REVIEW

2014 In Review

I

t’s a new year, 2014 in the rear-view mirror and 2015’s staring right at you through the windshield. Looking back, 2014 was a particularly good year for the car enthusiast, especially the environmental kind. 2014 ushered in a new dawn with an unrivaled level of commercial production of “green” cars. The playing field just got bigger with more EV’s and hybrids being developed.

2015 NEW

The fuel driven cars are greener too! Major car makers such as Toyota, Jeep and BMW developed and/or enhanced their Eco-design engines. With Eco-mode enabled, the engines will be “greener” in their operation. Also, self drive cars made a huge leap towards being a commercially viable reality. Google showed its prototype off to the world and went on to promise full scale commercial production by the end of the decade. In case your wondering, the self drive cars are exactly what they sound like—cars capable of “driving themselves”. You would be no more than a passenger. We in Uganda shouldn’t be too excited though seeing as its operation is heavily dependent on navigation systems and on-point traffic systems—none of which are well established in Uganda.

MODELS

Back home, there’s one car that had a blast all year—Uganda’s favorite son, Noah. If the URA figures are anything to go by, the Toyota Noah was the most bought car in 2014. Meanwhile as Ugandan roads fill up with pre 2005 car models, there is a host of 2015 models of all our favorite cars, many of them premiered at the New York and Tokyo motor shows late last year. Go ahead, flip through, at the very least, take a look at them.

ith its standard 4-cylinder engine, reviewers say the Toyota Corolla has adequate power for everyday driving, but its acceleration isn’t particularly brisk. A sixspeed manual transmission is standard and an automatic is optional. At up to an EPA-estimated 29/38 mpg city/highway, the 2015 Corolla gets good fuel economy for the class. Corolla LE Eco models offer even better fuel economy with up to 30/42 mpg. Most test drivers agree that dull steering and excessive body roll through turns mean the Corolla isn’t fun to drive. However, they praise the Corolla’s comfortable ride. Test drivers say it’s dashboard is constructed with upscale materials, though a few critics find fault with some hard plastic surfaces. The Corolla’s front seats are comfortable, and there is an impressive amount of rear-seat legroom, according to test drivers. The Corolla’s trunk space is about average, though reviewers say its large opening makes it easy to load and unload cargo. Bluetooth and a USB port are standard. Optional features include a rear-view camera, proximity key, navigation and Toyota’s Entune infotainment system with a 6.1-inch touch screen. 6

GLOBAL TRENDS

Electric CARS 101 Electric cars are probably something you’ve heard more and more about in recent times. There’s no denying that they are a huge part of the future of the motor world—with the world going green and all. MotorHub is playing its part in the Global shift towards greener motoring by publishing this article…your part, to brace yourself as we introduce you to electric cars.

E

lectric cars are automobiles propelled by one or more electric motors using electrical energy stored in batteries or another energy storage device. Many believe electric cars are a recent development yet as a matter of fact, they first hit the streets as early as the 1880’s. Why did they fall off the face of the earth, well, they were overwhelmingly inefficient in terms of energy conversion and energy storage and/or range. In 2008 however, a resurgence in EV manufacture occurred due to advances in batteries and power management, increasing oil prices, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and concerns of dependence on the Middle Eastern oil producing countries by Western governments. As of November 2014, the number of mass production highway-capable all-electric passenger cars and utility vans in the market is limited to over 30 models, mainly in the US, Japan, Western European countries and China. The world’s top selling highway-capable electric car ever is the Nissan Leaf, released in December 2010, with global sales of over 150,000 units by November 2014. EV manufacturing is a growing trend in the moMotorHub Magazine

tor world which would explain why all major car makers have joined in; BMW i3, Nissan Leaf, Tesla, Toyota RAV4 EV, Ford Focus electric… Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe The electric car that sets the performance standards for all the rest would have to be the Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe--offering 740 hp, all-wheel drive and a body that looks like liquid metal. Mercedes went to extensive lengths to make sure the electron powered SLS AMG lost nothing on its gas powered double. Power comes from a levee of Lithium ion batteries developed with the help of Mercedes Formula 1 engineers, packed into the tunnel where the driveliness and transmission used to reside. Using 2 electric motors on each axle, Mercedes programmed the SLS AMG so that each wheel can be spun and braked independently which makes for impressive handling. With 60kWh of battery storage (the same as the mid-range version of the Tesla Model S), Mercedes says the SLS AMG Electric drive can travel about 155 miles on charge. Its price tag, a staggering $536,804. To put this in perspective, $536,804 can buy 9

