-treat’ items.
STAR MAP
There are approximately 200 billion trillion stars in the observable universe and almost as many star chart apps. Our pick of the digital constellation is Star Walk 2. It provides the best balance of price, offline functionality (patchy 5G is an occupational hazard for this pursuit), ease of use for newbies, and attractive visuals. It’s got Big Dipper energy through and through. Dhs12.99, available via Apple and Google Play stores.
BLANKET
As above, so below. The ultimate accessory for late night alfresco cosmic voyeur sessions, this snazzy space-themed Galaxy Blanket will keep you toasty warm and looking audaciously cool. In a book club kind of way. Dhs41, temu.com
HEAD TORCH
Few things say “I’m living off-grid” as loudly (or as brightly) as a head torch. These camping gadgets mean you can keep both hands free for manipulating the telescope, and/or snacking. The LEDLENSER Seo5 comes in a fashion-forward bright red decal – meaning Mars doesn’t have to be the only one dressed in a sultry crimson number for the night. Dhs300, adventurehq.ae

In Abu Dhabi, the caffeine scene is unmatched. Sip your way through a little history on one of the city’s finest cups – and discover where to find the very best of them
WORDS: DINESH RAMANATHAN
Growing up, I’d watch as people gathered around a table for steaming cups of a beverage that I could then barely stand the smell of. The bitterness of coffee and an irrefutable need for it exhibited by friends, family and teachers made me wonder what it was about a terribletasting beverage that made it a mainstay in everyone’s lives, but my own. Then I’d go and drink my ice-cold milk.
Decades later, moonlighting on a night shift, I finally tapped out and resorted to a cup of drip coffee to relieve my sleepdeprived eyes. What began as an acquired taste for me has become an unmissable precursor to the day that awaits.
We’re
United we stand: Simply put, coffee unites, and a move as innocent as grabbing a cup could mean many things. A symbol of hospitality, a welcome gesture to guests, a sign that it’s time to get serious about work, or the crux of your plans for the evening.
It’s bean a long day, without you my friend: Caffeine dependence and withdrawal are directly related. Headaches, mood swings, irregular sleep, irritability, decreased focus, energy dips and reduced productivity are all normal withdrawal symptoms if you’re trying to quit the beverage (we love extreme stunts, just not that extreme).
PRO TRIP: Wean off it a little at a time and try replacing your regular cup of caffeine with a placebo-inducing decaf brew. There’s a reason cold turkey never made it on to any menus that What’s On orders from.
not Finnished yet: Finland has the highest consumption of coffee on the planet, as per the latest report published on worldpopulationreview.com, with the average Finn consuming four cups daily. In news that will surprise no one, they also happen to be the country with the highest happiness index in the world? Coincidence? We think not. Coming in at second and third spot are Norway and Iceland, respectively.
Drink coffee, win trophy: UFC stars
Conor McGregor and Rhonda Rousey and Olympic swim legend Michael Phelps are all known to consume coffee as part of their pre-game routines. As a matter of fact, it’s a staple in most elite athlete’s pregame nutrition.
Pulp Fiction: Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta engage in a hilarious exchange with director Quentin Tarantino over a cup of, you guessed it, hot coffee. An absolute relic from Tinseltown’s archives, this masterpiece packs too many memorable scenes and lines to list, but if you’ve watched it, you’ll remember the caffeine-laced exchange instantly.
Friends: Over ten seasons of one of television’s greatest shows of all time, the gang’s New York City coffee-shop hangout, Central Perk, turned into a universal symbol of friendship and social shenanigans. Today, whether you’re a fan of the show or not, you’ll see Central Perk-branded merch just about anywhere that deals in pop culture memorabilia.
Dexter’s Laboratory: If you were raised on a diet of old-school animation such as Dexter’s Lab, you’ll certainly recall the boy wonder’s father and his infamous meltdown in Topped Off, upon discovering that his kids have emptied the kitchen cupboards and left no coffee for him to drink the next morning. Things end on a happy note though, as a South American coffee farmer and his endearing donkey come to the rescue.
The Sopranos: Remember Paulie’s annoyance at the coffee house? Every time I watch the scene of him trying to order “just coffee”, I can absolutely relate. Some brews are best kept simple.
Better Call Saul: Dingding-ding! Mark Margolis as chilling mobster Hector Salamanca first meets with never-say-die P.I. Mike Ehrmantraut at Loyola’s Family Restaurant, and the only thing he orders at the diner is “coffee, black.”
Seattle’s Best Coffee
1
Many would argue the Emerald City is the undisputed home of coffee, and some would even win that argument. Seattle’s Best Coffee, like other household names in the industry was born in America’s urban tech-centre, where coffee is as synonymous with the city as are cloudy skies, grunge music and Pacific Ocean-inspired fare.
OUR PICK: The Vanilla Latte. Foamy with just a hint of vanilla, adding some muchneeded flavour.
@seattlesbestcoffee
2
% Arabica
These guys understand the value of a good, solid, home Arabica blend. If you’re the DIY kind, pick up a bag of their Arabica beans for Dhs110, grind them yourself at home and you’ll have a nice jar of drip coffee that’ll last you a month.
