WOMEN MAKE HISTORY WITH SENIOR MOTORSPORT APPOINTMENTS
With International Women’s Day on 8 March, a number of women will be working in high profile official positions at events throughout this month. Jessica Nicholson, Felicity Wood, Kaye Callander and Danielle Meyn will all be in their respective hot seats as officials this month after being recently appointed in roles. Nicholson’s continued development as a Motorsport Australia official has taken a major step forward after she was appointed as the Toyota Gazoo Racing 86 Series Race Director. In being selected as the 2022 Toyota Gazoo Racing 86 Series Race Director, she becomes the first woman in Australia to ever hold the Race Director role at a national level. Nicholson enters the role as a highly experienced official with plenty of experience having worked across a large number of events and categories. It isn’t the first time she has made history, after she was appointed Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Deputy Race Director in 2020 – the first women to hold that role at the time. Having spent countless hours over many years volunteering and building her skillset at Wakefield Park and Sydney Motorsport Park – Nicholson has shown her leadership, management and knowledge make her the perfect appointment to the Race Director role.

Her ability was further illustrated at the six-day motorsport extravaganza at Mount Panorama last year as part of the Bathurst 1000 – where she was heavily involved with four different categories – including the 86 Series itself.
“It’s nice to graduate once again. I am so excited because I have a really good team of people around me, like Glenn Pincott, and a really good category, so I am looking forward to working with them,” Nicholson said. "Although I didn’t get as many rounds as I would have liked in the Carrera Cup due to travel restrictions, I still thoroughly enjoyed my time there and I learnt quite a bit being part of the Porsche. "However, the real opportunity to flourish came at the Bathurst 1000 where I was able to be Deputy Race Directory for four categories and I think that played a major role in my selection. "It was also amazing because it boosted my confidence too. I worked so hard for those six days and did the best I could do, so to be rewarded with this position as Race Director was quite pleasing. “I think I am ready. I am obviously a bit nervous, but I have had a taste of what I will be doing and I have some familiarity with the
category and the individuals in it, so I know what I am in for.”
there. Hopefully it inspires others to pursue something similar.”
Confirmed to work alongside Nicholson as the 86 Series Technical Delegate for the series will be Wood, who also becomes the first woman to hold that particular role at a national series.
The series gets underway early this month as part of Supercars’ season opener at Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight and Callander will be another woman making history at Sydney Motorsport Park that weekend – her recent appointment as Clerk of Course making her the first woman to hold that position at a Supercars event.
“I am very excited to work with Felicity,” Nicholson added. “Both of our appointments are important for other women because it shows that there is a pathway for them to progress and they just need to put in the time and get the experience.
“I worked so hard and did the best I could do, so to be rewarded with this position as Race Director was quite pleasing”
“I like being a role model and comfortable at being one too. And this is where I wanted to get to with my motorsport career and I am so proud to know that I am actually
Meyn was originally in line to take on the role last year when she was appointed as Bunnings Trade Perth SuperNight Clerk of Course, the event’s cancellation meant she would have to wait longer to get that opportunity. However she has still been busy and has also progressed through the system, having secured the role of Deputy Race Director for the Supercheap TCR Australia Series. Having missed out on the series’ first round in Tasmania last month due to border restrictions, Meyn will finally get her chance to sit in race control for the series at this month’s Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships in Phillip Island. The West Australian won’t be the only women in action there, with another woman Trisha Davidson already serving as the series’ steward. Davidson herself boasts an impressive resume after she was the first female to serve as a Series Steward to a national category when appointed as a steward for the TGRA86 Series from 2016 until 2021 before making the switch to TCR for this year. International Women’s Day takes place on Tuesday 8 March and to celebrate, motorsport.org.au will be releasing a series of stories throughout the week.

