EDITOR’S LETTER
WE LOVE THE UAE...
We love its people, its places, and its idiosyncratic little quirks that make no sense to anyone other than those who insist on them being there in the first place. We love the weather (mostly), the food (always), living life on the beach, living life at night, and the sheer adventure of being in a country that’s surrounded by desert. We’re at our happiest when we’re surfing, paddle-boarding, diving, brunching, racing, skiing, driving. We love the UAE, and we’re not ashamed to admit it. This month’s What’s On is a celebration of the UAE and all the brilliant things that living in this great country we call home represents. We’ve selected 40 fun things that we love – although we could easily have done a lot more – and we’re sure you’ll love them too. One of those things we love is golf. Now, it’s fair to say I’m probably not the world’s biggest golf fan. Yet despite that I genuinely love Topgolf Dubai, the brand new, ridiculously fun entertainment destination that has opened in the city. Not sure what I’m waxing lyrical about? Turn to page 13 for the full lowdown on everything to do with Topgolf and its general awesomeness. Enjoy the issue everyone. Just like the UAE, we love you lots, too.

A TRUE TASTE OF
JAPAN
Miss travelling? Us too. But you don’t have to go to Japan to sample its authentic cuisine
J
apan is a diverse land of culinary pleasures, but sometimes it’s easy to order the same go-to dishes whenever that unagi craving hits. But sushi and ramen aren’t the sole culinary delights from the Land of the Rising Sun. So, to spotlight some of the culture’s lesserknown delicacies, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) has launched Fūdo Nippon, a new campaign to champion distinctive dishes and to showcase the use of traditional Japanese ingredients. Here are six fabulous Japanese restaurants in the UAE ready to help break up your spicy tuna and dynamite roll rut this month…
Kimura-Ya
Kimura-Ya
When: January 18 to 31
Joining The Oberoi’s list of excellent restaurants is Kimura-Ya, a famous Japanese chain with over 200 branches in Japan. Experience its authenticity first-hand with the A5 wagyu shabushabu – Japan’s most popular hot pot of cooked meat and assorted vegetables in a Japanese broth. @kimurayadubai
Kohantei
Bentoya
When: January 18 to 31
Kohantei
When: January 4 to 17
This tiny Japanese restaurant can be found in the Dubai Opera district and offers a fine-dining ‘kaiseki’ experience, which is basically Japan’s answer to a degustation dinner. This month’s special includes a wagyu mille-feuille katsu sando, a delicious cutlet sandwich made of thinly cut layers of A5 grade wagyu beef, all stacked up, deep fired and placed in toasted bread with a secret sauce. kohantei.ae
Fujiya
Fujiya
When: January 4 to 17
Founded by an ex-sumo wrestler, the legendary izakaya-style Fujiya has served quality food fit for wrestlers and non-wrestlers for years. Among its special dishes this month, try the premium wagyu yaki cyanko, a mountain of Japanese wagyu and vegetables cooked right at your table. @fujiya_dubai
Bentoya
Sakura (Ras Al Khaimah)
When: January 4 to 17
Sugar enthusiasts take note: Sakura in Ras Al Khaimah is well worth a visit to sample some of Japan’s most exotic desserts. Highlights include the dorayaki, a delightful pancake sandwich with matcha tea. agrak.net
One of Dubai’s longestserving restaurants has stood the test of time, and for good reason – its sushi is divine. This month, you can sample a selection of unique grilled options such as yellowtail, scallop and vinegar mackerel. facebook.com/bentoyasheikhzayed
Zuma
When: January 18 to 31
This multi-award winning restaurant needs little introduction – its sensational food does all the talking. But its special yuzu cheesecake made with Hokkaido cheese and topped with frozen raspberry bits and black sesame moss is another reason to visit this month. zumarestaurant.com

TOPGOLF
hen planning a night out with your mates, you need a place that’s as unique as your crew. And when the ageold brunch just won’t cut it, sometimes you need to look for something out of the ordinary. Behold, Topgolf Dubai, the new three-storey, 50,000 square foot mega complex that’s finally opened at Emirates Golf Club. It’s a platform high off the ground, with incredible views of an endless night sky, all accented by the glowing hues of bright purple LEDs. The ground below is covered in a green field of artificial turf, and there are screens visible everywhere you turn. There seem to be hundreds of flat screens dotted around the venue, some as small as a tablet, some as wide as a cinema screen. A few show live broadcasts of sports, while others display graphic visuals depicting the final locations of the micro-chipped golf balls people are hitting off the platform. Music reverberates from crisp new speakers on the walls, thumping loud enough to inspire some shouldershuffling and roof-raising, but not so loud as to drown out your conversations. 14_What’s On
This futuristic driving range-cum-bar is also almost inconceivably huge. There are a whopping 96 hitting bays, each with enough chairs and couches and tables to comfortably seat an extended family. There’s a restaurant with a bar behind the bays, and two others on the middle and top floors. If you’ve not heard of Topgolf, it’s the ridiculously fast-growing, family-friendly entertainment destination that already has homes across the US, UK, Australia, Mexico and now the UAE.
It was born in the UK in 2000, created by twin brothers who wanted to make golfing more tech-forward, fun, and engaging. Its microchipped golf balls, interactive target competitions, and climatecontrolled hitting bays mean you don’t have to be a golf pro to enjoy the experience. It’s perfect for any occasion: date night, boys night out, girls night out, birthday parties, office dos, the works. Sure, some of the folks hitting balls towards the giant glowing targets on the ground will have clearly done this before. A few may look like they could hit a hole-in-one at 200 yards. But there are also many people who can barely get out of the way of their own swings. For every golf ball sent soaring in a magnificent arc through the night sky, there’s at least one [ahem, most of team What’s On] that barely dribbles out of the tee box. Regardless of skill level, though, in bay after bay, from one end of this hulking structure to the other, the ‘golfers’ are smiling, wincing and snapping pics for the ‘Gram.