536,804 can buy you an Audi Q7, Land cruiser 2015 and two Range Rovers for the kids, with enough money left over for 420,000 liters of fuel. You would have to burn through 40 liters every day for 30 years to get through that amount. So, with such a ridiculous price tag, no sane (read “humbly rich”) person would buy this. …Options? Not all hope is lost though, a company, Tesla Motors (named after physicist Nikola Tesla) in 2009 designed the Tesla Model S, a much more affordable luxury sedan. This is by far the most practical Electric Vehicle available on the market today. Pricing starts as low as $50,000 with a range of 320km per charge, the best part, it can charge to 80% in under 30 minutes. February 2015 Issue

T

he 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport has a lavish interior, a smooth ride, powerful engines and great off-road capabilities, reviewers agree. The base Land Rover Range Rover Sport comes with a supercharged V6 engine that most reviewers say offers a good amount of power. However, some critics wish it were a bit more powerful. There are two optional supercharged V8 engines and automotive writers agree that they put down even more robust power for thrilling acceleration. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, and automotive journalists point out that it shifts smoothly. With 17/22 mpg city/highway, the base 2015 Range Rover Sport earns lower fuel economy estimates than most rivals. Test drivers say the Range Rover Sport has a comfortable ride, sharp steering and exceptionally athletic handling. Reviewers note that the 2015 Range Rover Sport also excels off-road, with the ability to take on most kinds of terrain with ease. Critics report that the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport’s cabin has distinguished styling and high-end materials, including real wood and firstrate leather. They say the Range Rover Sport’s first- and second-row seats are exceptionally comfortable and roomy, and that the driver’s seat offers a good view of the road. However, critics note that the optional third row can only comfortably accommodate children, which is common for a threerow SUV. The 2015 Range Rover Sport comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, satellite radio, an eight-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, an 8-inch touch screen, navigation and a USB port. Options include tri- or quad-zone automatic climate control, a surround camera system that provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle to aid with parking maneuvers, a 19-speaker Meridian surround-sound audio system, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. Although some automotive writers say the Land Rover Range Rover Sport’s infotainment system is straightforward, others complain that it isn’t as easy to use as those in some rivals. With 62.2 cubic feet of overall room, the 2015 Range Rover Sport has limited cargo space for the class. The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport ranks 1 out of 17 Luxury Mid-size SUVs. This ranking is based on analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, as well as reliability and safety data.

he 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee distinguishes itself with a first-class interior, impressive off-roading capability and a well-mannered driving experience, reviewers say.

Test drivers agree that the 2015 Grand Cherokee’s base V6 engine produces plenty of power. They say the available diesel engine gives the Grand Cherokee strong acceleration off the line, and the two available V8 engines, especially the larger V8 in the high-performance SRT model, generate very impressive acceleration. Reviewers remark that the standard eight-speed automatic transmission is responsive and shifts smoothly. The base 2015 Grand Cherokee’s 17/25 mpg city/highway fuel economy rating is a little lower than that of some comparable two-row mid-size SUVs, but the diesel model’s rating of 22/30 mpg is very good for the class. The Grand Cherokee has outstanding off-road capability, reviewers say. They also write that it is very well-mannered on pavement, with a compliant ride and controlled handling. According to auto journalists, the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s cabin is appointed with soft-touch materials and handsome wood trim, and some remark that even on the base trim, the cabin feels upscale. Reviewers agree that the front seats are comfortable and supportive and that the back seat has plenty of head- and legroom. Test drivers are pleased with the Grand Cherokee’s cargo space, and some add that there are lots of storage areas for smaller items throughout the cabin. The Grand Cherokee comes standard with a Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touch screen, Bluetooth and a USB port. A rear-view camera, a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, navigation, adaptive cruise control, a rear-seat entertainment system and Uconnect with an 8.4inch touch screen are available. GARAGE

A couple of quick fixes you can apply all on your own

T

he biggest hurdle in convincing someone they can handle car repair is the fear factor, but here’s the thing; It’s actually pretty hard to permanently screw up a car. You might break something temporarily, or a fix might not work in the long run, but you probably won’t set yourself or your car on fire just because you banged too hard on a valve. Cars are resilient machines and regardless of the year or make, there are plenty of repairs even the clumsiest and technically challenged can handle provided they have the confidence to push through. Problem: Battery has gone dead ix: First check the battery charge with a tester. You have 2 options- either go and buy a charger and hook it up to the mains or try a jump start. For the latter, get some jump leads and find a friend with a ‘donor’ car. Hook up the jump cables to the battery (these are

usually color coded), positive to positive, negative to a metal earth point on the car (not the battery!). Start the donor car. After a minute, start the other car and leave it running to charge. Remove the cables and off you go. Problem: Spark plugs are faulty ix: Very easy, and takes about 10 minutes. Locate the spark plugs and take off the covers, then unscrew them. Clean off the general area a bit, and then put in some new ones. Put the covers back on. Start your engine to test that they’re working correctly.

