I’m still not entirely sure what an Editor’s Letter is for. I enjoy them most when they feel personal, like writing a letter to a friend. I figured early on in this job that if I’m going to be telling you what to spend your hardearned dirhams on, then we should get acquainted along the way.

But while I may sign off on the editor’s letter, introducing you to each wonderful issue, it’s an entire team of creative-thinking, hard-working individuals that put it together. As I thumbed through the pages of this issue, I was reminded of what a collaborative process it is, bringing together a magazine designed to inspire where you eat, drink, experience, and travel.

So, this month, I’m going to use this space not just to introduce you to our cover story – which sees our deputy editor Miles create his case to retreat from the city and glue your eyes to the skies for some sensational stargazing – but also some fantastic features from the rest of our team, that I hope have you as inspired as I was reading them. Dreaming of the cinnamon cruffin from… Milk Bakery and Café

One of our lovely readers recommended Milk at Wasl 51, so I had to look into it. I recently got the Dyson Airstrait to test on my curly hair and find out if it’s worth the money (Dhs1,999). Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions, to favourite staycations and beloved hidden gems. This month, we chat to Aida AlBusaidy (@aidaalbusaidy), associate VP of consumer advocacy at the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), a mother, speaker, Emcee, and proud Dubai native. Here, she shares some of her favourite spots in the city.

One of my go-to spots is a farmhouse in Lahbab, along the Dubai-Al Ain road. It’s the perfect place to unwind, play some board games, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

A hidden gem in Dubai that I love is Al Bada’a, located between Satwa and Jumeirah 1. It’s a cosy neighbourhood with a real old Dubai feel, just a short bike ride from City Walk. You’ll find locals walking their dogs, small grocery stores selling snacks like Chips Oman with laban, and even unique finds like Vimto popsicles.

One family-friendly spot I love is Kite Beach. It’s perfect for a day out with the kids because of its open space and variety of activities. Another favourite is Global Village, where you can explore different cultures and enjoy entertainment for all ages. @kitebeachdubai @globalvillageuae

One of my go-to cafes in Dubai is Society Dubai on Jumeirah Road. It’s got a cosy, traditional vibe that I love, especially in the morning. It’s my spot for getting work done or just unwinding with a good cup of coffee. @societyuae

I live near Nad Al Sheba 1, which has some great spots like a peaceful pond area and a lovely park. I also enjoy gazing upon the beautiful mosques in the area for some quiet reflection.

There’s this restaurant in JLT that truly wowed me – it’s Franky’s Pizzeria. The experience was so nice that I’d definitely make the drive back just to dine there again. The whole vibe, from the elevator ride up to the meal itself, was genuinely impressive. @frankyspizzeria

It’s hard to believe that back in 1989 we were celebrating one of What’s On’s first big anniversaries, with the brand turning a decade old that year. That same year – as well as putting on fabulous events in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Muscat to celebrate our 10th birthday – we introduced a new feature in the magazine to reflect the Gulf’s glittering social scene. In the decade that I had been editing What’s On, the number of community, entertainment, and hospitality events had grown exponentially, and ever keen to report on what was ‘on’ across the region, we launched our ‘Tatler’ section that year. Our new look round-up of the people, places, and faces to know became the region’s must-read social supplement, covering everything from industry appointments to society weddings, community events, and visits from international superstars.

In the issue that came out this month 35 years ago, May 1989, that included a brilliant behind-the-scenes snap of UB40 as they embarked on a sellout

tour of the Gulf. Those Tatler pages also featured snaps of Liverpool FC’s then-manager Kenny Dalglish vacationing in the emirates; and celebrated landscape artist John Western making his return to Dubai, this time to capture the rustic architecture of the Bastikiya area on canvas. That year was also a landmark moment as we opened our first Motivate Publishing office in Abu Dhabi, and a photo of our first visitor – Maria Kazan, then PR of the Sheraton – arriving with a box of pastries for our hard-working team also made it into the Tatler pages of the May 1989 issue.

Our editorial time capsule to what was hip and happening in the Gulf was a key feature in the magazine for over a decade, featuring famous faces including royals, actors, musicians, artists, and sports stars.

For the entirety of their existence, humans have stared into the space above their heads and attempted to draw meaning from the yawning chasm of the cosmos. Some of us see the finger prints of deities and intelligent design, or alien worlds and ancestral planes; others – Big Dippers, constellations of the Zodiac and celestial excuses for a suspiciously wide range of personality flaws; or for a scientist – the light that reaches their eye might be the last exile of a star long-burned cold or another

phantom clue to the mystery behind the origin of everything. Whatever you see when you look up into the pixel-flecked firmament – the UAE is a wonderful place to practise this ancient pastime. Our skies are relatively unblotted by clouds for most of the year, and when we move away from the incandescence of the city, the stars multiply in number and brightness. Our task today is to find the best places to go stargazing in the UAE, what to pack for the trip, and what we can expect to see when we get there.

