BELIEF BREAKS BARRIERS The second edition of Motorsport Australia’s online FIA Girls On Track program has been completed with carsales Consumer Editor Nadine Armstrong hosting a successful oneon-one chat with Erebus Motorsport Managing Director Shannen Kiely. The live chat was hosted on Motorsport Australia’s Instagram channel and the duo discussed a range of topics, highlighting women in motorsport. “I think people potentially see that (barriers in motorsport for women) but I feel that if girls have belief in themselves and they want to do it, they can,” Kiely said. “There is no reason they can’t. It’s just about belief in themselves to want to go and do it. “I think that even though my role is my role and we are smaller in numbers in the current climate, I have been doing everything to help the team in any way that I can. Whether it’s running to the truck to

get a part that I have no idea about, or helping the team in the garage. “First you start believing in yourself and then others will believe in you. “I think you can never be too old to do something in motorsport. Whether you want to compete as a driver at a young age or an old lady who wants to volunteer at Winton at the local state round. There is always an opportunity, you just need to find it.” With the Girls on Track initiative introducing different aspects of motorsport to young girls around the country, Kiely also highlighted the amount in women of the sport who aren’t in the spotlight. “I certainly see girls around the paddock, whether that is at club level or national level,” Kiely added. “I think with a program like Girls on Track, you are seeing more of those girls as a face because they are getting to see more behind the scenes.

“But I feel that if girls have belief in themselves and they want to do it, they can” - Shannen Kiely, Erebus Motorsport Managing Director

“The engineers and drivers are the face of the teams but there are so many people behind the scenes. Especially with my team, I think we had 27 people in Adelaide this year and seven of them were women, so the percentage is actually alright.” Armstrong and Kiely’s one-on-one chat was the second chat as part of Motorsport Australia’s online FIA Girls On Track program, with 2016 RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Champion Molly Taylor and Triple Eight Racing’s Jessica Dane featuring last month.

CRASHTAG:

INNOVATIVE NEW APP TO BOOST MOTORSPORT SAFETY The Australian Institute of Motor Sport Safety (AIMSS) has launched a ground-breaking new mobile app, Crashtag.

Crashtag will change the way motorsport crash data is captured and analysed – ultimately improving safety at all levels of motorsport, from grassroots through to international events at the highest level. Notably, the app does not replace current Motorsport Australia reporting processes for officials, who must still attend to incidents as they have previously – instead this app is an extra tool designed to capture incidents from events to be analysed at a later time for the benefits of global motorsport safety.

Developed in Australia and already scheduled to go global in the fourth quarter of 2020, the new Crashtag app is now available free, on the Apple Store and Google Play (Android), following intense testing and development using Australian expertise.

Users of the free app will be able to easily upload information and photos of motorsport incidents and crashes. Crashtag will allow for detailed reporting on the scene of a motorsport incident, which will have significant benefits to global safety research. AIMSS Chair Garry Connelly AM said "Crashtag will revolutionise motorsport safety and allow us to analyse crash and medical injury data like never before. If organisers and officials wish, the app will ultimately replace the need for paper reports".

"AIMSS and the FIA both perform incredible work to improve safety in motorsport using the existing crash data and injury reporting methods.

"Crashtag will further build upon and support that work, with improved data that can be provided directly from a crash site and uploaded to our secure servers, where motorsport's best and brightest safety researchers can investigate and learn lessons from each motorsport incident.

“Crashtag will revolutionise motorsport safety and allow us to analyse crash data like never before.” "Initially, we are aiming Crashtag at competitors and officials here in Australia, but in conjunction with the FIA we have broader plans for Crashtag. We foresee that ASNs around the globe and even spectators will be able to utilise Crashtag. We've seen in many incidents that spectators have recorded video or photos of crashes that might not be captured by anyone else. "Crashtag will reduce paperwork for officials and event organisers, and it will open reporting mechanisms for the first time to spectators.
Plans are being put in place for Crashtag to be rolled out in the United Kingdom, at least one country in Europe and Sri Lanka in 2020, before further expansion to more countries shortly thereafter. Connelly said that many organisations had supported the development of Crashtag, including the FIA, through the FIA Innovation Fund, AIMSS and Motorsport Australia.

