SFAIRMONT CHRISTMAS HAVE YOURSELF A FESTIVE
The gifts are stacking up at Fairmont The Palm this festive season
hhh. Come a little closer. Now listen. Hear that? It’s the faint jingle of sleigh bells. Or is it the clip-clop of reindeer hooves? Could it be the satisfying snap of a Christmas cracker? The clink clink of mulled drinks? Maybe it’s the soulful refrain of carol singers warming up their vocal chords. Or perhaps it’s just all of the above, with the avalanche of cheer and Yuletide festivities fast approaching.
Yes, the “most wonderful time of year” is just a few weeks away now, and if you want to experience the best this magical season has to offer, you need to plan ahead. Fortunately, Fairmont The Palm has giftwrapped a whole host of festive family fun so you and your loved ones can make special memories and bask in the glow of goodwill and great food. LIKE MOST PEOPLE, I FIND CHANGE DAUNTING
EDITOR’S PICKS
As humans, we’re programmed to cling to our comfort zone, hardwired to fear the unknown. Be it moving countries, changing jobs, pursuing a passion project… so many of us would rather stay unhappy than face uncertainty.
My husband, eternally a ‘rather oops than what if’ kind of person, is a great embracer of change. He thrives on taking risks. I, far more cautious and pragmatic, am much more change averse. But I’ve found that when I’ve stepped out of my rhythmic patterns is when I’ve done my best work.
I’m much more intentional about chance since I’ve lived in Dubai. As expats in the United Arab Emirates, you only have to look at the profound change that this country has undergone to see just what is possible. And as we gear up to celebrate Union Day 2024, marking 53 years since the UAE was formed on December 2, we dedicate this month’s issue to the beauty, history and ambition of the UAE. From p17, we invite you to discover the best of the seven emirates and all that they have to offer, with guides on where to eat, stay, learn and play.
And as we’re all about change, this month will feature not just one, but seven collectable covers, created using AI art. These covers are visual odes to the vibrant DNA that makes up each emirate, their natural landscapes and defining features brought to life using artificial intelligence. It is the perfect example of just how powerful embracing change can be.
Enjoy the issue,

Getting
my glam on
for events season with… Huda Beauty
Events season in Dubai is in full swing, and that means going from desk to dinner. Which also means, my handbag real estate is required to be efficient. A bronzer and blusher in one? Yes please. A dual-purpose brow pencil and shaper? Perfect. And now, thanks to the new Icy Nude drop from Huda Beauty, one eyeshadow palette equals a week’s worth of looks. I’ve adored collecting up the big eyeshadow palettes from Huda Beauty, and as this is going to be the last, I’m thrilled to have got my hands on it. @hudabeauty

Seeing the new Van Gogh masterpieces at… Louvre Abu Dhabi
You might think that after visiting two van Gogh museums in Amsterdam, going on immersive experiences in Dubai, and reading multiple books on the artist, I would be bored by now. But no. Not even close. So when it was announced a Van Gogh was coming to the capital, I got excited. The Dutch artist painted three versions of The Bedroom, one of which is now in Louvre Abu Dhabi, so I got to say hello to a second one.

Chasing away the midday blues with... Marsh’n’mallow
My trips downstairs to the office lobby usually happens for two reasons – to get water or in search of a sweet treat. I came across a new kiosk in Media One that’s opened, Marsh’n’mallow Galactic Puffsbasically upgraded marshmallows with different flavours and rocky road options. Of course I had to get myself a mixed bag. Sugar consumed, joy obtained and I’m ready for the rest of the day. @marshnmallowuniverse – Manaal Fatimah, Junior Reporter
Gaslighting
my son into
thinking he loves bath time with… Lush
To be clear, my son doesn’t dislike bath time. He just has the attention span of an over-caffeinated magpie. Getting him into the bath isn’t a problem, it’s getting him to stay in there long enough for it to have any dirt-purgative effect. Lush Bath Bombs have proved to be the only nonmedicated method so far with a 100 per cent success rate. Thanks to their latest Minecraft-themed collection, he starts asking for a bath at 6.57am and continues until and even after he has his evening bath. Netherite thought I’d see the day.

Through MY EYES
THE UAE ACCORDING TO...
Drew Moreland
Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Drew Moreland (@drewmorelanddj) voted Best DJ at the What’s On Nightlife Awards 2024. Here he shares some of his favourite spots that you need on your radar.
‘Gate 2’ at Iris is purely dedicated to underground house music. The space is purpose built for the underground intimate vibe, with a custom soundsystem and very little else. It’s no frills, no nonsense, and is purely about the music. The standout feature is that there’s no filming inside the venue, your phone will be stickered on entry covering your front and back camera, it forces you to be in the moment.
@gatetwobyiris
One place that nobody seems to know about, which has some of the best food I’ve ever experienced is Ronin at FIVE LUXE. This place deserves more notoriety.
@ronin_dubai
My job is very hectic and social, so I love tranquil places when I’m off-duty. The best pool we’ve found that fits that – and is family-friendly – is Sofitel Dubai The Palm. It’s huge and has so many options in one place: multiple pools, gorgeous beach views, and lots of places to eat. I can chill at one of the relaxed scenic pools, whilst my son also has the option of water slides, beach, ice cream and more.
@sofiteldubaipalm
One of my favourite Dubai restaurants is Pai Thai. You take a beautiful abra ride to the restaurant, you dine by the waterfront – and enjoy some of the best Thai food in Dubai. I love to take all my visitors here. Be sure to try the beef massaman.
@paithaidubai
Everybody that comes to Dubai should do a desert safari. You can experience dune bashing, sandboarding, camel rides, falconry, traditional dance and a desert BBQ. Then end the day with scenic sunset photo stops.
I recently discovered Hawkerboi in JLT. It’s such a cool spot serving the best Asian street food, hawker-style. It’s got a casual setting, with a super cool vibe, from the decor and lighting, to the view into the kitchen. A great experience, especially when you want something easy going, that’s not going to break the bank.
@hawker.boi
It was a big year for Rugby Sevens in 1995. The event, celebrating its 25th anniversary that year, was to be played on grass for the first time. As I noted in my editor’s letter, although it would perhaps alter the style of play, ‘the carnival atmosphere will remain the same – you really don’t have to be a sports fan to make a great weekend of it.’
Even 30 years ago, Rugby Sevens, now known as the Emirates Dubai 7s, was a weekend the entire country looked forward to, regardless of whether you were into rugby or not. Because from the very beginning, the tournament – the longest running sports event in the Middle East – has been about so much more than just rugby. When it began in 1970, a year before the formation of the United Arab Emirates, it was attended by only a handful of local teams and a scattering of spectators. But by 1995, the competition had grown into a Gulf-wide fixture, and was regarded as the second biggest event of its kind in the world. The year after, in 1996, it would host a qualifying round of the World Cup Sevens. And as the event grew on-pitch, the off-pitch spectacle surrounding the weekend also flourished, and by 2008, the Emirates Dubai 7s moved to its current home, The Sevens Stadium, where it had capacity for a crowd of over 50,000.
Fans come from across the globe naturally, for the sport, and this year will see participation from 128 countries across five disciplines, including rugby, netball and padel. But also, the
fantastic live music across multiple stages, which comes complete with a headline set from Stormzy in 2024. And of course, all of the fantastic festival comradery, fancy dress, foodie pop-ups and family-friendly fun that makes this one of the best weekends on the UAE’s social calendar. All of which makes us so very proud to have been and still remain the official media partner of the Emirates Dubai 7s. Find our complete guide to this year’s event on p31.

