Monthly message from Sunil Vohra, Motorsport Australia CEO

Welcome to 2024 in what promises to be a big year in Australian motorsport. We’ve hit the ground running at Motorsport Australia with several major events coming up in the early part of the year. It’s also a time for renewal as we work through our structure to better set ourselves up to meet the needs of the sport today and in the years ahead, so I want to share with you some of the issues we’re thinking of and how we aim to solve them.

A NEW SUPERLICENCE FOR SUPERCARS As the governing body, Motorsport Australia exists only to serve the long-term health and benefits of the sport. This shapes many of the initiatives we have around the rules of racing and safety - all with a focus on benefitting motorsport in this country. Part of that is the Superlicence driver pathway initiative, which we think is a step forward for Australian motorsport. We are pleased to have developed the new points based licence system with Supercars, giving drivers multiple pathways to the premier category in the country. To be issued a Superlicence in the new system, drivers need to be 17 years or older, have an FIA International Category C licence and earn 15 points over five years across a range of eligible categories. There is a weighting towards Super2 and Super3 as they are the closest in specification to Gen 3 Supercars, but the previous requirements to do six Super2 races no longer applies. The Australian Motor Racing Commission has oversight of the points allocations across categories, and will continue to review and refine over time.

HOME OF MOTORSPORT Protecting racing facilities has been a pressure issue for several years with historic facilities being rezoned for development and are under pressure on noise levels with housing encroaching ever closer. While temporary street circuits have recently become popular due to tourism and economic benefits– those investments do not provide an ongoing benefit to local clubs in the form of permanent facilities. Motorsport Australia’s strategic plan identified the opportunity for a dedicated Home of Motorsport next to Avalon Airport in Melbourne, which will be controlled by Motorsport Australia and focussed on clubs and groups going racing, training, education, driver development and safety research. Following initial Government funding in 2023 for a design phase, I’ve joined a smart team of specialists working on the investment case to submit to state government shortly. The case features track design and costings and highlights how motor racing facilities are an essential part of community infrastructure and the benefits to the sport and broader community for generations to come. If successful, it will be a game changer for Australian motorsport. And although we are in a time where historically high interest rates and debt levels make it challenging to secure the necessary funding and significant investment from a state government, we will work hard to make it happen.

STRUCTURES AT MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA Like many organisations, we are taking the opportunity to have a look at how we are structured. I am keen to further support grassroots racing and our colleagues across state structures, alongside additional backing in safety and technical areas. I’ll be able to share more on this in coming weeks. We also say farewell to one of the stalwarts of Australian motorsport in Mike Smith, who will move onto a leadership opportunity overseas after becoming a leading figure in global motorsport. We give our best wishes and thanks for his service to Motorsport Australia for 21 years.

If like me, you plan to go racing in 2024, I wish you every success and may your results give you much ammunition for the after-race banter. Have fun, race safe and respectfully, send it then bring it home straight. Whether you drive, spanner, officiate, organise, support or spectate – we are all part of the best sport on the planet. MICHAEL SMITH TO DEPART MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA After more than two decades at Motorsport Australia, Michael Smith, the Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations, will leave the organisation in February to take up an international posting. Smith first joined the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) as a member of the Victorian State Office and has since held several high-profile roles in the organisation. He leaves a significant legacy having led the organisation’s motorsport department and event operations most recently. During his time at Motorsport Australia, Smith has a long list of achievements having been one of the key leaders of the business in recent times.

HELPFUL HALL HONOURED For those who know motorsport, there can be lots of days spent on the road to volunteer at events all around the country. And when flying around the country is a significant part of your day job, it adds another dimension to what would already be challenging and tiring exercise. For Leanne Hall, the travel and long hours is something that doesn’t affect her – especially someone who is from Western Australia. Leanne has spent most of time travelling back and forth to events between Western Australia teaching new officials the ins and outs of the very busy pit lane, as well as how to use the radar gun. an individual people to love to work with as she’s fun to be around. However, it was her efforts during last year’s VAILO Adelaide 500 that saw her awarded this month’s Supercheap Auto Official Superstar.

