THE WILDCARDS Unlike the past two years, there will be two wildcard entries this year with Walkinshaw Andretti United to enter another car in the race. The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 returns this month for its 62nd edition and the 2019 event seems to be shaping up as a big one. Ahead of the iconic race, Speed Read looks at some of the key information needed to enjoy the day.
THE RACE As always, fans will be be treated to non-stop action as the 26 cars cut 161 laps around the famous Mount Panorama Circuit punching in up to 1000 competitive kilometres. The Great Race will once again host the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship’s full field alongside experienced and skilled teammates who will be looking at helping their teammates gain valuable points in the Championship.
The team has brought in the big guns for the race, calling on two IndyCar stars in Alexander Rossi and James Hinchcliff. Making their Bathurst debuts, the duo will be behind the wheel of the team’s spare ZB Commodore chassis, which has been unused in 2019. The other wildcard comes in the form of Kostecki Brothers Racing and multiple Bathurst and Supercars Champion team manager Rob Crawford will be in charge of the entry. Held with driving responsibilities are Brodie Kostecki and Jake Kostecki, with the pair locked in for the team's PIRTEK Enduro Cup assault - starting with this month's big event.
The race also welcomes the debut of the in-car warning lights system, a process which has been included as an additional safety measure allowing key flag information to be beamed directly to the cars, adding to the physical trackside flag points. This year, the drivers are predicting the elusive six hour barrier to broken after last year’s close shave. With a number of records already surpassed this year pending the amount of deployed safety cars, the record is on track to be beaten.
LAST TIME THEY MET Last year proved to be a thrilling contest with a happy ending as Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards defied the odds to take out a win – the last in Lowndes’ illustrious career as a full-time driver. The duo were magnificent throughout the famous event with smart strategy and fast driving the contributing factors behind their rise up the field and eventual victory – the Triple Eight Holden Commodore crossing the finish line in six hours and one minute. While the pair’s eight place climb seemed impressive enough, it was the second placed duo of Scott Pye and Warren Luff who left viewers stunned, gaining an incredible 16 places throughout the event to move from 18th to second and finishing just six seconds behind the leaders. Rounding out the podium was Scott McLaughlin and Alexandre Premat, with McLaughlin’s third place the catalyst for his eventual title charge against Shane van Gisbergen in the Supercars championship pointscore.

David Reynolds was the other to walk away in the records books, posting a lap time of two minutes and six seconds. While McLaughlin posted a time three seconds faster in the 2017 top-ten shootout, Reynolds takes the cake for an in race lap.
The Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 takes place in the New South Wales town of Bathurst on 10–13 October with the main race to kick off at 11.30am on Sunday 13 October AEST.

HISTORY MADE IN RECORD BREAKING SANDOWN 10 CAMS SPEED READ
It was a Shannons Nationals round that will always be remembered – not just for all the action on the track, but for everything else off it. Taking place at Sandown Raceway, it was the perfect setting for what will go down in history as the first ever official race for the brand new S5000 series and the biggest crowd at a Shannons Nationals round. International stars including former Formula 1 driver Rubens Barrichello, along with a string of local talents such as John Martin and Tim Macrow, all put together an entertaining show as the first ever S5000 competitors. While Barrichello was the obvious star power, it was Supercars driver James Golding who was the star of the round - the youngster
claiming the victory just days after being announced as a driver in the category's first ever meeting. It wasn’t just Golding who stole the show throughout the weekend, with Will Brown claiming the inaugural carsales TCR Australia Series title after a frantic round of racing dominated by the world class Nestor Girolami, the Argentine grabbing three wins from three races. Brown was just one of a few drivers to secure their respective titles at the iconic circuit, as teen sensation Broc Feeney came away with the Kuhmo Tyres Super3 series win after beating fellow contender Jayden Ojeda in the category’s season finale.
From the youngest title winner to the oldest – reigning CAMS Australian GT Champion Geoff Emery secured the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship alongside veteran Garth Tander after placing second in a entertaining three-leg enduro. Interestingly, none of the three title winners won the round in their respective categories, but had accumulated enough points over the weekend to seal the deal over their rivals. Other round victors saw Aaron Love close in on Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia leader Harri Jones ahead of the category’s final round in November, while Colby Cowham
and Lindsay Kearns enjoyed a well deserved round win in the MRF Tyres Australian Production Car Series after two-time race winner Rick Bates had suffered issues in earlier races. The event also incorporated Shannons Nationals’ charity partner, Very Special Kids – with 10 per cent of all ticket sales going to the organisation, as well as extra donations that were collected at the venue and online. The final Shannons Nationals in 2019 will take place at The Bend Motorsport Park for the second time this year on 15-17 November.

