THIS MONTH, I’M CELEBRATING

YEAR DUBAIVERSARY

It’s a milestone I certainly didn’t think I’d reach when I landed in October 2015. Nor when I briefly left the city during the height of the pandemic in 2020. And yet, like many who’ve boomeranged between their homeland and their adopted home in the UAE, I now find myself more content than ever as a Dubai dweller.

As we move into the final few months of the year, I’ve never felt more grateful to call the emirates home. Sure, for the surface level stuff. Like the fact that as much of the world returns to hibernation – armed with layers of jumpers and coats – Dubai comes into its own, gloriously showing off its alfresco wow-factor (you’ll find plenty of that from p17).

But also because we live in a city where safety, tolerance and peace are among the defining pillars. Where else in the world do some 200 nationalities live so harmoniously, their cultures and traditions weaving into each other to create a country where one and all feel welcome? And if you are new to the city, one of the increasing number of Dubai expat residents, then welcome – we know it can be daunting at first. So, we’ve got the best places to make new friends from p30.

If I can impart one piece of advice, let it be this: throw yourself into new experiences. Accept that invitation to a colleague’s birthday, extend one to a neighbour. Say yes to that fitness class with a friend of a friend, or join that run club you see on Instagram. You never know what doors it might open.

Enjoy the issue,

Pick n Icks

This month the What’s On team share the best ways to impress and cause distress with Halloween fancy dress

Alice Holtham-Pargin,

PICK: Family costumes. Some might call them tacky, personally I find them pretty wholesome. The same adoration I have for matching pjs at Christmas infiltrates into matching Halloween fits. I draw the line at Easter, though.

ICK: Something too niche. Get creative, but if you’re coming dressed as an extra from a horror film released 40 years ago that no-one remembers, you’re better off staying at home.

Online Reporter

PICK: I prefer when costumes go down the traditional scary routeghosts, zombies, ghouls etc etc. And no you can’t just take the outfit you were going to wear, add some makeup and say “I’m Zombie Taylor Swift’.

ICK: When I see someone dressed up disrespectfully –poking fun at a profession, belief or body type for example, just a major ick. It’s lazy, it’s rude, you can do better.

Tamara Wright, Online Reporter

PICK: Maybe it’s my age, but I love Halloween costumes that show off a clever pun, like ‘Holy Cow’ or ‘Cereal Killer’ — simple and funny. I’d much rather be remembered as the cow or giant avocado, but absolutely zero judgement to those who prefer to rock their lingerie.

ICK: My ick is faceconcealing mascot costumes, no matter the time of year. It doesn’t even have to be a scary one —a fairytale princess with that blank, expressionless face creeps me out, especially when you have no idea who’s inside.

Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor

PICK: Dressing up as characters you can do a passable impression of. I love watching people immerse themselves in their role. If you’re dressed as a pirate – go full Captain Jack. Come as Lara Croft? You need to shimmy across at least one piece of guttering before the end of the night.

ICK: Months-old memes. The internet has shaved down the operational half-life of zeitgeist. So when your dad starts using the phrase ‘very demure’, and the gifs of Australian breakdancers hit the WhatsApp group, it might be time to rethink your Halloween choices.

Shelby Gee,

PICK: I love Halloween TV specials, so any costume in real life that pays homage to a costume in a tv show is my type of meta. Take Shelby from New Girl, she wore a queen cloak, covered in fluffy cat and dog toys, paired with a scepter and a crown. Her costume? “Reigning (raining) cats and dogs” and I think like all Shelbys – she is a genius.

ICK: No effort costumes. If you’re going to do a Halloween costume, please do it properly. Drawing on cat whiskers and a nose with eyeliner, does not a cat costume make. That’s all.

PICK: Costumes of famous horror movie characters like Ghostface, The Mummy or Pennywise.

ICK: Spending a ton on a Halloween costume. To me, it’s about getting creative and having fun – and chances are you’ll never wear it again. There are so many ways to enjoy the Halloween spirit without burning a hole in your pocket.

Manaal Fatimah, Junior Reporter

PICK: I’m pretty average at themed make-up but some of the Halloween-ers out there show up with some incredible, transformative art on their faces, and I can fully appreciate their prowess. Teach me your ways.

ICK: Call me a hater and maybe I’m miserable, but matching couples’ costumes take the cake for Halloween cringe. Fred and Daphne are cute; male cat and female cat are not.

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Roxie Nafousi

This month, we chat to Roxie Nafousi (@roxienafousi), self-development coach, inspirational speaker, and author of MANIFEST: 7 Steps to Living Your Best Life. Ahead of her show in Dubai, and after visiting her parents here for the last 16 years, she shares her top spots that you need on your radar.

It is really hard to choose but Four Seasons Resort is probably one of my favourites. I love the pool, beach, and family vibe to it, but it’s also got a gorgeous spa and lots of amazing restaurants too (I love when you can go straight from dinner to bed!) @fsdubai

Matcha Club. I’m obsessed with the cafe there, I actually started writing my MANIFEST for Kids book there. Plus, I have a new obsession with padel and I love yoga, so I could literally stay there all day. @matchadxb

The Guild! The decor, the open kitchen, the music and the food are all 10/10. The team are just incredible, and the gold chocolate dessert is a must have.

@theguilddubai

There’s a gorgeous cafe my sister, Noona introduced me to called La Nena. It’s so calming, and I love the earthy and neutral interiors. @lanenacoffee

My parents live Downtown and we have a beautiful view of the Burj Khalifa from the balcony. So, first thing in the morning I make my coffee, sit with my mum and enjoy the warm air of Dubai and look at the incredible building and I feel so at peace and full of gratitude.

CHECKOUT THESE GORGEOUS RESTAURANTS OPENING AT

SOFITEL AL HAMRA BEACH RESORT

PBrand new dining destinations in Ras Al Khaimah...

erched on the sandy shores of Ras Al Khaimah, Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort is expanding its already impressive range of dining destinations with the addition of two new stunning restaurants.

RÉUNION

Set to open on October 1, step into the chic ambiance of the South of France at Réunion. The charming brasserie will offer guests the perfect blend of casual yet refined dining.

Whether you’re there for lunch or dinner – the bistro-style dishes paired with fine wines, and elegant cocktails make for the ultimate dining experience where guests are transported to the shores of the French Riviera. The restaurant seamlessly blends from day to night, making it an ideal hub for sophisticated socialising.

WAKA

Opening in November, Waka is exotic and will transport you to the islands of Polynesia. At the sparkling resort pool and overlooking the Arabian Gulf, Waka offers a vibrant fusion of Polynesian flavours and entertainment.

From flame-grilled seafood to slow-roasted meats, tropical cocktails and beyond – watch as fire dancers perform dramatic dances as you dine to your heart’s delight.

As the evening progresses, enjoy live music or DJ sets at the beach terrace for a night of unforgettable island vibes.

The new venues are the perfect addition to Sofitel Al Hamra Beach Resort’s already fantastic offerings, which include 292 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, four beachfront pools, a Clarins spa, and the nearby Al Hamra Golf Club.

We’ve always welcomed October at What’s On. Traditionally our outdoor issue marks the return of the winter weather, and with it, the residents and visitors flocking back to the UAE’s burgeoning array of outdoor attractions, beachfront restaurants and lofty rooftop bars.