OUR PICK: The Cappuccino – smooth as silk, they get the taste, texture, and temperature just right. @arabica.uae
tashas
Tashas is one of a slew of cool cafes that fronts the Marina of Al Bateen Marina. Oozing strong Insta-feed energy thanks to its beautiful décor, the concept originated in South Africa, but already feels like part of the local fabric here. Sublime interiors and a kitchen team with a fastidious eye for gastronomic detail make this eatery an essential pin-drop for those that enjoy crafty cuisine with their coffee.
OUR PICK: The Greek coffee. Boiled, not brewed, it’s strong, rich and foamy –everything you want your coffee to be. @tashascafeae
3
DRVN
Fuelled by the owner’s passion for exotic and classic cars, DRVN Café is a homegrown concept with stylish, automotive-themed branding backing a great selection of coffee blends, Neapolitan pizza and other creations. Also, watch out for their food trucks at prominent festivals around town.
OUR PICK: Their merch. While the food and drink are great, their merch is also auto-inspired and is available in cool, creative designs. @drvn.ae
5
Saravanaa Bhavan
While India’s favourite hot beverage is usually tea (spelled c-h-a-i), head to the south of the country and you’ll notice a stronger preference for coffee. Their version of drip coffee, called ‘filter coffee’, is served in a little steel cup and a cool-it-yourself saucer pairing. Tell your server you’d like it cooled, and there’s a good chance you’ll be staring at a neat little cup of frothy, sweetened, slightly cooled coffee, seconds of showmanship later.
OUR PICK: The Filter Coffee - milk and sugar included. @saravanaabhavanuae
Illy Café
If you’re looking to stay up and stay sharp, this is what you need. A strong, no-nonsense brand from Italy, you’ve likely seen their iconic logo and red-and-silver branding around town. You can get it in single-origin Arabica, decaf, medium and dark variations.
OUR PICK: The double espresso. Goodbye chicken soup, this is absolute rocket fuel. @illycafead
Space
6
Art House Café
Another colourful addition to Al Bateen’s caffeine scene is Art House Café. Every inch feels, and smells like the inspirational, creative space it truly is, surrounded by botanical greens and abstract painted scenes. There’s art lining the walls, art on the plates, and artistry taking place on the coffee front, with their impressive array of iced and hot beverages.
OUR PICK: The Spanishborn Cortado – equal parts espresso and steamed milk –to ease you into the morning. @arthousecafead
Stripped back and minimalistic Space café in Al Qana is all smart slate greys and smooth concretes. Designed as a community space to welcome all, it’s an all-day eatery that puts fruit fusions into its sips and serves. While you can of course come here for traditional brews, you shouldn’t miss trying their more unique concoctions, like the rose and saffron iced lattes, and pistachio frappe.

OUR PICK: Space’s own-brand cold brew, for best showcasing their true coffee connoisseur status. @spaceae

TOTO
Dining with waves, views, and the flavours of Italia
Athlete-backed vision, Italian classics, and premium gastronomy converge at Mamsha Al Saadiyat’s newest restaurant, TOTO. The Madridborn concept, backed by football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and tennis titan Rafael Nadal has taken off to a sizzling start, with an impending Downtown Dubai opening hot on its heels. We’re excited to unravel everything TOTO packs – its flavours, ambiance, feel and more. Don’t forget to stroll around and admire the art on display.
THE CONCEPT
of Italy, the menu packs in a glorious selection of traditional antipasti, pastas, pizzas, stews, meats and seafood, all served with a modern, creative touch.
THE MENU
This vibrant, 1950s-inspired concept is renowned for its traditional recipes and extensive wine offering. Showcasing the unmistakeable flavours, hues, and aromas
Leaf through their menu for Italian classics you’ll never tire of. We decide to try their antipasti menu, with the cold burrata from Puglia, tomato carpaccio and basil pesto (Dhs90). The standout star? Thinly sliced, neatly-folded, almost petal-like tomato, lightly seasoned with olive oil and salt. We’re eagerly recommended the hot antipasti, with an order of the suppli rice ball al telefono (Dhs65), a crispy, filling, contrast to the burrata opener. For mains, we opt for the traditional Pizza Capricciosa (Dhs100). Margherita fan? You’re good. Meat lover? Check. Here for the sauce? No problem. And the crispiness and theatrics are the footnote you seek.
A cursory glance out into the nownight sky teleports us from an evening of flavours, to the charms of the Saadiyat
beachfront. TOTO is glamorous and classy, but doesn’t overhit its serve - a casual, intimate tone reflecting the capital’s perpetual calm.
For dessert, our beaming server makes a classic TOTO tiramisu (Dhs55) appear. Slightly coffee-heavy, your preference for this timeless pick could depend on which way you prefer your coffee-to-cream ratio, but for javaheads such as ourselves, it hits all the right notes.
THE ENTERTAINMENT
While you can enjoy live music every weekend, what truly entertains is TOTO’s theatrical central oven, where you get to see your order come to life, with the recipes paying homage to the golden age of Italian cinema, particularly Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso. Which we recommend you watch, for it all to make sense.
TOTO, Mamsha Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, 12pm to 12am Sun to Thurs, 12pm to 1am Fri and Sat. Tel: (0)2 643 0228. @toto.abudhabi
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Experience classy, flavoursome dining by the beach at what we’re positive will be the capital’s next culinary blockbuster.
THE GREAT DEBATE:
IS IT TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO THE BUFFET BRUNCH?
What’s On is dedicated to getting to the bottom of the debates that matter, this month – we tackle that most hallowed of culinary institutions, the buffet brunch. Is it on its last orders? Or just the first round of starters? You decide.
