REWARD FOR STAR VIDAU

“Winning the award has helped me build confidence... It's something you want to win” Photo: Speed Shots Photography

6 CAMS SPEED READ

Photos: Speed Shots Photography

The name Max Vidau may not be familiar to many around the country, but the young South Australian has certainly been creating a reputation around him. A regular podium placer in the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge Australia, Vidau has been showing positive signs of development throughout the past few years. Earlier this year, Vidau was named as the 2018 South Australian Burson Future Star Award recipient after his rise in the sport was rewarded with a top three outright placing in last year’s one-make series. Vidau’s season started off on a high with a round win at The Bend Motorsport Park, but he was unable to pick up any more race wins throughout the year, eventually falling to third. Despite being the chosen for the award based on last year’s performance, Vidau believes the award was reward for the season and the two before. “It was pretty cool to be named as the Burson Future Star winner,” Vidau said. “Honestly it’s a pretty big deal to win it and it was awesome to have my family and friends there at the state awards to celebrate with me, especially since they have sacrificed a lot to keep me on track.

“Last year wasn’t my best year to be honest. We went into every race knowing we were fast but we didn’t really get the result we were looking for, but you get those years. “As for the award, I felt it was the past few years contributed to me receiving it, obviously being with Team Sonic has also helped me.” Starting out his motor sport career in go karts, Vidau then moved into the Hyundai Excels when he was 14, completing a few rounds at Mallala before progressing to Formula Ford with Team Sonic. It was here where Max had his breakout years, claiming two titles within two years, giving the South Australian the confidence to grow and move into the GT3 Cup Challenge.

“I just need to work out what we can do next year and what we can afford, but we will definitely be on track. “Winning the award has helped me build confidence and it is something you want to win. “For me, it’s another box to tick on your resume as you look to move up the chain. It’s a really good thing to have on your resume. “Hopefully in five years I will be in Europe, but I don’t really mind where I am, as long as I am racing because that is what makes make me happy.”

Click here to learn more about the CAMS awards.

As for what he plans to do in an undecided future, Vidau just hopes to continue racing, no matter where it is. “This will be my last year of the Cup Challenge,” Vidau added. CAMS.COM.AU 7

POSITIVITY KEY TO WILCOX’S ACCOLADE

8 CAMS SPEED READ

In the world of Queensland motor sport, Athol Wilcox is regarded as one of the most popular officials around and his 2018 Castrol Queensland Official of the Year award justified his reputation. Despite having less experience than a number of officials volunteering in the sport, in the 15 years Wilcox has been involved, he has been quite an influence and a sought after official. Starting out as an off road competitor in the 1990s, Wilcox was a co-founder of the Gympie Auto Sports Club where he helped shape the club to becoming a progressive and popular one for off road racing. In 2003, Wilcox raced his last off road event, but his involvement in motor sport only grew stronger, with the Queenslander opting to jump on the other side of the fence and give back to the sport that had given so much to him.

Photo: Queensland Scrutineering Association Facebook

Photos: Queensland Scrutineering Association Facebook

“When I finished racing in 2003, I really wanted to put something back into the sport and that is when I became an official. I was doing some stuff before that, but it became really full-time after,” Wilcox said. Now, after 15 years in the sport and working in roles from scrutineering to Clerk of Course, Wilcox has thrived as an official, getting involved no matter where or what role. “You get to see the other side of the sport.

“It doesn’t matter what level it is or in what capacity, I just want to help the sport continue”

“You see the officials doing their thing when you’re a competitor and don't think much of it, but now I have seen the other side since I have been an official which has been great.

“To be named as the best official in Queensland and above everybody else that does officiating in the state was unbelievable, it was a proud moment for me.

“It doesn’t matter what level it is or in what capacity, I just want to help the sport continue. I do everything from Supercars to club khanacrosses from the role of Clerk of Course to Scrutineering.”

“It was great evening. It was nice to see Eugene Arocca in person up there. To have the head of CAMS, as well as a lot of people who mentored me through the years, all there to see me pick up the award was just mind-blowing.”

While the 60-year-old has achieved so much in the sport as an official, he was still surprised to be nominated and crowned with one of the most prestigious awards in the state.

With an attitude like the one of Wilcox, it’s not hard to see why he has become such a revered figure in the Queensland motor sport community.

“Winning the [2018 Castrol Queensland Official of the Year] was one of the biggest shocks I've ever had in my life,” Wilcox added. “To realise that my peers have got a lot of confidence and respect in what I do is just unbelievable.