NATIONAL SPEED AND AUTO TESTS LOCKED IN The dates for 2022 Motorsport Australia Speed and Auto Test Championships have been confirmed.
the one-day Motorsport Australia Supersprint Championship at its home at Sydney Motorsport Park.
All four events are scheduled to take place in the latter half of the year on four separate weekends, allowing competitors plenty of time to dust off the cobwebs and prepare accordingly.
The final Championship event of the year will be the Motorsport Australia Hill Climb Championship, which takes place on the following weekend.
The first event to get the Speed and Auto test season underway will be the Motorsport Australia Khanacross Championship, which will be hosted by the Southern District Car Club SA and will take place on 10-11 September at the Mid Murray Motorplex.
“It’s been a difficult two years but I am confident all four events will go ahead this time around”
The remaining three events will take place in October with the Motorsport Australia Motorkhana Championship, run by the Holden Sporting Car Club of Queensland, to be held on the first weekend of the month at Willowbank Raceway in Ipswich. Two weeks later, the Australian Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) will hold 6 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport and Commercial Operations Michael Smith was pleased the dates could be locked in. “It’s been a difficult two years but I am confident all four events will go ahead this time around with the COVID situation looking much better as opposed to 2020 and 2021,” Smith said.
“I must pay credit to all four clubs hosting each event for their patience and their ability to be flexible in organising the dates for each championship. “It’s going to be a busy little period around September and October and I am looking forward to seeing how each Championship transpires.”

DAVIES ENJOYS TOUGH WIN IN GOLD COAST KHANACROSS 8 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
The Gold Coast Tweed Motorsporting Club (GCTMC) held its first event for the year last month as 26 competitors took part in the Tamborine Khanacross. With the event seeing competitors getting six runs on the various courses and every run adding to a final accumulated score, it was Mark Davies in his BMW who ended up coming away with victory after a strong performance throughout the day.
Setting the benchmark as the driver to beat, Davies ended up winning four of the six runs, with the last two runs equally shared with eventual runnerup Terry Sposton in his Nissan GTiR. Third place outright was the reward for a sensational drive put in by junior driver Elijah Hewett in a Mirage. Elijah set the overall fastest time on the last run. While there were plenty of exciting battles going on in the outright Photos: CH Images/Jack Marning
competition, the event was also targeted at young junior drivers as a way to ease them into motorsport. Seven of the nine junior entrants were involved in the junior short course section of the event and it was young Joshua Golato who comfortably took out the win. The GCTMC offers a family atmosphere and the ability for drivers as young as twelve being able to compete means the whole family can participate.
The club offers the use of its own vehicle (and helmets) and the youngest drivers have an instructor with them at all times. Motorsport Australia’s Introductory Licences’ are a great avenue for first timers to try out the fun of a Khanacross event.

MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA STATE AWARDS SUCCESS The 2021 Motorsport Australia State Awards, presented by Shannons Insurance, have been completed with hundreds of state champions, officials and volunteers all recognised for their stellar seasons in 2021.
The presentations also featured speeches from each State Council Chair, as well as from Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser, who was proud of the collection of virtual presentations.
Throughout February, six virtual presentations hosted by Cameron van den Dungen were broadcast via Motorsport Australia’s website, celebrating the winners of each state.
“It was great to see all the many champions of 2021 from around the country receiving the recognition they deserve after winning their state titles,” Fraser said.
In addition to the celebration of last year’s winners, volunteer officials and administrators also got their time in the spotlight as each presentation announced Service Award winners and the prestigious State Officials of the Year, rewarding individuals for their dedication to the sport.
“I was also really pleased to see so many officials and volunteers celebrated for their contributions to the sport, because as we know, this sport wouldn’t be possible without them.
From those who make motorsport happen to the organisations who give people a platform to compete – clubs were also honoured throughout each virtual presentation.
“I was really pleased to see so many officials and volunteers celebrated for their contributions to the sport”
Whether it was acknowledging those joining Motorsport Australia for the first time, those celebrating major milestones or clubs being rewarded for running the best event in the state, all made a measurable contribution to our sport.

“To have the State Awards go ahead is a fantastic effort. Although it would have been nice for each state to hold them in person, the current climate made it difficult for them to run smoothly.
“With that said, I think that the virtual presentations were a resounding success and a big thank you must go out to all the people who provided acceptance speeches, as well as those who nominated the deserving recipients. Thank you also to Shannons Insurance as the presenting partner of the awards and a loyal partner of Motorsport Australia. “Congratulations to all the different champions and award winners from

“Although having the event in April is a bit later than previous years, it will be happening just two weeks after the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix which makes for a busy month of motorsport – something we have been missing in the past two years. “The National Awards, presented by our friends at Shannons Insurance, is a fantastic way to acknowledge the many individuals who contribute to the sport both on and off track, so it’s great that we will be able to do so in a COVID safe way this year. “Also having four individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame will make the night a huge celebration of our sport.”
Chairman of the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame Garry Connelly said the combined event would provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate the contributions of four worthy inductees. “We look forward to welcoming four new inductees to the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame who have contributed so much to the sport we all love,” Connelly said. “Since its inception in 2016, the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame has celebrated and applauded a number of the sport’s greats and we can’t wait to highlight and share the successes of the newest members in April together with the Motorsport Australia National Awards.”

MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA AND AUDIKA TEAM UP TO DRIVE AWARENESS OF HEARING CARE
Leading hearing care provider Audika announced a new twoyear partnership with Motorsport Australia earlier this month, aimed at driving awareness of hearing care for motorsport competitors and officials. Launching in Hearing Awareness Week (1-7 March 2022), the partnership will educate and provide Motorsport Australia members with information on the importance of hearing care, and how and why to have their baseline hearing checked. Audika’s Marketing Director Stephan Gervois said the partnership was an obvious fit, given the importance of maintaining regular hearing care in the sound-filled environment of motorsport. “Audika is proud to partner with Motorsport Australia to raise awareness on the importance of hearing care for its members,” Gervois said. "We hope that launching this partnership during Hearing Awareness Week helps spark conversation about the importance of hearing care in the motorsport community. Timely action is needed to prevent and address hearing loss. “When Motorsport Australia members visit an Audika clinic, they can expect same-day results from their hearing test and expert advice on next steps with hearing care solutions.” 20 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

EROAD POWER STAGE TO SHINE IN 2022 The Power Stage will return to this year’s RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship, with EROAD, a provider of Fleet telematics solutions, to sponsor the final stage of each round. The return of the EROAD Power Stage in 2022 follows its successful implementation in 2021 at both the Netier National Capital Rally and Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland.
“EROAD Power Stage is a popular concept and one we are looking forward to consolidating in 2022” A shorter, quick fire shootout with bonus points on offer for the winner of that specific stage, the EROAD Power Stage has the potential to have an impact on the overall result. Crews run in a reverse top 10 order, with the quickest driver of the rally given the challenge of beating the time set by those who put everything on the line for the bonus points. Motorsport Australia’s Director of Motorsport & Commercial
Operations, Michael Smith thanked EROAD for their support. “The EROAD Power Stage is a popular concept and one we are looking forward to consolidating in 2022, after only two rounds were possible last year,” Smith said. “To have EROAD on board as the naming rights partner for this stage is an exciting prospect and another vote of confidence in the growing RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship. We sincerely thank the EROAD team for their support. “EROAD’s impressive technology will also be an important tool for our rally events, with event organisers to use EROAD’s equipment to help keep track of officials and other key personnel spread out across the various stages of a rally.” EROAD’s General Manager of Australia Konrad Stempniak said the organisation was proud to partner with the ARC. “We’re excited to be supporting this year’s RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship as the naming rights partner for the EROAD Power Stage. EROAD exists to make our roads safer and more sustainable – and we know that safety is critical to motorsport. If all drivers took safety on the road as seriously as these guys do, we’d have far fewer accidents on our roads,” Stempniak said.
“EROAD’s technology helps fleet managers, drivers and even event organisers to manage and track their fleet from anywhere at any time – even in the most remote locations. The in-cab GPS device is also a great tool to help drivers to improve safety and reduce driving costs, by providing real-time alerts. “We think EROAD is a great solution for motorsport teams, given the travel and logistics involved in competing at a national level in particular. “We watched last year and know that this year’s EROAD Power Stage will be even better, and with a full season just around the corner, we can’t wait to show our support at the opening round in Canberra.” Round one of the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship, the Netier National Capital Rally, takes place on 1-3 April in Canberra. Broadcast details for the 2022 season will be announced very shortly, including plans for the EROAD Power Stage coverage.