THE CASE FOR:
Miles Buckeridge, Deputy EditorWhat’s On Dubai
Ladies and gentlemen of the imaginary jury, I’m sure the opposing counsel will try to draw your attention to any giddy nostalgia or fond memories you might hold for this, what was once a grand institution. But you must not be dazzled by their winning smiles, infectious joie de vivre and deft turn of phrase... if you examine Exhibit B carefully, you
will clearly see, it has performed its last jostling elbowed run at the seafood table. The chocolate fountain has run dry, we must bid buffet brunches a final farewell. Sure, there was a time when their gluttonous excess could be conscionably digested, but now – in the Thunberg era of zero waste and renewable drinking straws – those ideals, like the gnarled khubz at 4pm on the live shawarma station, have turned rather stale. Times change, cultures move on and we must embrace the new, or risk getting left behind. Besides, the fresh winds of a la carte brunching, with sharing starters and mains au choix
surely represent a more sophisticated, higher food quality format. Out with the mass-catered mixed-temp lasagna, in with precision grilled, a la minute antichuchos Viva la brunching revolution comrades. I’ll rest my argument on one final point – but its an important one. Which other culinary engagement would you pile a plate high with little regard for the mix of fare on it? The only one I can think of, is a child’s birthday party. I put it to you, that it’s time to blow out the candles and take off the party hats, brunch is too old for that now, we should let it live with dignity.
THE CASE AGAINST:
AJ & Lucy aka @mrandmrsbrunch
As passionate advocates of Dubai’s gastronomic identity over the past 15 years, we salute the buffet brunch and stand firm in our assertion that they must remain a cornerstone of our social and cultural fabric. They are a celebration of variety and a weekend institution that have become as much a part of Dubai’s glittering reputation as its towering skyscrapers and bustling souks.
The buffet is a symbol of abundance and sharing, echoing the generous spirit of
Middle Eastern hospitality. They are also the very emblem of inclusivity, catering to the varied tastes and specific dietary preferences of our cosmopolitan populace. The freedom to explore and share the joy of discovering new dishes and meeting new friends is something not possible while being restricted to your table. The buffet brunch is an experience that transcends the mere act of eating. They are social affairs; a celebration of cultural unity and shared joy.
This level of choice and inclusivity is lost in the rigid structure of a la carte menus, which often limit the diner to a singular experience rather than a tapestry of flavours. Buffets result in efficient turnover
and the ability to cater to large numbers of guests, which is particularly important in a city that thrives on tourism and large-scale dining. Let’s uphold the buffet brunch tradition, not as an outdated custom, but as a vibrant, evolving celebration that captures the dynamic essence of our city.
If you want to take part in a live case study, @mrandmrsbrunch recommend the buffets at Traiteur, @parkhyattdubai and @alqasrbrunch. Miles is a passionate supporter of the @tascadubai brunch.

BORD
EAU
Unpacking French flavours and Michelinstar elegance by a star international chef…
BACKGROUND
Chef Nicolas Isnard spearheads the Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri’s new and improved iteration of Bord Eau, with fine French flavours and Michelin-star elegance coming to the capital’s diners here.
FOOD
Our gastronomic odyssey begins with the Burgundy - Modern Onion Soup 2.0 (Dhs98). A fresh spin on the French classic, chances are you’ll take your time savouring the flavours and a side of emulsion. Bord Eau gets their gourmet vision right, and with patient service, knowledgable sommeliers and a star chef piloting the experience, they know how to make the best of a voyage and its stopovers.
We head to our second stop, all the way down in Mexico for a taste-soaked portion of seabass ceviche with guava, citrus corn crisp, and the striking star of the dish, the jalapeño sorbet (Dhs124). While the sorbet might be served cold, the jalapeno brings the sting you seek from Mexican fare. This jalapeño sorbet is the star of this evening’s show for us. Which isn’t to imply in the least, that the other courses don’t leave a lasting impression.
Although the concept is French and advertised as such, Chef Isnard and co. do a great job of tapping in to rich flavours native to every region their courses are inspired by.
We traverse the planet in a matter of minutes before being treated to Maghrebi flavours, as a Moroccan dish of red mullet, confit eggplant and saffron sauce (Dhs168) arrives for our main. Again, there’s a clear winner, with the signature packing in its earthiness. For our final
course, we’re in Cuba for dessert, and a neat serving of the pina colada (Dhs68) arrives – with a Bord Eau spin, of course. Slightly heavier on the coconut which we’re fans of, there’s the subtlety again: Abu Dhabi is indeed, an archipelago, and this is a fitting finale to our culinary journey this evening.
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
Bord Eau gets the concept of a culinary voyage right – equal parts fuss-free and culinary class.
SERVICE AND DÉCOR
Take your time chatting with their staff to gain a deeper understanding of what pairs best and what inspires their creations. And as serene and ‘gramworthy as their interiors are, we wouldn’t change anything about our experience after being seated on their terrace to soak in gorgeous views of Abu Dhabi’s own Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Aarti SaundalkarMUSIC AT THE MOVIES
Two creative worlds collide as the big screen is brought to life on the great stage at these performances in Dubai…
Hans Zimmer returns to Dubai
One of cinema’s ‘all-time top scorers’, Hans Zimmer began his big screen composing career in the 1980s. After collaborating with other movie music icons (and writing the theme tune to UK quiz show, Going for Gold) his big solo break came when he penned the score to the seminal, multi-Oscar winning hit, Rain Man (1988).
