DUBAI, I HOPE YOU’RE HUNGRY

Hungry for newness. Hungry for the city to step it up a notch. Hungry for Dubai’s best new plates. That’s exactly what you’ll find in these pages. Because after the summer lull, September is here, and the city is back in business.

As that temperature dial starts to edge down degree by degree, Dubai’s gears move up. And we’re accelerating into fifth gear when it comes to new openings this season. Between now and the end of the year, near 50 new restaurants will make their mark on the city’s burgeoning F&B scene. They come from well-versed operators already in the market, like Rikas, Fundamental Hospitality, Bulldozer, and Atelier House, all promising fresh flavours, diverse cuisines and unique concepts across town. But there’s also plenty of newcomers to get excited for. On Bluewaters, London-born crazy golf concept Swingers opens imminently. The Lana, Dorchester Collection’s Middle Eastern debut, gets three new reasons to visit with the openings of China Tang, Frou Frou, and Dragonfly. And the hotly anticipated J1 Beach will start to welcome visitors from this month, inviting you to discover no less than 13 bars, restaurants and beach clubs once at full capacity. Your next reservations await on p16.

And if you’re feeling the post-summer holiday pinch, fear not. We’ve rounded up brilliant things to do in the city of gold that won’t break the bank. In fact, all of them will set you back less than Dhs75. So whether you’re looking to get back to alfresco pursuits, or you’re still keeping things indoors, your budget friendly Dubai guide awaits on p25.

Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON

Adding

to my bucket list meals at...

RSVP

I confess, I’ve not spent much time at Boxpark. But that’s set to change now I’ve dined at RSVP. This chic French restaurant has bags of style and a menu full of classic Mediterraneaninfluenced dishes. Order the escargot with extra bread on the side for mopping up the garlic butter. For dessert, it’s got to be the raspberry crème brûlée – so good, there’s no judgement if you don’t share. @rsvprestaurant

Looking after my locks with… Casa Aire Wellness

I have curly hair and it’s possibly in the worst shape it’s ever been in. So I took my hair care to the next level and tried the new Korean head spa, Casa Aire. After the treatment, my therapist suggested I use a rosemary spray to help mitigate hair loss. I am glad I did because I’ve already noticed a difference.

Don’t knock it ‘til you try it at…

High Joint

What if I told you that Biscoff Lotus spread and cookie crumbs work as a burger topping? Too much sun right? Wrong. Homegrown bun heroes, High Joint’s new burger is exactly that. The crunch of the Biscoff cookie combined with the charred edge of the patty, the sweet and salty combo – just tastes incredible. All I’ll say is “don’t knock it ‘til you try it.” @high.joint

Counting my blessings at… Coterie

With escalating violence in the region – riots across the globe, and our privileged distance from it all, feelings of guilt are a background default. They can be useful though, a stir for action, or just a reminder to put your phone down and hug your family that little bit tighter. My vote for where – a wholesome Sunday roast at Coterie (get the lamb) – filled with love, laughter, gallons of gravy and yes, also guilt. @the.coterie.group

Keeping it cool with… Pinaud Clubman

L’Occitane Café

L’Occitane Café is my pick for a cheeky lunch date. The mushroom risotto, the kale and quinoa salad, the sea bass, the gnocchi and the truffle pizza – everything is delicious, the ambience is fresh and lively and it’s time well spent. Bonus for being surrounded by the wonderful sights and smells of the L’Occitane Café products.

Whether you’ve nicked yourself shaving or just want to head out the door feeling fresh as a daisy. If you’re willing to drop the designer names, Pinaud Clubman’s aftershave is just Dhs50 for 177ml and full of citrus and spice notes with a sweet undertone. It’s from a simpler time when karate, push-ups and a carton of chocolate milk meant you got your workout and protein shake in. clubman.com

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Amelie Hua

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and hidden gems. This month, we chat to Amelie Hua, CEO and founder of MOTION Cycling (@motion_cycling). After living in Dubai for eight years, she shares some of her top spots that you need on your radar.

My favourite staycation is Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa. I love the suites with the private pools overlooking the stunning view of the desert; a little oasis in the middle of this arid landscape. Outside of Dubai, another one of my favourites is the Kingfisher Retreat in Kalba. @almaha_resort, @kingfisherretreat

Rather than a bar or nightclub, I tend to prefer the restaurants with a dedicated bar area where you feel more comfortable having a drink and catching up. Zuma, BB Social Dining, and Eugene Eugene are my go-to spots for relaxed drinks. My favourite drink is a passionfruit daquiri. @zumadubai, @eugeneeugenedubai, @bbdifc

@mimikakushi

@nasabdubai

My friend recently took me to Nasab for breakfast. It’s a community space with a pool, a co-working area, a restaurant, a coffee shop and other facilities. You can stay the whole day to work and relax at the same time, or you can come during the weekend with kids.

Restaurants in Dubai are a lot different to back home in Paris where I’d usually seek out a chill, family restaurant. Here, they’re a lot fancier and more sophisticated. My favourite spot is Mimi Kakushi. I love the place, the food and the people there. It never disappoints.

It’s been a while since I discovered a new hidden gem in Dubai but I like to go to Al Khazzan Park; there is a little coffee shop called The Barn and a restaurant called HAPI. I like to sit there to work or read a book when the weather is nice. When I have more time, I go out of Dubai to the Desert Palm Polo club, and I have an aperitif there watching the sunset on the Polo field, it’s beautiful.

@thebarnberlin.uae, @hapi.ae, @desertpalmpolo

Am I allowed to say MOTION? If I want to switch off, honestly, I just head to the dark candlelit room to disconnect. It’s not exactly relaxing but you are sure to think about something else for the 45 minutes.

@motion_cycling

September has always marked the changing of the season in the UAE. We say goodbye to blistering heat and slow days, replacing them with an action-packed events calendar and breezy temperatures that accentuate how wonderful the alfresco season is. In September, the emirates accelerate into top gear, unveiling new hotels, restaurants, and sometimes entire neighbourhoods set to offer something new and unique to the tourists that flood back in.

In September 2008, one opening eclipsed all others. With a price tag of USD1.5billion, its very own waterpark, and a 2,000-strong opening party guest list that included Kylie Minogue, Robert DeNiro, and Sir Richard Branson, Atlantis, The Palm became not just Dubai’s, but the world’s most talked about hotel. The figures were eyewatering: 500,000 cubic metres of concrete used in construction, 1,500 rooms, 65,000 aquatic animals, Dhs92,000 the opening rate for the Royal Bridge suite… the list went on. It was a truly magnificent icon. Although, it cut a somewhat lonely figure as one of the only buildings on Palm Jumeirah at that time. But it wasn’t long until the Palm’s crescent was lined with luxury hotels, with Anantara, Jumeirah, One&Only, Waldorf Astoria, Sofitel, Rixos and more all making their mark on this renowned stretch of prime Dubai beachfront. More recently, it’s been thrust back into the spotlight with the arrival of Atlantis The Royal in February 2023, another visual show-stopper that debuted with a performance by Beyoncé, an A-list guestlist, and a dazzling fireworks display.

What both Atlantis hotels have in common is their focus on gourmet dining. Between them, some 35 restaurants operate

– and there are more on the way. Coming later this year to Atlantis, The Palm will be a duo of restaurants from star chef Björn Frantzén: FZN will be an intimate 25-seater fine dining experience; while Studio Frantzen promises to be a luxurious yet relaxed concept with Nordic influences. And they’re just two of the exciting new restaurants to sink your teeth into across the emirates in the coming months. In Dubai, you’ll find the 25 tables you’ll want to reserve in our cover story from p16. In Abu Dhabi, our more modest edit of four exciting new arrivals on the foodie scene can be found on p38. Bon Appétit.

La Baia by the Beach

HOMEGROWN

Timbuktu Market

An exciting addition to Dubai’s foodie scene, Timbuktu Market is set to debut this October in Two Towers, Barsha Heights. Inspired by London’s Borough Market, this two-storey street food venue will feature a mix of homegrown and international eateries, communal seating, a coffee shop, Motion Cycling fitness studio, and shops selling local produce. The line-up includes Dubai supper club sensations Panamericana, Haya’s Kitchen, and Moreish by K; local hidden gems Asian Street by Thai and neo-Filipino street food Kalye Juan; as well as renowned international concepts such as Gyoza Guys, McFly’s Chicken, Churros Garcia, and Sushi Amemiya. Sufret Maryam

Chef and owner Salam Dakkak garnered herself a following with her family-style cooking and authentic Middle Eastern flavours, served at her JLT restaurant, Bait Maryam, since 2017. Now, Dubai foodies have another chance to sample chef Salam’s soul-warming Levantine dishes with the opening of her first upscale concept, Sufret Maryam. Newly opened in Wasl 51, Sufret Maryam serves elevated Levantine cuisine in a space where Palestinian heritage and modern design combine.

