MAGIC MOUNTAIN MOMENT FOR BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS
Mount Panorama once again served up a day to remember for race fans around the world as a recordbreaking Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour provided all sorts of entertainment.
Drama, penalties and brilliant racing were all part of the epic 2023 edition of the popular 12-hour international endurance race that saw SunEnergy1 Mercedes team go back-to-back.
Jules Gounon, Luca Stolz and Kenny Habul all produced strong stints to pick up their second win in as many years, while Gounon secured his third win at the Mountain having won in 2020.
The Frenchman played a pivotal role in his team’s eventual victory as he had the responsibility of bringing the #75 Mercedes-AMG home.
After an epic final battle, the Frenchman ended up crossing the finish-line less than one second ahead of 2019 winner Matt Campbell, who was behind the wheel of the #912 Manthey EMA Porsche he shared with Thomas Preining and Mathieu Jaminet.
Rounding out the podium was the pole sitting GruppeM #999 Mercedes-AMG of Maro Engel, Mikael Grenier and Raffaele Marciello, with Engel guiding the car over the line less than one and a half seconds behind the winner – highlighting the closeness of the top three.

In fourth place was Sheldon van der Linde in the #32 Team WRT BMW with Dries Vanthoor and Charles Weerts, while Broc Feeney, Shane van Gisbergen and Maximilian Gotz made up the top five in their #888 Supercheap Auto Mercedes-AMG.
With the second Team WRT car of Augusto Farfus, Maxime Martin and seven-time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi finishing in sixth place – it marked a dominant day for the Pro class.
Finishing in seventh place was the Sportsbet Team MPC Audi R8 LMS Evo 2 of Chaz Mostert, Fraser Ross and Liam Talbot, with the trio taking out the Pro-Am class in the process.
Winning Class Silver were the 12th placed Daniel Gaunt, Dylan O’Keeffe and Andrew Fawcett in the MYLAND Team IMS Audi R8 LMS Evo 2.
As for the race itself, a number of records were broken, including laps completed and the overall completed distance.
With far less safety car interventions compared to previous editions, the class of 2023 were able to complete a record 323-laps over the course of the 12 hours and run a record 2006 kilometres.
The result also sees Mercedes equal Audi for the most number of Bathurst 12 victories, with each brand now having three wins in total.
In the event’s support categories, Geoffrey Taunton claimed a clean sweep of wins for the Duggan Family Hotels Bathurst Combined Sedans as Michael Robinson just edged out Rick Newman, Tony Groves and Mason Kelly for a runner-up placing.
It was a far closer affair in the Racer Industries Formula Ford Challenge as Elliott Cleary and Mitchell Gatenby shared the same number of points – the latter winning on countback due to his two victories. Round two of the Intercontinental GT Challenge is the Kyalami 9 Hour, which takes place on February 23-25.

THANK YOU, MIGHTY 12 HOUR OFFICIALS
Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca penned a letter to the event’s officials at the conclusion of the event.
Dear Officials,
As the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour drew to a close last night, there were plenty of accolades and celebrations from a race that delivered record crowds, a record number of laps and some impressive work from drivers and crews throughout the paddock. While most of that record crowd were there to enjoy the world class racing, for me personally the highlight was witnessing and hearing about the tireless work of our Motorsport Australia officials who put in such long hours across the weekend to deliver this event Australia can be proud of.
Whether it’s those working hard on a flag point, the pit lane officials keeping everyone safe, the fire and rescue crews or the scrutineers making sure the event is conducted in a fair and safe manner – the efforts of every official on the Mountain is worthy of our significant praise.
The lofty standards that the Bathurst 12 Hour sets and the reputation it has on the global stage is certainly in part thanks to the efficiency and professionalism of those officials making sure the event runs so smoothly and that no obstacle is too big to overcome to make sure the racing is fair and the integrity of the event lives up to its world-class standards.
Of course, we are also well aware there was plenty of other motorsport taking place around the country and a large number of officials on duty. We thank all 10,000 licenced officials who make this sport what it is.
As we move through 2023, we’ll be focusing on recruiting even more officials to our ranks and making sure we appropriately and regularly acknowledge that hard work whenever possible.
So again, to everyone who made motorsport possible across the weekend, thank you for your commitment and dedication.
Sincerely,
Eugene Arocca

A GRAND GIRLS ON TRACK OPPORTUNITY
Applications are now open for this year’s FIA Girls on Track – Career Development and Mentoring event at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2023.
As part of the program, participants will gain access to a number of high-profile ambassadors and see the inner workings of teams and event organisers.
Australian Girls on Track ambassadors will also be at the event to provide guidance, mentoring and advice as the next generation of girls look to make their mark on motorsport.
Up to 20 girls will be chosen for the session, which includes access to the event and behind the scenes tours around Albert Park, including the Formula 1 paddock area, thanks to
Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.
Last year, attendees got the amazing opportunity to meet with Formula 1 drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, as well as key members of the Alfa Romeo team.
Motorsport Australia
CEO Eugene Arocca encouraged all girls to apply to be part of the unique event.
“This is truly a oneof-a-kind experience that provides insights into motorsport that will prove invaluable,” Arocca said.
“Last year, the girls who attended got the opportunity to learn so much from some of the best in the business.
“Since then, several of last year’s attendees have gone on to gain experience in the industry, including here at Motorsport Australia. It is fair to say the program can potentially open some very important doors as these young girls begin their careers in the sport.
“A big thank you must go to everyone who supports this event, including the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, our Ambassadors and in particular, the Alfa Romeo Formula 1 team who are so generous with their time and support.”
Last year’s participant Ocean Tiseman said she left the day full of motivation.
“This is truly a oneof-a-kind experience that provides insights into motorsport that will prove invaluable.”