In the four decades between then and now, Zimmer has now composed music for more than 150 films including stirring accompaniments to Interstellar, Inception, Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean and recently, the highly innovative and hanting soundtracks of both installments of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune - adaptation.
As captivating as his music is when watching the movie, nothing prepared Dubai for his live performance at the Coca-Cola Arena in January 2023.
The entire production of the three-hour long concert was exceptional to the point
that – more than a year later – eyes still sparkle during discussions.
To say it was well-received is an understatement, and the addition of a second date last year only cemented how well-loved Zimmer’s music is across all cultures.
Those who missed it in 2023 are in luck, because the multiple Academy Awardwinning composer announced his return to Dubai to grace the stage of the City Walk performance centre once again this year on May 31.
And Zimmer fever has done it again as seats to the show sold out, which resulted in the venue adding a second date on June 1.
Performing alongside Zimmer, who turns in staggering performances on a number of different instruments himself, will be an army of world-renowned musicians. Highlights include Tina Guao on the cello, Pedro Eustache on the winds, and many of the vocal artists from the original soundtracks.
Tickets are now available via coca-colaarena.com and hanszimmerlive.com, with prices starting from Dhs299. If you have Zimmer, or one of his iconic scores on your mind, and you still don’t have your tickets yet, we can only ask (through gritted teeth), ‘What are you dune?!’

CINEMA AT THE OPERA
WHEN: MAY 11 TO 13
As we often see, long after a movie is over it’s the film’s score which sticks in your head. Added in during post-production, movie scores live rent free in our brains longer than any thrilling scene ever will. But just imagine how different the movie experience will be with these tunes played live in front of us while we watch the movie on the big screen?
This is exactly what Dubai Opera is bringing to audiences this month. The performing arts centre will be showcasing three popular films with their iconic scores played live in the opera house while you watch the popcorn munching action.
Star Wars: A New Hope
When: May 11, 2pm and 8pm
Whether you’re a fan of Star Wars or not, John Williams’ score for this renowned saga is well known. On May 11, you can hear this exciting melody live as you watch this 1977 American epic on at the Dubai Opera.
Quick movie synopsis: In a galaxy far, far away, the struggle for freedom unfolds as the Rebel Alliance battles the sinister Galactic Empire. Join the heroes as they embark on a mission to destroy the Death Star.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
When: May 12, 2pm and 8pm
Fan of Captain Jack Sparrow? Who isn’t?
Showcasing the thrill of the high sea adventure, join trio – Will, Elizabeth and Jack Sparrow on the big screen at Dubai Opera against the backdrop of the iconic tunes by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and Dubai Festival Chorus.
Quick movie synopsis: An exciting and sometimes just plain hilarious journey ensues as Will goes in pursuit of pirates to save the love of his life, Elizabeth who happens to have a valuable coin linked to a curse. And because Captain Jack Sparrow is involved, you just never know what’s going to happen.
Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid
When: May 13, 8pm
Before you start, yes, Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid is a silent film… but while there are no words, the cinematic masterpiece has an emotive soundtrack, which makes up for the lack of conversation in this comedy-drama. Conducted by Timothy Brock, the orchestra brings the narrative to life through enchanting melodies.
Quick movie synopsis: This silent masterpiece is about a vagrant who discovers an orphan and brings him up as his own. When the boy’s mother reappears on the scene their relationship is put in jeopardy.

Words: Aarti SaundalkarLOVE AT FIRST STING
Rock legends Scorpions hit the capital
whistle* ‘Take me… to the magic of the moment’… It’s been nearly six decades since Scorpions crawled their way onto the rock scene with their iconic tunes.
Formed in 1965, the classic rock band, who hail from Hannover, became a firm favourite amongst fans not just in their native Germany, but across the world. Music fans have rocked out to their unforgettable beats and influential lyrics for the last six decades, which reflected remarkable developments in Germany during the time. While their first era of fans may have worn down the replay button on their cassette players back in the day, this month the band will be bringing their best-loved anthems to the capital with their Love at First Sting tour.
For one night only, on May 17, the Scorpions will bring plenty of magical moments to the Etihad Arena, with their signature arena-shaking guitar
riffs and power-soaked vocals filling the super venue.
The tour shares its moniker with the band’s 1984 album of the same name, which contained some of Scorpions’ best hits including Bad Boys Running Wild, Rock You Like A Hurricane, and Coming Home (oh, those riffs!). It featured simultaneously alongside two other Scorpion albums: Animal Magnetism (1980) and Blackout (1982) on the US charts.
Speaking of albums, Scorpions have a whopping 19 in total, meaning there’s an extensive backlog of musical mastery to choose from for their Abu Dhabi setlist. We’ve high hopes to hear chart-topping tracks including Tease Me Please Me and Winds of Change, the latter of which has amassed over a billion views on YouTube, and more.
The current five-member line-up includes leader and founder Rudolf Schenker, Matthias Jabs on guitar, Pawel Maciwoda on bass, Mikkey Dee on drums and lead vocalist, Klaus Meine.
Keeping in mind that the band was formed in 1965, the fact that they are still rocking it on stage like a hurricane like the good ol’ days makes this a concert you don’t want to miss.

