RECORD CROWD TREATED TO SPECTACULAR AGP After more than three years since the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix was last completed, its return to Albert Park this year was more than appreciated.

And there was plenty of entertainment for that recordbreaking crowd, in addition to those watching from the surrounding apartment complexes.

Over the course of the weekend, 420,000 people passed through the gates, making it one of the biggest crowds at an international event in Australian sporting history.

From the exciting track action to the hundreds of cars on display and festival-like atmosphere– it was a weekend to remember for all the right reasons.

RICCIARDO IN THE POINTS AS LECLERC CHARGES TO CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD Following on from the tough two opening rounds, Daniel Ricciardo picked up his first points for the year, finishing sixth in the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix 2022. Having qualified P7, Ricciardo had a clean run off the start line and avoided any trouble.

have happened, I would have laughed sarcastically, so very happy with this progress,” Ricciardo said post-race. “After Bahrain I was still very positive and I knew we could make a turnaround. I didn’t think it would happen already, so for that reason, I’ll definitely take it.

“If you had told me in Bahrain this would have happened, I would have laughed sarcastically”

For much of the 58-lap race, he had a solid run as he trailed McLaren teammate Lando Norris and the duo were elevated to fifth and sixth respectively when reigning champion Max Verstappen's RB18 caught fire. The two stayed in those positions for the rest of the race as Ricciardo ended up with his best result for the year – a massive turnaround from the opening two rounds.

“P5 and P6 is still a massive result for us. If you had told me in Bahrain this would

“The weekend as a whole has been just smoother, smoother for all of us. And we’ve shown a lot more for it.

“If it does, then we probably have chances for the championship.” Behind the winner, Sergio Perez claimed second place and vital points for the Constructors' Championship, while Mercedes’ George Russell picked up his first podium for the season in third. There was no shortage of drama in all the event’s support categories either with the three support categories putting on a show for attending fans.

“The team result was mega compared to the last few.” Ahead of them, a dominant performance from Charles Leclerc saw the Ferrari star pick up his second win of the 2022 season after leading from lights out to the chequered flag. “We’ve got a very strong car, a very reliable car too and for now we’ve always been there so I hope it continues like this,” Leclerc said.

REPCO SUPERCARS CHAMPIONSHIP While there seemed to be a mixture of results during the Beaurepaires Melbourne 400’s four races, there was the familiar story with championship leader Shane van Gisbergen winning the Larry Perkins Trophy – despite a P20 in the last race.

S 5000 AUS TR ALIAN DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP Reigning champion Joey Mawson ended the weekend with top honours having won both the first race and the main feature on the Sunday morning. It was an impressive effort from the New South Welshman, who went from just beating Aaron Cameron in the first race to smashing the field in the feature race – more than five second separating he and Nathan Herne.

Herne himself had a good final outing and edged out Tim Macrow by just seven tenths of a second. In the reverse grid race on Saturday, only two laps were completed after a big collision between Zane Goddard and James Davison, which allowed Shae Davies to the win over Conor Somers and Blake Purdie.

P O R S C H E P AY N T E R C A R R E R A CUP CHAMPIONSHIP Max Vidau claimed top honours for the outright round at Albert Park despite not winning a race with Aaron Love finishing with a race to forget as he crossed the line last. Having enjoyed a perfect lead up to the finale with three wins from three races, Love started from pole but lost his place early as David Wall and Harri Jones passed the leader on the first lap – the latter charging from third to first. Love then had a collision with Luke Youlden and dropped down the order as a result, elevating Max Vidau to third - the South Australian winning the round as result.

OFFICIALS BACK IN FORCE Officials are the lifeblood of the sport and year-afteryear, continue to go above and beyond in helping the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix excel. Just like they did in 2020 when the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix was cancelled, again the 800 officials were again at Albert in force – many of whom had a different stories as to how they got there.

SAM AND THERESA

“We became fans through watching Drive to Survive and we thought it was cool opportunity. “We’re really excited to be here. We’re looking forward to doing the track walk and meeting other people who are passionate about the sport and learning from them.”

SETON

“I have been doing motorsport for a few years now and it's my first Australian Grand Prix. “The crowd being a sell-out and so many officials just goes to show how keen people are to get back to normal.”

ZOE

“I have been watching F1 since I was four-years-old and I remember watching Seb Vettel when he first started driving. I really want to get into the industry but I’ve learned it’s quite difficult so I decided to get some experience here and maybe move up the chain to be an actual official. “And it’s a big step for me. I feel a bit like a fish out of water but doing something like this without my parents has been a big adventure.”

GRAHAM

“I started wearing [the glasses] 14 years ago. I just thought why not. It stuck. People come up to me all the time and it’s good because people remember the glasses. It’s like a physical catchphrase. “I love being a firey. There is a lot of adrenaline that kicks in when there is an incident so I don’t feel any sore parts. But of course, the less we are used, the better.”