Furthermore, Crashtag would not have been made possible but through the generous donations of Motorsport

Australia licence holders who donate a small amount of their licence fee when they renew their license. "I'd like to thank everyone who has helped us getting Crashtag up and running, in particular the FIA which has supported the app throughout the development phase. The FIA Innovation Fund’s support will allow Crashtag to be utilised at motorsport events around the world," he added.

Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca congratulated AIMSS on the release of Crashtag.

"Crashtag is an exciting development for motorsport, not just here in Australia, but around the world and AIMSS has done a terrific job in getting this app into the sport," Arocca said. "Motorsport Australia will actively promote Crashtag to our members, and we are certain that our competitors and officials will be among those to see a benefit from the app's development, changing the face of motorsport safety in the years ahead.

ABOUT AIMSS The Australian Institute for Motor Sport Safety (AIMSS), a not-for-profit organisation, was established in 2007 and is the peak body for motorsport safety and related research in Australia. AIMSS works in conjunction with Motorsport Australia in an advisory role and is a research partner of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) to develop safety through research, education and industry liaison. "Motorsport Australia will actively promote Crashtag to our members, and we are certain that our competitors and officials will be among those to see a benefit from the app's development, changing the face of motorsport safety in the years ahead."

INNOVATIVE INDIGENOUS PROGRAM GETS UNDERWAY IN NORWELL An innovative project to help young indigenous Australian people develop careers in motorsport takes place this month with a number of leading racing identities backing the project.

With Logan-based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation, Gunya Meta also involved, Racing Together is a pilot program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and boys aged between 12 and 16. The project has been conceived and underwritten by Brisbane couple Garry and Monique Connelly, who have extensive motorsport competition and administrative experience at international level, including with Motorsport Australia and the FIA. “Australian motorsport has not had any noticeable participation by our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” Connelly said during August’s launch. “Motorsport, like any sport, has enormous potential to provide a source of enjoyment, motivation, pride and employment to those who participate, be it as a driver, mechanic, race engineer or event official.” With Paul Morris offering significant assistance and support for the project, the Bathurst 1000 winner will run the events at Norwell Motorplex, starting with an open day on 3 October, where around 40 participants will undergo a series of tests and exercises, from racing in both a simulator and on track to tests on hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity and mock media interviews.

“The love of cars and racing have been a part of our culture for a long time and is often shared in our families gathering” - Michael Orcher, Gunya Meta indigenous mentor

Following on from the open day, successful candidates will then be identified to progress to an official two-day program at Norwell on 24-25 October, which will see a team driver and crew members selected to take part in an appropriate racing series next year. Not only will the team be supported with a competitive car for the series, but all technical and logistical facilities, tuition and travel costs will be covered, with the potential of team members to build their own car. “Gunya Meta is proud to work with Garry and Monique Connelly to deliver Racing Together, particularly because of how passionate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community is for motorsport," Gunya Meta indigenous mentor Michael Orcher added.

“The love of cars and racing have been a part of our culture for a long time and is often shared in our families gathering to watch races or even working together to make or fix cars. Often our Mob’s homes will have an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander flag right next to a motorsport flag. “With this amazing program we can finally connect our interest with the opportunity to get a foot in the door of this international industry. Racing Together will create a path for indigenous young people to gain experience and skills that might help make representation of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on the global motorsport stage a reality, something that has not been done before.” Should a suitable driver candidate be identified after at least one year of competition, funding would be provided for participation in the Ferrari Academy (Asia Pacific), including circuit racing in Sydney in an FIA Formula 4 single-seat race car. The project is supported by Motorsport Australia, which will provide permits and associated insurances.