Girl and the Goose

A notable figure in Dubai’s homegrown food scene is former-cabin-crew-turned-selftaught-chef, Gabriela Chamorro. Chef Gabriela saw her childhood dream come true when she began her underground dining experience, Girl and the Goose, inside her JBR apartment, four years ago. Since then, it’s become a supper club sensation with a cult following and an ever-growing waitlist. So much so, the Nicaraguan chef is now opening a permanent, licensed, restaurant in Business Bay, in partnership with Rosy Hospitality (the team behind Couqley). Girl and the Goose, Business Bay, Dubai. @girl.and.the.goose

Gerbou

Set to open later this year in Nad Al Sheba is Gerbou, a sustainable, homegrown restaurant that celebrates Emirati cuisine and culture.

Gerbou, which means welcome to my humble abode in Arabic, will see Atelier House Hospitality join forces with Tashkeel, a beloved beacon of arts and culture in the UAE.

Housed in a renovated building from 1987, the restaurant will offer both indoor and outdoor seating, with all spaces designed by Kristina Zanic Consultants. On the terrace, Ghaf trees will offer dappled shade for those dining alfresco during the day. Mirroring the look and feel, the menu promises to be a flight through Arab and Emirati flavours, with locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients taking centre stage.

Gerbou, Nad Al Sheba. @gerbou

This, however, is demonstrably not the case. You don’t need a trust fund to live like a sultan in Dubai, you just need to know where to allocate your resources. This is our investment portfolio of the best budget-friendly activities in Dubai, that’ll cost you Dhs75 or less.

What’s

On meets the extraordinary singing sensations behind Dubai’s most beloved dinner shows

Azza Kamaria

The power vocalist, and artistic director at hit new live music venue Aretha

What do you think sets Aretha apart from other dinner-show concepts?

Aretha is entirely music-oriented, paying tribute to the art of music itself. The entire venue, from the stage to the sound system and lighting, is designed to enhance the performers’ experience. We prioritise high musical standards above all else. While we appreciate impressive acrobatics, you won’t find them here – our focus remains on delivering an unparalleled musical experience.

What is your favourite part about being a performer at Aretha?

Performing at Aretha allows us to sing alongside some of the most incredible voices we’ve ever heard. Talent and vocal ability are the core of Aretha’s identity. We have a blast on stage, breaking the barrier between the audience and the performers by engaging directly with the crowd and sharing our energy. Additionally, each artist contributes to the venue’s ambiance, from selecting scents to choosing art pieces in the

bathroom, making the space truly our own.

Do you have a favourite moment in the entire show?

While we cherish every part of the show, the song “Blessings” holds a special place in our hearts. It’s the only song where we all sing the same note simultaneously, creating a choir-like effect. The song’s message about manifesting positivity and great things in life resonates deeply with us. It’s like a collective prayer for ourselves and our audience, giving us chills every time.

What’s your go-to in-the-shower song?

R-E-S-P-E-C-T, of course!

Random fact about you?

We’ve all been friends for five to 10 years, having met at a piano bar in Paris. This year, we’re excited to welcome more new talent into our little family.

Hear the Aretha singers – Azza, Gigi, Imelda, Thomas and Natali – perform on stage every Wed to Sun 8pm to 3am. @arethadubai

Sebastien Angius

X Factor France winner and Entertainment Director at Josette

How would you describe your show?

It’s an enchanting blend of music, dance, and theatrical performance, where the essence of French music seamlessly merges with international rhythms.

What is your favourite part about being a performer at Josette?

The energy and connection with the Josette audience are unparalleled. We have loyal guests who visit multiple times, truly engaging with me, the artists and the ambiance.

Do you have a favourite moment in the entire show?

The grand finale always gives me chills.

What’s your go-to in-the-shower song?

“La Vie en Rose” by Édith Piaf. Away from Josette, what’s your favourite restaurant in the city?

I love dining at Alici, overlooking the sea. The seafood menu takes me to the coastal towns of France, where I am from, with exquisite Mediterranean flavours. Random fact about you.

I remember my early days in Paris, performing in cabarets and legendary venues where the music played all night. Making my stage debut, I soaked in every performance. In the mornings, I would take my earnings and spend them on breakfast in a brasserie. It was ‘la bohème’ in my own way.

Olesia Glants

From the circus to the Dubai stage, this Ukrainian songstress leads the way at DREAM

How would you describe the show at DREAM?

DREAM is a carefully crafted production of the highest quality, designed to offer a full multi-sensory experience that takes guests on an unforgettable journey. Each evening, we immerse our audience in a world of glamour, world-class acts, and exceptional service. How does it differ from other shows in Dubai?

Our lineup stands out from other shows in town, featuring world-class acts, international artists, and group dance performances with theatrical costumes and captivating storylines. Our show also includes stunning vocal performances and adrenalinepumping acts. Additionally, we’ve perfected a unique approach to elevate energy without an MC, gradually engaging the crowd to culminate in a cheering grand finale that seamlessly transitions into a lively late-night party.

Tell us about your act and how you got started in this industry.

I am a professional singer who has been pursuing my musical aspirations since the tender age of five. After completing music school, college, and conservatory, my journey took me from performing in Bodrum, Turkey, to the UAE, where I have spent the

past three years at DREAM. It has become my home, a place where I have grown and excelled in my stage performances.

What’s your favourite part in the show?

I am a huge fan of all the shows, but if I had to choose a favourite, it would be the opening act, where I perform alongside the talented troupe of dancers. This act is truly magical, as it sets the tone for the evening and builds excitement for what’s to come.

Dressed in extravagant, glamorous costumes, I perform a powerful song that never fails to give everyone goosebumps, making it even more special to me. I still get butterflies every time I step onto the stage! Random fact about you?

I once worked in a circus, so I can juggle and walk on stilts!

How would you describe the show at Billionaire?

A high-energy blend of spectacular acrobatics, captivating dance numbers, and luxury dining. It’s an immersive experience that dazzles and entertains from start to finish.

How does it differ from other shows in Dubai? Billionaire excels at both entertainment and dining experiences, with unmatched talent scouted globally. The intricacy of the performances and the incredible ambiance make it a standout destination in Dubai’s nightlife.

COUNTER CULTURE

Chef’s counter dining is all the rage in Dubai. Here’s where to find the best front row seats to the culinary action

Scoring a seat at a trendy restaurant in Dubai is hard enough these days. Couple that quest with a mission to land the best seat in the house – like at the chef’s counter – and the challenge becomes that much more real. Still, between up-close aromas, perfect kitchen vantage points, and the intermittent chef-diner small talk, the experiential payoff of getting those choice chairs are big. From Michelin-standard cooking near Satwa to wholesome ramen bowls in The Greens, here are seven counters worth saddling up to.