GRANGER CHAMPION IN THRILLING KHANACROSS TITLE FIGHT The 2019 CAMS M.I.D Support Australian Khanacross Championship has been run and won with Chris Granger taking out the top prize after a brilliant come-from-behind performance. Set across two locations in New South Wales being Ringwood Motorsport Park and Awabawac Park, the championship saw 40 drivers from around the country undergo 14 tests on both gravel and tarmac surfaces. With the tarmac tests occurring first, Granger trailed Bill Brown for the whole first day, battling for second place against other contenders Brad Clarke and Evan Vale. While it looked like Brown was going to run away with the championship, Granger finally got his first test win on the 10th test for the weekend, the victory inspiring his mighty comeback in which he won the remaining four tests. His late surge in the final stages, along with Brown suffering mechanical issues, set up his memorable victory, as Granger replaced the leader with just one stage remaining, while Clarke rounded out the podium Following the thrilling victory in the car built by his father, a surprised Granger was happy to come away as champion. “It was a bit of a surprise really. I didn’t expect to come out on top but overall I am elated with the result and extremely happy,” Granger said. “Bill (Brown) had me in day one and I was just trying to minimise the damage. But on Sunday, our car really shined due to the conditions being a little moist which helped me get back in. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to catch Bill on Sunday but unfortunately for him, he had those issues, which paved the way a little bit for me to come through. “That’s all part of it though, you need to make it through every test and the preservation on Saturday must of helped me, as I was able to break away on Sunday.” The other notable results were 11th placed Heath Barry taking out the junior title and Stephanie Brown being the fastest female throughout the day.

TEAM AUSTRALIA LOCKED IN In late September, CAMS revealed Australia’s representatives for the inaugural FIA Motorsport Games to take place in Rome in November.
Leeds was the standout performer in this year’s Australian Formula 4 Championship, impressing on many of Australia’s best circuits.
Team Australia will compete in three categories, with CAMS and Australia represented in the GT, Formula 4 and Esports events.
Latkovski has seen plenty of success during his Esports career, having been a part of the FIA Gran Turismo Sport Championships since 2018. Latkovski, who races under the username ‘Nik_Makozi’ is the most awarded sim driver in the Asia-Oceania region.
Stephen and Brenton Grove will wear the Australian colours in the GT category, backing up their efforts at the FIA GT Nations Cup in 2018. The duo have accomplished plenty during their respective careers, and in 2019 became the first father-son pairing in history to compete in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup. Reigning CAMS Australian Formula 4 Champion Luis Leeds will proudly represent Australia in a Formula 4 car, while global Esports star Cody Nikola Latkovski will look to do his country proud on the simulator.

The FIA Motorsports Games is a brand new concept for 2019, with medals awarded to the top three finishers of each category. All races will be hosted at the ACI Vallelunga Circuit near Rome, with the opening ceremony for the FIA Motorsport Games to be held on 31 October, with the racing to get underway on 1 November.

Category: GT Cup Currently Racing: Stephen Grove - Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Brenton Grove - Dunlop Super2 Series Vehicle: Porsche GT3-R When Stephen and Brenton Grove head to Rome this year, it won’t be the first time they will fly the Australian flag at an international event. The father-son team has enjoyed a colourful history in GT racing and the duo were able to show their skills off at last year’s inaugural FIA GT 2018 Nations Cup in Bahrain. While they didn’t get the chance to strut their stuff during the race after being a victim of a rival’s crash, they showed a heap of promise and built the appetite to get there once again. In November, they get to have another crack at some of the world’s best GT drivers and Porsche PAYCE Carrera Cup driver Stephen is raring to get back out on the world stage, despite never having been to the Italian track. “After doing the FIA GT Nations Cup last year, we were pretty determined to come back the following year and push on from where we had really good momentum in 2018.” Stephen said.
“It was really important for Brenton and I to go back and try and improve on the unfortunate circumstances we had last year in the main race.
“To be quick at Vallelunga you need to be fairly committed, so I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
“Driving with Brenton helps a lot because we both understand the way each other drives. It really helps us with the car set-up, but it’s good because we can work together and we can understand what makes either of us a bit quicker and how we can tweak the car to get it right. “Vallelunga is a track neither of us has been to, but the bits I’ve seen looking at video, it’s a pretty technical track and there’s a fair bit in that track. To be quick there you need to be fairly committed, so I’m looking forward to the challenge, but it’s quite a hard track." For Brenton, who is having a solid season in the 2019 Dunlop Super2 series, the Motorsport games is another opportunity to represent Australia and put last year’s unfortunate incident behind them.
“Once again it was really just having the opportunity through CAMS and the FIA to participate. We put forth our case from CAMS and said we had some unfinished business from last year and there was a reason why we wanted to go back,” Brenton said. “I think racing with my dad always helps with an event like this because we’ve done so much together, even when we’re not racing we’re always chatting to each other so we definitely know our strengths and weaknesses together. “For us to be representing the country on the GT side is a privilege and it’s something that we take very seriously. We’re making sure we prepare well and do the best we can to represent Australia and hopefully go one or two steps better than we did last year.”