NEW STATE OF THE ART MOTORSPORT FACILITY PROPOSED IN QUEENSLAND Motorsport in Queensland has received a major boost with plans for a permanent $175 million dollar motorsport facility and entertainment precinct in Toowoomba being recently announced. Proposed by the Wagner Corporation, the Wellcamp Entertainment Precinct will house a world class race track, road safety and driver education and training facilities, a 40,000-person venue for major events, business tourism and event facilities and on-site accommodation for up to 5000 people. With the new facility having potential to cater to all levels of Australian motorsport, from grassroots racing to the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said it was a significant moment for the sport in Queensland and Australia. “Motorsport desperately needs more permanent venues in this country, and one such as that planned by the Wagner family will bring enormous social, economic and community benefits to the people of the Darling Downs and Queensland in general,” Arocca said. “The circuit design has the potential for the venue to host international and even World Championship motorsport events, something sorely needed in this region. “Today’s announcement of a $40 million contribution by the Queensland Government is the largest investment by any government in a permanent racetrack in Australia’s history. The State Government clearly recognises the major economic benefits of motorsport in this country. On behalf of all motorsport lovers we thank the Government for its outstanding support of our sport in the Sunshine

state. This heralds a new era for Queensland motorsport and both the Palaszczuk Government and the Wagner family are to be congratulated for this historic announcement.” FIA President Jean Todt echoed Arocca’s comments surrounding the permanent race track, which will be named in honour of the Toowoomba’s most prolific motorsport export and be known as the ‘Will Power Centre for Motorsport and Driver Training Excellence’. ”Having visited your country (Australia) on many occasions, I am aware that there is an urgent need for more permanent motor racing facilities,” Todt added “The FIA is strongly supportive of this exciting project.” Expected to become one of the state’s large entertainment precincts,

the project will not just have a major influence on motorsport in Queensland, but will be a major boost for the town’s economy with up to 130 jobs to be created during construction and a further 2,500 once finished and events are regularly taking place. Estimated to cost around $175 million, the precinct has already received significant financial backing and support from the Queensland Government, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confident of its positive impact. “The Wagner family’s record of delivering world-class projects, especially in this region, is without peer,” Palaszczuk said. “Their vision, imagination and drive to succeed has turned paddocks into an international airport and trade distribution

centre that, with the support of my Government, is also home to the Qantas Group Pilot Academy. “Now, the Wagners are ready to take Wellcamp to an entirely to new level – a vision that the Palaszczuk Government backs.” Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick was also highly supportive of the proposed Wellcamp Entertainment Precinct. “This precinct would aim to attract major events right across the performing arts, business, tourism, sport and events sectors,” Dick explained. “We are committed to working with the community and business leaders like the Wagners in the Darling Downs to continue looking at creating more opportunities for future growth.

“The Palaszczuk Government supports the project with $40 million and today we call on the Federal Government to match this.”

With the Wagner family to invest $95 million of its own money, Chairman John Wagner was excited for the opportunity. “The Wagner family will invest with the state and federal governments support in the order of $95 million of our assets and funds into this project,” Wagner said. “We are keen to start construction early next year to help kick start the economy post COVID-19.” The Federal Government has now been called on to fund the remaining $40 million required to build this significant project.

QUINN CONQUERS BARRIER REEF Motorsport Australia GT Championship veteran Tony Quinn has added another piece of silverware to his impressive trophy cabinet after beating 50 crews in September’s Targa Great Barrier Reef. With a number of stars entered in the Motorsport Australia Targa Championship’s season opener around north Queensland, Quinn’s biggest threat came through RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship regular Luke Anear and co-driver Andy Sarandis, but Anear’s challenge was over when he ended up off the road and out of contention on the final day.

14

Anear’s exit from the event opened the door up for Speed Limited class winners Wayne Udy and Mia Williams to a surprise runners-up placing, while Andrew Horn and Sally Coning rounded out the podium, with the duo also securing the Dutton Garage Early Modern 4 class. For Quinn, it was a faultless performance behind the wheel of his 2018 Nissan GT-R R35 after the Queenslander had led the pack from day one. “We just kept it nice and clean on the long stages today and the rest took care of itself,” Quinn said.

