MEMBER SURVEY TO DRIVE STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATES SOME OF THE KEY RESULTS FROM THE SURVEY INCLUDE
Photo: Nicole Crowley
Motorsport Australia has released the results from its recent member survey, with the findings used to deliver updates to the existing Strategic Plan. Established market research firm TKP conducted the survey in July, which canvassed the views of current licence holders, both officials and competitors, as well as club administrators and lapsed members. The survey has identified several areas for improvement, with the Motorsport Australia Board committing to including key actions from the survey in the organisation’s updated Strategic Plan document which has also been released. Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser thanked those who took part in the survey.
Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said the organisation was going through a significant period of change, as it accelerated its ‘radical simplification’ program. “Our mission statement is ‘more people enjoying more motorsport more often’ and in everything we do that is our clear aim,” Arocca explained. “From the IT upgrades to the promotion of grassroots motorsport through our media channels, such as Speed Read, it is clear our strategy is to continue delivering for members in many areas. We have used the COVID period to rapidly accelerate many planned changes, most notably improvements to our IT systems and the recent licence restructure.
“This survey has given us a great insight into what our members are thinking across a range of topics.”
“However outside of those improvements, this survey has been “There is no sugar extremely important coating it, the past to further understand 18 months have what our members been challenging for see as the challenges Motorsport Australia - Andrew Fraser, and the areas where and our members,” Motorsport Australia President we can improve as Fraser said. an organisation to grow the sport, provide further support “This survey has given us a great insight for officials and assist our loyal clubs. into what our members are thinking across a range of topics, while also “There were a number of results in this providing reassurance that many of the survey that we were aware of, such projects currently being delivered across IT, as the lack of dedicated motorsport development and grassroots motorsport facilities and the challenges of the are areas we should continue to focus on. existing permit application process, “The Board and all our staff have made a commitment to reduce the barriers to participation and we believe through innovations like the Motorsport Australia App and the improved online member portal, we’re doing just that. “As 2022 shapes up to be a very busy year, much to the relief of everyone in motorsport, it’s important for Motorsport Australia to acknowledge how we can best deliver the support and systems to allow as many events as possible, while growing the total number of competitors and officials who hold Motorsport Australia licences.”

•
At a high level, the survey tells us that while our members respect the brand, their interaction with us is generally driven by the need to get a licence and enter events
•
Approximately 80 per cent of competition licence holders were satisfied, or had a neutral response, in regards to the recent licence restructure
•
Feedback from Officials for the licence restructure and changes was very positive
•
Licence holders cite a lack of time and the associated costs of participation as reasons that they cannot use their licence
•
The overwhelming majority of members engaged with Motorsport Australia through our online services, including the website and member portal
•
Licence holders are generally satisfied with the Member Portal, the Event Entry System, and the Learning Management System, however clubs have identified Event Entry needs to be improved to suit their event. This is currently being worked on
•
There has been strong uptake of the Motorsport Australia App with 60 per cent having downloaded and used the app
•
Of the survey respondents, 84 per cent purchased their licence online using the Member Portal
•
Speed Read, the monthly member e-magazine, is extremely popular – 73 per cent of respondents read it with 70 per cent finding the content relevant
•
While the majority of permit applicants expressed either satisfaction or neutrality toward the permit process, there were 20 per cent who found it difficult, namely due to paperwork and required forms. This will be improved in the coming months
•
Of the lapsed respondents, more than half said that the reason for not renewing their licence was due to the limited availability of events. When asked of their motivation to renew, 25 per cent stated that more events would be the reason to reinstate the licence
for example, but overall it is always important to get a better understanding of the landscape from our members.
“We are also pleased to see that the majority of survey respondents are eager for us to improve the diversity in participation, as well as develop broader sustainability and environment strategies. These areas were already being worked on as part of our strategic objectives, but it is reassuring to know our members see diversity, inclusion and climate change as issues that need to be addressed.” A detailed infographic, along with an overview of actions to be delivered in response to the survey can be found on the following page.

MEMBER SURVEY RESULTS
More than 2,000 Motorsport Australia members, including competitors, officials and club office bearers, have had their say on the issues impacting them. Working with research firm TKP, we have captured some of the major themes and outcomes from the survey as well as Motorsport Australia’s actions as a result of this feedback. Regular member surveys will continue to take place in the years ahead to help us respond to the needs of our members as we ‘Return to Race’.

REFRESHED STRATEGIC PLAN AVAILABLE Motorsport Australia has updated its 2020-2022 Strategic Plan, acknowledging the changing environment and challenges since the Plan was first introduced. The overall objectives of the Plan remain the same, however several key strategic projects have been added due to the impact of the ongoing COVID situation, along with recent feedback from the 2021 Member Survey. Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said the update of the Strategic Plan was an important step for the organisation as it plans for a busy few months and years ahead. “The Board and management of Motorsport Australia has spent significant time assessing and updating this Strategic Plan as we

look towards the next 18 months of motorsport,” Arocca said. “This updated Plan could also be seen as a ‘report card’, as we highlight those projects we have completed, those that are ongoing, and those we have added based on the changing motorsport landscape and feedback from our members. “Our key focus in the short term is the sport’s ‘Return To Race’ in the coming months, but there are a number of other opportunities and areas for improvement that will have long term ramifications. “Some of these areas include the ongoing improvements to our IT system, a stronger focus on grassroots motorsport, as well as a more detailed strategy around our corporate responsibilities.
“Our key focus in the short term is the sport’s ‘Return To Race’” - Eugene Arocca, Motorsport Australia CEO
“The recent Member Survey has also driven changes to our Strategic Plan. There are some specific areas our members want to see us focus on and we have incorporated those into the Plan.” The existing 2020-2022 Strategic Plan can be read here, with the 2021 update available here.