HERITAGE HANDICRAFTS
In the fast-paced UAE, it’s important not to forget where it all began. Luckily for us, there are centres and organisations across the UAE tasked with protecting, preserving, and educating visitors on some of the UAE’s sacred traditions. Here’s where to find them…
Gahwa
Fellow coffee drinker, we know how important that cup of caffeine is. Now it’s easy for us to head to the nearest café to grab a cup of coffee, but Qahwa is a true Emirati tradition and includes a whole cultural experience involving the traditional preparation and presentation. The practice has been part of Emirati hospitality for centuries, passed down from generation to generation,
and it is one which the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi even got involved in to safeguard.
At Qasr Al Hosn, you can gain an in-depth knowledge of Arabic coffee, going through each stage of the process from roasting to cooling, grounding and brewing. Each stage has a distinctive technique using traditional tools and etiquette unique to the UAE. qasralhosn.ae

Falconry
Falcons are a cultural symbol of the UAE and falconry is a traditional and highly valued custom. For Bedouins, falcons played an important role in helping families survive in the desert, and bonds were so strong, the falcons even became part of the family. Passing on the custom that has been practised for more than 2,000 years, at The Mohamed Bin Zayed Falconry and Desert Physiognomy School, little ones can take a Foundation Course consisting of practical and theoretical workshops for Dhs250 (available on weekends). For family time in the desert, there’s a group activity where you will learn of the importance of falconry in UAE heritage, gain knowledge of falconry equipment and basic falcon anatomy, understand different falcon species, and even hear stories of Sheikh Zayed and his falconry passion. A two-hour workshop is Dhs200. mbzfalconryschool.com
04
Arabic calligraphy
Listed on UNESCO’s Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage list, Arabic calligraphy is a beautiful craft that many work hard to preserve, despite technological advances. Thankfully, there is no shortage of Arabic calligraphy workshops across Abu Dhabi and the UAE. At the Cultural Foundation at Qasr Al Hosn, there are several Arabic workshops from calligraphy basics to abstract lettering and Diwani script. There’s even calligraphy workshops for children.

Al Sadu
Talli
Talli is another form of decorative embroidery practiced by Emirati women. Cotton or silk threads are intertwined with gold and silver threads. It is used to decorate collars, sleeves and hems of the kandoora and thawb. It is time-consuming and complex, which requires patience and concentration – similar to knitting.
The Women’s Handicraft Centre at Al Mushrif in Abu Dhabi not only showcases local artists’ skills in its museum, but buildings (huts) around the area also serve as workshops, where female artists display silver thread work, weaving, Arabian oils and more, all of which are available to purchase. Educational workshops are also held at festivals such as the Traditional Handicrafts Festival in Al Ain, if you want to learn the craft.
Al-Sadu is a traditional form of weaving done into geometric shapes which originated among the Bedouins of the desert. It can be found in many forms, from soft furnishings and decorative items to more practical pieces used for camels and horses. Although still practiced in rural communities today, the practitioners are older women whose numbers are sadly declining. The art is named by UNESCO as an endangered Emirati craft in need of `safeguarding. To help preserve this craft, Alghadeer Emirati Crafts – a non-profit organisation – hosts workshops at various cultural and heritage events across the capital.

PARK LIFE
Make the most of free fitness classes taking place across Abu Dhabi’s favourite alfresco spots
Let’s face it: May is the last month to take your workouts outdoors before the balmy summer heat makes it impossible to burn those calories in an open-air setting. And encouraging residents to make the most of the final weeks of alfresco season is Active Parks, a free, community-focused movement turning Abu Dhabi’s leafy green parks and popular outdoor spaces into ideal backdrop for group fitness sessions. Whether you’re a fitness pro or looking to live a little healthier, sessions are free-to-attend and open to all abilities. Taking place at 11 locations across the city, classes vary from functional fitness, to football, Zumba and basketball. With a weekly changing schedule, instant on-site registration for most classes (a handful of classes online with a WhatsApp logo should be prebooked), and all equipment provided, you simply need to show up, and sweat it out.
THE LOCATIONS
THE CLASSES
Words: Alice Holtham
Designed to improve both strength and balance, functional fitness classes taking place across Yas Island, Khalifa City, and Saadiyat Island are hour-long sweat sessions packed with lots of lunges, squats, twisting and lifting, designed to spike your heart rate and shred those calories. Looking to up your endurance on the track?
Challenge your 5k abilities with Adidas Runners during sessions on Al Maryah island, or pound the track at Zayed Sports City. For something a little more lowtempo, get bendy with yoga or find your zen with a mindful meditation, both offered against the backdrop of one of the world’s finest beaches at Mamsha Al Saadiyat. Or if you’re simply looking to up your step count, join Reem Walkers for a stroll around Reem Central Park.
LET’S GET PHYSICAL
Whether you’re a fitness newbie or looking to level up, these intense workout studios are guaranteed to whip you into shape
BARRY’S
Going to a normal HIIT class then claiming you’re familiar with Barry’s Bootcamp is kind of like getting a papercut and saying you know how labour feels. It’s not so much a workout as a 50-minute, heart-pounding and furiously intense workshop where energetic instructors bellow “Be your best you!” over blaring Calvin Harris songs and red-hued strobes. All conducted across treadmills and benches in a space affectionately known as the Red Room, which feels like the inside of a nightclub. The OG Barry’s workout alternates between the tredder (Barry’s lingo for treadmill) and floor. You might be jogging uphill for one minute, sprinting on a flat surface ‘till your lungs burn the next, with a range of incline walks, runs and sprints in between, before hitting the floor for plank jacks, mountain climbers, and bicep curls, depending on which specific body part the trainer has planned to annihilate that day.