But it’s not just about those old-but-gold alfresco favourites. After a summer spent hard at work on new offerings to keep us all boredom-busting in the great outdoors, the emirates’ hospitality, leisure and events heavyweights unveil the fruits of their labour, inviting us to discover what’s new and exciting. In October 2017, that included camel treks and hot air balloon rides, new brunches at treasured favourites like Blue Marlin and 360, and concerts from Stormzy, Gorillaz and Toni Braxton.

That issue also featured a piece on another major open-air musical event – What’s On Party in the Park, which would return for its third edition that November. Alongside The Chemical Brothers, one half of newly reformed Oasis, Liam Gallagher, headlined in 2017 and saw a chorus of 8,000-strong fans singing along to Wonderwall at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre the following month. With Oasis back in action and announcing a 2025 UK tour, could a UAE date be on the cards next year? We hope so.

Fast forward to 2024, and we’re in for another exciting month of fun in the sun. Alluring alfresco terraces at new eateries like Lana Lusa, Jamavar, and Lucia’s Mare await. For fitness fans, there’s a new workout circuit, running club and Fitness Challenge events to tackle. And in the world of music, there’s the grand opening of Ushuaïa, headlined by Calvin Harris; a retro festival of tribute acts at The Irish Village; and DJ Lui brings his deep house sound to Barasti Beach. Discover our guide to outdoor fun this October from p17.

Lana Lusa

Lana Lusa brought its classic Portuguese fare like the hearty monkfish rice and famous bacalhau to its new home down Beach Road, but an expanded dining room and idyllic terrace seating area mean there’s even more to love. A handful of mustardtiled tables can accommodate groups in the green backyard space, offering a laid-back option for enjoying a spread of Portuguese sharing plates.

THEY’LL BE THERE FOR YOU

A guide to making friends in Dubai

WORDS: SHELBY GEE

If you’re new to Dubai, firstly a big welcome – it’s scary but the first step is already done, you’re here. If you’re looking to meet new people in Dubai, then these might be some of the more fun and creative ways to do it.

THE FIRST

ONE Dubai is a rapidly growing, ever-changing beacon of multiculturalism and that means new and interesting people are everywhere. The challenge is finding out how to connect with them. Getting started can be tough, but thankfully, What’s On is here as your print and digital friend to guide you through the city, show you the ropes, and keep you informed on all the vital need-to-knows and where-to-gos.

THE ONE WITH THE DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

Facebook Groups

I know, Gen Z will be shaking their collective fists at this, but Facebook groups are still very much a thing in Dubai and are a fantastic way to find people from your home country who can level with you – people in your community who could help with moving or answering any questions you might have. They are genuinely a good way to meet people and find out information in Dubai.

Reddit

This long-serving social networking community, is one of those corners of the internet that serves as a microcosmic discussion board of everything on the internet. As part of that meta echo, you’ll find a very active subreddit, R/ Dubai – which serves as a sounding board for discussing topics, getting your regionally-focused questions answered, and for striking up conversations with like-minded folk, and finding your common interest clan.

THE ONE WITH THE EVENTFUL GET TOGETHERS

Supper

clubs

Supper clubs are a fantastic way to meet new people – there is always an interesting and wonderful mix of people who attend supper clubs. What’s On highly recommends Girl and The Goose. Chef Gabriela is wonderful and will make you feel extremely welcome. Otherwise head to whatson. ae to find out more about our favourite supper clubs across the city.

THE ONE WITH THE STRANGERS AT DINNER

Join a sports team

Dubai is an extremely active place – from running to rugby, pedal-poweredcycling to padel-powered-smashing, and if it’s a sport, it’s probably got a club to join here too. They’re a great way to get in some movement while also meeting new people.

There are incredibly fun and competitive netball, rugby, cricket, hockey, teams open to new members (check out The Exiles, or The Hurricanes). And it’s not just the team sports. The famous Gymshark Run Club has also recently launched in Dubai. See p21 for more.

Looking to fight big-city loneliness one dinner at a time? TimeLeft is new to Dubai and a fun way to get to know new people in your area. Offering events every Wednesday at 8pm, this five-person supper club takes place at restaurants across town. Signing up for the social experience is simple. Fill out a personality quiz (which is also fun to do) before being paired with a group of five people that, as per the algorithm, are like-minded and interesting, just like you.

There is a subscription package available, that costs Dhs80 per month, which will secure you a seat, otherwise, you can pay for your seat no later than the day before the dinner. Dinner costs must be covered by you. Sign up at timeleft.com.

Chef Gabriela

THE ONE WITH THE STRANGERS PERCHED AT A PUB

Dating apps not doing it for you?

Why not give Mingle DXB a go. It has been running events for three years now. The great thing about single mingle events is that this is your time to shine if you’re someone who does better in person with starting up a conversation.

While it can be initially daunting, once you get into the environment where everybody is looking to meet new people, the scariness goes away. They often host different kinds of events that aren’t only for finding romantic partners as well, so keep your eyes peeled on their socials (@mingledxb) for that.

THE ONE WITH THE WORDS OF WISDOM

It takes time

THE ONE WHERE WE FORGOT WE ACTUALLY HAD JOBS

We’re all here for the hustle, but don’t be afraid to spark up a conversation with your colleagues in the pantry, or invite them out for a post-work drink. You never know, you might find your new bestie has been sitting sitting around the corner from you this whole time.

Finding your groove and your friend group takes time in Dubai. Loneliness will pass. A golden standard for finding your rhythm typically takes about 18 months. So stick it out, you will be rewarded.

Take things slow

It’s easy to get swept up in the luxe and glamour and Dubai life, take things slowly and go at your own pace. Being your most authentic self will help you find your crew.

Smaller is better

Find your group of friends and keep them close, even if the group is only two or three – those friends might end up being worth more than gold.

LUNCH WITH CHEF SALAM DAKKAK

We caught up with the Palestinian chef-owner at her new Dubai restaurant Sufret Maryam…

Walk through the olive-hued double doors, and the first thing to catch your eye is a mesmerising portrait of chef-owner Salam Dakkak’s mother, Maryam – the heart behind both of the family-run restaurants in Dubai. Sufret Maryam, located in Wasl 51, is Chef Salam’s latest venture, offering an “elevated” take on the soul-warming Levantine cuisine that made JLT’s casual spot, Bait Maryam, such a favourite.

The scene is set with personal touches just like you’d find in a living room: a sewing machine by the window is a tribute to Maryam and an old typewriter honours Chef Salam’s father, who became the first in his village to master typing back in 1939. Palestinian art adorns the walls, including a stunning painting of the front door of the house where Chef Salam grew up.

Every corner – from the olive tree centrepiece to the stone arches and green and beige hues – tells the story of Levantine heritage and home. These special touches provide a glimpse into Chef Salam’s roots and set the tone for a warm, welcoming dining experience. As she perfectly puts it: “Sufret Maryam is not just a restaurant; it is a home. I try very hard to treat the people who come here to feel at home and to enjoy all the moments – the food, the atmosphere, the art, the service. We are in one circle.”

FUN FACT

If you could cook for any celebrity, who would it be?

Chef Salam: “Anthony Bourdain. He is an amazing guy, very human, and, of course, a chef. I would have loved to meet him.”