“The program just really made me know that it’s for me. Just being here was great and I loved it,” Tiseman said.
“The program was a once in a lifetime experience and it’s something I never would have imagined myself doing – I am so grateful for the opportunity.
“The highlight was the three hours with Alfa Romeo, as well as the Networking Lunch where I got to meet great professionals and get contacts with people that will help progress my future.
“My goal is to become a race engineer through mechanical engineering. If that doesn’t happen, then I would like to be on strategy of some sort.”
Girls on Track Ambassador and Triple Eight Race Engineering co-owner Jessica Dane encouraged everyone to apply.
"Last year's event at the Australian Grand Prix was a huge success and we're looking to build on that in 2023,” Dane said.
“Planning started literally straight after we'd finished so you can imagine how big this will be. This programme gives so much to the girls who participate, whether it's connections to mentors or the confidence to pursue their goals.
“The application process is certainly competitive, but it means we'll have a pool of truly incredible young women and I can't wait to see how the event benefits them in the near future and for years to come.”
Fellow ambassador Emma Notarfrancesco said the event would give participants insights into a number of different roles that exist in motorsport.
“The career development and mentoring event has proved to be a huge success, giving young women the opportunity to seek advice and support from our ambassadors,” Notarfrancesco said.
“It not only assists with their skills and knowledge in their chosen fields
but also has the ability to further their connections in the industry.
“It’s been incredible to hear the continuous success stories following the inaugural mentoring event. The majority of these women have had fantastic success stories, with some gaining internships, while others have already found roles within the industry.
“As a passionate GOT ambassador, it’s been a privilege to be involved in this particular aspect of the program and I look forward to another bright year ahead."
Applications are open now and will remain open until 11.59pm on Friday, 19 February.

BMW DRIVERS CLUB MOUNTAIN TAKE OVER
Members of the BMW Drivers Club Melbourne have their sights set on a bigger and better Challenge Bathurst charge in 2023 after a successful campaign in 2022.
The club managed to secure 18 BMW spots for the 2022 edition of the event and sent a combination of its own members and members from Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales to steer their cars.
As a club level event on a national scale, Challenge Bathurst allows any club from around the country to put together a team and contest either a supersprint or a modern regularity.
While neither one of the club’s cars managed to come away with a victory, it was still a highly successful weekend for all involved with a large portion of Bathurst first-timers behind the wheel of the cars.
Following on from the club’s 18car crusade and the amount of interest that was shown, the club now hopes to bring a whopping 55 cars and teams to this year’s edition of the four-day event.
Club vice-president Jo Mawson was one of those who attended the event and was already in the process of organising another trip again.

“We were given 18 spots for last year’s event and we were sold out within the first week which was incredible to witness,” Mawson said.
“And although there was high expectation amongst those who managed to secure a spot, absolutely everyone loved the event and how great it was.
“Not only was it a well-run event but there was a great atmosphere around the track – especially for us as we all had team shirts and we were able to camp there – it was a wonderful bonding experience.
“Challenge Bathurst is an amazing event which allows the average
person to drive one of the best tracks in the world. All people who attended were extremely helpful and friendly, so it made it very welcoming.
“We can’t wait for this year’s edition and highly recommend anyone who is in a position to do it to go and take part because you will not regret it at all.”
This year’s Challenge Bathurst takes place on 23-26 November with invitations for entries to be sent out in July.

RACING TOGETHER WINS GLOBAL RECOGNITION
Ground-breaking Indigenous Australian motorsport program Racing Together received significant international recognition late last year, as part of December’s Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) Prize-Giving Gala in Italy.
Racing Together received the inaugural FIA President’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award from FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The honour recognises
outstanding commitment to diverse and inclusive practices and activities that foster equitable, sustainable, and measurable change.
Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser and Racing Together director Monique Connelly accepted the prize from Ben Sulayem.
Co-founded by Monique Connelly and Garry Connelly AM, Australia’s FIA delegate, Racing Together was established in late 2020 and has been embraced by all levels of the motorsport world, from seven-time World Drivers Champion Sir Lewis Hamilton to Australia’s leading Supercars team owners.
The program’s initial induction invites Indigenous youth between the ages of 12 to 16 to participate in an intensive two-day
education and selection program that includes driver training, mechanics, personal health and well-being, career advice and life skills.
Successful applicants advance to participate in the full-time Racing Together program, which runs a karting program and prepares race cars for and competes in the nationally popular one-make Hyundai Excel series, currently running three vehicles with a fourth to be added in 2023.
In accepting the prestigious award, Monique Connelly said she was proud Racing Together was its first recipient.
“Every child, no matter their gender, ethnicity, economic circumstances, or culture, deserves the opportunity to experience the sport that we all love – motorsport,” Connelly said.
“We are so pleased that FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has created the award, and we are proud and honoured to be its first recipients.