WA SPEED SERIES SIZZLES IN SEASON OPENER The 2022 Motorsport Australia WA State Speed Series got underway last month as more than 50 competitors attended Collie Motorsport for a double round supersprint. With a number of the series’ heavy hitters taking part in the weekend, the competition was fierce throughout both days as participants got multiple attempts of the longer course on day one and the shorter course on day two. There was plenty of drama to happen on the first day of the season as former champion Marcel Every
had catastrophic engine failure after just one run, while extreme temperatures of 40 degrees saw a number of drivers pull out. When it came to the action, the season continued in similar fashion to how much of last year went with reigning champion John Webb edging out Ray Ferrari to claim top honours. Although he broke a personal best time in the process, the win didn't come easy as his fastest lap ended up being less than six hundredths of a second ahead of Ferrari, who came extremely close to snatching the victory. Rounding out the podium with a lap time almost two seconds slower than Ferrari was Cosi Sorgiovanni despite having to deal with his Dallara blowing a lot of smoke late in the day. For the second round on the following day, Sorgiovanni pulled out early to avoid any major damage to his car, giving Ferrari and Webb confidence of repeating the efforts. However, neither ended the day with the win as Peter Morley produced a mighty effort to take out top honours. Like Every, Ferrari had major engine drama during the day, forcing the Speads F1000 pilot to pull the pin

POLARIS JOINS AORC FAMILY FOR 2022 The BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) will welcome a new partner this year, with Polaris throwing its support behind the championship for 2022.
As the inaugural founding sponsor of the SXS Motorsport Australia Championship in 2015, the inclusion of SXS into this year’s AORC’s six rounds will now see Polaris partner both championships. An international leader in power sports and off-road innovation, Polaris is an Americanbased manufacturer of motorcycles, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles.
“Polaris is a brand that is synonymous with off road racing not just in Australia, but around the world, so to have them involved this year is a vote of confidence in our national off road championships,” Smith said. “They have been heavily involved with the KINCROME SXS Motorsport Australia Championship for quite some time, but with SXS incorporated into the AORC now, it will be great to see Polaris featured in 2022 and we thank them for their support.”
“We have great respect for each other and Polaris have been great contributors over the years”
Many off road crews around the world utilise Polaris’ UTV buggies for competition, including Australia, where the most notable drivers are Simon and Jackson Evans, both of whom have been national SXS champions in recent years and currently compete in the AORC. Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport and Commercial Operations Michael Smith was pleased to have Polaris join the AORC family in addition to its ongoing support of SXS. 26 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
KINCROME SXS Motorsport Australia Championship founder Sam Beck was thrilled to have Polaris continue backing the SXS championship. “We have great respect for each other and Polaris have been great contributors over the years,” Beck said.
“Even with the change of schedule and formats, they have continued to back us, so to have them jump for another year goes to show that they believe in the product that we, along with the AORC, are producing. “A big thank you must go out to the team at Polaris for their continued support.”
Polaris Australia & New Zealand Marketing Manager Kris Matich is excited for what 2022 has in store for both championships. “Polaris is proud to be associated with the 2022 KINCROME SXS Motorsport Australia Championship," Matich added. "We congratulate Motorsport Australia for their ongoing evolution of the Championship, this year to be included as part of the AORC, which is a positive step to expose this fantastic form of motorsport to a much wider audience. “This is a true national series with events across six states in eight months and combined with the AORC these events are truly presenting SXS racing in the very best environment. “We look forward to seeing the number of competitors grow off the back of this significant evolution of the SXS Championship.” The 2022 BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship and KINCROME SXS Motorsport Australia Championship begins with the Cobb & Co Hotel St George 399 on 18-20 March.

FIA ISSUE PREEVENT SAFETY CHECKLIST
The FIA has released a new checklist for drivers and codrivers for pre-event checks before competing in any practice, race sessions or rally stages. Included in the checklist are the use of balaclavas, helmet visors/straps, frontal head restraints and harnesses.
PRE-EVENT CHECKLIST Before taking part in any on-track session competitors must: • •
Arm the plumbed-in fire extinguisher system in case of electrical activation. Remove the Fire Extinguisher Safety Pin from the plumbed-in fire extinguisher system and handheld fire extinguisher before they enter a special stage or circuit.
2. Balaclava under the overall The neck, wrists and ankles should always be covered by at least two pieces of protective clothing. Competitors must ensure the fireproof balaclava must be tucked under the racing suit overalls to avoid direct contact with flames on the driver’s skin, and that the garments are not too tight as this reduces the level of protection.
3. Tighten the helmet strap It is important that the helmet chinstrap is properly routed and tightened at all times. The main protection that FIA Homologated helmets deliver is to the head and neck and this is only achievable if the helmet is properly tightened. If this is not the case it may come off the head during an accident and stop the safety applications working correctly.