The Al Ain Palace is one of the best reinstated palaces in Abu Dhabi, and was the home of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE and the frst President of the UAE. He lived here with his family until the late sixties, before he moved to Abu Dhabi. The palace and private residence provide insights into the lives and culture of both the ruling family and the community until the country’s transformation after the discovery of petroleum. WORDS: MILES BUCKERIDGE
The most fascinating aspect of Dubai is its hall of mirrors quality. It has a unique gift of being able to reflect or represent an almost incalculable number of different things to different people. To some, it’s a record-breaking citadel of cloud-interrupting towers; to others it’s a land of five-star holidays and unending sun; at times it wears the hat of custodian, proudly curating and celebrating regional customs and history; it’s an epicentre of elite gastronomy, showing off multi-Michelin Starred dinners alongside globally diverse street food; it’s a place of calibrated vision, refusal to accept the impossible, a beacon of (and to) the pioneering spirit, an engineering marvel, an innovative, culturally chimeric metropolis that has no interest in slowing down. So I’m pitching this guide as if it’s an itinerary for someone in the farcically implausible situation of not knowing what Duabi is. Max impact in minimum time.

Bab Al Shams
There’s a timeless romance to a luxury desert stay. A sense of being grounded in the etherial that comes from wandering beneath an unobscured majlis of stars, seeing the horizon-deep undulation of amber dunes, absorbing Bedouin-inspired glamour and savouring the silent seclusion of a real oasis. Three of the five come with their own plunge pool – serving as a delightful spot to start the day with a floating breakfast, and all boast an African inspired aesthetic that offers a tropical, instant on-holiday feel. Dreamland Aqua Park
It might not be as big or thrill-heavy as Aquaventure or Yas Waterworld, but the locally treasured Dreamland is a beloved Umm Al Quwain institution. It’s home to more than 25 attractions including aquatic-themed rides, plunge pools, a crazy river, a giant wave pool and a kamikaze ride. Tickets are Dhs160 for adults and Dhs100 for children. @dreamlandaquaparkuae
The Mangrove Beach
Anyone who thinks the UAE is lacking natural beauty will quickly have their opinion changed at Umm Al Quwain’s mangrove beach. Gazing out to the calm waters of Al Yafra Creek, this remote stretch of sand has dedicated areas for
camping BBQs and day guests, so the area remains largely unspoiled. As such, the wildlife watching is excellent: so count pink flamingos and herons as your daycation mates. Your best bet is to bring your own food (and be sure to take the rubbish away) but there is also a restaurant and café nearby, where you can also hire kayaks to enjoy the mangroves from the water.
UAQ National Museum
Despite being the second smallest emirate, Umm Al Quwain has a lot of history and culture to offer. Its National Museum showcases its treasured heritage, which dates back to 1768. This fortlike complex is located in the Old Souq area, with a turret standing tall, matching the traditional look and feel of the surrounding buildings. Entry is Dhs4.
Eat Here
Travelling all the way to Umm Al Quwain for German food may sound excessive, but if you’re already here and you have a strong craving for schnitzel, bratwurst or sauerkraut, then make your way down to the Little Bavaria Restaurant. Alongside your Bavarian feast, expect unique German beers and serene of the beach from their terrace.

History lovers can visit Fujairah Fort, a testament to the emirate’s rich past. This
17th-century fort, perched on a hilltop, offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and is a great place to delve into the emirate’s Emirati heritage. The fort is known for its significant role in resisting invasion and bombardment by the British Royal Navy. Nature lovers should also make time to visit the UAE Flower Farm, nestled in the foothills of the Hajar Mountains. Known for its beautiful exotic flowers like anthuriums, orchids, and heliconias, the farm offers guided tours year-round, with the best time to visit being November to March. Stroll through the fragrant gardens, learn about the farm’s operations, and pick up some local flowers to take home.
Turtle Beach Bar
Located within Royal Beach Hotel, Turtle Beach Bar has an amazing view of Dibba Rock and a chilled, holiday beach shack vibe. The beautiful spot overlooks the sparkling Indian Ocean with direct access to the beach and serves lunch and dinner from 11am every day. On the menu? You can enjoy cocktails, mocktails, fish and chips, speciality coffee, burgers, and more while taking in the scenes and sea breeze. You can even take your four-legged friends. @turtle_ beach_restaurant_bar
Dibba Bay
For a fresh, farm-to-table experience Dibba Bay’s rustic shop in Fujairah serves fresh oysters straight from the farm, just a stone’s throw away. It is the first farm in the Middle East to grow gourmet oysters and has become the primary supplier of fresh, juicy oysters to the UAE’s best restaurants. For Dhs127, you can get a dozen juicy shucked oysters served with lemon and vinaigrette, perfect after a day of exploring. @dibbabay
Hidden gems
The quaint village of Masafi is around 30 minutes away from Fujairah and the scenic drive makes it well worth the trip. There’s one on-site restaurant, Shore House, a nautical themed all-day diner, but it serves a wealth of tasty international dishes. @ritzcarltonalhamrabeach

Masfout Fort and Museum
A way away from the beaches of Ajman is Masfout. Originally well positioned to be able to spot bandits preparing attacks – the Masfout fort is now more of a historical
viewing deck, where you can enjoy the view of farmlands and Hajar mountains. The Masfout Museum (Dhs5) is a treasure trove of Emirati history. Full of old photos, archaeological finds, and traditional tools – evidence of life dates back to 5,000 BCE in Masfout, with pre-historic graves, stone circles and more have been found dating to the Umm al Nar Bronze Age. As the area continued to develop into the 1940s, there was a shortage of food and the land was frequently attacked and so the people of Masfout appealed to the ruler of Ajman, thus making the area territory of the emirate.