HEDRE

“Started to gain an interest in F1 in 2019 and I remember how all the officials were helping Romain Grosjean when he had that big crash in Bahrain. At that moment, I knew I wanted to help out at motorsport events like they did, so I decided that when the AGP came back. I would join as It would be a new experience.”

MOTORSPORT.ORG.AU 9

PAUL

“I’ve been an official for 30 years and a Sector Marshal for the last five or six years, but this will be my first at the AGP or an international event so I’m excited to tick another item off the box. “It’s so good to be back, in fact you don’t realise how much you miss being at Albert Park until you’re here on the Thursday morning.”

FELICITY AND MICHAEL “To be honest, we have really missed it. We were here in 2020 when it was cancelled so it’s great to get back out there again. “We come over from South Australia to the Grand Prix every year. We worked for many years in the national paddock before we were put in the F1 paddock. “Really, we just love motorsport and doing it together.”

GLEN

“It’s good to be back. I was there in 2019 and then in 2020 when it got cancelled. I am a volunteer firefighter for the CFA and one day I got an email asking if anyone was interested and then it all began. “Now that everything seems to be back to normal, we’ll hopefully get more opportunities to do more motorsport events throughout the year.”

FREN

“I think the sport has grown over the past few years. The Drive to Survive Netflix Series certainly made a big contribution to that. I got into the sport because of the show and I really love it. “Having been an official at the MCG for many years, I thought it was time to try a new experience which is why I am here.”

TRAVIS

“I just love being here. Being part of a big team and working together to help put this event on is great. Learning new skills is also great and something I have been able to do over the years. “One of my major highlights was a few years ago when Daniel Ricciardo sat next to me in the crane truck on the out lap a few years ago in one session, and then two hours later, we picked up again when his car stopped.”

SHAUN

“It’s my sixth year now and I have been itching to get back here because I just love motorsport. “My parents have been officials since they were about my age and then I grew into being official - I guess it was always going to be something I got into. But I keep doing it because the people you meet are great and you get closer to the cars.”

CLUB DEVELOPMENT FUND OPENS ROUND ONE INTAKE The deadline to take advantage of the Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund’s first round is fast approaching with clubs having until the end of this month to apply.

Established by Motorsport Australia to help grow membership and participation opportunities, the program has seen more than $100,000 distributed to affiliated clubs since 2015. Clubs are encouraged to take advantage of the initiative as it provides them with the opportunity to increase membership and event participation, as well as support facility projects. the club were able to build a new membership management system, which streamlined the membership processes and reduced the number of hours spent by volunteers on the manual processing of memberships. “The Club Development Fund was a big help because we were able to get a membership system that we desperately needed,” Club Secretary Brent Howard said. “Before we got it, we operated a manual based system with spreadsheets and it took many hours to keep track of annual membership renewals. “But with help of the funding, we were able to purchase the software system ‘Member Jungle’ which is quite cost effective and efficient and it allows us to send emails and track members whose licences have expired. It’s really versatile. “We used to operate on bank transfers or even accept cheques but that has now been eliminated.

“I would highly recommend clubs take advantage of the Fund and for those with 100 members or more, looking into the system.” Other examples of the successful applicants include the Sporting Car Club of SA getting funding for equipment to improve the safety of the Collingrove competition surface, under the Safety and Operational Equipment stream, while Townsville City Autosports Club created a completely new program called “Empowering NQ Women through Motorsport.” The initiative allows women and girls to experience the exciting world of motorsport through a range of areas including improving driving skills, learning to race or volunteering. “The funding certainly helped because it gave us the opportunity to create a bigger awareness in not only motorsport for women but also the club in general,” Townsville City Autosports Club President Laurna Love said.

“The assistance received from the Club Development Fund went to sponsoring day licensing and radio advertising which led to more media exposure and the increase of the club members. “We have had 10 girls aged under 21 join the club alongside with some of their male family members also joining, as well as four women in their 30s who have taken on officials roles. “As a result of the exposure, we received even more funding which we used to purchase a club car which is a big step for us as it should be able to help with the development of juniors.” The current intake of applications being accepted until Tuesday 31 May.

NEW WOMEN’S PROGRAM TO OPEN OPPORTUNITY FOR QUEENSLAND OFFICIALS Motorsport Australia has outlined its new Queensland based Women’s Officiating Pathway Program, which will officially begin at the end of this month. With the support of the Queensland Government, the Women’s Officiating Development Program aims to provide opportunities to 10 female club officials in Queensland and help them progress from club level officiating to working at state level and higher.

take part in a Zoom meeting on the evening of 7 June, where they will meet their mentor and other participants. The Zoom meeting will consist of a Q&A session with leading female senior officials and group discussions where participants will be encouraged to share what they hope to achieve from the program.

“The opportunity to work closely with an experienced mentor will be extremely rewarding and beneficial”

The successful candidates, who must hold either a General Officials or Bronze Level licence, will be selected from a pool of applicants and paired up with a suitable senior official who will help mentor them to move up the official ranks. Motorsport Australia encourages all women who qualify to consider entering the program – with applications being accepted until 27 May.