BASKERVILLE HOSTS SUCCESSFUL HISTORICS

More than 150 competitors put on an entertaining display in front of 3000 adoring fans at Baskerville Raceway during last month’s annual Baskerville Historics. With the eclectic mix of classic and historic cars spread across five racing categories and four regularity events, the jam-packed schedule saw more than 50 events run across across the three-day meeting. One of the main attractions of the weekend was the Thomas Parker Rare Spares - Muscle Car Cup, and there was a fair share of drama as the biggest name on the entry list in Adam Garwood was unable to secure round honours.

Winning that race and the remaining sessions was Holden Torana driver Jarad House, who added three victories to his two runner-up placings the day before. The race drama didn’t just stay in the Muscle Car Cup as the combined Shannons / MGCC Group N & Group S also saw two drivers share the spoils.
The only other close affair to occur in the race categories was in the SRT Logistics Historic Sports and Racing Cars as Malcolm Lee’s two victories looked to have sealed top honours before he failed to finish the final race, which handed the victory to Darryl Hurd in the Cheetah MK8.

TOWNSVILLE NEARLY READY TO RACE DriveIt NQ's brand new motorsport precinct near Townsville is gaining plenty of traction with development of the race track and facilities well underway. Once the facility is complete, the multi-purpose complex will be the only regional owned motorsport facility within Australia and will boast a world class race circuit, drag strip and speedway track. In addition to hosting motorsport events at its various circuits, the venue’s other main focus will be its driver education programs, which include advanced and defensive driving courses, product testing and a place where individuals can learn to drive in general. Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser recently visited the project in Calcium where construction continues.
“Everything is progressing well at DriveIt NQ. The infrastructure they are building is outstanding – the vision and the commitment of DriveIt NQ and particularly from Greg Fitzgerald and Pat Driscoll is truly impressive. “People like Greg and Pat are exactly what are sport needs and relies upon – committed, passionate people who work for the motorsport community. Their vision, and plenty of hard work, will leave a lasting legacy. “They are doing an exceptional job in facilitating the development and I truly believe that – when fully realised - we’re going to have a world-class facility at our disposal, which is fantastic for Queensland motorsport, and for the North Queensland region in particular. “To have a permanent circuit in a region that is passionate about motorsport will undoubtedly grow the sport in these regions and give motorsport

enthusiasts of North Queensland another avenue to pursue their passion. “I highly commend DriveIt NQ for their efforts in creating something special and this circuit should have a significant boost for the North Queensland economy. “Obviously circuit racers aren’t the only winners here. The fact that these facilities will ultimately accommodate karters, drag racers and speedway competitors, or just anyone wanting to learn how to drive, is a true testament to the individuals behind this project.” It’s been an journey for DriveIt NQ since announcing its intention of building new facilities. Along the way they have secured significant financial support from both the Federal and Queensland Governments to get to this stage, and are committed to securing further support to fully realise their dream. Late last year, the organisation released imagery for the racetrack – a basic 2.5 kilometre configuration with speeds up to 300 km/h possible for some categories.

SENIOR OFFICIAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ACCEPTING EOI'S As of September, Motorsport Australia is now accepting expressions of interest for officials to take part in its Senior Official Development Program. Created as a way to provide volunteer officials with a progressive pathway up the chain of motorsport, the program hopes to grow Motorsport Australia’s official’s pool with better-trained and more knowledgeable individuals. The program is currently accepting expressions of interest from individuals looking to develop and grow their skills within the areas of Stewarding, Technical Delegate and Race Director roles at state and national events. The training involves a mixture of theoretical and practical exercises, with the latter part taking place at national race meetings around the country, where participants will get real experience at events and put their learnings into practice. For those who complete the training, which is tailored to be more accommodating to each individual’s needs, the skills acquired can help them move up the officials chain, establish better relationships with drivers and have the confidence for problem solving and decision making at events.

“The program is excellent. It gears you up for the future and you are brought in as a group to get tutored by some really talented gold-level officials, who have a wealth of knowledge to share,” Pincott said.
year and I just can’t wait to continue because I am really enjoying it.
“It’s perfect as a mentoring exercise because you’re going to events and you’re working with these people who are very accommodating and keen to help you develop.
Official licence holders can express their interest in taking part in the program simply by filling out an application form via Motorsport Australia’s Officials/ Volunteers Rosterfy Event System.
"It’s a good mix between theory and practical exercises and there are ongoing relationships and mentorships that come out of it. I absolutely recommend it to anyone thinking of enhancing their skillset.
Interested officials have until 11:59pm AEST on 15 October to express their desire in participating in the program.
“I think the best thing about it is that you’re with people who share the same desire to learn and have similar skills – Of course there are some that may be more experienced, but it’s great because they teach you things that you wouldn’t have thought. It’s just fantastic. “It’s a shame I have been only able to do one event this year, but our program has been pushed back to next
“I whole-heartedly recommend this program to anyone who is looking to get better and climb the ladder.”
Any questions regarding both Rosterfy and the Senior Official Development Program can be sent to rosterfy@motorsport.org.au

