2024 Australian Superbike Championship: Round 6 - One Raceway

Page 1

The reopening of One Raceway after a suite of upgrades is a huge shot in the arm for motorsport in Australia, and to have Red Bull Ampol Racing join us at the ASBK Championship round is going to make for a spectacular event.

The admiration across the Supercars and Superbike paddocks between drivers, riders and teams is huge, and we’re going to see that first-hand One Raceway with plenty of fun on-and-off-track activities. And the Feeney family has a rich connection to Superbike racing in Australia via Broc’s dad, Paul, so this event is poignant in so many ways.

mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance is thrilled to take centre stage once again as the naming rights sponsor for the upcoming 2024 ASBK Championship season.

This sponsorship renewal signifies the deep trust and mutual respect we have cultivated over the years, highlighting our joint dedication to bolstering motorcycle sports and upholding our brand values within the exciting backdrop of the Australian Superbike Championship racing series.

WELCOME FROM MA

On behalf of the ASBK team, I’d like to thank Red Bull Ampol Racing for joining us at One Raceway to launch its assault on this year’s Bathurst 1000.

WHAT IS AN ASBK-SPEC SUPERBIKE?

The Australian Superbike Championship Alpinestars Superbike class features bikes that are not only fast, spectacular and sound amazing but are also easily accessible to the general public as they are very similar to those available for purchase off the showroom floor.

Engine capacities and minimum weights for ASBK machines are capped at 1000cc and 168kg for four-cylinder machines, and 1300cc and 172kg for two- and three-cylinder configurations. That said, it’s worth noting that Matt Walters’ 1100cc Aprilia RSV4 has also been homologated for the Alpinestars Superbike class in 2023.

While engine modifications for race versions are limited, Yamaha Racing Team manager, John Redding, says the engine is not a primary focus for performance gains in the Superbike class.

“To get a performance improvement of 10 per cent over the standard output is about as much as you can expect,” Redding said. “You can increase the compression ratio, fine-tune the degrees on the valve seats and adjust the cam timing for different tracks, but that’s about it.

“One of the advantages of keeping the engines relatively standard is they are cheap to maintain and last a while between rebuilds.”

With the engine and gearbox both being close to standard, teams have turned to other aspects of Superbikes to improve their performance.

“Suspension has been a major area of development on the race-spec bikes,” Redding said. “The suspension on a street bike is compromised for ride comfort, but on a racetrack comfort isn’t a factor – it’s all about optimising the handling and the corner speeds that can be achieved.

“Compared to the street version of the bike, the race bike will have different shock absorbers and fork internals, providing a much more adjustable setup.”

In recent years, significant innovation has taken place in the electronic systems of race bikes. These systems have been adapted to provide

functions such as fuelling, traction control, engine braking and antiwheelie control.

There’s little doubt that the electronics sphere has provided both the biggest challenge – and opportunity – to teams and riders.

“Electronics are one of the most important areas of development and something that has become a critical factor in determining the speed that can be achieved by different bikes,” Redding said. “There are significant advantages to be gained in having the best electronic set-up.”

The brakes on racing bikes are also upgraded, with items such as the master cylinder, brake lines, pads and discs all being replaced with race-specific items.

“In a race situation, maximum stopping power is a priority, but brake wear is much less of a consideration than it would be on a road bike, because components can be changed after every session,” Redding said.

According to Redding, the bikes competing in the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, are more similar to road bikes than those in other Superbike championships globally.

“The permitted modifications are much more limited here in Australia, which has the advantage of containing costs,” Redding said.

At Phillip Island’s round one this year, the 2024 ASBK-spec bikes demonstrated their impressive speed when compared to the international classes. For instance, Harrison Voight’s new Phillip Island lap record is 1:30.790, which isn’t far behind the WorldSBK benchmark of 1:28.564.

Not bad for a lightly modified road bike!

LAST TIME OUT: PHILLIP ISLAND

PHILLIP ISLAND REVIEW/ONE RACEWAY PREVIEW

Welcome to One Raceway as we enjoy a little slice of history this weekend at round six of the 2024 mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul (ASBK).

After a multi-million-dollar transformation to the venue, which includes new and improved turns, a complete resurface, safety upgrades and more spectator-friendly viewing, the ASBK Championship will return for the first time since 2022 – the first major championship in Australia to christen the upgraded facility.