As part of the application process, successful applicants will be invited to

16 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

The meeting will also allow each mentor and mentee to build a relationship and identify the mentee’s officiating skills and knowledge of the sport in order to create an action plan and help them develop.

The program will continue throughout the remainder of the year, as each individual mentor will provide assistance to the mentee as they work together at various events. Interested applicants must note that the selection committee will be looking at goal setting, level of experience, availability to travel and for a variety of disciplines/roles when choosing the successful applicants.

Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca encouraged women from all around the state to apply for the program. “There are many talented women who officiate in the state but we want to be able to grow the number of senior officials across all roles and within all disciplines. A program like this can certainly help do that,” Arocca said. “I strongly recommend all women in Queensland who meet the required criteria to apply for the program. The opportunity to work closely with an experienced mentor will be extremely rewarding and beneficial. “I look forward to following the program and seeing the 10 enthusiastic and committed women officials progress throughout the year.” All expressions of interest must be submitted by 27 May, 2022. The successful applicants will be informed on 3 June and the introductory Zoom meeting will take place on 7 June.

MOTORSPORT IN THE MIX FOR VICTORIAN SPORT AWARDS Three representatives of motorsport have been named as finalists for the 2021 Victorian Sport Awards, which will take place in Melbourne next month. Held annually, the Victorian Sport Awards honour those who have made outstanding contributions to sport in Australia or internationally, either individually or for a team. The awards recognise athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers from both metropolitan and regional areas in Victoria. Current Alpine Formula 1 reserve driver Oscar Piastri and long serving Motorsport Australia volunteer officials Bruce Astbury and Lucy Hatton have been nominated for awards. 18 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

It was another trophy-laden season for Piastri in 2021, which was highlighted by the FIA Formula 2 Championship title where he dominated a number of the world’s most talented junior drivers with six wins and a further five podiums. The comfortable championship win was his third in as many years and saw him rewarded with a number of accolades, including these awards where he has been nominated twice. As the only individual to be nominated for two awards, Piastri was named as a candidate for both Young Athlete of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year and finds himself in the company of other outstanding sportspeople.

In the Male Athlete of the Year award category, Piastri is up against former wheelchair tennis champion Dylan Alcott AO and NBA stars Josh Giddey and Jock Landale. WNBA player Jade Melbourne, Paralympic medallist swimmer Col Pearse and rising table tennis star Nicholas Lum are the other Young Athlete of the Year nominees. Following her 2021 Motorsport Australia Service Award, Lucy Hatton has once again been recognised for her hard work as an official after being named as one of four Official of the Year nominees. Hatton had a very busy 12 months during 2021, despite the pandemic causing multiple lockdowns in Victoria. She played an integral part of

Motorsport Australia’s virtual development of officials, which included hosting an online bronze timekeeping training course.

“Although 2021 proved a difficult year for the state, it did not stop many people from going above and beyond in their chosen fields”

Like Hatton, Bruce Astbury was quite busy during the pandemic and has been nominated for the Volunteer of the Year award.

President of the Marque Sports Car Association of Victoria, Astbury was pivotal in navigating the club through the pandemic and was able to help run events last year when the state was open, as the club celebrated its 50th anniversary in style. Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca congratulated all three individuals on their nominations. “Although 2021 proved a difficult year for the state, especially in the

sporting world, it did not stop many people from going above and beyond in their chosen fields,” Arocca said. “To have three motorsport representatives nominated for awards celebrating every type of sport is a fantastic achievement and highlights how impressive our members’ contributions are. “These nominations underline motorsport’s popularity around the country and the quality of talent associated with Motorsport Australia – especially with two volunteer officials nominated.

“It is also very exciting to see Oscar’s rise up the open-wheel ranks being recognised and I know he would be incredibly pleased to be nominated with other influential and inspirational Australian athletes.

“Hopefully we will celebrate their success with the awards, however, their nomination alone is reward and recognition for their outstanding contributions to sport.” The Victorian Sport Awards gala dinner takes place at CENTREPIECE in Melbourne Park on 15 June.

PRIDE IN MOTORSPORT SHEDS LIGHT ON LGBTIQ+ IN MOTORSPORT On the eve of the record-breaking Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix, Motorsport Australia teamed up with Racing Pride and Proud 2 Play to hold a special event promoting LGBTIQ+ community in motorsport. Known as Pride in Motorsport, the event saw a number of motorsport personalities, who are also part of the LGBTIQ+ community, feature in a Q&A session where attendees could hear about their experiences in the sport. Making up the panel was Aston Martin driver ambassador Jessica Hawkins, Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1 Team representative Matt Bishop and Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN employee and FIA Girls on Track Australia Ambassador Krystina Emmanouilides. The trio spoke about their personal journeys in the sport as well as fielding questions from the strong turnout of attendees. Following on from the event, Emmanouilides, who also serves as one of the Racing Pride Directors, revealed how important these events are, as well as the Racing Pride movement. “No matter where we are, opening up a conversation about inclusivity is always going to have a positive impact,” Emmanouilides said.