F45 TRAINING
F45, short for ‘Functional 45’, is an immensely popular high-intensity, expert-led circuitbased group training concept beloved across the planet, offering a wide range of themed classes to challenge and motivate you. All sessions are 45-minutes long, and (according to F45 experts) burn up to 700 calories a go. All are worth your time, but the cardio and resistance-heavy Hybrid class has become a favourite among F45 adherents. As the name suggests, it combines the best of various fitness protocols to increase endurance and supercharge your metabolism. An ideal aid for your summer shred.
F45 Training, Al Raha Mall, Al Raha Beach, free two-week trial, Dhs120 (single class).

PILATES LAB
If you thought normal Pilates was hard, wait until you try it on the Reformer bed. With a sliding platform, the bed helps you stretch into new positions, while pulleys and springs give resistance to work your muscles and joints. Reformer Pilates will tone your whole body, especially your core, as well as improve flexibility and fix bad posture. Give it a go at Pilates Lab, a beautiful space to strengthen, lengthen, and challenge your mind and body. Pilates Lab, International Tennis Center, Zayed Sports City, Dhs130 (single class). pilatesabudhabi.com
CRANK
This fitness studio at Sheikha Fatima Park keeps residents in shape in very swish surroundings. As your admirably enthusiastic Crank trainer takes you through each step of the routine, you forget this is even exercise as their encouragement cranks up your confidence and energises your soul. Pedal through heavy climbs and saddle up for powerful sprints during their signature Ride sessions where, in a dim room punctuated with disco lights, you will move, ride, and push – hard.
Crank, Sheikha Fatima Park, Dhs80 (trial session), Dhs130 (single class). crank-fit.com
THE PLATFORM STUDIOS
KHABIB GYM
There’s really no mucking about at Khabib Gym. Which is hardly surprising given the owner of this state-of-the-art complex on Yas Island is the undefeated UFC champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Staffed with internationally accredited instructors and trainers, the facility caters to different disciplines of martial arts, with a large, matted area for grappling sports such as Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling, and a separate studio for strikingbased sports such as kickboxing and Muay Thai. The latter is taught at a mastery class, where champions Jaurez and Izabel, revered figures in the sport, guide folks through the intricacies of traditional Muay Thai techniques. This class offers a professional and immersive experience, allowing enthusiasts to learn the art of striking, clinching, and defensive maneuvers. The rigorous and dynamic nature of Muay Thai not only builds physical strength but also sharpens mental acuity, fostering discipline and resilience.
Khabib Gym, West Yas Community, Yas Island, from Dhs157 (single class). khabibgym.ae
New gym The Platform Studios offers a series of hardcore workouts, including Ride, HIIT, Booty Burn and Reformer Pilates, but the description for the Box and Strength class comes with a warning: “This is designed to make you sweat”. In this class, amateur boxers dive headfirst into the fundamentals of boxing, while simultaneously building strength. Prepare to unleash a barrage of punches on the bag, switching up your combos every round to tackle grueling strength exercises. There’s no backing down here –you’ll be dripping with sweat and feeling the burn with every jab and lift. The capital appeal of Prague
A cultural city break in Central Europe
Words:
UNPACKINGPrague
Welcome to the capital of the Czech Republic - a city whose history never fails to educate, whose myths will raise your brows, and whose architecture has stood the test of time, enroute to becoming one of Europe’s most dynamic emerging tourism hotspots...
WHAT TO SEE
Prague Castle
The largest ancient castle in the world built over seven hectares, Prague Castle is a unique mix of Baroque, Renaissance, Gothic and Romanesque architecture. Be sure to admire the St. Vitus Cathedral, St. George’s Basilica, and the Golden Lane. At the top, peer out into the city and soak in its architectural grandeur.
Wenceslas Square
A site of historical importance, this spot was named after St. Wenceslas (don’t miss the statue) and has played host to several events, celebrations, and demonstrations. A short walk away from the National Museum, this is where you go to get your souvenir fix. You’ll want to hang back after sundown, as the lively energy only gets busier with nightlife options in the New Town.
Narodni Muzeum
Also known as the National Museum, the Narodni Muzeum is a true treat for culture lovers visiting Prague. The grand façade of this neo-Renaissance structure will welcome you to a site that houses a slew of attractions to take you on a journey of the region’s history, culture and art. Find out more about the Prague that was, and how it shaped the Prague that you find yourself in today.
Charles Bridge
St. Vitus Cathedral
Glass windows, Gothic architecture, and its standing as a long-renowned coronation site of kings in the region are only a few reasons St. Vitus Cathedral is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Europe.
Lennon Wall
Dedicated to The Beatles legend, this iconic wall has been decorated with John Lennon-inspired graffiti, illustrations and art for close to four decades, proudly showcasing a recurring theme of peace and love. Once you’re done taking your pictures, don’t forget to visit the John Lennon Pub right across the street.
With unparalleled views of the city on either side, you can easily lose an afternoon under the sun as you listen to the sounds of the Vltava River. Prague’s standing as a dog-friendly city is only amplified here, as families and their pups take a stroll on Charles Bridge, which is lined with 30 Baroque status of historical importance. This quintessential Prague experience is mere steps away from the Old Town.