WHAT IS ROSTERFY?
Already, eight individuals from around the country have featured in a stewarding workshop in order to improve their skillsets.
The online system is the one-stop-shop for all Motorsport Australia organised events, which will soon be used for event registrations, rostering, event time communications, and year-round updates.
One of those participants was 2017 New South Wales Official of the Year, Glenn Pincott who despite being able to only attend one event due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, was full of praise for the program.
Individuals simply need to register an account, a simple online process and then navigate their way to apply for the program.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA HOSTS EPIC FORTNIGHT OF MOTORSPORT
South Australia’s massive fortnight on motorsport last month was a roaring success with The Bend Motorsport Park and Mallala Motorsport Park both hosting events.
Thousands of people attended Mallala for the celebratory event as more than 160 cars split across three categories battled it out over a jam-packed schedule in the two-day event.
Mallala was the first to get the busy fortnight underway as it celebrated its 60th anniversary in style before The Bend hosted the hugely popular Classic the following weekend.
From the 40 car Hyundai Excels field in its annual Ryan Pannowitch Memorial trophy and the 80-car supersprint to the special Legends Lunch with Gordon Sweeney and Dean Canto and a variety of vehicle and Aviation displays, there was plenty for the fans to enjoy. When it came to the racing, fivetime Ryan Pannowitch Memorial winner Asher Johnston grabbed his sixth title in what was an epic fight with Jayden Wanzek. “That was as tight as they come. Jay was putting the pressure on for the whole race so it was a really

Renault 3.5 V8, after he fell just short of breaking the outright lap record and the young circuit.
Taking out top honours for each group in the 80-car supersprint were Group A’s Peder Holst in a VW Golf, Mazda MX5 driver Andy Wortmeyer for Group B, and Darren van Diemen who steered his GR Yaris to a Group C victory.
“It was a great lap, great fun, but just not quite enough so the record will have to wait for another year,” Shahin said.
A week later, the South Australia motorsport party continued as 140 competitors spread across seven categories, including threetime Supercars champion Craig Lowndes and South Australian speedster Dan Day, put on a show. Taking out event honours despite rain causing significant delays was Yasser Shahin in the Formula
“We’ve got big plans to come back and give it a shake again. This is a great format, we love it and it has been a sensational weekend.” Rounding out the podium was teenager Seb Amadio in the Team BRM S5000 and GC Marine Australian Prototype Series star JP Drake in his Wolf F1 Mistral. HUGE FIELD ENTERTAIN IN GSCC HILL CLIMB The Grafton Sporting Car Club (GSCC) welcomed more than 60 competitors for the most recent round of its multi-club hill climb series last month as national star Dean Amos stole the show. Taking place at Mountain View Motor Sport Complex, competitors got up to four runs on the course in pursuit of a class and outright winning time, but in the end, Amos only needed one run. Enjoying an impressive year behind the wheel, the 2021 Motorsport Australia
Queensland Hill Climb Champion entered the event as a clear favourite and delivered – with a lightning quick opening run time of 41.19 seconds enough to secure victory. Although he was unable to beat the time on his remaining runs, Amos’ consistency was still there to see as he was within a second and a half in all three attempts. Taking second place a further six seconds off the pace was 2006 OMS CF04 driver Miles Hoare. Like Amos, Hoare’s best run came on the first attempt with his 47.59 earning a deserving second place. Rounding out the top three was the fastest tin top driver in Todd Wedd, who steered his 2010 Subaru STI to third place courtesy of a respectable 48.33 second run on his final attempt. Out of the 67 competitors featuring in the event, there were five juniors and four ladies. Maxwell Contojohn was the fastest of the lot – guiding his 1998 Subaru WRX STI to 4th in class and 36th outright, while just one place below Contojohn was the fastest woman in Jo Stanton and her Nissan Skyline R33.

LEYBURN SPRINTS PUT ON A SHOW IN GRAND RETURN The Historic Leyburn Sprints returned from its two-year break in style last month as Warwick Hutchinson claimed his fourth title in dramatic fashion. More than 300 cars attended the 25th anniversary of the event celebrating the 1949 Australian Grand Prix being held in the rural Queensland town, with a large portion of them contesting the one-kilometre Leyburn street course. However, when it came to the outright result, just two provided the main entertainment with Hutchinson claiming the thrilling victory at the eleventh hour.
20 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
All weekend, he had trailed the Van Dieman single-seater of Brett Bull, whose time of 42.365 seconds looked to have all but sealed the victory and his maiden Col Furness Memorial Trophy. However on his final attempt of the weekend, Hutchinson steered his Mazda rotary-powered OMS28 to a 42.271 second run, snatching the victory from Bull by less than one tenth of a second. The victory was Hutchinson’s first since 2013 and the 56-year-old was thrilled to claim the title in the way he did.
“This trophy is close to my heart. I’ve been up here several times and it’s good to be back,” Hutchinson said. “Brett was in front most of the weekend and it was a really close battle. That was very satisfying to beat him on the very last run.” In other classes, Brad Stratton guided his 1962 Elfin Mallala sports car to a 55.225 second lap time, which was enough to deem him the fastest out of the Historics, while Thomas Rath won the Ann Collins Memorial Junior Award in a Suzuki Swift.
“Everyone loved the sound of the NASCAR” - Brodie Kostecki
Outside of the sprints, there were lots of other activities for fans to enjoy, including meet and greets with the Leyburn Legends, including Australian motorsport royalty such as John Bowe and Dick Johnson. Johnson also featured in the parade, where he was driven around in Australia’s oldest racing car, the 1922 Wikner Ford Special. The five-time Australian Touring Car champion wasn’t the only big name to do a lap in an iconic car with current Repco Supercars Championship star Brodie Kostecki doing demonstration runs in Marcos Ambrose’s famous Ford Fusion NASCAR. With the car on display in Australia for the first time, the Erebus Motorsport driver had enjoyed both driving the car and the event’s atmosphere.
“Everyone loved the sound of the NASCAR – it revs to 9000 and sounds unique,” Kostecki said. “It was great to see so many people and so many cars – quite different to what I’ve been doing. “It’s been nice to sit a few kids in my car for photographs.” Off track, the 1979 Ford Falcon 500 Ute Rally Pack was deemed the best car in the Shannons Show N Shine, while a 1963 Millard Safari was crowned as the best presented van.

