Cruisin’ in the Passin’ Lane_ _ _ _ _ _ By: Jimbo We sure had some great weather in January. I don’t think any of the shows or cruise-in’s got rained out. February is a full month of Mardi-Gras party's and parades, car shows and cruise-in’s. I love the fact that we can drive our cars all year long here on the Gulf Coast. February is a full month of activities and the DQ Chill & Grill in D’Iberville will have a Mardi-Gras Cruise-in on Saturday the 18th from 4pm to 8pm. The DQ is going to have monthly Cruise-in’s and will have some special incentives to go. I would like to give all the DJ’s and staff at the Radio Group a big thank you for joining the Gulf Coast MotorSports readers. We look forward to working with Super Dave, Pat McGowan, Scott B, & Lisa Vee on Coast 102. The Coast Cruizers will hold their monthly meeting on the second Monday, February 13, at the Food Court in Edgewater Mall from 7pm till. It’s a new year and time to make some changes. We have some new volunteers that will share ideas and help make plans for our 2012 activities. The Coast Cruizers is a social club and all our readers are invited to attend. Everyone is welcome and members from other clubs are welcome too. Ok here is some e-mail…. Jimbo, Older Men Scam Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven't heard about it. A 'heads up' for those men who may be regular customers at Lowe's, Home Depot, Costco, or even Wal-Mart. This one caught me totally by surprise. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends. Here's how the scam works; Two nice looking, collegeage girls will come over to your car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They both start wiping your windshield with a... Rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. (It's impossible not to look). When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No' but instead ask for a ride to McDonald's. You agree and they climb into the vehicle. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had my wallet stolen Dec. 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, again on the 17th, 20th, 24th, and the 29th. Also Jan.

SEND IN YOUR POP QUIZ To - jimbo@dixiepress.com 1st, 3rd, 4th, twice on the 7th &8th, and very likely again this upcoming weekend. So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of us older men. Warn your friends to be vigilant. Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found even cheaper ones for $.99 at the Dollar Store and bought them out in three of their stores. Also, you never get to eat at McDonald's. I've already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth from Lowe's, to Home Depot, to Wal-Mart. So please, send this on to all the older men that you know and warn them to be on the lookout for this scam. I can see her house from my living room. I watched as she got home from work this evening. I was surprised when she walked across the street and up my driveway. She knocked on my door... I rushed to open it. She looks at me, and says, "I just got home, and I am so horny! I have this strong urge to have a good time, get drunk, and make love all night long! Are you busy tonight?" I immediately replied, "Nope, I'm free... I have no plans at all!" Then she said, "Good! In that case, could you watch my dog?" MAN... IT'S NO FUN GETTING OLD!!! GptTeeByrd

Jimbo, Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah's Ark. ONE: Don't miss the boat. TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat! THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark. FOUR: Stay fit. When you're 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. FIVE: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. SIX: Build your future on high ground. SEVEN: For safety's sake, travel in pairs. EIGHT: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. NINE: When you're stressed, float awhile. TEN: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. ELEVEN: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting. Tucker2050 Jimbo, Uninsured Cars Off The Road The City of Dallas, Texas, passed an ordinance stating that if a driver is pulled over by law enforcement and is not able to provide proof of insurance, the car is towed. To retrieve the car after being impounded, they must show proof of insurance to have the car released. This has made it easy for the City of Dallas to remove uninsured cars. Shortly after the "No Insurance" ordinance was passed, the Dallas impound lots began to fill up and were full after only nine days. 80 + % of the impounded cars were driven by illegals. Not only must they provide proof of insurance to have their car released, they have to pay for the cost of the tow, a $350 fine, and $20 for every day their car is kept in the lot. Accident rates are going down and... Dallas' solution gets uninsured drivers off the road WITHOUT making them show proof of nationality. Wonder how the ACLU or the Justice Department will get around this one. Just brings tears to my eyes. GO Dallas! Jimmiebell37 Jimmie, The law is real but not that new. The City of Dallas, in the Lone Star State, has been towing and impounding vehicles since January 1, 2009 according to their City Hall Web Site . Ordinance 27189 was passed by the Dallas City Council on May 28, 2008 in "response to the large number of people driving in the City of Dallas without the proper state required auto insurance." After January 1, 2009 the law granted authority to the police officers to tow and impound vehicles that they stop for any alleged violation of city or state law if the owner or operator of the vehicle failed to provide evidence of financial responsibility as required by the Texas Transportation Code.

Jimbo, You must read this...a proper decision by the courts...for a change.... an atheist created a case against Easter and Passover Holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians and Jews and observances of their holy days. The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days. The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, "Case dismissed!" The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, "Your honor, How can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have

Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays..." The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, "But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant." The lawyer said, "Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists.." The judge said, "The calendar says April 1st is April Fools Day. Psalm 14:1 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that, if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned...". You gotta’ love a Judge who knows his scripture!

Jimbo, My name is Kayla Joy and I’m from Lafayette, LA. By chance, I met Mr. Ernest Cox in September of 2011 at our local fitness center. Mr. Ernie shared a photo album of his truck with me. It included pictures of his wife, his sons & himself standing in front of his 1949 Ford pick-up truck. The album showed the evolution of his family as well as his '49 Ford. Mr. Ernie was 43 years old in 1975 when he bought his truck. "It was a piece of junk when I got it!", Mr Ernie said to me several times. He made sure to let me know that he wanted that quote in this article. :) Mr. Ernie drives one of the first F-1's that Ford created. He has consistently worked on his truck over the past 27 years, Today, under his hood, you will find a '73 model 350 Oldsmobile rocket engine with power steering, 4 wheel disc brakes, Edelbrock carburetor and a H.E.I. distributor. I was honored when he said he would be happy to have me fill a new slot in his photo album of myself with his truck. Kayla

As luck would have it, I met Kayla the 20th Winter Rod Run that the Southern Who Street Rod put on in Covington, LA January 21. Kayla had set up her jewelry booth just across from where we were parked. I knew there was going to be some pin-up girls there and she sure fit the style. So being the newsletter editor I am, and trying to bring you the best news and pictures I can come up with, I naturally went over to meet her. Nice girl.. full of energy and personality. She knows what she wants and is working toward her goals. Kayla is studying art education at the University of Louisiana and started KayBee Designs Jewelry & More. I got a chance to snap a few shots with a local Mississippi street rod you will see featured in the magazine soon. Oh yeah the trophy Kayla is holding, ‌.. She won 1st place. And some day, if you get the chance to meet her, you will know why she was to peoples choice. Jimbo

The 20th Winter Rod Run that the Southern Who Street Rod put on in Covington, LA January 21, had a huge turn out. Lot’s of folks picked out their prime parking spots on Friday night. Saturday morning if you didn’t get there early you would be luck to find a spot. The parking lot was completely filled with car/trucks from everywhere. And the spectator turn out was bigger than anyone expected. This was the old show that had been in Diamondhead for years but when the Southern Who moved their headquarters the moved the show. I must say this is a much better location but with the turn out they may have to find a bigger place. True to the Southern Who the club kept everyone busy with the music, door prizes, games, a dance team that put on a few demonstrations, a pinup girl contest, a birthday party for “Michael” (he was a young fellow who was the recipient of a fundraiser), There was a lot to do. Hats off to Eddie Dias and all the members of Southern Who for a great show. I’ll be there next year.