Experience the ultimate party at the Emirates Dubai 7s, with more thrilling sports action than ever – and a global superstar headliner set to light up the field
WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN
It’s that time of year again when the Emirates Dubai 7s storms into Dubai. This year’s tournament, running just before the UAE National Day holiday from November 29 to December 2,
promises to be the biggest social and sporting event of the year – and one of the most thrilling 7s ever. And speaking of storms, brace yourself for the most electrifying headliner the 7s has ever seen…
STORMZY AT THE 7S
Grime trailblazer. Glastonbury headliner. Political figurehead. Cambridge Scholarship Donor. Nice guy
He may only be 31, but the allconquering Stormzy is arguably Britain’s finest musician, carving his name into the annals of British hiphop history with countless awards under his belt, as well as three Number 1 albums. He knows how to write a hit (Vossi Bop, Hide & Seek, Big for your Boots, Shut Up). He’s socially-conscious. Politically vocal. Has an admirable respect for learning. And, boy, does he know his way around a soundbite. Embrace the humble nature of Stormzy…
On doing good
“I used to be really uncomfortable with that at the beginning of my career. You know, when you do something half positive. People are like, ‘Woah, you are Mother Teresa.’ And it’s like, yo, chill man.”
On growing up
“I’m a public-facing human. I’ve gone through all these motions of becoming a man in front of the world”.
On meeting Stormzy scholarship recipients
“At first, maybe I wouldn’t have wanted to meet anyone; it’s not about me. Plus, they’re smarter than me! What the **** am I gonna tell them? But then I was like, away from the scholarship, I wanted them to know I got them, and you got me. It’s spiritual.”
On education
“As much as people think rappers, footballers, and celebrities are glorified, trust me – learning, education, and reading is a much more powerful and beneficial thing”.
On Adele
“As anyone knows, from before I even knew her, I was a fan. I think everyone just knows that the woman they see is as remarkable in real life as when the cameras are rolling. [We have] real normal conversations. Nothing headlinegrabbing, I love her …”
On relationships
“The beauty of a relationship, you lean on each other, you rely on each other, you take energy and give energy to each other.”
On the spotlight
I just want to be an artist. I want to live. I want to see what I like, what I love, what I don’t like, what I want to do. I’ll just make art, I’ll come home, I’ll walk my dog. I think the spotlight makes me a bit… hmm, is it nervous? Does the spotlight make me nervous? The spotlight… sometimes it scares the **** out of me.”
Stormzy headlines the Emirates Dubai 7s festival weekend on Sunday December 1, performing on the Frequency on 8 Stage following the HSBC SVNS on Pitch 1. Fans who initially purchased Saturday tickets but are eager to not miss Stormzy’s performance on Sunday, can receive upgrades to weekend passes through the Emirates Dubai 7s app. emiratesdubai7s.com
SUGABABES AT THE 7S
favourites
The bubblegum pop group has shapeshifted into several member configurations since bursting onto the scene in 2008. But the original band are back together. Older, wiser, and selling out stages across the globe. With their sing-along repertoire featuring six number one singles, including Push the Button, Round Round and Too Lost In You, Sugababes might be an unlikely headliner for the Rugby Rocks stage, but they’re sure to be a popular one. So let’s revisit the OG line-up…
Keisha Buchanan
It was only by chance that Keisha Buchanan joined the Sugababes. As a teen, she came along to a studio session her friend Mutya Buena was doing with Siobhan Donaghy (both of whom were signed to the same talent agency) where All Saints manager Ron Tom recognised the opportunity in front of him and created a trio. Buchanan became the longest-serving Sugababe, sticking with the band through 11 years of hits, before ultimately leaving in 2009. Her remarkable vocals were a key contribution to Sugababes becoming one of British pop music’s most beloved girlbands.
Mutya Buena
Mutya Buena’s raspy vocals helped Sugababes stand out from the crowd in the early noughties as female pop groups dominated the charts and saw the group score number one singles with Freak Like Me, Round Round and Hole in the Head She departed the group in 2005 after bravely opening up about her postnatal depression and desire to spend more time with her young daughter. But that wasn’t the end of Buena’s musical career. She went on to have solo success with hits including Real Girl and Song 4 Mutya before making her way back to the original Sugababes line-up in 2012.
Siobhan Donaghy
Despite being one of the founding members of Sugbabes, Siobhan Donaghy left the band before it reached much commercial success, departing after the release of their first album to lukewarm response in 2001. Thereafter, she embarked on a solo career, releasing two solo albums in 2003 and 2007. But the industry took its toll, and in 2009, she said in an interview that “Ultimately, the true nature of the business side of the music industry is enough to keep me away.” But the possibility of the original Sugababes reforming brought her back, with the group reforming in the summer of 2012.
Sugababes headlines the Emirates Dubai 7s festival weekend on Saturday November 30, performing on the Rugby Rocks Stage. Fans who initially purchased Sunday tickets but are eager to catch both performances can receive upgrades to weekend passes through the Emirates Dubai 7s app. emiratesdubai7s.com
Noughties icons. Soulful singers. Unconventional idols. Festival
Here’s why we love the Emirates Dubai 7s

Want to kickstart the weekend with a day full of rugby action and entertainment? On Friday, November 29, ticket holders with weekend passes get free entry. Watch local and invitational teams go head-to-head and dive into the excitement early.
The rugby tournament is epic
While the entertainment may steal some attention, let’s not forget the heart of it all – the rugby. Dubai hosts the first leg of the HSBC SVNS 2025, featuring fierce competition from top teams. On the women’s side, defending champs Australia, along with New Zealand, France, USA, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Great Britain, Japan, Brazil, Spain, and China, will take the field. For the men, defending champs South Africa face off against Argentina, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, France, Fiji, Great Britain, USA, Spain, Uruguay, and Kenya.
But that’s not all – local and touring clubs will compete in the Invitational Tournament, plus the crowd-favourite Invitational Netball Tournament returns. And don’t miss the Cricket 7s, the functional fitness competition WODON3, and padel matches adding to the weekend’s excitement.
The all-new VIP experience is Golden

Dressing up for the Emirates Dubai 7s is practically a rite of passage. This year’s theme, “Festival,” encourages you to channel your inner Coachella vibes. From Elton John’s iconic glasses to vibrant, glitter-filled looks, unleash your creativity and show off your boldest festival attire.

Take a deep dive into Bluewaters, a destination that has seen a renaissance of sorts recently. The visitor count may have slowed with the temporary closure of Ain Dubai, but with a new slew of flagship leisure venues making a home (and quite the noise) there, it feels like Bluewaters is back, baby. Here are eight spots, old and new, that are worth getting back into Bluewaters for.
TO (THE NEW) THE ULTIMATE
VNYL
Drink this: Just Like Heaven (Dhs70)
New kid on the block, VNYL Dubai bills itself as a Hi-Fi bar and has a swanky space plastered with all things music. Use the record players to curate your own personal high-fidelity, analogue listening party. Young design elements that give it that afterhours vibe. It’s where you’d come for a no-frills night out and when you’re done with dinner and drinks downstairs, you can head on upstairs for the after party, which comes alive post midnight. @vnyl.dxb
Din Tai Fung
Eat this: Chicken Xiao Long Bao (Dhs39)
Only one way to describe this spot - comfort food. Din Tai Fung’s notoriety for wholesome, hearty Chinese fare is not without reason, and this licensed outpost on the Bluewaters is no different. Every dish is a winner, with flavours and textures you’re sure to be familiar with, albeit in the fancy packaging of a slightly more upscale venue and inventive cocktails to pair. It’s not new, but it never gets old. @dintaifungbw
Alici
Eat this: Fritto Misto (Dhs95)
This is the only authentic Italian you’ll need. The iconic spot has been serving up the freshest, most flavourful and authentically Amalfi Coast-inspired seafood for a while now, and is one of the must-visit venues on the island. You can find an experience for every time of the day, light and airy in the afternoon and vibrant and welcoming in the evening, and the sublime coastal food will feed your appetite and your heart. Bonus points for the stunning coastal charm decor and views.
@alicidubai
The Spaniel
Eat this: Beef Wellington (Dhs450)
A quintessential British brasserie, The Spaniel is another new opening on the island, and brings a new flavour to the mix. Think the finest English sensibilities of lords and ladies and country clubs, translated into dark wood decor, cosy and nostalgic, and reflecting classic British architecture with iconic sporting moments. The menu honours the rich culinary traditions of a bygone era, with age-old recipes and craft cocktails that will evoke the spirit of Albion. English charm, done right. @thespanieldxb

BLUEWATERS
Everything’s that new, old and solid leisure gold on Bluewaters…
Clay
Eat this: Black Cod Quinoa (Dhs215)
Clay is one of the more popular spots to visit if you’ve got a fierced craving for quality Nikkei cuisine. Fusing Japanese and Peruvian influences with finesse, Clay is that fine dining venue you’d go to for a proper, weekend night out. Big, beautiful decor, low lighting and live entertainment complete the package, and you have yourself a Dubai dining experience. There’s also a fantastic party brunch on Saturdays, if that’s your thing.
@clay_dubai
Brass Monkey
Drink this: Cherry Pop Cocktail (Dhs55)
Dining, but fun. Brass Monkey isn’t strictly a restaurant - it’s an entertainment destination, combining bowling, arcade games, drinks and food to create the ultimate night out. You’ll find all the ingredients to your weekend plan recipe here. If you’ve got a big group to feed and entertain, this is the spot for you. Be a big kid, take each other on, chow down on game food, bites and nibbles, and sip on fun cocktails.
@brassmonkeysocial
Rose Bar
Drink this: Miami Vice(s) (Dhs70)
Straight from Miami’s neon nightlife scene, the uber chic and charming Rose Bar has opened doors in the brand new Delano on Bluewaters. Here, host and toast nights to a new era of nightlife, helmed by the famous Floridian, all-encompassing rose-tinted glow. Get ready to welcome a menu of iconic cocktails, unpretentious glamour and glittering character, with nooks and enclaves of low-key luxury, and a true story of Americana.
@rosebardubai
Jazz Lounge
Drink this: Yeomji (Dhs80)
From The Pods comes Jazz Lounge, a new intimate musical experience. The spot is sure to bring all the jazz fans to the door, but even if you’re not one of them, the sophisticated stylings and crafted cocktails make for the perfect after-dinner spot. As you enter you’ll be greeted by a dimly lit, sultry space with a cosy stage. Enjoy the cool vibes, tuck into some nibbles and finish the night with a flurry of *jazz hands*.