Jebel Hafit Desert Park

One way to give yourself a little leg up in the stargazing stakes is to get as much altitude as possible. Jebel Hafit is Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, and although it’s only fractionally closer to the twinkling marbles overhead – its rocky pedestal takes you above the denser atmosphere, beyond the fog and the haze, giving you a more HD experience for the celestial show. It’s a bit of a drive from the UAE’s big cities (around two and a half hours from Dubai, and two hours from Abu Dhabi), but the great thing about this destination is that there’s a Pura Eco glamping resort offering a range of tented and lodge accommodation (priced from Dhs450). There are also pitches for DIY camping priced from Dhs150. @jebelhafitdesertpark

Al Quaa Milky Way Spot

The sort of place you’d expect to visit when an astrophysicist says “I know a spot”. This stellar Abu Dhabi nook is about as-remote-a-sky-staring snug as you’ll find in the UAE, and its precise GPS digits used to be a closely gatekept secret. But amateur astronomers are a progressive bunch – maybe all that cosmic pondering gives them an innate reverence for transcending the self, perhaps it’s a contagious case of the space crazies – whatever the reason, the location is now easily Google-able online and there’s even a casual camping hub that’s sprung up near by. It’s about two and a half hours from Dubai, and 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi city, requires an SUV for ingress, and as the name suggests, can provide some galactically good long exposure photo ops of our native star cluster’s stunning spiral arm.

What is undoubtedly one of the best-known stargazing locations in the UAE, Al Qudra is easily reachable from Dubai. Which, because of light pollution, is also its main detraction. The best advice is to head a little further out, beyond the lakes and along the cycle track – to a more remote spot, shy of headlights and hubbub. Because of luminosity levels – a telescope may be your best option here, you can find inexpensive ones online that will allow you at least a ‘lite’ version of the James Webb experience.

Another great locale for watching the heavens cook, this Ras Al Khaimah gem’s natural wadiscape brings all the hikers to its yard. It’s conveniently located for Dubai’s star-struck up-lookers, at less than an hour’s drive from the metropolis’ Downtown. Star pupils make sure they arrive in daylight hours to scope out a suitable camping spot, and make the most of the clean mountain air. If you’re feeling adventurous there are lakes in them there Shawka Trail hills, and a kids’ play area (with barbecue pits) near the dam.

To help you get the most out of your UAE stargazing trip, we spoke to an esteemed regional ambassador for the night sky – Khadijah Ahmad, Operations Manager of the Dubai Astronomy Group.

If you don’t have a telescope, which constellations are the best ones to look out for?

Orion, Ursa Major (containing the Big Dipper), Cygnus, and Cassiopeia.

Which times of year can we catch the annual meteor showers?

The Perseids peak around August 12 and Geminids on December 14, these are the most prominent meteor showers. They can be observed without telescopes, preferably after midnight, from dark locations away from city lights.

What time of year is best for stargazing in general?

Stargazing is favourable throughout the year in the UAE. However, cooler months, particularly from October to March, provide clearer skies and more comfortable weather for extended observation sessions.

What’s the most beautiful thing in the sky for you?

For me, the most beautiful celestial object is the Milky Way galaxy stretching across the night sky, especially when observed from a remote location far from light pollution such as Al Quaa Desert in Abu Dhabi.

What’s your favourite space fact?

As of now, thousands of exoplanets (planets orbiting stars outside our solar system) have been discovered. Some of these exoplanets are located within the habitable zone of their parent stars, where conditions might be suitable for the existence of liquid water and, potentially, life as we know it.

Prior to living in Dubai, the idea of a supper club didn’t really appeal to me. It was an image problem. The very idea of it just conjured stale vignettes of long, starched-linen dining tables populated by guffawing Old Etonians chugging port and holding court on cravat portfolios and the golden age of the transistor radio. But tuning into the Dubai scene has completely dismantled all of those assumptions.

These supper clubs represent a community

of chefs who are putting their money where your mouth is. Without a restaurant group or hedge fund behind them to bankroll a new competitive eatery, these industrious souls tarmac their own road to market, often as a side hustle to another full-time job. The artful start-ups are an outlet of creativity, incubators of passion, which can and do eventually lead to permanent brick and mortar stores. As was the case for the brilliant Fusion Ceviche, Hawkerboi, and Kinoya, to name just a few.

That’s the Dubai dream in a flamboyantly presented, tuille-renderednutshell though, right? The road to success is accessible – built on hard work, talent and, sure, a bit of luck.

The benefit to you as supper club supporter is the possibility of discovering a future phenomenon at grassroots level. The chance of sampling genuine gastronomic genius, at reasonable prices, before the rest of the world finds out about it. And so we went undercover and on record to bring you the very best of Dubai’s super secret supper clubs.

Hosted by the deliciously mysterious and extravagantly gifted Madam Vo, this DIFCbased supper club rotates its nights around certain themes. There are evenings where Vietnamese influences lead the menu; others where the bubbling pots of Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong district take the wheel; and then there are those warm Bavarian nights, which orbit around the underappreciated Munchen majesty of German cuisine. K’iin is an underground dining experience spiritually linked to the flavour heartlands of Mexico, led by star chef Jonathan Colin. It’s an intimate, candlelit supper where fine dining fuego is reframed with a more sociable edge. The sevencourse tasting menu pays homage to Jon’s Mexican heritage as well as his experiences across top French and Japanese restaurants, and true to the supper club code – there’s a story behind every dish. On the menu, guests can expect authentic Latin dishes seen through a modern lens including scallop aguachile, beef tartare and buñuelo de viento, and grilled octopus ‘al pastor’.