NATIONAL SPEED AND AUTO TESTS UPDATE The majority of the 2021 Motorsport Australia National Speed and Auto Tests will not run this year, with one championship still scheduled for 2021. With Victoria and New South Wales still under lockdowns and the situation surrounding border closures no closer to being resolved, the Motorsport Australia Khanacross Championship and the Motorsport Australia Supersprint Championship will next be held in 2022. Both the Motor Sports Club of Tasmania (Khanacross) and the Australian Racing Drivers' Club (Supersprint) will again be given the opportunity to host their respective events next year. With the Holden Sporting Car Club of Queensland also cancelling this year’s Motorsport Australia Motorkhana Championship last month, only one event is scheduled to take place in 2021. Originally scheduled to take place on 21-24 October, the Motorsport Australia Hill Climb Championship will now run on 25-28 November, subject to an improvement in the border restrictions. 22 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
The MG Car Club of Queensland will continue to host the event and Mount Cotton will once again provide the setting for one the biggest hill climb events of the year.
“There is light at the end of the tunnel and plenty of positivity about what lies ahead for motorsport more broadly in 2022.” - Michael Smith, Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations
Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith thanked the clubs for their ongoing support and flexibility.
“It’s quite disappointing that we have had to cancel another two events, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and plenty of positivity about what lies ahead for motorsport more broadly in 2022,” Smith said. “These are difficult decisions to make for any club so we support both the Motor Sports Club of Tasmania and Australian Racing Drivers' Club’s decision to focus on running these events next year. “Of course we back their decisions and look forward to each club finally getting the opportunity to hold these events in 2022. “As for the hill climb championship, the change of date gives the MG Car Club of Queensland every bit of hope the situation will have improved and the country’s best hill climbers can battle it out for national honours. “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we navigate through these difficult times.”

MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA PARTNERS WITH MAXWELL PLUS Motorsport Australia has partnered with the Artificial Intelligence (Al) diagnostics company, Maxwell Plus to help its members take action against prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Australian men, nearly one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease by the age of 85. Yet many of the 5 million men at risk are not taking proper action. Maxwell Plus is an Al based diagnostic platform for prostate cancer focused on making sure men can get tested easily and properly.
Their results have shown that they are able to detect 40 per cent more prostate cancers with 50 per cent fewer invasive, unnecessary biopsies. ''This is an important area for Motorsport Australia, given many of our members and employees are in the risk category,” Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said. “While this is a disease that directly affects men, we know that there are many of our female members who this campaign will apply to, given they will have fathers, brothers, friends or other relatives who might be at risk.
“It was simple, quick and painless. All I needed was the blood test and now I have complete peace of mind” - Mark Webber
“We are excited to be able to help our members take control of their health, during a difficult time and hopefully help save lives.” Legends of the sport are also supporting the cause. Mark Webber, Australian Formula 1 Legend and World Endurance Championship winner, has used the service and was impressed by how easy it was and how detailed the report was. “It was simple, quick and painless. All I needed was the blood test and now I have complete peace of mind,” Webber said.

Maxwell Plus can be accessed online – their participants can determine if they are eligible for testing. They are then connected with a Maxwell Plus doctor who organises a local test.

“The Al analyses existing patients' PSA tests, MRls and clinical parameters searching for complex trends that humans may not be able to see and compares each man's results to a database of over 250,000 prostate cancer cases,” Maxwell Plus Co-Founder Dr Elliot Smith said. “The information is presented to expert clinicians who confirm the results and report these findings to the patient.
INTERESTING STATS ABOUT MAXWELL PLUS AND PROSTATE CANCER • More than 3,000 men die each year from prostate cancer, 5 million men are at risk, and one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease by the age of 85. If caught early the survival rate is 98 per cent • In Australia the median PSA at diagnosis is currently 7.3, and median age is 68 (PCOR 2020)
“We look forward to working with Motorsport Australia and are excited to help their members take control of their health.”
• Maxwell Plus detected 33 cases with a median PSA 65 per cent lower at diagnosis of 2.8, and a median age seven years younger at 61
Dr Peter Swindle, a urologist of more than 20 years and Professor Tony Costello, the pioneer of robotic surgery in Australia, are medical advisors for the company and have helped to develop the technology.
• 38 per cent of these cases would have been completely missed by the current guidelines which recommend a cut-off PSA of 3 for most men and 2 for those with family history
“Our service is finding prostate cancer in men five years younger, at lower PSAs and with fewer unnecessary biopsies. Nearly 40 per cent of the men we have diagnosed with prostate cancer would have been completely missed by the current guidelines,” Dr Swindle, Chief Medical Officer of Maxwell Plus said.
• Maxwell Plus has an unnecessary biopsy rate (biopsying men with low grade or no cancer) 56 per cent lower than Australia and American average • In Australia, around seven per cent of men present to urologists with metastatic disease, all Maxwell Plus diagnoses have occurred before metastasis whilst the cancer is localised and easily treatable
MAXWELL PLUS' OFFER MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA MEMBERS Together with Maxwell Plus, Motorsport Australia will subsidise the costs of Motorsport Australia members' test with Maxwell Plus, meaning they or their direct families can take part in the non-invasive test which could save a life.

CROMPTON BACKS PROSTATE TESTING Prominent Australian motorsport media personality Neil Crompton has also shown his support for Motorsport Australia’s Maxwell Plus partnership. Crompton, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year revealed in a video to members about his story and believed that men need to take the disease seriously and get tested. “In roughly March or April, I had a test and literally tripped over the fact that I had prostate cancer,” Crompton said. “I have been subsequently operated on, everything has gone okay, and I have popped out of the other side with a maintenance release. “I have a few components missing, but I am good to go. I am living proof that you need to get on and get yourself tested. “I can’t commend this more highly. Get tested. “Had I not done this somewhere between one to five years, it would have been a DNF for me. I would have been dead. It’s a serious topic.”