CAR TUNES Radios are so much a part of the driving experience, it seems like cars have always had them. But they didn’t. Here’s the story. SUNDOWN One evening in 1929 two young men named William Lear and Elmer Wavering drove their girlfriends to a lookout point high above the Mississippi River town of Quincy, Illinois, to watch the sunset. It was a romantic night to be sure, but one of the women observed that it would be even nicer if they could listen to music in the car. Lear and Wavering liked the idea. Both men had tinkered with radios – Lear had served as a radio operator in the U.S. Navy during World War I – and it wasn’t long before they were taking apart a home radio and trying to get it to work in a car. But it wasn’t as easy as it sounds: automobiles have ignition switches, generators, spark plugs, and other electrical equipment that generate noisy static interference, making it nearly impossible to listen to the radio when the engine was running. SIGNING ON One by one, Lear and Wavering identified and eliminated each source of electrical interference. When they finally got their radio to work, they took it to a radio convention in Chicago. There they met Paul Galvin, owner of Galvin Manufacturing Corporation. He made a product called a “battery eliminator” a device that allowed battery-powered radios to run on household AC current. But as more homes were wired for electricity, more radio manufacturers made ACpowered radios. Galvin needed a new product to manufacture. When he met Lear and Wavering at the radio convention, he found it. He believed that mass-produced, affordable car radios had the potential to become a huge business. Lear and Wavering set up shop in Galvin’s factory, and when they perfected their first radio, they installed it in his Studebaker. Then Galvin went to a local banker to apply for a loan. Thinking it might sweeten the deal, he had his men install a radio in the banker’s Packard. Good idea, but it didn’t work – half an hour after the installation, the banker’s Packard caught on fire. (They didn’t get the loan.) Galvin didn’t give up. He drove his Studebaker nearly 800 miles to Atlantic City to show off the radio at the 1930 Radio Manufacturers Association convention. Too broke to afford a booth, he parked the car outside the convention hall and cranked up the radio so that passing conventioneers could hear it. That idea worked – he got enough orders to put the radio into production.

of the biggest. Galvin decided to do the same thing, and since his radio was intended for use in a motor vehicle, he decided to call it the Motorola. But even with the name change, the radio still had problems: When Motorola went on sale in 1930, it cost about $110 uninstalled, at a time when you could buy a brand-new car for $650, and the country was sliding into the Great Depression. (By that measure, a radio for a new car would cost about $3,000 today.) In 1930 it took two men several days to put in a car radio – the dashboard had to be taken apart so that the receiver and a single speaker could be installed, and the ceiling had to be cut open to install the antenna. These early radios ran on their own batteries, not on the car battery, so holes had to be cut into the floorboard to accommodate them. The installation manual had eight complete diagrams and 28 pages of instructions. HIT THE ROAD Selling complicated car radios that cost 20 percent of the price of a brand-new car wouldn’t have been easy in the best of times, let alone during the Great Depression – Galvin lost money in 1930 and struggled for a couple of years after that. But things picked up in 1933 when Ford began offering Motorola's pre-installed at the factory. In 1934 they got another boost when Galvin struck a deal with B.F. Goodrich tire company to sell and install them in its chain of tire stores. By then the price of the radio, installation included, had dropped to $55. The Motorola car radio was off and running. (The name of the company would be officially changed from Galvin Manufacturing to “Motorola” in 1947.) In the meantime, Galvin continued to develop new uses for car radios. In 1936, the same year that it introduced pushbutton tuning, it also introduced the Motorola

Police Cruiser, a standard car radio that was factory preset to a single frequency to pick up police broadcasts. In 1940 he developed with the first handheld two-way radio – the HandieTalkie – for the U.S. Army. A lot of the communications technologies that we take for granted today were born in Motorola labs in the years that followed World War II. In 1947 they came out with the first television to sell under $200. In 1956 the company introduced the world’s first pager; in 1969 it supplied the radio and television equipment that was used to televise Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon. In 1973 it invented the world’s first handheld cellular phone. Today Motorola is one of the secondlargest cell phone manufacturer in the world. And it all started with the car radio. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO The two men who installed the first radio in Paul Galvin’s car, Elmer Wavering and William Lear, ended up taking very different paths in life. Wavering stayed with Motorola. In the 1950’s he helped change the automobile experience again when he developed the first automotive alternator, replacing inefficient and unreliable generators. The invention lead to such luxuries as power windows, power seats, and, eventually, air-conditioning. Lear also continued inventing. He holds more than 150 patents. Remember eight-track tape players? Lear invented that. But what he’s really famous for are his contributions to the field of aviation. He invented radio direction finders for planes, aided in the invention of the autopilot, designed the first fully automatic aircraft landing system, and in 1963 introduced his most famous invention of all, the Lear Jet, the world’s first mass-produced, affordable business jet. (Not bad for a guy who dropped out of school after the eighth grade.) Sent in by : Rattletrapc38

WHAT’S IN A NAME That first production model was called the 5T71. Galvin decided he needed to come up with something a little catchier. In those days many companies in the phonograph and radio businesses used the suffix “ola” for their names – Radiola, Columbiola, and Victrola were three

If you’ve followed my column, you know I was the baby of the family. As I was growing up in the 1960’s, my brothers were teenagers enjoying the 60’s. So I got to experience the 60’s as a little kid through my brother’s eyes. My brothers were Hot Rodders, they were typical teenagers that liked the Beatles, Beach Boys and Roy Orbison. My brothers wore Beatle jackets with no lapels and trim sewn around the edges and boots with the zipper in the side, mohair sweaters and penny loafers.

This photo shows my brother Ken, home on leave from the Navy, with me in my sailor suit and you can see my Dad’s 1941 Dodge coupe and Ken’s Kaiser Darrin in the background. The big oak tree with the rope swing tire that I played upon as a child. The same tree my Dad later died under at the young age of 50 and the black spot in the foreground is Puppy, my best friend growing up. Puppy was my Puff the Magic Dragon. He grieved himself to death when I became a teenager and wasn’t there to play with him any longer. We later built a shop about where the Kaiser was sitting. The family garden was to the right where my mom grew the best turnip greens you ever put in your mouth. That’s my brother Jimmy on the left and Kenneth on the right. Notice Ken’s Beatle jacket! When they would go out, I’d slip into their room and listen to “Meet the Beatles” on the record player, their Beach Boys albums and the first comedy album I ever heard, by Bill Cosby. I’d read their Hot Rod Magazines and find their drag racing trophies Mom and Dad were not supposed to know about. My brother Kenneth had the first Hot Rod that came into my world. A 1934 Ford Coupe, it was gold in color, with three deuces and an open engine. I thought it was the coolest car in the world. It fueled my love for open engine cars. Ken also had another cool car at the same time, a red 1954 Kaiser Darrin convertible. Kaiser only made just over 400 of them. The Kaiser Darrin was a fiberglass two seater sports car that featured