EAT // BREAKFAST REVIEW
Words: Alice Holtham-Pargin
BREAKFAST REVIEW:
SCALINI CUCINA
This laid-back evolution brings all the brand’s best bits to a more casual setting
Dubai Mall is eerily quiet. Its doors have only just opened on Sunday morning, and as I glide by Dubai Ice Rink and past the cascading Dubai Mall Waterfall, there’s a feeling of being here during the calm before the storm. That sense of serenity continues as I approach the instantly recognisable sapphire blue façade of Scalini Cucina, the brand’s signature swirling script gold font emblazoned above the door. This is the new iteration of Scalini, the London-born Italian restaurant known and loved across the Middle East, presented as a more relaxed, but equally refined, experience.
Scalini isn’t the first brand in Dubai to expand from fine dining to casual cuisine. Similarly haute and highly regarded Italian restaurant Cipriani has had huge success in Dubai with its Cipriani Dolci concept,
so much so that this chic café even counts Dubai royals among its diners. But can Scalini Cucina emulate the same success? We’re struck by how well the interiors have translated into Scalini Cucina. Black and white portraits of famous faces that have previously frequented Scalini hang on the walls, the staff are dressed in the same powder blue, and even the lemon tree has made its way to Dubai Mall. It’s all beautifully done with immaculate attention to detail.
Before we get to the food menu, we’re drawn to the array of specialty coffees, and a cremoso (Dhs35) arrives looking not dissimilar to an espresso martini. Each sip is sweet and velvety, a cold coffee infused with smooth vanilla and topped with a swirl of whipped cream and a dusting of chocolate. It arrives alongside our breakfast choices, a Scalini Breakfast (Dhs75) and the truffle scrambled eggs (Dhs65). The Scalini breakfast invites you to enjoy three eggs cooked to order (we choose three perfectly
poached eggs with just the right amount of runny centre), with thin slices of fresh avocado, juicy chunks of buffalo Mozzarella and quarters of deliciously ripe tomato. We heap various combinations onto the sourdough bread, the over-toasting masked by the fresh flavours of the high-quality ingredients. The truffle scrambled egg is similarly delicious, buttery and wellbalanced, it’s a simple high-impact dish where great ingredients sing. Although we don’t need it, we share a croissant for dessert (because calories don’t count on Sunday), which is crispy and crunchy on the outside, then packed with swirls of lemon meringue inside. It’s rich and creamy, and we only wish there had been more filling to pack inside the croissant.
We blink and two hours have gone by, and we’d hardly noticed that as we enjoyed our leisurely breakfast, almost all of the other tables have been filled, mall-goers taking a break from retail therapy to tuck in to Scalini’s fine Italian delights.
Scalini Cucina, Dubai Mall, First Floor, opposite Dubai Mall Waterfall, daily 10am to 11.30pm. Tel: (0)4 554 9885. @scalinicucina
WHAT’S ON VERDICT
The renowned Italian restaurant’s sister café is chic and refined, but doesn’t compromise on quality.
DAY PASS
Enjoy the sun and sand at WET Deck , WET and the Beach daily.
Italian food famously prizes simplicity over fussiness. It’s a culinary vein that has organically chosen to focus on the primacy of individual ingredients, to respect and honour regional traditions, and represent the edible embodiment of the phrase, quality over quantity.
That’s pretty much the ethos that drives everything at Isabella Cucina Italiana, a new basilica of European cuisine at Vida Emirates Hills. It comes from the same team and let-the-produce-do-the-talking philosophy as steakhouse, Hunter and Barrel.
THE LOOK
That’s not to say either venue has suffered any lack of imagination in the curation of their interior aesthetics. Isabella knows very well who she is, proudly flaunting low-lit earthy tones, a functioning glass-fronted pasta-drying cucina, a grand brasseriestyle bar, horseshoe dining booths, dainty frilled lamp shades and soft-edged art deco influences. She has a bellezza natural, and palpable down-to-earth charm.
THE MENU
Currently, the entire menu fits on a double-sided card, and I hope it stays that way. There are none of the
Japanese sharing distractions some other ‘authentic’ European restaurants feel compelled to offer. You will find a crudi collection though, from which the tartare di tonno rosso (Dhs95) is a regal choice –served with an aromatic burst of eggplant caviar, and a umami-tempering anchovybased colatura sauce.
Dubai’s pizza portfolio already has a pretty dense base. There are plenty of examples of the classic Neapolitan, the New York slice, the Roman-style squares, the American chain pies, Detroit bakes and crispy thin-crust pinsa. Isabella has chosen a different take on the bake, their 48-hour proofed pizza tonda – which come fresh out of the statement wood-fired oven – lie somewhere between a Neopolitan and a round Roman affair. I ordered the spicy salami-topped diavola (Dhs95), it’s blistered in the right places, has a satisfying bite to it, and the rustic breadiness nuturingly cradles the deep, steeped tomato above it. Call me a stickler for tradition but when it comes to pizza, my first love is Napoli, and whilst Isabella proposes an attractive alternative, that’s one cheat day I cannot sign off.
The fritto misto (Dhs65) is a playful version of the Italian staple. The plating
style here makes it more amenable to sharing than the old-school tower formation, and the chili jam and citrus mayonnaise is a casual and cunningly conceived accompaniment. From the pasta, I can confidently back the ravioli ricotta e spinaci (Dhs85). It’s a sublime mouthful, fully evocative of balmy afternoon Sicilian piazza dining. A secondi recommendation, the osso bucco – a bargain at Dhs135 – is exactly the sort of reason you should stray from the pasta e risotto section of any good Italian restaurant. A tender veal shank, clad in velveteen stock, abruptly jackknifed by a zesty gremolata.
I’m sure the tiramisu is lovely (I didn’t try it, sue me) but I was deeply impressed by the crostata di mele (apple tart, Dhs50). It’s a rugged, fruity, tarte tatin proxy with renaissance-level elegance of pastry.
I’d heard rumours there’s an as-yetunopened Negroni bar on the upper level, so before leaving I engineer a brief tour. It’s a dramatic departure from the restaurant floor, in a gorgeously rendered way. But that’s a story for another day.

