The Historic Sports Cars and Racing Association (HSCRA) put on a magnificent show at Sydney Motorsport Park last month with more than 200 cars part of the 2022 HSRCA Sydney Classic. After what had been a tough run of events for the club with poor weather, COVID cancellations and flooding, it was finally blessed with sunshine and blue skies for the two-day event. From Group N, Heritage Touring Cars’ Group C and A, and Australian 5-Litre Touring Cars to Formula Ford and Formula Vee, and MG and Invited British Cars,

there were plenty of categories for fans to enjoy with 10 different fields making up the busy schedule. As for the official business itself, there was highly competitive racing across the board, however many of the categories saw individuals dominate their respective fields. Some of those included Aldo De Paoli guiding his 1969 Chevrolet Camaro to pole and three race

wins, as did Jonathan Webb in the Heritage Touring Cars.

In Group S, Wayne Seabrook steered his 1976 Porsche Carrera to four wins, beating an identical podium for each race made up of Terry Lawlor and Doug Barber.

In the Regularity, there were three different winners with Bruce Melville starting on a high note in the S3 Elan, while Bradley Bassett took out the second run before Greg Boyle scored the most points in the final session.

There may not have been any racing in the Supersprints or Regularity, but it was still an exciting collection of cars and results with Bob

PIASTRI BESTOWED YOUNG VICTORIAN STAR AWARD Oscar Piastri has claimed yet another award, being named as the 2021 Victorian Sport Awards’ Global Wellness Tracking Young Athlete of the Year. Held annually, the Victorian Sport Awards honour those who have made outstanding contributions to sport in Australia or internationally, and recognise athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers from both metropolitan and regional areas in Victoria.

Last year proved a highly successful run for the Alpine Reserve F1 driver after becoming the first Australian to win the FIA Formula 2 Championship courtesy of six wins, a further five podiums and a five pole positions. The 21-year-old was nominated for two awards during the gala dinner, including Male Athlete of the Year. While he was awarded the Young Athlete gong, the Male Athlete of the Year Award went to tennis champion Dylan Alcott AO was named as the Male Athlete of the Year.

Motorsport Australia volunteer officials Bruce Astbury and Lucy Hatton were also nominated for separate awards throughout the evening, but neither claimed top prize despite their impressive efforts.

BUDGET ENDURANCE SERIES BOOSTING GRASSROOTS TRACK TIME Motor Events Racing has officially confirmed the remainder of its budget endurance motorsport series calendar with two big events to take place at Sydney Motorsport Park between July and October. Starting off this month, the popular series will be hosting its 12 hour daynight War on Winter event before returning to Eastern Creek in October for the 7 Hour NöBugerRING. Since its inauguration in 2019, the aim of the series has been to create 8 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

an environment where drivers with all levels of experience can go up against each other in a manner where all teams have equal opportunity to win. There are a number of different formats making up the calendar, including one-day events that last a minimum of seven hours, two-day events lasting more than 14 hours and three-day events that span 20 or more hours. Each event is run similar to an endurance race where teams of four or more drivers share the tasks of driving,

fuelling and repairing their car to make it through to the allocated distance. Separating this series with other endurance events is the fact that teams are limited to cars that hold a value of $5000 and are allowed five modification points to update the performance of the vehicle. From Excels and Pulsars to Toyota 86’s and Improved Production cars, the series allows for all types of vehicles to enter, organised into four different classes based on factory engine power.

With the series also aligned with supporting the Rare Cancers Australia charity, Motor Events Racing Chief Executive Officer Ben McGuire believed the series was beneficial to competitors for multiple reasons. “Motor Events Racing is Australia's largest budget endurance motorsport series and proud to be aligned with Motorsport Australia,” McGuire said.

“This is due to the no pressure and social aspect of these events along with the huge amount of track time on offer.

“Since 2019, this series has gained huge popularity amongst experienced motorsport participants, new or learning motorsport enthusiasts and of course the weekend racers of Australia.

