THE READERS Easier car purchasing! I am glad we finally have a magazine in Uganda focusing on motoring. I recently moved back to Uganda after 20 years in Manchester, UK. I have to say, the general mode of car purchase is disturbing; here it seems like you have to come up with a lump-sum to buy a car. That makes it rather hard to buy brand new cars and I see many of my friends over here have resorted to buying used cars. Is there any arrangement in the country that provides convenience similar to that abroad where having a steady job guarantees you the possibility to drive your dream car if you wish? Thomas B, Entebbe Editor: You’ll be glad to know that we have published an interview with the head of vehicle and asset financing at Stanbic bank Uganda in this issue.
Ugandan Motor-sport! Hello, I have been following Motorhub on social media; the rate of progress is impressive. However, if you could include some content on Ugandan motor-sport to complement your formula one coverage, that would be great. Alistair, Kampala Editor: Thank you for your appreciation. We do have plans of extending our coverage to Ugandan motor-sport during the year. Car bond price lists! Dear editor, I would like to buy my first car in the next few months, however, I don’t know the prices at the different bonds. I do think publishing periodic price lists from different bonds around Kampala could help people like me in decision making. Otherwise, I do enjoy
reading Motorhub whenever I am having my hair done. Hannah, Kampala
Editor: Thanks for the appreciation, Hannah. The team will compile a price list for you the readers in the next issues. Congratulations in advance on buying your new car.

y Toyota Raum or “Becky”, as I like to call her is the perfect companion. She’s there for me when I wake up, she makes sure I get to work and back home in one piece; surely what more could one need. There’s lots of reasons you should get one of these and I’m here to make the case for the Toyota Raum. With a tiny 1.5 litre engine, Becky provides top notch fuel consumption that can go as high as 14 km/L. Unlike a real life girlfriend, Becky’s pretty low main-

tenance; fuel her once and drive on for days. She’s easy to fill up too, with a 45L fuel tank, a full tank will only set you back about UGX 160,000. When it comes to visual appeal, Becky (not her little sister the 1996 model) is still up there, she’s got curves in all the right places, not too big, and not too small – she’s just right. So she’s perfect if you’re just starting out, it fits the profile just right. You can park Becky pretty much anywhere without worrying about the looks people’ll
give you as you emerge (unlike Vitz owners). Becky also has the amazing ability to morph & suit different needs – for a small family, she will do and for a bachelor(ette), she’s still small enough – confusing but true. Becky unlike your girlfriend, is easy and cheap to keep looking pretty and pimp if need be. Accessories and spare parts are readily available all over town at wallet friendly prices.

Find a flat, stable and safe place to change your tire. Apply the parking brake and put car into “Park” position. If you have a standard transmission, put your vehicle in 1 or R. Place a heavy object in front of the front and back tires. Place the car jack near the tire to be changed. Ensure that the jack is in contact with the metal portion of your car’s frame Raise the jack until it is supporting (but not lifting) the car. Check to make sure that the jack is perpendicular to the ground. Loosen the nuts by turning counterclockwise. By keeping the wheel on the ground when you first loosen the nuts, you’ll make sure that you’re turning the nuts instead of the wheel. Pump or crank the jack to lift the tire off the ground; high enough to remove the flat tire and replace it with a spare. Remove the nuts the rest of the way. Remove the tire. Place it under the vehicle so in the event of a jack failure the vehicle will fall on the old wheel, hopefully preventing injury. Place the spare tire on the hub, then put on the lug nuts. Using the wrench, tighten the nuts. To ensure the tire is balanced, don’t completely tighten the nuts one at a time. Lower the car without applying full weight on the tire. Tighten the nuts as much as possible. Lower the car fully and remove the jack. Finish tightening the nuts and replace the hubcap.