Despite being an elevated take on Levantine dishes, the menu is anything but pretentious. For our lunch, we tried a selection of starters and cold mezze washed down with refreshing mocktails (we recommend trying the Marameye iced tea). The hummus (Dhs36) is creamy, velvety, and gloriously zingy, dolloping

WHAT TO ORDER:

Chef Salam’s must-try dishes

•Khobez Al Bait (Dhs41)

•La’moshet Maryam (Dhs380)

perfectly onto the warm pieces of bread fresh from the oven. The small, tightly-wrapped vine leaves (Dhs52) arrive in a bed of garlic yoghurt, sprinkled with pomegranate and topped with crispy bread for a moreish balance of flavours and textures.

The Khobez Al Bait (Dhs41) is another star dish; 48 hour fermented, pillowy, heatinflated bread topped with zaatar, confit garlic, tomato salsa and labneh creme creates an aromatic, comforting bite that hits all the right notes. Be sure to try the simple yet glorious Farm To Table salad (Dhs47) for an authentic dish you’d find in any Levantine home, brimming with fresh garden ingredients like tomatoes, grapes, zaatar, rocca, lettuce, and halloumi.

As a shining example of the country’s homegrown dining scene, Sufret Maryam perfectly embodies the essence of the UAE: A home away from home. It feels like a comforting embrace, with every aspect telling a story of heritage, of gathering around a family table, and of sharing the simple joy of good food. Sufret Maryam is a family affair, an honest dream come true, and it doesn’t get more real than that.

Sufret Maryam, Wasl 51, Jumeirah 1, daily 12pm to 12am. @sufretmaryam

REVIEW:

STAY BY YANNICK ALLÉNO

Refined French fare where detail reigns supreme...

What defines a 2 Michelin Star restaurant? As per the guide, a restaurant is awarded 2 Stars, “when the personality and talent of the chef are evident in their expertly crafted dishes; their food is refined and inspired.”

It’s with this in mind that we arrive at Stay, one of only four 2 Star restaurants in Dubai. Housed inside the opulent One&Only The Palm, Stay is the brainchild of Yannick Alléno, whose restaurants around the world boast a collective 16 Michelin Stars.

Stay is intimate – the space is filled with around 15 tables – but still oozes splendour: double height ceilings dance with huge chandeliers, a grand bar graces one side of the restaurant where bottles of wine handpicked by the sommelier sit on ice, and generous armchairs in houndstooth surround tables laid with freshly ironed tablecloths. It’s all very quintessentially French.

While there’s a concise a la carte menu, guests are encouraged to opt for one of two tasting menus – either the four-course ‘Emotion’ menu (Dhs950 food only, Dhs1,600 with wine pairing) or the six-course ‘Experience’ menu (Dhs1,250 food only, Dhs2,150 with wine pairing). We opt for the four-course menu, but switch the main course from the chicken to the Wagyu from the Experience menu. It’s a welcome feeling to be able to curate our own courses.

Music is soft and melodic, so as not to detract from the culinary experience. A special mention should be given to the creamy, salty, golden butter, sourced from a small farm in Burgundy of just 20 cows, that supplies all of Alléno’s restaurants worldwide.

The next course, an amouse bouche of blanc-manger with almond, arrives in a martini glass, with a side of neatly diced fresh peach and a citusy blackcurrant vinaigrette. The blanc-manger is a little tasteless, and while the peaches are juicy, the course combined isn’t particularly memorable.

Our first course arrives and fares much better, a steamed cheese souffle that’s light and spongy, the subtle cheese flavour of the souffle giving way for a rich albufeira sauce. It’s topped with two squares of foie gras for added indulgence, and it’s a high-impact and flavourfilled dish and we use a spoon to ensure we finish every mouthful.

Before we begin, crisp glasses of Louis Roederer Rosé Champagne, and a neat tartlet of sour cream topped with dehydrated beef arrives to prepare our palate. It’s crunchy and creamy and leaves us hungry for more.

The attention to detail is everywhere.

As we move through the courses, the service

is standout. Our dishes are placed on the table in sync, and cleared away at a welcome pace, and the wine pairings by sommelier Danijela Tesic are unique bottles we’ve largely never tried before, but enhance each dish.

Next up, fresh and meaty chunks of blue lobster are given added flavour with a bone marrow crust, and the white wine sauce is a welcome addition to the flavour combination.

Our main is an outstanding demonstration of Stay’s chef de cuisine Ilya Evdokimov’s true culinary skill. Fifty layers of portobello mushroom and Wagyu beef layered into a delicate millefeuille are presented in front of us, given added wow-factor when chef Evdokimov arrives tableside to swirl it with a parsley puree.

Dessert is sweet and delicious, and the pastry team’s prowess is firmly on show with the ‘monte bianco’, a mountain-shaped meringue and ice cream served with a cognac jelly.

The entire dining experience takes around two-and-a-half hours, which feels like a welltimed tasting menu experience, and while we leave full, we leave feeling like we’ve truly tried some of the city’s best – and most unique – dishes.

Stay by Yannick Alléno, One&Only The Palm, West Crescent, Palm Jumeirah, 6.30pm to 12am, Tues to Sun. Tel: (0)4 440 1010.

HASHMI BARBEQUE RESTAURANT

A

legacy restaurant deserving of its stripes

Hashmi Barbeque Restaurant is the true picture of a family owned, family run establishment. The owners, three brothers, are on the floor themselves, walkie talkies dangling from their hips as they navigate the dinner time rush. On our visit, the restaurant is full, and something tells me this is no novelty. Even the diners stride in with the confidence of age-old regulars –some with designer bags and some with rustic, dusty sandals.

Hashmi came from a family in Kenya, opened in the city centre of Nairobi in 1978 and in Dubai in 2020, but you’ll find in their joint all nationalities and races. It has a sort of equalising atmosphere – we all kneel to the same height in front of great food. The fare in question is charcoal grilled meats, which they are the masters of, spiced Indian style. The seekh kababs and the lamb chops and the smoked murg tikkas.

THE AMBIANCE

The decor is nothing special – it has the fittings and sparkly wallpaper of an old joint that went through a recent makeover. It also seems as if two separate spaces have been merged into one, perhaps to accommodate the growing notoriety.

We’re handed a menu. The chatter is loud. The cooks are working away behind a glass screen, as fires roar in their faces and the smell of spiced smoke wafts towards your vicinity.

THE FOOD

Upon our server’s recommendations, we order the chooza chicken (Dhs85), the mutton kebabs (Dhs35), the lamb chops (Dhs85), the mutton khima chapati (Dhs35) and a plate of pillipilli chips, complete with three different types of chutneys, yogurt dip, plain naan and butter naan. It’s a feast.

The chicken is a signature, grilled to tender-on-the-inside and crispy-on-theoutside perfection. The prominent flavour

is that of spicy smoke, built by a combination of a yogurt and lemon marinade, subtle and buttery as the taste develops with an actual kick towards the end.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

No abs, only kebabs and only from Hashmi.

The mutton kebabs are more meaty in flavour – you can tell the ingredients used in this dish are kept to a minimum, but you taste some garlic, some onion, some green chilli there. They melt in your mouth as you take a bite.

The lamb chops are our personal favourites, fatty, heavy and infinitely flavourful, with a taste of char and Kashmiri chilli and a welcome freshness. Nothing is grey or slate-y. The chips are the most interesting – the flavour confuses me. Sometimes I think about salt and sometimes of the cheese dust popcorn at your nearby VOX cinemas, but they’re delicious and moreish nontheless.

After we’re done with our meal, we stop to thank one of the brothers, a smiling man who accepts our wishes warmly and asks us to come again. I realise this is why this name has been alive for 45 years. Great food and great people who make that food.