There will be a lot of drivers around the world heading to this year’s FIA Motorsport Games full of confidence and Luis Leeds will be one of them. The Victorian has enjoyed a stellar year on the track after taking out the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship in style, starting out with a round victory at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2019. Leeds carried his Albert Park momentum throughout the year to dominate the championship and storm home to a maiden title with a round still remaining.

In the E-sports world, Cody Nikola Latkovski is a driver who isn’t fazed by the international stage and would be considered as one of the country’s finest gamer exports. Outside of being one of the most successful Australian sim drivers in recent years, Latkovski boasts the record of being the most decorated Asia-Oceania players to compete. Playing under the username of Nik_Makozi, Latkovski had a busy year in 2018, taking part in the AsiaOceania Regional Final in Tokyo before placing third in the FIA Gran Turismo Championships World Final in Monaco. He continued his good form into this year – where he picked up a number of Oceania region titles in the FIA GT Championships 2019, his most notable being the Nations Cup, Manufacturers Series and the GR Supra GT Cup Series. In November, he will once again get a serious crack at the world title after qualifying for the World Finals,

The first of two special events took place at the Melbourne International Karting Complex in Port Melbourne where groups from Middle Park, Glen Waverley and Cheltenham Primary Schools, along with employees and friends from carsales got an insight into the wonderful world of motor sport. While the groups participated in the popular activities that take place at most D2BD events, including the STEM and pit stop challenges, the participants switched the simulator for the kart as they got to cut laps in a go-kart on one of Victoria’s most popular karting tracks. Overseeing the program was a host of D2BD ambassadors including Triple Eight’s Romy Mayer, Erebus’ Bonnie Beard, carsales’ Nadine Armstrong and Nissan Motorsport’s data engineer Nikki Staltari, as well as Solve Consulting and Karting Australia. On the other side of the city the following day, another lucky group of females were given a special behind the scenes look at life at a race meeting during the Shannons Nationals’ latest round at Sandown International Raceway. On top of doing the usual activities, the females were back on the Motum Simulator, posting laps on the world’s most famous race tracks, an activity which has proven quite popular in the past. Adding to the experience, the young females got an exclusive tour into the garages of the competing categories, including the carsales TCR Australia Series and the brand new S5000 Series cars. The D2BD participants also got access onto the iconic race track ahead of each category’s daily race to take part in the grid walk and get up close and personal with the cars and drivers. The Dare To Be Different program moves to Queensland for its next event, taking place at Virgin Australia Supercars Championship team Triple Eight Race Engineering’s headquarters on 17 October.

RICCIARDO’S RACERS ENJOY SPRING FEVER During the September/October school holidays, Ricciardo’s Racers had held two sold out programs in Victoria and Queensland. With Sandown Raceway hosting the final Victorian based event for 2019 during the Shannons Nationals visit to the Victorian circuit, Australian teenagers took part in level one and two courses.

A few days later, the program went up north to Norwell Motorplex for the first and only visit to Queensland in 2019 as the particpating teenagers also completed a level one and two course. Only four more events remain until the end of the year with New South Wales to host their final two programs early this month, while Tasmanians get their first visit on 12 October.