THE FOOD Unlike the sad pizza slices you’d find at a bowling alley or those standard bar buffalo wings, Topgolf ’s chef-inspired menu is no afterthought. Here, platters and signature dishes run the gamut of mezze, sliders, mac and cheese boards, and a jumbo pretzel platter with assorted cold cuts and cheese. That basic club sandwich? It’s been upgraded to a Middle Eastern triple decker with sun-blazed red and yellow peppers, grilled halloumi, lettuce, smoked harissa, hummus and eggs. Flipping through the extensive menu online is almost enough to put you in a food coma on the spot. Most dishes are designed to be shared, further proof that the true sport at Topgolf Dubai is socialising.
NEW TAKE ON AN OLD SPORT For hundreds of years, humans have derived a deep satisfaction from the act of using a stick to hit a ball into a hole. What’s happening at Topgolf Dubai is just a uniquely 21st century take on the ancient sport. Sprinkled across the artificial lawn at Topgolf Dubai is a series of oversize circular targets, just like dart boards only much bigger, that are flat on the ground. Microchips in the balls track how close they come to these targets. Participants can accrue points by hitting the targets – the further and smaller the target, the more points you get. The game, essentially, is a digitised form of golf, and jolly good fun, too. 16_What’s On
FROM VEGAS TO DUBAI
Herman Torres
ET E M
THE NEW F&B DIRECTOR AT TOPGOLF DUBAI
You’re from Topgolf Vegas – that’s cool! How does Dubai’s compare? When we opened in Vegas, no one had seen anything like it, so it had this amazing vibe. For me, Topgolf Dubai is going to set a new benchmark for the Middle East, just like Topgolf Vegas did for the States. We’re going to create this amazing place for the region, so that when anyone thinks about opening another Topgolf, they’ll say “wow we need to be like Topgolf Dubai.” Sports snacks are all burgers and buffalo wings. Does the same apply to Topgolf? Yes, definitely. There was this massive process with our menu. We have a mission to deliver one of the best burgers in Dubai and we’ll definitely succeed. And our head chef is quite special. I can’t wait for everybody to meet him. He’s prepared a menu that I can’t wait for everyone to taste. How many restaurants and bars are there at Topgolf Dubai? We have three different restaurants under the one roof. There’s the Bunker Café next to our mini
Will everything be a calorie bomb? No, no, no. But we will have hearty items. In the States that’s one of the things that we’re known for: ‘make it fast, make it quick, put on my plate so I can gain more weight.’ But in Dubai, we have a lot of fresh items, too. Our chef has created some great salads, some very healthy choices and veggie dishes.
golf area. Then there’s The Yard. This is where everyone is going to go to watch sports and listen to live music. And then we have The Loft on the top floor, which is your afterparty spot. Will the menu be similar to the one in Vegas, or are you changing it up? We have pasta. No other Topgolf on the planet is serving pasta, which is a big deal for us. Then there’s our amazing Arabic mixed grill. I’ve already been told by many people that Topgolf Dubai’s menu will be the most impressive that Topgolf has ever seen, period. Have a look at the menu for yourself here, topgolfdubai.ae/menu.
Tell us about some of your favourite dishes... Being a manly man, my favourite dish is the meat and mac platter. It’s Korean spare ribs accompanied by some chicken and spicy macaroni cheese served with a side of coleslaw. It doesn’t get more American than that. What about drinks? We’ve seen a glass golf bag that looks fun… Oh, the Golf Bag is so fun, and it really creates a party on your table. There are illuminated lights that switch on underneath and it’s such a social drink. We have a shareable one, too, that’s 32oz. When you order the big one, you can take it home. It’s like your own little Topgolf Dubai memorabilia.