Hashmi Barbeque, Barsha, Tues to Thurs, 12.30pm to 3pm, 6pm to 11pm, Fri, 5pm to 11pm, Sat and Sun, 12.30pm to 11pm.

ART

| THEATRE | FILM | MUSIC

CULTURE // MOVIES FILMED IN THE UAE

Words: Miles Buckeridge

The combination of futuristic cityscapes, wild otherworldly desert expanses and a talented pool of filmmaking professionals living right here – it’s no wonder the UAE plays the starring role in the staging of so many big-screen stories. These are just some of the most famous examples of the UAE providing backdrops and stealing scenes.

MAKING A SCENE

11 movies filmed right here in the UAE...

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)

2This sequel to the hugely popular 2001 movie starring Will Smith, didn’t hit quite as well with the critics, but it is absolutely watchable if you let yourself embrace the fun of it all. As you might expect from a film that puts humanity on the brink of annihilation, there’s not a lot of happy imagery for planet Earth – Dubai’s big moment comes in the form of the Burj Khalifa being up-ended and used to shish kebab a section of London’s South Bank. Those aliens really did us dirty.

Gran Turismo (2023)

1

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023)

This seventh Mission: Impossible movie marks the third time the all-thrill-no-fill Tom Cruise vehicle has rolled into the UAE, and it’s an Abu Dhabi double dip. There are the scenes shot inside (and, slight spoiler, Tom Cruise doing his fave cardio on top of) the stunning new Terminal A complex in Zayed International Airport, where the IMF team are trying to intercept the key to a terrifying advanced AI entity. Then there are the Rub’ al Khali ambush sequences where Ethan Hunt (Cruise) provides an extraction service for rogue agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson).

This isn’t a movie adaptation of the popular Sony game. The game doesn’t have a plotline and whilst you may argue that might have improved the Assassin’s Creed movie, we wouldn’t dare comment. It’s the story of how the Gran Turismo videogame changed a young man’s fortunes. This is the miraculous real-life tale of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe). Jann was an elite gamer, a Gran Turismo grandmaster who was recruited into a racing academy on a marketing exec’s (Orlando Bloom) gut intuition that good gamers might make good drivers. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp and the cast list includes Madekwe, Bloom, David Harbour, and Josha Stradowski. One of the movie’s key scenes is filmed right here in the Dubai Autodrome, faithfully retelling a turning point in Mardenborough’s career.

Dune (2020) and Dune 2 (2024)

The Dune series is director Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of the classic Frank Herbert science fiction novel of the same name. This time around, the cast is headed up by Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jason Momoa. The story follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a young man thrust into a power struggle on a distant planet, where two houses battle for control of the galaxy’s most precious resource, a ‘spice’ called Melange. The main location for the action is the desert planet of Arrakis played, rather nobly by Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter. The third installment of the story is scheduled to hit screens late in 2026.

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

When the location scouts were searching for a futuristic cityscape to set the third installment of this sci-fi reboot saga, Dubai must have stuck out immediately. Its Tomorrowland architecture, fast cars, smart city credentials and Metro stations that look straight outta 3020 make it the perfect candidate for offering a glimpse of what’s to come. So much so, that while many of the scenes were digitally enhanced, we recognised countless locations. JLT, DIFC and the Burj Khalifa all star alongside the cast’s own big names, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Anton Yelchin.

4

Mission: Impossible –Ghost Protocol (2011)

Five out of five sweaty palms for the stunts in this, the fourth Mission Impossible movie. The MI gang are in Dubai to intercept the sale of some launch codes and prevent nuclear war, culminating in an incredible free-climbing Burj Khalia scene that more than makes up for the sprinkling of artistic license used in the film’s geography of Dubai. We’re specifically referring to Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) running (quel suprise) directly out of DIFC and into some unspecified Old Dubai souk, without a single abra ride in between.

Furious

7 (2015)

Love them or hate them, Fast and Furious movies are a big deal at the box office. And the seventh installment of the franchise, Furious 7, takes some of its road rage out on the cinematic streets of our capital. In one of the more physics-defying scenes from a series known for playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) take a Lykan Hypersport car and jump between Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Twice. This movie was sadly Paul Walker’s last, as he tragically passed away during filming. Impressive CGI rendering was used to fill in his final scenes to make for an emotional farewell.

8

6 Underground (2019)

There’s some pretty simple box-office arithmetic that goes into putting Michael Bay and Ryan Reynolds together. You know you’re going to get epic cinematography backed up by frantic action scenes and sassy dialogue, delivered with trademark Reynolds panache, which neatly sums up this particular high energy, super fun Netflix movie. And a lot of it was filmed right here in Abu Dhabi.

Mission: Impossible

Fallout

(2018) OK, forgive us, this is a bit of a cop-out. Despite the movie racking up more destinations than a gap-year student with a trust fund, there’s only one scene filmed here in the UAE. And they used CGI to make it look like Paris. It’s during Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) ill-fated lightning-besieged HALO (high altitude, low opening) parachute jump. As an interesting bit of film trivia for you, it took Cruise 106 jumps to get those precious few moments of screen time.

Syriana (2005)

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)

We always knew the force was strong with Abu Dhabi, but did you know the planet of Jakku – where we first meet Rey (Daisy Ridley), the central protagonist of the Skywalker Star Wars Trilogy – is actually Abu Dhabi? Or at least that’s where those scenes were filmed. Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises of all time, so having your location immortalised as part of the saga is a pretty big deal. Abu Dhabi actually gets a name check in the movie too, during a conversation with companion Finn (John Boyega), Rey refers to a location called ‘Liwa Outpost’. A kestral run we can plug into our sat nav, and make in less than 12 parsecs.

11

This multi-layered, fractallytold political thriller was the first big Hollywood production to formally shoot in Dubai. And whilst the external scenes shot here provide the backdrop for a fictional Middle Eastern state (and given the subject matter, that’s a good thing) – we can still spot some unmistakable Dubai locations in the finished product. Syriana, written and directed by Stephen Gaghan, has an outstanding cast lead by George Clooney, Matt Damon, Jeffrey Wright, William Hurt, and Christopher Plummer and tells the story of a jilted US oil firm trying to balance its books with some shady dealings. Thoroughly worth a watch.

Why the UAE is so much more than just bling

Diamonds to sand UAE bling

When you tell people you live in the UAE, you’ve probably heard this question at least once: ‘Do you go to school on a camel?’. No, sir. We do not While 80 per cent of the country is a desert, in the short span of 53 years since the country was born, we have come a long way. From camels, abras, and dhows, to towering skyscrapers with unreal designs, top restaurants and bars, man-made islands, and more, it’s all intermixed with reflections of the past showcasing a country that has something for everyone.

The UAE is home to countless malls, which makes it a heaven for shopaholics. You are sure to find whatever your heart desires with countless brands available from across the world. You can look at the UAE and see plenty of shiny, flashy things – from its fancy record-breaking buildings, world class attractions, hypercars, manmade islands, celebrity visitors, yachts, bespoke jewellers, crypto conventions, five-star hotels and TV shows that focus on certain extravagant lifestyles. But if you think this is all that it stands for, that there is nothing beneath this bling-studded exterior – you’re not seeing the true essence of Dubai, and you’re all the poorer for it.