“We also thank Motorsport Australia for its support, and on behalf of our Indigenous young people, thank you to the FIA and its President.”
Motorsport Australia
President Andrew Fraser congratulated Monique, Garry and all those involved in the program, both as participants and supporters.
“Racing Together is about opening the world of motorsport to people who previously believed they had no place in it,” Fraser said.
“Receiving the FIA President’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award gives us the impetus to continue pushing the boundaries of our sport.”
Sixteen-year-old Karlai Warner, who joined the program initially as a tyre technician and driving a go-kart, and has graduated to racing one of its Excels, said she was proud of the international recognition for Racing Together.
“The award makes me feel happy for what the team has accomplished;
it’s good recognition for the team, worldwide recognition, and exposure to show what Indigenous kids can do,” Warner said.
“Racing Together has taught me new skills, allowed me to race, and meet so many new people, which would never have happened if the program did not exist.”
Paul Morris, who supports and hosts the program at his Norwell Motorplex said he was incredibly proud of the program, its early achievements, and its recognition.
“When I first heard the concept, I thought it was a great opportunity
to have a positive impact with Indigenous kids,” Morris said.
“The Indigenous community has a substantial automotive culture but hasn’t had a pathway into motorsport until now.
“Everything we’ve learnt at Norwell throughout the years of training drivers and people, and what we know about motorsports, has helped us achieve real outcomes for the kids, and now to receive this award from the FIA is a huge acknowledgement of what we are achieving with Racing Together.
“There’s enormous potential; you need facilities to do what we are doing, and there are lots of those throughout Australia, so we are already rolling out Racing Together into other Indigenous communities.”
Directors of Racing Together: Garry Connelly AM, Monique Connelly, former RACQ CEO Ian Gillespie AM, Supercars Championship-winning Team Principals Roland Dane and Dr Ryan Story AM, Morris, and Indigenous Olympian and Commonwealth Games medallist, beach volleyballer Taliqua Clancy. The program is supported by: VIVA Energy, Supercheap Auto, Toyota, Norwell Motorplex, Motorsport Australia, Pirtek, Patrizicorse, Boost Mobile, Triple Eight Race Engineering, DJR Shell V-Power Racing, Slideways Go Karting Gold Coast, Karting Australia, Gunya Meta.

A further 12 Motorsport Australia affiliated clubs will share in more than $12,000 through the 2022 Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund.
The second round of funding from last year will see clubs utilise these funds for the purchase of much needed event system upgrades, as well as providing officials with upgrades to vital equipment.
Supported by Supercheap Auto, the program is targeted at supporting the growth and development of affiliated clubs and has delivered grants of more than $100,000 through Motorsport Australia over recent years.
This round of grants also sees several affiliated official based clubs receiving funding, including the Queensland Motor Race Officials Association, who will use the support to purchase new flag kits and for training new officials.
QMROA Club Secretary Corey Dyer said that the grant will assist the club with the purchase of the equipment that will be a vital stepping stone that paves the way to the club’s success and strategic growth into the future.
“The grant will enable QMROA to acquire 13 sets of flags, which will allow us to independently run large events or a few smaller events simultaneously around Queensland as the need dictates,” Dyer said.
The Queensland Fire & Rescue Club (QFRC), where Dyer is also Secretary, will receive funding toward recovery equipment. Dyer said the funding was a much-needed boost.
CLUB DEVELOPMENT FUND RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED
“Like much of our emergency rescue equipment, we hope that we never need to use it on a competitor that should come to grief, but it fills us, and no doubt our competitors, with considerable peace of mind that if the worst happens, we have the best state-of-the-art equipment on standby if it’s required,” Dyer added.
we are so pleased to be able to provide these funds for much needed equipment and support,” Arocca said.
“All clubs play a vital role in delivering motorsport across the country, and these 12 clubs selected in round two of the 2022 funding program are certainly worthy recipients. It’s very pleasing to see the funds assisting in all aspects of the sport, including for our officials who are the lifeblood of motorsport.
“A big thank you must go to Supercheap Auto, who this year have made the program possible. Partners like Supercheap Auto really do care about grassroots motorsport and support our passion to deliver important initiatives for these clubs.”
“On behalf of the Executive Committees of both clubs, I would like to thank Motorsport Australia and Supercheap Auto for sponsoring the purchase of this equipment and supporting us all whilst we continue to support motorsport at all levels both in Queensland and nationally. Both clubs are very excited about their respective purchases.”
Wanneroo Flag Marshal Association in Western Australia will also receive funding toward the purchase of emergency recovery equipment.
Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca congratulated the successful clubs.
“The Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund is an important program for our affiliated clubs and
Queensland and WA clubs represent the majority of funding recipients for this round with four clubs from each state. Clubs in South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria will also benefit from the fund. With round two now complete, a total of 34 Motorsport Australia affiliated clubs have been supported by the program in 2022.
The Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund has officially opened for 2023, with applications for round one being accepted until 31 May.