What’s On verdict: K’iin Supper Club really is a passion project. Aside from a happy and full belly, you’ll leave with meaningful new connections and a dining experience you won’t forget.

Chef Scott Henry, hosts his theatre of foodie themes in a converted residential space in JVT. “I hope you’re hungry” he said when we visited “I’ve been in the kitchen for days”. It’s no exaggeration either, the preparation required for that evening is staggering.

Chef Scott’s career as a private chef to the rich, famous and upwardly yacht-mobile has taken him across the globe, acquiring secret culinary skills and experimenting in the molecular gastronomy realm. There were 600 individual ingredients in that evening’s five-course menu, I’d struggle to even think of half that number of edible items. Moreish by K

Head chef and creator of Moreish by K, Kunwal Safdar has become a wellknown name in the Dubai food scene. From humble beginnings as a pandemic passion project, her zero-waste supper club has become one of the city’s most talked-about. The cuisine embodies her rich cultural background, fusing together flavours from the Emirates, Punjab and Persia. Kuv’s Secret Supper Club

This is a bit of a special one, a supper club that is – as we write this – making the leap from guarded guestlists and secret rendezvous to a dedicated IRL, walls ‘n’ all, restaurant. Given life through the phenomenal kitchen craft of chef Ionel Catau, the new forever home of Gerbou comes to us in collaboration with art collective, Tashkeel and the titan-tier New York culinary group import, Atelier House Hospitality. Gerbou is taken from the Arabic for ‘welcome to our humble abode’ and, as the name suggests, majors in delivering experiences that pay homage to Middle Eastern cuisines past, present and future. It’s also likely to be another strong contributor to showing off the finer points of Emirati food culture to the rest of the world. And it’s due to open very soon.

One of the city’s longest running supper clubs is helmed by architect-turned-chef, Kuv. Born in Bahrain, raised in London, and now in Dubai, Kuv is one of the supper club culture’s founding fathers in the UAE and his core foodie focus is doing wonderful things with the flavours of North Africa and the Middle East. He frequently switches up his menus, which remain a closely guarded secret until the night (it’s worth noting that dietary requirements can be catered to though), to the extent that his Splidu page (where you make reservations) is currently taking bookings for iteration 201 (Dhs375).

The Italian Supper

It’s tough to beat an evening out at a supper club, but having a team of pizza magicians to come and cook at your place might just be one way of topping it. Another example of a Dubai success story, chef Fabio and Flavio left their day jobs to pursue their passion and start their own supper club, The Italian Supper. The CBF Express

This private soiree is hosted by the charismatic and talented chef Roseanne Orim, and provides a platform for what is undoubtedly one of the most underrepresented culinary superpowers in Dubai – that of West Africa. The CBF Express (full name ChopBelleFull Express) takes place at a secret location in Business Bay, with (as is the way with these supper clubs), precise coordinates only given upon a confirmed booking. Chef Roseanne began the supper club back in December 2022 with a mission to celebrate and share the diverse mix of cuisine from across the West African region. The variety of wildlife at the park is quite impressive, and includes tigers, gibbons, moon bears, lions, elephants, giraffes, camels, Arabian onyx, Arabian wolves, mountain gazelles and beyond into the animal kingdom. Besides observing these animals in rough approximations of their natural habitat, there is also a range of uber cool edutainment activities and attractions to get stuck into. Cinema Akil in 25hours

Everyone’s favourite outdoor market for all things vintage, small business, artisanal, homegrown and gourmet shuts down in the summer every year, around May. So hurry up and visit before the chance slips away. Ripe Market is a weekend affair, pitching tent in the Police Academy Park on Saturdays and Sundays with pop-up stalls, food vendors, classes and workshops, entertainment and loads more to see and do. It’s the go-to spot if you’re looking to support local, stock up on fresh foods and healthy produce. It’s a fun day out with your family and friends, and definitely different from the typical mall crawling we must resort to come summer.

Alfresco arthouse cinema sounds like a romantic winter dream and it very much is. This reimagining of the Alserkal Avenue original is an open-air pop-up, dressed in Cinema Akil’s signature ‘movie theatre red’ that’s a loving callback to the Golden Age of the silver sreen. The entire area has been set up in the atrium of the 25hours Hotel at One Central, which was always intended to be a multipurpose communal space. Although stunning, watching a movie as you slowly dehydrate probably isn’t topping your summer to-do list, which is why now is the perfect time to catch all the classics on show. Dubai Garden Glow