nissan NAVARA
issan thinks it’s cracked the elusive car-like pick-up formula with the new Navara. This has been achieved, it says, by calling on 80 years of pick-up truck building knowhow and combining that with experience gained more recently creating market-leading crossover SUVs like the Qashqai and Juke. Powered by Nissan’s 2.3-litre engine, developed specifically for commercial vehicles, the Nissan NP300 Navara is the most efficient and cleanest pickup, while also boasting one of the highest power ratings in the class at 188bhp. There are two power ratings, five trim levels, two body styles (king cab and double cab), and meaning that it has a broad reach to all sectors. For the first time, a chassis cab variant will also be offered. The interior of the new Nissan NP300 Navara is neutral but appeasing, with a mixture of black plastics and chrome accents. It’s a very spacious and functional cab, with all the buttons set out in an easy to follow format. Some say, the fabric seats of the lower specs are a lot more comfortable than the leather seats, which are very firm and harsh on the back. The seating position
is quite low, though, and combined with the high bonnet means visibility isn’t the best. The back of the king-cab features backwards-opening rear doors and fold-down seats. The base Visia spec is aimed at the fleets, and the modest feature list includes steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth telephone integration, a USB port and auxiliary socket for MP3 player, cruise control and speed limiter (only on double-cabs), three 12-v sockets, hill descent control and hill start assist. Nissan’s 2.3-litre engine, developed specifically for commercial vehicles, provides the power. There is a smooth, though sometimes hesitant, seven-speed automatic offered alongside the standard six-speed manual transmission. In terms of driving manners, the new double-cab Nissan NP300 Navara performs far better than any other vehicle that we’ve tested before. The unique coil suspension offers far superior comfort and refinement than any leaf spring set-up, dampening any inconsistences in the road and making it well-suited to the lifestyle sector. The king cab, however, still uses leafs, which means the bumps and potholes are a lot more noticeable, and means it’s a lot bouncier when unladen.
what others say… “The pickup market is rapidly transforming, with more and more trucks being used as a family vehicle. By making the ride more comfortable, making the interior and exterior more visually appealing and adding a host of safety and driver assist systems, the NP300 Navara is well positioned to meet the new-age demands of the market. Now we just have to wait for the rest of its competitors to reveal their hands.” – CAR Magazine “The 2015 Nissan Navara NP300 ST dual-cab automatic ute is the sort of truck that caters to both work and play. It’s entirely liveable as a daily driver despite its somewhat cumbersome steering, and it also ticks the boxes as a weekend warrior for the family.” – CarAdvice “Combining its recently acquired crossover SUV expertise and long-standing pick-up truck knowhow, Nissan has created a formidable product in the new Nissan Navara NP300. Refinement, comfort and interior quality are genuinely ‘carlike’, while the handling and performance come close, but the Navara hasn’t gone soft. Big payloads and towing capacities plus low running costs will keep hard-nosed business users happy.” - AutoExpress

espite the new creature comforts, Toyota says the Hilux is still as rugged as ever and ready to handle what customers throw at it. More than 16 million Hilux trucks have been sold since its introduction in 1968, so undoubtedly Toyota is doing something right. The all-new 2016 Hilux continues Toyota’s tradition of the high-riding, utilitarian pickup. The Hilux offers superb approach and departure angles thanks to its long wheelbase and short overhangs.
options ordered. The 2016 Hilux will come with four engine options; two turbodiesel and two naturally aspirated gasoline mills. Up first is the 2.8-liter turbodiesel that makes 174 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. For those wanting a smaller diesel, there is the 2.4-liter turbodiesel that makes 160 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Backing the engines is a pair of transmissions. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual transmission that also includes the world’s first, truck-based rev matching technology Toyota has branded the transmission the i-MT. Also available is a six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota says the powertrain combinations now offer better fuel economy and therefore greater driving range.
Sparking interest is the swanky infotainment screen with its haptic feedback buttons. Save for the CD/ DVD slot up top, it looks like a tablet PC. Below the main screen are the HVAC controls. They appear easy to use with two knobs for fan speed and temperature, with simple buttons for the main functions. Further below is a bank of switches that would fill up with
Underpinning the new Hilux is an all-new frame that features fully boxed rails and larger cross members. Engineers updated the suspension by upgrading the shock absorbers up front and enhancing the leaf spring setup out back. Toyota says this gives the Hilux greater abilities off road while making its on-road feel even better.

what others say… “This is the HiLux Toyota had to build. Anything less would have put it behind the game.” – CarsGuide “Toyota HiLux is a middle-of-the-pack contender. Of course, the HiLux will sell in huge numbers, and fair enough given the scope of Toyota’s network. But don’t think that the HiLux’s likely ‘most popular’ tag necessarily equates to ‘best’. “– CarAdvice

As much as the outside has improved, the interior is where the big changes have happened. The dashboard looks remotely related to the current Corolla with its thin, horizontal shape, though it isn’t a direct copy. Brushed aluminum trim brightens up the black cabin, as does unique stitching on the seat cushions. The steering wheel gets plenty of controls and the gauge cluster is easy to read and is free of clutter.
“Keeping in mind the HiLux’s enduring reliability and incredible re-sale value, the eighth-generation model looms as one of 2015’s big cars. For the first time in years, the HiLux is finally worthy of its sales success; a neatly packaged utility that delicately balances the needs of work and play. “– Drive.com “The Hilux is designed more for work than for driving pleasure or handling precision. It’s a big and bulky vehicle by passenger-car standars, although not as big as some direct competitors. One significant plus with the Hilux is its reliability, something that bodes well for those looking to use it in remote locations.” - WhichCar