20 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

“Racing Pride taking the stage with respected charities/organisations like Proud2Play and Motorsport Australia, helps promote a united stance for the promotion of inclusivity in our sport. “LGBTQ+ inclusion is important in all aspects of society, sports included . Motorsport has long been a sport where participants and fans were of a very narrow demographic. We must ensure that those who come after us are left with a more open and welcoming environment. “Racing Pride hopes to expand into Australia - it is part of our model to have a number of ambassadors from across the industry visibly represent Racing Pride and our ideals. I hope our presence in Australia will help others in the community to feel more comfortable in their environment to be visible. “We have had a huge amount of positive feedback from organisations that we’ve worked with, and also from individuals within those organisations. At the end of the day, if our work can help just one single person, it is valuable work.” Outside of the three panellists, Victorian Commissioner for LGBTIQ+ Communities, Todd Fernando was also in attendance and threw his support behind the initiative.

TRAVIS FAMILY WINS CLASSIC SWANSONG IN STYLE 22 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

After two years of cancellations and postponements, the Classic Outback Trial finally managed to go ahead in April with Bathurst based Andrew and David Travis taking out the victory. With 40 crews entered in the grueling 1700km long event, the son-father team dominated the seven days to claim a 15-minute victory – their fourth consecutive win of the popular event. Right from the starting stage in Parkes, the duo was on song, winning all but a handful of the 31 special stages as they steered their Nissan Gazelle through the Central New South Wales-based event to finish strongly in the final destination of Bathurst. Taking out second place after trailing the fivetime Classic Outback Trial champions for much of

fourth – the duo having charged up the field as the event went on.

Behind the wheel of a Datsun Stanza, the father-son team had a mixed weekend, having run into a shallow dam on the second day before making up for lost time with a string of strong results. Unfortunately the Stanza had brake problems on the penultimate day, which ruined any chance of a good result.

Rounding out the top five a further 11 minutes behind the Ford Escort RS1800 of Hills was the second fastest Stanza, which belonged to Victorian Joel Wald and co-driver Cathy Elliot.

Finishing in third place was South Australians Darkie Barr-Smith and Rob Hunt in a new Ford Capri Perana, while another New South Wales pairing of David Hills and Ben Richards finished

One of the most intriguing battles of the weekend was the one for seventh, which was won by Ford Falcon GT pilots Shane Attwell and David Moir after the duo crossed the finish line just three seconds ahead of Micahel Ward and Pete Hellwig in a Toyota Corolla.

African constructed Nissan Navarra and David and Stephen Gainer take out the regularity section of the Classic Outback Trial in their Datsun 240Z. The 2022 edition was the last ever running of the trial after Event Director Phil Bernadou called time on it and retired the event after 13 years.

Tony Wallis has won the second round of the Motorsport Australia SA Motorkhana Championship after an intense battle with Stuart Cotton. With the 37 entered cars tackling eight different tests across the day, it was Wallis who ended up taking out the victory despite Cotton finishing with a smaller total time. Cotton went faster on five of the eight tests compared to Wallis’ three, with the Morris Mini driver winning the opening three tests.

Following on from the event, championship organiser Sonya Flynn was pleased with how it went. “It was another fantastic round of the SA championships and a big well done to the Nissan Datsun Car Club for running such a great event,” Flynn said.

“I'm always in awe of the drivers we all love to watch”

Wallis then bounced back with three of his before Cotton went faster on the final two runs – finishing the event with a shorter accumulated time – almost one second separated the two. However with the addition of handicaps, Wallis waseventually handed a win of two seconds. Both drivers won their respective classes, Wallis (C) and Cotton (A), while Phil Wilson rounded out the podium and won the D class – making it three different drivers from three different classes. The next best-placed class winner was Craig Gordon in P10, who won Class E, while Class F winner Dave Beames finished in P11. A further two places below him was Jason Edwards – the MG TD driver, the fastest Class B competitor.

“Congratulations to all the outright winners and winners of class. I'm always in awe of the drivers we all love to watch - it's better to watch them drive than watch ballet in my opinion. “I also love to watch people having a go for the first or second time and if they love it, keep on having a go and improving no matter their age.

“I am looking forward to seeing them back out at Mallala for the next round in July.” Despite yet to win an event for the 2022 season, Cotton’s two runner-up finishes see him occupy the top of the state championship standings. It’s a bit of a break between the second and third round of the championship with the next round to take place at Mallala on 8 July.

WDCC ENJOYS 75TH BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH SPECIAL DINNER The Western District Car Club (WDCC) celebrated its 75th anniversary in style last month with a special dinner for 65 members from the past and present at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Formed in August 1946 in Geelong, the club came up with the name as many of the then-members were from the Western District of Victoria. Boasting a record for one of the oldest car clubs in Australia, the club has been in affiliation with Motorsport Australia for 67 years. The guest list featured many big names, including Ross Middleton, champion Co-Driver for Trevor Stanley Volvo, Tony Bond, 1968 London to Sydney Marathon driver Archie Hall, TARGA Tasmania class winner Graham Harrison and life member David Johns, who was a long-term rally competitor and Motorsport Australia Steward and course checker for many years.