PM VISITS VIETNAM Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has had his first look at the Formula 1 Vietnam Grand Prix circuit recently.

As previously announced, key CAMS officials and staff will play a lead role in ensuring a successful delivery of the first ever Grand Prix in Vietnam in 2020. Morrison was joined by Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister, Vu Duc Dam, along with leaders from local government and senior management of the Vietnam Grand Prix Corporation (VGPC). The milestone moment highlighted the continuing work of all parties involved in the preparation for the significant motor sport event. CAMS is working closely with the Vietnamese Motorsports Association and VGPC to ensure the event is ready to go once the drivers, teams and cars arrive in Vietnam in 2020. Set to become the sixth street race on the F1 calendar next year, a lap of the track will be 5607m in length and feature 23 corners, some of them borrowing heavily from iconic tracks like Suzuka and the Nürburgring. 12 CAMS SPEED READ

Designed by Tilke Engineers & Architects in partnership with Formula 1, the circuit also features one of the longest straights in the sport (1.6km) where drivers could reach speeds of up to 335km/h. Work is well underway on the circuit, as well as in the training rooms where CAMS staff continue to train up officials to help deliver this historic event. The pit building is nearing completion, while work on the temporary grandstands is well underway. Tickets are now on sale for the event, with motor sport fans encouraged to attend the event to witness history and see Formula 1’s newest facility for themselves.

SHANNONS HEAT UP SIZZLING IPSWICH

16 CAMS SPEED READ

It was the biggest round for 2019 as the Shannons Nationals avoided the winter blues to head north to Queensland Raceway for the fourth round of the year. As the sun heated up the track, so did the action with seven categories all competing for official points, the most notable being the popular Australian Production Car Series (APCS) with their annual Fight in the Night. As the APCS’s premiere event for the year, the night race saw spruced cars and neon lights illuminate the track with defending champions Beric Lynton and Tim Leahey taking victory. The duo also managed to come away with the elusive Sunday victory. There were significant victories all round, from the reigning Australian Prototype Series winner Jason Makris earning his first round win for the year, to National Sports Sedan Series legend Tony

Ricciardello bouncing back into the winners’ circle after a frustrating previous round. The carsales TCR Australia Series season was at boiling point as series leader Will Brown had a weekend to forget, allowing round winner Dylan O’Keefe to close the gap on him after a perfect performance. Another brilliant showing came from Harri Jones, who extends his lead in the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge after picking up two wins and a runner-up. It was also a successful weekend for the two state series appearing at the Shannons Nationals, with Cameron Wilson just pipping 2016 champion Cameron Bartholomew in the Series X3 Queensland, while in the Improved Production Racing Association Queensland, Zac Hudson’s constancy saw him finish with two races and round honours.

PICTURE PERFECT WINTON

20 CAMS SPEED READ

Photo: Street to Screen Media

It was a weekend of sun at Winton, with three categories putting on a show at the picture perfect regional Victorian circuit.

CARSALES TCR AUSTRALIA SERIES It was the Will Brown show on Sunday, with the Hyundai driver winning both race two and race to further cement his place at the top of the Series standings. Brown was quick all weekend, securing his first ever Astrontech Pole Position with a blistering lap early in qualifying, while Andre Heimgartner edged out John Martin by just 0.0008 of a second to seal second. It was hard to look past Brown who was flawless at Winton – no other driver was able to keep with the young gun from Toowoomba – a 10 second margin in race three to the next best highlighted his dominance. Jason Bright took out Saturday's race one, but was unable to catch the Hyundai driver on Sunday, placing second place in race two and a mistake on the start line in race three saw him stranded on the line. Aaron Cameron and his Volkswagen GTi were also impressive with two podiums on Sunday – a second and third place putting him in the frame for title contention.

AUSTRALIAN PROTOTYPE SERIES Realty Lane’s Daniel Gonzalez has captured his first ever round win, despite a drive through penalty in the final race. Gonzalez had a strong and consistent weekend, narrowly edging out the OTRbacked Paul Trengove who finished the round in second. Gonzalez also claimed the win in Sunday’s opening race. Trengove was rewarded with the Hankook Class win in just his second round competing in the Series, helped significantly by his race one win on Saturday. Phil Hughes was impressive across all four races to claim the Radical Class win. Three races made up the Series’ Sunday, with two races for Series points and another to pay tribute to Father’s Day and the competitor’s families who sacrifice plenty to help the drivers go racing. John-Paul Drake was the winner of the nonpoints race, claiming some much-needed Endota spa vouchers, while he backed up that form to win the final race of the day. Drake’s strong weekend saw him end the event in third overall.

