THE ORIGINAL FAST & LIGHT MOUNTAIN CLOTHING - SINCE 1989

I am Valeria, I was born and raised in Bormio in the Alps; when I was a child I dreamed of designing clothes, but, unlike my friends, designing them for dolls was never a source of satisfaction for me. I was a young athlete, my favorite sport was alpine skiing, but such an expensive sport was not within my reach, so I turned to cross-country skiing. While practicing it, I learned the values that this sport transmits; dedication, sacrifice, determination. I also made lots of friends among the people I used to train with. I managed to win the Italian Junior Championships, one of my proudest accomplishments! After this win, I had to make a difficult choice. Should I continue achieving sporting successes as a skier, or should I follow my path as a sportswear designer? Well, if I’m here to tell you about it, it’s because I chose the latter. At 20 I opened my own boutique in the old town of Bormio. My first customers were my friends: elite athletes of any mountain sports, such as Deborah Compagnoni and Alberto Tomba, came to me with particular and customized needs. Among the athletes with whom I collaborated, two presented me a unique challenge. In those years the first races in the mountain were born: ski touring in winter and skyrunning in summer, but it didn’t exist any kind of clothing suitable for these new disciplines. These athletes were Fabio Meraldi and Adriano Greco, the true pioneers in the fast disciplines in mountain. Together with them I designed and created the technical solutions needed to run those extreme races. The first ski mountaineering and sky running suits were born in this way. Here is where the true turning point for Crazy came around!! Taking notes from the innovations born by the needs of the ski touring and skyrunning athletes I started creating new products for those that want to live the mountain every day. I focused on functionality and comfort: essential items, built and thought for a specific usage, items for everybody don’t exist.

Learning by the race world that I have known closely, I have removed what was superfluous, reduced to the essential the weight and the bulk of all of my products to allow my customers to live the mountain in an effective way with speed and lightness, a Fast&Light approach. Hours of designing, cutting fabrics, trying to imagine myself in the moment in which I could present my collections at International Fairs, or in a catalog that would be distributed all over the world, displayed in the most prestigious sporting goods stores... the dream of a girl became reality, I made it thanks to those who believed in me!

Story and Philosophy

I’M VALERIA AND THIS IS MY STORY, THE STORY OF FAST AND LIGHT.

When I was training or competing I lived the limits of the traditional mountain clothing on my own skin: I always suffered from the cold, the suits were inappropriate, uncomfortable, too loose or too tight, the humidity got into my bones and remained stuck on me until I could take a shower, it was a tragedy! I decided to totally change the standards, my goal was to create something functional, comfortable and, above all, to shift the attention towards style and beauty, something that no mountain company considered important, for no apparent reason. I began to use unprecedented prints and colors for the mountain world of that time. You must know that even today mountain clothing are black or gray, while creativity and style were reserved only for the world of fashion. But who said that mountain clothing should look sad? Specialization is needed, competence and clear choices are needed; only in this way, mountain and mountaineering enthusiasts will know what to wear specific for them. Be Crazy, be Fast & light, without compromises.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE 3 AGES Mountain clothing was born as a necessity for the first mountaineers of 1800s, to hike in the mountains without freezing. There were no technical fabrics or specific solutions, we are talking about everyday clothes which were adapted to deal with the Alps. They were woolen sweaters, heavy socks and knickerbockers. We are in the first age of mountain clothing: historical clothes. The issues and limitation of this kind of clothing of were enormous and very evident! Everything was stiff, cold, itchy and uncomfortable. Every movement was a struggle, it’s impressive what mountaineers of the time managed to achieve despite their clothing. Decades passed and thanks to the industrial innovations, in the second part of the 1900s some companies started to use the first technical fabrics, waterproof, breathable and softer, to design products specifically for the mountains. These technical fabrics were used to create versatile and warm garments. This is the second age: traditional mountain clothing. It has served us till today and it has always been the most wide-spread clothing ever which is typical for the absolute majority of brands we know in this field. Traditional mountain products didn’t seem to have major limits or problems but eventually everything changed. In early ’90s the first mountain competitions were born: ski mountaneering in winter and sky running in summer. The race world changed everything. The first athletes understood immediately that their needs were radically different from those of a hiking lover, or a professional alpinist.