JANUARY 13 & 14
JACK Jack Whitehall is fast becoming the posh prince of British comedy, but here’s what you might not know about him…
26_What’s On
C
omedian, actor, and TV presenter Jack Whitehall is a firm favourite in the UK and a rising star in Hollywood. The 31-year-old has already shown off his comic timing in the hit British sitcoms Fresh Meat and Bad Education, and capably covered for the main man on The Graham Norton Show, and now he has roles in Bounty Hunters and Disney’s Jungle Cruise. With his Stood Up tour coming to Dubai on January 13 and 14 as part of Dubai Shopping Festival, here’s the lowdown on the well-connected British multi-hyphenate. At school, Whitehall used to sit next to Robert Pattinson. Whitehall has often joked about their supposed feud, which (allegedly) began when Pattinson kept beating him to the best parts in school plays.
His big TV break came when he hosted Big Brother’s Big Mouth, a spin-off show from the UK version of Big Brother. Whitehall was only 21 when he began presenting the show, following in the footsteps of previous hosts, including Russell Brand and James Corden. He says the worst stage moment he ever had was a comedy gig in front of Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall at Kensington Palace. He made a joke about Prince Harry – “that’s so brave of [Harry] to serve in Afghanistan… a ginger in that heat!” – that, as Whitehall recalled on The Graham Norton Show, didn’t quite get the desired response. “It went down like a dead corgi.”
Photo: Getty Images
ON HIS MUSICAL ABILITIES “I can play recorder to grade level seven. Do you realise how little action you get from playing Frere Jacques? Very little.”
ON CHARITY WORK “I did a bit of charity work once on my gap year. I went and did a bit of volunteer work in a special needs school for children. Just playing games with them, football, tennis. And it does genuinely make you feel really good inside… because you always win.”
“I TOLD EVERYONE I WAS IN THE MOVIE, AND WHEN I WENT TO SEE IT, I GOT TO THE END OF THE MOVIE, AND I WASN’T THERE” Whitehall’s dad Michael, with whom he appears on Travels with My Father, is a TV producer and talent agent. And a very successful one: Michael Whitehall’s past clients include Dame Judi Dench and Colin Firth.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
He played a troll in Frozen... well, sort of. Sadly his sole line was cut. “I told everyone I was in the movie, and when I went to see it, I got to the end of the movie, and I wasn’t there. Every time I watch it, it’s like getting an icy dagger to the heart.”
ON BEING POSH “I’m posh but I don’t take any stick for it. It’s like I always say, ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but nevermind, I’m with Bupa.’”
ON HIS FATHER “I’m sure wherever my father is, he would be looking down on us. He’s not dead… just very condescending.”
ON BULLYING “I bought one of those anti-bullying wristbands when they first came out. I say ‘bought’, I actually stole it off a short, fat ginger kid.”

TAIKO
Is this new Asian contemporary import bang on or a dead beat? un fact: ‘Taiko’ is Japanese for drum. It’s something that becomes quite obvious the moment you walk into the Amsterdam export now taking up residence in Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk. A woman standing at the entrance, dressed in a sort of ancient warrior costume bangs an enormous drum whenever anyone walks in. It’s quite the startling announcement for the rest of the diners who might already be enjoying their meals, but it’s all part of the drama. Looking around, you’ll find a sleek, moody dining space, with decor that is a pleasing mix of contemporary minimalism and Japanese-style touches – including an intricate wood carved wall, bamboo lined booths and tasteful black lacquered hanging lights. The kitchen, under the helm of executive chef Guido, offers an Asian fusion menu that spans sushi, tempura, robata and more, with thoughtful extras that mesh Far East flavours with Middle
F
Eastern ingredients and customs, the likes of which we’ve not seen before. Dishes here flip between the outrageous to the outrageously brilliant. An example of the former was the infused melon (Dhs39) with kimchi and wasabi. Now, we like wasabi as much as the next person, but the green one nearly blew our heads off. By comparison, the edamame hummus (Dhs24) served with homemade seaweed and mushroom crackers was so creamy and heartening that we practically licked the bowl clean.
The hiramasa king fish sashimi (Dhs65) is a dish we found ourselves nodding at admiringly, rather than adoring. There is a powerful depth to the Persian saffron sauce but for us, it’s a little too overbearing. Less is more on this occasion. We are, however, completely enamored with the sushi shisha (try saying that
tongue twister a few times), which arrives at the table in stunning blue and white porcelain containers. When opened, plumes of fruity shisha smoke waft out of the containers to reveal two meaty rectangles: one topped with a generous wagyu slice, the other, a pink-perfect salmon – both flavour profiles elevated thanks to the plummy smoke. Taiko’s take on dynamite wasabi prawns (Dhs75) was another excellent dish, with a golden batter hiding a piping hot prawn and topped with thin and crispy nori. Finally, and courtesy of mind-boggling kitchen culinary gymnastics, we’re served perfect stone imitations, filled with wasabi (thankfully far less pungent than the melon appetiser), and a quirky, but tasty, chocolate mousse with wasabi sauce complete with lucky cat figurine to finish. A novel end to a theatrical meal in every sense. Taiko’s beat is one we’d certainly dance to again. a Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk, Sat, Sun, Tue and Wed 5pm to 1am, Thur and Fri 5pm to 2.30am, closed Mondays. MEET THE BARTENDER
MAURICIO ANDRES GONZALEZ VERA Bartender at Aprons & Hammers My first bartending job was at W Hotel, Bogota. It was love at first pour. I loved meeting guests from all around the world. They’d share their stories, and it made me realise how different we all are. The new Aprons & Hammers Beach House on Palm West Beach is unlike any other Aprons & Hammers outlet. From the logo, location and interior design, to the general ‘Hamptons-meets-Miami’ vibes, it’s the best of both worlds. I’ve learnt to be humble and open to new challenges. Life always teaches you something through every experience, and it’s what you make of it that counts. If I had to pick between an apron or a hammer, I’d choose the hammer. I like to break things. We have a signature drink where guests can have fun with a hammer. It’s called ‘It May Be Blue But It’s The Bomb’, and the big ice bomb contains the drinks, which guests have to break open. What drink goes best with lobster? It would have to be the ‘I Dont Need Friends, I Need Champagne’. It’s a bubbly cocktail infused with peach and lends very well to the succulent, buttery taste of lobster. a Palm West Beach, Palm Jumeirah, open daily noon to midnight. apronsandhammers.com