Having worked interstate, Leanne arrived at back home in Perth on the Wednesday of the Repco Supercars Championship finale and flew straight to Adelaide on the same day. With little time to pack, she managed to make it to the South Australian capital and be a large contributor to the officials team during a memorable four day event. To thank Leanne for her superstar efforts as a Motorsport Australia official, she will receive a $100 gift card to spend in-store at Supercheap Auto, a commemorative pin, and a certificate.

The highly anticipated 2024 Repco Supercars Championship will kick off this month with the 12-round season to start with a bang at the spiritual home of Australian motorsport.

This year’s 24-car field has also been locked in with a handful of regular drivers switching outfits, as well as there being a number of new faces to contest the season.

Beginning with a 10-day extravaganza in Bathurst, the Supercars season will visit almost every Australian state and territory in 2024, while also making a stop across the Tasman for a round in New Zealand.

While the highest profile move was that of Will Brown, who went to Triple Eight Racing for the second seat left vacant by three-time champion Shane van Gisbergen, Brown's former Erebus teammate and 2023 champion Brodie Kostecki's sudden withdrawal from the opening round in came as the biggest shock for the community. With two Erebus seats vacant, Todd Hazelwood and Jack Le Brocq got the call up to fill the positions at the Victorian-based team. Nick Percat left Walkinshaw Andretti United to take Le Brocq’s old seat at Matt Stone Racing.

Replacing Percat at Walkinshaw Andretti United is one of three new recruits - New Zealander Ryan Wood making the step up from the Dunlop Super2 Series after finishing third last year. Joining Wood from Super2 is West Australian Aaron Love, who will partner up with James Courtney at Blanchard Racing Team after the Victorian team expanded from one to two cars for the 2024 season. The last of the three new recruits is 2018 Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia Champion champion Jaxon Evans, who will make his fulltime debut in Supercars for Brad Jones Racing after Jack Smith retired. In addition to the three new drivers, Richie Stanaway will be racing


full time in Supercars for the first time since 2019 and will be racing alongside Matthew Payne at Grove Racing after David Reynolds left to replace Scott Pye at Team 18. Supercars fans will be able to see all the new drivers in their new teams for

the first time this month, when the Bathurst 500 returns to the calendar in lieu of the cancelled Newcastle 500. With two 250km races making up the first round of the season, the event will wrap up the 10-day Bathurst SuperFest, which kicks off

with the popular Repco Bathurst 12 Hour the weekend prior. Serving as the first of four rounds in the Intercontinental GT Challenge, the event will see 25 cars contest the 12 hour race around the famous circuit, with a host of international and local stars entered. Headlined by Italian megastar Valentino Rossi, the international bill of drivers features the likes of Raffaele Marciello and Dries Vanthoor, while a handful of notable Supercars names will lead the Australian flag, including Chaz Mostert, Cam Waters, Will Brown, Broc Feeney, Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes. The Repco Supercar Championship begins the 2024 season with the Bathurst SuperFest at Mount Panorama from 16-25 February.

Motorsport Australia has confirmed the Australian Manufacturers’ Championship will return in 2024, with the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series to determine the winner. Manufacturers competing in the Series will be eligible for the prize, with points awarded throughout the TCR season. Competing as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries, with live and free coverage across the Seven Network in 2024, the Championship is expected to be fiercely contested between the wide range of manufacturers competing. While some manufacturers will have more cars competing than others, a points system has been created to ensure a fair playing field to reward high performers, rather than manufacturers simply with the highest number of entries. For each race throughout the TCR Series, points shall be awarded based on the highest finishing entry from each eligible manufacturer.