Moonrise

Moonrise doesn’t simply have a chef’s counter – it is a chef’s counter. The entire Satwa restaurant hinges around this idea of dining as a personal experience. Regulars and first timers all want an up-close perspective on Solemann Haddad’s cooking, which showcases Middle Eastern and Japanese seasonal ingredients. The Michelin Star restaurant serves 12 guests at two sittings each night, with chef Solemann telling colourful culinary stories as they enjoy his unique creations. While the menu rotates regularly, signatures include a delicate pani puri with layering flavours of foie gras, date syrup, saffron chutney and truffle, and an outstanding take on the first dish Haddad ever made – a grilled cheese sandwich. On the current menu, highlights include charcoal-kissed Hokkaido milk bread, black garlic carpaccio, and 36-month aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. Eden House, Satwa, Dubai, Tue to Sat, 6pm and 9.30pm. Tel: (0)50 697 2946. @moonrise.xyz

Row on 45

With its chic style and attentive service, Row on 45 is perfectly pitched for its Grosvenor House location. And after an emotional Two Michelin Star announcement at July’s Dubai Michelin Guide 2024 reveal, there’s a buzz in the air. Chef Jason Atherton presents a tasting menu concept inspired by decades of professional culinary experiences, as well as his personal travels. The dining experience is broken into three acts. Act I: The Finest Welcome, sees guests enjoying snacks and an aperitif. Meanwhile, Act II: The Pinnacle is the main event in full view of the open kitchen, and Act III: The Grand Finale allows diners to wind down with an aperitif in the chef’s library. At Dhs1,145 per guest, the experience doesn’t come cheap, and competition for a place at the 22-seat counter that surrounds the open kitchen is fierce. But, for a lucky few, the investment is well-rewarded. After a short summer break, Row on 45 resumes service on September 3 with a new menu. Grosvenor House, Dubai Marina, Wed to Sat, 7.15pm to 1am. Tel: (0)56 832 4545. @rowon45dubai

Kokoro Handroll Bar

Rolling in hot from Houston is Kokoro Handroll Bar, one of a clutch of new restaurants to call Alserkal Avenue home. Chefs Daniel (Ducky) Lee and Patrick Pham have spent years in the US redefining the Japanese culinary experience. The result is laidback, counter-service, excellent sushi handrolls, and queues lining out of the door. Their concise menu promises flavour explosions, from the impressive collection of sashimi and nigiri, including bluefin otoro, hamachi and A5 Wagyu to the eight expertly crafted handrolls. Order the set of four at Dh120, which includes sake salmon, negitoro (minced tuna), spicy tuna and avocado, all individually made and passed over the counter when ready. Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, Wed to Sun, noon to 10pm. Tel: (0)4 259 7919. @kokoro.dxb

Takahisa

Omakase, a Japanese term meaning “chef’s choice,” signifies a meal where the chef selects and serves a variety of dishes. While omakase can feature different types of cuisine, it is often associated with sushi, traditionally served to a small group at a counter. Takahisa exemplifies this tradition, a bastion of top-tier sushi in the city. Here, they source premium ingredients directly from Japan, including from the renowned Toyosu Market in Tokyo and A5 Kobe beef, the highest grade of wagyu in the world.

At Takahisa, guests can expect a dining experience like no other featuring seasonal Japanese seafood and luxurious ingredients. Expect a menu laced with seasonal Japanese seafood and luxury ingredients, including sushi rice topped with generous portions of sea urchin, salmon, chopped bluefin tuna, and caviar.

Banyan Tree Dubai, Bluewaters Island, daily, noon to 2am. Tel: (0)4 556 6688. @takahisa_dubai

Kinoya

Perhaps nowhere blends the gourmet with the good times better than chef-owner Neha Mishra’s three-years-young restaurant, Kinoya. Tucked within the strip mall-style location of Onyx Tower in The Greens, Kinoya has four parts: a main dining area, two private rooms, a chef’s table and a counter-style izakaya where 17 diners are treated to a convivial kitchen theatre. Here you can watch Neha ladle up soul-warming bowls of goodness to her legion of giddy fans. It’s the perfect after-work kick-back spot. Onyx Tower, The Greens, Tue to Sun, noon to 1am. Tel: (0)4 548 6776. @kinoya.ae

Hoseki

The next-level endurance test to secure one of the nine spots at the ultra-chic sushi counter at Bulgari Resort Dubai will be familiar to anyone who has ever attempted it – Hoseki is booked up weeks in advance. But beyond bragging rights, the reason Dubai’s Japanese food purists put themselves through all the rigmarole of snagging a reservation, is the opportunity to watch sixth-generation sushi master Masahiro Sugiyama and his team show off their impressive knife skills. The Michelin Star restaurant presents the day’s beautifully fresh prime ingredients imported directly from Japan to create an omakase experience like no other. At a starting cost of Dhs1,750 per person, Hoseki’s tasting menu ain’t cheap, but it is spectacular. Bulgari Resort Dubai, Wed to Sun 6pm and 8.30pm (1pm on Thur, Fri, Sat and Sun). TERO – The Experience by Reif Othman

Reif Othman was one of the first to elevate personalised chef’s table dining in Dubai with his original restaurant The Experience back in 2017. Fast forward seven years and TERO in Dubai Hills is essentially Reif’s latest innovation playground – a restaurant with no menu, just premium ingredients and culinary artistry, creating an intimate kaiseki experience featuring unconventional FarEastern fare for very lucky guests. Dining experiences start from Dhs888 for eight courses.

EAT // LOCAL LEGEND

LOCAL LEGEND:

SEAFOOD MARKET

We visited one of Dubai’s oldest restaurants and learned why they’re still a favourite today…

The Dubai restaurant scene has evolved considerably in the past three decades with the city being home to an astounding variety of worldclass restaurants with exciting new eateries popping up every day. Hidden behind the hype-worthy new openings, there are Dubai institutions that have stood the test of time.

Seafood Market’s story began in 1992, inside Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, and has since been the go-to place for deliciously fresh, “live-to-table” seafood feasts. And despite it being more than 30 years since Seafood Market opened, it is still remarkably led by the same chef who started it all, Chef Nim Fat Kwai. Originally from Hong Kong, chef Kwai merges his Far Eastern culinary expertise with the impressive array of fish, to create some of the most memorable and freshest seafood recipes we’ve tried.

Inside the cruise-liner-inspired restaurant, there’s a market-style counter, where tanks of live seafood line the walls. Here, guests are invited to shop for their meals choosing between live shellfish, fresh whole fish, catch of the day, vegetables, Asian greens, mushrooms, and even fungus. Once you’ve selected your seafood, with the help of the knowledgeable staff, you choose cooking style, sauces, and sides (the kimchi fried rice (Dhs75) is a must-try).

First to arrive, ordered from the extensive à la carte menu, are the baked mussels with sriracha (Dhs80) and calamari (Dhs100) served salt and pepper-style and lightly battered with handfuls of fresh coriander, chilli and spring onions. The baked mussels were utterly moreish, delivering a symphony of creamy, salty, and spicy flavours. I instantly regret that there are only two of us; both starters could have easily been shared between a table of four hungry men. You get your dirham’s worth, that’s for sure.

From the market, we opted for the local hammour, deep fried in a rich batter and paired with a sweet and sour sauce (1kg for Dhs257). It was a fine choice – the hammour was fried to perfection with moist, tender meat inside. The sweetness of the sauce perfectly balanced the fish’s natural saltiness.

Next up, the whole Australian lobster, selected from the live tank – served as recommended by the waitress – sauteed and drenched in oyster sauce (1.28kg for Dhs1,088). This dish won us over with presentation, Asian-flavours, and the seductively sweet lobster meat.

Be sure to save room for dessert. The menu reads like a dream, pistachio crème brulee, deep fried ice cream, frozen Limoncello, flambéed Caribbean banana. We ordered the strawberry Kilimanjaro (Dhs125) flambéed at the table. This theatrical dessert layers fresh strawberries, vanilla ice cream, caramelised sugar, butter, and cream for an indulgent, warming finale to the meal.

Le Méridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre, Garhoud, 12.30pm to 5pm and 7pm to 11.30pm.

Seafood Market is a new (old) favourite. Visit with a group and order as much as possible.

REVIEW: RONIN

Putting high-octane theatrics into modern Japanese dining

When FIVE LUXE made its hotly anticipated debut earlier this year, its splashy beach club Playa Pacha; and export of lauded Barcelona bar Paradiso were much discussed. But Japanese restaurant Ronin got less of the limelight. So when we dine one mid-week night in August, we’re surprised to see it so busy. Granted, upon arriving for our 7pm reservation, we’re perhaps the second table to be seated. But by 9pm, there’s barely a free table in the restaurant.

Situated in a strip of restaurants and bars on the hotel’s 9th floor, we’re greeted out of the elevator by a friendly hostess. To the right you’ll find Paradiso; instead, we’re guided to the left, along the terrace of soon-to-open French restaurant Tete a Tete to the entrance of Ronin, lit by a neon red sign that confirms we’re in the right place. We gaze enviably at the lounge seats that line the terrace, complete with lovely sea and Ain Dubai views that will make it a sought-after sundowner spot when the weather cools.

runs along the entire length of the huge open kitchen, and as every guest walks in, a gong is sounded. A special mention should be given to the music, a mix of R&B and house hits that adds to the ambience, without drowning out what our dining partner is saying.