Palm Bay

Club Vista Mare’s newest bar is bright on colour, bold on personality, and big on weekly deals It’s hard not to love Club Vista Mare. The line of bars and restaurants at the trunk of the Palm has something to suit all tastes, and its venues and promenade are almost always busy with people and their pets. The newest kid on the block is Carribean-themed Palm Bay, which replaced the rowdy Ras Beach bar at the near end of the strip. Since opening back in September 2020, it’s fast become one of the most popular venues. We headed in to find out why. As predicted, the scene is buzzing when we arrive. The wooden pub-style benches on the faux green grass on the terrace are almost all full, mostly with Palm residents enjoying postwork drinks. The staff welcome us with huge smiles and a sort of familiarity that is often lacking in Dubai. Indoors, the décor bursts with colour: there are bright pink sofas next to bold turquise booths, with glowing neon quotes appearing alongside colourful graffiti on the walls. Seating comprises mismatched
furnitures, booths and exposed brick. The menu options are as strong as the décor, with proper pub food such as beer battered fish fingers (Dhs65), a jerk chicken wrap (Dhs65), loaded potato skins (Dhs55) and excellent sliders (from Dhs85). It’s big and brazen food, and reminds us of British pub grub. But Palm Bay’s greatest strength lies in its range of weekly deals and events. Just a quick scan of its website and you’ll see an outrageous number of menus to choose from (we counted 12) including a brunch menu, kid’s menu, breakfast menu and ladies’ night menu. We’re particular fans of its seven-hour happy hour that takes place daily (excluding Friday) from 12pm to 7pm. We’ve also penciled in a trip to its Wednesday night quiz, too, which costs Dhs150 and includes two dishes and two drinks from 8pm. BRIX DESSERT BAR Is five courses of sweets too much of a good thing?
f you don’t finish your dinner, there’ll be no dessert,” is a phrase we all heard on repeat when we were growing up. Little did we know there would come a time when we could skip the savoury and go straight to the sweet stuff. Brix is the stuff of your childhood dreams – and yet the Dubai dessert bar is also decidedly grown-up. For starters, there’s the tucked-away location in Jumeirah Fishing Village, just by its sibling restaurant 3Fils, which feels like a secret in itself. Then, there’s the sleek interiors of this tiny 10-seat bar. Decked out in marble and stainless steel, it wouldn’t look out of place in a luxe Downtown lounge. And finally, there are the desserts themselves, which are far more nuanced (and far less sweet) than you’d expect. We’ve come to try the Brix five-course tasting menu with matching drinks and, expecting a heavy night ahead, we’ve skipped dinner completely. Once we take our seats at the dessert bar, the staff set to work preparing the first dish right in front of us. The creation called ‘liquid’ is served in a petite martini glass, and features an Earl Grey ‘pearl’ in a delicate peach liquor – the spherified pearl pops the moment it hits our tongue. The next dish is dubbed ‘smell’ and is presented with a diffuser filled with black coffee, which we’re instructed to sniff as we taste the cloud-like combination of guava foam and coconut meringue. It’s a trip, tasting heavily of coffee while you’re inhaling, and of the light tropical flavours when you draw the diffuser away.

‘Grain’ comes next, combining tart gooseberry jam, a rubble of caramelised sand pebbles, a quenelle of almond ice cream, and a tuille tube filled with almond mousse, gooseberry and raisin jam. Creamy, crunchy and grainy textures combine with earthy, nutty flavours. To drink, a ‘clean colada’ of separated pineapple, coconut and cream that’s crystal clear. The following dish, called ‘fat’, divides our table, with its bold pairing of mascarpone, laban, wakame oil, black olive and crunchy rice crisp. To cleanse the palate, it’s followed by a salty-sweet drink of plum and tomato. There are more savoury-meetssweet adventures to be had, with the ‘chlorophyll’ dish that wouldn’t look out
of place in the starters or salad section of a restaurant. Gunpowder jelly, pineapple and celery sorbet, a shiso leaf, curls of green apple, shiso-pea soup, and a smattering of green peas bring vegetal flavours to the floor. The final dessert of the night will hit chocolate lovers right in their sweet spot. Ce la vie is an intensely flavoured dessert, with a molten chocolate cake, truffle and hazelnuts. It’s rich and utterly indulgent. LDC KITCHEN AND COFFEE
London Dairy Cafe gets a reboot in JLT est known for its ice-cream tubs and dependable (if not exactly groundbreaking) cafe fare, London Dairy Cafe has been rebooted, with the launch of LDC Kitchen and Coffee in One JLT. If it weren’t for the acronym, you might not even know this was London Dairy Mark II. Flamingo Room, Zuma and La Serre to the fore. London Dairy has always taken an ‘everything-but-the-kitchensink’ approach to menu design, and that breadth remains at LDC, albeit in a more finely honed format. Basiony has cherry-picked dishes from across the world, taking you from relaxed cafe breakfasts to restaurant-quality dinners. On our visit, standouts include the stellar squid-ink linguine with garlic prawns (Dhs65); the sinfully good Vesuvio fried pizza (Dhs60); and a rich ramen with chicken, sweetcorn, and properly al dente noodles (Dhs65). Come hungry if you plan on tackling the aptly named Hot Mess burger (Dhs90). With two mac ‘n’ cheese patties standing in for the bun, a double serve of beef, and bacon jam, this is a dish with serious heft. The scope of LDC’s menu is even more impressive when you learn that everything
– right down to the croissants, sausages and cakes – is made in-house. There’s also quality coffee sourced direct from farmers, and a friendly team led by Florencia Beschtedt (ex-Zuma GM). And this is just the start for LDC. Over the coming months, the new menu and decor will be rolled out at London Dairy Cafe venues across Dubai, bringing this dependable brand bang up to date. a One JLT, daily 7am to midnight (open until 1am on weekends). @ldckitchen RATING Food B Atmosphere Casual Price