INVESTIGATORY TRIBUNAL REPORT RELEASED INTO TARGA TASMANIA
Photo: Dan Thompson
Last month, Motorsport Australia released the full Report and Findings into the three fatalities at Targa Tasmania in April this year, including 23 recommendations to be implemented for future tarmac rally events. Immediately after the event Motorsport Australia established an Investigatory Tribunal to consider the circumstances of each Targa Tasmania incident, and to make recommendations to improve the safety for all participants in future events.
“This Tribunal has conducted a thorough and detailed examination of the circumstances surrounding two very sad incidents affecting the motorsport community”
The Motorsport Australia Board accepted the Report and will implement all 23 recommendations made in it. After working through a large amount of evidence, including submissions from many witnesses and experts, the Report’s findings have now been made public.

The 61-page document describes the circumstances of each incident, and an explanation for each recommendation. The Tribunal was Chaired by Australian Institute of Motorsport Safety (AIMSS) Chair Garry Connelly AM, with Matt Selley and Neal Bates as tribunes. Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca thanked the Tribunal members for their work, and those
who contributed to the investigation through submissions or expert advice. “Firstly, I once again pass on my condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of Shane Navin, Leigh Mundy and Dennis Neagle who tragically lost their lives in April this year,” Arocca said. “This Tribunal has conducted a thorough and detailed examination

of the circumstances surrounding two very sad incidents affecting the motorsport community. “I also want to thank the team at Targa Australia for their contribution and co-operation for the duration of the investigation. Motorsport Australia and Targa Australia have a strong relationship and we look forward to continuing to work together. “I am pleased to say that Motorsport Australia has committed to implementing all 23 recommendations by 1 March 2022. “The Report has been provided to the Tasmanian Coroner, Tasmania Police and other key stakeholders.”
With the recommendations to be implemented next year, Motorsport Australia has confirmed tarmac rallies, including Targa events, will be permitted to continue prior to this date. “Tarmac rally events will likely be held in 2021 and early 2022 subject to COVID-19 restrictions. We have implemented a stringent targeted risk assessment which each event organiser must complete before a Motorsport Australia permit will be issued.” Arocca added.
REPORT RECOMMENDATIONS The 23 recommendations focus on key areas where safety can be improved, including, but not limited to: • Managing high terminal speeds and average speeds achieved at each event
• Consideration of jumps and other course design features
• Changes to address driver fatigue, skills, licencing and complacency • Ensuring car set ups are fit for purpose
• The better use of technology and existing safety equipment • On event communications • Managing ‘missing’ cars during events

ARC LOSES THREE BUT GAINS A BRAND NEW EVENT “This event The 2021 RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship calendar had a major shakeup in September with three rounds cancelled and a new one included.
As a result of ongoing state border restrictions and international travel bans, the AGI Sport Adelaide Hills Rally and the two Coffs Coast based events scheduled for November were removed from the calendar. The large amount of planning required for all three events, which included various road closure notifications and other logistics involved in organising a rally that would see event organisers incur significant costs in the coming weeks, contributed to the decision. The second Coffs Coast event, which acted as the ARC season finale, was also a round of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship, would have had international competitors and Motorsport Australia wanted them to avoid losing out on shipping and travel bookings and any nonrefundable charges they may incur. Instead, the final round of the ARC will run in New South Wales in December and will coincide with the Canberra Light Car Club’s existing premier event, the Kosciuszko Automotive Monaro Stages Rally. The event will feature all the usual components of an ARC sprint event, with full itineraries and details to be released in the coming weeks. The event is expected to include more than 150 competitive kilometres for ARC entrants.

Highlights from the event will be available on 7plus in the week following the event, while the Elysian Energy Power Stage will also be part of the finale with all important bonus Championship points up for grabs.
Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith was excited to be confirming the new event after a significant break between rounds. “This year has certainly been a difficult one for our national championships, so it’s a pleasure to be confirming an extra round of the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship,” Smith said. “With three rounds now making up the ARC calendar for 2021, in conjunction with the Australian Rally Commission, we can confirm that a Championship will be awarded if the event can proceed as planned.

Shamrock Haulage 2WD Cup and the Junior Cup winners for 2021.” Light Car Club of Canberra President Mike Behnke was thrilled to be welcoming national competitors to the iconic NSW event.
“Given increasing vaccination numbers and the various road maps in place across the country, we are extremely hopeful that we can have the vast majority of competitors taking part.
“We’re very proud of what the LCCC has achieved in building this event from the ground up over recent years. To have the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship finale as part of our 2021 event is an honour for all of us, and is recognition of the many hours of hard work from everyone” Behnke said.
“I’d like to thank the Light Car Club of Canberra for its cooperation and support in making this event a reality, along with our ARC organising team, and of course our loyal commercial partners for their ongoing support this year.
“This event promises to be a terrific opportunity for rally starved crews to put themselves to the test against the best in Australia, and to enjoy the magnificent roads that make the event so popular, at the end of what has been a difficult year.”
“The event will again include the Elysian Energy Power Stage as per the opening two rounds. The rally will also provide us an opportunity to crown the White Wolf Constructions Production Cup,
The Kosciuszko Automotive Monaro Stages Rally, the final round of the ARC, takes place on 11 December.