Inside, the restaurant is as Instagrammable as you’d expect: hundreds of red lanterns hang from the ceiling, private dining can be enjoyed in elevated pergolas or at a sushi bar that

We perch up at the sushi counter, and are immediately greeted by chef SK Choi, the animated head chef behind Ronin’s menu of modern, fun-dining Japanese dishes. Throughout the night, he’s frequently in and out of the kitchen, checking-in on diners and serving up dishes straight from the teppanyaki grill, providing a level of interactivity that guests lap up gleefully.

The extensive menu is the kind you want to return to time and again to try everything, and as we peruse it, we order edamame (Dhs40), which arrives piping hot and straight from the Teppanyaki, seasoned with just the right amount of salt. The crispy tuna pizza (Dhs140) is an excellent place to start, with a crispy tortilla base layered with slivers of tuna, and topped with slices of jalapeno and grated truffle added at the table.

Words: Alice Holtham-Pargin

We’re not such fans of Ronin’s take on KFC (Dhs80), and the pieces of chicken stuffed with a truffle mochi rice are a little dry. The wagyu beef gyozas (Dhs105) fare much better, set on a bed of ponzu butter, they get the ratio of crispy and juicy just right, although perhaps don’t need the truffle shaving topping.

It’s easy to fill up on the starters and sushi, but save room to try the ise ebi giant prawn (Dhs180), which serves up meaty pieces of prawn with a punchy garlic jalapeno butter; and the kimchi beef fried rice (Dhs85), perfectly salty with a golden egg yolk mixed in.

Whether you’re looking to end your meal indulgently, or something a little lighter, the concise options have something to suit everyone. The light and fruity mochi (Dhs55) are the perfect antidote to the sugary Japanese donuts (Dhs55), stuffed with caramel and served with a side of ice cream.

REVIEW:

LILA MOLINO

This new Alserkal eatery is all about good food, and welcoming vibes…

Lila Molino is Lila Taqueria’s tastefully expansive younger sister, helmed by the watchful, tender eye of Chef Shaw Lash. The relaxed sister restaurant opened it’s doors recently in Alserkal Avenue. It’s a cafe, it’s a marketplace and above all, it’s where you should go if you couldn’t care less about fancies and frills.

AMBIANCE

The culinary model of Alserkal Avenue has very a specific blueprint. Most of the spaces derive their beauty not from massive chandeliers and towering columns, but from pastel walls, sparse furniture, the materials of nature and free run greenery. Here, less is more and less is beautiful. The personality comes from the burnt orange tiles, the concept store and farm shop to your right, selling artisanal cutlery

and fresh ingredients, and the collection of traditional Mexican paintings on display on the walls. Everything about Lila Molino pays a tribute to the homeland.

FOOD

We start off with some drinks – the Paloma (Dhs35) and the coconut horchata (Dhs28). The horchata, an authentic Mexican export made from rice, is outstanding. Incredibly smooth, creamy and filled with the soul-warming powers of cinnamon, this is the beverage of summer. We had about three between the two of us.

The Paloma is fruity and feisty, with a strong aftertaste of jalapeno. We’re all for savoury drinks these days.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE

For the mains we have the crispy verde chicken gringa (Dhs60), a big, fat quesadilla, salty from a blanket of cheese and filled with grilled chicken guacamole and more typical Mexican fillings. The smoked brisket enchiladas (Dhs90) are the heaviest of the three, a mishmash of red chilli enchiladas filled with smoky meat and a lot of cheese. There is no dearth of flavour and fat – this is a lavish creation.

The starters begin with chips, salsa and guacamole (Dhs68) and a tamale of cheese with red chilli (Dhs40) – a personal favourite. It’s a steamed cake of cornmeal goodness and smoky poblano peppers layered with melting cheeses and served with a chilli dip. The tostadas of chicken tinga (Dhs50) are packed with flavour –chipotle chicken, black beans, avocado, the works and you can taste exactly what each one brings to the table.

As we tuck into dessert – churros (Dhs40), a fine balance of sugar and depth, and coconut lime tres leches cake (Dhs35), a milky, light amalgamation of Mexico’s best – we remark why Lila Molino will work. The fare, while not overly inventive, is wholesome, hearty, made with fresh produce and a love for the discipline, and strives to stay true – to Mexico, to Chef Shaw and to you.

Lila Molino, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, Tues to Sun, 9am to 10pm, closed Mon. Tel: (0)4 388 5600.

SEPTEMBER 2024

What’s Trending:

THE VIEW

Unless you’re stubbornly prepared to make pirate faces as sweat stings your eyeballs, September humidity delays alfresco dining for just a little while longer. So where do you go if you want dinner with a view? Martín Berasategui’s ode to the beauty and depth of Basque cusine. Jara at The Lana is a stone-cold stunner of a restaurant with city views to match. To eat – get the monkfish (Dhs595 per KG). To drink – order an El Patron (Dhs85), a tequila-based cocktail with lime, mango and padron pepper.

@jarabymartinberasategui

THE COCKTAIL

While some of you were celebrating Brat Summer with your spiked Fruit Shoots and Panini sticker books, a significant section of the rest of us were enjoying the more refreshing, sophisticated (I absolutely refuse to call it demure), Spritz Summer. Yes the fizz was back in biz for 2024, and leading the gang was the glamourous, thirst-quenching citrus trap, limoncello spritz. Where to try? Roberto’s in DIFC’s version is available for just Dhs40 as part of their aperitivo menu. @robertosdubai

THE SANDWICH

There’s a lot going on in this fast-paced city of ours, with new openings, fresh special offers, and a relentless hype machine behind it all. Because of that, it can be difficult to take it all in and sort the destinations of note from the noise. To help, we break down what’s hot and what’s not with a monthly guide to what’s trending and genuinely worthy of your attention. From dishes you should be eating to places you should be visiting…

The sandwich was invented in the 18th Century by a British Earl because, and we kid you not, he wanted a portable snack that meant he didn’t have to get up from a card gaming table. The man revolutionised food forever because his parents never set the equivalent of screen time boundaries. Whatever the muse, his creation spawned an endlessly branching tree of unique and beautiful forms, until reaching its snacking zenith – the salt beef sando. Exemplified in Dubai by Maxzi, Al Quoz (Dhs55), the Sandwich Earl reborn. @maxzithegoodfoodshop

THE MENU

What’s (NOT) Trending:

HOT HONEY

I can hear you shouting at the page and I don’t care. I’ve seen what some of you do with ketchup. Hot honey is having a moment in Dubai right now – and its primary deployment seems to be in generous dribbles over pizza. Likely by the same people that consider cereal an acceptable dinner food, using it as a proxy because they were pineapple-shamed out of ordering a Hawaiian. I genuinely cannot get my head around literally sugarcoating one of Italy’s greatest gifts to mankind to the extent that it’s essentially transformed into a mildly spicy flan.

OBNOXIOUS VOLUME

Found on the rooftop of Satwa’s Eden House – Moonrise is the glittering opus of Chef Solemann Haddad. The 12-step menu is a sensorial hyperleap through a cosmos of 90s Dubai nostalgia, and it’s just been refreshed with some new weapon-grade courses. It’s an oft-bookedout, boutique operation with one table for 12 diners, operating across two seatings five-nights-a-week. At Dhs950, it’s not going to feature in our ‘dining on a shoestring’ round-ups any time soon, but considering Moonrise is one of the best ‘Dubai restaurants’ on the planet that, my friends, is a 24-karat bargain. @moonrise.xyz

It’s almost definitely an age thing – but if I’m going out for food with friends, the background volume of the playlist/ saxophonist/mariachi band needs to sit below the threshold where you have to WhatsApp friends to communicate. I’m not against ‘loud environment’ notifications from my watch where they make sense. Crank up the decibels in late-night bars, clubs and beach raves. But there’s absolutely no need for a taco restaurant to serve Berghain flashbacks at 7pm on a Tuesday.

ENRIQUE IGLESIAS FOREVER

The Latin heartthrob returns to Dubai

Spanish star Enrique Iglesias is making a grand return to Dubai this month performing at the CocaCola Arena on September 13.