DAYCATION // REVIEW
The perfect daycation?
Hello private lagoon view hotel room with full-stocked mini mega bar…
T
he pool daycation is looking a bit different in 2021 thanks to Park Hyatt Dubai. The traditional day club image of baking out in the sun, sipping watered down concoctions, and crowding around a pool in ‘nightclubs by the water’ is not everyone’s cup of tea these days. So Park Hyatt Dubai has toned down the thumping party vibes in favour of a luxurious, more intimate affair. The new Lagoon Beach Experience daycation grants you access to the glorious 100-metre-long infinity pool at the resort, but most importantly, you and your friends can also make use of

the newly renovated groundlevel lagoon rooms, which you’ll have full access to from 10am to 7pm. That’s not all. Inside your room (each one named after a Mediterranean town), you’ll find your own in-room bar, the countertops filled with all the neat little cocktail-making gadgets necessary to create your own drinks throughout the day. The double-door ‘mini’ bar comes fully stocked with beers, soft drinks, and cute little bottles of negroni, which are all included in the package. On the shelves above are a selection of premium spirits,
which are an additional charge. Each room comes with its own private patio and sun loungers just steps away from the lagoon, but private enough so you and your friends can feel secluded. It’s a wonderful spot to enjoy a delicious lunch. We scoffed a margarita pizza, sweet potato fries, regular fries, some calamari and a Caesar salad, which came to less than Dhs500. Ideal since each daycation includes Dhs500 credit to spend on food. A final round of cocktails will be delivered to your room as dusk hits – the perfect accompaniment to watch the sun set over the Creek. Then you can shower in your room before getting ready for a night out. This is a proper daycation vacation, and one that’ll be hard to top. Prices start at Dhs2,225 per room for 4 people on weekdays, Dhs3,050 for 4 people on weekends. New year, new laughs Beat the January blues at The Laughter Factory this month
W
hen the dust has settled on the festive season and the work routine starts again, there’s nothing like a laugh to keep your spirits up. The Laughter Factory is just the tonic, returning this month. Compere extraordinaire, Stephen Grant is the winner of several of the UK’s compere awards, and never fails to blow away his audiences with his witty examination of almost everything. Meanwhile The Laughter Factory royalty, John Fothergill, is a regular and the undisputed king of inappropriate. Rounding out the trio, and making her debut on The Laughter Factory is Ester Manito. The Arab Essex girl talks feminism, relationships and her quest to control her body hair...
How would you describe yourself? Looks wise: tall and hairy. Personality: Loud. How would others describe you? I think the same as above. Hopefully they would add funny, although if they are related to me they probably wouldn’t. What was your first standup gig like? I was so nervous I threw up. I never planned to do standup so it was a real shock to my family and friends. I had kept it a secret at first, scuttling out to perform. Being on stage took a bit of getting used to.