Problem: Oil levels are too low ix: This one is a pretty easy fix that anyone can do. Locate your dipstick and do the usual release, wipe, dip and release to gauge just how low your levels are. Go to a fueling station and buy the proper motor oil for your engine. Locate the oil filler cap and pour it in. Start your engine to get the oil moving

around the system and that’s that. Problem: Tire is flat ix: Everyone hates flat tires. You have two options – call a tow service and have them come and help out, or roll up your sleeves and change it manually. First, loosen the lug nuts with the tire on the ground. Do NOT remove completely. Jack up the car using the car’s jacking points and finish unscrewing the wheel lugs. Remove the old wheel and put the new wheel on. Tighten the lugs by hand until tight Lower the car down slowly, and torque the lugs to recommended specs using a torque wrench. Now that’s a successful pit stop. ottom line is, if you feel confident enough, it’s possible to fix a range of different car problems quickly and easily at home. ACCESSORISE

PORTABLE JUMP-STARTER! Does such a thing even exist?

I

f you’re like me, and for some reason you spend more time with your bonnet open than you do driving your car, then you’ll be smiling ridiculously by the end of this article. I jump-start my car as often as the average car owner has theirs washed—true story. For a while, this sad fact meant I couldn’t dare to drive out of the city or suburbs; the only places I was sure I’d be surrounded by a sea of cars under whose bonnets lay the batteries that would jump mine when the need inevitably arose; which meant no more convenient night shopping at Nakumatt, no more road trips… grandma, now you know the real reason I couldn’t visit.

“Sometimes, I catch myself jump-starting for fun—because I can, offering stranded strangers a boost—because I can, shopping in another district—because I can.”

the USB Plug in jump starter, is a hand-held power bank capable of jump-starting your car and charging virtually any laptop or mobile device while at it. Fully charged, it is capable of about 20 jump starts depending on its make and model. It has a massive capacity of 13600mAH yet weighs a measly 455g and fits in any glove compartment (yes, even Vitz owners are covered). It has a lengthy life cycle of about 2000 full charges and a full charge takes about 3 hours. Within the package, you’ll find a manual, jumper cable (actual cables, not the re purposed wires in your trunk), laptop charger with 8 adapters for various brands and a bag. Now, this thing is the gift that keeps on giving, turns out it has a super bright LED lighting system and an SOS distress signal too.

Amazon.com would be my recommendation; that means though, you’d have to consider the shipping charges. I can tell you, that in the one week since I picked my package up from the FedEx offices, I have covered a higher mileage than you have up until this point. Sometimes, I catch myself jump-starting for fun, not because my car wont start— because I can, offering stranded strangers a boost—because I can, shopping in another district, not because there are no malls near me—because I can. I warned you about the ridiculous smiles, join in on the fun, make your order today. I give it 100% everyday. I know the jump starter has me covered. Gotta go, off to see Grandma!

Not anymore, not since I discovy now, you’re definitely ered that I could own my very own amazed and thinking, okay, jump-starter. One could argue I want this. And now to deal that it’s easier & cheaper for me to get a new battery, & they’d be with the elephant in the room, the right (maybe), but that’s not what price; this beaut will set you back between UGX 273,300 and UGX am here to talk about. 350,000 depending on the model. gile handling and a powerful turbocharged engine option make the 2015 Kia Sportage fun to drive, reviewers say, but they add that its small cargo hold and firm ride may limit its appeal. It’s base 4-cylinder engine produces enough power to please most drivers. Test drivers praise the Kia Sportage’s agile handling, which they say is sportier than that of many competitors. Some automotive writers think the Sportage has responsive steering and strong brakes. Despite lots of plastic materials, reviewers agree that it has a handsome cabin and impressive build quality. Some test drivers think the Sportage’s front seats are comfortable, while others say the seats are too thinly padded. Its rear seats don’t have much legroom and it has poor outward visibility in most directions. It comes standard with satellite radio, Bluetooth and a USB port. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, a UVO eServices infotainment system, a 7-inch touch-screen navigation system, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors. 21
