The virtual 2021 Motorsport Australia National Awards presented by Shannons Insurance was successfully conducted last month with the online presentation acknowledging many individuals for their stellar years in 2021.
From the likes of Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen and Motorsport Australia Gold Star winner Joey Mawson to the multiple BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Cup and RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Cup winners, all drivers who took out silverware in 2021 were celebrated.
Herlihy was awarded the Presidential Citation for having a major contribution to the development of Motorsport Australia’s new IT structures, which made navigating through the organisation’s website and membership portal more accessible. Media were also recognised in

Another individual excelling in the chosen field to contribute to motorsport was IT expert and former MG Car Club of Victoria President, Michael Herlihy.
Held in Eudunda, 29 crews from across the state took part in the one-day event where they tackled 150 competitive kilometres over seven completed stages.
Other notable results saw Kevin Millard and Patrick Hughes claim the P3/ P4 class, Mark and Aimee Lacey win the Classic Cup in their Ford Lazer TX3 and Stephen Barker and Mandy Rudham take out the Regularity,

Despite only winning three stages, Pohlner and Branford’s consistent performance throughout the whole event saw them secure the outright rally win.
The Motorsport Australia South Australian Rally Championship continued last month with Jamie Pohlner and Adam Branford taking out the 2022 Copyworld Walky 100.
The duo faced plenty of competition though, especially from the likes of Zayne Admiraal and Guy Tyler –both of whom scored stage wins.
POHLNER WALKYBRANFORDANDWIN100
Although he missed out on an outright victory, Tyler still guided his Mitsubishi Magna to the 2WD win, while Pohlner grabbed the P5 Class win in addition to his outright victory.
Finishing just five seconds off Tyler in fourth place was Declan and Zoe Dwyer, however the duo also came away with the P6 class win, while Daren Herring and Matthew Woods rounded out the top five a further 50 seconds off, but claimed the Walky 500 Trophy.

The duo managed to comfortably win the event’s final three stages, however it was too little too late as they ultimately finished more than a minute off Pohlner and 10 seconds off the second placed Admiraal.
Tyler and Fisher on the other hand, recorded competitive times on the first three stages but fell significantly behind on the fourth completed stage when they finished more than one minute slower than Pohlner.
Admiraal and co-driver Matthew Heywood started off strongly with victory on the first stage before Pohlner bounced back in style to win the next three stages.

WHAT AMBASSADORSTHE SAID
Photo: Chantel Collins
“I think one of the fantastic things about motorsport is the community and how helpful it is and how it's like a family. There are so many different aspects of the sport that you can be involved in, so I think girls should come in with an open mind, give everything a go, say yes to new opportunities and learn as much as possible. It is a tough sport, so it does require a lot of work to be successful, but to be a part of that is just the best.”
"My advice to girls looking to get into the motorsport industry is to just put yourself out there, don't be afraid of asking questions, networking, speaking to other women in the industry and basically putting your hand up for anything, you don't know where that opportunity may lead you in the future.”
"My advice to other girls is to just apply for Girls on Track. It’s a once in a lifetime experience, I highly recommend it.”
“I hope the girls that come to the pathway events can realise there are a lot of different roles they can play, it sort of takes a lot of different people. Also, the power of networking and motorsport is a lot about relationships so we always tell the girls to really use this time to find out who and get names so they can stay in touch.”
“After everything today, I’ve taken home how to network and how to get into the actual motorsport career side of it,” Nikaiya said.
“It’s also rewarding to see the younger generation become involved and see their passion for motorsport grow.”
Hubbard is now a proud member of the Rover Scout Motorsport Club — a club that was created for members of Victorian Scouts who have a passion for motorsport.

Since 2013, Lucy Hubbard has been involved in motorsport as a Motorsport Australia official in various roles, from event secretary to event chair.
“Throughout my involvement, I have ensured that the young scouting section has been introduced to motorsport and have shown what opportunities that the sport holds with leadership and professional training,” Hubbard said.

Last year an Ernst & Young (EY) report was released highlighting the economic contribution of four-wheeled motorsport in Australia, with Arocca addressing the report to endorse his claims.

Earlier this year, the NSW Land and Environment Court ruled that Wakefield Park could only operate a limited number of motorsport meetings per year.
Motorsport Australia is continuing in its efforts to encourage the New South Wales Government to assist in finding a solution to the current situation concerning the restrictions placed on Wakefield Park Raceway.

This would no doubt have cost millions –we say, investing some of that money in Australian motorsport makes a lot of sense when you consider that it generates nearly $1B per annum of economic output in NSW, and that was on the basis of only one premier track.
Despite the impending closure of Wakefield Park, Motorsport Australia will continue to assist in lobbying for the return of motorsport activity at the venue.
The imposed restrictions, which were limited to 30 days per year, would make it difficult for the circuit to remain financially viable, forcing the operators, the Benalla Auto Club, to close the circuit on 1 September, 2022.

Although their dominant run of ARC round wins came to an end after breaking down earlier in the rally, Harry and McCarthy claimed some redemption on Sunday, winning all five stages, including the EROAD Power stage, where he beat Lewis and McRae.
Bates wasn’t the only driver to claim a career-best result this weekend as runner-up Troy Dowel and the third placed Max McRae both enjoyed their first ever ARC podiums.

The championship leaders were dominating the field and held a lead of more than one and half minutes, until a broken drive shaft on stage six saw their day end early and out of the running.
The opening day of event provided plenty of chaos, as Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia’s Lewis Bates and Anthony McLoughlin led the rally after eight stages.
Alongside co-driver Anthony McLoughlin, Bates was highly consistent throughout a dramatic 13-stage rally of high attrition, as he charged to a two and a half minute outright victory.
Harry’s mechanical woes allowed Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia teammates Lewis and McLoughlin to move to the overall lead at the conclusion of day one.
In what ended up an intense battle for the outright podium positions, very little separated Dowel and McRae throughout the second half of the rally, however it was the former who eventually prevailed.

“It’s nice to get a good result for the team. It’s unfortunate that Harry and John didn’t have much luck yesterday but I’m glad we could get the victory for the team, as well as getting
handed the class lead late in the rally when Ryan Williams and Brad Jones suffered a DNF after hitting a rock on the penultimate stage. It was a lead short-lived for the Queenslanders, who were elevated to first in class after Scott Pedder and Chris Randell were forced to retire overnight.
“The strategy was to try and get a good rhythm in the first two stages, I think we did a pretty good job of that, we extended our lead and then just sort had to sit on that this afternoon.”
In the ARC Classic Cup, Brendan Reeves was the only finisher for the weekend, steering his Datsun P510 to outright sixth place in the process.

However, De Pasquale’s teammate Will Davison stood up as the biggest challenger, taking out Saturday’s qualifying session.

Having picked up a clean sweep of wins during last year’s visit to Sandown International Raceway, van Gisbergen would have hoped to replicate those same results in this year’s three races.
Both van Gisbergen and Davison were the stars of Sunday’s two qualifying sessions, grabbing a pole position each, but it was the former who enjoyed dominant victory for the second race of the event.