The singer-songwriter is a multiplatinum pop icon and a global superstar known for his stirring bilingual ballads performed in English and Spanish. He sits atop a cabinet of more than 190 awards including a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album and five career Latin Grammys. With 62 singles under his belt, he’ll be able to pull from a rich vein of smash hits to whip the crowd into an adoring frenzy. Join them in such sing-a-long serenades as Rhythm Divine, Hero, Could I Have This Kiss Forever, Bailamos and many more. Expect to be charmed by his velvety voice packed with emotion. As for his dance moves, erm… the man himself says he’s “a terrible dancer” and “dances like a guy who is trying to dance”. But we will let you be the judge of that when you see him live on stage.

Enrique has performed in Dubai several times in the past, most recently at the New

Year’s Eve party at Nammos in 2022/23. He even performed at the opening of The Pointe (RIP), back in December 2018 where he drew in thousands of adoring fans for his two-hour performance.

If you missed him during his previous shows, what are you waiting for? Tickets for his one-night-only show are selling out faster than a Heartbeat, so grab yours before it’s too late. They start from Dhs349.

5 THINGS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE KING OF LATIN POP

01 Though he is the son of the famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, Enrique climbed the path to stardom on his own. He worked in secret with his father’s publicist recording a demo and well, the rest is history.

02 The King of Latin Pop has surpassed Michael Jackson, the King of Pop himself in terms of chart-topping dance hits.

03 There is a version of Heartbeat with legendary vocalist Sunidhi Chauhan of Heartbeat replacing Nicole Scherzinger. And personally, this version trumps the original in our books thanks to its melodic Indian beats. Sorry Scherzinger.

04 Despite having performed over 750 concerts now, Enrique still gets anxious before the show and needs a shot of rum to calm his nerves. Would you like a hug from us instead, Enrique?

05 His most treasured possessions are his dogs, and he is quoted as saying some of his best moments are with his pups. Aww…

Art therapy with Thrive Wellbeing Centre

Adding a new layer to a creative session

The year is 2024, and we’re all about alternative wellness. Step forward art therapy, designed to help you express and process emotions, focusing on the process over the result. In Dubai, it takes place at Thrive Wellbeing Centre in JLT, where a therapist-led session invites you to engage in some creative mindfulness, shifting your focus away from day-to-day worries and stress.

When my therapist, Raneem – a MA, CDA-Licensed Psychologist at Thrive Wellbeing Centre, arrived and introductions were made, we chatted over a coffee. Once in the room, we took a seat at the table laid out with a watercolour box, brushes, and pencils.

The session begins with Raneem asking me to draw on paper how my day had been so far. I laughed out loud and traced out a heart monitor squiggle of jagged peaks and plunging troughs. Looking at the scribble, Raneem asks me about my day and what might be behind any current stress, but it wasn’t long before I was handed another A4 sheet of paper for my painting.

Everyone’s session is different, and that’s how it’s meant to be. So it could involve sculpting or scratching out symbols, drawing, or painting. Mine came with an unexpected prompt. Draw a portrait of yourself showcasing two sides – one

representing your inner self – the masked side, the forgotten side; the other what the world sees and experiences of Aarti.

I make no secret of the fact I love art but, dear reader, I’m no artist. Raneem put me at ease, telling me it’s not about the finished product, it’s about how you feel during the process. I got to work sketching out my face, tweaking as I went along. And soon it was painting time.

I started with my ‘outer face’, curls dominating the space in swirling brown and black hues. Then I moved on to the ‘inner’ side – switching up brushes, adding thick purple and pink curls. Raneem paints opposite me, glancing at my work every now and then while we engage in conversations around work, life, parents, travel plans, dreams and ambitions. It was easy talking to Raneem.

I finished my piece adding a tiny twinkle to the eyes of my inner self portrait. I

couldn’t help but feel content with my finished product.

Raneem asked me how I felt about the process, and as we continued to discuss my painting, memories I haven’t thought about in years rose to the surface. Of course I can’t reveal any personal details, but let’s just say tears were shed despite my best effort to conceal them.

Raneem offered support and suggestions. I shared that working with my hands helps soothe me, and she suggested I do more of it – puzzles, baking, painting, whatever it may be. But in short, the main takeaway, was to put Aarti first.

The session ends with me naming my painting and signing it.

I head home replaying the session in my head, making mental notes as to how I can make things better for myself. Three months from now, I aim to redo the activity at home as suggested by Raneem, and hopefully, I will notice a change. Bookings at Thrive Wellbeing Centre can be done on thrive.ae

STANDING GUARD

How Habibi Skate Shop is protecting the soul of skating

My conversation with Maysam Faraj happened on a Tuesday afternoon, quite unexpectedly. He called me out, in his unserious way, for taking a day to reply to his text message - ten minutes later, I was bouncing on the balls of my feet in our office conference room as he grappled with the technical difficulties of Google Meet. Not technologically inclined, the lot of us are.

He’s a sharp man, with a smile and a laugh he brandishes easily – as well as an honesty I take to quite well. The subject of our conversation is Habibi Skate Shop - a passion project he holds so dearly to his heart, although it’s not a passion project anymore.

“Even to say I love it, is a belittling sort of sentence,” says Maysam about skateboarding.

He then mock-gags at the term, “way of life”. “Skaters don’t need to say this stuff to each other, because we’ll say, “yeah dude, it’s skateboarding.””

Habibi Skate Shop is skater-owned, entirely homegrown, online and built on a sort of cellular level integration that has no language to explain it. It was founded just over two years ago - by the people, for the people, and although entirely online right now, is looking to change that soon. Like much in this world, its birth was driven by necessity, but the fire that wrought the iron was frustration.

Maysam came of age in the slim thick of it, back in the late 90s when the boys would get their camcorders and go skating at haunts like the Deira Fountain. “My friends and I would call us the first generation of skateboarders in the UAE,” he recalls, speaking of a time when there were no actual skate shops in the country and no peers to seed the local community. This was the crew.

“We did find a bikini-board-short kind of swimwear shop in Jumeirah called Heatwaves, and they had some very cool looking boards in their display.”

The group was able to secure a few boards, completely different in feel from the more readily available variety. Those were toys, these were the real deal - but they

Maysam Faraj

wanted more, needed more, and their eager pursuit led to the owner setting up a little beach-themed shack, coconuts and all, that stocked skating gear.

This was the first win and far from the last. Small and fledgling as it was, there was a new hurdle on the horizon for the community post the advent of the Internet. Suits, waltzing in with their drawing boards and pockets full of money, turning something affordable and approachable like skateboarding into something it’s not: gross mass appeal.

“Growing up, for me at least, skateboarding was not cool,” Maysam explains. “Then one day, it got really cool, and everyone wanted a piece of skateboarding, so commercials started popping up, brands started getting involved, and non-skaters started businesses to really capitalise on this.”

There is a pinch of possessiveness in his voice as he speaks, a sort of urgency to protect even the words he says about it, as if he owns this. He owns skateboarding, but so does every single person who does it with heart. It belongs to each and every one of them, earned with sweat, soul and countless hours of repetition. “I’m coming up on 26 years now. I can tell you, I’ve got DNA all around this city. My blood, my skin, my sweat - I’ve earned my passion. What they did is they turned it into an elitist activity.”

As such, the ethos of Habibi is simple. They support the community with basic needs: fresh, quality product, fair pricing and the merit their best interest as skateboarders deserves. It’s an organic equation, heartening and humbly intended to honour the greatest prizes any skater could ever recieve: power and freedom.

Also a cultural collective, the shop takes it upon itself to teach local skaters what is good for them and what is not (which at the top of the list is removing the skater itself from the formula), especially when the threat of capitalism looms low still, pop culture-fying the precious craft. Much work has to be done, Maysam tells me.

Beyond the country and into the region, Habibi is helping foster similar projects all over, from Egypt to Oman, Kuwait, and beyond. An

industry machinery is missing and without the logistical, geographical and economic benefits that bring growth and collaboration for even the most authentic collectives is nearly impossible.

This fight for representation is an uphill battle, but there is a sense of optimism from the mere existence of a shop like Habibi; to an outsider like me, the fierceness of Maysam’s ideals and this one thing he told

“Skateboarding is all magic,” elaborates Maysam. “The industry is magic. No one has a network, no one has a contact, no one is in the in. Dealing from one person to another person to another city to another country – and I found myself taking on a lot of those problems.”

THE ARCHIVES…

me that gives reason enough.

“I identify as a skateboarder, therefore I have empathy, therefore I have resilience, I have grit, I have a DIY mentality, I appreciate architecture, I appreciate arts, I appreciate opinions and difference of opinion; because this is skateboarding culture.”