The ever popular Rally Retro Festival returns this month with METEC in Bayswater North to host an event that relives the magic of unforgettable rally cars of the past in a great opportunity for car enthusiasts to get their fix.
ROB ROY TO REVIVE HISTORIC CARS IN VINTAGE FESTIVAL
The MG Car Club of Victoria and the Victorian Historic Racing Register will join forces next month to put on a festival of historic motorsport at the famous Rob Roy Hillclimb.
To be known as the Rob Roy Revival, 75 invited historic racing cars will feature throughout the event as competitors put these revered machines of yesteryear to the test in a weekend full of action.
Headlining the list of drivers already confirmed is Australian Champion Driver John Bowe AM, who will also serve as the event’s Patron.
Other notable entries include Graeme Raper in the George Reed Ford Special Monoskate, Ian Prior in his Sebring MGA, Rodney North in his Cooper-Irving Mk and Kevin Miller in his Elfin 300.
For the first time, the Rob Roy paddock will be lined with marquees and spectators will be able to get up close to the cars and talk to the drivers and crew before they head out onto the course.
With the weekend to pay homage to the 1950s and 1960s, MG Car Club Secretary Tony Lupton was excited for what the event would look like.
“The Rob Roy Revival will recreate the atmosphere of 1950s and 1960s motorsport with spectators encouraged to dress in period style,” Lupton said.
“The track has been upgraded through a Victorian Government Community Motorsport Infrastructure Grant and many historic racing cars never seen before at Rob Roy will be competing.
“Improved spectator facilities and entertainment over the weekend will make this a unique event for motorsport enthusiasts and anyone interested in a fun and stylish festival atmosphere.
“The first Rob Roy Revival will be a tribute to Garrie Cooper’s Elfin marque, with William Atherton, Bill Bentley, Daniel Jeffries and Colin Sullivan already entered in Elfin Streamliners, Kevin Miller in an Elfin 300, Matthew Scott in an Elfin 600 and Shane Lee in an Elfin Formula Vee.”
In addition to the on track action, there will be live entertainment and amenities all weekend, including gourmet food and beverage options, market and trade stalls, live music and fashion shows.
Popular well-known 50s vintage style diva Lisa Defazio will also be in attendance and will MC many of the various entertainment activations.
Interested attendees are encouraged to wear their best vintage 1950s and 1960s outfits with fashion awards presented each day, while a period dress code will be required for anyone who wants to enter the paddock.
The event is supported by Motorsport Australia, Penrite, Racer Industries, Century Batteries, Shannons Insurance and Apex Steel.
Potential competitors with significant historic racing cars are encouraged to contact the event director Rod Cooper at rodcooper@westnet. com.au for further information.
Car clubs will also have an opportunity to participate, with up to 100 classics from the era on display each day, and should also contact Rod Cooper with their interest.
The Rob Roy Revival will take place at the Rob Roy Hillclimb on 18-19 March.

CHARTERS TOWERS THE GOLDEN TICKET FOR AORC
After an epic end to the 2022 Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) season, preparations for the 2023 season are well underway. With five rounds making up this year’s favourable schedule, it all begins in March with the Markwell Group Gold City 450 in Charters Towers, Queensland. Standing in the way of crews and a golden start to the 2023 season are 450 competitive kilometres of red soil, rock, grass and sand, which is spread over three sections.
With the course itself measured at 50km, national crews will be completing nine laps throughout the weekend – with each section made up of three laps.
The competition will commence with Prologue on the Saturday morning, before the first and only section begins not long after, while the remaining two sections will run on Sunday.
Pending the numbers, the field will be split into two groups, giving each and every crew a clear chance
to get a strong result both outright and in their respective classes.
Entries for the AORC season opener are now being accepted until 5:00pm AEDT on Saturday 18 February.
“The club has been putting in a lot of work to get it right and there has been lots of greenery as a result – it truly does look like God’s Country as it’s not often you see the north this green.
“We understand that it's a big trek to come out this way for many crews, but we’re confident that entries will progress nicely and that it will be an enjoyable weekend for all.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Markwell Group for getting behind the event as a major sponsor, as well as the businesses of Charters Towers who have been showing their support – we have 18 in total and that is likely to grow.”
With the season opener running next month, North Queensland Offroad Racing Association Treasurer Don Young was looking forward to welcoming the AORC to the town.
“North Queensland has had some really good rain in the last few weeks and the track has held up great, which gives us a lot of confidence that crews will enjoy it,” Young said.
The Markwell Group Gold City 450 takes place in Charters Towers, Queensland, on 10-12 March.

OFF ROAD FUEL TANK REQUIREMENTS UPDATE
Motorsport Australia wishes to inform Off Road licence holders and Scrutineers around the country of the below changes to fuel caps, valves and fillers.
FUEL CAP LOCATION
This requirement is to ensure that the fuel cap is physically protected by structural components of the chassis or safety cage structure. Each fuel cap must be protected in this manner.
A check method is to apply a straight edge across the surrounding chassis/ safety cage components in the vicinity of the fuel cap and there should be clearance to the cap itself.
NON-RETURN/ONE WAY VALVE
This is mandatory if the fuel filler is “remote” to the tank and therefore defined as a filler neck. The requirement is that this valve must be able to effectively restrict the flow of fuel out of the tank in the event of an incident should the filler neck be affected by the incident.
This valve must be able to perform this without requiring any external activation, such as using a mechanical valve that must be manually switched between an open or closed position. The non-return/one way valve must be fitted at the fixed fitting to the fuel tanks itself.
This applies to all Off Road fuel tanks including those that are standard for a production type automobile
There are many versions of non-return/one way valves:
• Flapper valve: a flap of ridged or flexible material that is hinged or fixed in such a way that fuel can enter the tank but is prevented from coming back out of the tank, either by a tension device (i.e. spring or similar) or by the weight of fuel trying to exit the tank.
• Butterfly valve: similar to a flapper valve, however the flap section may be in multiple pieces and perform similar to butterfly wings.
• Ball type: a valve that is essentially a ball contained within a cage or similar that is open in the normal position however as fuel tries to exit, the ball is settled onto a seat either by the weight of the fuel or in a gravity situation preventing the flow of fuel.
FILLER NECK
A filler neck is common in conventional production automobiles where the tank has a fitting to which a filler neck is connected, usually by a hose and clamps, and which locates the fuel cap (filling point) in another location to the tank itself.
Essentially any connection for the purpose of filling the fuel tank that is made up of joiners using hose clamps, tubes or other similar connections/materials will be considered a filler neck.
FIXED FILLER
For a tank that has a fixed filler on the tank that is fitted with a suitable leak-proof cap then nonreturn/one-way valves are not required – however their use in this case is highly recommended.
Example: fixed filler and cap attached directly to the tank, which may be part of a fixed plate assembly to the tank, or a tube welded to the tank with a screw thread or other physical mechanism for the cap.