WHAT TO BUY
5 SOUVENIR IDEAS:
01. Bohemian Glass
Carefully crafted by hand in factories about an hour away from the Czech capital, Bohemian glass is available to buy as vases, decorative figurines, drink glasses and more. Available in classic transparent pieces or coloured variants, these pretty pieces are the perfect momento from any trip to Prague. Look out for the little golden sticker at the bottom certifying these pieces’ authenticity.
02. Marionettes
These wooden handmade puppets are definite head turners when you’re about the city looking for things to buy. Unique and a great keepsake, they’re wood carved with plaster cast elements; they’re painted beautifully so make sure you get a close up look to appreciate the intricate detail.
03. Nesting Dolls
Matryoshka dolls, or nesting dolls, have Russian origins, but are also available widely in Prague. They’ve gained fame as a local collectible over time and are available in numerous colours, and will make the ideal addition to your showcase, as a gift, or just a reminder of your travels through this charming city.
04. Czech Garnet
This beautiful red mineral adorns jewellery and can be found widely in souvenir and ornament stores. The dark red colour, sometimes considered the national rock of the country, comes from the Central
Bohemian Mountains, having been mined in the area since the Middle Ages.
05. Czech Porcelain
Like Bohemian glass and similar souvenirs, Czech porcelain is known for its meticulous craftsmanship and lasting quality. Smooth, durable and designed beautifully, these will make the perfect addition to your kitchen, with elegant dinnerware and tea sets available widely on your travels.
A STAY AT ANDAZ PRAGUE
PROPERTY
With beautiful Bohemian art adorning the lobby, dining space downstairs and traditional Czech myths illustrated on the walls as you stroll in, Andaz Prague is an ideal base for discovering this cultural city, located a ten-minute walk from the Old Town. Peaceful and pristine, you’re steps away from the tram line if you choose to ride transit like a local and explore the city.
ROOM AND DINING
We stay at Andaz Prague’s luxurious Wintergarden suite, complete with neatly-cut Bohemian glass accessories, a well-stocked minibar and Bohemian art adorning the walls.
Pull open the door to the mini bar, and you’re greeted by a line of Czech colas, juicies, fermented drinks and still and sparkling water. A Nespresso machine with Italian and Colombian coffee pods, as well as refreshing tea blends mean you’ll likely never run out of fragrant, refreshing concoctions to sip on.
When it’s meal time, simply scan the QR code on your TV screen and order in-room dining from either their all-day kitchen; or Zem, the in-house avantgarde Czech eat. Chances are, you’ll want to dine on your own personal terrace in the Wintergarden
Suite. We recommend the Czech Benedict (Dhs44) for breakfast, the smashed avocado sandwich (Dhs50) for lunch and the Andaz Burger (Dhs75) for dinner.
The bathrooms are stocked with epsom salts to underscore the rejuvenation factor, and a fragrant line of soaps and hygiene products from Moooi add a luxurious, local touch.
FEMME SPA
This pampering space offers a range of rejuvenating treatments that will up the relaxation quotient on your stay. Alongside all the more traditional treatments, you can book in for interesting sounding experiences like the relaxing hot massage with white chocolate oil and the brand-new cell story/miracletox face treatment, a noninvasive treatment based on the principle of liquid needles that come to Prague after having established a reputation in the US, Korea and Singapore. Most treatments at Femme last 60 minutes and are priced at 3500 CZK (approximately Dhs540).
WALK OF MYTHS EXPERIENCE
This fascinating 13-part walking tour by Andaz Prague will have you discovering famous myths and legends around the city. On your way into the hotel, stroll through the foyer with blue-and-white art illustrating the city’s myths and legends on either side. Explore the city over approximately two hours, either by yourself, or accompanied by a seasoned tour guide. You’ll walk briskly, and in amazement, around the city as you pass, and stop at attractions such as the majestic Prague Castle, the sprawling Charles Bridge, and the Powder Tower. Major highlights on the Walk of Myths and Legends include the Old Town Orlo in Prague’s Old Town, the Golden Lane, one of the most ‘grammable locations in Prague dotted with quaint houses from the 16th century, and the Golem of Prague, the city’s “kindly protector-turned-monster”. Other notable attractions you’ll be introduced to include the 7 Keys of Treasure at St. Vitus Cathedral, and the 4 Gates of Prague, high into the foothills of Prague above the main city centre, that will give you the perfect opportunity to scan the city for trademark towers, churches and sites of prominence that decorate its skyline.

THINGS TO DO
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: Kalba
Nestled along the eastern coast close to Fujairah and approximately 10-minutes away from the Oman border, Sharjah’s Kalba is one exclave you shouldn’t bypass
Hanging Gardens
Located a few metres past the Kalba tunnel, Hanging Gardens is Kalba’s latest attraction. Home to more than 100,000 trees and flower blooms, its most striking feature is the waterfall. You can get your photographs at the base, or walk up the hiking trail for closer views (at different angles) and a good leg workout.
Hanging Gardens is also home to a running track, mini skatepark, play areas and two restaurants. There’s also an excursion train complete with train stations running along the base.
Al Hefaiyah Lake
Similar to Hanging Gardens, Al Hefaiyah Lake will make you wonder if you are still in the UAE. Nestled in the Kalba mountains this picturesque water reservoir is about five minutes from the Hanging Gardens, past Al Hiyar Tunnel.