FIRST AGE: HISTORICAL CLOTHING.

OF MOUNTAIN CLOTHES ARE?

They needed lighter, stretchier, more breathable, more comfortable and extremely specific items for every specific activity. Wide pants with lots of pockets just didn’t work, heavy jackets and wool sweaters even less. Their necessity was cristal clear, and if you’re familiar with Crazy’s history, you know that it starts right at this moment. In early ‘90s we invented the first skimo and skyrunning suit, when nothing of the kind ever existed. We then went on to create the first ski touring jacket and all the innovations that have defined the clothing for the competition world. What do the needs of a small group of elite athletes have in common with the mountain clothing evolution? Designing this kind of products, we understood that it was possible to learn from their needs to improve and to evolve the traditional clothing which was available in the market. Afer all, the same benefits the athletes were looking for, like comfort, breathability and lightness, could improve the experience of even the most casual mountain lover. That was the real turning point for Crazy. We created the first line of products for athletic people, bringing the benefits and features developed for athletes into less extreme garments. This is when elasticity and breathability items became a priority over versatility and mere warmth. We started researching fabrics that could retain great thermal properties without the bulk and stiffness of traditional ones, we re-imagined the build and construction of our models and we stole elements from outside our industry, experimenting and innovating year after year.

SECOND AGE: TRADITIONAL MOUNTAIN CLOTHING.

We created the first fast and light mountain pants thanks to cycling fabrics, we reduced the bulk of every item by implementing the first flat seems, we developed the first completely elastic jacket by exploring stretchy linings and paddings. Each product is designed for a specific activity, taking away everything unnecessary, reducing bulk, weight and anything could limit movement or compromise comfort. There was still something we wanted to change. Who the heck decided that mountain clothing needed to be grey, black and boring? I loved fashion and I brought colors, prints, designs, and style into all of my products. For many years I’ve been flowing alone against the flow, but in time a lot of companies decided to follow the path I traced. Bigger brands than Crazy got inspired to revolutionize the industry with me and helped bringing all of us into the third age of the mountain clothing: fast and light. Fast and Light represents a natural evolution of traditional clothing: more technical, more specific, more stylish :) Every young mountain brand is now focusing most of their efforts towards these kind of products. And as for my Crazy? We keep researching, experimenting and innovation every day, proud to have led the way and fullfill what has always been my obsession: creating the new generation of products for people who dream about the mountains every day, overcoming all the limitations I experienced as a young athlete and mountain lover. • The latest generation fabrics used for Fast & Light apparels allow them to maintain the same thermal characteristics, while drastically reducing the bulk and the weight. These fabrics are lightweight and breathable, thus allowing free movement.

• Before the advent of new technologies, the only way to make warm clothes was to use bulky and heavy fabrics. Even today, traditional companies use these types of fabrics that continue to give the impression of being warm

VOLUME • Minimizing bulk is a top priority. Through the use of athletic fit and elastic fabrics, we offer maximum comfort.

• Apparels made with old-fashioned fabrics are very voluminous, thus limiting movement and unnecessarily increasing bulk

TECHNICAL ATTRIBUTES • Each one of our products is designed with a specific destination in mind. For this reason, we only add the fundamental technical attributes for each specific activity, still in order to reduce weight and bulk

• Traditional apparels include as many technical attributes as possible (pockets, zips, hoods) in order to be potentially suitable for any type of activity and situation.

BODY MAPPING • Only one generic fabric is used for the whole apparel, without taking into account that different body parts have different needs

• After mapping and studying the needs of each body part, we use different fabrics for the same apparel in order to satisfy the need for warmth, elasticity and breathability of the different areas of the body.