NEW FACES JOIN MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA BOARD
Motorsport Australia has welcomed three new Directors to its Board for 2023.
Two new state-elected Directors will replace outgoing Vice-President Graeme Emerton (NSW/ACT) and Nick Rahimtulla (WA), while a new appointed Director will replace Thea Jeanes-Cochrane.
Former Australian Rally Commission Chair Jon Thomson was elected Director for NSW/ACT, following Emerton’s retirement, while John Gibbons was elected to represent Western Australia.
Meanwhile, current Karting Australia Director Samantha Reid will replace
Jeanes-Cochrane as one of Motorsport Australia’s Appointed Directors.
Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser congratulated the new Directors on their respective elections and appointments to the Board.
“We are pleased to welcome Samantha, Jon and John to our Board room, joining a strong, committed and passionate group of individuals,” Fraser added.
“As motorsport continues to rebound strongly from the recent pandemic,
it’s up to all of us to make sure we provide the administration with the tools and strategic direction to take the sport to the next level.
“We all recognise the challenges that lay ahead, including the significant increases to insurance premiums, as well as the importance of promoting sustainable, safe and inclusive motorsport activities. I am certain our new Directors share our mission for seeing more people enjoying more motorsport more often.”

GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS
JOHN GIBBONS WA Elected Director
Gibbons enters the Board with a wealth of experience in motorsport – as a competitor, an official and a fan.
For as long as he can remember, John would attend as many events around the state as he could, which ranged from spectating at Rally Australia, Supercars, Night Masters, state circuit meetings and rally events, motorkhanas and drift nights.
He soon found himself with a burning desire to start volunteering as an official after helping pack up at one of the events he attended, and soon enough – he was dedicating lots of time to motorsport.
As a competitor, Gibbons first completed a number of track days and driver training days, which led to him taking his driving serious. Over the years, Gibbons ran in a number of Motorvations, Rallysprints and Sprints.
For the past two decades, Gibbons has long been a contributor to the WA motorsport community, including the last few years where he has been involved in getting the new Albany Motorsport Park up and running.
“I really enjoyed the officiating which also allowed some of the motorsport bug to be itched as a course car on rally and TARGA events,” Gibbons said.
“I have found great joy in running rally events over the years and have been Clerk of the Course for a number of Forest Rally (ARC) and Safari Rally (WARC) events during that time.”
“I enjoy working with the team of officials out there and have great feedback with them for events and the overall.
“All in all, I am excited to be the Elected Director for WA and I am looking forward to working with the Motorsport Australia team in helping progress all aspects of our sport to new heights over the years to come.”

JON THOMSON
NSW/ACT Elected Director
Like Gibbons, Jon Thomson has long been involved with motorsport – a love affair that began all the way in the 1960s. After being inspired to get involved in rally after seeing the drivers reach the finish line in the 1968 London to Sydney Trial, Thomson knew he had found his niche. Since he got into the sport, he has never looked back as he has been involved as a competitor, council member and journalist for more than four and a half decades.
Thomson's best work as a competitor came as a co-driver in many rallies, but he also dabbled in circuit racing throughout the 1980s where he entered three-hour Production Races at Winton.
As an official, the New South Welshman has been just as busy. His journey began by just helping out his local car club to run events before securing a spot on the NSW State Council. Soon enough, Thomson was the chair of the NSW Council and held that position for a decade. Also, a member of the Australian Rally Commission, Thomson was looking forward to his next challenge as the NSW/ACT Director on the Board.
“I remember I always had an interest in rally after seeing the cars come through at the London to Sydney Finish line –I remember the incredible wonderment that I had watching, so that was certainly a key instigator,” Thomson said.
“In 1978, I got my first CAMS (Motorsport Australia) licence and soon after, gave up my career in aircraft engineering and decided to pursue a career as a motorsport journalist.
“I have been one ever since then, so not only has motorsport been a key hobby of mine, it has also been my livelihood.
“Now that I am joining the Board, I am very excited about this new phase. I am not just doing it for selfaggrandisement, I truly hope to make a difference.
“I have a bit of business background, have been a competitor for a long time and have worked in the sport – so I am hoping to bring some enthusiasm and pragmatism to the table.
“If I can make a difference and help the board make strong decisions that have a positive impact on the sport, then I will consider that an achievement.”