PORSCHE 944 CHALLENGE It was Cameron Beller’s weekend at Winton in the Porsches. Qualifying on pole, Beller proceeded to win every race over the two racing days, making it a clean sweep of the Porsche 944 Challenge for the Victorian. Adam Brewer finished second overall for the round, while Michael Westaway came third. The category also competed in a fourth, handicapped race that was not for points. Beller was again one of the standouts– finishing fifth, despite starting at the rear of the grid. Pedr James the official final race winner for the Porsche 944 Challenge.

NEXT UP, SANDOWN Round 6 of the Shannons Nationals is less than a month away, with the iconic Sandown Raceway hosting a jam-packed weekend of racing in suburban Melbourne. The debut of the S5000 Series, along with the popular carsales TCR Australia Series, CAMS Australian GT Championship, MRF Tyres Australian Production Cars and the final round of the Kumho Tyre Super3 Series are all on the card.

BATES’ FOUR-PEAT ON DRAMA FILLED DAY

Photo: Wishart Media

Harry Bates and John McCarthy have continued their winning ways, steering their Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia entry to another CAMS Australian Rally Championship win at an incident-filled Pedders Eureka Rush. Bates’ victory in Victoria’s goldfields was his fourth win of 2019 from four ARC events – the Toyota Yaris AP4 proving it is clearly the car to beat this season. “Really tough conditions here at the Eureka Rush but very very happy with our day and completely stoked to have taken most stage wins and to be here on top of the podium.” Bates said. A number of top runners fell victim to the tight and technical forest stages, including Subaru’s Molly Taylor and AGI Sport’s Luke Anear. Second on the ARC podium was Les Walkden Rallying’s Simon Evans and Bernie Webb – an impressive showing in just their second rally of 2019.

“Really tough conditions here at the Eureka Rush but very very happy with our day” - Harry Bates “The stages are just incredibly challenging. You just have to be really smart and I called on my experience a lot to get through and we actually recorded reasonable times.” Evans said. Toyota teammates Lewis Bates and Anthony McLoughlin were also strong in Victoria, finishing third – even claiming a stage win on the sixth stage of the event. “To have two Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia cars on the podium is a credit to the team on what was a challenging day. We’re really happy with our result.” Lewis said.

CAMS.COM.AU 27

Subaru do Motorsport’s Taylor and Malcolm Read were pushing their Toyota counterparts in the opening stages posting some impressive times, however heavy contact with a tree on Special Stage 4 (Water Race) saw their Subaru stranded, partially blocking the stage for the runners behind. While it looked unlikely the Subaru would return to action after the front-on impact, the Orange Motorsport Engineering team went to work in the service park and the factory-backed Subaru was able to return, running last on the road, but claiming some very valuable Championship points. AGI Sport’s Anear and co-driver Andy Sarandis ended their rally on the same stage, a rollover meaning their damaged Ford Fiesta R5 was unable to re-join in the afternoon. Pedders Eureka Rush also doubled as a round of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship’s Asia Pacific Cup, and it was an up-and-down day for BE Energy’s Hayden Paddon and Samantha Gray. The duo also came-a-cropper on the first run of Water Race, ending their opening heat. However, they were able to claim a number of stage wins before their off. The duo were able to get back to the service park and re-join for the afternoon, and went on to show their class claiming further stage wins ahead of the Bates brothers who were entered into both the ARC and APRC competitions. Paddon’s return to the field and quick afternoon times allowed him and Gray to round out the APRC podium in third.

WILLIAMS AND BELL SURVIVE TOUGH CARDWELL RALLY The month of August saw a number of club, state and national championship events come down to a survival of the fittest and the Cardwell Forest Rally was exactly that.

Despite the fourth placed finishers limping across the finish line, the same couldn’t be said for a number of the top end crews who suffered early exits from the event despite putting in solid results.

With 12 crews registered to the start the Townsville City Autosport Club’s rally, less than half of the field were able to complete all nine stages, as Lee Williams and Tom Bell came away with the well-deserved victory.

Australian privateer champions Simon and Eylisa Jansen were the first big name to drop off as the number three seeds managed to complete just 11km after their engine failed on the first stage.

Finishing more than two and half minutes behind the winning duo were David and Peter Kayess, while Rob Wilkins and Anthony Manago rounded out the top three after their time totalled to 20 minutes behind the runners-up.