SUCC SHOCK IN VICTORIAN CLUB CHALLENGE

In one of the most thrilling CAMS Club Challenge Australia contests yet, SUCC Motorsport has broken the Gippsland Club Club’s (GCC) stronghold over the Victorian competition. Throughout the 2019 edition, it looked like the GCC were going to enjoy top honours once again, with their teams sitting in the top three at the halfway stage. However, a late surge from SUCC in the final two runs, led by Daniel Leitner in a Subaru WRX, saw them leapfrog the Gippsland based teams and grab top spot. The team managed to hold on to their lead for the remainder of the event and secure what was an unforgettable victory - their first after entering every CAMS Club Challenge since its inauguration. The host club took out the next spot in the standings with GCC Team Two ending up as runner-ups over the Gippsland Gemini Club's Motorsport 1, who just edged out GCC Team One for the final spot on the podium. Winning the individual performance for the day was the Gippsland Gemini Owners Club Club’s Salvatore Fichera, who posted the fastest time of the day with a 1:16.36 lap time, almost six seconds faster than the next best drivers. It was a tie for second place with Peter Bartold from The Fiat Car Club of Victoria’s and Hayden Wilde from the Victorian 86/ BRZ’s D Team sharing the spoils – remarkably neither driver could inspire their teams though with Bartold and the Scuderia X1/9 team finishing eighth and Wilde’s four-entry team finishing last. The CAMS Club Challenge Victoria moves up north next month with the MG Car Club of Queensland hosting the penultimate event for 2019 at Mount Cotton on 5 October.

KHANAKIDS SHINE
Since its creation in 2017, the 500 Car Club of Tasmania’s Khanakids program has played a pivotal role developing Tasmanian teenagers for their solid driving techniques in a safe environment.
With around 130 young Australians taking part in the program since its inauguration, the club decided to shake things up at their latest event in September by running an all-female session. All 12 participants in the latest KhanaKids initiative were females, as well as the five instructors on hand, all of which have a wealth of experience behind them on track and as officials, including Formula Vee champion Michelle Fish and 2018 Ling rookie runner up Kylie-Jane Chapel. Despite the hot conditions throughout the event proving quite challenging for the participants, the heat failed to disrupt the young female's enthusiasm with most of them getting in the driver's seat for the first time in their lives. 28

As the day went on, the participants improved significantly, getting the hang of their cars and learning important information on how to maintain their car, including changing tyres. The participants were also treated to a show from three junior khanacross competitors in Sarah Wright, Georgie Creese and Holly Taylor, with all three jumping behind the wheel themselves and navigating the short track as fast as they could. It was a day enjoyed by all participants and instructors with the club to hold its next event for both male and female teenagers on 2 November and 2 December.

ADELAIDE HILLS CROWNS ITS CHAMPION ELECT
Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia’s Harry Bates and John McCarthy have capped off victory in the Adelaide Hills Rally by also wrapping up the 2019 CAMS Australian Rally Championship in South Australia. The eventual champions began the event with a bang, comfortably taking out The Bend Motorsport Park Super Special Stages, before extending their gap throughout the remainder of the first heat.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the pair in the second heat though, with variable weather conditions making setup and tyre choice difficult throughout the opening stages, while factory rivals Molly Taylor and Malcolm Read broke their dominance to win the first two stages. However, the eventual champions got back on track and won every heat after to take out both the rally and the whole championship.
“It was an incredible day and our team were here to see it. It was all very special,” Bates said. “I’m completely lost for words at the moment - I can’t quite believe it.” Co-Driver McCarthy praised the competition. “Everyone speaks very highly of the talent we have in Australia,” McCarthy said. “We’ve got a good championship and it deserves to grow. We should be pretty proud of ourselves.”

Throughout the whole event, Taylor and Read were locked in a dog fight for second place against Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia’s Lewis Bates and Anthony McLoughlin – with the former coming out on top after a lighting second heat. A fast Sunday by AGI Sport’s Luke Anear saw the Tasmanian the fastest R5 in fourth overall in his Fiesta, ahead of West Australia’s John O’Dowd in the Skoda Fabia R5. The spectacular Nissan Silvia of Trevor Stilling and Larisa Biggar claimed ARC 2WD round honours ahead of Stephen Mee and Rhys Llewellyn, and Ethan Pickstock and Lisi Phillips. The final round of the CAMS Australian Rally Championship takes place on the Coffs Coast for Kennards Hire Rally Australia in November.