Ford & Google ‘to partner on driverless cars’
S
earch giant Google and Ford are in advanced talks to collaborate on autonomous cars, it has emerged.Reuters and other news outlets are reporting that discussions have been underway for months and could result in the Blue Oval building driverless cars for Google. It’s not as easy as it looks manufacturing vehicles especially not for a company whose expertise lies in the digital space and which has little experience in building physical objects. Ford, by contast, has been doing it for more than a century and boasts plenty of factory capacity and a strong supplier network. Google has planned from the off to partner with existing car makers to realise its driverless ambitions. Ford CEO Mark Fields met Google founder Sergey Brin in California earlier in December 2015, it has emerged. Although both companies declined to comment on the talks, the reality is that the search giant is likely talking to most major car manufacturers. Don’t forget that former Blue Oval boss Alan Mulally is now a director at Google and a number of ex-Ford execs and engineers have been poached by the Moutain View-based digital specialist.

German giants buy Nokia Here
B
MW, Audi and Daimler (Mercedes) have successfully completed their €2.8 billion (£2 billion) joint purchase of Nokia’s Here mapping business. Following an earlier announcement in August, this confirms the acquisition has met with approval from all the relevant authorities. Nokia’s Here is an open-platform, cloud-enhanced navigation system, which already supplies map data for cars in North America and Europe. It uses a combination of ‘static’ data captured by cars fitted with high-resolution 3D-mapping technology and real-time information supplied by a network of connected devices – including but not limited to cars – in order to provide accurate, up-to-date detail. ‘The reason we have allied with Mercedes and Volkswagen [Audi] is because in autonomous driving, the map becomes fundamental. There are three mapping companies in the world: Google, Here and TomTom. We decided we wanted to own one as it’s fundamental to a lot of things. It’s a good idea to share it, it’s important to have an open platform [which Here will remain] and between the three German OEMs we’re selling 10 million cars a year. The realtime updating will have [better] density as an information source [with a greater scale of vehicles]. ‘Current mapping is accurate to just under one metre, but for autonomy it needs to be accurate to less than one centimetre. It needs updating extremely quickly, forms a fundamental part of driving the business forward, and a different business model.’

amborghini’s first 4x4 - loosely based on the Urus SUV concept car - will be the companys first turbocharged car when the highperformance crossover arrives in 2018. We are expecting a price tag around €170,000, or £120,000 in today›s money, making this the cheapest Lambo in the range.
HondaJet ready for Take-Off
President and chairman Stephan Winkelman let slip that the 4x4 would use a twin-turbo V8 in a visit to the UK. He cited low-down torque and offroad ability as influencing the decision to follow forced induction and claimed that the design would evolve considerably from the 2012 Urus.
Hyperloop transport: The future
B A
fter completing its first flight last year, the HondaJet has now received its type certification from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This means production can being in earnest ahead of delivery to actual customers. There are 25 in-build at the Honda Aircraft Company’s HQ in Greensboro, North Carolina right now. Aside from it being Honda’s first ever commercial aircraft, it is also claimed to be ‘the fastest, highest-flying, quietest and most fuel-efficient jet in it class’. It achieves these feats in typical
Honda fashion through innovative engineering. The HondaJet features ‘Over-The-Wing Engine Mounts’, which are said to ‘drastically’ improve performance and efficiency due to their reduced aerodynamic drag, while also minimising noise and allowing for class-leading passenger and baggage space. In other words, it’s a bit of a big deal. Powered by a pair of GE Honda HF120 turbofan jet engines, the HondaJet’s top speed is 420 knots, which is equivalent to 483mph. Some 3000 flight hours have gone into the certification process, with testing conducted at 70 locations around the USA.
ack in 2013, Tesla boss Elon Musk published a white paper proposing a radical new mass transit system that would see people and goods travel through tubes at speeds of up to 700mph. The concept would rival air transport as an energy efficient means of covering large distances in far less time than it would take in a car. Most thought he was mad. However, enough people took the Hyperloop plan seriously enough that at least two companies have sprung up with the competing ambition to turn the concept into reality. And one of these – Hyperloop Technologies – has just announced it plans to begin testing early next year. As Hyperloop Tech puts it, ‘Hyperloop is a transportation system in which a full-length tube is built between destinations, with a controlled environment inside the tube allowing people of cargo to travel at extremely fast speeds.’ ‘Controlled environment’ means low pressure and therefore reduced friction, which makes it far easier to move the capsules – known as ‘pods’ – inside the tube, in turn enabling them to reach immense speeds. A cheap way to buy expensive cars…Finally! Vehicle and asset financing is a global trend when it comes to purchasing vehicles and other assets. Motorhub’s Edmond Atto caught up with Apollo Twinomuhangi, the head of vehicle and asset finance at Stanbic Bank Uganda. To the average Joe, could you describe Vehicle and Asset Financing? VAF (Vehicle and Asset Finance) is an alternative means of financing the acquisition of identifiable, movable, durable and insurable assets. These may include Motor Vehicles, Machinery, Plant and equipment. How does leasing in Stanbic bank differ from that in other financial institutions? The difference may not be much but as Stanbic, the VAF product started in 2004 strategically because SBU needed to broaden its product offerings; to offer a range of options and deepen financial penetration in the market. This product is there to give an alternative form of financing to the already existing and new customer; aimed at ensuring the customer has a choice. The issue at the end of the day is service and being a one stop shop for your customers.
How are the payments generally structured? Unlike typical loans that have standardized repayments, for leasing, the repayments are structured to suit the client’s cash flows. For example, if I am dealing with an agricultural farmer who has got two seasons in a year, repayments would be structured to run with those two seasons. For a school, the repayments would be structured in a way that payments are made as and when the school receives income which is termly. So, the payments are always structured in line with the client’s income flow.
What are the pre requisites for an individual or business to qualify for this service? The key considerations for a business are the underlying contracts the business has, the cash flows, legal status of the business, financial performance of the entity, level of debt with other institutions and the business profile of the promoters. mation required is quite minimal. It is a specialized product but simple in terms of application. It’s a one page application form they would fill, prove they have a source of income and put down their equity contribution and we are ready to move forward.
If one applied for your product, and some where down the line, they lost their once proven source of income, what exit strategies would be available to this individual? At Stanbic Bank we treat our customers as partners. If for any reason the client is not able to meet their rental obligations, we advise that they approach their Account Executives to work out a mutual solution. In the field of motor vehicle financing, who has Stanbic partnered with to deliver this product? Does the client approach SBU and point out which car dealer they would want to buy from or are there particular agents you have partnered with? The beauty with leasing is, we will give you the chance to source, it’s you who knows best what you want, what your dream car is and which dealer you would want to work with. We will give you a chance to deal with whichever supplier or dealer you want to work with. If so you will need to get the gasket tightened or even replaced. Q. I am driving the car as I normally do but there feels like there is a lot power. What’s the problem? A. The ignition timing is faulty and will need to be looked at by a mechanic. Q. When running the engine vibrates violently and lacks power. What could be the cause? A. A misfire in one of the cylinders. To resolve the problem, an ignition coil will have to be replaced.