2nd: Manufacturer X 3rd: Manufacturer Y (3 points) 4th: Manufacturer X 5th: Manufacturer Z (1 point) Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith said the re-introduction of the Australian Manufacturers’ Championship was an important addition to the motorsport landscape. “The Australian Manufacturers’ Championship has a strong history in Australian motorsport and we are thrilled to re-introduce it to the TCR Australia Series in 2024,” Smith said.

“There is a wide range of engaged manufacturers in TCR with hotly contested racing every round, so adding this further incentive for manufacturers to compete for another piece of silverware is certainly an exciting addition to the category and the Shannons SpeedSeries.” The Australian Manufacturers’ Championship was last awarded in 2015 to BMW, after first being introduced in 1971. It was last awarded to the winning manufacturer in the Australian Production Cars Series. Previous winners throughout the many years of the trophy’s history include Holden, Ford, BMW, Nissan, Toyota and Hyundai. Manufacturers must apply to be eligible for the Championship through the Motorsport Australia website

Four categories will be in action over the course of the busy three-day Race Sandown, with the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series, Giti Australian

Formula Open, Australian Production Cars and the National Trans Am Series making up the schedule. Every category will stick with a traditional three-race round, with the exception of Production Cars, which will have four 30-minute races throughout the event. In a big win for fans, the action will be streamed live and free on via the Seven Network, with the majority of Saturday and Sunday’s sessions to feature as part of 7plus’ extended coverage.

Meeting each other at Porsche Centre Melbourne, Taylor gave Sir Richard a tour of his Porsche GT3 Cup car, which is backed by auticon - the largest autistic IT consulting business in the world. With Taylor himself having autism, the youngster was thrilled to welcome Sir Richard in an unforgettable moment. "It was an absolute honour to meet Sir Richard Branson at Porsche Centre Melbourne Motorsport and have him check out my race car," Taylor said.

2024 TECHNICAL APPENDIX UPDATED AND ONLINE Motorsport Australia would like to advise members that the Motorsport Australia Manual, Technical Appendix for 2024 has been published. While changes have been applied across several of the Technical Appendix schedules and can be found at Technical Appendix – Summary of Changes, there are some key changes to note listed here:

SCHEDULE H FIRE EXTINGUISHERS CIRCUIT RACE

As of 1 January 2024, Fire Extinguishers are now compulsory for all Automobiles in a Circuit Race. Each Automobile must be fitted with a fire extinguisher in a Circuit Race as follows: National Championship, Cup, Trophy, Challenge or Series: •

SCHEDULE D – APPAREL

SNELL SA2010/ SAH2010 HELMETS / REFUELLING APPAREL As originally advised in the 2017 Manual, Snell SA2010 and Snell SAH 2010 standard helmets have now been moved from Level A standards to Level B and therefore no longer compliant where a Level A helmet is required. The minimum requirement for refuelling apparel has been updated to reference apparel that is defined by the Motorsport standards listed in Schedule D. Please refer to Motorsport Australia Manual; Technical Appendix - Schedule D for further information.

A maximum duration of two years between safety cage registration and logbook application has been introduced. Dismountable joints J-48 and J-49 have been removed from the schedule and notification of additional dismountable joints to be removed from the schedule effective 1 January 2025. The use of Aluminium safety cage structures will be phased out, with only compliant steel safety cage structures permitted for Race, Rally and Off Road competition, regardless of date of safety cage registration or logbook issue (Excluding 5th Category Historic Automobiles). •

ROB ROY FESTIVAL TO WIND THE CLOCK BACK

The famous Rob Roy Hillclimb will play host to its second Revival festival next month after the inaugural event in 2023 proved hugely successful. With a vast range of historic motorsport disciplines taking on the famous hill climb course, coupled with live entertainment and a handful of period-based activations, the atmosphere for the Rob Roy Revival is shaping up to be a big one. Taking place over the first weekend of March, competition will be split over two days with practice and the first runs on Saturday before the main runs are held on Sunday.