▲ SYSTEM ARMED – READY TO BE USED ▼
1. Fire extinguisher system
SYSTEM WITH SAFETY PIN NOT READY TO BE USED
4. Full face helmet visor It is important to ensure the helmet visor remains properly closed and locked at all times to avoid the visor opening during an impact and the driver’s face being exposed to debris/flames.
5. Connect the Frontal Head Restraint Device Tether to the Helmet A Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) restrains the driver’s head during a frontal or angled-frontal impact, reducing the loads to the head and neck. To enable the FHR to work efficiently, the FHR tether must be connected to the anchorage points using the clips on both sides of the helmet at all times.
6. Ensure that the FHR device is positioned under the harness shoulder straps It is very important that the harness shoulder straps are over the FHR device to enable it to provide the correct protection. Below is a diagram for showing best practice for this installation.
7. Tighten the belts All straps of the safety harness must be connected properly to provide optimum protection in an impact. Studies performed by the FIA Safety Department have demonstrated that safety harness tension is important to reduce the risk of serious injuries and for the correct functioning of the Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) device.

MORTON AND NICOLI ENJOY IMPRESSIVE HIGH COUNTRY WIN The second round of the 2021/2022 Motorsport Australia TARGA Championship took place last month with Jeff Morton and Ben Nicoli winning in dominant fashion. As 70 competitors battled the picturesque roads of Mount Buller and surrounding areas such as Mansfield, Eildon and Whitefield, it was Morton and Nicoli who proved too strong all weekend, having led right from the get-go.

The duo couldn’t have asked for a better start to the popular threeday tarmac rally, having picked up wins in all six stages of the first leg. Their strong performance saw them take a 38-second lead over the second placed crew of Angus Kennard and Steve Glenney at the end of the first day. On day two, the outright leaders continued to build on their lead
and steered their Porsche GT2 RS to another four stage wins before they dropped their first for the event – finishing the 15km Galls Gap stage in second place just four seconds behind Trevor Macleod and Ian Wheeler. The TS15 second place was a minor hiccup for the overall leaders though, as they ended day two with another stage win and went into the final break with a handy one minute and 41 second lead over Kennard and Glenney.
Although Kennard and Glenney finished in second place, almost two and a half minutes behind the winners, they still got to enjoy a small win themselves, posting the equal fastest time on the day’s first stage.
“This is just a dream result and we are over the moon”
With just four stages run on the final day of action, Morton and Nicoli capped off a near perfect weekend with wins on every stage, eventually taking out the victory.
“We were here to enjoy this rally and we didn’t expect to be in the position we are in,” Morton told TARGA post event. “It’s also valuable testing for us ahead of TARGA Tasmania (April 26-May 1). There is no bigger test for a tyre than the Jamieson/Eildon stages. “This is just a dream result and we are over the moon.”
Rounding out the podium was Anthony Moss and Julie Hunter after the 2008 Mitsubishi Evolution X pilots moved up to third following the unfortunate retirement of Macleod and Wheeler on the opening stage of the final day.
In addition to their podium finish, Moss and Hunter also came away with the Early Modern 4 class victory – beating the outright fourth placed Jason and Fiona Wright driven 2008 Nissan GTR by one and half minutes. The final round of the 2021/2022 Motorsport Australia TARGA Championship is the 30th edition of the iconic TARGA Tasmania, which takes place around the apple isle on 26 April - 1 May.