Natural wonders

The UAE is home to some of the best nature spots in the region, perfect for those who want to swap city skylines for views of golden hue dunes. These dreamy desert landscapes are found throughout the UAE with picturesque scenes that are sure to find their way onto your Instagram. From The Empty Quarter in Abu Dhabi to Mleiha in Sharjah, and Al Badayer desert, these glorious deserts are a must-see for both visitors and tourists alike. If you want more green, there’s Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, The Mangrove National Park and Jabeel Hafeet in Abu Dhabi, Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary and Hatta.

The culture scene

Nightlife haven

The UAE (cue spotlight on Dubai) has a thriving nightlife scene with some of the most luxurious nightlife venues in the world. 1OAK, Soho Garden Meydan, Blu Dubai, Sky2.0, there’s something for everyone including some exclusive beach clubs, bars and lounges from across the world that have set up home in the UAE. If you want nightlife in the capital, there’s The Trilogy by Buddha Bar, Lock, Stock & Barrel, White and more. But for those who crave a performance on the more cultural front…

Cultural performances

Dubai Opera, Coca-Cola Arena, Etihad Arena, and The Agenda – opera aficionados will have plenty of world-class shows making their way for our entertainment. In the past, we have been treated to top Broadway and West End shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton, The Lion King and Chicago. Besides this, we have had top singers and bands gracing our stages including most recently, Enrique Iglesias, Peggy Gou, Alicia Keys and there’s still plenty more to come. Stay tuned to whatson.ae

Fine-dining establishments

It goes without saying, but the dining scene in the UAE is probably one of the best in the world, attracting resident foodies and visitors alike. While a google search will bring up some top-notch results reflecting restaurants in the World’s 50 Best or the Michelin Guide…

No frill restaurants

There are plenty of homegrown heroes

and no-frill restaurants that bring up five-star ratings, whether it’s on Google or word of mouth. We’ve personally heard stories of people driving all the way across own to Old Dubai for a cup of karak, or a taste of Goan food from Karama. The top names that need to be on your list in Dubai are Ravi, Eric’s, Little Lamb, Jaffer Bhai’s, Al Safadi, Al Fanar, and in Abu Dhabi – Kahani, Moti Mahal and Abu Al Afwal - but be prepared to queue.

A path of history and progression

Skyscrapers in Dubai

Burj Khalifa, JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, Gevora Hotel, Princess Tower, Princess Tower and more - these skyscrapers all contribute to the United Arab Emirates being one of the top five countries in the world with the tallest buildings. The UAE’s first skyscraper, the Dubai World Trade Centre (previously called Sheikh Rashid Tower) was the region’s first high-rise tower standing at just 39 floors. It was inaugurated at 1979 (sharing its birthday with What’s On), just eight years after the UAE was established. But our skylines weren’t always dominated by tall fancy buildings…

Heritage paths

Before this, the UAE was home to traditional Arabian architecture with influences from Iran, India, and Islamic designs. You can wander along the lanes in Old Dubai in the heritage quarters along the Dubai Creek and explore this wonderful architecture. One of the top sights to see in Dubai when it reopens, is Al Fahidi Fort –one of the oldest structure in Dubai built in 1787. In Abu Dhabi, head to Qasr Al Hosn, one of the oldest and most significant building in the capital, or take a walk down Abu Dhabi’s Zayed the First Street, which is home to a number of buildings on Abu Dhabi’s list of 64 modern heritage sites.

Saaniya Abbas

The rising queen of Dubai’s comedy scene

Words: Miles Buckeridge

You’ve got to be a special type of person to even want to make it as a stand-up comedian. It’s a gladiatorial occupation. Getting up on stage for your material, your soul, your delivery to be laid bare for the approval of a Colosseum crowd. And the path that led you to this theatre of thumbs up or down was not based on anything so romantic as, say, a blood-sworn oath of vengeance. Just your own selfless desire to bring a fragile and fleeting joy to a room full of strangers. If it goes well, sure, you’re a hero – fall, and you’re thrown to the lions. It makes you wonder, what sort of person would actively choose this?

Art director/copywriter-turned-comedian/podcast host, Saaniya Abbas is one of the most exciting talents on Dubai’s homegrown stand-up scene right now. A rising star frequently spotted at the UAE’s premier comedy nights, she also flexed her funny bones at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. But rather than coming from the classic, cookie cutter, comic cliché of being the class clown, Saaniya’s comedic roots appear to have more artistic origins. “I was far too introverted to be the funny one in school,” she tells us, “my internal monologue was always hilarious (to me), but I kept it to myself. I first discovered my love for performing arts through acting. As a shy and awkward kid, pretending to be someone else gave me a sense of relief.”

Big in Dubai

A proud ambassador of expat life in the UAE, Abbas says, “I simply could not live anywhere else” and credits certain characteristics of the country’s own stage with giving her the opportunity to hone her craft, “because the comedy scene is still growing, I was able to get a lot of stage time as a newcomer. That gave me the chance to develop quickly and find my voice.” And more than that, “everyone involved in the arts right now is actively shaping its cultural landscape, which is an incredible honour to be part of.”

Pain is art

Saaniya’s comedic heroes “Vir Das, Ricky Gervais, Andrew Schulz and Michael Macintyre” cut an ecclectic bunch, but after watching her perform – you can see how elements of each might have

“I WAS FAR TOO INTROVERTED TO BE THE FUNNY ONE IN SCHOOL”

flavoured aspects of her style. And like all artists, her act has gone through some big formative fires “I started off joking about my childhood, especially my mother, who’s quite the character. But a lot of my early material felt generic … Then, about six months into my comedy career, I went through a divorce. It was a very difficult thing to go through. Writing about it became my way of coping, and strangely, those jokes got the biggest laughs … I learned how to turn my pain into funny stories, and by making people laugh, I transform that pain into joy.”

That inspirational pain can occasionally come from more physical sources too, “I had a colonoscopy last month, and as I was glaring up at the sky, wondering, “Why me?!” the jokes started coming. And just like that, I had my answer. It’s probably one of my favourite bits I’ve ever written.”

Cab home for cutie

But what is Saaniya Abbas like off stage, when the lights go down and the crowds have gone home? “My dog Eleanor brings me a lot of joy. I often sit on my keyboard and play songs at home by myself. Sometimes I’ll record them, but more often than not, they’re just for me.”

Followers of her brilliantly-curated Instagram account, @saaniyax will know that the comic often wryly conceptualises the world as being composed of ‘cuties’ and ‘anti-cuties’. “It’s very easy to be a cutie: be wholesome, kind, and loving toward others and yourself. The key is to just not be a jerk. Jerks are anti-cuties.” What’s next for Saaniya? “I just finished a UK tour this summer and I’ll be doing my next tour in India in December. 2025 will be a busy one as I’m planning my Australia tour and second USA tour. I still have a full time day job so I have no idea how. Wish me luck!” For comedy night appearances, podcast drops and tour dates, make sure you’re following @saaniyax on Instagram.

SETTING INTENTIONS

There’s 100 days (or thereabouts) left until 2025. Don’t wait until the New Year to make resolutions – get your head in the game today. We asked leadership and growth coach, David Singleton, founder of Oraculi (oraculi.co), for his top tips

WO: What are some easy daily habits people can put in place to help achieve their goals?

There’s three things I’d say are a great way to start:

•Organise your day by listing tasks in order of importance and focus on completing them accordingly. Have a ‘to don’t’ list alongside your ‘to do’ list. Don’t be a hero.

•Dedicate time to learning something new related to your goals, whether through reading or listening to a podcast.