Ken went to fight in Vietnam in the U. S. Navy’s air force in 1966. Ken was in the Navy 4 years and 5 months and never set foot on a ship. He was a flight engineer for the Typhoon Trackers VW1 out of Guam. They flew reconnaissance missions over Vietnam, capturing targets for the U.S. bombing runs. He flew hundreds of missions, logged over 700 hours and took on enemy fire. Ken became a private pilot upon returning home. His claim to fame, in 1969, was landing his Cessna 170 in a tiny field behind my Dads shop. (Ken wanted to get the plane to my Dad’s shop to do a custom paint job.) Dad’s shop was in Dothan, I’m talking about in the city, inside the Ross Clark Circle. It took Ken 7 attempts to get the plane into the neighbor’s tiny pasture that was surrounded by trees. The plan was to come in low over the trees with a low enough air speed to get the plane down on the ground and stopped before it ran into the trees at the other end. The neighbor was a flight instructor at

Fort Rucker. As he and my Dad watched Ken’s attempts to land, the neighbor told my Dad that Ken would not be able to keep it out of the trees, but he did. My mom and I were not allowed to watch, but we waited by the phone to hear he was safely on the ground. It was totally crazy. When the plane was finished the police were called to block the street for takeoff. The police were told what was needed to get the plane in the air, luckily they said they could block off the traffic and didn’t call it in. “Powers that be” would never have let a private plane take off in town on a public street. How he got that plane in and out without major, major problems from the local authorities all the way up to the FAA is also amazing. Of course 1969 was a totally different time than it is today. Ken started his engineering career and the airplane and the Hot Rods were replaced with a family. I guess I helped to refuel his Hot Rod passion, just as he was getting ready to retire. Kenneth has always been a wheeler dealer. I think that was fueled by his Hot Rod days, because you always had to hustle parts back in the day, you didn’t have a whole lot of money. I always said he had rather wheel and deal than eat. You name it and he bought it and sold it. From a fleet of Nuclear Plant trucks to 20 or more wind mills, the stock market, real estate and tax liens. He now owns a million and a half time share points. Plus he makes his own Bio-diesel fuel with a still he constructed. He also has projects stacked up deep for his retirement. But I have him figured out. He loves the hunt, the find, the deal and the acquire. That’s why he has five or six boats, but so far, the acquire is as far as he gets. Anyway, he got the fever for another early 30’s Ford coupe. A 31 Ford Sport Coupe caught his eye in 2010. It was listed on the Internet for $28,000.00, but did not sell. It was then auctioned off but did not meet the reserve. The highest bid was about $7,800.00 and it was right before Christmas in December 2010. The economy was in the tank. So Ken waits a couple days and calls the guy up offers him $8,800 cash, tells the guy he can be there in a couple days to pick it up. The guys said he couldn’t take that offer, so my brother tells the guy that he has his number and if he wants to sell it for $8,800.00 the offer will stand. Now that’s where me and my brother differ. If I want something, I’ll pay the money to get it. It doesn’t mean I won’t negotiate hard, but I’ll leave with it. My brother will walk away after giving his price. He’ll walk and not think twice about it. I would be worried to death someone would steal it from under me if I didn’t move on it. Sure enough a couple days later the guy calls him up and says come get the 31. Now when Ken sends me a picture of the car and I see it, I’m thinking “No you don’t want that car, because someone made a convertible out of it and didn’t cut the doors down. You don’t want to have rollup windows with the door frame still around the window on a convertible.” Well Ken knew it was a rare Sports Coupe and the canvas top was not a convertible, it was a fixed top. In 1931 the Ford Model A sold for $395.00. The Sport Coupe option, the most expensive option, sold for $450.00. Not a lot of the Sport Coupes were sold, compared to the regular old Model A’s. So Ken takes off to Pigeon Forge, TN to inspect and buy the car. When he gets up to Pigeon Forge Ken learns the guy owns a large farm on top of one of the mountains outside of town, but he’s not very old, maybe mid 30’s and he is a farmer and has about 200 acres. He also noticed the guy was limping. So they get the deal done on the 31 and the conversation moves to the guy’s limp. Come to find out, about a year before, the guys wife had called him up on the phone and said he needed to come pick her up, she had been in an accident, she had hit some ice and hit a tree and wrecked the car. Until you’ve experienced driving on icy roads in the mountains, you just can’t imagine how dangerous it can be. The words Gravity and Slick take on very real meanings. Well the guy heads out to pick up his wife, hits the same black ice she did, hits the same tree that she did, but his wreck is much worse,

he cut his leg off. He was wearing a prosthetic leg and was still getting use to it. The guy was buying and selling classic cars to try and make a living while he was down recovering from the accident. When you’re messing with old cars, you really meet some interesting folks and hear some interesting stories. You read in the December column how Ken went to his first car show with the 31 in Panama City Beach, FL and won his first plaque. He is now looking for an enclosed car trailer to use for car shows over 100 miles away.

This is a picture of Ken right after he got the Ford 31 Sport coupe home. You can see the canvas top and full door frame I was talking about. And yes it has a Ford engine. Speaking of car shows…the Barfield brothers are planning on making, lord willing and the creek don’t rise, a car show in April in Pensacola, FL. The 40th Annual Rod-Tiques Sunny Beaches Rod Run for pre-49 vehicles April 20-22 and also the 200+ car event Burning Up the Beaches Car Show in Ft. Walton Beach, FL May 4-6. Both events look good for dragging out the Hot Rod Hotel and taking a good road trip. Of Course the 14th Annual Gnat Nationals Car Show is coming up March 31 down in Bay St. Louis, MS, but that won’t require a long road trip for me. We only have to hang on a little bit longer for spring to be here and the 2012 Car Show season to be in full swing. When I bought my Ford T-Bucket up in Cleveland, Ohio, the guy I bought it from could only enjoy it about three months out of the year. The rest of the time it was on jack stands. The good thing about living on the coast during the wintertime there are still 70 degree days that pop up and you get a chance to get that Hot Rod out of the garage, get out on the road and enjoy the 17 FOREVER Hot Rod State of Mind!

Til next month… Terry - terrymason@aol.com My middle brother Jimmy was killed by a drunk driver on October 30, 2003 in front of the Perdido Bay Condo in Orange Beach, AL. He was sitting at the pedestrian red light on his new Harley, it was his first ride on the bike and he was struck from behind. Beside my immediate family, Ken is the only close family I have left and I’m proud to share the sport of Hot Rodding with him.

Support A Family The prospective father-in-law asked, "young man, can you support a family?" The surprised groom-to-be replied, "well, no. I was just planning to support your daughter. the rest of you will have to fend for yourselves."

What is Hydrographics or Water Transfer Printing? You may know the process by such name as camo dipping, decorative transferring or water transfer printing. They’re all synonyms for the amazing technology of hydrographics. Hydrographics has several names: watertransfer printing, immersion printing, camo dipping, hydro-dipping, liquid printing, decorative transferring, fluid imaging, aqua printing, hydro-imaging, etc. The common denominator, however, is water. Nearly any 3-D object made from plastic, wood, glass, metal and rubber can be decorated regardless of its size or shape. Generally, anything than can be painted can be dipped. Not long ago, this amazing technology was used exclusively by the military to camouflage artillery, weapons and vehicles. Soon, gun, automobile and motorcycles manufacturers were adding decorative camouflage, wood grains, marble and metal detailing to their products. How Water Transfer Printing Works » Seven Steps To Stand Out 1. Pick a Pattern: Immersion Graphics offers hundreds of patterns that range from Realtree® camouflage to wood grains, marbles and metallics. If you can’t find one you like, we will design a pattern for you. Once a pattern is chosen, it is digitized and printed as an exact replica on film.