MENZIES CONTINUES SOLID 2020 FORM WITH QRC WIN

Photos: John Stewart Photography

Ian Menzies and Bob McGowan have started the 2020 Innate Motorsport + Events Motorsport Australia Queensland Rally Championship (QRC) on a high after winning the Inspirations Paint Capalaba Hinterland Rally in September. Heading into the event full of confidence after winning a thrilling KCF Rallysport Short Course Challenge - Burnett Sprint #2 back in August, the duo had a far less dramatic stint behind the wheel of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9, comfortably taking out the rally by just under two minutes. With 50 crews taking part in the ninestage event, Menzies and McGowan faced a number of challenges during the day, but were able build on their lead as the event progressed after posting the fastest time on more than half of the stages. The battle for runner-up was a little closer as Ford Escort pilots Stewart Reid and Anthony McLoughlin lost the first two stages to Clay Badenoch and Kelly Catriona, before posting a faster time on the remaining stages to seal second place by just over a minute.

While 32 crews managed to finish every stage, there were 16 who didn’t and a few of whom were title favourites, including Glenn Brinkman and Steven Richardson who suffered mechanical issues, Gerard McConkey and Ben Logan who fell at the final hurdle and Erik Johnsson and Larisa Biggar who enjoyed the fastest time on the opening stage. Another high profile crew who was tipped to be in contention but also failed to finish was Tristan Carrigan and Neill Woolley, with the duo steering their Mitsubishi Evo 6 to one of the fastest times on the first stage before retiring on the next stage. It proved to be a difficult event for many, which made the win even sweeter for Menzies. “It was a nice feeling to win,” Menzies said. “We were looking to take the battle up to Glenn and we were happy to be able to match him on stage times, and until he suffered a mechanical, we were very slightly ahead, so that was satisfying. “The roads were rough and certainly on the first pass, very loose. Very different

to what we have experienced in the past. There was no recce to clean the roads off and we didn’t have a clean line either, so it was tough. “It sets us up nicely for the outright championship with only two rounds taking place in 2020, however we’re not counting our chickens just yet because the same bad luck that hit competitors at this event could come our way next event. “We will make sure the car is reliable and we won’t have to push as hard in the next event. We won’t be aiming to win, we just need to finish solidly to win the championship.” Other notable results saw Richard Harris and Hugh Reardon-Smith win the Novice Series, Michael Gill and Ryan McKinnon take out the junior title and Conner Oldam won the Clubman Series alongside Colin O’Brien. The 2020 Innate Motorsport + Events Motorsport Australia Queensland Rally Championship continues later this month with the Roo Systems Australia Manumbar Rally on 31 October.

LCCC READY FOR MONARO STAGES AFTER BIG SEPTEMBER It was a busy September for the Light Car Club of Canberra (LCCC) with the club running two major events during the month in preparation for its biggest annual event - the Kosciuszko Automotive Monaro Stages. Kicking off the September action was the club’s popular 2020 Blue Range Rallysprint, which saw 24 entries, including a number of high-profile New South Wales and Canberra based rally drivers, post five runs on two courses. But it was the biggest name of them all who ended up taking out the event’s top honours, with four-time RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Champion (ARC) Neal Bates and

18

co-driver Anthony Caldwell enjoying a 28-second outright victory over current ARC regular Andrew Penny and co-driver Jaclyn Sharkey.

Event Clerk of Course Peter Stringfellow was pleased the rallysprint could get up and running as well as be a resounding success.

The two crews were neck and neck throughout the event, with Penny and Sharkey leading by six seconds at the midway point before Bates showed his class and was faster in all of the second heat’s runs to give him the outright win.

“Amidst the craziness of 2020, it was great to be able to get back out in the forest and do what we enjoy,” Stringfellow said.

Rounding out the podium a further 30 seconds behind was Stuart Collison and Lance Arundel after the duo battled hard against the fourth placed Mike Behnke and Ellie Yates.

“It was a beautiful day and feedback from competitors was that it was an enjoyable event. We had a really vast range of entries, from the legendary Neal Bates through to competitors like Evan Pyne and Erin Barke who ran in their first ever rally event.