Second seeds Anthony and Chloe Tanzer were the next out after retiring on the third stage, however the number one seeded car in Steven van der Brug and Linda Rankine were the biggest team to suffer a premature exit from the event.

The Holden VS pilots finished two minutes ahead of Brett and Jenna Wasley, after the father-daughter crew heartbreakingly blew a hose off the inter-cooler on their Skyline in the final stage, effectively costing them the position.

Behind the wheel of the Subaru Impreza, the duo were on track for an unchallenged victory after the earlier exits of their rivals, but it wasn’t to be as the car’s timing belt broke on a liaison stage – forcing them out.

The only other team to finish the rally were Ian Gough and Lachlan van Dinter, the duo steering their Toyota Celica to fifth outright and just under two minutes slower than the Wasleys.

Club Development Fund

MG CAR CLUB INVESTING IN THEIR FUTURE

As one of the latest recipients of the CAMS Development Fund, the MG Car Club of Victoria has held a successful youth challenge at the iconic Rob Roy Hillclimb, to build the driver skills of young Australians. Taking part in the challenge, 16 junior drivers and two parents across three classes took on the triple event with the drivers each tackling a motorkhana, khanacross and Observed Section Trial, with their best times from each round going towards their final score. With all participants showing signs of improvement throughout the day, it was the Mini Car Club’s Evelyn Apted (joint 15 y.o class winner) and Paige Hunter (winner of the Under 15 y.o class) of the MG Car Club who came away with outright victory based upon the points accrued over the three-event format. Following the event, club spokesman Adrian Hunter was thrilled with the opportunity to hold the event after receiving the grant from CAMS.

“By encouraging young drivers to enjoy motor sport, it's the whole community that benefits” - Adrian Hunter, MG Car Club of Victoria

Photos: MG Car Club of Victoria

“Without the support from CAMS and the Club Development Fund, it is unlikely that the event would be able to be run,” Hunter said. “As a result of receiving the funding, the club was able to run the event and promote the activities of young drivers amongst many car clubs, with drivers coming from six neighbouring clubs, including our own. “By running the event, it was also an opportunity for our own junior members to compete in a day dedicated to them and show their parents how much they have improved behind the wheel. “At many events the number of junior drivers is very small, so it was pleasing that a field of 16 young drivers attended and all improving as the day went on, in what was at times challenging conditions.”

As a recipient of the CAMS Club Development Fund, Hunter believed it is a form of financial aid and support that all clubs should consider applying for. “We would definitely recommend the Club Development Fund,” Hunter added. “While a club can often provide the volunteers needed to run an event, there are costs associated with every event that the entry fee from a small field of drivers is unable to meet. “Accordingly, the CDF provides the incentive for the wider members of the club to support the running of the event and removes the ‘charity’ feel that is sometimes associated with ‘loss leaders’. “By encouraging young drivers to enjoy motor sport, it is the whole motor sport community that benefits.”

Peter Major has won his sixth Make Smoking History Targa West title in dramatic fashion, taking out an impressive victory. Driving alongside Kim Screaigh in the 2004 Porsche 996 Turbo, that has won four consecutive Targa Wests itself, the duo were under extreme pressure from Peter Rullo and Jimmy Marquet for the whole event.

38 CAMS SPEED READ

On the final day of action, they managed to extend on their lead over the Lotus Exige Sport 410 and secure the milestone victory, while Will White and Matt Thompson steered their 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 to third place. “It’s really special to be listed among such esteemed drivers who have won Targa West, and to win six, it just feels surreal,” Major said.

“I was 25 when I won my first rally and things are bit different these days with two little kids – I’m trying to steer them towards tennis or cricket so I have some money in the bank when I retire. “Full credit to Peter Rullo, he pushed me harder than I’ve ever been pushed. I’d also like to thank the organisers and volunteers for another great rally.”

PRICE POWERS TO VICTORY “Rocked up here a bit cold turkey, hoping for the best and we’ve come away with the best result. So it’s been a really good day” - Toby Price

2019 Dakar Rally winner Toby Price has powered his way to victory at the third round of the 2019 DEWALT CAMS Australian SXS Championship in Ballarat in perfect conditions. Wet conditions were forecast on Saturday, but the rain held off, leading to a spectacular day of racing in what was one of the tightest rounds of the season. Price, who drove his Can-Am Offroad SXS vehicle to the win, said he was well prepared coming into the event having had practice runs at Finke back in June. “I took my Can-Am out to Finke this year and did a lot of pre-running in it so I had a lot of wheel time on it there. Around a motocross track I haven’t done anything with it in a while.” Price said. It took a few heats for Price to get settled in, keeping the pace with the rest of the field for most of the morning before stepping it up a gear in the final heats to qualify fastest for the semi finals.