When we talk about skate culture, we need to talk about video documentation because visuals are king and that’s how the trajectory of evolution will come about. Consider these pictures a tapestry of history, memory, places, people and the point where they all come together - a culture in the making, in real time.

Sandboarding

We know you can snowboard in Ski Dubai, which is cool, but sandboarding just seems to go with the grain of UAE culture. And whilst the thrill potential is high, the barriers to entry are low – you just need a board (available in local retailers from Dhs200), some wax and a sand dune, which you can find *gestures broadly around*. If you’d prefer to open your sand shredding account with a bit more structure, there’s a bucket load of desert tours that offer guided descents down the region’s golden peaks. @arabianadventures

Teqball

Conceived in Hungary in 2014, teqball is the resultant offspring from the shotgun marriage of football and ping pong. Players meet across a curved table to deflect a ball with whichever part of their body is most immediately convenient (except their arms/hands). Its advocates point to its fast pace and technical complexity as reasons why it’s one of the fastest growing sports on the world stage. If you fancy giving it a go for yourself you can rent a table at Dubai Sports World (Dhs25, Dubai WTC), but you’ll need to be quick, it shuts up shop on September 5. @dubaisportsworld

IT TAKES ALL SPORTS

The best of Dubai’s alternative fitness scene

If you find fault with padel, if football isn’t one of your life goals, and the very idea of HIIT makes you cross(fit), it might just be that you haven’t found the right sport for you. Thankfully the UAE is home to an incredible range of unconventional fitness activities. Join us on a lap of Dubai’s wildest sporting action...

Dodgeball

According to the movie of the same name “if you’re going to become true dodgeballers, then you’ve got to learn the five d’s of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge”. Sage words, but your first task as a prospective baller should be finding a place, and a team to dodge with. Fortunately for us, Dubai marks a strong entry as the sixth d – with opportunities to throw and be thrown at across the city. Ultimate frisbee

Barbecue backhand, clam, doink, scoober – nope, these aren’t the latest entries into the Gen Alpha lexicon of impenetrable slang – these are terms used in the fabled art of disc chucking. Ultimate frisbee, now often referred to as just ‘ultimate’, spun out of the American counterculture of the 1960s and has steadily grown in popularity to the point that it’s now being considered for inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games. There are several ultimate clubs operating in the UAE including Tika Taka, Junkies (Zabeel Park), AFT and Dubai Stackers (JVC) as well as annual tournaments and championship games.

Casa Aire Wellness

Next-level wellness lands in

Most of us have the conversations about our hair here in UAE. For me, it usually revolves around hair loss, thinning, dry scalp, frizziness and split ends. No matter what shampoo, conditioner, oil, or mask I try – nothing has had a lasting impact.

Because I have curly hair (ringlets), taking care of my locks can be a little more complicated than the average hair type. And one of my biggest areas of concern has become hair loss. So much so, I’ve come close to just chopping it all off out of frustration.

So, when Casa Aire, a new wellness space promising top-to-toe transformations, opened its doors in Dubai Marina, I was first in line to give it a go. To get the most out of a session, I booked in for the Harmony Of Zen treatment (Dhs715).

As I walk in, I’m reminded of a Google review I read that called it a ‘Disneyland for ladies’. It feels fitting. I was given a bathrobe and a cotton slip before being offered a refreshing lemonade water. I relaxed, soaking in the sound of the water fountain and light music.

I should probably point out that, as if on command, my hair was in particular state of disarray on the day of the treatment. Not on purpose, of course, but I wanted my hair to be product-free, which meant I was looking semi alpaca-like thanks to the Dubai humidity. When my therapist retrieves me, we head

to the hair treatment room where a Korean air pressure point bed was waiting for me attached to the pièce de résistance, the Korean head bath.

Once under the covers, it was a minute or so before the massage bed got to work. A heated eye mask is swiftly placed on my eyes and the therapist begins the treatment, taking scans from various parts of my head whilst I lay there internally cringing at what she’s seen. Looking at my scans, my therapist Huma decided the Aromatic Rosemary line would be best for me. She begins with a quick hair wash with the Korean head bath to rinse off any product before a scrub is applied and

massaged into my scalp. Not long after, my scalp started to feel tingly and cool. Another hair wash and already, it felt like my scalp was receiving some much-needed oxygen.

A shampoo is applied and then gently worked in and washed away with another spritz from the head spa. Next, conditioner is applied, after which the Korean head spa lets out steam to lock in the product.

Once the product is rinsed off, I feel a gentle spritz in my hair before it is lightly massaged in. And just like that the one-hour session is over, but I did feel like my scalp was squeaky clean. And the scans I’m shown thereafter prove it.

Huma stated that I did have bad hair fall and suggested I use the Rosemary Active V – an antihair loss tonic from Aromatica (Dhs114). Having heard of the wonders of Rosemary from a close friend and desperate to see a longlasting change in my hair, I made the purchase.

Before you leave, you are free to use the amenities and enjoy another beverage and some light snacks. I left with my hair and scalp feeling squeaky clean making mental notes to ditch the cheap off-the-shelf products and to listen to the professionals.

TWO WEEKS ON:

I am staying away from products that will add build-up to my scalp, but religiously using the hair loss tonic. I have noticed a slight change, but as usual there are good days and bad. Figuring out what causes those bad days is still a work in progress.

The dual appeal of Ibiza

Exploring both sides of the White Isle

Words: Miles Buckeridge

Twenty years have passed since I last set foot in Thailand. For scale, that’s equivalent to five US Presidential cycles, two GTA games or one full Greta Thunberg. A lot has changed in those intervening decades, not least me. And so this time, I’m travelling with a wife and kids on a wholly wholesome trip. I’m swapping out buckets of brightly coloured beverages for buckets and spades, hostels for hotels, though – hopefully – enjoying the same level of exotic awe and barefoot beach bliss.

But where amongst the thousands of idyllic isles and Lonely Planet bookmarks, should we take our four-man tour bus to? Phuket is the firm front-runner for good reason. Emirates flies there direct from Dubai; if your tribe prefer holidays where you don’t just stay in one place, it’s one of the easier provinces to navigate on the go; much of the unsavoury, R-Rated neon is hidden away on side streets (as long as you steer clear of Patong); it offers diversity of experience; and has in abundance the sort of fivestar comfort and convenience we’ve become non-negotiably accustomed to living in the UAE.

Act one of our trip takes place in the established Phuket tourist enclave of Kata Beach – a thronging, sarong-ing hub where gap-year backpackers tread the market streets alongside leisure flop-and-droppers. It’s August, right in the humid heart of the monsoon season, but the cloudless skies above don’t seem to have seen the forecast. The beach is busy and visited by rough surf, so if you’re travelling with young children the pool is probably a better option for your time here. Before we check into hotel number one, we make a quick pit stop at 7-Eleven, an essential station on any trip through Thailand. The local currency, Bhat, conveniently converts to dirhams by a factor of 10 (1,000 THB is roughly Dhs105), making shopping for scorpion balm or microwavable gyoza less fraught with currency mishaps.

Club Med Phuket, Kata

With properties ranging from Alpine lodges to Indian Ocean havens, there’s a lot of diversity in the Club Med portfolio. There are certain elements though, that remain constant across the global network. These brand standards mean you’ll always get generous all-inclusive packages that take the pressure off budgeting; a consistently high standard of gastronomy; a huge collection of facilities and entertainment experiences for all; and an activity-packed schedule at the various age-tiered kids’ clubs. Club Med Phuket is a brochure example of these leisure lifelines. So in addition to the local staples such as a surf-streaked stretch of beach, spa and multiple pools – your Phuket trip is enhanced with opportunities to learn the art of trapeze dismounts at the on-site circus school; explore the basics of muaythai; throw suds and shapes

at the pool-adjacent foam party; enjoy nightly themed cabaret spectaculars; take cooking lessons; hit the bullseye with archery classes; and embark on snorkelling safaris. The culinary output, considering it’s mostly buffet-based, is particularly strong in range and quality, and another reason why I think Club Med ranks amongst the top family hotels in Phuket. And it’s not just great for families. With the adults-only Zen pool, couples holidaying here can spend most of the day beyond the audible distance of the more tantrum-prone guests. Many of the rooms have been recently renovated and offer a suave situ, so you could quite merrily pass your entire holiday within the gated resort and not spend an additional dirham beyond your initial booking costs. But the hunger for adventure is not one easily sated, so on we push.