SEASON FINALE ON THE HORIZON The CAMS DEWALT Australian SXS Championship is set for up for a classic later this month when the championship heads to Caveat for the highly anticipated Grand Final. It’s been a huge season so far as three different drivers have won all three rounds, with Simon Evans, Ewan McClue and Toby Price all grabbing their victories in their first attempts. Last year’s epic final round saw Evans crowned champion for the first time, despite not taking part in the round’s final race, a race which went right down to the wire, so there is every chance that this round will end in the same fashion. In the box seat for the 2019 title is James Shipp, with the Polaris pilot on 176 points, his best result being a runner-up in Canberra

earlier this year. In that same round, current runner-up Tim Liston had a disappointing day, which put a dent in his title chances. The SXS Sport leader has publicly announced his desire to overthrow the Turbo drivers from their throne, but with eight points separating him and Shipp, he will need to be at his best in the season finale. In third place and one of the only other realistic chances to steal the title is Jackson Evans, however having not finished on the podium once this year, it’s going to be a big ask for him. If any previous years have taught us anything, it is to expect the unexpected when it comes to the SXS Championship, so prepare for every driver to give their all in those five heats.

Shipp is in a nice position and has one hand on the trophy already but he needs to make sure he is in the round’s final race. Should both he and Liston make it in the final, then Shipp just needs to finish in the top five to be crowned 2019 champion. Anything less than a final race berth and he will be in the same position as Simon Evans last year – his title in the hands of his rivals.

DEDICATED TO DEVELOPMENT The Maffra and District Car Club has continued their longstanding commitment to developing future drivers, holding another successful CAMS Junior Driver Development day. Taking place at the Boisdale Hillclimb complex, the club holds three sessions a year designed to give young Australians a wide range of experience behind the wheel. Under the guidance of experienced drivers, the participants were divided into different groups based on their ability and confidence and rotated amongst four courses. The teenagers would then undergo testing with car control, parking, braking tests and hill starts all part of the skills obtained during the program.

With the program built off the back of the Club Development Fund initiative, MADCC Secretary Stuart Henderson believed the CDF was responsible for assisting the program. COUNTERFEITS COULD COST YOU YOUR LIFE A worrying trend has emerged in the safety equipment market, with a number of counterfeit safety devices being made available for sale. Products such as counterfeit seatbelts will not save you in the event of an accident, as a recent real life example where it is claimed.
An example of how counterfeit equipment is likely to not be able to withstand the forces of a motor sport incident.
Not only are counterfeit products illegal, but they could also cost competitors their life. A recent accident has highlighted the dangers when safety products fail and in this instance, the driver was flung around the vehicle upon impact after colliding with a tyre barrier. CAMS is urging all competitors to be vigilant when purchasing this vital equipment, including checking the existing equipment in your vehicle to ensure it is the genuine product.

FHR REMINDER
GET KITTED OUT FOR 2020 CAMS members are reminded of the regulations surrounding the mandatory use of Frontal Head Restraints (FHR) in Speed Events from 2020 Anyone racing a 1st category vehicle, or car with a CAMS logbook which applies a Race, Rally/Road, Off Road or 5th Category classification, and used in an event applicable to its Log Book classification, requires the mandatory use of a FHR. The use of FHR will not become mandatory in Speed Events for competitors who will be participating in events without the mandatory use of additional equipment such as a safety cage, safety harness or competition-style seat, such as using a road registered vehicle at a club’s ‘come and try day’. All competitors are encouraged to follow this recommendation in 2019, but it will become compulsory in 2020.

The name Joshua Car may not sound familiar to many Australian motor sport fans, but he is certainly growing a reputation in the United States. Last month, in just his second season in the United States Formula 4 Championship, Car was crowned the 2019 champion with one round still to go. It’s been a brilliant year behind the wheel for the teenager who has picked up six wins out of 15 races thus far, as well as another eight podium finishes. “To win the championship was mega really,” Car said. “I’ve been with my team for the past two years. We're working really hard with testing to get as quick as possible. "At the start of the year, my goal was to have a big crack at winning the championship. I got the lead in the second round and as the year went on, the gap sort of grew. “I’ve come a long way to be here and I don’t have any of my family here, just the people who have taken me on board, so to win was a big relief and it gives me hope on the future to try and push on and make something out of myself."