This neon haven of all shapes and sizes is located inside Zabeel Park, and is an entirely outdoor lit-up walkthrough attraction. Garden Glow is another one of those familyfriendly destinations where little ones will be amazed by the towering glowing shapes. There are a number of sections inside the park – Glow Park, Dinosaur Park, Magic Park and Art Park, each with different installations. In Glow Park you’ll see moving flowers and butterfly paths, while the Magic Park has over 25 fun exhibits and 3D artworks. Hatta Wadi Hub is without a doubt one of the most exciting outdoor areas to explore in the UAE. It’s the complete getaway, with lots of nature, challenging terrain and experiences that will take you off the beaten track. If you’re keen to swap the cityscape and the pavements for some mountains and adventure, now is the time to do it. The entire cluster of Hatta’s tourist experiences takes a break during the summer months – that would include the glamping, the hiking, mountain biking, archery, zorbing, ziplines, axe-throwing, paragliding and horse riding among other things. The Dubai desert safari

The desert safari is a quintessentially Dubai experience. And whilst the desert does tend to be cooler than the city, this is mostly at night, hence your window for desert safari-ing reduces considerably during the summer, and the best safari should take you from daylight to moonlight.

Al Qudra Lakes

If you’re looking for the perfect picnic spot, Al Qudra Lakes might just be it. These artificial lakes in the heart of Dubai’s desert are best enjoyed in the cooler months when you can camp by the lakefront, or enjoy some bites from the food trucks. It’s also a great place to spot native Dubai wildlife in their natural habitat including desert foxes, oryx, and a number of bird species on the endangered list, such as the steppe eagle and the Asian houbara.

Dubai Gold Souk

The rest of the city might have evolved, spawning tall towers, stacked houses and all the luxury facilities of today. But the Souk remains traditional. There’s a gold and spice market to explore, and also some shops with trinkets and souvenirs. The tiny lanes are all open air and some of them have rustic wooden archways. It’s a wonderful glimpse into a different face of the city, away from all the glitz and glamour.

Dubai has some incredible outdoor venues and terraces with stunning views – and this is probably the last month to enjoy them before summer strikes. So use this as a sign to book in that girls’ get-together over dinner, drinks and dancing at one of these top outdoor ladies’ nights…

SUNDAY ROAST AT DINNER BY HESTON

The three-course Sunday lunch is priced at Dhs495 per person, but can this high-grade roast rival a homecooked feast?

Walking into Dinner by Heston feels like stepping into another era. The medievalinspired British restaurant is unlike any other in Dubai – you’re met with a giant mechanical pineapple clock, Tudor motifs, and a wow-factor open kitchen.

Helmed by British chef extraordinaire Tom Allen, Dinner by Heston has quickly become a bucket-list restaurant and even managed to snag a Michelin Star within months of opening.

Amidst the venue’s decadence and drama, it’s the introduction of a quintessentially British tradition – the Sunday roast – that piques our interest. It’s an experience (roasties to rival your

mum’s, Yorkshire pudding, glass of red wine or two, getting dressed up, a post lunch nap etc) that has proven tough to replicate here in Dubai.

The Sunday roast, a soul-warming ode to tradition dating back to medieval Tudor times, finds its rightful place at Dinner by Heston.

At Dhs495 per person for a three-course lunch and Dhs295 for children, we came to discover whether this Michelin Star Sunday roast was worth the price tag.

Choosing a starter is easy when the iconic signature Meat Fruit is on the menu – a silky rich chicken liver parfait disguised as a mandarin, served with charred bread. The tomato salamagundy offers a lighter vegetarian alternative to start.

Just before the main course is served, the waiter comes over with a roast potato preview — reminiscent of sneaking one from your mum’s pan when she wasn’t looking. Arguably one of the most important things on the plate, the roasties here are the crispiest and most glorious shade of golden brown we’ve ever had.

The Hereford sirloin is expertly carved into perfectly pink slices and served with Yorkshire pudding, horseradish cream, and beef gravy, while the extra juicy chicken, rolled into three pieces with flavour-packed skin, is served with veal and herb stuffing.

impresses served with truffle and mushroom sauce – the perfect balance of texture and flavours.

The mains are served with buttery carrots and shredded Brussels sprouts with beef pancetta and chestnut. Everything on the plate has been well thought out and made with passion. So much so, we’re salivating thinking about it again. It would be impossible to cook up a roast this good at home.

Ladies and gentlemen of the imaginary jury, I’m sure the opposing counsel will try to draw your attention to any giddy nostalgia or fond memories you might hold for this, what was once a grand institution. But you must not be dazzled by their winning smiles, infectious joie de vivre and deft turn of phrase... if you examine Exhibit B carefully, you

will clearly see, it has performed its last jostling elbowed run at the seafood table. The chocolate fountain has run dry, we must bid buffet brunches a final farewell. Sure, there was a time when their gluttonous excess could be conscionably digested, but now – in the Thunberg era of zero waste and renewable drinking straws – those ideals, like the gnarled khubz at 4pm on the live shawarma station, have turned rather stale. Times change, cultures move on and we must embrace the new, or risk getting left behind. Besides, the fresh winds of a la carte brunching, with sharing starters and mains au choix

surely represent a more sophisticated, higher food quality format. Out with the mass-catered mixed-temp lasagna, in with precision grilled, a la minute antichuchos Viva la brunching revolution comrades. I’ll rest my argument on one final point – but its an important one. Which other culinary engagement would you pile a plate high with little regard for the mix of fare on it? The only one I can think of, is a child’s birthday party. I put it to you, that it’s time to blow out the candles and take off the party hats, brunch is too old for that now, we should let it live with dignity.