Rooms from around Dhs1,200 per night, based on two people for three nights all-inclusive. @clubmed

You still see plenty of the old school, precariously assembled, tuk-tuks in Thailand. A motorcycle with an oversized sidecar haphazardly welded to the chassis, featuring the manufacturer’s options pack of disco lights and near-death experiences. But it feels like they’re being slowly and systematically replaced by a fleet of souped-up grey minivans that now dominate the thoroughfares. Light might not be able to escape a black hole, but there’s not a country I’ve visited that’s been able to resist the vacuum of transport sector Uberfication. And what you lose in old-world charm, you almost certainly make up for in transit times and life expectancy. We’ve booked one of the MPVs via Grab, an app that’s ostensibly the Thai version of Careem (they do food delivery too). Despite a lengthy overlap with the school summer holidays, there are fewer tourists in Phuket during the wet season. So the traffic is thin as we cruise towards the next destination, Mai Khao, on the northern tip of the island. Staring out of the window, you’re forbidden from forgetting Thailand’s true tropical self. Living emerald dunes snake right up to the fringes of the roads, and there is no doubt that nature could snatch it all back in a heartbeat if it were moved to do so.

Anantara Mai Khao

Phuket Villas

Mai Khao is a much quieter quarter of Phuket. It feels younger, less developed, and an ideal escape if you’ve come to Thailand seeking sanctuary. The beach sits at the other end of the spectrum to Kata, it’s unprocessed and raw, quiet and seemingly unending. Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas grounds itself in that surrounding serenity. Your arrival is heralded by the striking of a sacred gong, check-in takes place in a pagoda over a gently rippling coy lagoon, and then you’re ferried off on a leafy buggy ride to your lodgings. The exterior of our one-bedroom pool villa is traditionally Thai in style, but the interior is of expertly manicured modern design. It’s a big old space and those generous portions apply to the plunge pool too, but the grounds hold two big

main pools to tempt you into communal dips. The Anantara Spa experience is a globally recognised wellness gem, and the signature massage at Mai Khao will pummel even the most stubborn of your wonky chakras into alignment. In-resort dining highlights run to Sea.Fire.Salt – the beautifully bougie beachside grill; Indian restaurant and Michelin Guide inductee, Tiffin; Treehouse, a fine dining dojo of Japanese high art; and all-day lagoon-side (where after feeding yourself, you can feed the fish) diner, La Sala. Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas is an archetypal ambassador for laidback, unobnoxious luxury and it’s our top pick if you’re seeking seclusion and a convenient launch pad for exploring the islands of Ao Phang Nga National Park. Villas from around Dhs1,004 per night based on two people for three nights bed and breakfast. @anantaramaikhao

The closing chapter of this Thai escapade takes place in Khao Lak, which sits just north of Phuket on the mainland. Behind the coastal hotels, there’s a commercial strip of restaurants, massage shops, mini marts and tattoo parlours of violently varying quality. Sitting snug against the plastic sheetwrapped table at one of the local eateries, I reflect on how easy it’s been to satisfy each of our younger traveller’s particular food penchants. My son has embraced the spice and aromatic alchemy of the regional cuisine, my daughter has continued her solo quest to exhaust the world of all chicken nuggets. But we’ve managed to feed both, in the same restaurant on all of our stops in Thailand.

Avani+ Khao Lak

DAYTRIPPING

Of all the places we stayed (and there are several more that did not make the mentions), this hotel has the nicest beach. The entire property is fenced by encroaching jungle, which adds to an overall sense of seclusion, exoticism and synergy with nature. It also has some incredible family-friendly facilities. There’s a climbing wall (this seems to be a reoccurring theme in the hotels here, but I’m too embarrassed by ignorance to ask why), a freeto-play arcade room, pool complex with splashpad, skatepark, forest farm and a massive AvaniFit gym. Choosing how to spend your time in the property is likely to be tough, but with all the choice on offer, dining decisions won’t be much easier to make. We loved the casual poolside pizzeria, Mi Scusi; the all-day diner – Elements puts on a grandstand breakfast buffet; there’s a gelateria, coffee shop and The Beach House does a wonderful seafood platter. Chicken nuggets, I can confirm, are also available. We stayed in a two-bedroom family pool suite (from Dhs1,360 per nigh) and it was a light, delightfully modern space but we spent so little time indoors, its charms were wasted on us. Avani+ is the Goldilocks option, it has outstanding amenities in abundance and a full arm’s length from the maddening crowds. Rooms from around Dhs214 per night based on two people for three nights bed and breakfast. @avanikhaolak

A wholesome family trip to Thailand is a hard thing to tear yourself away from, but coming back to Dubai is easy. Sunshine and fun times make forever holidays.

There is a lot of familyfocused entertainment to tempt you away from the comfort of your hotel in Phuket. But not all of it has been created equally. We visited theme parks, go-kart tracks, night markets and a naval turtle rehabilitation centre that I’m not 100 per cent sure wasn’t a humidityinduced hallucination. We made an ethical choice to avoid elephant sanctuaries, because it was proving difficult to verify in advance how well looked after the animals were. But the best day trips, and it wasn’t even close, were the longtail boat tours of the neighbouring islands. Because of Phuket’s geographical location along the Thai peninsula, the destinations in the Andaman Sea are going to be the easiest to reach. The likes of Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan are found off the opposing coast of the mainland. That still leaves a lot of sea to see. Phi Phi Islands are probably the more famous sea-carved limestone idylls, they hold the key to the Maya Bay’s lagoon, the fabled setting of the film adaptation of Alex Garland’s The Beach. You can also drop anchor at the floating villages of Phang Nga Bay, and trace the silver coastline of James Bond Island. But as with most things in life, it’s the journey to the destination, that’s often the most fulfilling part of these trips. Boat tours start at around Dhs150.

THRILL AND CHILL:

Ibiza

This Balearic beauty has a reputation for its hedonistic parties and all-night raves. But there’s another side to Ibiza that now draws chill-seekers as well as party animals. Here’s how to experience the best of both worlds...

THRILL

STAY: W Ibiza

While Santa Eulalia isn’t typically known as the hedonistic heart of the White Isle, W Ibiza dances to the sound of its own beat. The playful property has added a touch of Ibiza pizazz and typical W flamboyance to this part of town, and the resulting hotel is a sophisticated party pad, while still feeling like you’re somewhat removed from the tourist throes. Guest rooms are bright and breezy, laced with Ibiza’s bohemian spirit through colourful artworks, throws and cushions. Each comes with its own balcony, shaded by a rainbowhued awning, which faces inward to the main Wet Deck pool, so you always feel like you’re part of the happenings. Everything is in an invitation to socialise and have fun: the lobby – where check-in comes complete with a cool glass of Cava – melds into the W Lounge; an amphitheatre-style space that fuses industrial-style concrete with colourful cushions. A cool spot to chill-out by day, it transforms into an exclusive lounge by night that hosts a series of lively DJ sets for those in-the-know. The crowning feature, adults-only Glow Rooftop, further cements this hotel as one of the east coast’s most stylish spots, with bright orange loungers and a pool for soaking up the rays during the day, and a bar that shakes up refreshing sips as the sun goes down. A short walk away, new for 2024, W Ibiza has taken over an old restaurant on the beachfront to transform it into Yellowfish, a beach club and Mediterranean restaurant with a chilled-out soundtrack, a boho beach bar, and a menu of sharing plates best for enjoying over a leisurely lunch. There’s a selection of restaurant tables under a thatched roof, or recline on your lounger watching the waves as you dine. Rates from Dhs1,350. @wibiza

PLAY: Ushuaïa

PLAY: O Beach

Instantly recognisable for its signature sunshine shade of orange, O Beach is an icon on Ibiza’s daytime party scene. This San Antonio beach club regularly draws celebs and reality TV stars to bask in the rays on one of its plush day beds, or retreat from the heat at the shaded cabanas. There’s a daily rotation of parties that promise house music, dance hits, and commercial floor fillers, so there’s no bad day to book. And all of the action centres around the huge swimming pool and DJ booth in the beating heart of the beach club, so wherever you reserve, you’re right in the action. The dance shows –complete with confetti cannons and huge characters suspended on cranes – start from 5pm, and really add the wow-factor. @obeachibiza

An open-air super club that needs no introduction, if you’re partying in Ibiza you need to go to Ushuaïa. For those hitting the island to dance every hour away, it’s the perfect sunset spot, and its day-to-night events are nothing short of legendary. Even those that don’t like to be dancing when the sun comes up will find their place here, as the headline DJ set takes place just after sunset at around 9pm. In residence this September, an all-star array of deck-spinning icons features David Guetta on Mondays, Martin Garrix on Thursdays, and Calvin Harris headlines Fridays. It’s the latter who’ll be opening this Ibiza icon’s Dubai outpost at Dubai Harbour on October 26.

