pre-season checklist

Whether you re an o road enthusiast, road rider or city commuter these key checks are a must before you saddle up…

PEDALS / CRANK
BE SEEN
Fully degrease and lubricate the chain. A chain cleaning machine will drastically reduce the amount of time taken to do this, and a freshly lubed chain makes for a much smoother ride.
Grab a crank arm in each hand to make sure they are tight. If there is some play in the bottom bracket, it should be overhauled. If it’s very loose, it could be dangerous to ride. Macke sure the pedals spin freely but that you can’t pull them away from the cranks.
Check your lights. There’s nothing more important than being seen while you ride and improving your visibility can go a long way towards safety. Make sure that your wheels and pedals have reflectors and you wear reflective clothing. eep a bright white front light and a flashing L D rear light for when you’re caught out at dusk or for night riding.
TYRES
Check the tyres, looking for any cracks or cuts, then top up the air to the correct pressure. Under-inflated tyres will drastically increase the rolling resistance, increasing the amount of energy needed to pedal. If you’ve inflated them properly, they’ll also do a better job of absorbing impacts.
QUICK RELEASE
Open and close the quick-release levers on your wheels to ensure that they’re tight and secure.
BRAKES
Give the brake levers a strong squeeze to ensure that the brakes firmly grip the wheels or disc rotors. You shouldn’t have to pull the levers more than halfway to the handlebars. Give each wheel a spin to see that it doesn’t wobble and that the rim doesn’t contact the brake pads at any point.
SADDLE
Set your saddle to a height where you can just barely place your toes and the balls of your feet on the ground when you sit on the saddle. Another indication of proper position is if your leg is bent at a slight angle when your foot is on the pedal at its lowest position. If you can lock out your knee, the seat is too high. If your saddle is incorrectly set, you’ll lose e ciency as you pedal.
HANDLEBARS
Set your stem and handlebars so that they leave your back at a 30 to 45-degree angle. Even though you’ll be a little less aerodynamic at 45 degrees, the fact that the weight of your upper body will be distributed between your torso and your arms will make you ride much more comfortable.
BE PREPARED
Be prepared for the worst - Whether it’s a simple puncture, an accident, getting lost, a storm, or fatigue, keeping some essentials in your saddle bag will ensure you don’t get caught out. Take a mobile phone, identification, money, energy gels, a multi tool, puncture repair kit, CO2 inflator, a rain jacket and sunglasses. Little extras like disc rotor wipes, gloves or a GPS can also come in handy.

When would I use Bike Grease instead of Lithium Grease?
Our bike grease is specifically formulated with high pressure additives making it perfect for suspension forks. It is also compatible with our Grease Gun for a more controllable application. Lithium grease is better suited to parts such as bearings where application can be done sparingly by hand.
Why would I use a chain cleaning machine? Not only is it quicker and easier than using a traditional brush, it’s also much more effective. The citrus degreaser supplied cuts through oil, dirt and grit with ease, so you are more likely to clean the chain at regular intervals. Just remember to give the chain a quick spray with TF2 Ultimate after every wash to prevent corrosion.
How do I choose the right puncture repair kit? Our handy guide shows you exactly what you get in each kit. After that, it really is down to application. For instance, our narrow profile patches are perfect for road bikes with 23mm tyres, while our fat bike repair kit caters to 3”+ tubes. We have tubeless repair kits for use on either the inside or the outside of the tyre, with the latter allowing you to leave the tyre seated on the rim. Then there are kits with tools or without – If you already have the tools, then there’s no need to buy them a second time.

What are the advantages of puncture prevention measures?
Why would I replace my traditional pump with a CO2 inflator
There are a wide range of options available, all of which can save you a lot of headache. Tapes fit inside the tyre, creating a sturdy barrier between the tyre and the inner tube, meaning thorns and debris are less likely to penetrate the tube it’s self. Our puncture prevention sealants work with both inner tubes and tubeless applications, sealing a hole within seconds of it appearing, ensuring your can ride on uninterrupted. Finally, our Dr Sludge Inner tubes come pre-filled with solution so the next time you replace your tube you can enjoy puncture free riding for longer.
Roadside repairs can be a real pain. Whether you fix the puncture, or replace the entire tube, you will need to re-inflate the tyre before you can carry on with your ride. A traditional pump can take what seems like a lifetime to inflate a tyre to a reasonable PSI, while a Jetvalve CO2 inflator can have your tyre inflated in under 5 seconds. Not only that, but with our Smart Mount Systems, the inflator and spare cylinders take up next to no space on your frame making for a tidy and practical solution.