“The fact that there is that budget cap and those five modification points, means the events are kept true to entry level motorsport and allow the fields to stay nice and close.

"The modification points exclude the necessary safety items such as roll cages, race seats and harnesses, but allow enough flexibility for people to have their car set up as they would like it.

“As for Rare Cancers Australia, the charity does amazing work for people in tremendously difficult situations and that's why we are committed to donating money for it - so far, the series has raised over $60,000 and counting. “If you want more track time than you know what to do with and a fun social weekend away with friends and a family this series is for you.” The next Motor Events Racing event will be the War on Winter and takes place at Sydney Motorsport Park on 10 July.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT FUND OPEN FOR ROUND TWO Motorsport Australia affiliated clubs have another opportunity to claim a financial boost with the second round of the Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund now open. Targeted at supporting the growth and development of clubs and the motorsport industry, the Supercheap Auto supported program has delivered grants of more than $100,000 through Motorsport Australia in recent years. In the first round of funding announced earlier this year, 22 clubs were successful in their applications to receive offers – a record for the program.

“The money we received from the Club Development Fund is being put towards the much-needed kitchen that will help us feed the volunteers and participants” New South Wales was the most successful state with 10 clubs having received funding, while Queensland and South Australia had four each, Western Australia three and Tasmania one. One of the clubs to receive the funding was the Sydney Off Road Racing Association and Club President Shane Ramsay believed the funding was crucial. “The club is still reeling from the bushfires that destroyed our facilities a couple of years ago. What was there for almost 50 years was destroyed in just 24 hours,” Ramsay said. “We have been spending the past two years trying to rebuild the club to where it was and any funding that we receive is mighty helpful in reaching that goal.

“The money we received from the Club Development Fund is being put towards the much-needed kitchen that will help us feed the volunteers and participants for our local and state-run events. “We are grateful for these opportunities from Motorsport Australia, the six to 12 people key in driving the revival and having the backing of our local member and the Government support – without all of those, it wouldn’t be possible.” With round two open until 27 October, clubs will have four streams for which they can apply for. • • • •

While there are four avenues of funding available, clubs are encouraged to use the funding for events and programs that positively contribute to diversity and inclusion within motorsport and help grow membership numbers. Interested clubs looking to apply for the Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund will need to contact the Motorsport Australia Regional Development Executive within their state/territory to discuss their project prior to application. In an added bonus for clubs, all successful applicants will also receive a Supercheap Auto gift card to spend at any of their 280 stores in Australia.

GIBBONS LENDING HELPING HAND TO ALBANY COMPLEX As the Motorsport Australia representative on the Albany Motorsport Park Board (Board), Motorsport Australia WA State Council Deputy Chair John Gibbons has been hard at work on the Albany Motorsport Park in recent months. Having been in development for a few years now, the versatile motorsport complex will feature a range of areas dedicated to multiple disciplines upon its completion.

A highly experienced individual within the state’s motorsport community, Gibbons was invited to join the Board in September last year.

Since his appointment, the Motorsport Australia WA State Council Deputy Chair has played a major role liaising between the facility, Motorsport Australia and the City of Albany Committee.

In what will be a welcome motorsport addition to the already thriving Albany community, which hosts popular events such as Albany Classic, Show ‘n Shine and Targa Albany Sprint, the new precinct will be headlined by a new race track.

Scheduled for completion in December 2023, it will also house a number of precincts for motocross, 4WD, driver training and ATVs.

Earlier this month, Gibbons presented to the committee’s council members and mayor to provide a background on the history of Motorsport Australia and its commitment to track licensing, permits, officials training and safety, before attending the precinct site.