“A big thank you to all the officials who made the event possible and congratulations to Neal and Anthony on their 2WD and outright win, as well as Andrew and Jaclyn for their 4WD class win.” A few weeks later, Stringfellow and the club were back at it with the second round of the National Patios Motorsport Australia ACT Khanacross Series, which also had a healthy 24 drivers entered. With each competitor completing 12 tests, it was an extremely tight battle at the top of the standings with Ryan Freeman edging out Tim Henneberger by just two seconds. Like the Blue Range Rallysprint, barely anything could separate the top two competitors, with multiple lead changes within the first six stages, but once Freeman got the lead back on the sixth, he never

looked back despite a large charge from the eventual runner-up. Comfortably finishing in third place behind the front duo was Evan Pyne, who had managed to claim a few test wins for himself. Other notable results saw the seventh placed Max Finnemore take out the best rookie award and one place below him was the fastest female In Dot Gibson, while the fastest junior Austin Turner ended up ninth. “The National Patios ACT Khanacross series is LCCC’s entry-level events it provides a great introduction to the sport and enables juniors to compete against seasoned drivers,” Stringfellow said post event. “A fantastic effort from all competitors, especially Ryan and Tim who were highly entertaining all day.”

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR AORC As the 2020 Motorsport Australia Off Road Cups draw closer, several competitors are looking to the special events to prepare for their future BFGoodrich Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship campaigns. West Australian Beau Robinson will be one of the AORC regulars who will compete this month at the same event he won last year, the Kalgoorlie Desert Race. On the other side of the spectrum, eight-time AORC champion Mark Burrows is stuck in Victoria, meaning the reigning champion is unlikely to do any racing this year as a result of border restrictions. One thing both drivers have got in common though is they are keen for 2021 to come around - albeit for different reasons. During two separate catch ups with Greg Rust on Motorsport Australia’s channels, both drivers revealed their plans in 2021 and the key thing they will be looking forward to. For Robinson, he admitted he might not have taken every crucial step necessary to win a Championship in previous years and was convinced 2021 would be a new dawn. “The team had a really good long talk about what it's going to take to actually finish races because of some of the heartbreak in recent years,” Robinson said.

As for Burrows, the COVID-19 lockdown months gave he and son Matthew the chance to accelerate their plans to move the reigning AORC codriver champion to the driver’s seat. The move means Burrows will undoubtedly extend his career in the sport, and give the team a chance to have a two-pronged attack in the near future. “Matthew navigated for me last year and now he has been doing a lot of driving and testing on our farm here in Victoria and the current car is looking good,” Burrows told Rust. “We have also been thinking about building a new car for a while and COVID-19 has given us the chance to have a really hard think about it and organise some parts, so we hope to have a new car to running by mid to late 2021. “I am going to keep driving for a few years and I will have my youngest boy Tom navigating for me. Then when he is at the age to move into the drivers’ seat, I will step away into the pits and look after them from there.”

“One example is from a recent St George event, where we had motor issues but didn’t fix them because I couldn’t be bothered but in hindsight we definitely should have. “This is our big focus now. We want to make sure that every day matters and every point matters because who knows what will happen at the end of the year. “We have lacked in this area in the past of just trying to finish. We need to focus a little bit more time on just getting every point that matters. A little bit more of the data side of needs a bit more love.”

OPENING ROUNDS OF 2021 ARC LOCKED IN The first three rounds of the 2021 RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship (ARC) have been revealed with Motorsport Australian eager to provide competitors with as much notice as possible to prepare for next year. The season will begin in March with Canberra’s Netier National Capital Rally, before competitors head west one and half months later for the Make Smoking History Forest Rally In Western Australia. The third confirmed round will take place in Australia’s southernmost state, with Rally Tasmania taking place on 26-27 June. A pre-season test and official 2021 launch day will also be held in Ballarat on 16 February, open to any interested ARC competitors. Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport and Commercial Operations Michael Smith said the early calendar announcement was being made to allow competitors and crews plenty of planning time, as well as providing the various state championships an opportunity to confirm their calendars in line with the ARC. “We wanted to announce our 2021 calendar as soon as possible and we’ve worked closely with our respective event organisers to make this possible and they have been terrific,” Smith said.

“This early announcement will allow all competitors plenty of time to prepare their cars and lock away their rallying plans” - Michael Smith, Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport and Commercial Operations

“This early announcement will allow all competitors plenty of time to prepare their cars and lock away their rallying plans for the first half of 2021.” The ongoing COVID-19 requirements and any border restrictions will be monitored over the coming months, but it is hoped restrictions will begin to ease with the opening of internal borders earmarked for late 2020.