VIVA LA GOA
A new cocktail lounge by the inspiring minds behind Tresind...
Viva La Goa is the new lounge (with a rooftop bar component coming soon) at One&Only Royal Mirage. It’s a concept sired by restaurant group Passion, the same team that unleashed Tresind Studio, Avatara and Carnival on Dubai’s adoring palates.
Viva La Goa might have a series of successful siblings and an ‘old money’ setting, but it feels very much like it’s trying to do things its own way. It has taken the space of an old sports bar, and despite a cosmetic lift – still vibrates with the energy of that laidback aesthetic. But what departures make this ‘Passionproject’ worth a visit? We sent a What’s On delegation to test out its neatly concise menu of Portuguese-Indian fusion tapas, and whether the mocktails can stand tall with the cocktails.
MILES
filled tides of refreshment. You should also explore the Recado Negro (Dhs60), a braised lamb dish with charred habanero salsa and a carby foil of mini brioche buns. If I were looking for case book evidence to support the viability of Indo-Euro fusions, this would be my Exhibit A. It benefits from a sublime spice mix, and the sort of deeply tender, shredding texture that only comes from a lovingly slow cook.
Words: Manaal Fatimah and Miles Buckeridge
One of my top tapas plates is Mr. Nath’s favourite chili chicken (Dhs55, named after the owner’s signature order). I stand with Mr. Nath here – his fiery, salty chicken has everything you might want from a cocktail pairing ‘picky bit’. Counterbalancing its freak is the Porto sangria (Dhs65), providing full fruit-
I enjoyed the Madeiran Negroni (Dhs65), an impressive red port infused analogue of the classic Italian vermouth blend. The bitter edge of Negroni is softened and the subtle background sweetness changes the taste horizon to fit the setting. The drink collection at Viva La Goa is strong, but it could do with some refinement, perhaps a more experimental direction of the sorts seen in some of the brand’s sister restaurants.
MANAAL
I’m likely one of the least popular nondrinkers in this city, simply because I won’t shut up about it. (Palatable) options for my kind are scarce, which is why I feel so strongly about the cause, but let’s just say that Viva La Goa passed my test. Nothing about the venue’s set up is monumental, but it works because it’s so
simple. Here, you find good company, a couple of hours and a vacuum in your time for just this moment on this corner of the balcony. Put your feet up, and you won’t even realise how quickly time goes by.
The question we’re trying to answer with this experiment is whether a nondrinker can enjoy drinks at a bar. The answer in this circumstance is a relieving yes – I sampled a Sangria De Goa (Dhs45), a bright, tropical concoction with loads of fruit and the Lisbon Lemonade (Dhs45), a tangy, icy mix of lemon and blueberries topped with sugar. Both are refreshing, perfect for the ever-looming sticky warmth of the outdoors, and with actual discernable flavours.
My picks from the food menu would be the spinach and corn rissóis with tomato and date jam (Dhs50) – salty and sweet with a seamless fusion of the ingredients –the prawn balchão with poee (Dhs55) –pockets of spicy curry goodness that took me straight back to the streets of India –and the Goan pulao with beef chorizo chili fry (Dhs70) – an elevated version of a fried rice, with grains tossed to a near crisp, umami beef and loads of tang.

A BIG, FAT CREEK WANDERING
Stray off the beaten track with Frying Pan Adventures
Avisit to Dubai’s oldest communities will take you back in time where the heartbeat of the city first began. Here, you can immerse yourself in the bustling souks and views of the iconic Dubai Creek away from the skyscrapers and the glitz and glam you may be accustomed to.
With Frying Pan Adventures and their Dubai Souks and Creekside Food Walk, you will walk away with much more than just your bellies full. Led by a knowledgeable guide, you will take a deep dive into Dubai’s history as you navigate through the narrow alleyways while making pit stops at humble eateries.
The paths chosen stray away from those well-trodden by tourists, but have been carefully curated to ensure you won’t miss a thing worth seeing (or tasting). Allow yourself to take in every sight, enjoy the scents of perfume and spices as they fill the air and hang on to every word of your guide as they tell you tales about Dubai back in the day.
ABOUT YOUR FOOD WALK
The benefit to passing tourists is that they’ll be able to experience the real, authentic flavours of the region. For those who have called Dubai home for as long as they can remember, expect nostalgia, paired with flavours and bites you possibly haven’t tried before.
We can’t give away the names of the cafes or restaurants as that’s something we want you to experience first-hand when you do the tour. What we can share is that your group will
enjoy three delicious snack stops before ending with a main sit-down meal. Think piping hot paratha from a corner café (paired with chai if you want), a refreshing dessert with rose syrup and crushed ice, and traditional Emirati food in a Barjeel (windtower).
And, as we mentioned, this isn’t just any foodie tour, so you can even expect a playful competitive game and walk home with a little gift.
Along the way, listen to your guide tell you tales of Dubai including what the previous currency of the city was, the dredging of the Creek, the religious tolerance of the city and the lifestyle of those living in the neighbourhood – from both past and present.
One highlight of your trip, and what nobody visiting Dubai should miss is an abra ride across The Creek from one old neighbourhood to the other.
A non-refundable ticket is Dhs435, but if you’re unsure of plans, opt for the flex ticket for Dhs478 per person where you can reschedule or even get a refund on your ticket (minus a Dhs35 cancellation fee). If you have a group of loved ones who want to do the tour, opt for a private group session for a starting price of Dhs3,056 (six guests or less).
HELPFUL TIPS
•Arrive on time.
•Carry your earphones (3.5mm) for the audio system.
Solo travellers are welcome. Expect plenty of chatter and laughs with others on the tour, and you may even learn a thing or two about the culture of a fellow member. Speaking of which, the group is capped at 14 to ensure a small intimate group.
•If you have any allergies or intolerances, notify the team when booking.
•Dress comfy, wear walking shoes, and carry only the essentials.
•Stay hydrated, but bear in mind, washroom pit stops are limited.
Do note, if you plan to do the food walk over the summer, the route is adapted to ensure guests are comfortable. A tote bag with a map of Old Dubai, sanitiser and water is provided by the guide.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Raghad Murad
…and her fun size trail blaze of self-expression
Words: Manaal Fatimah
Raghad Murad was a bright-eyed university student when the idea to start a sticker business came to her. The year was 2020, the peak of the pandemic’s most prohibitive protocols, and the need of the hour for Raghad - Arabic stickers that stood out. She had set off to source some for herself, and surprisingly couldn’t find any.
“I would find Arabic ones but they were expensive or the designs would be super cliché,” Raghad tell us. “So, that was the starting point, and because stickers are also the easiest form of artwork - it’s very simple.”
And just like that Waggish was born, brought to life by her and three of her friends. Now, it’s been four years and the trajectory of growth for this little homegrown business built on pure passion, the technicolour fuel of pop culture and the fortifying powers of girlhood is a sweet victory pill.
I first met Raghad in January of 2023 and since then, the other team members have departed (but not in spirit) on their individual paths to find their own thing. This is Raghad’s thing and she is determined to unlock the full potential of the cocktail that is her craft and her commerce.
But what exactly does that level up look like?
“The first two years were just really like building a library of designs and then we would produce them on everything - so, shirts and totes and mugs,” explains Raghad. “Now I’ve decided to take Waggish to its full potential by not just doing the stickers but do more original products, more collaborations with other brands.”
The bright colours, bold lines, slogans and messages all come from Raghad’s mind, one artistically inclined towards the infinite universe of digital design. She draws these original prints by hand, featuring Arabic and some English quips, quotes and catchphrases with all the wit of the modern Internet citizen. It’s just an uber fun way to celebrate life or make a social statement and what is one to do but gravitate?
In this current state of transformation, the brand is no longer a simple store for stickers it’s a full-bodied creative brand with a unique illustration style that uses the flavour of our day-to-day lives to create products with flair, finesse and personality by the boatload.
“When Subway reached out, I was in complete shock,” recalls Raghad, when asked of her favourite collaborations so far. “Now it’s an international brand that is collaborating with Waggish – that one was the biggest one when it came. After that, it was Rimmel London. TikTok Business was really big too and Shahid from MBC.”
In Raghad’s eyes, stickers are an expression of the self, and when you have strong stances on certain topics, they can be used to visually represent that. Which is also why Waggish doesn’t shy away from going down that route.
“Stickers, at their essence, are a visual expression of who you are. The way that you put stickers on your laptop or your iPad, they tell stories about your hobbies, what you stand for, stuff you like.”
“I think because Waggish was born in the UAE, has all those Middle Eastern people following it and it’s like an Arab brand, we need to have a voice to share and promote that. It’s not like a political approach, but more like an awareness approach, more of like lets open this conversation – it doesn’t have to be scary to talk about those things. “
The ultimate goal for Waggish is to set up a physical shop, a destination that doesn’t seem very far off from this vantage point. Whenever it does, you’ll find me there, stocking up on my own fun size bits of self-expression.