12

2. Prep a Product: Preparation is key to a successful water transfer. Most product surfaces are cleaned before applying a special primer, which adheres to the item and accepts the inks of the printed decoration. If necessary, objects to be printed are base painted. This determines the pattern’s color, such as the green in camouflage or the brown used in a wood grain. 3. Image Orientation: The pattern or image is then printed on watersoluble polyvinyl film and placed in a vat designed specifically for water-transfer printing. This part of the process is managed either manually or is automated. Sliding baffles keep the printed film in place to achieve a good decoration. 4. Activation: Printed film is sprayed with a chemical activator, which dissolves the film, allowing the pattern to float on water. 5. Immersion: Water follows the contours of the part and forces the inks to penetrate the basecoat. After being fully immersed, the part is removed from the water and the eye can immediately see that the part has taken-on the color and design of the original pattern. Because the graphic is only a few microns thick, decoration is possible for flexible plastic products such as ski goggles, and even molded parts including ATV hoods, fenders and related components. Many sizes and shapes can be decorated from firearms and instrument panels to radio bezels. 6. Rinsing and Drying: After immersion, the product is rinsed and dried. 7. Clear-Coating: In the final process step, the decorated product is covered with an automotive-grade urethane. This gives the object a glossy or matte shine, depending on your preference. The urethane also acts as a protector from harmful UV rays and chemicals that may ruin the pattern. When the final coat has dried, the object is sanded and polished to shine. Hydro Fusion is a local Mississippi Gulf Coast Company that has the equipment and training to custom design a verity of products you may have. I loved driving the Dodgem cars at "Riverside Amusement Park" when I was a kid. You might have called them "Bumper cars. It was a time when I could get behind the wheel and actually control the vehicle ... well somewhat. There were always those other pesky people crashing into you and sending you careening across the metal surface. The ride wasn't any fun without a crowd, though. The more kids we could get out there the more laughs we could have. Laughter abounded! Sometimes I would get rammed so hard my cap would fly right off my head and the car would come clear off the floor as I hit someone head-on. (There was a sign prohibiting head-on collisions as I recall.) I liked seeing the sparks fly from the bars as they touched the electric ceiling. The sparks also shot out from underneath the cars as the drivers got rowdy and zipped across the floor. I enjoyed the feeling of the slick floor as I jumped from the car and ran for the exit so I could get in line to ride again. If there is anyone reading this that does not know what I am referring to, a bumper car is defined as: "a small, carlike electric vehicle with an encircling rubber bumper that one maneuvers around an enclosed arena while purposely bumping other vehicles." Putting it in Cubby's terms they were all out driving fun. The Auto Turnpike held my particular interest as well. Before I was a legal driver, I could go there and wheel the cars around that replica of a real turnpike. My imagination would "go wild" when I was behind the wheel of these passenger car imitations. I pretended to be a race car driver, or driving my hotrod, or a moonshiner, or going to my job, or even a teenager on my way to pick up my date. Sometimes I even had a girl ride with me. The auto rides were always my favorites. As the teenage years arrived, I added the Old Mill to my list of favorites. Boats were ridden into a long dark tunnel and through a replica of a working flour mill. I would take girls on that ride solely to show them the mill. Honestly, that was the only reason. OK, I am telling a lie, I enjoyed being in the dark with chicks. The finale was sitting in the boat as a rusty chain pulled it clanking, up to the top of a steep ramp. When we reached the top, the boat would teeter for a few seconds before inching over and careening down a seemingly endless ramp as it gained speed ' before ending with a gigantic splash at the bottom. We would be soaked. Man, how I loved that ride! There were other rides and attractions at Riverside. There were, of course, the obligatory wooden roller coasters: The Flash and the Thriller. They had the Wild Mouse, Shoot-the-Chutes, Gee Whiz (an electric carousel), Double 8 Railway, a Midway, Tilt-A-Whirl, The Whip, and a large roller skating rink. These all had their place and time in my childhood as well.

I have lots and lots of fond memories associated with "Riverside Amusement Park". It is gone now. The area is now the "Rivers Edge" subdivision. There is not even a skeleton remaining. It lives on in my thoughts ... and the minds of thousands of others. P.S. Here are a couple of photos of some re-purposed bumper cars. I want one!

How to Fix Map Errors on Navigation Devices If you're having problems with information displayed by car navigation systems or handheld personal navigation devices -- wrong addresses, missing location names, closed highway exits, etc. -- it's likely you're experiencing a mapping software issue, not a problem with the Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS Helps You Get Your Coordinates Early GPS devices only gave coordinates. GPS satellites are much simpler than most people think. They cannot track you. They don't have comprehensive map databases like Google Earth. In fact, they have no knowledge of anything on the ground. GPS satellites are just beacons, like lighthouses, that tell you where they are in space. They do not tell you where you are. Your navigation device uses the satellites as reference points to determine your coordinates on the Earth in terms of latitude, longitude, and altitude. Of course, raw coordinates are useless without a map. The earliest GPS receivers did not have built-in maps, so users had to plot their coordinates on paper maps to navigate. Only in recent years has the technology existed to include digital mapping features in affordable navigation devices. Even today, many GPS units don't come with maps -for example, tracking devices used on prisoners and animals. Who Provides the Maps? The maps and other information about roads, addresses, businesses, etc., are loaded onto consumer navigation devices by the commercial companies that manufacture them. The U.S. government's GPS program does not provide any of this data. Modern navigation devices are loaded with information on local hotels, shopping, etc. Most manufacturers get their digital maps and data from commercial map makers (or digital content suppliers), the largest being NavTeq and Tele Atlas. Some device manufacturers develop their own maps. In addition to maps, many navigation devices offer features such as route suggestions, traffic alerts, and voice announcements of turns and street names. These extras are provided by the device manufacturers and have nothing to do with the GPS satellites. Why Are My Maps/Routes Incorrect? If your navigation device says you are driving off-road when you aren't, it's possible your GPS coordinates are correct, but your device is drawing the road incorrectly. Some information in your navigation device may be based on older maps prepared before the era of GPS precision. Also, maps require constant updates to stay accurate. Roads continually change due to construction, temporary detours, etc. New housing developments and business parks appear every week. And restaurants and stores are always opening, closing, relocating, or changing names. Maps need constant updating to keep up with changing roads and traffic patterns. Even a brand new vehicle with an installed navigation system could have outdated map information if, for example, it sat at the dealership for a few months before you bought it. If you do not install the latest maps or subscribe to an update service, your navigation system will fall even