“We know the COVID-19 pandemic won’t disappear overnight, and we will continue to constantly monitor the border situation and any local restrictions to make sure our events can run safely and welcome as many competitors as possible,” Smith added. “2020 has been a difficult one for everyone, but it is worth acknowledging that both RSEA Safety & Hire and Hoosier Tires have been terrific in their support of our efforts to deliver events both in 2020 and into the future.” The remaining three rounds of the ARC will be confirmed soon.

FIA TESTING MARKS SAFETY REVOLUTION FOR OFF ROAD After a significant amount of research and testing, the FIA has reached a major development in improving the safety of Cross Country rally for its competitors, which can also be applied to off road racing. As a result of a number of spinal injury cases experienced by competitors within the discipline, the FIA Safety Department identified a host of significant injury factors through an extensive research period, which involved complex computer simulations. The simulations utilised a virtual cockpit and the Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS) and saw FIA research engineers recreate hundreds of crash cases as a way to delve into how the position and restraint of competitors affects the spine during impact. Using real-world cases to authenticate the process, the knowledge gained during these tests can now be implemented to assist competitors in preventing substantial spinal injuries in the future. FIA Safety Director Adam Baker believed the advanced simulations and the Total Human Model for Safety ware crucial in making cross country rallies safer for all those involved. "Simulation using the THUMS model has enabled us to study a wide

range of Cross Country accident cases in fine detail, improving our understanding of the key factors that contribute to spinal fractures in Cross Country competition,” Baker said. “We would like all competitors and teams to benefit from the results of this research, as even minor changes in the cockpit can prevent injury.” Some of the highlights to come out of the FIA’s research were if the competitors’ seats are rotated to a more upright position, it reduces the forces translated into a spine fracture. The safety harness was also deemed key in reduced the load on the spine and mitigating injury during a heavy landing or impact, especially

if the angle of the lap strap between anchorage point behind the seat and the buckle is changed. The testing further emphasised the importance of competitors having to always make sure their safety harness is properly tightened during the entire event.

CANBERRA HOSTS ONE OFF RALLY CUP The RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Cup will be up for grabs at November’s Netier National Capital Rally, with a one event ‘shootout’ to determine the Cup winner. Meanwhile, the Hoosier Challenge will be held at eligible state rally events around the country, with competitors to run on Hoosier tyres for their chance to win free entry into a 2021 round of the Championship. Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said 2020 had been a year like no other. “Throughout this year, we’ve made a number of changes to our calendars to try and run events and Championships wherever possible,” Arocca said. “Given the border closures in various states, along with the quarantine requirements should competitors have wanted to compete, unfortunately it was just not feasible to hold this year’s RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship, even in a shortened two event format. “From a sporting point of view, it would be unfair to award a Championship, if

OFF ROAD CUPS ON OFFER IN WEST AND SOUTH The new look Motorsport Australia Off Road Cup will be awarded at two events in October, with the Black Diamond Drilling Kalgoorlie Desert Race to award the Motorsport Australia West Australian Off Road Cup and the Can-Am Loveday 400 to run as the Motorsport Australia Central East Off Road Cup. Both the Can-Am Loveday 400 and the Black Diamond Drilling Kalgoorlie Desert will run as standalone events on 23-25 October with the winner of each Cup to receive free entry into their nearest AORC event in 2021, excluding the Tatts Finke Desert Race. Motorsport Australia Director of Motorsport and Commercial Operations Michael Smith was confident the new Motorsport Australia Off Road Cups would help fill the void for those itching to compete in national level events.

“Unfortunately, the current circumstances do not allow us to host a fair and suitable Championship battle open to all competitors,” Smith said. “With that said, we’re thrilled to be able to come up with a solution for 2020 and we think this is a great opportunity for competitors who are eligible to compete in these two new Cups. “A big thank you must go out to all those who have been working tirelessly to get the events off the ground, especially organisers from both Kalgoorlie and Loveday, and we look forward to each event getting underway.”

SANDOWN TO HOST DECEMBER CHAMPIONSHIPS Victorians will be able to enjoy back-to-back weekends of top level motorsport, with two special Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships events at Sandown in December.