Following on from the visit and presentation, the Council approved the lease for the facility. “It’s a fantastic result for both Albany Motorsport Park and the greater Albany community for many reasons,” Gibbons said. “This facility will have a positive impact on Albany’s economy as there are many

people expected to attend in a range of capacities once it officially opens. “The facility was very happy to have someone from the state executive on its board, especially since I also talk to Government ministers for the rally events I organise. “This has already proved quite beneficial, and I think any concerns the Council had regarding the circuit and its value has been alleviated. 'To goal of this facility is to operate an affordable and sustainable multiuse motorsport park for the Great Southern Region and I believe it will certainly add to the already popular motorsport presence there. “I would like to acknowledge Theo Newhouse, who led the facility’s development committee, as well as all the other members for their fantastic efforts in getting the project over the line.”

PSYCH AND SCIENCE ADDRESSED IN JULY WEBINAR Motorsport Australia’s next edition of the FIA Girls On Track popular webinar series will focus on sports psychology and sports science. The webinar, to be held on 25 July at 6.30pm AEST, will address a range of topics in the sports science and sports psychology area, a focus for many in motorsport. The webinar will be hosted by Girls On Track Champions, Charlie Bullis and Dr Kotryna Fraser. Dr Fraser is an early career research and a Lecturer in the discipline of Exercise and Sport Science within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

Her expertise lies in Sport and Performance Psychology and Behaviour Change. also is a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist (Psychology Support) and has been providing Sport and Performance Psychology services to athletes and coaches since 2013. Dr Fraser was first introduced to motorsport in 2013 during the FIA Young Driver Excellence Academy. Since then, she has worked on psychological and cognitive driver assessments and development during the FIA Young Driver Excellence Academy 2015 and W-Series 2019, 2020, 2021, as well as individual driver development in the UK and Australia (from karting to Supercars).

NEXT GENERATION OF FORMULA FORD COMING SOON A new breed of Formula Ford cars will come to Australia in 2024.

The tubular chassis will feature a number of new safety components, including the halo, front and rear crash structures, side impact crash structure, an extractable seat, driver headrest, sidepods and wheel tethers. It is estimated the new cars will be approximately one second per lap quicker than the current car. Multiple manufacturers will be given the opportunity to build the cars, which will debut in a new look Formula Ford National Championship in 2024, with the category to continue to earn all-important Superlicence points. Existing cars will remain eligible to compete alongside the new cars for a further five years, until at least 2027.

The new car will also not be eligible for competing in Motorsport Australia State Championships until sometime into the future, with a date to be confirmed soon.

“We’re excited to be announcing this new generation of Formula Ford car which will be developed and built by a number of motorsport manufacturers around Australia,” Smith said. “We are announcing this new car now so we can give certainty to the market as well as helping the next generation of racers consider their careers and development opportunities

“Based on our ongoing discussions, Formula Ford still has the support of the industry and is seen as a suitable pathway for many young drivers and bringing in a new car allows the category to continue to be a relevant pathway for those up-and-coming drivers.” Australian Motor Racing Commission (AMRC) Chair Ryan Story AM was also pleased with these newest

FIA SAFETY BULLETIN: KEEPING OFFICIALS SAFE The role of officiating at a motorsport event can be exciting, challenging and rewarding, but only if carried out in a safe manner.

4. Do not lean on any guardrail, concrete blocks, or debris fences as they are designed to move when hit by competing vehicles.

To ensure that everybody enjoys motorsport while minimising risks, hazards, and unnecessary exposure to danger, the FIA has released information for officials by releasing the following advice:

5. Do not move in front of barriers unless instructed to do so by the Clerk of the Course or your Senior Marshal, and only remain exposed trackside for the absolute minimum time necessary to complete your task.

1. Make sure you are standing up, fully alert, and facing oncoming traffic at all times while the track or special stage is live for competition. 2. Expect the unexpected. Be prepared for any situation that may arise, even during safety car procedures, on a formation lap or after the chequered flag. 3. Always have an escape plan in place. Remember, your primary consideration must be to protect yourself from danger. 6. Always check and double check the status of the track or special stage (live, open/closed or hot/cold) before entering the racing surface. 7. Be careful when climbing over barriers and while climbing up or jumping down from protective earth banks. Check that the appropriate flag signals are being shown for your protection, and double check that there is still a need for you move in front of the barriers or onto the stage. 8. Attend all safety and operational briefings and follow instructions from Senior Officials.