@ushuaiaibiza

PLAY: Pacha

Ibiza and Pacha: it’s hard to imagine one without the other. A staple on the party scene of this hedonistic island since 1973, this colourful, comeas-you-are nightclub has had party people flocking to Talamanca for more than 50 years. You’ll find the best vibes on the dancefloor, as revelers press themselves as close to the DJ booth as possible. But for a Dubai touch, book one of the VIP tables, which command views of the electric atmosphere. There’s a roster of DJs on each night, but the vibe peaks just before the sun comes up – so wear flats and plan to dance the night away. This summer’s lineup features Marco Carola’s Music On on Fridays, Bedouin’s SAGA on Wednesdays, and dedicates Saturdays to Flower Power.

@pachaibiza

DINE: TATEL

Housed inside the Hard Rock Hotel, on a strip of Playa d’en Bossa made famous by brands like Ushuaia, Nassau, and Beachouse, you’ll find TATEL. Born in Madrid, the Ibiza iteration of this glitzy eatery has the sleek and sophisticated feel that made the brand famous in the Spanish capital, but with injections of breezy Ibiza hedonism, in the form of avant-garde shows and a gorgeous garden that’s the perfect place to sip cocktails before heading out-out. On the menu, garlic shrimps are a must-try if you want to sample local treasures, while the spaghettoni al limone with red prawn tartare is another signature you shouldn’t miss.

@tatelibiza

CHILL

STAY: 7Pines Resort Ibiza –Destination by Hyatt

There’s something undeniably special about arriving at 7Pines. Set between Cala Conta and Cala Codolar on Ibiza’s west coast, it feels as though the lush pine groves are leading you somewhere exclusive and secluded. Those same feelings continue once you arrive at this all-suite resort, where guest rooms are dotted within whitewashed villas, designed to resemble a traditional Ibizan village. But traditional this is not. The resort is modern and breezy, and pulling up to the nautically-inspired lobby, you’re struck by how truly magnificent the views of the glassy Mediterranean waters, craggy cliffs and magnetic Es Vedra are.

Guest rooms come in more than a dozen categories and are divided into three areas, with the more family-friendly rooms arranged around a lagoon pool; exclusive The Cliff housing the luxe penthouses; and the Ibicenco Village, where we check-in, in between. Here, guest rooms are equipped with a kitchenette, a balcony that gazes out over the gardens or sea, and soft furnishings in calming shades of blue and green inspired by the locale. If relaxation is top of your agenda, then while away the day by the pool, sipping from coconuts and dining on poke bowls and fresh salads; or head to Pure Seven, a zen-inducing oasis of pampering spa treatments with its own pool and treatment rooms backdropped by the sea. A regular programme of classes goes far beyond the basics, with guided hikes, yoga, Pilates and meditation available to guests.

Few spots in Ibiza come with the spectacular sunset vistas that are offered at The Cone Club – so arrive early to get a front row seat to one of nature’s most sensational shows, while you sip on an array of spritzes that mirror the sunset shades. Then, head upstairs afterwards for an epicurean experience at The View, where newly appointed executive chef Óscar Salazar’s strong passion for garden-to-table dishes (the resort now features its own herb garden) results in an elevated menu featuring reimagined twists on Spanish tortillas, prettily plated Ibiza onions, and flavour-packed local fish. Rates from Dhs2,400. @7pinesibiza

PLAY: Jondal

Jondal is having a moment this season, and you’ll want to book in advance to snag a table or lounger at this sundrenched spot on one of the island’s southernmost beaches. Long, leisurely lunches are best enjoyed under the dappled shade of canopies laced between the trees, and while little ones play in the sand, adults can enjoy plates of tapas on wooden tables, while sipping on refreshing cocktails or fresh lemonades.

@casajondal

PLAY: Nikki Beach

This luxurious beach club has cleverly positioned itself in essentially every party spot around the world, so you can ‘celebrate life’ Nikki Beach style wherever your hedonistic travels take you. But the Ibiza iteration, sitting pretty on quieter east side of the island, is more laidback luxe than shot shows and booming beats – and it’s all the better for it. With a restaurant on one side and a pool and beach on the other, the rustic landscaping and golden sand are gorgeously relaxing, and linenclad waiters buzz around tables and day beds topping up drinks and serving up Mediterranean dishes that make the most of the fresh local ingredients. @nikkibeachibiza

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO…

• You’ll want to book tickets for the big parties well in advance.

DINE: Amante

Nestled within a serene cove on the east side of Ibiza is Amante. This split-level restaurant and beach club is arranged around the cliff it’s carved into, and gazes out over the calm turquoise waters that gently lap the island. While it’s not sunsetfacing, the sorbet hues served up at this time of day create a romantic backdrop to an evening meal, as does the chilled house beats that play softly as you dine. The food is a concise menu of Mediterranean flavours that favours ordering per person rather than tapas-style sharing. The best tables are found on the second and third levels, closest to the edge. Or, go all-out and book the private candlelit table for two. @amanteibiza

• Many of the popular restaurants book out several weeks prior, but often leave a handful of tables for on-the-day reservations, so using a concierge company like Faith (@faithibiza) can ensure you snag the best tables.

• Taxis can be scarce during peak hours, and Uber can be unreliable, so plan ahead.

• Everything happens later here – so expect to make 10pm dinner reservations and head out to party at around 1.30am.

Naäma Beach

Villas & Spa

A slice of the Maldives nestled in the Hajar Mountains

Want to enjoy a unique getaway with island-vibes without booking a flight? Just pack your bags and drive east to Fujairah.

LOCATION

Just 90 minutes from Dubai, Naäma Beach Villas & Spa in peaceful Fujairah swaps out city skylines for the majestic, rugged Hajar mountains. Located a stone’s throw away from Snoppy Island and Al Aqah Beach, you will be surrounded by nature with the Indian Ocean on one side and mountain range on the other.

LOOK AND FEEL

Unexpected. That’s the one word I will use to describe what I felt when we were driven to our villa in our buggy by our very own butler post a stress-free check-in. Fountains with ponds and lush greenery surround you as you make your way around the resort, backed with waves crashing in the distance and views of Snoopy Island. The villas feature traditional Arabian architecture intertwined with modern elements reminding you you’re still in the UAE.

ROOMS

This little slice of paradise is home to 44 villas inspired by Fujairah’s rich history

with one-bedroom, two-bedroom or a fourbedroom mountain or ocean view options. Complete seclusion comes as standard during your escape, each villa is equipped with its very own private outdoor pool and jacuzzi sheltered by walls so you can enjoy a private swim under the sky. The bedrooms come with a sauna or steam room (or both depending on your villa choice); a large bathtub with spray jets; a walk-in shower and outdoor shower.

FACILITIES

Nestled among the villas lies ESPA, a further slice of heaven. Wellness seekers will find a sauna, a steam room, plunge pool and jacuzzi in addition to a unique spa menu. We opted for a salt stone massage, which left our skin exfoliated and the deep muscle massage, which worked out the knots in our back. There’s an indoor pool, and a main outdoor pool by the restaurant with endless ocean views. You can burn calories at the gym, or in a game of padel at the neighbouring Miramar Al Aqah Beach Resort. There’s also diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, hiking and more – just a butler booking away.

FOOD AND DRINK

It’s soft opening during our stay, so lunch and dinner took place at the international fine-dining restaurant, Aseelah. There are soups, salads, snacks, seafood, and classics from Italian and Indian cuisine. Our top recommendations? The lobster tonnarelli, togarashi seared tuna, wagyu burger and chicken quesadilla. For breakfast, you can comb out your bed hair and shuffle your way to the restaurant, or… just message your butler to have the breakfast delivered to your villa.

RATES

Villa rates start from Dhs3,230 for a one-bedroom pool villa.