“Victoria has certainly been the hardest hit state when it comes to the available opportunities to compete in 2020, so we are pleased Sandown will be able to host two weekends of action for Victorians to get their motorsport fix.

Motorsport Australia is now welcoming interest from all categories to take part in either weekend, with track time available on 5-6 December and 12-13 December.

“I’d also like to thank Shannons Insurance, who have been a terrific major partner over many years and we are exceptionally grateful for support of Shannons throughout this year, along with our other sponsors – Morris Finance, Michelin and Burson Auto Parts.”

All categories are eligible, with national and state level motorsport categories to compete at the events. “We understand that a lot of categories won’t be able to host their Championship or Series this year, but these two weekends will allow competitors an opportunity to get out on track and dust off the cobwebs, as well as prepare for a busy 2021 campaign,” Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships Director Michael Smith said. “The Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships regularly welcome a wide range of categories and this event will follow that well known format, with a Victorian flavour.

28

Smith said Motorsport Australia was monitoring the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in Melbourne as it prepared for these December events.` “Under the State Government’s proposed Road Map, we expect by December these events will be able to go ahead, in line with our government endorsed Return To Race strategy,” Smith added. “It’s too early to say if spectators will be able to attend, but we are hopeful a limited number will be allowed to Sandown to watch, and we will advise of any spectator opportunities as soon as we are able.

MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

“Sandown, being so close to central Melbourne, is a great venue for motorsport and will mean many competitors can stay in their own home and not have to travel significant distances to be part of the event as well. “Should the Victorian borders open by this time, we would of course welcome competitors from other states, in line with any restrictions.” Further details of the event and the categories involved will be announced in the coming weeks. The back-to-back Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships events will be held at Sandown International Raceway on 5-6 December and 12-13 December.

Q&A Based in northern New South Wales, the New England Sporting Car Club has spent more than half a century providing its loyal members with a range of grassroots motorsport.

Speed Read caught up with President Matt Carey to discuss the club.

Speed Read: Tell us about the club’s history.

Matt Carey: The New England Sporting Car Club was formed in October 1966 and the first official meeting was held in the workshop of the Jubilee service station in Armidale with around 34 people in attendance. During the early years, club events consisted mainly of motorkhanas, quarter-mile sprints, economy runs and navigation exercises using 1:250000 Survey maps. Several members also competed in drag racing at Surfers Paradise raceway. In the mid 1970’s the club’s focus shifted to rallying, where up to 10 crews competed in Northern

New England Sporting Car Club NSW events from Newcastle all the way to the Queensland border. The club also organised numerous rallies in the New England area. SR: Where is the club at now with member base number and what is the range of members? MC: We have been pretty consistent with our membership numbers for the past five years. We usually hover around the 35 to 40 mark and we are quite diverse with our members ranging between 12 and 78-years-old. SR: Is the club still focused on rally? MC: We are still involved with rally, but the club’s main focus now is on enjoying the various forms of

motorsport while encouraging junior participation. So while our members are still involved in rallying, we are involved in lap dashes, hill climbs, rallysprints, khanacrosses and motorkhanas. SR: What has been a major highlight for the club over the past 12 months? MC: It’s been a tough year for our club as a result of last year’s bushfires that affected a lot of New South areas and the COVID-19 restrictions that been in place this year. So we don’t necessarily have any major highlights this year, but hopefully the next 12 months will be better for us. SR: What is the club's biggest event every year and tell us about it? MC: Our biggest event is the Echidna Gully Rallysprint which we run bi-annually and for our past events, we have managed to attract competitors from Sydney, all the way up to southern Queensland.

Run over six kilometres of shire roads and used three times in each direction, the event has proved very popular with both competitors and spectators In recent years. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled this year because COVID-19 restrictions. SR: What makes the club unique? MC: Other than access to a 20,000 square metre concrete skid pan, where we conduct our motorkhanas and khanacrosses, we are probably no different to any other small club. SR: What does it mean for the club to be affiliated with Motorsport Australia? MC: The club has been affiliated with Motorsport Australia since it was formed in 1966 and received a “Milestone Recognition” award in 2016. SR: Are there any particular standout stories for club individuals and what they are?