And the relaunch should start all guns blazing, with expected increases in average speeds and additional passing opportunities.

Another unique feature that has been incorporated into the new design is the ability to race in both directions – one of the very few in the world – with this weekend’s action to be held in the traditional clockwise manner.

As well as the regular ASBK classes – Pirelli Superbike, Michelin Supersport, Race and Road Supersport 300, ShopYamaha R3 Cup and the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup – there will be more star attraction at One Raceway with Red Bull Ampol Racing driver Broc Feeney returning to his family’s hometown of Goulburn to feature in a demonstration display on Saturday, October 5.

Feeney will aim to set the fastest lap times in the 2022 Holden Commodore in which he claimed his first Supercars Championship victory as a rookie in the 2022 Adelaide 500.

Fans at One Raceway will also be treated to a parade lap of Broc in his 2024 Chevrolet Camaro alongside his father Paul, a former Superbike rider, who will return to two wheels for this special event.

PIRELLI SUPERBIKE

Leading the way in Pirelli Superbike is Josh Waters on the McMartin Racing Ducati, who has sat atop the points table since the opening round at Philip Island way back in February.

At the second visit to the Island last month, Waters finished with 2-2 results to increase his championship lead to 29pts over Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing Team).

The victors at the Island were two debutants: Waters’ teammate Harrison Voight in race one and Broc Pearson (DesmoSport Ducati) in race two, while Arthur Sissis (Stop and Seal Yamaha) and Anthony West (Addicted to Track Yamaha) claimed the third spots. It was Sissis’ first podium in the Superbike class.

LAST TIME OUT: PHILLIP ISLAND

There are many others to keep an eye on over the weekend. Another three-time champion, Glenn Allerton, who is soon to end his 10-year tenure with BMW to ride a Ducati in 2025, will be competing close to his home in south-west Sydney and will have a bunch of family and friends in attendance to cheer him on.

Also not giving up the title without a fight will be the Yamaha Racing Team duo of Jones and the recently married Cru Halliday.

Then there are the two young hard chargers of the Penrite Racing Yamaha duo of Max Stauffer and teenager Cameron Dunker. Dunker was a revelation in the sodden conditions of the second leg at Phillip Island to finish fifth after retiring from the first race with a mechanical gremlin. As for Stauffer, he was fifth but crashed out in the second leg suffering rib injuries but has had time to recover – and as we have witnessed in the past you can’t keep a Stauffer down.

It is mathematically possible that Waters could wrap up the title with a round to spare if he leaves One Raceway with at least a 51pt buffer to second place,

Whichever way it goes, the Mildura missile is in the pilot’s seat to be the first rider to claim four Australian Superbike Championships.

Waters is on 220.5pts, from Jones (191.5), Pearson (176.5), Halliday (173) and Stauffer *144).

Unfortunately, one of Goulburn’s favourite sons, threetime ASBK Superbike champion Troy Herfoss, won’t be on track this weekend.

Herfoss has remained in America for promotional duties with his Indian Motorcycles team after clinching the King of the Baggers title last weekend in New Jersey.

MICHELIN SUPERSPORT

The battle for glory in the Michelin Supersport Championship is a bubbling cauldron but come race day the action may be volcanic and put Mt Vesuvius to shame as tensions are taut after Phillip Island last month.

The lead for Sydney-sider Jonathan “JJ” Nahlous (Yamaha) has shrunk to just 20pts after a dramatic DNF in the second leg at Phillip Island when he crashed soon after the start, with chief rival Archie McDonald (Yamaha) also taken out as collateral damage.

Earlier, Nahlous had won race one by over four seconds from McDonald with Olly Simpson (Yamaha) – who claimed his first pole position of the year -- less than a second behind McDonald in third.

With Nahlous and McDonald back in the pits, Simpson won race two from Jake Farnsworth by half a wheel, with Tom Bramich (Yamaha) claiming third from Jack Mahaffy (Yamaha) by a similar distance.

LAST TIME OUTCONT.

Nahlous’ championship lead is now over Simpson (201 to 181), with Farnsworth on 169 ahead of Bramich (166) and McDonald (164).

Other to look out for at One Raceway include Jack Favelle (Yamaha), Hayden Nelson (Kawasaki), Glenn Nelson (Yamaha) and Marcus Hamod (Honda).