18

further behind the times. Another cause of map errors is the software that approximates the location of street addresses. For example, say you live at 150 Main Street, next to a large property that occupies two-thirds of the block. Lacking a plot-by-plot map of your neighborhood, a navigation device may assume your home is halfway up the block, leading delivery trucks to the wrong location. Devices providing route assistance need both their maps and software to be up to date, or they may make bad suggestions, such as taking a dirt road through someone's private property. In any case, homes and businesses are required to have their addresses clearly visible from the street. More importantly, drivers are still responsible for observing posted road signs and using common sense. What Can I Do To Fix Map/Route Errors? Most devices can connect to a computer to receive new maps and software. The first thing to do is find out if there is an updated map available for your device. Most navigation device makers charge a fee for map updates, but some offer one update for free. Some also offer free access to user-submitted map fixes. Review your user manual and contact your device manufacturer to learn the best way to update it. If your device is up to date -- or you are concerned about errors on other people's devices -- you can report the problem to the digital content suppliers. It usually makes sense to submit the same correction to both NavTeq and Tele Atlas. Their websites allow the public to submit map corrections. The following links are provided for informational purposes only; the U.S. government does not endorse any products, services, or views found on external sites. NavTeq Map Reporter http://mapreporter.navteq.com Tele Atlas Map Insight http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedback Some navigation devices allow users to enter map fixes directly on screen, then upload them to the manufacturer and/or other users when connected to the Internet. Once you submit a map or route correction, the content providers typically verify and implement it through a map update. This can take weeks, months, or years, depending on the provider. The change won't show up in your device until you download and install the update. Likewise, it won't show up on anyone else's device unless they also apply the update or buy a brand new device.

Salsbury Facts By: Dave Kyte Hi Jimbo, Salsbury scooters have been in production since the 1930's. My Salsbury is a model 85 built in 1948. This model was the last produced before the company went out of business about a year later. It is powered by a single cylinder rubber mounted 6hp engine manufactured by the Salsbury company. This engine was also manufactured for industrial use and was used in many different applications after world war ll. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel by a Salsbury torque converter. My understanding is that Mr Salsbury invented this converter for use in his scooters. Salsbury torque converters were still in production as late as the mid 1990's and were standard equipment on many snow mobiles. The company was bought out by the Comet Company at that time. Salsbury motors was a division of the Wayne manufacturing company and was located in Pomona California. The design was considered very aero dynamic and was inspired by the post war aircraft industry. Unique features are a floor mounted gas pedal, automatic transmission (torque converter), and a single sided rear swing arm. The front suspension is also single sided. Also unique at the time was the cone shaped front end and the boat tail rear. Billed as the scooter of the future, and faster in traffic than a car, but it had no brake light or front brake. Top speed is estimated at 40 mph. I bought my Salsbury on January 26, 2001 at a swap meet in Turlock California. It had been trucked there from Utah by a gent who was visiting a friend in California and decided to bring something to sell while at the meet. He was asking $1500 and I was first in line. I knew he would not negotiate as there was a crowd behind me waiting for me to walk away. I stepped up and paid the price. It was all there except the piston and piston rod. It was however in pieces and needed a total resto. I spent the next couple of years restoring it to its present condition. This included a new piston and rod and a complete engine rebuild. It has won me many trophies and always draws a crowd. In July of 2001 the Salsbury restorers society was born in Portland Indiana. It now has over 300 members internationally.

Invest in South Mississippi Most of us do business where we perceive we receive the best value for our time and money. Perceptions, however, are not always accurate when we are lacking some essential information for a fully informed decision. We see, hear about and do business with out-of-state-owned businesses every day, but are collectively under-informed about the many important values locally owned businesses provide us, individually and as a community. Here are just a few facts to consider when making that next purchase. A recent study showed that locally owned, independent businesses put close to 70% more money back into their local community than out-of-stateowned businesses. Local businesses are owned by people who live here, work here and have a vested interest in our community with much more than just their dollars. Community involvement and charitable donations are on average 350% higher from local business owners than they are from non-locally owned businesses. Local businesses account for the largest share of net new jobs generated each year and are the roots that feed the tree of a prosperous community. Feed the roots, think “local first.”

Make Plans to Attend the Season Opener at Gulf Coast Motorsports Park Kart racing is generally accepted as the most economic form of motorsport available on four wheels. As a free-time activity, it can be performed by almost anybody, and as a motorsport in itself, it is one of the sports permitting licensed racing for anyone from the age of 8 onward. In the USA, many organizations regulate racing. Some associations, organize race meetings throughout the country. A variety of kart circuits permit the sport to be practiced. Racing classes start at age 7 or 8 and generally run in 3-year age groupings or weight divisions until "senior" status is reached at age 15 or 16, depending on the series. Kart racing is usually used as a low-cost and relatively safe way to introduce drivers to motor racing. Many people associate it with young drivers, but adults are also very active in karting. Karting is considered the first step in any serious racer's career. It can prepare the driver for high-speed wheel-to-wheel racing by helping develop quick reflexes, precision car control, and decision-making skills. In addition, it brings an awareness of the various parameters that can be altered to try to improve the competitiveness of the kart (examples being tire pressure, gearing, seat position, chassis stiffness) that also exist in other forms of motor racing. Almost all of todays drivers grew up racing karts, most prominent among them, World Champions like Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Fernando Alonso, Kimi RäikkÜnen, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. Many NASCAR drivers also got their start in racing from karts, such as Darrell Waltrip, Lake Speed, Ricky Rudd, Juan Pablo Montoya, Tony Stewart, and Jeff Gordon.

A sixteen year-old boy came home with a new Chevrolet Avalanche and his parents began to yell and scream, 'Where did you get that truck???!!!' He calmly told them, 'I bought it today.' 'With what money?' demanded his parents. They knew what a Chevrolet Avalanche cost. 'Well,' said the boy, 'this one cost me just fifteen dollars.' So the parents began to yell even louder. 'Who would sell a truck like that for fifteen dollars?' they said. God 'It was the lady up the street,' said the boy. I don't know her name they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy a Chevrolet Avalanche for fifteen dollars.' 'Oh my Goodness!,' moaned the mother, 'she must be a child abuser. Who knows what she will do next? John, you go right up there and see what's going on.' So the boy's father walked up the street to the house where the lady lived and found her out in the yard calmly planting petunias! He introduced himself as the father of the boy to whom she had sold a new Chevrolet Avalanche for fifteen dollars and demanded to know why she did it. 'Well,' she said, 'this morning I got a phone call from my husband. I thought he was on a business trip, but learned from a friend he had run off to Hawaii with his mistress and really doesn't intend to come back. He claimed he was stranded and needed cash, and asked me to sell his new Chevrolet Avalanche and send him the money. So I did.' (Are women good or what?) Housework was a woman's job, but one evening, Janice arrived home from work to find the children bathed, one load of laundry in the washer and another in the dryer. Dinner was on the stove, and the table set. She was astonished! It turns out that Dave had read an article that said, 'Wives who work full-time and had to do their own housework were too tired to have sex'. The night went very well. The next day, Janice told her friends all about it. 'We had a great dinner. Dave even cleaned up the kitchen. He helped the kids do their homework, folded all the laundry and put it away. I really enjoyed the evening.' 'But what about afterward?' asked her friends. 'Oh, that........... Dave was too tired.' God is good Entering a classroom at MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station,) Yuma, a female Marine Captain encountered a clearly apathetic audience. She was selected to provide a full hour's instruction on Iraqi electronic warfare capabilities to 150 Marine aviators who showed by their body language deep skepticism about her ability to teach war fighting skills to an allmale class. She began by noting that her voice had just been tested to see if it was suitable for some new cockpit recorder messages for Marine aircraft. She said that unfortunately she had not been selected to be the new "Bitching Betty." However, she said it was only fair to warn the audience the reason given for her non-selection was that an analysis of her voice pattern revealed that her particular voice had a tendency to lull to sleep any male homosexual within earshot. The assembled officers shot upright in their chairs. 150 pairs of eyes were wide open and locked on her and stayed that way for the rest of the period. Now don't you just love these female Marines? Donald Duck and Daisy Duck were spending the night together in a hotel room and Donald wanted to have sex with Daisy. The first thing Daisy asked was, "Do you have a condom?" Donald frowned and said, "No." Daisy told Donald that if he didn't get a condom, they could not have sex. "Maybe they sell them at the front desk," she suggested. So Donald went down to the lobby and asked the hotel clerk if they had condoms. "Yes, we do," the clerk said and pulled a box out from under the counter and gave it to Donald. The clerk asked, "Would you like me to put them on your bill?" "Thit No!" Donald quacked, "I'd thuffocate!"