While there was plenty to celebrate over the course of the evening, one of the major highlights was Ada River Rally director Brett Ross being presented the Motorsport Australia Victorian Motorsport Event of the Year for the second time. Having presented the award to Ross, President Andrew Caddy was thrilled with the evening and congratulated all members past and present. “It’s a marvellous achievement to celebrate 75 years and it was wonderful that we were able to celebrate it – even if it was a bit late,” Caddy said. “It was quite a special feeling having so many members from both the past and present in the same room - many of whom had not seen each other for more than 30 years - so we decided to give members the opportunity to share stories from the past rather than have a guest speaker. “To be able to reach an historic milestone like this is no easy feat and I want to pay tribute to all volunteers over the years who helped contribute to the club and get it to where it is now. “It’s also been fantastic to be affiliated with Motorsport Australia for so long and a big thanks to Eugene Arocca for providing a video message, which was played to attendees.”

RACING TOGETHER SEASON TWO OPENS UP Racing Together has opened up applications for a new group of recruits to join the innovative program later this month. The program will be holding an open weekend at its home base in Norwell Motorplex in the Gold Coast later this month with indigenous girls and boys aged between 12 and 17 encouraged to attend. Founded in 2020 by Garry and Monique Connelly, Racing Together was created to help indigenous youths get an insight into motorsport and make a potential transition into a career in the sport. In 2021, a 10-member all-Indigenous team was selected to build, maintain, prepare a Hyundai Excel and race it in the four-round Series X3 Queensland. The team enjoyed a successful run in the series as well as race on the national stage during Supercars’ Indigenous round at Hidden Valley in June. The inaugural season of Racing Together also proved successful in its original mission statement as three of the 10 participants gained employment in the automotive industry – two of which were for Supercars teams. Following on from its successful first year, the program is now seeking 32 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

candidates for season two and will select its next team from the open weekend later this month. During the weekend, aspiring participants will undergo a number of skill and aptitude tests, including driving on both the track and in a simulator, reaction and eye/hand coordination tests and mock interviews, as well as examinations on their mechanical knowledge, interest and ability. Roles such as mechanics, engineers, logistics, communications crews and tyre technicians will be chosen, while one individual will be selected as the team’s driver and another with high academic potential will be supported to study motorsport-related engineering. With the first season of the program proving a success, Garry Connelly AM believed it was the right time to build the team. "The benefits of the Racing Together program have been proven after the first season and we're ready to take the next steps,” Connolly said. “Our girls and boys have made a tremendous effort and been rewarded with success; for some it has changed their lives.

"We plan to add a second Hyundai to the team soon and we have other new projects in the pipeline in line with our ambition to make a difference to the lives of these young people and show them the potential for a motorsport career." The two-day intensive training, education and selection programme takes place at Norwell Motorplex on 21-22 May.

KELLY WINS MAC DIRT SPRINT OPENER IN THRILLER Daniel Kelly has won the first round of the Millmerran Auto Club’s Dirt Sprint Series in style after producing an event-winning run on his final attempt.

Tim Follington then enjoyed a superb effort on the next run, which was four seconds faster Elbug’s time, while Barry Clark was the only other driver to go under 2:20.

Taking place at the club’s Reserve Raceway in Millmerran, a huge field of 43 competitors contested the season opener with each getting up to seven runs of the course.

By run five, there were a few drivers starting to get in the mix with seven going sub 2:20 – the fastest of which was Keeley with a time of 2:16.26 that claimed the lead.

In what was an epic battle for the victory that saw four different lead changes, it was a day where anyone could have won, however Kelly ended up taking out top honours despite having never led throughout the day.

Keeley then went two and half seconds faster on the penultimate run to produce his best effort of the day – a 2:13.68 – a time he would have thought was enough to take the win as the next best driver in Ken Iseppi was almost two seconds off the pace.

Shane Keeley enjoyed the best start with the fastest time on run one, before he was pipped by Tony Elbug who went fastest on both run two and three – his 2:20.85 on the latter proving the benchmark.

With Keeley sitting out of the final run after giving everything he had, Kelly swooped in to snatch the victory courtesy of a 2:13.52 run. Adding insult to injury, Iseppi’s final run saw him

edge out Keeley for second place by just two hundredths of a second. Like Kelly, Michael McDonald saved his best effort for the final run, sneaking into fourth with a 2:14.78, while the battle for fifth proved one of the closest for the day as Clark rounded out the top five over Follington by just three hundredths. The next round of the Millmerran Auto Club Dirt Sprint Series will be on 15 May.

ROCKYNATS GOES BIG FOR SECOND YEAR RUNNING After a hugely successful inaugural event in 2021, Rockynats backed it up again with a bigger and better edition on the Easter long weekend as more than 1400 cars and bikes took over the streets of Rockhampton. With a record crowd of around 52,000 attendees passing through the gates over the course of the three-day event, spectators were treated to quite the spectacle of non-stop high-octane action.