Here, visitors can hop onto boats and take a tour of the lake, hike the mountain trails that vary in length and difficulty, and chill out with little ones in the play areas. It is also home to Al Hefaiyah Mosque, which features a women’s prayer hall, an outdoor courtyard and an Islamic library.
All that exploring can be hungry work, so make a pit-stop at the Al Hefaiyah Rest House, which comes with lovely views of the lake and Kalba’s mountains.
Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre
This ecotourism project in Kalba is located a few minutes away from Kingfisher Retreat by Sharjah Collection and offers visitors a tour of the oldest mangrove forest in the emirates.
Inside, you can birdwatch and spot rare breeds such as the Arabian Collared Kingfisher, and marine life like crabs, green turtles and other fish and microorganisms. Expect to walk for approximately two hours (pace dependant), so comfy shoes are a must. Maps around the grounds guide you as you make your way around so you don’t miss something important.
Need to refuel? There is a coffee shop on site.
Dhs15 per adult and children under 12 free, Tue to Thur 9am to 6.30pm, Fri 2pm to 6.30pm, Sat and Sun 11am to 6.30pm, closed on Mon.
Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Center
Located at the base of the Hajar Mountains a little outside Kalba city lies the Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Center. Expect to see cheetahs, Arabian Tahr, Arabian Rock Hyrax, Arabian Wolf, deers, hyenas, and more. Khor Kalba Fort
For those seeking a dose of heritage, a visit to Khor Kalba Fort is a must. Dating back approximately to 1745, this fort displays various artefacts and findings through excavations in the area. Spanning ceramics to stone, metal tools and more, there is a treasure trove of items within its four unequal walls. Take a close look at some of them as some are marked with important symbols from previous civilisations.
Located opposite the Khor Kalba Fort is Bait Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamad al Qassimi, which exhibits the belongings of the Kalba royal family. The bait
(translated to house in English) reflects the authentic Emirati architectural style and was the residence of Sheikh Saeed and his family. It is one of the most beautiful heritage houses in the UAE, which makes it a spot not to skip. Sat to Thurs 8am to 8pm, Fri 4pm to 8pm, Dhs10 per adult and Dhs5 per child ages two to 12. sharjahmuseums.ae

SIRO, One Za’abeel
Dubai
If you’re the type that likes to hit the gym and/or spa hard on holiday, this could be the stay for you...
LOCATION
Taking up residence inside the engineering marvel that is the One Za’abeel building, SIRO has managed to carve its own distinct space, jump-squatting-up from its 30th-floor lobby. It’s a Strava pin that places the hotel alongside the sawtoothed towerscape of Downtown Dubai, DIFC and offers elevated vistas that take in The Dubai Frame and Za’abeel Parks.
LOOK AND FEEL
Perhaps unsurprisingly for a hotel that has proudly declared itself a space of fitness and recovery – SIRO’s design orbits around core themes of zen and balance. There’s a sense of Scandinavian serenity throughout the communal and living areas, with soothing ergonomic design touches, zero clutter minimalism and muted organic tones. SIRO subliminally communicates the idea of wellness and clean living so effectively, you honestly feel a few pounds lighter and pretty much purged of cortisol, within moments of arriving. But these calming Yins hide rooms with fiery Yangs. The Experience Box, for example – where you can take HIIT and ‘Sculpt’ classes –is a choreographed thunderstorm of LED lighting.
ROOMS
The rooms have been designed to continue this wellness focus, with amenities and features that deliberately contribute to a sound body, sound mind, and sound sleep. We stayed in a Recovery Suite (there are Fitness Suites available for those that need a quick palate cleansing treadmill sesh in between the group cardio workouts) which comes with a private treatment room, special recovery bath, Swedish ladder and a bedroom with soporific sleep-enhancing features. It’s all incredibly luxurious but in a healthy, thoroughly unostentatious, SIRO way.
FACILITIES
Split between the twin paths of Fitness and Recovery, the facilities at SIRO mean you really can have your cake, eat it, and then burn off the associated calories. Train like a professional sports star taking one of those off-season Dubai breaks, with The Fitness Lab. It operates across a gym and several separate studios, offering up to 50 weekly elite-athlete-conceived classes in HIIT, pilates, cycling and other sweat-baiting activities. On the flip side, The Recovery
Lab is part premium spa – part yoga shala, with treatment rooms that offer technologically enhanced rejuvenation techniques, coldplunges, massages, dry-needling, assisted stretching, compression therapy and skin HIIT.
FOOD AND DRINK
SIRO’s own contribution to the edible experience is understandably, holistically minded with a nutritionist on hand to guide you towards making good choices; a Refuel juice bar; curated modular meals; and the outstanding, French-cuisine-focused all-day diner, Aelia. But there’s more. Because the hotel is situated in the One Za’abeel building – guests are just footsteps away from the gastronomic wonderland that is, The Link – with restaurants backed by a constellation of Michelin-recognised talent. So as with everything at SIRO, there are choices – you can take the road paved with tofu and kale, or the naughtier, arguably tastier one of butter and quail.
RATES
The standard room and suite packages usually come with set group fitness classes included. The treatment sessions are often chargeable extras, although there’ll soon be periodical offers with more wellness inclusions. The Recovery suite prices start at around Dhs3,400 (plus taxes), but there are lead-in options from Dhs1,200 which also include access to One Za’abeel’s Tapasake pool.