Two older guys were sitting on their usual park bench one morning. The 87-year-old had just finished his morning jog. The 80-year-old was amazed at his friend's stamina and asked him what he did to have so much energy. The 87-year-old said, "Well, I eat rye bread every day. It keeps your energy level high and you'll have great stamina with the ladies." So, on the way home, the 80-year-old stops at the bakery. As he was looking around, the lady asked if he needed any help. He said, "Do you have any Rye bread?" She said, "Yes, there's a whole shelf of it. Would you like some?" He answered, "I want 5 loaves." She said, "My goodness, 5 loaves! By the time you get to the 3rd loaf, it'll be hard." He replied, "I can't believe it, everybody knows about this but me!" Two women were playing golf. One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole. The ball hit one of the men. He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in agony. The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately began to apologize. Please allow me to help. I'm a Physical Therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me, she told him. “Oh, no, I'll be all right. I'll be fine in a few minutes,” the man replied. He was in obvious agony, lying in the fetal position, still clasping his hands there at his groin. At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside. She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked, “How does that feel”? He replied: “It feels great, but I still think my thumb's broken”!

At dawn the telephone rings, "Hello, Senor Rod? This is Ernesto, the caretaker at your country house." "Ah yes, Ernesto. What can I do for you? Is there a problem?" "Um, I am just calling to advise you, Senor Rod, that your parrot, he is dead. "My parrot? Dead? The one that won the International competition?" "Si, Senor, that's the one." "Damn! That's a pity! I spent a small fortune on that bird. What did he die from? "From eating the rotten meat, Senor Rod." "Rotten meat? Who the hell fed him rotten meat?" "Nobody, Senor. He ate the meat of the dead horse." "Dead horse? What dead horse?" "The thoroughbred, Senor Rod." "My prize thoroughbred is dead?" "Yes, Senor Rod, he died from all that work pulling the water cart." "Are you insane? What water cart?" "The one we used to put out the fire, Senor." "Good Lord! What fire are you talking about, man?" "The one at your house, Senor! A candle fell and the curtains caught on fire". "What the hell? Are you saying that my mansion is destroyed because of a candle?!" "Yes, Senor Rod." "But there's electricity at the house! What was the candle for?" "For the funeral, Senor Rod." "WHAT BLOODY FUNERAL??!!" "Your wife's, Senor Rod". She showed up very late one night and I thought she was a thief, so I hit her with your new Ping G15 204g titanium head golf club with the TFC 149D graphite shaft." SILENCE.......... LONG SILENCE.........VERY LONG SILENCE. THEN "Ernesto, if you broke that driver, you're in some serious trouble!!!!"

I don't dislike Winter, I dislike the lack of car related events to go to. You feel the same way, right? I know, some of you that live in places where the weather isn't too harsh and still have lots of opportunities to get the car out and cruise. We had a high temp of 65 last Sunday and I talked my Mr. into gettin' the Galaxie out, but dang it, I had to dress like 'Nanook' of the North with long sleeves, a heavy sweater, long pants, hat, gloves, and a blanket for my lap! Needless to say, goin' topless may not have been the smartest thing to do. Nooooo . . . The Car Was Topless!!! Get your mind out of the gutter, didn't you read where I said long sleeves and a sweater!!! Seriously, it was nice to get out but it was a little chilly! I know that for many gearheads, this is the time to do the repairs and other tweekin' that didn't get done durin' the show season. We had big plans but they haven't exactly come to fruition . . . yet! Other than that, if you know me at all you know I have a thing for historic things and places, so here's my latest concern. In 1921, candy and tobacco magnate Jessie G. Kirby said to his investor, Dallas, Texas Physician Rueben W. Jackson, concernin' his new idea for a roadside food stand, “People in their cars are so lazy that they don't want to get out of them to eat!” Kirby's idea was for a restaurant where families could drive up in their car, order, and have their food delivered to the window. This idea was fueled by the newly found mobility via automobile ownership, ownership that soared from six million to over twenty-seven million by decades end. In the Fall of 1921, the first Pig Stand opened along the busy DallasFort Worth Highway, and hoards of motorist made their way to the ultimate 'eat-in-your-car' experience and feasted in their car on the signature 'Pig Sandwich,' a wonderful hand held creation, and a frosty bottle of Dr. Pepper, another Texas invention. The food was good and eatin' in the car was revolutionary but in the beginnin' the 'Car Hops' were young men and the competition between them was fierce. Royce Hailey, was one of these boys who would hop on the runnin' boards of those Model-T's and tells that he hopped off twenty-five years later as president of the company. Quite the visionary, Hailey and his Pig Stands are also credited with inventin' the Chicken Fried Steak, Texas toast and Onion Rings!! Oh Emm Geee!! So, why am I tellin' you all this? Because the first Pig Stand opened in Beaumont, Texas in 1924 and in November of 2006 the last Beaumont location closed and now the iconic structure is slated for demolition. Not only is this a loss of great history but the buildin' is iconic with its circular “flying saucer” design, neon lights and wavy parkin' canopy. In 2010, the Society for Commercial Archeology listed the building as one of the nation's top 10 most endangered roadside attractions. Although historic preservationists found it would be too expensive to save the building, there is a group, “S.O.P.” . . . Save Our Pig, workin' diligently to save this property. These S.O.P.ers, as they call themselves, are workin' feverishly to raise funds through donations, grants, and sales of t-shirts and such. Check out the site at www.saveourpig.com to follow their progress and maybe even make a donation. To me, savin' these buildings is like savin' a part of our Country's

evolution. These “road side eateries,” as well as old service stations and hotels, are as much a part of the industrial revolution as Route 66 and they deserve to be saved. Piggie Power: A United Front Okay, I'm steppin' off my soapbox for now . . . on with your regular programmin'.