In addition to the action, Sunday will also see live music, fashion shows and a variety of gastronomy options all contributing to a traditional picnic race atmosphere of the 1940s through to the 1960s. While all attendees will be encouraged to wear vintage 1950s and 1960s apparel, the best of which will be judged and awarded with prizes, the racing side of the event will see 80 invited historic racing cars battling it out – led by Australian icon and event patron, John Bowe AM.

MG Car Club Secretary Tony Lupton was excited for the weekend and encouraged interested attendees to get behind the event. “Featured marques at this year’s Rob Roy Revival are MG and Triumph, two great sports car manufacturers celebrating their 100th anniversaries. FACT OR FRICTION? 5 FIVE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT MOTORSPORT ABS

As a driver, you already know that braking is one of the most critical aspects of on-track performance.

Motorsport ABS technology has been a competitive advantage in braking zones since the early 1990s, however we’ve identified five misconceptions that still get repeated in pit lane. So here’s your guide to telling fact from fiction when it comes to ABS in Motorsport.

1: ABS IS PURELY A SAFETY TECHNOLOGY

ABS was originally developed as a safety technology to prevent the skidding of tyres, particularly in a ‘panic brake’ situation. It has saved countless lives by reducing braking distances and allowing drivers to retain steering control to avoid a collision. Motorsport ABS operates on similar principles and will make a race car safer but is fundamentally a performance-enhancing technology. A motorsport system uses high-speed sensors to monitor the speed of each wheel, hydraulic pressure, and

6-axes of acceleration/yaw to deliver ultimate deceleration and control by keeping each tyre in the optimum slip range during ABS activation.

2: A TOP-LEVEL DRIVER IS FASTER WITHOUT ABS

A driver in a non-ABS vehicle will modulate their braking to the tyre with the least grip, whereas Motorsport ABS intelligently brakes each wheel individually, handing a fundamental advantage to ABS. In a single corner, a professional driver may ‘beat’ the ABS

by perfectly anticipating the dynamic grip levels through a corner, but over a lap distance and in changing grip conditions the unfaltering efficiency of a well-calibrated Motorsport ABS system will win out. Indeed, ABS technology was adopted by Formula One teams in the technology spree of the early 90’s but was quickly banned. Today, the Bosch Motorsport ABS system is widely adopted by racing teams and drivers across the world.

3: THE ORIGINAL ROAD CAR ABS SYSTEM WORKS FINE IN MY RACE CAR

Road car ABS is very good in modern vehicles, and in some highperformance models may have a more ‘aggressive’ calibration for occasional track use. However, once you begin to modify your brakes, wheels or tyres, the factory ABS is unable to adapt its outputs to match the car’s changed dynamics. In the worst cases, this may reveal itself as the dreaded ‘ice mode’ where wheels decelerate more rapidly than the factory software is programmed

to expect. Although there is more ‘deceleration potential’ from better brakes or tyres, the factory ABS may intervene to bleed off braking force when the driver needs it most. Motorsport ABS is uniquely configured to each car and drivers can select the intervention level on-the-fly.

4: A WELL SETUP CAR WON’T BENEFIT FROM ABS

Motorsport ABS will make a good brake system even better, but it is just as important to get the fundamentals of braking-system design right if you expect optimum results.

Motorsport ABS brakes the car harder than a non-ABS system, so the additional kinetic energy dissipated means more heat generated. As a result occasionally other additional upgrades are recommended.

5: MOTORSPORT ABS IS TOO EXPENSIVE

Quality and performance are rarely inexpensive, but considering the cost of flat-spotted tyres or accident damage, Motorsport ABS can quickly pay for itself. Each ABS unit is assembled by Bosch’s motorsport engineers in Abstatt, Germany and the popular Clubsport kit was developed to enable more cars to benefit from the technology at a lower price point.