MAISON DE LA PLAGE

The perfect coastal escape

Maison De La Plage fills your heart with sunshine. It’s a portal of sorts, taking you by the hand with that signature Chef Izu Ani megawatt smile that never fades and travelling across space and time to the refreshing Riviera of France.

Another jewel in Chef Izu’s crown of hospitality, the restaurant and beach club sitting on Palm West Beach is bright and shiny from daylight to moonlight, a transition, which I have had the good fortune of experiencing.

AMBIANCE

As we step into the restaurant that gives way to the outdoor seating by the pool,

there is a sense of departure from the typical Dubai landscape. The interiors are white and lavish, but understated quiet luxury, as one would say. Tones of beige and brown complement the elements of green from the foliage and the space is perfectly reminiscent of a modern countryside farm. We’re seated by the pool, on the sand. In the evenings, the energy is colourful and vibrant with dinner patrons enjoying the last of the Dubai winter as it slips away.

FOOD

The beef carpaccio with Parmesan cheese and truffle dressing (Dhs125) is a salty affair, and one we polish off too soon. For the mains, we choose the Izu burger (Dhs135) and the gnocchi with sorrentina, basil and mozzarella (Dhs95). The burger is a classic, with a brioche bun lashed in butter, Emmenthal cheese that offers a glorious stretch and quality Wagyu beef. You can taste the difference. The gnocchi dish is just melt-in-your-mouth goodness, steeped in more sweet tomatoes and cheese.

The burrata with heirloom cherry tomatoes and pesto salad (Dhs90) is a delightful explosion of flavours, juicy, tart and creamy all at the same time. The tang of the tomatoes smeared on the crunchy brown bread with the rich burrata is a winning combination of flavours and textures.

To conclude, we order the Hokkaido cheese ice cream with roasted strawberries (Dhs100), unaware of the portion size –it’s enough to feed four people and we’re only two. It’s a pleasant surprise, for sure, and so is the soft serve itself. There’s a salty, malty-ness to it, almost like salted caramel without the excessive sugar.

When Banyan Tree took over from Caesars, we had to say farewell to a few popular restaurants

Fortunately for Dubai’s dining public, fan favourite Demon Duck by Chef Alvin Leung, remains. But does its brunch still pack a punch, or has it quacked under the pressure of a new stewardship? We went along to find out…

UNDER THE CANOPY

While the interiors of the venue are quirky with scattered duck-themed prints, the outdoor seating is where to position yourself while there’s still bearable weather. Underneath a canopy of trees, on the grass, the ocean lulling in the background just above the hedges – it’s a starkly different setting than the dimly lit but equally vibey restaurant.

THE DUCK

We’re taking an express tour through the starters because the main event is a dish

that belongs in the all-time Dubai dining Hall of Fame. Get the wagyu dumplings – juicily unruly scrappy little gems. The crispy duck hummus is a surprisingly deft twist on a regional classic. And the sweet and sour notes of the scallop ceviche helped it win out as the table’s favourite entrée. But then ‘it’ arrived, and nothing else seemed to matter. Alvin Leung’s slow roasted, 14-day-aged duck is a masterpiece (so good it’s mentioned twice in our intro). The fat is rendered to an immaculate crisp and paired with the hoisin and calamansi sauce on the spongy bao bun, that interplay of textures and taste notes

is so beautifully orchestrated, eating it is just unadulterated joy. It’s worth noting that the duck carries a Dhs400 supplementary charge, but it’s good for four people at least, carved tableside, divided between diners, and beyond worth the indulgent splurge.

DUCKING AND DIVING

A collection of Demon Ducks’ finest desserts were brought to the table, framed by a cartoonishly dramatic chocolate rubber duck filled with lychee foam. Like chef Leung himself, its playful exterior hides a soul that means business.

LA DAME DE PIC

Can this Grande Dame of the food world win over Dubai’s dining public?

The word ‘icon’ is thrown around a little too liberally these days, but it’s hard to see Chef AnneSophie Pic as anything but. The French food artist, affectionately known as “the world’s most decorated female chef”, has accrued countless accolades in her otherwise male-dominated industry. Pic’s first UAEbased restaurant, La Dame De Pic – has enjoyed Michelin recognition at its locations in Paris (one Star), London (two Stars), Singapore (one Star) and Megève, France (one Star) –so anticipation for this project has been high, and our interest in it, uniquely Pic-d.

Your dining options at La Dame De Pic come via a series of set menus – Harmony (Dhs695) consists of five courses, and Symphony (Dhs915) is composed of seven. Each of the curated culinary trails has its own vegetarian pathway (Harmony also offers a full vegan option), a demonstration of chef Pic’s commitment to creative inclusivity.

We delighted in the Symphony menu – which actually adds up to a total of 10 courses when you include the three amuse bouches and palate cleansers. And you can accompany your degustation with a drink pairing package – a series of masterful mixology either with or without alcohol.