EAST-JOHNSTON WINS ELECTRIFYING NSW MOTORKHANA OPENER The Westlakes Automobile Club held the first round of the Motorsport Australia New South Wales Motorkhana Championship last month, with all attendees treated to an epic finish. Taking place at the club’s home location in Awaba, the 35 competitors taking part in the season opener completed six tests with each time accumulating to a final time. A number of the country’s best drivers were running in the event and in the end, it was a multinational champion in Corrine-East Johnston who won the event with a combined time of 176.99 seconds. Despite the reigning champion winning the opening round, it was
hardly a walk in the park as she was constantly challenged by a number of individuals throughout the day. Remarkably, East-Johnston only won the second and fifth tests outright, however her consistency saw her edge out David Wykes by just one second in total. Comfortably winning the first test was Evan van Leeuwen before East-Johnston gained the lead after a strong second test. Wykes then snatched the lead from East-Johnston after winning the next two tests, however a one second test win on the fifth proved the major difference as EastJohnstone regained the lead. Although Wykes went fastest for the third time for the day on the final test, it wasn’t enough as a solid run on the test from East-Johnstone saw her take the win over the local Westlakes Automobile Club representative. Finishing a further one and half seconds behind in third was 2019 Australian champion Aaron Wuillemin, who edged out van Leeuwen by half a second after a huge fifth test where he went faster by two seconds.

Rounding out the top five was Tyler van Leeuwen, while club president Ben Semple finished sixth. The next round of the Motorsport Australia New South Wales Motorkhana Championship will again be organised by Westlakes Automobile Club at Awaba on Sunday 27 March.

continue to be limited to the existing recognised engine capacity limits, however this will change from 1 January, 2023 with the introduction of a new capacity limit of 7 litres for naturally aspirated petrol engines.
“After multiple discussions with a variety of different stakeholders, the AORCOM consensus was that the step to 7 litre would have plenty of benefits and could attract more people whose cars now meet the requirements.
With the change coming after consultation with the Australian Off Road Commission (AORCOM), the AORC won’t be the only competition to implement the increase, with 7 Litre engine capacities to be allowed at all off road racing events nation-wide.
“We are getting the news out there now so people can begin to plan accordingly and start working towards building these 7 Litre engines if they want.
Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith believed the move would have great benefits for the AORC and off road racing around the country. “We understood that there was a desire for the AORC to introduce more powerful cars and we’re pleased to be able to increase the engine capacity on some of these classes, which should certainly do that,” Smith said.
“It’s an exciting time for our sport at the moment and changes like this will mean that the sport can grow and align with other championships around the world. “While we’re really looking for to the change for next year, the focus will obviously be for 2022 and the exciting six-round season that we have coming up.”

"The 25 drivers standing here are among the best in the world. We
have two committed manufacturers and totally professional race teams. They are fighting for sheep stations. They are there to win.

PRICE’S EXTRAORDINARY STORY A new book detailing the career of off road legend Toby Price is now available to purchase online and in participating retailers.
Written with the assistance of awardwinning motorsport journalist Andrew van Leeuwen, “Endurance: The Toby Price Story” tells the extraordinary story of Price and his journey to becoming one of the most well respected and highly decorated motorsport competitors in the world.
gives a rare and exclusive insight into his career and all the adversity that he faced along the way.
Being tasked with the role of helping Price tell his story was van Leeuwen, who spent six months working on the book closely with Price. “It was a genuine honour when Toby approached me about working on this project with him, and although I had never written a biography before, I couldn’t think of anyone better I would rather have done it with,” van Leeuwen said.
“Although I had never written a biography before, I couldn’t think of anyone better I would rather have done it with”
The New South Welshman boasts an incredible record on twowheels with some of his accolades including twotime Dakar Rally victories, seven Tatts Finke Desert Race wins and an FIM World Rally Championship title.
Price has also proved quite a talented trophy truck driver, having finally won the Tatts Finke Desert Race as part of the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship last year after multiple podiums and DNFs in previous years. And with a potential career switch from bikes to cars on the cards for the legendary rider, the book
“When he was telling me the story, there were times I felt so lucky to have been chosen for this and it was an absolute pleasure to be able to learn and then share his career from top to bottom. “There are so many things to like about Toby and everyone who knows him feels the same way. He is this nice normal guy with an extraordinary amount of talent who has lived this extraordinary life. “I found there to be quite a few things I didn’t know about him, but one of the things I really found amazing about
him is that his life has been a series of accidents and setbacks that turned him from someone struggling to get a gig to becoming a KTM Dakar Rally legend. “It’s truly an inspiring story and a tale about overcoming adversity and small failures to find a way of succeeding in a way he never thought it existed.” Endurance: The Toby Price Story is out now and available for purchase from $22.