The 2023 Formula SAE – Australasia competition was held at the end of last year as hundreds of university students from around the region put their self-made Formula-style open-wheeled racing car to the ultimate test.

Formula SAE is a world-wide program that sees students design, build and compete in a motorkhanastyle event for their universities in a variety of categories.

Focusing on a variety of elements that are required for racing teams when developing a car, students get experience in engineering, management, leadership, teamwork, marketing and finance – all of which can prepare them for a career in motorsport.

This year’s Australasian competition took place at Calder Park Raceway where 34 teams from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Taiwan, Indonesia, India battled it out over three days. There were three categories making up the event, with 23 Electric Vehicles and five Combustion engine teams entered, while six teams were entered in the non-competitive Autonomous vehicle class. Across the three days of competition, teams completed a number of presentations, where they were scored on their business presentation, cost and engineering design before their car underwent a number of tests. For the driving component, each team was judged on their car’s

acceleration, efficiency and endurance in Skid Pan and Autocross tests. Australian teams were some of the best performers across the event, with Western Australia’s Edith Cowan University winning the Internal Combustion competition, while the University of New South Wales, Sydney and the University of Queensland finished the Electric Vehicles competition in second and third respectively, falling just short of New Zealand’s University of Canterbury. A number of other awards were handed out across the day, with the Motorsport Australia Award going to the University of Technology Sydney after overcoming a number of significant issues, and maintaining great team spirit throughout their challenges.

SUPERLICENCE RETURNS WITH NEW STRUCTURE Motorsport Australia has confirmed the Superlicence will return in 2024, with new eligibility criteria to benefit the whole of motorsport.

The changes provide a clear pathway to compete in the country’s top tier motorsport category, with a wide range of national level motorsport categories receiving points that contribute to the new licence structure. Motorsport Australia has worked in partnership with Supercars to determine the new system which will see competitors requiring a minimum

of 15 points under the new structure. The Superlicence criteria has now been approved by the Motorsport Australia Board, Supercars Commission and the Australian Motor Race Commission. The Dunlop Super2 and Super3 Series remain a key part of that mix, with the highest points awarded to these junior categories.

EXPERIENCED HEPBURN STEPS DOWN FROM FORMULA VEE ROLE After almost three decades as Formula Vee Australia’s Technical Director, Greg Hepburn will step down from the role and into retirement.

Likely to leave a long-lasting legacy within the organisation, Hepburn has achieved a lot since his first race in Formula Vee back in 1986. Following on from his competitor stint, he began helping organise his local series before joining a handful of Motorsport Australia state committees and panels, which included hill climb, motor race and the state executive.

Australian Formula Vee turns 60 next year, it is important for it to be able to keep regenerating itself. “I would like to thank Noel Gibson for encouraging me to take the Grade 3 Scrutineers course and Grade 2 Technical Commissioner for Formula Vee, Greig Black for all the lessons I learned from him and Graham Emerton, who was always very supportive with how to go about resolving issues.”

MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA AND S-TREND REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT

Motorsport Australia and its merchandise and apparel partner, S-Trend, have combined to improve their carbon footprint in the apparel sustainability space in 2023. The Australian apparel company reached some remarkable achievements last year as it implemented several initiatives across the year, with its most notable being the introduction of STRenew sustainable teamwear. Emerging as leaders in crafting sustainable custom teamwear within Australia, S-Trend’s newest range of fabrics are all derived from technical, sustainable fibres transformed from recycled plastic bottles. In 2023, the company transformed more than 670,000 plastic bottles into teamwear apparel for all its merchandise partners, including Motorsport Australia. With Motorsport Australia opting to throw its support behind the initiative, the two organisations collaborated to transform 8686 plastic bottles into traceable and certifiable eco-performance polyester, which was ultimately used in uniforms for administration staff and volunteer officials.

In addition to its successful STRenew initiative, S-Trend has also earned Gold certification under the Worldwide