From there it was all strategy as Price paced himself for most of the semi final before using his ‘Joker Lane’ on the second last lap to jump to the front of the pack and take the race win. A great grid position meant Price was able to get a quick start in the Grand Final as carnage behind him ensued with four-time CAMS Australian Rally Champion Simon Evans locking up his breaks and colliding with a competitor putting him out of contention. From there, Price was rarely troubled, finishing first comfortably to take his very first win in Ballarat. “Rocked up here a bit cold turkey for it hoping for the best here in Ballarat and we’ve come away with the best result and got a win for it. So it’s been a really good day.” Price said.

Following behind was Ewan McClue who despite missing the first round, has now put together two solid performances, winning Canberra outright and now finishing second in Ballarat. “This round was tough; everyone was really fast. Obviously, we had guys like Toby Price, James Shipp and Simon Evans and they were all quite quick. It was a pretty tough round so I’m very happy with second.” McClue said. Tim Liston won the SXS Sport class for the third event in a row ahead of Robert Gussenhoven, steering his buggy to a class victory in difficult dusty conditions.

was a lot of two-wheel action which made the track completely different to what it has been.” Liston said. Liston now sits second overall and will carry plenty of confidence heading into the fourth and final round. ‘It’s worked out really well for us. This is our third-year racing and hopefully third time’s a charm and we take out the season win.” Liston said. The DEWALT CAMS Australian SXS Championship now moves to the north-west of Victoria in Caveat for the final round of the season on 26 October.

“Today was pretty tough. Our car is great in the wet and the track was very dry and had a lot of grip. There

ONE SECOND DASH FOR TRI CHALLENGE Robert Turner has won the Markwell Demolition Gold City Tri Challenge by the closest of margins as just one second separated his Pro-Buggy and Chris Sollitt's Superlite in a thrilling contest. As nine crews did battle over 10 laps, completing 87 competitive kilometres in the process, it was Turner and Sollitt who put on a magnificent show for fans, going blow for blow, as both drivers took out the fastest time on multiple laps. In the final lap, Sollitt worked furiously to close a 30 second gap to less than a second.

Unfortunately for Superlite pilot it wasn’t enough as Turner took out the well-deserved win. Rounding out the top three was David Skinner, who posted the fastest time on two laps, including the important final lap where he finished two seconds ahead of Sollitt and the fourth placed Mark Bredden. The Tri-Challenge was broken down into three lap sections, the nine competing crews were tasked with taking on three 14km laps, four 9km laps and three 3km laps.

KALGOORLIE ON THE CARDS

44 CAMS SPEED READ

The BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship has confirmed the annual Kalgoorlie Desert Race has been named a candidate event for the 2020 Championship and beyond. CAMS Director of Motor Sport and Commercial Operations Michael Smith said the popular event was firming as a potential fourth round of the AORC, with discussions ongoing with event organisers and the local government. “Kalgoorlie Desert Race has proven itself as a popular and exciting off road event that is one of the highlights of the Western Australia motor sport calendar,” Smith said. “We’re really excited to be working with the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder who are amazing supporters of the event in its current form, and also really passionate about growing the race into a national level event. They have a rich history of hosting motor sport events and would certainly be capable of welcoming the AORC to the west. “The extension of the BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship is always something we are looking into and this event in Kalgoorlie is certainly a very strong candidate to be part of the AORC line up.” Mayor John Bowler said the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder would be thrilled to host a national level motor sport event on its doorstep. “Our region is a thriving and passionate community which sees the terrific benefits that flow from hosting a motor sport event like the Kalgoorlie Desert Race,” Cr Bowler said. “The race is iconic and well known amongst Western Australians and we’re extremely keen to see this event take on a national standing and welcome even more competitors, crew and spectators to our wonderful City. “The history of motor sport in Kalgoorlie-Boulder runs deep and has been well documented. We’re excited to be looking to add yet another chapter to our motor sport history. “The economic benefits of hosting a round of the Australian Off Road Championship to the City are worth noting, with a large number of people expected to stay and experience this terrific part of Australia.” This year’s Kalgoorlie Desert Race will be held on 27 and 28 October, with CAMS and the AORC representatives expected to attend the event to gain a better understanding of how it will fit into the national calendar. A final decision on the event’s standing in 2020 is expected to be made in the coming months.