FIT • Traditional apparels try to fit everyone

• We avoid compromises to guarantee to our clients that have an athletic fit the best possible solution

STYLE • Mountain clothing looks serious and is black or dull in color. The design hasn’t changed for decades.

CRAZY COLLECTION PHILOSOPHY Crazy is the brand that first invented the Fast & Light mountain clothing, for those who want to move in the mountains in an athletic way. Crazy has always followed a specific procedure, called COLLECTION PHILOSOPHY. Each garment is classified and has a specific use, different from all the others, so there will be no more overlaps. Just listen to the customer, understand his needs and find for him the perfect product.

All the garments of the mountain collection will be classified into 3 main categories according to their use. In addition, each product will belong to one of 4 subcategories according to the main feature of their construction. How much easier is it to sell if the collection is clearly designed and easy to remember? Crazy supports you, helps you and facilitates your job, but especially it gives you a fundamental assist to advise your customers.

Color Story

COLOR STORY The dilemma is always the same: continuity or innovation? There is not a real beginning to the creation of a colour story: it is a flow I go with, every day, all year round. One of the questions I have been asked the most is: Where do you get your inspiration for a colour story? The answer is as simple as it is complicated to make into something tangible. Transferring moments, emotions, details and elusive moments into one concept, drawing them down on paper and finding the right combinations is something that is innate in everyone. Sometimes, though, someone develops this natural gift further. A sunset, an ice cream, a piece of furniture, an F1 car, a fashion show: everything I see fires my imagination and sets ideas and thoughts into motion. When everything seems confused, muddled up and unmanageable, suddenly clear ideas start to come together, the colours lean onto the fabrics and become real. Many times, on the other hand, I am actively looking for ideas, I chase them. This is what happened with the colour story Aurora for the men’s collection. I wanted something different, not so much for its own sake, but to break with mental patterns that force us to remain within stereotypes. Fashion for me doesn’t mean transgression, but neither it should be a stereotype; mine is a logical path that - with each collection - brings me a small step forward. And I love to think that I am taking these steps together with each and every person who enters a store and chooses one of my products. …be Crazy!

64 FIRE The red colour, often in combination with black, is one of the most used in men’s mountain-clothing collections, by the majority of companies in the outdoor industry. It might therefore seem strange that Crazy is choosing to use this colour for the new SS23 collection: everyone knows that we are always up to colour choices that are different from those proposed by other brands. The explanation lies in the combinations we play with. The tone of red I have chosen is powerful, strong and exuberant, with details in neon orange; on some garments I have instead given a prominent position to solid white: a bold choice for the colour story of a men’s collection. Once again, our choices are uncompromising, different from what we are used to seeing on store shelves.

93 LIKEN I feel the need to go away for at least a couple of hours. I close the door behind me and go up, farther up, until I reach the highlands. The spring colours peep out strong, pushing away the last bits of snow; granites are covered with mosses and lichens that boldly shake off the grey of the winter. Like on the palette of an artist, our valleys finally wrap up in the colours of the summer. I capture them on film, they are my inspiration. The colours of lichens are iridescent; they change within the same stone or piece of wood - a tone for the side facing south and another for the side in the shade: green, white and even orange, almost the tone of rust. I know what I have to do: transfer them onto the most technical fabrics!

120 AURORA Daring is what I do, and Crazy’s friends expect no less of me. If you are tired of boring and ‘samey’ colours too, now you are looking at the perfect colour story to upset the ‘status quo’. Avio (Air force) and vento (wind) blues are associated to aurora pink, inspired by the colours of the dawn in the mountains. Aurora is a very special tone of pink and is used in colour combinations by other fashionable sports too - such as F1, cycling and tennis - sports that are at the forefront of colour schemes and style. Mountain sports cannot be left behind.

124 EARLY Early is a unique colour, strong and bold. This hue - something I really wanted this way - has been difficult to achieve because the green tint I was looking for has a strong blue component - a tone that really drove me crazy! But the result I got is exactly what I was aiming at. The combinations I propose for this colour involve white and avio (air force) blue, indifferently used for garment details as much as for large coloured areas. Early is another of those colour favourites of ours which is definitely out of the ordinary.