While yes, there are the frills of foam and gels, sea urchin and other ingredients often caveated with being ‘acquired tastes’ (see: geranium ice cream). But it’s all with just cause. Everything that was placed at the table was intelligently crafted and perfectly balanced in a fun or romantically considered way.

On the topic of gels, foam and savoury ice cream, the first course contained two of those culprits, and yet still emerged as a standout favourite. Hand-dived scallop ceviche is served with a geranium roast ice cream, sake gel and a crunchy German turnip. The

dish is topped with a slight smattering of caviar, typically not something I’m drawn to. However, paired with the ice cream and the sake gel, the salty fish egg flavour lights up your eyes and elevates the subtle tones of the scallop. And then, suddenly, the crunch of the turnip is welcome.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

I like to benchmark my restaurant experience on whether I would bring my family back and can confidently say – La Dame De Pic is a gastronomic experience that I am excited to share with my loved ones in the future.

The menu is not, as you might expect, a love letter to French cuisine alone, but rather an ode to European food in general, ripe with elements of local culture, and threaded together with flavour notes from an international bank of inspiration.

Getting lost on foot in the tangle of narrow lanes and heritage coral-hewn buildings of Al Fahidi Historical District is a wonderful pursuit for those keen to experience the other side of Dubai’s hyper modernity. But it’s not always ideal in the heat. Hidden amongst the sand-coloured structures is a collection of cafes, museums, art galleries, and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Culture of Understanding (SMCCU) – where visitors and expats get the opportunity to learn and truly understand local culture, dress and customs. It’s from this Centre where you can also hop aboard a culture tour with a difference.

Heritage Express has teamed up with the SMCCU to offer visitors and residents the chance to take in Dubai’s wider cultural attractions while onboard a charming – and fully air-conditioned – trolley tour.

Putting a spin on the ‘immersive art’, Sergey Markofken will create a masterpiece live using the spinning canvas technique with colourful splashes of paint, all accompanied by music.

orld Art Dubai, the world’s largest contemporary retail art fair is back this month.

Running from May 2 to 5, the 10th edition of this four-day art festival will host over 4,000 artwork pieces from 400 galleries and solo artists from across the world. Expect 12 pavilions dedicated to countries and regions, including Japan, India, China, Turkey, Iran, America, Asia, Russia, UAE, Europe, the UK and Arabia.

What is contemporary art? In short, contemporary art refers to art created by artists living today. The works of art is usually the artist’s ‘response’ to the complex issues that shape our diverse, global, and rapidly changing world. As such, this means that the creativity showcased will be an eclectic melting pot of artistic style.

A LITTLE BIT OF TOM

Oh yeah, there’s loads of people I’d love to work with. Kendrick Lamar is up there for me, I’m a big fan. I’d love to work with Elton John. I’d love to work with Dua Lipa, she’s a proper pop star. Miley Cyrus, I’d love to work with her. And there’s a guy called Teezo Touchdown as well, who’s really, really cool. So I’d love to work with him.

What three songs are you listening to on repeat right now?

British singer-songwriter Tom Grennan is headed to Dubai for his debut performance at The Agenda on May 24. Ahead of the show, he spoke to What’s On about music, dream collabs, and his plans for his first visit to Dubai…

We know you had a budding career in football before you ended up in music. How did you end up getting into performing?

Yes, I played football when I was younger. Music wasn’t a thing for me until I was 17 or 18. Although my mum always said I belonged on a stage. Then I went to uni to train to be an actor, and it was while I was there that I picked up a guitar and started to write songs. And luckily enough, I was in the right place at the right time, and it’s been a whilwind since then.

You were training to be an actor when you fell into music, is that something you’d like to pick up again?

Definitely. I believe that acting will be a big part of my story. I feel like in the next year, I’ll try and get myself into into the eyes of some agents and see what happens.

You’ve got an action-packed 2024 coming up, is there anywhere that’s still on your bucket list?

I’d love to go to South America. I’m actually really excited to come to Dubai though. I’ve never been to Dubai – but my girlfriend works out there a lot and she says I’ll love it. So I’m looking forward to meeting my fans there. I didn’t even know that I had fans in Dubai.

What are you looking forward to experiencing in Dubai?

I’m going to fly out a few days before the gig, eat some good food, play some golf, and just chill out. And hopefully it won’t be too hot to go to the desert! Oh, I’d love to do that. I need to do that. Dune buggying around the desert? No problemo.

I’ve just finished my new record in America, and the music is on another level to be honest. I just want to put records out there and see what happens. I really really want to have another hit this year, so to get that would be great. Then I’m hoping to just have fun. I always say I love what I do, and I’ve never not stopped loving it. So yeah, just keep smiling and keep enjoying it.

Hans Zimmer returns to Dubai

One of cinema’s ‘all-time top scorers’, Hans Zimmer began his big screen composing career in the 1980s. After collaborating with other movie music icons (and writing the theme tune to UK quiz show, Going for Gold) his big solo break came when he penned the score to the seminal, multi-Oscar winning hit, Rain Man (1988).