9. Be prepared. Protect yourself from extremes of weather, sunburn, hearing damage, dust, and dirt in your eyes. Wear suitable footwear for your duties, and gloves if you are likely to be handling hot or sharp debris. 10. If in doubt at any time, seek advice from your Senior Officials.

SPIZZO DOMINATES OFF ROAD'S COLO PARK RETURN 28 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

The Sydney Off Road Racing Association hosted the first round of the Motorsport Australia NSW Off Road Racing Championship last month with Glenn Spizzo and Anthony Lia taking out the Colo Park Challenge. With the 25 crews from around the state entered in the club’s first major event since bushfires devastated it back in 2019, it was an entertaining event that saw Spizzo power to a comfortable victory. Taking place at the club’s home location in Colo Park, crews tackled 18 laps of the four kilometre course, spread out over six different sections, which were all won by Spizzo and Lia.

Despite winning all six sections, the duo were challenged for much of the day by Thomas Dixon and Jess McGrath, with the closest margin being in the second section where just four tenths of a second separated the two Pro Buggies. Although the runner-up crew tried their best and finished the middle four sections within 10 seconds, Spizzo’s 35 second section one win and his 22 second final stage win proved the difference. At the end of the event, just over one minute separated the two crews and

a further four minutes off was David Chandler and Jonathan Ryan who sealed an-all Pro Buggy podium.

Split between the two buggies in seventh place was Sportslite winners Jake and James Megaloconomos.

Missing out on a podium by less than two minutes was Prolite winner Brenden Turner and Guy Baumann, while Michael and Eric Latemore rounded out the podium.

Other class winners to finish the event were Warren and Bradley Barron, who rounded out the top 10 ahead of Extreme 4WD winners Michael Baxter and Ian Egdell - the Super1650 class winners taking out what was the closest battle for positions throughout the event.

In sixth place was the event’s fastest UTV piloted by Kevin Cant and Ethen Harris - the SXS Sport winners were almost nine minutes faster than the eighth placed SXS Pro Buggy of Nicholas Segrott and Phillip Meyers.

MSCA VICTORIA GOES AROUND THE BEND After two COVID-induced false starts, the Marque Sport Car Association of Victoria (MSCA) finally made it to The Bend Motorsport Park with the club holding an event there last month. More than 150 competitors and their crews from Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia attended the event and got plenty of laps around the world class circuit in Tailem Bend. With each driver getting multiple sessions in an attempt to post the fast lap around the track, it was the MG Car Club Victoria’s Ian Branson who took out top honours, guiding his Hyper X1

open-wheeler to an impressive time of two minutes and one second. The event proved a raging success for the club with the friendly atmosphere making it a wonderful day for competitors, crews and officials. MSCA Secretary and Course car driver for the event Petrina Astbury was left highly impressed with the circuit and paid credit to all the officials. “To say The Bend is a technical track is an understatement,” Astbury said. “It is packed with squiggly bits, blind and off-camber corners and a beautiful right-hand sweeper that, if you get right, flows so sweetly. That’s what makes it challenging and a whole lot of fun. “A special note of thanks to our Victorian officials who made the trip over, and to the SA officials who helped bring our day together. The Bend staff were so helpful, and the facility was world-class.

“It was a motorsport resort that we called home over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. “Well done to the competitors for their patience and for sticking with it despite the two-year hiatus and the MSCA appreciates their ongoing support.” The club still has a busy calendar scheduled for the rest of the year with events at Winton, Sandown and Phillip Island still to take place, before wrapping up with the ever popular Come and Try Day at Phillip Island on 3 December. MSCA events are open to all speed licence holders, enter via the Motorsport Australia Event Entry system.