Featuring across the three-days were a number of different disciplines including an entertaining Burnout Master championship and exhibitions for both drifting and drag racing - the latter of which saw 328 entrants produce a combined 1200 passes of the 1/8th mile down the riverfront strip. While there were less numbers running in the Burnout Master championship, the 93 competitors put on a masterclass for fans as they

lay down a total of 200 burnouts. Although the battle for victory was intense, Jake Myers in his 1966 Ford Mustang took out the Masters prize and 1973 Holden HQ driver Nathan Lewis won the outright competition. Outside of the competition itself, there were plenty of activations for fans to enjoy, headlined by the prestigious Show ‘n’ Shine competition which had 1300 cars and bikes making up the show.

In addition to the enormous car display, the Rockabilly Pin-Up Pageant, the Redback Ink Tattoo competition and the inaugural Rockynats Mulletfest, which raised thousands of dollars

“The quality of the vehicles we’ve seen this year has been incredible and the feedback we’ve received from everyone has been fantastic”

for the Mark Hughes Foundation in support of brain cancer, gave fans plenty of entertainment when they weren’t watching cars.

“The quality of the vehicles we’ve seen this year has been incredible and the feedback we’ve received from everyone has been fantastic,” Lopez said.

There were also a number of other individuals and their cars honoured outside of the competition side of the festival, including the people’s choice award and grand champion - Darryl O'Sullivan in his 1968 Holden HK Ute voted as the people’s favourite, while Billy Shelton in the 1987 VL Commodore took out the Grand Championship award.

“We’ve got so many people who are keen to come back again next year and the year after which is a testament to how, in just two events, the Rare Spares Rockynats has established itself as an automotive event in its own right.”

Summernats co-owner and key event organiser, Andy was over the moon with how the event transpired.

“It’s right up there with Summernats and the Red CentreNATS as one of the not-to-be missed motorsport events in the country.” The next Summernats event will be the Summernats Slam in Victoria on 21-22 May.

HILL AND SARGENT SECURE HISTORIC BATHURST WIN Cameron Hill and Tom Sargent made history in the 2022 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour last month, having produced a fairy-tale victory in the annual Easter Sunday race.

the six hours, the CHE Racing Team had drama of their own in the lead up to their memorable victory.

Behind the wheel of the #147 Terga Australia BMW M2 Competition Car, the duo started the race in 63rd and charged through the field in the 130 laps to claim the win and the record for the most positions gained in a Bathurst endurance race victory.

From spending countless hours trying to get the car ready in time of the event to being excluded from qualifying due to a technical breach after Sargent posted a record-breaking lap to claim pole position.

Taking out second place in an inspiring performance of their own was Brad Carr and Tim Slade in the Car Mods Australia #8 BMW M3, while reigning champions Shane Smollen, Rob Rubis steered the Prestige Connex #1 BMW M4 to third place with the help of new recruit Nick Percat. In what was a highly entertaining race that saw plenty of drama throughout 38 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

“It was a pretty mega final stint”

They didn’t let it faze them though as Sargent made up more than 40 positions in the opening 25 laps of the race. The duo muscled their way into top spot and stayed there for the next few hours as they each produced solid stints behind the wheel.

With Slade gaining the lead after Hill’s last stop, it set up an exciting battle between the two on the final half an hour.

Slade did his best to defend against Hill as less than a few tenths separated the two, but Hill pulled off a magical move on Brock’s Skyline to claim the lead. Once in front, he never looked back, posting two consecutive record-breaking laps and crossing the finish line to wrap up a fairy-tale weekend. “It was a pretty mega final stint,” Hill said. “I just hunted Slade down. I was really struggling to find a way past him, I could see he was struggling,

but he put the car in the right places and I couldn’t do much. “I realised he was always weak at McPhillamy Park and I just thought if I could get a run through here, and send it up there, it’s on. We did it, it stuck and the rest is history. “The team did an awesome job. Didn’t put a foot wrong. Pit stops were absolutely on point and Tommy drove some sensational stints, so it was an all-round performance.” As for Sargent, he was happy to be a part of the process and even more thrilled to get the win in the way that they did. “To have it (pole position) taken off us hurt for sure, but I definitely think it made the fire in the belly really strong for today,” Sargent said post-race. “I think for us to drive through the way that we did really proved that our speed wasn't just on that technical infringement. “I was very fortunate that I was able to be heavily involved in the build.

“A lot of us put in constant 100hour weeks to get this car here and at the time I was questioning whether it was worth it, but I can say right now that it was worth it. "The amount of people behind the scenes that have gotten this car here blows my mind." The next Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships event will be at Sydney Motorsport Park on 27-29 May.