Now in its fifth year, the Dubai Ride offers serveral traditional cycling routes that take you past some of the city’s most iconic buildings. Training hard? Here’s how to bounce back faster
Whether you’re working out to get ripped, improve your fitness or compete in your very first long-distance run, recovery is where the magic really happens. During recovery, your body adapts to the training stress, muscles repair and you build the strength to cope with whatever your trainer throws at you next. So, it pays to recover as hard as you work out. Sure, eating well and prioritising a good night’ sleep is a simple ticket to faster recovery. But if you want the extra edge, there’s a whole range of high-tech recovery sessions available in Dubai that can help…
Foam roller machines
Where: Forma project
Fitness enthusiasts searching for a quick and effective recovery option are making their way to Forma Studio in Golden Mile on the Palm. Specialising in muscle tension relief, workout recovery, and body contouring, Forma offers a unique twist on foam rolling with their machine-based lymphatic drainage massages. These 45-minute sessions target specific muscle groups, using rotating wooden bars to apply pressure, loosen fascia, and ease tightness. Starting from your feet and working upwards, guests move through a sequence of positions that not only reduce soreness and swelling but also help sculpt the body and reduce cellulite. The added touch of infrared heat enhances the experience, making it a must-try for anyone serious about their recovery. Golden Mile Galleria Building 7, Palm Jumeirah, discovery session from Dhs60. Tension release massage
Where: Contrast Wellness
Already renowned for its signature ice baths and infrared saunas, Contrast Wellness has become a trusted name in physical restoration and recovery. Now, the Dubai-based studio has expanded its wellness offerings with the introduction of 60-minute restorative massages at its City Walk branch. For fitness enthusiasts seeking muscle recovery, the Targeted Release treatment is a standout. Unlike a typical deep tissue massage, this therapy focuses on trigger points within the fascial tissue, helping to relieve tension, reduce muscle soreness, and improve range of motion – making it a perfect post-workout option. In addition to their massage services, Contrast Wellness also offers 30-minute assisted stretching sessions (Dhs175), providing a well-rounded approach to recovery.

Assisted stretching
Where: Stretch Pro
While warming up and cooling down are essential parts of any workout, for many fitness fanatics, stretching has evolved into a dedicated activity of its own. At Stretch Pro in Times Square Center, one-on-one assisted stretching sessions are drawing in tight and achy people, offering a way to recover from intense workouts. Unlike solo stretching, assisted stretching allows your body to fully relax as a ‘flexologist’ guides your muscles through movements you couldn’t achieve on your own. During these sessions, instructors will assist people with back and hamstring tension, while also stretching parts of your body you didn’t even know could be stretched, like the side of your ankle; the inside of your wrist; and a part of your lower back that has always felt sore but couldn’t quite reach. The result? A full-body feeling of looseness and relief that’s both therapeutic and educational – giving you stretching skills to take home for future recovery.
Stretch Pro, Times Square Center, daily 8am to 10pm, Dhs180 (20 minutes), Dhs250 (30 minutes), Dhs300 (40 minutes). Packages available. Tel: (0)50 381 5388. stretchpro.com

Recover hard at SIRO One Za’abeel, Dubai
Ice bath therapy
Where: Endorphins Method
It’s hard to open Instagram without seeing someone dunking themselves in cold water before extolling the physical and mental benefits of the ice bath. So, what’s it all about and why are people so keen to take the cold plunge? Ice baths are a form of cryotherapy that call for you to submerge yourself in chilly water, ideally up to your chest, for 10 to 15 minutes. When you sit in cold water, your blood vessels constrict; when you get out, they open back up. This process helps flush away metabolic waste post-workout. We’re fans of Benoit Demeulemeester, founder of Endorphins Method who hosts and guides people through breathwork and ice bath sessions daily in Dubai, including Kite Beach sessions on Friday morning at 6am and 8am. Various locations in Dubai, from Dhs250. Tel: (0)50 881 8735. @endorphinsmethod

TSURF, SAMBAL, SAFARI: THE BEAUTY OF SOUTH COAST Sri Lanka’s
Whether you want adventure, wellness, beach, or culture, you’ll find it hard not to fall in love with this tropical island…
he Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka, with its diverse landscapes and enchanting culture, invites visitors to embrace a slower pace of life. A four-hour flight from Dubai, this epic destination is a treasure trove of adventure with palm-tree lined beaches, cool surf stays, yoga retreats, and an abundance of wildlife. On the south coast, there’s a shared love for the ocean among locals and visitors alike, where the rhythm of the waves matches the relaxed tempo of life.
Whisk around in a tuk-tuk for some beach-hopping – perhaps a breezy ride to Weligama Beach, one of the world’s best spots to learn to surf. For a change of pace, take a scenic day trip to the picturesque city of Galle, where you can pick up postcard souvenirs from the beloved Stick No Bills, admire the architecture of the historic Fort, and cool off with seaweed tacos at MARU while you people-watch.
Make your way to Smoke and Bitters, one of Asia’s 50 Best Bars, nestled in a coconut grove in
Hiriketiya, to enjoy a sunset cocktail and delicious bites. Over in Matara, The Doctor’s House is a laid-back haven for travelers, surfers, and families to connect over great food and unforgettable parties.
And then, of course, there’s the food. Oh, the food. Some of the best in Sri Lanka can be found on the streets or in the homes of locals. A visit to the familyrun No.1 Dewmini Roti Shop in Mirissa is a must, where you can savour Sri Lankan dishes like seafood roti and kottu in a serene garden setting.
While the high season on the south coast runs from December to May, I fell in love during the low season – fewer crowds, a little more rain, and just as much magic. In other words: there’s a Sri Lanka for everybody, all year round.