PRICE DOMINATES FINKE TO GO BACK-TO-BACK Reigning Tatts Finke Desert Race champion Toby Price went backto-back in June after a dominant performance saw him lead the famous event from start to finish. Right from the get-go, Price was a man on a mission and steered his Red Bull Mitsubishi TSCO-built Trophy Truck to Method Race Wheels Prologue victory and down to Finke in record time, before cruising his way back to Alice Springs to secure his second King of the Desert title on four wheels. Crossing the finish line in second place a further two minutes behind Price was Aaron James, who made

the voyage solo again in 2022, while Brent Martin and Ben Dawson rounded out the podium. While both crews put in an impressive performance, the weekend truly belonged to Price, who alongside Jason Duncan, made history with his eighth victory. “We’re stoked and it was a good run back,” Price said. “We didn’t push, we didn’t do anything crazy, I just can’t thank my crew enough for all their efforts. “We had a really good run yesterday, and the hardest part is that you don’t

know what’s going on behind you. You push really hard, and the boys have done a great job with the truck… everything has turned out really good.”

Although Price made it look easy, the event proved a challenging battle with many crews failing to finish, which highlighted the difficult nature of the historic desert race. There were plenty of big names from the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championships (AORC) who failed to finish the event, including Josh Howells, Shane Elphinstone and Matt Hanson – the latter of which barely made it through Prologue.

Finishing in seventh place for the event was Jake Swinglehurst, who moved to the top of the AORC standings, courtesy of championship leader Ryan Taylor losing lots of ground due to multiple tyre failures on the way down to Finke.

Capitalising on the exits of multiple high-profile crews were the likes of Shannon and Ian Rentsch, the six-time Finke champion finishing fourth ahead of young gun Tyler Owen and another multiple Finke winner in Hayden Bentley.

As for the Class battles, Price understandably saluted in Extreme 2WD, while in Extreme 4WD it was an epic outing for Hayden Bentley who took out the class victory.

Pro buggy class honours went to Aaron James with his second outright, while Shannon Rentsch and Ian Rentsch enjoyed a welcome return to Finke with second in class, ahead of Tyler Owen and Max Owen.

It was a big weekend in the Prolite class, Martin’s outright podium saw him secure a hard-earned class win. For Production 4WD, Jodie Allen was the only classified finisher of the three entrants. While in Production 2WD, Chris Pickert was the fastest of all in class. The next round of BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off-Road Championship will be the Can-Am Loveday 400 on 29-31 July.

THIRD TIME’S THE CHARM FOR AORC AND LOVEDAY After three hectic rounds to the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC), crews turn their attention to one of the newer members to the calendar – the Can-Am Loveday 400.

Although Loveday didn’t welcome the country’s best off roaders in the past two years, it’s still run as the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Central Cup and put on quite the show for its attending teams and drivers.

It’s been a long time coming for event organisers after two COVID-19 stricken years prevented the South Australian event from being on the national stage following its inclusion in 2019.

However now that life has resumed to somewhat normal, the event will finally get its chance to enjoy the national spotlight and organiser Tony Whateley was looking forward to finally welcoming the nation’s best crews.

“We have had a couple of false starts in the past two years but have still been lucky enough to have a number of very talented crews compete in each year,” Whateley said. “However, we’re excited by the prospect of having all the very best in the country come to our neck of the woods and experience the course that the team has worked very hard in putting together.

“This is truly a race for the spectators as fans will have fantastic vantage points of most of the track from the comfort of the Tavern – the course even goes right past it, so there should be some loud and loose moments.

Taking place at the end of this month at Loveday Adventure 4×4 Park, the round will run as a three-day event with crews to tackle 10 laps of the 40 kilometres throughout the weekend.

“We have had two successful years of practice as part of the AORC Cups, but I am just really keen to have the rest of Australia experience the event and we’re expecting quite the spectacle.”

Beginning on the Friday with Prologue, crews will then complete the 10 laps across five to six sections over the Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to the AORC, the KINCROME SXS Motorsport Australia Championship will once again be in full flight and participating

QUEENSLAND NEXT STOP FOR HISTORIC SEDANS TOUR Following a massive round at the Mallala Historics earlier this year, the Historic Sports Sedans will be looking for another weekend to remember at its next appearance.

