LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

It’s hard to believe but for me summer seems like it’s just getting going. Usually it felt like summer to me even before June of any particular year. This year summer officially began on June 20th. So I’m saying I was about a month ahead with what I “felt” was summer. No, I’m not talking about anything like climate change or that stuff in any way, shape or form. I’m just talking about how it felt to me this year. In a state of mind sort of way. Often, by the time June flipped up on the calendar I was already deeply immersed in all things motorcycle and in the groove. The winter doldrums would be long gone. The motorcycle shows a happy memory. My motorcycles serviced and at the ready. Travel plans made and laid. And that’s how it was this year too. However, this year there just seemed to be an ongoing disturbance in the cosmic forces. I just wasn’t in the groove and I knew it. I could feel it in my gut. Even worse, nothing seemed to relieve this. It really wasn’t any feeling of gloom or doom either. Just that vague feeling like you’re not really connected. Like your progress bar is stuck and not loading. Nothing I did seemed to relieve it either. So I concentrated on the mundane instead. I worked on cleaning and improving my shop. That helped some. I made sure the basic yard work was caught up. That helped. The wife and I thoroughly washed and cleaned the car by hand ourselves. For some reason that helped too, though I really don’t care that much about cars anymore. I mean it’s nice to have it clean but not the same kind of nice as when I clean a motorcycle. Yeah, some of you get that and some don’t. Hey, I said I felt a bit disconnected. WWW.MOTORCYCLETIMES.COM

All in all, we were having a good time, a good year so far despite some obstacles. It just felt to me like some thing was still missing, like a part of an equation was missing and so it could not be solved. Then this month I noticed the tags were going to run out on my touring bike. I gave it the once over on lights and brakes and etc. It would pass no problem, I had already fully serviced it during the winter so it was ready in that regard too. So one day I hopped on it and rode over to the DMV and got my new sticker. Big deal I thought. Just like a hundred other times. It was just a ride to the DMV. But I didn’t know what was in store for me. I pulled out of the DMV and what had been a clear sky with full sunlight was suddenly overcast with threatening grey clouds that had a black tinge on the bottom. I thought “Oh well, I’ve been rained on before” and set my course for the longer way home. Part of that ride is on the Route 1 Freeway that goes to beaches here in Delaware. It wasn’t a weekend, so not much traffic. I would only be on it for about 10 miles but I was looking forward to the nice smooth cruise. The back roads from my exit would be rough because so many of the backroads here need repair but Delaware’s Billion Dollar budget surplus has already been spent on other things before it’s even been authorized. Enough of that, it’s politics as usual no matter where you live. About 1/2 way home I found myself grinning inside my helmet. I didn’t even have any music on. I was a virtually deserted two lane side road doing 50 mph and the temperature and the breeze and the smells and the motor purring and the road rolling under my wheels just all combined into a sweet spot and I suddenly felt as one with the cosmic universe again. Can the secret to a happy life be that simple? Yes. 4 Yes it can. It’s all in the wrist.