BATES WINS IN CANBERRA DESPITE SVG PRESSURE

Harry Bates and John McCarthy have once set the benchmark in the 2022 RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC) after a big win in last month’s season opener. Having already enjoyed multiple victories in previous editions of the Netier National Capital Rally, the duo proved too strong for their competition that was built on the back of a dominant opening day. Despite having won every stage in the event’s first day, the reigning ARC champions didn’t have it all their way on the second day as both Shane van Gisbergen and Brendan Reeves claimed two stage wins apiece. It was a near-perfect ARC debut for van Gisbergen, who steered the Red Bull backed Skoda Fabia R5 to a well deserved outright second-place alongside Glen Weston, as well as winning the EROAD Power Stage. 42 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

Rounding out the podium was Reeves and co-driver Kate Catford as the duo overcame a challenging Saturday to guide the Hyundai Australia backed Hyundai N i30 to a brilliant six-stage effort on the Sunday. However, while both van Gisbergen and Reeves both enjoyed successful runs in the event, the weekend belonged to the Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia powerhouse crew and Bates was thrilled to start the season on a high.

“Yesterday was difficult but the conditions on the Kowen Forest side of Canberra today were good. “It was a really enjoyable win and I am very happy to get the win again, I love this rally – it’s even more special with family and friends being here to celebrate with us.

“I love this rally – it’s even more special with family and friends being here to celebrate with us”

“It was a very tough weekend, which is typical of the Netier National Capital Rally,” Bates said after his win on the Sunday.

“I am very excited to get out to WA. As much as I love Canberra, it’s also exciting to get to an away rally. When we go to Perth. It’s a rally I love. The roads suit my driving style and I can't wait to get out there and tackle that challenge.” Taking out fourth place and enjoying his highest ever finish in the ARC

Not only did he finish fourth, but Gill's productive weekend also ended up with him winning the White Wolf Constructions ARC Production Cup and the Motorsport Australia NSW Rally Championship.

Ian Griffin and David Stephens claimed the ARC Classic Cup after long-time leaders Trevor Stilling and Jon Thomson failed to finish the final stage.

Finishing second in the White Wolf Constructions ARC Production Cup was another driver to enjoy a best ever ARC result, in Timothy Wilkins and his co-driver Jim Gleeson - the duo finishing sixth outright behind Tom Clarke and Ryan Preston in the White Wolf Racing Ford Fiesta.

After a huge opening to the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC) in Canberra, the championship heads west for the first time since 2019. Taking place towards the end of this month, the Make Smoking History Forest Rally will see crews contest 182 competitive kilometres spread over 17 stages – four of which will run on the Friday night as Super Special Stages in Bunbury. Saturday serves as the biggest day with 120 competitive kilometres and eight stages, while the event will wrap up on Sunday with half that distance across five stages – the final outing being the EROAD Power Stage. As for the entry list, there will be no shortage of talent taking part in the second round of the season. 44 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

Richie Dalton, Arron Windus, Troy Dowell and Tom Clarke have all locked in their place to compete in the second round – some of whom are hopeful of continuing their momentum, while some will be wanting to restart their campaigns.

be hoping to continue their incredible winning streak of eight ARC rounds that began at this same event in 2019.

The two Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia crews each fit under one of the categories above – Lewis Bates and Anthony McLoughlin having had a big off on the first day of the Netier National Capital Rally and keen to have a big result in WA.

“We have been keeping tabs on the event over the past couple of years as the Western Australian Rally Championship has still run events there and it looks like there aren’t too many changes to previous years so we should be pretty familiar with the event.

of replicating that success to continue our momentum from Canberra.” From the current ARC champion to a driver at the start of his own rallying journey in Daniel Gonzalez. There are quite a few local drivers prepared to pit themselves against the best in Australia, such as young gun Max McRae, Glen Alcorn and Garry Mills, however none of them are as raw as the ARC’s newest debutant. A former circuit racer, Gonzalez acquired John O’Dowd’s former Skoda Fabia R5 in the off season and had a strong start to the Motorsport Australia WA Rally Championship with fourth place last month. “We surprised ourselves with the pace towards the end of the event and the

fact that we won a stage – considering that we hadn’t reccied the stages either because we didn’t know how to write the right notes,” Gonzalez said. “Because we did so well in that first event and that the ARC was coming, we thought we might as well sign up for it and see how we go against the best.” “Even if the results aren’t there, I intend to one day go for a full ARC campaign because rally is wicked, and I have fallen in love. It’s a whole different sport and I am addicted to it already.” Entries for the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship’s second round close on 11 May and interested crews can enter via rally.com.au.

There will be plenty of spectator points throughout the weekend, while those who can't make it can tune into Seven Network for the live broadcast of the EROAD Power Stage or a 60-minute event highlights show in the weeks after. The Make Smoking History Forest Rally takes place in Bunbury and Nannup on 20-22 May.