AORC CANCELLED AS OFF ROAD CUPS RETURN Photo: Terry Hill Photography
The BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) has been cancelled for 2021 with the remaining rounds to be delivered as Cups. The cancellation of the season comes as ongoing state border closures significantly hampers competitors abilities to cross borders, alongside a lack of available dates and venues at the end of the year. Like last year, the Black Diamond Drilling Kalgoorlie Desert Race will be run as the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Cup – West, while the Can-Am Loveday 400 will be known as the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Cup – Central. Both events will once again be held as separate events this month and are open to those who can travel to each state. With two events having already been run in 2021, the Cobb & Co Hotel St George 399 will be now be marked as the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Cup – East, while the Tatts Finke Desert Race ends the year as a standalone event. Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith was disappointed the championship was cancelled but admitted the decision had to be made. “There have obviously been a lot of disruptions to motorsport over the past two years and unfortunately the AORC has been another victim of the current climate we find ourselves
34 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
in where competitors simply can’t get to enough events for us to justify awarding a Championship,” Smith said. “It’s quite disheartening that we have had to cancel the season again this year, especially after we had two really successful rounds completed in the first half of the year. “However, with the current situation of border closures and restrictions not looking to be eased until at least the end of October at the earliest, it’s just not possible to run a national championship at this point, alongside the fact that Finke was not open to all competitors from around Australia. “Luckily, we have events like Kalgoorlie and Loveday that can take place as standalone and which still attract large fields as state run events, as we saw in 2020 and in previous years before they joined the AORC. These events will see Cups awarded, thanks to BFGoodrich. “I would like to use this opportunity to thank all the event promoters for supporting this decision, as hard as it has been to make, and to all the competitors, officials and fans who have been patient with us for the past 18 months. “We look forward to a big 2022 where we should hopefully be able to run
all rounds of the championship and get back to a bit of normality, with more rounds than in recent years expected to make up the calendar.” With the Cobb & Co Hotel St George 399 already completed, current AORC leaders and winners of the season opener, Josh Howells and Eric Hume have been crowned as the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Cup – East winners. “It’s nice to be recognised with the BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Cup – East and we really appreciate it,” Howells said. “We obviously got a lot of recognition in March when we won the event itself, which was nice. It’s one thing to be at the end of an event, but to lead from start to finish is special. “It’s great to win the cup, but obviously we’re disappointed that the season came to end early– especially since my car was completely fine after Finke and it didn’t miss a beat.” The Black Diamond Drilling Kalgoorlie Desert Race is first up and takes place on 21-24 October, while the Can-Am Loveday 400 will run on 28-31 October.

I was obviously confident in myself and I thought I could at least make it to the interview stage, but to be chosen to go to the next stage is amazing. “I had tears of happiness when I found out because it means I am heading in the right direction and now have the opportunity to prove myself to Ferrari in the Scouting World Finals.
Toparis on the other hand has had a hugely impressive run of form having won 50 races this year alone.
Since 2016, he is often regarded as one of the quickest on track having amassed a number of state titles, as well as enjoying plenty of success on a national and international scale. Toparis believes the extremely competitive Australian drivers have been a force in refining his driving skills. “I feel flattered to have made it this far. The Ferrari Driver Academy is such a prestigious opportunity and to be selected as one of the candidates for the Finals feels amazing,” Toparis said. “I think it’s a major step forward as I continue my career in motorsport.

“I want to thank my parents and family for everything they have done to support my racing career as well as how hard they tried to get me overseas for the event during the pandemic. “I would like to thank Motorsport Australia, Ferrari and Karting Australia for this opportunity and I am sure both Jesse and myself will give it our all in the true Australian spirit." Unfortunately as a result of the current Australian COVID-19 international travel restrictions, the Toparis family made the extremely tough decision not to attend this years program after exhausting all possible methods of appropriate return travel from Italy. “I am devastated that I won’t be able to attend but I wish Jesse all the best and believe he can bring it home for team Australia,” Toparis added.
“If motor racing has taught me anything, it’s that after a hard hit, you have to get back up and go again.” Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport and Commercial Operations Michael Smith was pleased for both drivers in being selected for the Scouting World Finals. “A big congratulations must go out to Jesse and Costa for being selected to go represent the Asia Pacific and Oceania region at the FDA Scouting World Finals,” Smith said. “Jesse and Costa have quite impressive racing records and they obviously presented very well during their interviews, so it’s great they get this opportunity to showcase their skills against the best young drivers in the world. “It’s unfortunate Costa decided not to attend the FDA World Finals, but these are difficult times and we understand his position in this particular moment. “Costa is undoubtedly a hugely talented driver and we’re hopeful he will be selected for next year when the world situation has hopefully improved and the current restrictions will be eased. “As for Jesse, we wish him all the best for his time in Italy.” Karting Australia CEO Kelvin O’Reilly echoed Smith’s comments.

system and we’re delighted for both of them as they now get this once-in-alifetime opportunity,” O’Reilly added. “This is just the start of their journey and even if they’re not successful in winning a position in the academy next year, they can still be content with what they have achieved thus far. “We couldn’t be prouder that two Australians have done enough to be selected for the Ferrari Driver Academy World Finals, and it just goes to show that Australia has a fantastic development program for young kids aspiring to have motorsport careers. “Costa is a terrific driver and one with lots of promise and it’s a shame that he was unable to go but I am sure he will grow from this and use it to motivate himself in the future.”