MC: The most successful members of our Club would be Paul Kennedy and Ken Behrend who formed PKB Rallysport in 1984. They won the 1986 NSW Clubman Series and the Group 6 rally Series in a LB Lancer. They then went on to win the 1991 New South Wales Rally Championship in the ex-Wayne Bell Toyota Sprinter and then again in 1995 in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO. In 1998 they contested the RSEA Safety Motorsport Australia Rally Championship, finishing fifth outright and second in Group N. Both are still active members of NESCC.

SUPER SCOTT 32 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SPEED READ

The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship has a new three-time Champion, with Scott McLaughlin sealing the back-to-back-to-back crown at The Bend Motorsport Park. The double round at The Bend proved to be quite the spectacle, as both the Repco Supersprint and the OTR Supersprint offered fans a variety of entertainment.

McLaughlin became just the fourth driver in Championship history to win three on the trot, and with a 300 plus point gap to his nearest title rival in Jamie Whincup, the title is effectively his. Only a rare points penalty at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 would see the Championship end up outside of his reach. McLaughlin wasn’t the only champion to come out of the two rounds, with Ford sealing the manufactures title courtesy of Cameron Waters, Fabian Coulthard and Scott McLaughlin’s respective wins in both rounds. Another highlight of the two rounds saw Waters secure his first career solo win in Supercars after a strong outing in week two’s final race – the same race that saw McLaughlin secure his unassailable lead in the Championship.

ZOOM – TO RECORD, OR NOT RECORD YOUR MEETING? With many of us making the most of video conferencing technology such as Zoom, it’s important everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities. The ability to meet easily and on short notice without the need to leave your home has made Zoom meetings more popular during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the relative ease of jumping on a call at a moment’s notice, there are still some privacy issues to be aware of. Zoom and other video conferencing platforms allow users to record their meetings, however before you hit record on your next meeting you should be aware that video meetings are still subject to Australian privacy laws. The University of Adelaide has put together some handy background about recording these meetings: “In the digital context, meetings are still subject to the laws that protect individual privacy.

“Surveillance and privacy laws place an onus on anyone who wants to record a meeting to seek the informed consent of the participants. This means that you will need to give your invitees some details about why you want to record the meeting and ask that they consent to the record being used for that purpose. “Once you have the informed consent of the participants you can commence recording. To document that you have agreement, you might for example, begin the recorded part of the meeting by confirming what the recording will be used for and that the participants have given their consent. “If you are a participant in a Zoom meeting and notice that it is being recorded (check the top left‑hand corner of the screen), you are entitled to ask about the purpose of the recording. The business purpose should be clear and relevant. You are entitled to leave the meeting if you don’t think that is the case. “This same general obligation applies to face to face meetings. In most circumstances, you can’t use your

smart phone to legally record a meeting conversation unless you have everyone’s consent. In either case, significant penalties apply – up to $75k for an organisation or $15k or three years’ imprisonment for an individual.” Motorsport Australia would like to remind its clubs and other bodies to be aware of these privacy issues when making use of these platforms, with traditional minute taking advised instead of make use of digital recordings.

Oscar Piastri

Young Australian Oscar Piastri has won the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship. After a whirlwind two months in the Formula 1 feeder category, Piastri took out the crown during September’s thrilling finale in Italy. With very little separating the Victorian, Prema teammate Logan Sargeant and Frenchman Theo Pourchaire, the championship fight continued until the Championship’s very final lap. It was a mighty effort from the 2019 Formula Renault Eurocup winner, with Piastri eventually winning the Championship by three points and becoming the first Australian to win at this level. “I think the last few weeks have put me through a test emotionally...

I still can't believe we won this," Piastri said post-finale. "I have been consistent over the year. We bounced back from all setbacks we've had. (We) had quite a few technical issues and other problems to deal with but keeping my head cool and my consistency has been the biggest thing.” Piastri wasn’t the only Australian competing in the Championship with Alex Peroni, Calan Williams and Jack Doohan joining him in the Championship. While Williams and Doohan were unable to register any points in their rookie seasons, Peroni had much better year than his own rookie season last year, finishing in the top 10 and picking up some podiums along the way.