SAMANTHA REID Appointed
Director
Starting out as a karter in South Australia, Samantha Reid had a busy childhood racing at hundreds of events around her home state, New South Wales and Victoria with some junior championship titles a just reward for her hard work and determination.
At the age of 16, and in pursuit of a career as a professional driver, Reid made the switch to Formula Ford competing in state and National competition. She was the only woman on the grid on many occasions, however that didn’t stop her as she constantly pushed for top 10 finishes, a feat given the single car operation with her father up against professional race teams. Over the next few years, she went on to compete in Formula 3, Improved Production and the reality tv program, Shannons Supercars Showdown, before signing with Kelly Racing as an official test driver.
Behind the scenes, Reid was also spending her time working in the sport, helping CAMS (now Motorsport Australia) and the prestigious Murcotts Driving Excellence in road safety. Her innovative personality, passion and knowledge for the area saw her working with the FIA where she worked on junior development, talent identification and global road safety initiatives.
In 2021, she joined the Karting Australia Board and now, she joins the Motorsport Australia Board in the hopes of helping the sport evolve.
“I learned a lot in karting and was pretty passionate about motorsport as a whole, so for me, joining both Boards is about giving back to the sport that gave so many opportunities to me.” Reid said.
“I always loved motorsport because it’s one of the only platforms where men and women can compete equally, but also because of what you can learn. It inspired me to study Mechatronic engineering while also teaching me things like project managing, commercial operations, organising and relationship building - all these skills I have been able to carry into my career.
“I feel there is an opportunity to improve diversity. For me, there still aren't enough women in motorsport and I think we need to look at what motorsport offers outside of just driving.
“I am hoping to help build on the female community and improve environmental sustainability. Motorsport has always played an important role in leading innovation for the broader automotive landscape and in a world where there is growing concern about the environment, we need to ensure motorsport adapts and remains relevant.
She formed part of the judging panel for the prestigious Wheels Magazine "Car of the Year" in 2009 and 2010, chaired the Women of Australian Motorsport and represented CAMS on the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission between 2015-2017. She's worked with a number of OEMs in Australia in capacities from Learning and Development to supply-chain operations.
“I am looking forward to it. I think the quality of the Board and the supporting committees and State Councils have evolved a lot and we are in a better position than ever to tackle these challenges.
“What the likes of Andrew Fraser and Margot Foster as an example bring to the table, I think there is a lot of potential. Having the right mix of skills can make a huge difference in navigating some of the challenges ahead to deliver on Motorsport Australia’s vision, and I am excited.”

DEPARTING DIRECTORS OFFER FAREWELLS AND THANK YOUS
Following the departure of Emerton, Rahimtulla and JeanesCochrane, Fraser also thanked the outgoing Board members for their commitment and service.
“This is an exciting period for Motorsport Australia and our outgoing Directors should be proud of everything they have achieved during their respective tenures,” Fraser said.
“Graeme, who has served on the Board since 2009, has been a strong advocate for motorsport and a significant contributor, most notably as Vice President for a number of years. Graeme’s service to motorsport is worthy of celebration and we
GRAEME EMERTON
Vice President
Outgoing Vice-President Graeme Emerton has seen a lot of positive change since joining the Motorsport Australia Board in 2009.
A big believer in motorsport, Emerton played an integral role in building the sport within his home state of NSW as well as throughout the country.
In the late 1980s, he joined the NSW State Council and contributed to a number of changes, before joining the Australian Motor Racing Commission in the 1990s, which he later became Chair of.
Eventually Emerton joined the Motorsport Australia Board in 2009 and leaves quite a legacy after standing down at the end of 2022.
Some of the Board’s accomplishments during his time includes improving the culture and professionalism of the organisation, Motorsport Australia’s head office relocation from Malvern to Canterbury and
thank him for everything he has done during his time on the Board.
“Joining the Board in 2017, Nick has always represented Western Australia’s best interests and put forward a strong voice in ensuring we achieve our strategic objectives both in WA but also across the country.
“Thea, who joined us in 2019, has also provided valuable contributions to the organisation and her experience, knowledge and insights into the sports industry have been crucial to helping Motorsport Australia navigate recent challenges.”
the official name change from CAMS to the more universally friendly Motorsport Australia.
However, for the outgoing Vice President, it was appointing Eugene Arocca as CEO which was his proudest moment.
“There were a couple reasons why I stood down. The requirement of fresh ideas and having done more than enough time being some of them. I also supported the threeterm limit, so it is only appropriate to live by what I voted for as a matter of principle,” Emerton said.
“There are many things I am proud of - certainly the improvements in the standards and professionalism of the board and the organisation as a whole are up there.
“The improvement in professionalism to what it was to where it is now is very significant. The level of Governance and the relationship between board and administration reflects a far more professional organisation.
“The relocation from Malvern to Canterbury was also a very significant marker in the organisation, however
the success of Motorsport Australia is first and foremost down to the people across Australia, inclusive of the administration and volunteer base. I will always be extremely grateful to everyone for their support and input, particularly from the NSW State Council who entrusted me in such a key role.”
“Appointment of Eugene as the CEO was a key decision in my time. Having been involved for a long time and being part of that process, for me, Euge has done a wonderful job with the leadership and culture of the organisation overall.”
“I look forward to seeing the Board, under Andrew Fraser’s leadership, continue the good work. Every member has been selected on merit and will continue to deliver for Motorsport Australia.”