BRINKMAN DOMINANT IN QRC THIRD ROUND
Photos: CH Images
Glenn Brinkman and Steven Richardson won a drama-filled Global Roamer II Rally in Imbil last month as the duo dominated the Motorsport Australia Queensland Rally Championship (QRC) round. Despite multiple issues forcing disruptions to the rally and forcing event organisers to cancel half the stages, Brinkman and Richardson proved too strong for the competition and ended up winning four of the five stages.
“Wins like this definitely boost the confidence, I think we’re looking in good shape” - Glenn Brinkman
After winning the first three stages, the duo had steered their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 to a 45-second lead over the second-placed Mitsubishi Magna Evolution of Andrew Carrigan and Jennifer Prince. The leaders then finished second to Tristan Carrigan and Neill Woolley on the event’s penultimate stage before getting back to winning ways on the final stage, which was run at night time. With Andrew Carrigan unable to pick up a top three finish in the final two stages, they ended up falling

behind the leaders by a minute and a half to settle for second place. However they didn’t go home empty-handed as they took out 2WD Championship honours ahead of Thomas Dermody and Ryan Preston, who rounded out the outright podium. Following on from his victory, Brinkman was just happy to get to winning ways again. ‘The rally had a lot of delays due to a series of misfortunes, but the event did everything in their power to continue the event,” Brinkman said.

“It was good to finally finish an event though, I have had dramas of my own in the previous few outings, so it was good to finish and to win was a bonus. “I think the fact that it went down to five stages made it a bit difficult as there was less room for error, but I had good tactics and drove pretty well on these roads that were pretty good. “Wins like this definitely boost the confidence, I think we’re looking in good shape.”
The fourth and final round of the Motorsport Australia Queensland Rally Championship is the Mundubbera Rally on 20 November.

ANEAR WINS MAIDEN TARGA ROUND IN CAIRNS
Photos: Otherside Productions
Luke Anear and Andy Sarandis secured their first outright Motorsport Australia TARGA Championship round victory last month after winning the 2021 TARGA Great Barrier Reef. Behind the wheel of a 2010 Subaru WRX STi, Anear and Sarandis ended up taking out the 2021/2022 season opener in Cairns thanks to a final day charge. With 130 crews contesting the 17-stage event, the outright battle came down to just two with Anear and Sarandis having trailed defending champion Tony Quinn and co-driver Brian Foster for much of the three-day tarmac rally. The opening leg comfortably belonged to Quinn and Foster, 40 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
while Anear and Sarandis managed to make plenty of inroads on day two, reducing the gap between the two crews to just 11 seconds.
“We had a red hot go and I drove the best I’ve ever driven and we caught him (Quinn) on the Palmerston run (TS 15),” Anear said.
An exciting final day saw Quinn hold on for as long as he could, until Anear’s relentless pressure paid off and secured the lead on the 15th stage, ultimately finishing the event 17 seconds ahead of Quinn.
“He wasn’t going to let me by and it was very satisfying. Then we managed to double the lead again on the next shorter stage.”
Rounding out the outright podium was a local North Queensland crew in Steve Van Der Brug and Linda Rankine, with the duo driving another 2010 Subaru WRX STi. Following on from his maiden victory, Anear was thrilled to win in the manner that he did.

“Because the roads were damp we reckon the Subaru was the right car for the conditions. “I’ve got to thank Ben Newman who gave me the car which was prepared by Buckby Motorsport on the proviso that ‘you go up there and win it’.” The top three outright crews were the same for the GT class podium, while Anear also took home top honours Cairns Regional Council GT Production. In Shannons Classic GT, 1983 Holden Commodore pilots Anthony Genocchio and Robert Horsfall were benefactors of a
late retirement to Jon and Gina Siddins to secure the class win. The next round of 2021/2022 Motorsport Australia TARGA Championship will be TARGA High Country in Victoria around Mansfield and Mount Buller on 12–14 November 2021.

NEW SHANNONS CALENDAR RELEASED
Motorsport Australia has announced a change to the 2021 Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships calendar. Two new events have been added to the line-up in November and December, while the scheduled October round at The Bend Motorsport Park will no longer go ahead. Instead, the iconic South Australian venue will now play host to the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships on 10-12 December, while Sandown International Raceway will be home to the next event on the calendar on 19-21 November, bringing racing action to the heart of Melbourne. Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport & Commercial Operations Michael Smith said the changes were necessary in light of ongoing travel restrictions. “It’s been a difficult year for competitors, venues, event organisers, officials and everyone involved in trying to make these events a possibility,” Smith explained. “For Motorsport Australia, we’ve made sure to be agile and flexible and today’s calendar announcement is a prime example of that ongoing work. While we’ve had to cancel one event, we’ve been able to lock away a further two events to allow the greatest opportunity for our categories to squeeze in as much racing as possible this year. “Sandown will host the next round of the Shannons Motorsport Australia 42 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
“We look forward to delivering more events in 2021 and to what also promises to be a sensational 2022” - Sam Shahin, Managing Director of The Bend
Championships in November, before we head to The Bend in December to finish off the year in style.
Australia has been a most progressive, sensible and trustworthy partner throughout," Shahin said.
“Understandably, these events remain subject to ongoing travel restrictions, however the various government roadmaps provide plenty of hope that these events will be able to go ahead in line with government restrictions in each state.
"The Bend has continued to reach out to all motorsport bodies, state and national organisations, category owners, and at all levels, re-affirming our readiness to remain an integral part of the resumption of motorsport in Australia.
“A huge thank you must go to the team at The Bend for their ongoing support and flexibility in allowing us to put on an event at their world-class venue, and likewise to the team at Sandown we are extremely grateful for their continued assistance. We also thank our category managers and competitors for their understanding and flexibility.
"We look forward to delivering more events in 2021 and to what also promises to be a sensational 2022."
“It’s also important to acknowledge our event sponsors for their continued backing over recent months and their dedication to supporting motorsport.” Managing Director of The Bend, Sam Shahin, echoed Smith's sentiments. “In a year of challenges, motorsport has still managed to navigate a path to hold events, and Motorsport
Categories to compete at each event, as well as any spectator and broadcast details will be announced shortly.