by: Larry Dunham Some are in wheel chairs, most are dead, none of my articles have they read, but somehow my thoughts always return to them. Before I get to “Memory Time” I have to talk about GTG (good to go) up on 603 just 1 mile from interstate 10. My station wagon’s tranny started acting up so I called a couple of places and I’m getting $600.00 or more due to the over drive function. I drove into Good to Go, walked up to the shop entrance and there were at least 20 trannys sitting there out of the cars, and waiting to be sold! I talked to Gordon and was advised $100.00 and up. It depends on make & model. Look into this place, to save money and on anything auto! 40 years ago, one of my mental hero was named “Dan” (FBI FILES) or D.B. Cooper. He Hi jacked a plane going to Seattle for $200,000. Today that $200,000 comes to about 8 million. The only hi jacker that “got it done” and was never captured. Way to go D.B! Here’s to you! I always mention some boxers out of California, mostly Hollywood where my good pal Norm Bishop, (who is no longer with us) used to mention frequently. When we were all talking boxing in his bar, one night he brought up movie actor Jack Palance. Born 1918 he grew up in the coal mines of Pennsylvania, became a boxer, stood 6’3” won 15 fights, 12 by knock out, and then enlisted in the air corp. during WWII, became a bomber pilot and received the purple heart. I didn’t know him, but I met his wife at one of Norms parties. Jack made many films and was nominated for supporting actor “Oscar” in 1991 for his role in “City Slickers”. When on stage, (at 73 years old) he dropped down, did 12 one arm push ups, got up and calmly stated that age had nothing to do with success. They asked him why he did those push ups and his reply was “I couldn’t put up with the “age thing” that come up for jobs in Hollywood. Back to racing in 1940’s & 50’s in So. Calif., midgets, stocks, and anything that would get you to the Indy 500. (the dream of all drivers at that time) another of my favorite tracks was the ¼ mile dirt at Gardena, Calif. Called Western Speedway. Aggie used to promote it and that’s where Parnelli Jones got his start driving “Jalopies” and then

“Street Stocks”. Dick Lane the movie actor was the announcer and he was really good! They showed the races on black & white T.V. in those days. A few years ago when I first started writing these articles I mentioned the following story (true). A band leader called “Spike Jones” (not the spike of today) this was in 1950. He had a rail frame Offy Midget that was very fast! He decided to sell out and found a buyer whose parents had a family TV show. He was the oldest of 2 boys and really wanted it. His first name was David and he didn’t tell his parents that he bought it! The first night out at Gardena he put “Porky” Rockawitz in the car. Porky is sitting in the car, right behind me as we lined up to qualify. All of a sudden 3 guys walk up to Porky in the car, unsnap the seat belt, and Porky blows his top! “Get your damn hands off this car" he says. Now Porky would fight a buzz saw and spot it the 1st punch! All 3 of these guys were from LA and San Pedro and were wearing slacks and sport coats. Porky tells me later, “this one guy unsnaps my belt, looks at me slides back his sport coat and shows me a .45 automatic in a shoulder holster” and says “were taking the car, OK”? Porky climbs out, the car gets put on the trailer, and was never seen again. You might think you know who David was, if you don’t his little brother was a very popular singer, you will notice I said “was”. One persons lack of talent can make a difference in your life or death. Any fool can tell the truth, but a smart man can lie well ask any lawyer! Now for Debbie, Min, Lee, Kayle, Linda and others who patiently read all the “tech stuff” that my “warden” calls it. Remember its 1946, I’m starting college on the G.I. Bill, and am driving my 1940 Ford Coupe. Black fender skirts, long shackles In the back to lower it, and flipper disc hubcaps on front wheels. So, one night at the “Capitola” skating rink I “hooked up” with Donna, a “darling child” who would be 84 this day, but was “knocked out pretty” as

STOP BY MY SHOP… Oh yeah.. I forgot…. you don’t know where it’s at.

Let them know Advertise in Gulf Coast MotorSports Magazine

228-596-0664 George Strait says in his song. After the rink closed, we jumped in the Ford and I started to take her home. She had “36’s” on the top, and 24 or so around the middle (who didn’t look good at 20 years old?) Long brown hair, brown eyes, and probably the softest lips in town. She slid over, tucked her head on my right shoulder, and unbuttoned the two middle buttons on my shirt. I dropped my right hand down on her knee as she slid her hand inside my shirt. Now Salem (Oregon) was the capital city, but population was 25,000 after the war (WWII) so I’m trying to figure out how to get “friendly” in my 1940 Ford business coupe. No back seat and very narrow front seat! I’m heading for her house in South Salem, and I head up Market St. for the grave yard. (Cemetery) She is busy kissing me on the neck as I turn in, no fences or gates in those days, and pull to a stop in the middle where there is parking. Well it was a summer night, the radio was on. (40 Ford Deluxe) I opened my door, walked around the car, opened her door and gently laid her head on seat by the steering wheel. This just wasn’t working, Donna says why don’t we get on the grass? Well there we are, grave stones all around but there are times the surroundings don’t count, right? I never write about anything unless it’s true. I think the grave yard romance was one for the book right? So, until next month, KEEP IT BETWEEN THE FENCES Larry Dunham usaclarry@yahoo.com

by: Lynn Makua It’s been way too cold in the early a.m., but we gals get to break out our fur lined coats, jackets and boots which is nice for change. Don’t you think? I still can’t bring myself to wear pants no matter how cold it gets. (don’t even own any) I drive Pineapple’s Bad Boys crazy when I come to work at Harold & Lillian’s in Clermont Harbor (sat. & sun. 8am5pm) with a nice warm jacket and short shorts. I also drive Bartender Debbie of Anita’s Bar thinks I’m crazy. She say’s what if it gets to 20 degree’s? I just smile. Anita’s has 2 for one well on weekdays 4-6pm. I do enjoy a cocktail from time to time and 2 for one does not hurt. In Hawaii for the last 100 years, the temperature has never gone blow 59, and there is a 15 mile an hour breeze 24 hours a day. I love it here, but if they (he) forced me back to the Islands I wouldn’t argue about it, just go! (with a smile) Since I’m in the Hawaiian mood again. I would like you read about my Uncle Blue. The Honolulu Advertiser: The most remarkable competitive record in the Molokai & Oahu race complied by Blue Makua, Sr. Between 1958 and 1963, he steered the Waikiki Surf Club to six straight championships, and in eleven races from 1953 through 1963, he was a member of eight winning teams. When he won in 1958, the newspapers reported that waves reached heights of fifteen feet and badly damaged two canoes, one of which split on one side. Conditions in 1961, according to the newspapers, were worse: high winds, occasional twenty-foot swells, and blinding rain squalls.