Growing up as a successful karter on home soil for more than 10 years, Car made the difficult decision to head overseas and try his hand at international karting a few years back.
“I always considered racing in Australia but I never had the funding or the opportunity to do so. I had interest in me, but not enough so I was quite fortunate with the US offer.
"I am just going to try and win at the categories I compete in but I am definitely focused on trying to do well and then try to open more doors in the future.
It was a decision that ended up paying off.
“Now that I have won the championship, I get a scholarship into the Formula 3 championship which is what I am doing next year and hopefully it leads to more success.”
“If I can have a good crack at the F3 championship next year, then I will have some good stats next to my name and we will try and work towards Indy car.”
At the end of the day though, Car is just your average motor sport fan who dares to dream about what could be.
The final round of the US Formula 4 Championship takes place as part of the 2019 US Grand Prix on 1-3 November.
After winning one of the biggest karting events in world, the 2017 Supernationals in Las Vegas, Car was offered a golden opportunity to stay in the US and race Formula 4 for Kiwi Motorsport. Two years after signing that contract, Car is now a national champion with a free ticket into the country’s Formula 3 Championship next year. “After the Vegas victory, I got a really good to offer from Patrick Flynn to race here in the US and I couldn’t turn it down,” Car added.
“I followed the top tiers of motor sport ever since I was young. I have always been looking and motivated to make it to the top and compete against the best and that’s what I feel like I am doing," Car explained. “My goal is to go towards the Indy car or LMP route - whatever takes me.

More than 50 cars and bikes have tackled the Sunraysia Safari Cross Country in the dusty rural regions of Wentworth, Pooncarie, Euston and Greater Darling Anabranch across four days of exciting action. As competitors covered more than 1200 competitive kilometres in what is the largest and longest rally in Australia, the 55 crews were tested in the harsh conditions throughout all four days. At the end of the gruelling event, it was Glenn Owen and Matthew Ryan who enjoyed victory, posting the fastest time in the first three days and effectively sealing the win with a day still to go.
The duo failed to post the fastest time on the final day of action, coming in ninth place, with the day's top honours going to Jason Noonan and Sam Sapuppo, while New South Welshmen Josh Wilson and Adam Bensch finished behind them in second. Heading into the final day as contenders for the outright victory, Wilson and Besch’s final day result wasn’t enough to secure them a runner-up position, with West Australians John Purshouse and Murray Hynes finishing second instead. After taking out the final day, Noonan and Sapuppo managed
to pick up a well-deserved fourth place ahead of Jake Freckleton and David Burford who rounded out the top five. In the bikes, victory went to Jacob Smith who finished a thrilling 40 seconds ahead of Toby Hederics. Finishing almost an hour slower in third place was Matthew Gillespie.

VALE WARREN GRACIE “He was the most calm and calculated bloke... I never saw him get frustrated” - Ron Gillard
CAMS is saddened to learn of the recent passing of Warren Gracie. Born in 1936, Warren will forever be known as one of the top stewards in New South Wales after being involved with the sport for more than 50 years. As a proud owner of an Austin Seven, Warren got into motor sport in his younger years through the Austin Sevens Club of NSW, a club where he later became president.
His most notable result came in 1969 where he and Gillard picked up a well deserved class win, as well as coming 14th outright against the likes of Peter Brock, Allan Moffat, Colin Bond and Kevin Bartlett.
While he was heavily involved in his beloved club, he will be also be remembered for the work he did on the other side of the fence as a steward.
As someone who was involved in some of Warren's best racing days, Gillard paid tribute to his best man for his wedding day 48 years ago.
His passion and dedication for the sport saw him progress up the officials ranks quickly and was handed a grade one stewarding license soon after he got involved.
“He was the most calm and calculated bloke and was a very good thinker. He always thought things through very well and I never saw him get frustrated and cranky due to his ability to control his emotions, ” Gillard explained.
After excelling in his early days as a steward, it wasn’t long until he was requested to attend Bathurst, which in turn made him the youngest individual to ever steward at the iconic event. Warren was also entrusted with educating future stewards and became known to as go-to person for training in his state of NSW. His reputation continued to grow, often being referred to as the state’s best steward who operated with the upmost professionalism. Apart from being a steward, he was also worked in the tribunal as a prosecutor and always sat on the investigative tribunal panel.

Despite making a name for himself as a highly reputable CAMS steward, Warren was just as fierce as a racer, entering Bathurst on multiple occasions in the late 1960s alongside Ron Gillard in a Mini Cooper S.
“In the 1969 race, no one gave us a chance but we knew we would be able to win this class and his knowledge and attitude definitely helped us get the class win. “He was very knowledgeable and he was sort of person who thought before he opened his mouth.