2021 SXS SEASON CALLED With no more events to be held for the rest of 2021,the Kincrome SXS Motorsport Australia Championship was declared late last month. Three rounds have so far been held this season, but no more events will be able to run due to the ongoing border restrictions. In light of this news, the Kincrome SXS Motorsport Australia Championship organisers agreed to declare current leaders Stephen Henry and co-driver Steve Walton champions for this year. Although he was unable to win any rounds in 2021, Henry’s lead in the championship was well deserving as the Queenslander finished twice on the podium before claiming a top five during the third round in Kooralbyn. Finishing the championship in second place just two points off was 2018 champion Simon Evans and co-driver Max O’Brien, while first year rookies Trevor Finck and Tyler Fitzgerald end the year in third.
Taking out the SXS Sport class was the first-year pairing of Eden Evans and Shannon Jennings, while Jake Williams and Kevin Williams finished second ahead of Tony Ross and Jason Chipp. Championship founder Sam Beck was disappointed with the cancellation of the season but admitted there was no other choice available. “It was a difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the season as it just was not viable for us to continue running,” Beck said. “With Kalgoorlie and St Helens already cancelled and both the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships and RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship also pulling out of their scheduled October rounds at The Bend Motorsport Park, it made it difficult to see any of our remaining two rounds from happening from a logistical point of view. “So instead of risking further cancellations and costs for our competitors and staff, we decided

to make the call now, which I think is better for the long run. “With that said, a big congratulations to Stephen and Steve for taking out the title – Stephen is a very deserving winner as he is someone who has always been around the top for a long time. “We will now turn our focus onto 2022 as we have some big plans for the championship and its future. I thank all competitors for their patience and Kincrome and all our loyal partners for their continued support.”

SUPERCARS BACK ON TRACK IN 2021 The Repco Supercars Championship will resume its 2021 season with a bang with over four consecutive weekends at Sydney Motorsport Park.
“The venue is world-class and under its new permanent lighting makes for spectacular viewing for fans at the circuit and watching at home.
Starting on 29 October, all the circuit’s various layouts and dedicated lighting will be utilised during the four separate rounds, which will include a variety of race formats and regulations, as well as having multiple races run under lights.
“First and foremost, we are happy to be back, but we will make sure we use everything that SMSP has to offer to put on the best possible show.”
In a major boost for motorsport fans, spectators will be welcome to all four Sydney Motorsport Park rounds. While Supercars is working closely with Motorsport Australia and health authorities on required COVID-safe measures, Supercars CEO Sean Seamer was excited for what would be a big month. “It is fitting that we return to racing at Sydney Motorsport Park, as we did in 2020. Those first races produced some of the best entertainment in years, and this time will be no different,” Seamer explained. 44 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ
Following the final edition of the four rounds at Eastern Creek on 21 November, Supercars teams will then have one week of rest before heading to Mount Panorama for the Repco Bathurst 1000. Like 2020, the great race will be the championship’s season finale, however this year’s event will see a six-day motorsport extravaganza take place in conjunction with Australian Racing Group (ARG). Supercars, ARG and the Bathurst Regional Council have also been working closely alongside NSW health authorities to formulate measures to ensure the safety of all staff and patrons throughout the six days.
“The events, over six days, will be something not seen before at the Mountain” - Ian North, Bathurst Mayor
Bathurst Mayor Ian North said he was looking forward to hosting what would be one of the biggest Australian motorsport events in history. “The events, over six days, will be something not seen before at the Mountain and will be a great way to see racing return to Bathurst in 2021,” North said.

“We look forward to being able to welcome the teams, drivers and fans back to Mount Panorama for what will be a festival of motorsport.” The six-day Repco Bathurst 1000 will have 10 categories taking part in the event with regular Supercars support categories such as the Dunlop Super 2/Super 3 Series, Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup, V8 SuperUtes and the Toyota 86 Series all part of the bill. As for the remaining support acts for that week, all five of ARG’s categories will be in display, including TCR Australia, Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters, National Trans Am Series, the Motorsport Australia GT Championship and the S5000s. Adding to the prestige of the event being the first official Bathurst meeting for S5000s, the round will also wrap up the return of iconic Tasman Series – which involves the open-wheel cars. Both the Dunlop Super2/Super3 Series and the S5000 Tasman Series will also be on the support card for the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperSprint in the week prior to the Bathurst 1000. More details, including ticketing and broadcast information, will be released in the coming weeks.

SNOOKS ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY AFTER STROKE After a mild stroke in late June, Tom Snooks is making an encouraging recovery. With the current restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing, it certainly has not been the best time for anyone to be alone in hospital and deprived of the comfort and support of family and friends. However, Tom was released from hospital in the latter half of last month and is now in the care of his children and continuing his gradual recovery towards good health. While the past couple of months have been difficult for Tom, the 81-year-old has had his large 46 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

Tom has been involved in motorsport since the mid-sixties and played an important role in many of Australia’s most prominent road events. Some of his roles included General Manager of the 1979 Repco Round Australia Trial, Executive Director of the Wynn’s/Australian Safari, Clerk-ofCourse of Targa Tasmania and Classic Adelaide and other roles in major events such as the Dulux and Southern Cross Rallies of the seventies and the Round Australia Trials of the nineties.
More recently, Tom held the role of Clerk-of-Course for the Classic Outback Trial more than decade and was involved in Motorsport Australia’s administration team for many years. Despite some worrying times and three stays in Hospital, including one in the ICU unit, Tom remains seriously ill, but is now in a stable condition.