One of Uncle Blue’s good friends was Chick Daniels. During his fifty years as head beachboy at Royal Hawaiian Hotel, he handed out towels, umbrellas, and advice. He was known as the happiest Hawaiian. In one week

he made $2,000 in tips. That’s like $20,000 now. Chick always answered his phone, “I’m ready” --- Michael McPherson, Beachboy. Have you been to “Dempseys” yet? See their ad here for hours, address and phone. They moved from Lakeshore and Lower Bay Road to Kiln. Huge parking lot, and light traffic on the street. I was there at lunch time, about 20 tables that seat 4, 1 for 12 people, 2 for 6 people, and the place was full! The full service bar seats 14, there are tables for 4, in the bar, and there were 4 diners eating there. I love the bar (that’s where I have lunch and a nice glass of wine) The food is to die for. The hours will suit everybody! Coming back down 603 on my left, used to be “Sawed Off” but now has new owners and the place is called “Red’s Pub”. (see the ad here) It is a bar and grill with lunch specials at $6.95 and draft beer for $1.00. Happy hour all day on bottle beer @ $2.00. They should be getting their liquor license in 1 or 2 weeks. They open 10a.m. serve food until 10pm. Lunch specials 10-2 – nice clean bar 6 tables, pool tables, juke box, and a good kitchen! Sunday night I went by Anita’s on 90, stopped in because the Karaoke player is “Mike Woods”. He does Karaoke for Harold & Lillian’s Fri. & Sat. and any special occasions she has. Sir David one of Pineapple’s bad boys of Harold & Lillian’s had surprise birthday party at 8 in the morning and Mike Woods did Karaoke at 10am with Marilyn the owner. (featured singer ) She is so good. I just thought of my uncle blue. Mom told me that after the war (WWII) the cruise ships would come in to the harbor at Honolulu (where the Aloha Tower still stands). The tourists would buy rolls of 50 cent pieces and stand by the rail and throw them into the water for the locals to dive for. There would be 10 or 15 of my relatives swimming along side and diving for them. Uncle Blue used to dive down put them in his mouth, (said maybe 10 or 12) while the rest of them were putting them in their suits. He was getting more because he didn’t have to drop his hands down to put them in his trunks. By the way, my favorite bar in Gulfport called “Tiffen Room” on 34St. serves “champagne splits”. If you like Mimosa’s just ask for a splash of O.J. Marilyn has just put them in at Harold & Lillian’s. Splits are very popular in Waikiki. Don’t forget to get your Pizza’s at “Red Hots” next to Club Red. They both have ads and the hours are exceptional at both places. They share the same building just off Dunbar & Hi Way 90. Where else can you get a pizza at 2:00 a.m. but Club Red with music to with it! You can also get it to go till 2 a.m. Lower Bay road and Lakeshore (where you turn left for the Silver Slipper) is where the former employment and administrative offices

used to be. As I drove by I noticed a new sign on the building announcing “ Crickets Honky Tonk”. Curiosity got me, so I pulled in where the crew was working. My guess is its 8000 to 10,000 sq. ft. (but what do I know?) Larry (one of my customers at the bar) and Cricket himself showed me around the inside. They have a huge stage adorned with old (real) saddles, they are going to have a bucking bull, (ala Urban Cowboy) and many other western artifacts. The bar they are building will seat probably 50, not to mention the tables around the huge dance floor. You will see their ad and instructions on how & when to get there as it gets completed. Looks like 2 months away to me. Well I’m headed for Harold & Lillian’s for my Hawaiian Sunset (cocktail) and then I have to go home & feed “ EASY” (My 1/2 Siamese Cat). So time to be a “family” person again and turn domestic for “EASY” Watch next month for some of my old and new places

This month we have Matt Williams 1961 GMC truck as our feature ride. One of my favorite years, the truck has a great stance and looks like a fun driver. Story on the truck: Matt left on a Friday night in August on a road trip from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to Garden City, Kansas. The Garmin said would take 14 hours one way which was actually 21 hours one way. The guy Matt bought the truck from was nice enough to bolt the cab to the frame and threw some bolts in the rear end so that it was a rolling chassis. Matt set the windshield on the seat though at some point it slid to the floor and road the rest of the way home there (without breaking or cracking). The rest of the truck came home in bushel baskets and boxes. He got home on Sunday afternoon, by Monday afternoon had the body assembled and the truck in a rolling form and within a month had it motor, tranny, and brake lines plumbed and had her on the road. Matt said he is the third owner and has a copy of the original title of the truck. It was just a 1961 GMC 100 305 V6 4speed‌... now it is a 350 Chevy with a 700r4 auto with 5 inch suspension drop and front suspension upgraded to 85 Chevy front brakes and engine cradle. 34

Zoe Scarlett This month we feature the Pin-Up beauty Zoe Scarlett. We love that she embodies a look and presence that not only makes a stunning photo today, but would also make her a star had she been born a 50?s blonde bombshell. Zoe has a classic sensual edge to her work that creates an effortless glamour appeal. BIO: Born & raised in Basel / Switzerland, Zoe Scarlett had a passion for Elvis Presley and the Rockabilly movement at a young age already. In her childhood days she likes to remember the family excursions to flea markets, Oldtimer car shows or Drag races. Together with her older brothers she was brought up in the middle of antiques, American cars and the 50?s vibe. In 2006 Zoe’s first Pin Up pictures were published on magazine covers worldwide. Followed by various TV programs, ad campaigns, sponsorships and ambassador contacts. In 2007 Burger King has equipped a restaurant with Zoe Scarlett’s pictures. Shortly after she was nominated for the Swiss TV award “Glory” as the best Newcomer of the Year. In 2009 Zoe arranged a Burlesque show with a glass dance for Cynar (Gruppo Campari), later that year Zoe worked in front of the camera as a model for Davidoff Cigarettes. Her stunning appearances through her young career have brought her engagements such as the new campaign of the world famous Ars-Vivendy Nylon Stockings. A honorable job, performed by the most famous international burlesque dancers before. Later that year Zoe Scarlett became the first contemporary PIN UP beauty, to grace the Italian bottle of Abbondio Aranciata lemonade. More over she appeared in the Italian edition of VOGUE in 2010. This month we have Stefen Winchester as our feature photographer/artist. Stefen has some great automotive, bike and pinup photos, all taken with great attention to detail and classic style. Take a look at some of his fine work. Bio: I have been fascinated with vintage cars and bike since I was a kid and for reasons I didn’t understand, I looked at things differently than most, noticing intricate details often missed by other that were looking at the very same things I was. When I was 10, I saved up enough money to by my very first camera, A Fred Flinstone Camera which took 110 film. It wasn’t until 2009 ( some 35 years later ) that I was asked to do a photoshoot for a woman that wanted pictures of herself with her vintage restored 68 Camaro. I had never photographed a car before ( or anything with wheels for that matter) so I was a bit nervous at first ( The client was expecting a seasoned auto photographer and I actually never corrected her) All of that disappeared within seconds of the first shot, when I quickly realized I could nail a magazine quality image in less than 30 seconds without even trying..everything fell into place and I knew instantly the best angle and exact moment the natural light would make for a perfect shot. Word got around quickly within 24 hours and next thing I knew, I had 38 more cars to shoot, making my one day roadtrip into a 10 day vacation.. PAID! I shoot with Carl Zeiss and old School Minolta lenses, which have unparallelled color and sharpness, requiring no post edit work, save for the occasional edit I may do to add some custom Graphics or art piece for print, preferring to keep it as original as possible, as it was back in the day when these amazing cars rolled off the assembly line and into the lives of those with a life long passion for custom cars and HotRods.