Forming part of a bumper schedule in the popular Queensland Historics, the series has been going from strengthto-strength as of late and will likely welcome another large entry list. The previous outing saw 21 cars do battle throughout the race meeting, which was won overall by Simon Pfitzner in the exThompson/Fowler Chev Mercedes after he took out all three races. Although the clean and drama-free racing itself was impressive, the race

meeting’s largest entry list of drivers from around the country was just as notable with West Australian Dick Ward in the rotary powered Fiat Arbarth and Glenn Gerstell from Queensland in the ex-USA ISMA RX7 the pick of the bunch.

Boasting a strong history in the category, Hodges enters the round as one to watch as he is the current lap record holder at Morgan Park for Group U and has improved the car since with his main goal to on breaking his own record.

Turning its attention to this month’s Queensland based round at an event just as popular as the Mallala Historics, the entry list will be rock solid.

Full of classic cars from yesteryear, fans can watch the series live as part of the Queensland Historics at Morgan Park on 8-10 July.

Pfitzner once again leads the way, while he will have plenty of competition from the likes of Carey McMahon, who will be steering the Ex Whincup Monza and Aarron Hodges in the ex-Garry Ford V8 powered Escort.

NEW QR SHINES IN OPENING DAY PARTY The new and improved Queensland Raceway was officially open to the public earlier this month with a free family-friendly Open Day.

Hot Laps, which saw Craig Lowndes behind the premiere sports car.

Taking place over one jam-packed day, the event celebrated the reopening of the Ipswich based circuit and featured a mixture of on track action, pit walks and other activations, all of which helped raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities South East QLD.

Lowndes wasn’t the only high-profile name in attendance, with former Repco Supercars Championship teammate Jamie Whincup, current Supercars driver Todd Hazelwood and legendary Australian Touring Cars Champion Dick Johnson amongst the guests, while popular TV personality Grant Denyer hosted multiple activations.

Making up the track activity included the Hot Wheels Stunt Team, time comparisons, demonstration laps, Superbikes, V8 and drift experiences and multiple Aston Martin Vulcan

Officials also enjoyed time in the spotlight with the Queensland Motor Racing Officials Association and the Queensland Fire and Rescue Club both present at the event.

Put on by new owner and prominent motorsport veteran Tony Quinn, the day was a resounding success with hundreds of people attending. Since taking over in November last year, Quinn has invested more than $10 million to renovate the circuit, having put the funds towards the Paddock and Pit Lane Garages, Spectator viewing areas, disabled access, the Control Tower, the Café and the restrooms. Spectators were the biggest winners from the takeover with three new viewing decks and a brand new corporate suite part of the renovations.

Following on from the day, Quinn was thrilled with the reaction of all attendees. “It was a resounding success and a great day was had by all. We raised a significant amount for a great cause and my personal highlight was reopening the Dick Johnson straight with the man himself,” Quinn said. "Queensland Raceway was first opened in 1999 through the efforts of local enthusiasts and the QLD State government of the time. It is safe to say not a lot has changed at the venue since it was first opened. “The entire facility needed a complete overhaul. The equipment, buildings, track surface and grounds had been unloved for 10+ years, & it showed. "The QR team has worked incredibly hard the last eight months and they had a blast seeing the look on spectators' faces checking

“It was a great way to say ‘Welcome to Queensland Raceway’” out the updated facilities. Motorsport Australia’s newest Esports series has officially opened with entries for the 2022 iRacing Asia Pacific Single Seater eSports Qualifier Series now being accepted. Scheduled to take place in August, the three-round competition serves as a standalone series which will determine Australia’s representatives at the Asia Pacific Formula Digital Series run by Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India. With only 20 spots up for grabs, interested participants will have to register their place in the series and set their best lap time during a pre-qualifying process run between 16 to 19 July. The fastest 20 drivers selected will then take part in August’s qualifying series, with the eventual winners having the opportunity to compete on the international stage, which will be held across three events in September and October.