Kurulu Bay
Words like ‘sustainable’ and ‘eco-resort’ are often overused in the travel industry but Kurulu Bay, a boutique hotel set on the shores of Sri Lanka’s largest lake, embodies these principles in every sense. The serene retreat boasts a mere 14 luxurious accommodations, from treehouses to two-bedroom cottages with private pools, each built in harmony with the surrounding nature, without a single tree being cut down. The design is contemporary and beguiling with unified indoor-outdoor design and floor-toceiling windows that frame Koggala lake and dense jungle, where crocodiles reside and monkeys swing playfully in the trees above. Spend blissful days drifting away by one of the two pools, gentle swims, morning yoga sessions, and calming massages at the spa, fueled by soul-nourishing homegrown dishes at The Kitchen (we recommend the prawn curry and chargrilled cabbage). For a bit of adventure, guests can take a boat ride across Koggala Lake, exploring its islands, Buddhist temples, and spice gardens. This eco-friendly hideaway is also just inland from famous surf spot, Ahangama Beach, and a tuk-tuk ride away from the historic fort city of Galle. Life at Kurulu Bay is slow, you’ll cherish every second and appreciate the beauty of life.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge
Wild Coast Tented Lodge sits on the edge of Yala National Park, spilling onto the rugged shores of Sri Lanka’s southeast coast. It’s made up of 28 cocoon-like tents with four-poster beds, freestanding copper bathtubs, luxurious amenities, air conditioning, and private pools. Game drives into Yala, led by the lodge’s expert rangers twice daily, reveal the park’s teeming wildlife: elephants, spotted deer, mongoose, water buffalo, rare birds, and much more. Thanks to the lodge’s priority access, and after the sighting of a jackal, a symbol of good luck, we were fortunate enough to spot the elusive leopard and even a black bear on an early morning safari. Drinking and dining unfold in the breezy open-air restaurant, where an eclectic selection of Sri Lankan and international dishes, made with local ingredients, is served. Swimming and lounging take place at the stunning infinity pool, which flows down the middle of the bar and restaurant, while sun loungers spill down the sand dunes overlooking the sea. Private cooking classes are also available if you’re keen to take home the secrets of a fine Sri Lankan curry. And the warm staff will make you feel entirely deserving of the mimosa-fuelled breakfasts. You’ll leave feeling well taken care of, immersed in nature, and well-fed, ready to return with everyone you know. GOING DUTCH ON THE ART AND HEART IN
Amsterdam
Trains, frames and starry, starry nights
Culture queens and kings, if you have a few days to spend in Amsterdam and want to visit some of the city’s cultural best, you’ve got a lot of difficult choices to make with around 75 museums and galleries at your disposal. To help you with your day tour dilemma we’ve put together a guide to some of the city’s best loved art hubs. And honestly, sometimes the path most travelled is the way to do it, especially if it’s your first time visiting a place.
WHERE TO STAY
Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam
Located in the heart of Amsterdam right opposite the Royal Palace of Amsterdam is five-star Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky – a hotel with a charming history. The building was purchased by Mr Krasnapolsky in 1865 who turned it into a coffee house. Fuelled by ambition, Mr Krasnapolsky expanded his cafe by acquiring a second adjacent building, today known as the Grand Cafe Krasnapolsky. But the dream was still incomplete. Expansions took place again in 1883 with the introduction of 125 rooms. Later in 1927, the hotel was further extended and the entrance shifted in the direction of Dam Square. Nearly a century later, after years of refurbishment and extensive renovations, the hotel is now known as Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky with a total of 451 rooms and suites.
We know the phrase ‘heart of the city’ is used too loosely these days, but it certainly rings true for this Anantara hotel. You’re an 11-minute walk away from the Amsterdam Central Station and a 15-minute tram ride away from Museumplein where some of the top museums are.
If you’ve set your heart on this Amsterdam Dam-located hotel, there are premier rooms, deluxe rooms, a presidential suite and a royal suite. Your views can either be the stunning Dam Square which, is forever bustling with tourists and residents, or you have unique views of the canals of Amsterdam. At night, if you’ve opted for a Dam
Square view, catch the sky changing colours and clouds passing by as it sets behind the gorgeous palace.
Guests staying at the hotel can refuel with a breakfast spread at the historic Wintergarden. You will tuck into international bites under a lofty glass ceiling dating back to 1880, which fills the area with natural light. Our top tip: Arrive to breakfast early to enjoy at a leisurely pace. It also ensures you will leave the hotel on time to beat the crowds at the museums or attractions of the day.
After your day of exploring, head back to the hotel and indulge at Michelin-Starred The White Room, a restaurant, which was unveiled by the owner in 1885, deeming it one of Amsterdam’s oldest. For sips, cocktail bar The Tailor serves up drinks so good it has picked up awards. But if you want a memorable meal, head to the modern yet elegant Grand Café Krasnapolsky, which serves afternoon tea, lunch and dinner.
If you need some pampering after reaching peak step count during your trip, make a booking at the Anantara Spa and allow the team to work out those aches and pains. Oh, and if you have spare time during your trip, the hotel is also home to a 24-hour gym.
Room rates start from Dhs1,180 for rooms in November.

THINGS TO DO
VAN GOGH MUSEUM
If you’re even the slightest fan of Dutch artist, Vincent van Gogh, this museum will be the highlight of your trip. The Van Gogh Museum located in Museumplein is devoted to the life and work of the impressionist artist, home to over 200 paintings and almost 500 drawings. No Starry Night here, but you can visit many of his famous works, including Sunflowers (1889), The Bedroom (1888), Irises (1890), Almond Blossoms (1890), and The Potato Eaters (1885). If you quickly bounce from one painting to the other, you can easily finish the museum within 90 minutes, but if you want to take in the brush strokes, hang onto every word of the audio guide, expect to spend at least three to four hours.
TOP TIP: Book tickets well in advance, and visit first thing at 9am to enjoy an almost one-on-one experience with Van Gogh. Take the audio guide, it is worth your euros. Dhs88 per adult, under 18s free, vangoghmuseum.nl
KRÖLLER-MÜLLER MUSEUM
ANNE FRANK HOUSE
Your visit to Amsterdam will be marked incomplete without a visit to the Anne Frank House. You may have read her famous diary, or seen documentaries or films narrating her and her family’s life during her two years in hiding before they were betrayed, but nothing brings the story any closer to life than visiting the actual house. Inside, visitors will get to see the original bookcase that hid the door to the secret annex, Anne Frank’s room, and even Anne Frank’s diary, which survived the war. A highlight of the visit? When the audio guide goes silent as you walk through the secret annex allowing you to experience how quiet the family had to be as soon as the sun came up.
TOP TIP: Book your tickets well in advance as they sell out. Try to read The Diary of Anne Frank before your visit, and don’t forget the free audio guide. At the shop you can pick up postcards for memorabilia, an empty diary, and even a special 75th anniversary of the first edition of Anne Frank’s diary.