2021RELEASES PREVIEW NEW
No Time to Die
Blockbusters in 2021
S
o, the second half of 2020 didn’t quite follow the cinematic release schedule we were all hoping for. But that’s OK, we’re just about over it. It does, however, mean that 2021 is looking like a CGI tsunami of movie magic, a hulking Death Star filled to the thermal exhaust ports with original screenplay adaptations, long-awaited sequels and childhood-tarnishing reboots that nobody asked for, but we’ll probably all still watch.
54_What’s On
THIS IS OUR TOP PICK OF WHAT’S COMING SOON(ISH) THE LAST DUEL EXPECTED: JANUARY 2021
The Last Duel
Ridley Scott is about to enter a sixth decade of making movies, and his cinematic CV looks set to echo in eternity. He was the helmsman for Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, American Gangster and The Martian. So there’s an understandable ripple of excitement whenever new Ridley Scott projects are announced. The concept of
‘duels’ has been a reocurring theme in Scott’s movies, but the name of his latest one, The Last Duel, bears a noteworthy resemblance to his 1977 Cannes Film Festival best debut-winning piece The Duellists. We know this feature is based on a book, The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager. We know the screenplay was written by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and
Nicole Holofcener (and also stars Affleck and Damon). But are we ready to get emotionally attached to the idea of this release coming out in January despite the lack of trailer? Not yet, not yet.
GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE EXPECTED: MARCH 2021
Let’s be clear, we did not hate the female-led 2016 reboot of the classic sci-fi comedy, Ghostbusters. We laughed. That being said, the fact that this 2021 movie is a straight sequel to the two original 1980s Ghostbusters films, has got us dribbling a little bit of anticipatory ectoplasm. It has some strong spirit DNA — a cast featuring the vampirically youthful Paul Rudd and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), retro gadgets, rumours of role
No Time to Die
reprisals and a trailer that teases Zuul-esque appendages. But will it all get messy with two separate timelines and a sequel dropping after more than 30 years? Not if you follow Egon’s
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
THE MATRIX 4 EXPECTED: DECEMBER 2021
The first Matrix movie was a watershed moment in cinema, an evolutionary leap in CGI and visual storytelling. It was, in our opinion, a masterpiece. And we are heartened by the fact that the temptation to cash-in on the billion-dollar-grossing franchise was resisted until a suitable script was produced. This time around the film is being directed by a single Wachowski
first rule of Ghostbuster club: Never cross the streams.
NO TIME TO DIE EXPECTED: APRIL 2021
Daniel Craig is set to return to our screens in 2021 for a fifth and final (or so we’re told) time as James Bond. There’s been a storm of intrigue and controversy over his potential successor, and even with the tantalising news that Lashana Lynch will play ‘the new 007’, there’s no clarity on whether this will be a permanent fixture. What we know for certain is, that the director for this entry into
the franchise, is Cary Joji Fukunaga — the man behind the first season of True Detective, arguably one of the finest bits of television in the modern era. According to our intelligence sources, this movie begins with Bond (Craig) out of active service, only to be lured back by long-time friend and CIA agent, Felix Leiter in a search for a missing scientist. In the trailer we get a brief glimpse of Rami Malek as the movie’s socially-awkward antagonist, alongside Christoph Waltz, the OG Dr Evil, Ernst Blofeld, *Raises pinky finger*.
(Lana). There’s been an impressive lack of plot leak information for Matrix 4, but diving into the casting — we can muse on directions the film might take. The two leads from the original trilogy, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, are confirmed as returning, despite *spoiler* having died at the end of the last movie. It seems highly likely that this film will either play with timelines or serve as direct prequel, perhaps set in one of the earlier versions of the Matrix. We can’t wait.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
TOP GUN: MAVERICK EXPECTED: JULY 2021
On initial inspection, this movie has some worrying pockets of potential turbulence. It’s a sequel arriving a full three and a half decades after the original, its main star is now nearly 60 (although still somehow manages to look like an Athenian carving), and the trailer teases sections of
dialogue that are so spinetingling corny you could pop them in a kettle and serve them in a concessions stand. You might say, this movie has no business in being great. But on paper, neither did the original. Of course we’re going to watch it, and of course we’ll revel in its retrokitsch, nostalgic fromagerie. Weapons hot, it’s time to buzz the tower for one last run. It’s what Goose would have wanted.
SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS EXPECTED: JULY 2021
Perhaps the most exciting thing about this comic book adaption is that it will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie to feature an Asian lead, Simu Liu as the titular character Shang-Chi. The story will likely draw from Marvel’s Secret Wars comic book saga,
where Master of Kung Fu: Shang-Chi faces off against the Mandarin and his Ten Rings organisation. In the comics, the name Ten Rings actually comes from a set of alien-manufactured finger bling, and we all know how devastating extra-terrestrial jewellery can be in the MCU. Hilarious Crazy Rich Asians star, Awkwafina, is also attached to the project, which wrapped up production in October in an undisclosed role.
DUNE EXPECTED: OCTOBER 2021
Top Gun: Maverick
56_What’s On
Dune
This philosophical sci-fi caper is director Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of the classic Frank Herbert science fiction novel of the same name and serves as a reboot to the popular 1984 movie. The cast of this version is headed up by the brilliant, and deliciously emo
Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, and Jason Momoa. The story follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a young man thrust into a power struggle on the distant planet of Arrakis, home to giant murderous sand worms, scheming ne’er-do-wells, indigenous eco-warriors and a battleground for control of the galaxy’s most precious resource, a performance-
pandemic PTSD talking. The series of games on which Uncharted is based, are probably some of the deepest, most nuanced narratives in the medium. And there’s the fact that the cast includes everyone’s favourite loose-lipped Spidey, Tom Holland next to Bostonian Funky Buncher (look it up Gen Z) Mark Whalberg.
THE ETERNALS EXPECTED: NOVEMBER 2021
Uncharted
enhancing ‘spice’ called Melange. Bit of local movie trivia for you – part of the movie was actually shot here in Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter.
UNCHARTED EXPECTED: OCTOBER 2021
Nobody needs reminding that movies based on video games have the reputation of being almost universally terrible. But as a measure of just how bad they tend to be, Rotten Tomatoes recently ran a ‘worst to best’ list of 43 computer game adaptations, the celluloidal pinnacle of which, was Angry Birds 2. We jest not. Still, hope springs eternal, and there are some hard reasons why we should be hopeful that this movie could set a new precedent. Although that could equally just be the
First of all, a standing ovation is owed to Marvel for sitting Chloe Zhao in the director’s chair. We can’t wait to see what the storysmith behind Nomadland and The Rider does with a comic book space odyssey. In Marvel lore, The Eternals are an immortal alien race whose guiding hand was instrumental in shaping human development on earth. Having a whole movie devoted to them right at the opening of MCU Phase Four, opens up the possibility of a genuinely thrilling trajectory for the series storyline. The cast is pretty impressive, too,
Mission Impossible 7
with Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani and a Game of Thrones set reunion for Winterfell’s most famous sons, Richard Madden and Kit Harington.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7 EXPECTED: NOVEMBER 2021
Would you believe it? The world has gone and gotten itself into apocalyptic peril once more, and with millennials seemingly unwilling to do anything about it, it’s down to ‘OK boomer’ Tom Cruise to sort
it out. Again. The Mission Impossible series of films has been a bit hit and miss, but at it’s best it’s the genre crème of big-screen action. And it’s currently on a bit of a hot streak – Rogue Nation and Fallout were both strong movies with box office receipts to match. Plot details on number seven are non-existant but we know that Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Esai Morales are joining the cast. This is just one of two upcoming MI movies currently in the pipeline, with an eighth installment slated for 2022.