•Spend 10 minutes each day reflecting on your goals and the progress you’ve made, keeping a journal is helpful.

What are some of the most popular techniques you use to help people get ahead?

I start by examining the role of the saboteur – what’s holding people back. We understand character strengths and

how can we use these to counter the role of the saboteur. Part of the process is also a deep dive into the motivational mind to understand one’s mindset at the time to enable us to build powerful goals.

Interview: Alice Holtham-Pargin

What’s one question you ask all of your clients to establish their ambitions?

Think of a time when you were at your peak performance, what was it about that time, who was around you, how did you feel, and what would you like to replicate?

Now think of your goals, what’s holding you back, what shall we take from this time of peak performance? When will you achieve these goals, go there, go into the future and write down your current state; you are thriving and deeply fulfilled, how does it feel, what have you done?

Once we have confronted what’s been holding us back and created an ambitious vision with authentic purpose driven goals, we can write and then bring to life our future memories in the now with a vision statement that influences present actions with an acute awareness of how current actions shape future outcomes.

If you want to worry less and enjoy life more, what are 3 things people can do?

•Regular mindfulness practice, breathwork, ice bathing or meditation can significantly reduce stress and enhance overall wellbeing.

•Exercise, eat, and sleep well. Engage in physical activities you enjoy; it boosts endorphins and helps clear the mind. Eat well to fuel your body, while quality sleep restores both your mental and physical health, making you more resilient and focused. These practices together uplifts your overall well-being, enabling you to handle life’s stresses more effectively and maintain a clearer, more positive mindset.

•Preserve your energy, spend quality time with loved ones and people who bring you happiness and inspiration.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

When I worked between the USA and UK, I asked my coach a similar question, and he said “believe in yourself, and you will win”. It inspired my most commonly used mantra ‘til today: “Be the leader today you want to be tomorrow.” Have confidence and belief in yourself that you can be at the next level you want to be, believe in the ‘power of possible’, understand your limiting beliefs know your limits and embrace your character strengths.

IFINESSING FITNESS

The highlights of Dubai Fitness Challenge 2024

naugurated by His Highness

Sheikh Hamdan bin

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai back in 2017, the Dubai Fitness Challenge AKA the DFC, AKA the 30×30 – returns to Dubai this October.

This will be the eighth edition of the annual event, which takes place between October 26 to November 24. Its aim – to get Dubai residents doing at least 30 minutes of exercise for 30 consecutive days. The DFC is an initiative for everyone, but makes special consideration for those who aren’t working out as much as the medical community suggests we ought to.

It takes a village

The science on the long-term benefits of regular fitness sessions is in – making seismic, interconnected, positive impacts across a wide variety of physical, mental, health and happiness markers. Plus it’s the most efficient route to feeling confident in lycra. If that’s your kind of thing.

And look, we appreciate the gym is not for everyone; we understand and can relate to those suffering from school PETSD flashbacks; and yes, crossfit generally is exhausting (mostly because of the amount of time you have to spend telling everyone you do crossfit).

But because this is Dubai, the DFC isn’t just an empty public health marketing campaign. Months of planning and expert consultation goes into coming up with a calendar of genuinely incredible (largely free) fitness events, tailored to represent a full spectrum of sporting genres, ability levels, special interests, intensities and goal-based outcomes.

Dubai Fitness Challenge favourites

Last year there were 2.4 million participants across the various DFC races, classes, live sessions and fitness activities. Returning events for 2024 include the Dubai Stand-Up Paddle session on Saturday, November 2 which will take place on the serene waters of Hatta Dam; Dubai Ride – which take over a section of the Sheikh Zayed Road for an iconic sweat sesh powered by foot and pedal on November 10; and the Dubai Run, will once again serve as the DFC grand finale on Sunday, 24 November.

We’ll also get to see the return of the

Community Fitness Hubs and Villages, where you can take part in a full gamut of different sport sessions, fitness events and wellness activities.

What’s new for 2024?

In line with the true spirit of fitness, the DFC is always pushing its limits. Building on its last set of reps, aiming for a PB with even heavier schedule of fun ways to get gains.

New events will include a Plus500 Half Marathon through Downtown Dubai (October 27); several T100 triathlon events; a 5k Music Run at Meydan Race Course set for November 16; a 3,5 and 10k Women’s Run at Expo; an Arabian Warrior Obstacle Course Race queued up for October 26. Expect to see separate triathlon events, a whole wellness festival and a focus on the increasingly popular sport of padel.

And there’s still a huge amount more that’s still to be announced, stay tuned to whatson.ae for those all important updates.

THREE FITNESS HACKS TO HELP YOU WITH THOSE 30S

Gamify your gains

Tracking apps like Apple Fitness and Strava, aren’t just great for keeping you accountable, they also make it fun. Earn trophies, chase personal bests, and share your milestones with your friends. A smart watch enhances the experience by offering better monitoring capabilities and progress metrics. Trust us, it’s a game changer.

Walking counts

If you’re just starting off your fitness journey, looking for an activity that’s relatively low impact, need some active recovery or you’re just not feeling up for a 10k time trial today, walking counts. It gets the heart pumping, burns calories and gives you time to meditate on your goals.

Consistency is key

There is no amount of preworkout that can get you to a sub fourhour marathon on day one of your fitness regime. You have to work on that stamina, and the only proven method for doing this, is consistently building on what’s gone before. There’s no shame in walking parts of your run, you’ll get there. Stay focused, stay motivated, stay on it. You’ve got this.

Words: Alice Holtham-Pargin

The Ice House

The newest addition to Index Mall takes Dubai’s new found love of cold water immersion, and puts it into a zen-inducing studio in DIFC. Known for their multitude of physical and mental benefits, ice baths are proven to reduce inflammation, improve circulation and increase alertness. A contemporary and relaxing environment to test your own icy limits, your ice bath session can last between three to five minutes, and takes place in an Odin Pro ice bath in your own private suite space. The whole experience lasts just 15 minutes – so you can be in and out on your lunch break – and sessions are priced at Dhs120. Couple it with a 45-minute infrared sauna and it’s Dhs220. theicehouse.ae

What’s new in wellness

Sweat, steam and shiver your way through what’s on offer at these new spots…

Sage

Newly opened in Jumeirah, Sage is a clean and minimalistic wellness space, peppered with plants and trees for added relaxation. There’s a duo of yoga studios for group classes; the upper studio has Burj Khalifa views and space for up to 20; plus a private yoga studio for four yogis, and a beautifully secluded, soundproof meditation room designed for two. You can also book an array of healing massages and therapies in the neutral-toned treatment rooms, or relax in the spa, which features a steam, sauna and cold plunge. Book the welcome pass and you’ll get a yoga class, 30-minute facial massage, 30-minute neck and shoulder massage, and spa access, all for Dhs600. villasage.ae

This welcoming wellness studio in Mirdif Avenue Mall is the first studio in the Middle East with Miniformers, a compact version of the traditional Megaformer. Mini yet mighty, it delivers the same intense full body workout Pilates fans know and love, designed to tone muscles and improve fitness. But it’s not just Pilates. WELLNESS // TRIED AND TESTED

Words:

LTRIED & TESTED

Live long, in prosperity

We fitness check the Longevity Wellness Hub

et’s begin with a little thought experiment. Imagine you buy an old decorative oil lamp from the Creekside souks. You polish it and, perhaps a little derivatively for this part of the world, a genie pops out. He gives you the “no resurrections or wishing for more wishes” disclaimer, and then asks you to call out your most heartfelt desires. Surveys predict that you’re likely to ask for some combination of the following three things: wealth, beauty and living for a very long time.