BURROWS CROWNED CHAMPION AGAIN

In what were extremely difficult conditions after a rain plagued lead up and the cancellation of the first day of action, the reduced event became extremely difficult just to finish as only 11 crews were able to go the distance. For the second time in three years, Greg Gartner took the top step in the AORC season finale, while Dale Martin and Lee Wells finished in second, despite crossing the line first, after having their compulsory pit stop times added to their total time. With nine-time AORC champions Shannon and Ian Rentsch leaving the buggy in the trailer and Stephen Graham a late withdrawal, the battle for the championship opened up as Burrows and son Matt went into Sunday's action just needing to finish to win the title. Their task became a whole lot easier when a number of big fish fell on the first lap as the duo cruised to third to claim Mark’s eighth, 18 years after his last, and Matt’s maiden title.

With 22 races down, Scott McLaughlin is sitting pretty on top of the Supercars leaderboard and a second championship trophy looming almost within his grasp. The Virgin Australia Supercars Championship is entering the tail end of the season with only five events remaining on the 2019 calendar. McLaughlin's super performance at the recent OTR SuperSprint widened the gap between his nearest competitor, Chaz Mostert, to 573 points. The Shell V-Power Racing Team driver won both races at The Bend – making it 16 for the year and equalling Craig Lowndes’ 23-year-old record for race wins in an entire season. A record that will most likely be broken in the remain third of this year. The Mustang pilot was understandably elated with his weekend double, particularly considering how the team had struggled at The Bend when the track made its debut on the calendar in 2018. “It’s really awesome. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys for the turnaround we’ve had,” McLaughlin said. “It was one we circled to really come back for and I’m so stoked. It was super-racing, I didn’t get the best start, but good racing towards the end.” It was an all Ford Mustang podium on Sunday, with Milwaukee Racing’s Will Davison in second and Tickford Racing’s Chaz Mostert in third.

Davison, who had led the race for a period, was also thrilled to be on the podium, despite mechanical gremlins ultimately costing him a win. “I’m absolutely stoked with this result because it was such an intense race; really, really enjoyable," Davison said. On Saturday’s opening race of the round, Anton de Pasquale was the best performing Holden driver, finishing on the podium in third, behind Mostert in second and McLaughlin, who won Saturday’s race by just over seven seconds. The Bend’s results have seen some slight movement in the minor places in the standings, with Mostert leaping into second overall, while Fabian Coulthard drops from second to third. The next round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship takes place in New Zealand as teams go into battle at the ITM Auckland SuperSprint on 13-15 September.

RECORDS TUMBLE AT LEYBURN Dean Amos has become the first driver to break through the sub-40 second barrier at the Historic Leyburn Sprints, claiming his sixth-straight Col Furness Memorial Trophy in the process.

Photos: Trapnell Creations

Taking on more than 200 historic, classic and modern competitors in a Gould GR55BJudd V8 – with the engine formerly out of a Formula 1 car – to clock a 39.794 second time on the one kilometre course. Amos of course reckoned there’s more time in it yet. “I definitely think there’s a .38 (sec) there if the conditions are right,” Amos said. “Saturday was good but we had a couple of little problems that prevented us going faster on Sunday. It’s great to win here for the sixth time and we’ll definitely be back to give it another shot in 2020.” Keith Carling, driving a 1984 Tiga sports car, set a fastest time of 50.729sec. in the Historic classes. Ford Escort driver Tom Brelsford, 16, won the Ann Collins Junior Memorial Trophy for competitors aged 14-17 years. The Sprints celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix, which was held on an ex-wartime aerodrome circuit near the Darling Downs township back in 1949. A who’s who of Australian motor sport also gathered as part of the celebrations in front of a strong 15,000 crowd. Bathurst greats such as Dick Johnson, Kevin Bartlett, Colin Bond, Bob Holden, John French and Fred Gibson were on hand as part of the event’s celebrations. An auction of donated goods, raffles for racing car rides and other activities raised a record $9,500 for the community-run Sprints’ 2019 beneficiary, the 49-student Wheatvale State School. “It’s been an amazing weekend, with a record run, perfect warm weather, big crowds, more than 200 fantastic cars, great competition and a wonderful atmosphere,” Sprints President Tricia Chant said. “Competitors and spectators came from as far away as South Australia and Far North Queensland and around 2,000 campers turned a town of around 300 residents into a mini-city for two nights. It was a brilliant weekend.”