Six super hammams Regenerate your skin with a soapy scrub at one of these fabulous hammams
62_What’s On
01
The Moroccan One Make sure you walk from the entrance of the One&Only Royal Mirage to the spa, because a stroll through the lush gardens, alive with all manner of birds, is a calming experience. The hammam itself, filled with the sound of trickling water and decorated with ornate tiles, Arabic inspired trinkets, including a chessboard, and several yellow-lit jacuzzis, is also fully equipped for relaxation. The Royal Hammam treatment started with being lathered in Moroccan black soap, made of olives – we could actually see pieces of olive skin in it – before spending five minutes in the steam room massaging your soapy limbs. The suds were washed off, before we were taken to a warm slab for a good scrubbing. We were then covered in eucalyptus scented Ghassoul clay, wrapped in a sheet and given a honey facial and then a massage. The royal treatment indeed. The Royal Hammam Cost: Dh610 Length: 80 minutes a One&Only Royal Mirage, Dubai. Tel: (04) 3999999. royalmirage. oneandonlyresorts.com

The Dead Sea One Fittingly for the world’s tallest hotel, the JW Marriott Marquis’ Saray Spa is enormous. It has 15 treatment rooms, including two private hammam rooms. Floating in the real Dead Sea is perfectly suited to lazy people and the Dead Sea hammam treatment at Saray Spa follows suit. We were escorted to into one of the gorgeous dark blue hammam rooms where our therapist covered us in olive oil and salt soap, before taking us into a very steamy room and leaving us to poach for about 15 minutes. Then back into the hammam, the soap was washed off with buckets of water, we’re scrubbed, then covered in mud. Caution: it can be a bit stingy. Our hair was washed as we let the mud work its way into our skin. Once that had been rinsed away (finishing off with two buckets of refreshing cold water), we had a delightful oil massage in the cooler climes of a private treatment room. The Ottoman One You could easily spend the whole day at the opulent Talise Spa, slipping between hot and cold pools, snow rooms and saunas, and nibbling dates behind the curtains of cushioned alcoves. When it comes time for your hammam session, you’ll be led into the sumptuous communal room, a steamy, dreamy space of marble and mosaic. Leave your modesty at the door as you lie down on the heated marble platform, along with up to three other people. Your therapist will then pour jugs of hot water all over you, before getting straight down to business with the kese mitt. Once thoroughly scrubbed, you’re enveloped from the chin down in a foamy cloud of bubbles, followed by a slippery full-body massage and a hair wash, before being slathered in lavender honey. Bliss. The Sophisticated One The Sofitel Spa’s private hammam is a sleek, three-zone space lined with warm black stone. The first stage of the Royal Hammam treatment begins in the steam room, where you’re covered in black olive soap, then left to marinate for five minutes. Then, you’re taken to the next space, where a huge oval slab of heated stone sits centre stage. Choose from a gentle kesa mitt for sensitive skin, or the regular mitt, which will effectively do away with your top layer of epidermis. After the scrub, your freshly exposed 64_What’s On
skin will be soothed with a white clay and olive oil masque. And while that soaks in, you’ll have your hair gently shampooed and conditioned. Before you get too comfortable, the final step is to have a bucket of cold water dumped over your head. It’s an invigorating, bracing treatment that quite literally reveals a new you… or a new epidermis at least. Signature Royal Hammam Cost: Dhs578 Length: 60 minutes a Sofitel Dubai Downtown. The Modern One While the majority of Sofitel The Obelisk takes on an ancient Egypt theme, the Sofitel Spa with L’Occitane has a contrasting design. Its hammam moves away from the traditional, and brings it into the 21st century. The central bed has colourful lights glowing from within and the room is filled with steam, creating a discotheque effect. After being hosed down with a shower tap, we start with a coarse scrub to remove all the dead skin. This process is followed by a nourishing mask, which is left on for 15 minutes. All of the products used in the treatment are L’Occitane so it feels luxurious and everything smells fresh and energising. You can choose between a 60-minute treatment for Dhs540 or 90 minutes for Dhs810. Hammam Ritual Blanc Cost: Dhs810 Length: 90 minutes a Sofitel Spa with L’Occitane, Sofitel The Obelisk, Wafi, Dubai. The Stress-Relieving One For the most indulgent of relaxation experiences, the Turkish Hammam treatment at Anantara, The Palm ticks all of the boxes. It takes place inside an ornate room with a warm stone hexagonal island to lie on. Our hair is gently washed and faces cleaned, then we’re treated to an invigorating all-over body scrub to buff away dead skin. Next up, what we can only describe as a spa’s answer to a pillowcase, filled with soapy suds, is stroked over us, feather-light, before the suds are poured over head-to-toe. As if we couldn’t be relaxed enough, a full-body massage eases the last remnants of tension. A final warm water drench washes the last suds away, before a refreshing blast of cooler water to close the pores. Once dry, moisturiser is applied to the body and face and we walk away in a citrussy haze. The Turkish Hammam Cost: Dhs630 Length: 60 minutes a Anantara Spa, Anantara, The Palm, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai. 01 IRANIAN MOSQUE, BUR DUBAI Not too many people know about this beautiful mosque, but you might be lucky enough to stumble upon it while wandering around the area near the Textile Souk. Also known as the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque, the building is adorned with intricate blue tiles. It’s one of two ornately decorated Iranian mosques in Dubai – the other, Imam Hussein Mosque, is located in Satwa.
03 SNOOPY ISLAND, FUJAIRAH Named after the cartoon dog, which the island is said to resemble in shape, Snoopy Island is a marine paradise offering some of the best snorkeling in the GCC. Turtles, fish every colour of the rainbow, and even little white-tip reef sharks have made this sparkling cerulean sea their home.
02 RAS AL KHOR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY It might look like something out of an African safari, but the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is located just a few minutes’ drive from Dubai Mall. More than 20,000 birds of 67 species inhabit the area, which is most famous for its magnificent flock of flamingos. To see them, head to one of three viewing hides dotted around the perimeter of the sanctuary. These are open from 9am to 4pm Saturday to Thursday, and entrance is free (there are binoculars available to borrow, too). What’s On_67