While July’s pre-qualifying sessions will see competitors behind the wheel of a Dallara F3 at the famous Sandown International Raceway, the official qualifier series will take place at a combination of Australia’s finest circuits and an international track. Drivers will again be in a Dallara F3 for the series and will race at Phillip Island and Mount Panorama in the opening two rounds before racing at the iconic Suzuka Circuit in Japan. Each round will comprise of a onehour practice session, a 15-minute open qualifying session and a 40-minute race – all of which will be broadcast by SimSpeed TV. ELECTRIC VEHICLE REGULATIONS RELEASED Motorsport Australia has published new regulations, specific to electric vehicles.

The regulations outline various technical and safety requirements for competitors, officials and event organisers. Motorsport Australia will also host information sessions for officials and event organisers to cover off key details and answer any questions about the new regulations. Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport Michael Smith said the regulations were an important step in allowing more electric vehicles to compete in the sport across the country. “Whether it be international, national or grassroots events, there is a clear indication from manufacturers that electric vehicles are going to be a big part of our future, both in every day driving and in turn, we will see more electric vehicles in motorsport,” Smith said.

“Motorsport Australia is well aware of the importance of being ready to welcome those electric vehicles which present different safety and technical requirements to the traditional internal combustion engine.

“This is just a small step on the journey and from the Board down we are committed to ensuring we focus on making sure our sport is sustainable, safe and keeping up with current trends.

“There is a clear indication from manufacturers that electric vehicles are going to be a big part of our future”

“We also know that traditional petrol engines have a future in our sport and will continue to be part of our events for many years to come.”

“These regulations are a starting point for those wishing to have electric vehicles be part of their event and highlight specific requirements for competitors, officials and event organisers.

MAWSON CLAIMS BACKTO-BACK GOLD STARS Joey Mawson enjoyed another successful season in the S5000 Australian Drivers' Championship having claimed back-to-back Motorsport Australia Gold Stars.

With the series having its season finale as part of last month’s Merlin Darwin Triple Crown at Hidden Valley, Mawson didn’t have much success across the three races, but had done enough in the previous four rounds to put himself in the box seat for consecutive titles. Qualifying for the final round in fifth place, Mawson made up a position in the opening race of the weekend to finish fourth, before reaching the chequered flag sixth in the second race, which gave him an unassailable lead for the Championship.

Unfortunately, he was hit behind by Tim Macrow in the final race and was forced to retire, allowing Aaron Cameron to win the race and the final round. However, it did little to dampen Mawson’s spirits as he became just the ninth driver in Australian history to successfully defend an Australian Drivers' Championship. In what was a season of ups and downs, the New South Welshman was too good throughout the year as he claimed five wins, two of which were feature races, a further three podiums and two top five placings across the five rounds. Despite a tough end to the season, Mawson was thrilled to win the title and help the Adelaide-based

Team BRM take out its recordbreaking ninth Gold Star. "It feels amazing. We had one objective this season which was to go backto-back," Mawson said post-race. "We’ve had a few ups and downs this season, we didn’t start out on the best foot in Tasmania in that incident with Sladey, and we had to play catch up from there. "To be a part of history is amazing, it means a lot to me, especially being able to do it here in my own country. It’s very special to have my mum and dad and a few friends here. I can’t believe it’s happened again and I can’t wait for it to properly sink in. "I remember going into the Grand Prix weekend, my team boss Mark Rundle

told me, the weekend is going to make or break the championship. With all the extra cars we were either going to win a lot of points or lose them. We had to make sure we were on it. TEN MORE YEARS OF GRAND PRIX Motorsport Australia welcomed June’s exciting news regarding the contract extension for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix which sees the event remain in Melbourne for years to come.