The 2022 BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) begins this month with the fifth running of the Cobb & Co Hotel St George 399. More than 90 crews from around the country are expected to make the trek out to the southeastern town for the popular race, which has gotten the AORC season underway every year since its inauguration in 2017. Known for its dusty and challenging conditions and the major highlights being the dams and Bakers’ Dozen, crews will experience a slightly different course this year after heavy rainfall

caused event organisers, the South East Queensland Off Road Association (SEQORRA), to move the course around. From an entry list point of view, there are some big names already entered in the event, including the grand return of the championship’s most decorated driver in Shannon Rentsch, Victorian
star Matt Hanson and crowd favourites Greg Gartner and Beau Robinson. Other notable entries are that of David Kermond and experienced circuit racer Warren Luff - the duo to represent leading motorsport outfit Walkinshaw Performance in its foray into off road racing.

Crews entering the AORC component of the event will complete four sections throughout the weekend, with one on Saturday following the morning’s Top 10 shootout and the remaining three on Sunday. Also running at the event will be a round of the Motorsport Australia Queensland Off Road Championship with state-only crews to tackle just three sections.
“It will accommodate SXS for the tight stuff and then the Trophy Trucks for the open flats where they can put the pedal to the metal”
Ahead of the race, SEQORRA President Kym Barber believed everything was on track for a big weekend. “I think the track will be in good shape when the event is held,” Barber said, “We have a lot of scrub sections and a lot of open areas, so I think
everyone gets a run at their own bits. It will accommodate SXS for the tight stuff and then the Trophy Trucks for the open flats where they can put the pedal to the metal. “We were at the course a couple of weeks ago and even though we had to organise a few changes, it’s all been checked off and the track has been finalised.
“The pits have been finished and we are now just trying to finish up the final parts. “It’s shaping up to be a really good event and our sponsors are excited. We got a lot of positive feedback last time so I have no doubt that everyone will enjoy it again.” The 2022 Cobb & Co Hotel St George 399 takes place in St George on 18-20 March.

SORRA ENJOYS LONG AWAITED RETURN TO MOTORSPORT The Sydney Off Road Racing Association (SORRA) held its first event in two and half years last month when it successfully ran a Day/Night Autocross at Colo Motorsport Park. It’s been a difficult period for the New South Wales based club who hadn’t run an event since October 2019, when bushfires ravished the state, destroying all the club’s machinery and infrastructure that had been built over the past 40 years. All attempts to hold events following the bushfires were unsuccessful as COVID-19 hit Australian shores before floods caused cancellations to the club’s round of the Motorsport Australia NSW Off Road Racing Championship last year. Finally, after two and half years, the club held an event with the assistance of Toyosports club members, which saw 20 competitors complete seven runs of the 1.6km gravel course, three of which were run forward facing and the remaining four in reverse – the last two being run in the dark. Ending the day with the fastest time outright was Subaru WRX pilot
Damien Abbott, his 35.345 second time two seconds faster than the next fastest driver and the winner of Class E in Stuart Fell, while rounding out the podium and finishing second in Abbott’s E+ Class was Spencer Leach – the Subaru driver’s best time less than two tenths slower than Fell. Other notable results saw Steve Cleaves and his Holden ute claim Class D silverware, Peter Bryant edge out the Ford Fiesta shared by Jordan Little and Timothy Kennet to secure Class A honours and Ruby Martin who won Class C in her Mazda 3. Clerk of Course Ian Irons was thrilled with the event and how it went and was grateful for all those who helped put it on. “It was fantastic to finally run an event after two and half long years,” Irons said. “There were many firsts for us that weekend. Not only was it the event first since October 2019, but also the first time running this sort of event and with the help of The Toyosports Club, it was highly successful. “A special thanks must be given to the Toyosports Club for the loan of its transponders and timing equipment and for the loan of Steve Cleaves and Tara Martin, who helped do the timing work. “I also have to say thank you to all the volunteers who played a part in the autocross both pre-event and during the event. We had great feedback and it was a great day enjoyed by all.

“We had 15 finishers who completed all runs and considering the conditions on the day, the number of finishers was outstanding. “Finally, a big thank you to all those who donated money, time and work to get Colo Motorsport Park rebuilt in readiness for all this. The event couldn’t have been done without you.” The next Sydney Off Road Racing Club event at Colo Motorsport Park will be later this month with a khanacross on Saturday 26 March, before the first off road event since August 2019 takes place on Sunday 27 March.