UAE SURPRISES
04 AL WATHBA FOSSIL DUNES, ABU DHABI They may be just a 30-minute drive from downtown Abu Dhabi, but these twisting, wind-swept rock formations feel worlds away from the capital. Take the Al Ain truck road and the E30, then head south of Al Wathba Wetland Reserve.
05 AL AIN OASIS Al Ain Oasis had the honour of becoming the UAE’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 2011. Spread over 3,000 acres, the oasis is one of the world’s oldest permanently inhabited settlements, dating back more than 4,000 years. You can wander through its tranquil pathways, with more than 147,000 date palm trees providing a lovely green canopy. 68_What’s On
06 MOON ISLAND, DUBAI Not to be confused with Abu Dhabi’s Moon Island Resort, this tiny sliver of sand is located 50 kilometres off the coast of Dubai. You’ll need a boat to reach this moonshaped sandbar – where, swimming, sunbathing and fishing await – but the view’s even better if you can capture it from above.
07 JEBEL HAFEET, AL AIN Abu Dhabi’s highest peak at 1,240 metres, you’ll find the “empty mountain” as it’s called in Arabic in Al Ain. Its winding turns make it a great road to drive up, and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views at the top. At its base are ancient burial tombs that date back an incredible 5,000 years.

AL WATHBA WETLAND RESERVE, ABU DHABI
MASFOUT, AJMAN
About a 45-minute drive from Abu Dhabi is the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, a five-square-kilometre area of water bodies, salt flats and dunes. Its star attraction is flamingos – the birds bred there for the first time in 1998, and the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan established the reserve as a protected area.
09 STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, RAS AL KHAIMAH
A 90-minute drive from the centre of Ajman, this tiny enclave is located in the rugged Hajar Mountains, flanked by Hatta, Ras Al Khaimah and Oman. It’s an off-the-beatentrack favourite for hiking and mountain biking – and the old fort is particularly photogenic. If you’re not a GCC national, be sure to take the SharjahKalba Road, as this avoids the Oman border crossing.
Did you know that Ras Al Khaimah is home to a Stairway To Heaven? The breathtaking mountain trail, located in Wadi Ghalilah near the Oman border, is not for the fainthearted – only experienced climbers should attempt it – but making it up the 1,900 metres to the top will not only score you an epic photo, but some serious bragging rights. WIN! DHS1,000 PINSANITY CODE It’s the ideal comfort food for many of us, but with that moment of self-indulgence can come a whole load of extra calories. Enter Pinsanity, the cool home-grown concept that promises you all of the great taste, hearty toppings and happy smiles of a regular pizza, but with far fewer calories. How? Well, ‘pinsa’ (a concept that originated in Rome, centuries ago) is made with more water and less salt than normal pizzas, giving it a lighter base. The dough is stretched out to a more manageable oval shape and
wood-fired to give them that authentic Italian taste and light crunch – leaving you fully satisfied with a fraction of the guilt. Try it for yourself, with this epic Pinsanity prize. The winner receives a code for Dhs1,000 to spend over 60 days. Each order will be capped at Dhs150. After some quick maths, we’ve calculated that you’ll get to enjoy a pinsa party every week for two months.

L A S TMINUTE TRIP Pet-friendly Vida Emirates Hills is the epitome of a boutique hotel, trading giltedged luxury for warm, neighbourly service
View out across Emirates Golf Club
The location When family comes to town (or you just want a low-key staycation), Vida Emirates Hills is a charming – competitively-priced – base for exploring Dubai’s south side. It’s just a stone’s throw from Media City, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Emirates Golf Course and Sheikh Zayed Road. And there’s never any traffic to get in and out of, which is a huge bonus in Dubai.
Origins
The look and feel Vida hotels have a certain aesthetic that mixes modern styling with coastal chic decor. Similar to its sister hotels in Creek Harbour and Downtown Dubai, the Emirates Hills location feels bright and spacious, and there’s a pleasant aroma of cinnamon wafting through its lobby and halls. There’s also a strong community aspect to the hotel that’s unique, largely thanks to the many long-stay residents (both two- and four-legged), who have transformed the once muted hotel into a fun and lively locale.
The facilities Most of the hotel’s celebrated facilities are outside on the enormous terrace. There’s the infinity pool overlooking the golf course, a large deck often used for community yoga classes, and there’s even a little dog park next to Junipers bar. For long stay guests, there’s a cool common area with a kitchen, communal dining area, and movie room. Guests are also welcome to borrow bicycles to cycle around the neighbourhood. 74_What’s On