or sure Mercedes got some unjustified stick at the end of the season for their insistence on strategies that favoured their lead driver (whoever it was), but the fact that they have always allowed their men to race has always been to their credit. But before we get to possible reasons for Hamilton’s ‘decline’ - lest we forget he still finished a very close second in the final three races, and pushed Rosberg hard let’s look at how their intra-team battle played out this time. Right from the start, Hamilton looked super-comfortable and incredibly quick and to Rosberg’s surprise was more often the man on pole. And he was stronger is races to begin with, too. Hamilton should have won easily from pole in Monaco, where he had finally and convincingly turned the tables on his team mate after two years of defeat. The Englishman got everything together and was utterly dominant, but that very dominance misled Mercedes’ strategists into an ill-fated late-race pit stop that cost their man his most deserved success of the year. Of course, the Silver Arrows still won, courtesy of Rosberg, who headed Vettel home after neither had stopped again, and Hamilton trailed them in third
The reigning champion was back on form immediately in Canada, where he led Rosberg home, before the German beat him again in Austria. Hamilton then judged the weather brilliantly to win in Britain as the battle that raged so tantalisingly between the two men in 2014 swung back and forth once more. On the British track, however, poor starts had given both Mercedes drivers work to do to overhaul the Williams duo of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, and further

poor getaways enabled the Ferraris to pounce again in Hungary. As Vettel won from the Red Bulls of Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo, Hamilton - who went off early on and was latterly penalised was Mercedes’ best-placed runner in sixth behind Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso; Rosberg after a late puncture - was eighth.
Mission accomplished for Hamilton, thereafter the victories belonged to Rosberg, who converted three poles into three glorious successes.

With 257, Williams failed to score as many points as they did in 2014 - 320 - and though they repeated their third place overall, they had a generally disappointing year. The FW37 was not as competitive as the FW36, and though there were some good moments - such as running 1-2 for a while after fast starts at Silverstone - they came nowhere near emulating Massa’s late-season charge in the double-points finale last year. Off-track issues overshadowed Red Bull all season, but the former champions still scooped fourth in the constructors’ stakes. They made no bones about their frustration with Renault’s slow rate of development of a power unit that had already been criticised in 2014, and by mid-season it looked like the marriage was over as the team cleared the way for what was expected to be a deal with Mercedes.