The founding principles of Longevity Wellness Hub are to make at least one of those wishes its command. Set up by Dani Afiouni in 2019, the one-stop wellness shop tasks itself with empowering its clientele to “Age Well and Live Better”. But is that possible? And if so, what are they doing to achieve it?

I’ve checked into their Al Quoz hub on an otherwise unremarkable Thursday morning to find out. Its first spell is cast immediately. The interior is a dramatic scene change from the sparks and barks of the workshops outside. It’s a warm green sanctum of Gaian meditation, a calming ohm of canopy and remedy. But the Longevity Wellness Hub doesn’t claim to pursue its noble goals by the power of transcendental yoga and breathwork alone

(though they’re a good place to start). Here you have access to a Stark-Tower-tier range of futuristic life-enriching gadgetry, there are the ice baths for which Longevity is probably best known (they create and sell their own brand, as well as having a mobile unit); an infrared sauna; facilities for compression lymphatic drainage and magnetic field stimulation; contraptions that enable full spectrum light therapy and redlight functional training; it offers diagnostic tools and practical therapies; and then there are the practitioners and coaches that are arguably the most vital of wellness components.

After a consultation with the charismatic and positively-charged Laura, my soul already feels five kilos lighter. I can’t read auras, but if I could sense Laura’s in any way – it’s desert rain. Longevity has a large consumer base of athletes and I’ve signed up to try one of their favourite machines, the hyperbaric chamber. I spend 45 minutes relaxing in high pressure, high oxygen environment and the effects are extraordinary. I feel calm and energised, bouncy almost as I settle in to treatment number two, sound and light frequency therapy. Headphones go on, my eyes close and the headset rattles off a rapid sequence of rhythmic LED flashes. By minute two, I’m already hurtling face-first through a neon forest. The light that’s hitting my eyelids is just white, but my mind is painting it in full OLED technicolour. I take off the visor and leave the spirit world, reality is a steady, if slightly more dull consolation. Will I live longer now? Only time will tell, but I’m committed to working on my breathing exercises, eating better, taking semi-regular ice plunges, meditating and all of that means I’m giving it my best personal shot.

Al Quoz, Umm Suqeim Main Street, Warehouse S6, daily 7.30am to 9.30pm, prices vary based on treatment package. Tel: (0)54 565 6021. @longevity.wellness.hub

A DIFFERENT SIDE TO TO Barcelona

They may not draw in giant crowds, but these under-the-radar attractions are every bit as intriguing as the big-hitters

Barcelona’s allure extends far beyond its famous landmarks and tourist magnets. While the city’s golden beaches and iconic structures like La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell captivate millions, there’s a treasure trove of alternative attractions waiting to be discovered. For those keen to experience a different side of Barcelona, consider these lesser-known gems that offer a deeper, more authentic taste of the city.

Discover stunning architecture beyond Gaudi

Sure, Antoni Gaudí’s masterpieces, like La Pedrera and the Sagrada Familia, are must-sees. However, Barcelona’s architectural wonders extend beyond the famed Modernist icons. The Torre Agbar, a strikingly colourful and cocoon-shaped skyscraper designed by Louvre Abu Dhabi architect Jean Nouvel, offers a fresh perspective. Its Mirador Torre Glòries (miradortorreglories.com) observation deck provides panoramic views and an interactive artwork called Cloud Cities, adding a unique twist to the classic city skyline experience.

Trade in the city bike tour for a sunrise paddle excursion

Forget the helmet and rusty bike – swap them for a peaceful sunrise stand-up paddle group tour instead. Just a fiveminute walk from Poblenou, you and your crew can catch the stunning sunrise from your boards. Paddleboarding is easy on the cardio and gives you a fresh view of Barcelona from the calm waters. You can book this chill experience via Airbnb Experiences for just Dhs114 per person – a perfect way to start your day.

Explore a less frenzied food market

While La Boqueria is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings, it can be overwhelming. For a more relaxed market experience, head to El Mercat del Ninot (mercatdelninot. com). This recently renovated gem in the Eixample neighbourhood boasts high ceilings and an airy layout that makes shopping and dining a breeze. Stop by La Bikineria for an inventive twist on the classic “bikini” ham and cheese toasted sandwich.

Enjoy rooftop views, not cable cars

Skip the crowded Montjuïc cable car up the mountain and head to one of Barcelona’s chic hotel rooftops for stunning city vistas. The Casa Bonay (casabonay.com) rooftop, with its verdant decor, live music, and vibrant atmosphere, provides a tranquil retreat. Sip on expertly crafted cocktails and take in panoramic views of the city – something that you definitely couldn’t do in a cable car.

Take a free street art tour

While El Raval might not be as polished as some of Barcelona’s other neighbourhoods, it’s a vibrant area known for its street art. Wandering through El Raval, you’ll encounter an array of murals, graffiti, and urban art that reflect the district’s dynamic and multicultural character. Free street art tours (barcelonastreetstyletour.com) are available for those interested in exploring this creative side of the city, providing an immersive experience into Barcelona’s contemporary art scene.

Try top non-touristy tapas

Tapas are a quintessential part of Barcelona’s culinary scene, but many tourist-trap tapas bars serve uninspired fare. For an authentic experience, visit La Bodegueta (labodeguetarambla.com) in Eixample. This time-honoured spot delivers quality, classic tapas such as jamón ibérico and huevos rotos – fried eggs on chips with various toppings. This bar’s commitment to traditional flavours ensures a genuine taste of Barcelona’s rich gastronomic heritage.

WHERE TO STAY

Grand Hyatt Barcelona

Swap the city’s hustle for the serene elegance of Alta

The Grand Hyatt Barcelona, an evolved version of the iconic Princesa Sofia, which first opened its doors in 1975, stands as a fresh update on a cherished city landmark. The hotel, which only had its grand opening in April earlier this year, subtly hints at contemporary elegance, with a design that’s clean and crisp. The standout feature of the property is its inviting pool deck. The narrow aquamarine pool, flanked by towering potted palms, creates a serene retreat perfect for when your feet are tired of exploring. [Note: There are only a handful of sunbeds, so be prepared to hustle in the morning for your spots].

In contrast to the other Grand Hyatt properties in Europe, this Barcelona location distinguishes itself with its innovative design. Wisely, the Hyatt

gave the hotel a stylish spruce-up from the bottom up, introducing a range of new dining experiences, including the fantastic rooftop Peruvian restaurant Maymanta and Leña steakhouse, along with a tapas bar and coffee shop, enhancing the culinary offerings of the hotel.

Inside, the Grand Hyatt Barcelona features 465 meticulously designed guestrooms, each showcasing a sophisticated blend of Art Deco elegance with a hint of sixties flair. While many of Barcelona’s smart hotels are down in the bustle near the sea, the Grand Hyatt Barcelona is in the gently civilised heart of Alta, close to major attractions such as the Monastery of Pedralbes and the Camp Nou football stadium where Barcelona FC plays its home games. Yet, it remains pleasantly distanced from the tourist-heavy areas. An ideal hideaway.

Entry-level room rates start at Dhs1,385 per night. The King Studio Suite (pictured) starts at Dhs2,285 per night.