In the four decades between then and now, Zimmer has now composed music for more than 150 films including stirring accompaniments to Interstellar, Inception, Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean and recently, the highly innovative and hanting soundtracks of both installments of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune - adaptation.

As captivating as his music is when watching the movie, nothing prepared Dubai for his live performance at the Coca-Cola Arena in January 2023.

The entire production of the three-hour long concert was exceptional to the point

that – more than a year later – eyes still sparkle during discussions.

To say it was well-received is an understatement, and the addition of a second date last year only cemented how well-loved Zimmer’s music is across all cultures.

Those who missed it in 2023 are in luck, because the multiple Academy Awardwinning composer announced his return to Dubai to grace the stage of the City Walk performance centre once again this year on May 31.

And Zimmer fever has done it again as seats to the show sold out, which resulted in the venue adding a second date on June 1.

Performing alongside Zimmer, who turns in staggering performances on a number of different instruments himself, will be an army of world-renowned musicians. Highlights include Tina Guao on the cello, Pedro Eustache on the winds, and many of the vocal artists from the original soundtracks.

Work has begun on the world’s first “healthy living island”

When it comes to holistic health, there are few names that resound with quite the same healing vibrations as SHA Wellness Clinic. Their integrated approach to living well earned them more than 100 international awards last year, including the title of ‘World’s Best Clinic’ at the World Spa Awards.

The foundations of this wellness atoll have already been mapped out, and now the churning wheels of construction have begun erecting the more than 100 residential and leisure structures that will stripe the island.

SHA’s hope is that they are able to manufacture a Blue Zone, which will be known as SHA Residences Emirates.

A ‘Blue Zone’ is a geographical pocket –often a small village or an island – where the residents tend to live much longer than the average human. FF45 TRAINING: EMBRACING THE F WORD

unctional. That’s the ‘F word’ I was talking about. Although if the title had you thinking about a different set of syllables, that was likely the word I was muttering under my breath during a set of burpees in my first class. It was, as most worthwhile transformative experiences tend to be, a trial by fire. And I loved it.

I’m getting ahead of myself though, let me introduce you to F45 Training: the cult fitness brand from Down Under, with a Chief Brand O cer post held by Hollywood A-Lister Mark Wahlberg. Each class is 45 minutes, and combines a mixture of HIIT, functional training, resistance workouts and cardio circuits. They’re designed to burn fat, build muscle, improve functional form, and torch up to 1,000 calories.

There are currently thousands of these boutique F45 fitness studios across the world, with a sizeable footprint right here in the UAE (including the Marina, Motor City, Meydan, Town Square, Mirdif and Downtown). I’d heard independent claims that they achieve impressive results over

a short period of time. And whilst I know that there are no shortcuts in fitness, there are crash courses – so I downloaded the app and took advantage of their one week for Dhs199 intro deal at the Palm Jumeirah branch. A day later I’m standing outside the glass frontage for the 7am class, apprehensively nursing a can of preworkout. Ashley, the warm and professional studio manager, ushers me in.

New recruits have to get on a futuristic looking set of scales, a rite of passage that analyses your BMI alongside your weight and some other metrics that make for sober reading. Then it’s into the warm-up – stretches and a bit of light cardio, “this is fine” I remember thinking to myself, “I can do this” which in retrospect was more proactive gaslighting than rea rming mantra. Today’s session is ‘Titans’, a tour of resistance focused circuits – targeting both the lower and upper body. 45 seconds on, then a break of 20 seconds. I’d envisaged 70s drill sergeants, but the trainers are all incredibly encouraging, knowledgeable

and generous with their time. I’ve been doing a bit of running over the past year, and though I wouldn’t class myself as an athlete – I would say I’m reasonably cardio fit. What F45 demonstrated, immediately, is how few of my muscles I’d actually been testing until now. After the session, it took a few days before I could walk downstairs without looking like a meme. It’s brutal, humbling at times, intense and challenging. But I’ll bring you back to what I said in the opening paragraph: “I love it”. I’m now several weeks in, but I loved it from the very first class. The real F word here, it turns out, is Forever. The world of alternative wellness is pushing the boundaries, on every front. Not just in the form of therapy, but also the elements incorporated, the techniques utilised, the science science-d. OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: Kalba

Nestled along the eastern coast close to Fujairah and approximately 10-minutes away from the Oman border, Sharjah’s Kalba is one exclave you shouldn’t bypass

Hanging Gardens

Located a few metres past the Kalba tunnel, Hanging Gardens is Kalba’s latest attraction. Home to more than 100,000 trees and flower blooms, its most striking feature is the waterfall. You can get your photographs at the base, or walk up the hiking trail for closer views (at different angles) and a good leg workout.

Hanging Gardens is also home to a running track, mini skatepark, play areas and two restaurants. There’s also an excursion train complete with train stations running along the base.

Similar to Hanging Gardens, Al Hefaiyah Lake will make you wonder if you are still in the UAE. Nestled in the Kalba mountains this picturesque water reservoir is about five minutes from the Hanging Gardens, past Al Hiyar Tunnel.