POONCARIE TO WELCOME RECORD FIELD IN AORC BATTLE ROYALE The BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) returns this month with a bang as it heads to unfamiliar territory just north of the Victorian/ New South Wales border. A record entry list of 75 crews will battle it out in the AORC’s most recent inclusion, the Coomealla Memorial Club and Bendigo Bank Pooncarie Desert Dash, despite the famous Tatts Finke Desert Race happening early next month. Although there is a big entry list, there aren’t just crews making up the numbers with plenty of the championship’s heavy hitters locked in to be in attendance, including current championship leader Josh Howells. The New South Welshman will have his hands full for much of the event with many other top 46 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

contenders entered – the most notable being Shannon Rentsch, Beau Robinson and Greg Gartner. Of the current AORC top 10, nine crews will be in attendance with the second placed Ryan Taylor, Jake Swinglehurst, Ally Howells, Matt Huxley and Brett Comiskey, all of whom will be looking to continue on their solid starts to the season.

Some of the crews to look out for include Phil Lovett, while round one attendees Greg Campbell, Simon Evans and Glen Akroyd Jeff McNiven, Glen Brinkman, John Wisse and Joshua Weidman.

“We’re really happy with the entry list and it’s one of the best the event has ever had”

Boasting the biggest field amongst the classes is the SXS Pro class, which welcomes more than 30 crews. All 36 crews will once again be battling it out for KINCROME SXS Motorsport Australia Championship honours.

Hosted by the Sunraysia Motorsport Club, club President Peter Freckleton was thrilled with the number of crews entered in the round.

“We’re really happy with the entry list and it’s one of the best the event has ever had,” Freckleton said. “It’s an exciting time for the town of Pooncarie because they haven’t had a race meeting of this size since around 2006 and the fact that there is such a big entry list adds to the excitement.

“We have a whole new team putting this event together on a new purpose-built track and we’re expecting quite a big turnout of spectators as well which is nice, so we’re all really looking forward to it. “We couldn’t have asked for anything better especially with the calibre of competitors that are coming this weekend. I just hope they all enjoy the racing and the event itself.” The event will see crews arrive for Scrutineering and reconnaissance on Friday 5 May before the official action begins on the morning of Saturday 6 May with Prologue. Following on from Prologue, where crews will take on the 10km short course to secure a strong starting spot, the event’s first section will run in the afternoon with one lap of the 100km course. Participating crews will then complete the event’s

remaining 300 kilometres during the three-lap second section on Sunday, with the leading crew to start at 9am local time. In order to help crews complete the challenging 300km final day, there will be a compulsory 45-minute service break between laps two and three. Highlights from the show will be screened on 7plus and 7mate following the event, with in depth coverage during the event on AORC’s social media channels and website. The Coomealla Memorial Club and Bendigo Bank Pooncarie Desert Dash takes place in Pooncarie on 6-8 May.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMPETITORS SAYING? “We raced there once a long time ago. We have always liked it up there in Mildura. It’s very open and should be a good track and we look forward to it.” Shannon Rentsch

“It will be completely new. We have not been there before but we have heard that it’s very sandy and tough on the cars.” Ally Howells

“It will be interesting because no one has seen the track and there isn’t too much information out there so it will be quiet even amongst everyone.” David Kermond

“One of the most important things of the round will definitely be reconnaissance because there will be a lot of crews in a similar boat to us, where it will be the first proper look at the track, so we’ll be making sure we are taking everything in.” Mat Huxley

“It was a really boggy and really sandy track last year, but we have had lots of rain this year, so I think that the track is going to be quite good. It’s going to be hard and quick which is nice.” Alan Dixon

SVG MOVES FURTHER AHEAD AFTER AWESOME APRIL Shane van Gisbergen has moved further ahead of the rest of the Repco Supercars Championship field after two big events in the month of April. With the championship starring as a support category at the Formula 1 Heineken Australian Grand Prix before taking centre stage at the Bunnings Perth Supersprint, it was a busy month for all teams and drivers. Heading into the month, the reigning champion held a lead of 67 points over Anton De Pasquale, but come the end of April, 164 points separate the duo courtesy of SVG’s scintillating form. A total of seven races were completed over the course of the month and 48 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

van Gisbergen claimed four of them, while Chaz Mostert enjoyed a solid two-win campaign at Albert Park. Will Davison was the other race winner – taking out the middle race in the championship’s grand return to Western Australia at the end of the month. All seven races also had a good number of different drivers enjoying podium appearances, including some team double podiums and some droughts broken in the meantime. The first team double podium came at Albert Park when Grove Racing’s David Reynolds and Lee Holdsworth secured second and third in the event’s second

outing, while Davison led a Dick Johnson Racing one-two in the second race of the Bunnings Perth Supersprint. Remarkably, Davison’s win was his first in six years, he wasn’t the only one to end a winless streak with van Gisbergen winning a race at Wanneroo for the first time in his career. And of course, he did it in style too – under the night sky with the fireworks welcoming him across the line. The current championship leader’s second win came at the expense of James Courtney, who came out of nowhere to find himself in contention. Although Courtney didn’t win the race, he still came away with his first podium appearance since 2016. However, despite the intriguing narratives to come out of April, it was all about the championship leader, who seems to be doing very little wrong in gunning for his third Supercars title. Only one round of the Repco Supercars Championship takes place in May with the Winton Supersprint on 21-22 May.
