SUNNYSIDE SCOOP OCTOBER, 2016 Principal Points October 2016 Hands on Learning Sunnyside Families, What a great start to the school year it has been. Everyday I’m able to watch as our students come into the building smiling, laughing, and ready to learn. As a building we continue to increase the amount of technology our students have access to. This year we now have Chromebook carts in every homeroom between 2nd and 5th as well as adding some makerspace carts to our building. Last December I wrote about the Makerspace Movement as one of the ways schools are integrating hands-on learning into classrooms. Sunnyside now has three makerspace carts, and will soon be adding a fourth, to the building. We have a Lego cart, an Edison Robot (Lego based robotics programming) and Lego cart, and a Make-Do (cardboard creations) cart for teachers to pull into their classrooms to enhance learning. We will also be adding a fourth card with Bee-Bots to focus on primary programming skills as well. It’s exciting to watch as teachers pull in a cart to change the way students learn. For instance, in one of our first grade classrooms a teacher pulled the Lego cart into the classroom and had students build a butterfly in partners to show symmetry tying in a math lesson into the science lessons they were learning about butterflies. In second grade a teacher was using Legos to teach partner skills as students were able to build a rocket out of Legos. Students partnered together to design, create a materials list, and construct their rocket. While the skill they were working on was planning together with a partner, they engaged in basic levels of engineering and planning as part of the lesson. In another second grade classroom a teacher began using QRcodes for students to find good fit books as part of their online reading practice. These are just a few of the examples teachers are using to help students prepare for the digital world they now live in. Having technology for the sake of having technology will never be our goal. It is our goal to converge best practices of instruction with innovation. It is about developing a pathway for our students to become leaders and innovators, especially in their formative elementary years. It’s going to be a great year ahead! Principal Nathan Flansburg

Band News: 5th Grade Band is up and running with our Monday morning practices for anyone who was in summer band. Our lessons have also started for every band member. We hope to get all students just beginning on instruments ready for these Monday morning practices as soon as possible! It is going to be a great group this year!
Chess Club: Chess Club starts October 6th at 7:30 am in the MultiPurpose Room and will meet every Thursday morning thereafter. Come meet our New Chess Coach, Chip Gruver and join the FUN. Volunteers are needed. Parents/Guardians DO NOT need to be expert chess players in order to help - all are welcome. A willing spirit is all we need. PLEASE SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER :)
Sunnyside Glee Club:
All 4th and 5th grade students are invited to join this year's GLEE CLUB! Glee Club will meet on Friday mornings from 7:45-8:30 in the Music Room. A registration form should have come home with your student in his/ her daily classroom mail. Please email Mrs. Rognlin with any questions.
Community Education Before/After School Activities: Welcome to a new school year! Community Education will be offering many fun and educational before/after school activities for students in grades K - 12, during the school year. In following the district's example of "going green" we are no longer distributing flyers for our Community Education activities. To find out what is being offered by Community Education at your child's school, follow these easy steps: 1. Go to www.moundsviewschools.org 2. Select "Our Schools" and the name of your child's school. 3. On the left side of that school’s webpage you will see a "Find it Fast" column, scroll down to "Sitemap" and click on it. 4. Scroll down on the new page to "News" and click on "E-flyers". This will bring up flyers from not only Community Education but other organizations as well. If you click on any of the activities you will find registration forms and or flyers for that activity. 5. You will have the opportunity to print a flyer or if you wish to register online (Community Education activities only). Looking at the right side of this page, click on the appropriate link ie.Youth Enrichment, Middle School Enrichment for High School Activities and select the desired activity you wish to register for online. All activities are listed by school name and then by name of activity. New activities are always being added. Check back frequently as many activities fill quickly.
Carpool Procedures: To ensure the safety of all during the carpool process, we would like each car to have a name tag on their car visor with the student’s name they are picking up. We have already been handing them out, but if you did not receive one or need an extra one, we have more in the office. We would appreciate if you would display the sign each time you come through the carpool line and remain in line until the car in front of you leaves. Please continue to pull forward in the lane as cars load students and leave. Thank you for your help with this!
PTA News: The Sunnyside PTA would like to invite you to come check out what we're all about! Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month from 6:00-7:00pm in the Sunnyside Library. If this sounds like something you would be interested in please contact Shauna Bock at: shauna.bock@gmail.com

Kudos to Sunnyside Teacher: We just wanted to acknowledge a 2nd grade teacher, Amy TerEick, for her role in a National Math Program. This summer, Ms. TerEick served as a staff member for an intensive 3 week Teacher Leadership Program for the Mathematics Institute. Staff members spent a total of 150 hours or more during those 3 weeks facilitating this program. Great job Amy!

Make Every Day Count: Boost School Attendance
T
o stay on track in school, students need to be present every day. Missing 18 or more days of school in a year puts a child’s high school graduation at risk, according to AbsencesAddUp.org, a national chronic absenteeism prevention campaign. Being absent for just two days every month of the school year can put a child behind academically. Students with regular attendance are more likely to read well by third grade and score higher on tests. They also tend to be more engaged in school and feel better about themselves. Put your child on the path to success with these attendance strategies. Make school a priority. Every absence (excused or not), can impact a child’s academic achievement. Talk to your child about how important their education is. Make daily routines for homework and waking up on time for school. Maintain communication with teachers and keep an eye on your child’s academic progress. If your child seems disconnected from school or is prone to skipping class, try signing him or her up for an after-school activity. A report by the University of Minnesota found that students in an after-school program attended 18 more days of school and missed nine fewer than their peers. Make a plan. If your schedule or transportation situation makes getting your child to school a challenge, ask for assistance. Make a carpool or transportation plan with other parents or family members, or ask your school principal for community programs or school initiatives that may help. Report In. Know your school’s attendance policies. If an absence or early dismissal is unavoidable, contact your school. If your family’s religious observances fall on school days, let teachers know early in the year which days your child will miss. Carefully weigh sick days. If your child is sick, talk with your health care provider to determine whether they should stay home from school. If the doctor or nurse recommends that your child stay home, find out exactly how long and on what conditions he or she can return to class (for example, after 24 hours of antibiotics).
Before keeping your children home, make sure they aren’t faking symptoms. Regularly feigning sickness may be a sign that your child is anxious about facing a challenge at school, such as bullying. Schedule wisely. Know your school’s calendar, and arrange doctor and dentist appointments after school, on weekends, or during holiday breaks, if possible. Resist the urge to schedule vacations when students will miss school. This gives students the impression that school is not a priority. Help students complete assignments. When your child has to miss school, make arrangements with teachers to pick up a packet of make-up work. Ensure that your child follows through, and be available to explain concepts or monitor their work. If your child’s absence will be lengthy (for surgery, for instance), alert teachers as soon as you know and pick up assignments as the days go on.
Web Resources Absences Add Up offers a list of reasons why kids might miss school, and offers solutions for parents looking to keep their kids learning. www.absencesaddup.com/reasons-why-kids-miss-school This infographic, How Sick is Too Sick fo School?, can help families decide which symptoms should keep students at home. http://bit.ly/2cuqbvG Attendance Works offers research, webinars, and handouts designed with elementary and middle-level parents in mind. http://www.attendanceworks.org/tools/