Here, visitors can hop onto boats and take a tour of the lake, hike the mountain trails that vary in length and difficulty, and chill out with little ones in the play areas. It is also home to Al Hefaiyah Mosque, which features a women’s prayer hall, an outdoor courtyard and an Islamic library.

All that exploring can be hungry work, so make a pit-stop at the Al Hefaiyah Rest House, which comes with lovely views of the lake and Kalba’s mountains.

Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre

This ecotourism project in Kalba is located a few minutes away from Kingfisher Retreat by Sharjah Collection and offers visitors a tour of the oldest mangrove forest in the emirates.

Inside, you can birdwatch and spot rare breeds such as the Arabian Collared Kingfisher, and marine life like crabs, green turtles and other fish and microorganisms. Expect to walk for approximately two hours (pace dependant), so comfy shoes are a must. Maps around the grounds guide you as you make your way around so you don’t miss something important.

Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Center

Located at the base of the Hajar Mountains a little outside Kalba city lies the Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Center. As the name suggests, the centre focuses on the conservation and celebration of the region’s mountain habitats. Inside, visitors can marvel at the vast range of the flora and fauna of the mountains. Expect to see cheetahs, Arabian Tahr, Arabian Rock Hyrax, Arabian Wolf, deers, hyenas, and more. Khor Kalba Fort

For those seeking a dose of heritage, a visit to Khor Kalba Fort is a must. Dating back approximately to 1745, this fort displays various artefacts and findings through excavations in the area. Spanning ceramics to stone, metal tools and more, there is a treasure trove of items within its four unequal walls. Take a close look at some of them as some are marked with important symbols from previous civilisations.

Located opposite the Khor Kalba Fort is Bait Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamad al Qassimi, which exhibits the belongings of the Kalba royal family. The bait

(translated to house in English) reflects the authentic Emirati architectural style and was the residence of Sheikh Saeed and his family. It is one of the most beautiful heritage houses in the UAE, which makes it a spot not to skip. News that construction on the Kalba Waterfront was 100 per cent complete was announced in 2022, but we are still awaiting its official opening. If you’re the type that likes to hit the gym and/or spa hard on holiday, this could be the stay for you...

LOCATION

Taking up residence inside the engineering marvel that is the One Za’abeel building, SIRO has managed to carve its own distinct space, jump-squatting-up from its 30th-floor lobby. It’s a Strava pin that places the hotel alongside the sawtoothed towerscape of Downtown Dubai, DIFC and offers elevated vistas that take in The Dubai Frame and Za’abeel Parks.

LOOK AND FEEL

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a hotel that has proudly declared itself a space of fitness and recovery – SIRO’s design orbits around core themes of zen and balance. There’s a sense of Scandinavian serenity throughout the communal and living areas, with soothing ergonomic design touches, zero clutter minimalism and muted organic tones. SIRO subliminally communicates the idea of wellness and clean living so effectively, you honestly feel a few pounds lighter and pretty much purged of cortisol, within moments of arriving. But these calming Yins hide rooms with fiery Yangs. The Experience Box, for example – where you can take HIIT and ‘Sculpt’ classes –is a choreographed thunderstorm of LED lighting.

ROOMS

The rooms have been designed to continue this wellness focus, with amenities and features that deliberately contribute to a sound body, sound mind, and sound sleep. We stayed in a Recovery Suite (there are Fitness Suites available for those that need a quick palate cleansing treadmill sesh in between the group cardio workouts) which comes with a private treatment room, special recovery bath, Swedish ladder and a bedroom with soporific sleep-enhancing features. It’s all incredibly luxurious but in a healthy, thoroughly unostentatious, SIRO way.

FACILITIES

Split between the twin paths of Fitness and Recovery, the facilities at SIRO mean you really can have your cake, eat it, and then burn off the associated calories. Train like a professional sports star taking one of those off-season Dubai breaks, with The Fitness Lab. It operates across a gym and several separate studios, offering up to 50 weekly elite-athlete-conceived classes in HIIT, pilates, cycling and other sweat-baiting activities. On the flip side, The Recovery

Lab is part premium spa – part yoga shala, with treatment rooms that offer technologically enhanced rejuvenation techniques, coldplunges, massages, dry-needling, assisted stretching, compression therapy and skin HIIT.

FOOD AND DRINK

SIRO’s own contribution to the edible experience is understandably, holistically minded with a nutritionist on hand to guide you towards making good choices; a Refuel juice bar; curated modular meals; and the outstanding, French-cuisine-focused all-day diner, Aelia. But there’s more. Because the hotel is situated in the One Za’abeel building – guests are just footsteps away from the gastronomic wonderland that is, The Link – with restaurants backed by a constellation of Michelin-recognised talent. So as with everything at SIRO, there are choices – you can take the road paved with tofu and kale, or the naughtier, arguably tastier one of butter and quail.

The standard room and suite packages usually come with set group fitness classes included. The treatment sessions are often chargeable extras, although there’ll soon be periodical offers with more wellness inclusions. The Recovery suite prices start at around Dhs3,400 (plus taxes), but there are lead-in options from Dhs1,200 which also include access to One Za’abeel’s Tapasake pool.