NICK RAHIMTULLA Director
Compared to many stalwarts of motorsport, Nick Rahimtulla was a late bloomer who didn’t get involved until he was in his 40s.
Born outside Australia, Rahimtulla migrated to Australia in the early 1970s and at that point, his only real experience with motorsport had been the East African Safari in 1969 and 1970. It would be another 20 years before he would experience motorsport again.
In 1992, his first taste of Aussie motorsport was in tarmac rallying and Targa Tasmania during its early days. As a competitor, he competed in a number of events around the country such as Dutton Rallies,
THEA JEANESCOCHRANE Director
Thea Jeanes-Cochrane has made an impressive impact on motorsport over the past few decades as both a promoter and a member of the Motorsport Australia Board.
A highly regarded and globally experienced individual within the sports and entertainment industry, Jeanes-Cochrane got her first taste for motorsport in the 1990s when she was marketing director for IMG Australia, promoters of the Gold Coast Indy 500.
An avid fan and motorsport promoter thereafter, Jeanes-Cochrane got her next chance to work closely in the sport in 2010 when she played a key role in producing the awardwinning Supercars season campaign starring international superstar P!NK. Her proven track record in creating, producing, commercialising and managing commercial events proved enough for her to be included on the Motorsport Australia Board in 2019, where she served for almost four years.
East Coast Rallies. Classic Rallies, Targa and much more before finding his niche with Targa West.
Rahimtulla also had a decade-long stint racing at many of Australia’s most notable racetracks such as Phillip Island, Sandown, Bathurst and Sydney Motorsport Park. He had owned Jim Richards’ original M3 and was certainly impressive behind the wheel.
Off track, Rahimtulla was also taking full advantage of his passion and was volunteering as a scrutineer, Event Command and Clerk of Course. Soon after he joined the WA Sporting Car Club committee in 2004 and then eventually the State Council.
From 2014 to 2017, Rahimtulla ended up Chair of the State Council before taking a step further and joining the Motorsport Australia Board – a position he held up until the end of 2022.
At 75-years-old and after five years on the Board, Rahimtulla believed now was the right time to step down.
“I found being on the Board very enjoyable. One of the key things I achieved was sorting out standing orders with the help of another Board member and the CEO and that was something that needed to be done,” Rahimtulla said.
As just the second woman to have held a coveted seat on the Board in Motorsport Australia history, Jeanes-Cochrane played a key role in some of the key changes to occur during her stint.
From utilising her industry expertise to help guide the business through a change of name and brand identity to contributing to the company’s 2020 – 2022 strategic plan and helping Motorsport Australia navigate through the COVID storm, both culturally and financially, JeanesCochrane has had quite the impact and one that she will forever cherish.
“I am proud to have been nominated to the board in 2019 as the second female director alongside Margot Foster, which helped pave the way for an increase in female representation on the Board as Kristen Bailey and Coral Taylor were soon added,” Jeanes-Cochrane said.
“This ensured that a balanced and inclusive approach to promoting motorsport pathways in Australia was at the forefront and contributed to important cultural shifts both within the organisation and its member base.
“I am also proud to have been a part of some key improvements in the manner
“I was also a bit involved with tarmac rally issues which I believe we achieved a result, improving participation at grassroots level which is something I have been pushing for and we have done great things in terms of IT, so I am quite content with my time there.
“I am now 75-years-old and I just felt it was time for a younger person to come on and continue the good work that we have been doing and add some fresh ideas.
“I feel like I have done what I can. I don’t think I would be representative of motorsport for what it is now, which isn’t easy to say, but it’s the truth and I am okay with that. I have gone back to being the State Council Representative, so I am still involved at a grassroots level.
“I am very pleased with my experiences, and I have plenty to keep myself mentally and physically occupied – my wife is more than happy that I have stepped back out of the car too.
“A lot of changes have happened and more will continue to happen with the new appointed directors who bring lots of new skills, which is great.”
in which Motorsport Australia goes about business including the growth and flourishing of the Girls on Track Program, a wider lens on the sport as a business generally with a focus on future venues and participation for enjoyment and closer relationships with our member base and sport promoters.
“It has been an honour to serve under two Presidents during my tenure in Andrew Papadopoulos and Andrew Fraser, as well as being involved in the Board's Return to Race strategy, which led the way for other sports administrators in what was a trying time for all.”

BUCKBY ŠKODA BACKING FOR RALLY LAUNCESTON
This year’s opening round of the Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC) will take on a new look, thanks to the support of ŠKODA and Buckby Motors.
To be known as Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston, competitors, crews and fans will head to Tasmania to begin one of the most highly anticipated rally seasons in recent years.
ŠKODA has a strong rally pedigree, with the ŠKODA FABIA R5 a regular feature in both the Australian Championship as well as the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in recent times. The ŠKODA R5 was the vehicle of choice for Supercars driver Shane van Gisbergen in his ARC debut in 2022, as well as during his WRC debut in New Zealand. In 2018, Eli Evans also won the ARC behind the wheel of the reliable ŠKODA FABIA R5 throughout the majority his Championship season. Buckby Motors Director Ben Newman said ŠKODA and Buckby Motors were proud to be supporting the event in 2023.
“This year’s Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston will certainly be the perfect start to the ARC season and Tasmania will be eager to showcase its amazing gravel rally stages in March,” Newman said.
“As someone who competed in the 2022 event, it was a fantastic rally that really offered plenty of challenges and excitement for both competitors and fans alike. We can’t wait for it to return to our wonderful city in March.”
Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca thanked ŠKODA and Buckby Motors for its support.
“To Ben and the team at Buckby Motors, we are proud to be in partnership with you for the 2023 Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston,” Arocca said.
“A March event will provide something very different for officials, fans, competitors and teams, given we’ve usually hosted this round in June or July.
“We love coming to Tasmania for events and are thrilled to be starting the Championship in the City of Launceston.
“The ARC is going from strength to strength and Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston is a terrific way to start our national rally season in March.”
Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston was a popular addition to the ARC calendar in 2022, using a mix of stages across the north of Tasmania. Harry Bates and stand-in co-driver Coral Taylor won the 2022 event, with two heat wins and the fastest time in the EROAD Power Stage to secure maximum points for the weekend. This year’s event will see competitors tackle 197 competitive kilometres, with the service park to be based in the heart of the City of Launceston, Inveresk.
Once again, all spectating will be free across the weekend, including access to the service park where fans can see all the cars up close and meet the wide range of competitors taking part in Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston.
The event will also include a state component, with the Tasmanian Rally Championship to feature at the event. This year’s Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston will be held on 2426 March in Launceston.
Spectator information and other key details about the rally will be available in the coming weeks.