In light of the Victorian Government’s announcement of a 10-year extension of rights to host the event until at least 2035, Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser believed the announcement highlighted the strength of the event, the sport and those who made it possible. 46 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

BATES SECURES CLEAN SWEEP OF LAUNCESTON Harry Bates continued his dominant run in the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship last month with a perfect victory in the Shannons Rally Launceston.

Harry enjoyed a number of clean runs and had comfortably victories in all but one stage - an off on the third stage of the second heat seeing him only just beat Lewis by less than one second.

With Coral Taylor calling the notes after the late withdrawal of John McCarthy, Bates proved just too good for the 18-car ARC field as he steered his Toyota GR Yaris AP4 to a clean sweep of stage wins, and maximum points in the EROAD Power Stage.

Other than that moment, it was a perfect weekend for the reigning ARC champion, who helped Taylor win her 34th ARC event.

Taking out second place outright was Shamrock Haulage’s Richie Dalton and Dale Moscatt, while the second Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia Toyota GR Yaris AP4 of Lewis Bates and Anthony McLoughlin rounded out the podium.

“It was a very strong weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed it,” Bates said.

HEAT 1 TOP 5

In the first heat, it was Dalton and Moscatt who would take out second spot, after a horror morning of issues to Lewis and McLoughlin forced them to play catch up in the afternoon.

One of the most impressive performances for the weekend though belonged to local star Eddie Maguire, who alongside Zak Brakey, steered his Mitsubishi Evo 9 to victory in both the White Wolf Constructions ARC Production Cup and the Motorsport Australia Tasmanian Rally Championship in both heats.

Fortunately, they were able to make it as high as fourth, with Taylor Gill and Kim Bessell receiving two penalties for early check-ins and a nasty crash to Tom Clarke and Ryan Preston ending their rally prematurely.

It was a similar story in the Shamrock Haulage ARC 2WD Cup and the Glendun ARC Junior Cup as Ryan Williams and Brad Jones put in faultless performance to win both competitions in both heats.

HEAT 2 TOP 5

Finishing ahead of Lewis was a consistent Troy Dowel and Bernie Webb with the youngster enjoying his highest career heat finish.

The championship switches from cold Tasmania for the sunshine state, with the Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland taking place in Gympie on 22-24 July.

Although Harry was dominant on both days, the battle for minor positions was far more intriguing.

In Heat 2, there would be no mistakes from Lewis again as he marched on to a well-deserved runner-up finish ahead of Dowel - solidifying an outright podium. Although Dalton made multiple mistakes on Sunday, he was able to nurse himself through the final stages to finish fourth and the podium.

ARC A WELCOME RETURN FOR GYMPIE The Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland finally returns this month and while there was less of a wait between visits to Gympie as opposed to other rounds, there has still been a nervous energy in the event’s organising committee.

Extreme rain and floods caused plenty of uncertainty in the first half of the year, but that looks to be a thing of the past as the town is ready to welcome back the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC). Taking place at the end of July, the two-day sprint rally will see Australia’s best crews complete 179 competitive kilometres over 14 stages. In addition to the nation’s best battling it out, the Acworth Recruiting

Motorsport Australia Queensland Rally Championship and the Virtual Security Novice Series will also be running in conjunction.

Starting on the Saturday, crews will tackle 91 competitive kilometres over eight stages, while the remaining six stages and 88 competitive kilometres will run on the Sunday.

Before the action gets underway on the Saturday morning though, there will be the special Wheels on Mary Festival on the Friday, which will see the town’s Mary Street closed down to showcase the cars and crews. Event Clerk of Course Brian Everitt was pleased the event could happen despite multiple flooding disasters plaguing the area earlier this year.

TARMAC RALLY WORKING GROUP MEMBERS NAMED The Australian Rally Commission (ARCom) has appointed several members to a special Tarmac Rally Working Group to help provide further advice on sporting rules and regulations.

The Tarmac Rally Working Group has been meeting in recent months to discuss a number of issues, with the ultimate aim of providing advice to ARCom about the rules, regulations and the implementation of any recommendations already made by the 2021 Investigatory Tribunal.