Meanwhile, another Goulburn hard-charger, two-time Australian Supersport champion Tom Toparis, will be trackside at One Raceway while still recovering from the injuries sustained at Morgan Park’s round back in early July.

RACE AND ROAD SUPERSPORT 300/ SHOPYAMAHA R3 CUP

On aspect of the Race and Road Supersport 300 class never changes: the battles for the lead and glory will not let up until the final comer at the final race of the year.

With three races at One Raceway, as well as an extra three races for the Yamaha-only riders in the ShopYamahaR3 Cup, there will be numerous holdyour-breath moments as the youngsters comes to grip with the new layout.

Josh Newman on his Kawasaki still leads the Supersport 300 lead, which he extended back out to 19pts at Phillip Island over Valentino Knezovic (Yamaha), with Harrison Watts (Kawasaki) third overall just 5pts adrift.

At the previous round, it was Wil Nassif (Yamaha) who came of age when he won the round with his first pole position, his first race win and a pair of third places in the other hotly contested races.

Race one had seven riders split by just 0.604secs at the finish line, with Newman edging out Calvin Moylan with Nassif third.

In race two, 10 riders were split by 0.775secs – about a blink of the eye – as Scott Nicholson won from Knezovic and Nassif.

Standby for more of the same, and this time with the return of hard-charging New Zealander Jesse Stroud (Yamaha) who sat out the previous round.

In the R3 Cup, Knezovic (70pts) leads from Stroud (65) and Jordan Simpson (Yamaha, 51) after its one and only round at Morgan Park.

BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP

One Raceway is the start of a big few weeks for the bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup, which will be the only support class at the Etihad Airways Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island from October 18-20.

After three of five rounds, Hunter Corney leads the way on 205pts from Ethan Johnson (163), Nikolas Lazos (153), Hunter Charlett (132) and Elijah Andrew (132).

The diminutive Yamaha YZF-R15 bikes should enjoy the tighter confines of the One Raceway layout, with the junior academy riders set to put on a show across their three races.

Ampol Racing:

“There’s going to be some really cool things happening on the day. I’ll be setting lap times in both directions of the track, we’ll have our Bathurst 1000 car on display for fans to see, I’ll host a signing session and will also do a demonstration lap with my dad who has so much history with the Australian Superbike Championship.

Moreover, the fastest qualifier at each round will receive a $500 voucher to spend at ShopYamaha and, if a YZF-R3 rider wins both the ShopYamaha R3 Cup and the Race and Road Supersport 300 Championship, they will receive a $2000 bonus.

ASBK and Yamaha Australia introduced the one-make Yamaha R3 Cup in 2016 as a cost-effective entry-level package into national-level circuit racing. Since then, many of the established names in ASBK have honed their skills and

race craft in the pressure-cooker class where victories are always well-earned – and often not decided until the final run to the finish line!

Such has been the success of the initiative, Yamaha Moto Co. has launched the same concept across the globe, providing a perfect pathway to international competition for aspiring young talent.

BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP

BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP

Since its inception in 2019, the FIM Oceania and Dorna Sports-supported bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup (OJC) has provided a nurturing environment for young riders to experience road racing at a national level, learn, improve, and showcase their talents.

The OJC has become a firmly established stepping-stone to the international racing arena and is recognised as a Road to MotoGP category. The most outstanding OJC riders have a clear pathway to progress to other international categories such as the Asia Talent Cup and Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup.

Even though it is only in its fifth season, OJC has already earned a formidable reputation as a breeding ground for future stars. And in 2024, history will be made when Jacob Roulstone, who was an OJC competitor in 2019, becomes a world championship grand prix rider in the Moto3 class. And in more exciting news, the OJC will be formally recognised in 2024 with Australian championship status, which is a nod to its powerful status as a major junior pathways program.

The 2023 OJC season has seen 11 riders debuting, joining the nine incumbents from 2022. Furthermore, OJC graduates and current riders have also competed internationally in 2023.

The OJC formula is simple but effective: competitors aged from 11 up to under 16 (as of January 1, 2023) compete against each other on identical Yamaha YZF-R15 raceprepped motorcycles, equipped with control Dunlop tyres, Öhlins suspension, Yamalube and DID chains.