Words: Aarti Saundalkar

An estimated 1.3 billion people experience some impairment - that’s around 16 per cent of the global population. And although they’re just as keen to travel and explore the world as any other arbitrarily composed group, they can face limiting barriers from time to time. One region that’s really taking the idea of inclusive travel seriously is the Rhineland-Palatinate state in southeast Germany, just under two hours from Frankfurt.

The Rhineland-Palatinate came into existence after the Second World War – the result of a merger of three historically separate parts of Prussia, Hesse and Bavaria. It is known for its evergreen forests, lush vineyards, quaint villages, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and everyone is sure to find something to love, and we do mean everyone.

Things to do

Say

Hallo to Germany’s oldest city, Trier

Founded in 16 BCE during the reign of Roman Emperor Augustus, Trier is Germany’s oldest city. It’s bursting with layered culture and and is home to several well-preserved Roman structures.

If you have limited time in this stunning city, visit the Cathedral Church of St. Peter – the oldest episcopal brick-built basilica in Germany, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring interiors including a grand baroque ceiling, a stunning ‘swallow’s nest’ organ and other relics. Next to the cathedral is the Church of Our Lady in Trier, also a UNESCO list heritage site, and one of the earliest churches built in French High Gothic style outside of France. Inside, you’ll be immersed in a mystical haze of light from the gorgeous modern stain glass windows around the church. Sadly, the original stain glass windows

were destroyed from World War II. If you have a tour guide with you, ask about the story of the McDonald Peace Windows, and get ready to be impressed.

For museum fans, after your snaps of the Porta Nigra – yet another UNESCO World Heritage site, head to the Museum Simeonstift Trier, which is packed with art and cultural treasures from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. It is divided into sections and you can easily spend two to three hours exploring it. This museum is on the right track to providing a barrier-free experience for all its visitors from elevators to braille, a ‘blind kit’ which contains cross-media materials such as reliefs, models, and audio files, so the visually impaired are able to enjoy the museum. There are also video files with ASL explanations.

A short distance away you’ll find the Palastgarten. The pretty pink palace was the residence of the Archbishops and Electors of Trier from the 16th century until the late 18th century. You aren’t allowed inside as the palace is currently used for governmental purposes, but the exterior and garden outside are worth a visit on their own merit.

From here, turn 180 degrees and it’s a few minutes to the Kaiserthermen (Imperial baths). Inside, navigate a complex of underground passages and make your way to the tower top offering impressive views of the ruins. Due to stairs, and narrow passageways, it can be difficult to navigate with a wheelchair, but you can still soak in the stunning ancient Roman architecture from afar.

Wander through the gorgeous town of Cochem

Another beautiful town worth a spot in your itinerary is Cochem, located between a hill and the Moselle River. Home to just a little over 5,000 residents, this picturesque old town features half-timbered houses and medieval walls.

Sitting high on the rugged cliff watching over the village is Cochem Castle (also known as Reichsburg Cochem, or the Imperial Cochem Castle), one of the largest castles in the Mosel. If you plan on visiting, do note you can only tour the castle and its courtyards with a guided tour. A taxi is recommended to head to the castle for those with limited mobility and the castle is barrier-free up to the entrance, but there are staircases within the castle.

Back in the town, there’s plenty to do, from cruises and walking tours, plus plenty of cafes, restaurants annd shops. The town features cobblestones and some slightly uphill and downhill slopes, which can be manageable for wheelchair users with a little help.

Sip wine at Traben-Trarbach

The wine town of Traben-Trarbach is called the jewel of the Central Mosel. It is home to charming Art Nouveau buildings, which sit alongside a five-kilometre-long river promenade with beautiful views.

Back in 1900, Traben-Trarbach was a frantic hub of viticulture and commerce, home to the second largest wine trading centre in Europe after the French city of Bordeaux. Demand for Riesling wine was great, and in the second half of the 19th century the capacity of the wine cellars increased, with some being built underneath large areas of the town centre. You can book a guided tour to experience these historic wine cellars, which will help you appreciate your next glass of Riesling wine – one of the three most popular white wines in the world.

You can’t leave without tasting a glass, or in the case of the Wine Discovery Tour at Weingut Emil Franz, six. The family-owned winery was founded over a hundred years ago and is guided by the mantra, ‘from the vineyard to the glass’. This interactive session will reveal the craftmanship and passion behind every bottle, but will deepen your appreciation for wine. As you listen to the tales from the lovely couple, you can enjoy light bites.

The Traben-Trarbach Underworld tour has its accessibility certified according to the criteria of the nationwide label Tourism For All weingut-emil-franz.de

Stroll around the Jungferweiher circular trail

On the edge of Ulmen’s village, an accessible circular trail will take you around a maar lake formed from a volcano eruption several thousand years ago. The threekilometre trail runs around the Jungferweiher pond and its nature reserves. As you make your way along the trail, audiovisual content (including ASL videos) can be discovered by scanning QR codes, and the info boards include braille, too. With the help of a guide, the visually impaired can also enjoy an immersive experience and be one with nature.

On the south bank, a centuries-old tunnel connects the Jungferweiher to the Ullmener Maar. The 125-metre tunnel is wheelchair accessible, although narrow at one point (70cm wide). It allows visitors to experience millennia of earth history up close. After soaking in the gorgeous green forest surrounding Ullmener Maar, make your way to the charming town of Ulmen where you can relax with a bite or a drink, or visit St Matthias Church.

Be one with nature at Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park

This national park, roughly 10,000 hectares in size, was created by the German Federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. The park’s motto is ‘let nature be nature’ and the park puts a lot of energy into ensuring developments take place undisturbed by human influences under their own rules and laws. The rangers at the park believe that the park should not only be visited, but experienced and understood with all the senses.

The National Park is home to around 250 million trees spanning 35 species, other plants, mammals, reptiles, birds and insects including different species of butterflies. It’s a hiker’s haven with numerous trails offered, but to ensure the park can be enjoyed by all – including those with limited mobility – there are marked and certified accessible trails (around 1.6km).

In the park, you can fuel up at Cafe Bistro, which is also home to a number of immersive multimedia experiences on the 1st floor of the building, access to which is barrier free. hunsruecktouristik.de

Endless views from the Erbeskopf summit

While you’re in the area, make sure you save time to visit the Windklang viewing platform where you can get some stunning views from the Erbeskopf summitthe highest mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is located in the middle of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. Created by sculptor C. Mancke, the viewing platform of the structure is accessible from the parking lot where wheelchair users have a direct and easy path after which they can enjoy an unobstructed view of the landscape. Assistant dogs are also welcome.

WHERE TO STAY

As a home base for your exploration of the Rhineland-Palatinate, consider the Kucher’s Landhotel in Darscheid. The quaint four-star hotel is just what you need after a day out offering peaceful rooms accessible for wheelchairs. You can relax in your room, or spend a moment soaking in the silence in the garden on the property, or you can go for a stroll around the hotel before the sun sets. Prices start from Dhs350 per night stay in October.

And you would have never guessed it, but nestled in the quiet Darscheid district, foodies can pull up a chair and enjoy a meal at the One Star Michelin fine dining restaurant, Kucher’s Gourmet on the hotel’s ground floor. Diners will get to enjoy one of two set menus, and the dishes steer clear of unwanted frills, with the young chef only focusing on bringing together fresh produce and delicate flavours. You can pair it with a wine glass or two from the restaurant’s extensive 1,700 labels. kucherslandhotel.de