ENTRIES OPEN FOR ARC SEASON LAUNCH
The 2023 Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC) season is one step closer with entries for the Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston now open.
Serving as the opener for one of the most highly anticipated ARC seasons to date, the Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston will see crews head down to the Apple Isle at the end of the March.
Often considered some of the best rally roads in Australia, Tasmania’s picturesque Autumn weather will certainly add to the spectacle, as crews kick off the season with a bang.
In what will be an almost identical schedule to last year, the country’s best rally crews will be tackling 207 competitive kilometres over the course of the 12 stages.
With the event split over two heats as a result of being a Sprint format, crews will complete 119 competitive kilometres over six stages on the Saturday, before taking on the remaining 89 kilometres on Sunday, including the EROAD Power Stage.
In addition to the ARC season opener, the event will also be hosting the opening round of the Motorsport Australia Tasmanian Rally Championship, with state crews to solely compete in Saturday’s six stages.
Rally crews interested in entering the Buckby ŠKODA Rally Launceston have until 6pm AEDT on Friday 10 March to enter.
Event Clerk of Course Hamish Marquis was excited to have the ARC begin its season in Tasmania and was looking forward to big event.
“It’s a very exciting prospect knowing that the ARC will kick off the 2023 season on our roads
will be coming, and if those turn out to be true, then the quality of the entries for this event will be incredible – so we’re looking forward to seeing the entry list grow.
“The event is virtually the same as last year, which isn’t a bad thing, as crews will be able use their previous knowledge to produce some strong results. We were hoping for some changes, but we had some heavy rain so we will have to wait.
“Having the event in March will allow us to maximise the longer days, which will have a positive impact and has the potential to be nicer for everyone – especially officials.
“We are hoping to get plenty of volunteers to help run the event and we are grateful for all who do, because without the hard work and dedication of officials, we couldn’t have motorsport.”
and we’re confident we will help the championship live up to the hype,” Marquis said.
“Being the first round of the season has many major benefits and one of those is the opportunity for a fresh start for all teams and drivers, who will be looking begin their seasons on a high.
“There are plenty of whispers about some new cars and who

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR OPEN WHEEL RACING
A new category will make its debut in 2023, with Australian Formula Open to provide a new opportunity for ‘wings and slicks’ racing across the country.
As part of its introduction into the Motorsport Australia system, Formula 3 cars, Formula Renault / Toyota racers, Formula 4 cars and other 'wings and slicks' racers will compete in one big field designed to provide an opportunity for the owners of these vehicles to race on the national stage, as well as compete for some impressive prizes.
The Australian Formula Open series will compete at the both the Shannons SpeedSeries and new for 2023 Motorsport Australia Trophy Series, along with other key events. That includes the first two rounds taking place in March as part of the AGI NSW Formula Race event, as well as the Asian Super Trofeo event at The Bend in June.
From there, the series will compete on the Trophy Series at Queensland Raceway on 4-6 August, the SpeedSeries at Sandown in September and then head to Phillip Island for the 2023 Island Magic.
The Australian Racing Group, category managers of S5000, have confirmed the 2023 Australian Formula Open Champion will receive a fully funded test in a Tim Macrow Racing-prepared S5000 and free entry to their first round of any subsequent S5000 campaign.
“We have worked hard to build Australian Formula Open in the last six months and had a successful debut at Phillip Island late last year," said category founder, six-time S5000 winner and Gold Star champion, Tim Macrow.
"Our discussions with ARG were about trying to boost the whole open wheel landscape in Australia so there is a logical progression from one to another.
"It's all operating at under the one banner with Motorsport Australia and there's now a clear pathway from state level open wheel racing right through to major events like the Adelaide 500.
"S5000 has already proved its position as a place where drivers can progress into top level categories anywhere, so going from AFO into that makes all the sense in the world.
"I'm excited to support it via Tim Macrow Racing and we're really pleased ARG has agreed to support the plans with the testing and free entry to the first round as well."
S5000 Category Manager Ben McMellan said the Australian Formula Open racing would provide somewhat of a pathway for prospective S5000 competitors.
"As S5000 continues to establish itself in Australia, creating progression into the category was important," McMellan said.
"Australian Formula Open will be well-run and will give drivers the skills they need to race at the pointy-end in S5000. We're looking forward to working closely with the Australian Formula Open team and Tim to build the relationship this year.
"It's a good thing for open wheel racing in Australia and our aim is to build that moving forward."