If you want more Van Gogh, block a day to visit the Kröller-Müller Museum, home to the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. The museum is a train and two bus rides away in Otterlo. It is home to the spellbinding Café Terrace at Night (1888), Four Sunflowers Gone to Seed (1887) – a personal favourite – and Bridge at Arles (1888). Due to thinner crowds, you truly feel like you’re on a private tour. Besides Van Gogh, you can also find masterpieces by Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondriaan. The museum is also located in a National Park called Hoge Veluwe, a 13,343-acre park where you can enjoy a sculpture garden, nature, wildlife and horse riding.
TOP TIP: Plan well, book your tickets and stay alert for the announcements on public transportation. You will also need a ticket to enter the park to access the museum. Park - Dhs26 children (six to 12), Dhs52 adults above 12. hogeveluwe.nl Museum Dhs52 per adult, Dhs26 per child (13 to 18), under 12s free, krollermuller.nl
The Rijksmuseum is one of the world’s most famous museums and home to Dutch masterpieces, including the Night Watch by Rembrandt (which during my visit was under restoration), The Milkmaid by Vermeer, self-portrait by Van Gogh, and 8,000 other works of art. You can easily spend half a day here but break up your art pilgrimage with coffee or a meal in the museum.
TOP TIP: Download the Rijksmuseum app for a free audio guide and pick up a map at the museum before you begin. You’re also within walking distance of Rembrandt Experience.
Over 18s Dhs90, under 18s free, rijksmuseum.nl
REMBRANDT HOUSE MUSEUM
Walk through the doors of The Rembrandt House Museum and you’ve entered the Dutch artist’s world back in the 17th century. Based on a journal entry by Rembrandt himself, curators were able to lay out his home the way it was all those years ago. As you walk through, you learn about his early life, his family, where he worked, his studio and etches and the room where he taught his students. You can tour the museum at your own pace with the help of an audio guide. TOP TIP: Spend time listening to the staff as they explain how Rembrandt would have mixed his paints, and if you want to take a piece of Rembrandt home with you, pick up an etching from the shop. Dhs80 per adult, Dhs40 young adult (19 to 25), rembrandthuis.nl
ROYAL PALACE AMSTERDAM
Ever walked by a palace and wondered what it looked like on the inside? The Royal Palace Amsterdam is a magnificent building bragging Baroque architecture used by the Dutch Royal House. But it also welcomes visitors where you can enjoy Amsterdam’s rich history. It was Amsterdam’s Town Hall for 150 years, and its interiors are just as stunning, adorned with paintings, sculptures, and important items of history. On the ground floor, you will find the tribunal area decorated elaborately with the marble works of sculptor Artus Quellinus. While the craft is mesmerising, ensure you listen to the audio guide to hear about this space’s interesting history.
TOP TIP: Since the venue is also used for official royal events and state ceremonies, check their website before confirming plans for the day so to not make a mess of your schedule. Dhs50 per adult, under 18s free, paleisamsterdam.nl
If you want to break up your museum-packed schedule, book a Wine & Cheese Canal Tour, visit the stores by the Amsterdam Dam and pick up your souvenirs and stroopwafels, visit Tony’s Chocolonely and make your own chocolate bar, and head to A’DAM Lookout for endless views of Amsterdam.
IMMERSIVE ART EXPERIENCES
VAN GOGH X REMBRANDT
At Noorderkerk (Dutch for northern church) is a 17th-century Protestant church, a spot visited by Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt. Although the two Dutch masters did not meet, this digital exhibition showcases how Rembrandt’s work had a significant impact on van Gogh. On the inner walls and roof of the church, we see a 45-minute projection of both their works on one canvas, with van Gogh’s ‘voice’ filling the silent space (which we know is true as they are words taken from his letters to his brother, Theo).
Dhs68 per adult, Dhs13 per child (six to 17), under 5s free, vangoghinamsterdam.com
REMBRANDT EXPERIENCE
If touring Rijksmuseum has made your feet sore, amble over to Rembrandt Experience where you can sit back, relax and listen to the story of Rembrandt. The 25-minute experience invites you to step back in time to 1663 and visit the artist’s last studio. Through video projections, sound, scents, and music, you will go on a journey of the painter’s life. Before you leave don’t forget to get a photo from the AI Rembrandt Portrait Generator and walk home with a historic portrait prepared in Rembrandt’s style.
Prices from Dhs58 per person, rembrandtsamsterdam.com

If what you’re seeking is photos for the ‘Gram besides the stunning canals, head to Moco Museum. December might be front of mind when you think of festive calendar real estate, but the month before has some pretty big celebrations too. These are just some of the most exciting, colourful, and culturally vibrant festivals happening around the world this month.
Diwali
Novemberpalooza
November really is a month to celebrate
Where: India and across the world
When: October 29 to November 3, 2024
Known as the festival of lights, Diwali is the five-day Hindu celebration of life and the triumph of good over evil. It begins with Dhanteras – where oil lamps are kept burning throughout the night to invite the Goddess Lakshmi into the home. The second day is Choti Diwali (or small Diwali), marked with earthen lamps aglow and the lit fuses of firecrackers. This day celebrates the victory of Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama over the demon. The third day – the main day of the festival, is Deepawali where prayers are dedicated to Lakshmi and sweets and gifts are shared with loved ones. The next day is Govardhan Puja, dedicated to Lord Krishna, for protecting the villagers on Govardhan Hill from torrential rains. The festival’s last day is Bhai Dooj – a day dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes out for rangoli, colourful art decorations on the floor created using powders and petals; marvel at the diyas (the decorative lights outside homes), and feast on delicious Indian sweets. 01
Dia De Los Muertos
Where: Widely observed across Mexico
When: November 1 and 2, 2024
Also known as Day of the Dead or All Souls Day, Dia De Los Muertos – shares a startling number of similarities with the origins of Halloween (including rough dates, symbology and reverence of the dead). But whilst All Hallow’s Eve has undergone a gradual commercialisation, its Mexican counterpart has retained its authenticity. Until this day it remains a time to honour and remember loved ones who have passed away. It centres around the belief that death is not the end of the journey, rather a continuation. Altars (or ofrendas) are created where the deceased receive their favourite food and drinks, and their graves are often decorated. Family and friends typically mark the occasion with a dinner sharing stories about the deceased. Pan de Muertos, a bread baked at home and covered with sugar, is eaten and loved ones get together to create sugar skulls with colourful designs.
03
Giant Kite Festival
Where: Guatemala
When: November 1, 2024
One of the best times to visit this Central America country is during the Festival de Barriletas Gigantes, or the Giant Kite Festival. It’s a festival that honours the dead by launching giant kites made from paper, cloth, patches and bamboo frames, up into the wild blue skies. In the past, the kites were used as a way of communication with departed ancestors. Now, the kites are a symbol of peace and compassion for the living, they’re totems for social justice issues ranging from women’s rights to pollution. Visitors attending the festival are mesmerised by the myriad colours, music, dancing and traditional festival foods. During the festival many adherents also head to gravesites to honour their dearly departed with flowers, wreaths, and baskets of festive food.
04
Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights
Where: Canada
When: November 16, 2024 to January 5, 2025
This colourful, illuminating light festival began in 1982 where it drew in a respectable 250,000 visitors with its collection near the falls. The Winter Festival of Lights transforms what is often unofficially called, the eighth Natural Wonder of the World into a kaleidoscope of twinkling lights, engaging displays and immersive experiences. Visitors of all ages can walk the pathway and enjoy the larger-than-life showpieces, trees wrapped in the intermittent sparkle of LEDs, glowed-up landscapes, an illuminated tunnel and of course – the falls themselves which become a gorgeous moving light display. The wonderful experience is free.
Bon Om Touk
Where: Across Cambodia
When: November 14 to 16, 2024
Bon Om Touk or the Cambodia Water Festival is one of the biggest celebrations in Cambodia to mark the end of the rainy season. It takes place across the Southeast Asian nation in various forms from boat races in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, to feasts, dances and performances in the smaller communities. The main spotlight however, it on the Tonle Sap River in Phnom Penh, where a meteorological (monsoon-related) phenomenon causes the river to reverse its course and return to the mighty Mekong River. It leaves behind rich sediments which helps farmers along its shores. Here, a royal dragon boat race takes place between brightly painted boats holding around 40 team members until a winner is crowned. You can join the cheering crowds, visit vendors serving traditional food, and enjoy an enthralling firework display in the evening.
05
American Thanksgiving
Where: United States of America
When: The fourth Thursday of November (Nov 28 in 2024)
There’s much more to Thanksgiving than the overeating of roast turkey and face-cramming of yams. It’s a many layered celebration with harvest festival origins, initiated in the New World by the colonizing European Pilgrims. Today, it’s a call for families to gather from however far they are apart and count their blessings together in respectful communion. Literally – a day of giving thanks. Mainstays of the modern-day rites and rituals include big retail sales, the watching of sports games, and Thanksgiving parades. The annual Macy’s event in New York is probably the best known and most warmly-adored of all the Thanksgiving Day Parades and involves elaborate floats, theatrical Broadway performances and massive character balloons. Beyond the more material celebrations, many Americans choose to volunteer at homeless shelters and give back to the community.

It’s easy to spend an entire day here, lounging poolside, soaking in the stunning mountain vistas.

Hatta Dome Park’s prime attraction is undoubtedly Hatta Wadi Hub, which caters