125 ORIENTE This colour has been inspired by the plans I was doing in 2020 for my travel to Petra in Jordan and to the Sinai mountains. I had done my groundwork, planned and arranged everything for the trip, but - just a few weeks after - international travel restrictions were brought into force, affecting all of us. Now is the time to take back control of our lives, go back to our dreams and to the best plans for the future. Petra and the mountains in the Middle East inspired me to create this colour story, a palette where the hue of the rocks at sunset is counterpointed by the vento (wind) blue, like the sky still illuminated by the sun before the night falls.

A combination that is a real boost of strength and exuberance. 63 POP Did you know that the pink colour has only been used in association with all things femenine since the post-war period? Before then, colours were used to make age groups recognizable and not to identify a gender. A pink bow was used to distinguish the girls from the boys in the novel “Little Women”, but it was not a common way to do it yet. I like this association; I love pink in all its shades and I am sure that Crazy’s friends love it too, since Pop - a colour which is all about pink- has always been one of our most popular. For this colour story I combined it with black, white and turquoise; the titanium dyed seams add character too.

94 VENTO If you are looking for a delicate visual impact, relaxing and reassuring, our Vento (wind) is the colour for you. Combined with a lot of white and Bubble-coloured seams, it induces serenity - with a touch of class. I decided to add a hue of Blossom, the colour of cherry trees in bloom, to break with the chromatic continuity. This colour story is, once again, completely different from ‘what is usual’ in outdoor clothing: we are Crazy and we stand for all Crazy women.

Most of the drawings I use for our collection are exclusive because they are made by me, but I love doing research and when I find proposals from other artists, many of them emerging young people representing my vision and my thought, I contact them and adapt their work to my models. Adapting graphics created for other worlds and not directly for fashion, or even less for the mountain world, to clothing is a long and complicated work, but the result is incredibly different from what other brands in the outdoor world offer. Even in this project I put all of myself to make my products nut merely technical but also exclusive and fashion, nothing is obvious, nothing must be boring.

Frida Kahlo, more than 60 years after her death, remains an everlasting iconic figure, the symbol of women’s resilience and vitality. Hers was a life marred by painful events, something that only managed to make her stronger, as she was able to transform the scars of a woman’s life into the symbol of resistance and resilience. Polio, spontaneous abortions, months of accidents and braces have never weakened her fortitude, curiosity and the ability to speak her mind without reserve. Despite such a sorry and painful fate, she is considered one of the greatest artists of 1900.

GARY GODEL

Hülya was born in Istanbul in 1972 and is an illustrator and painter of watercolor portraits. Although she focuses mainly on female portraits, she doesn’t impose any restrictions on her drawings. What guides her, is the understanding that a woman is a person who still struggles to exist in a society dominated by men, imprisoned in a role based on the maintenance of the norms of society. In her works we see women become increasingly self-confident, re-establishing their human identity, while the artist enriches the exposure of these inner worlds with patterns.

Gary Godel is a UK based illustrator who enjoys reviving the vintage style travel posters of yesteryear with a chic retro-modern twist. As an eager skier, his love of the slopes and mountains can easily be found in most of his designs - but always with a bold and colourful aesthetic that makes you yearn for that jetset lifestyle of the past.

Helen Dardik is a professional illustrator, a pattern designer and a painter. She defines her own style as vibrant, playful and informal. She was born in Odessa, by the Black Sea, but she studied in Israel and then she moved to Canada, even if she says that she mostly lives and works inside her head. Since she was a child, she has shown a strong sense of initiative joined with her artistic vein. When she was sixteen she entered in a shop showing a doll created by her claiming that she was able to produce other ones: she was hired. She takes inspiration from every item that can be obser - ved: she keeps updated on what happens in the illustration world and she reads magazines related with this world. In any case, she feels that the major insights come from the huge imagination involved in the drawings of her children

Paul Delaney is a Designer and Illustrator from Ireland. His illustration work combines his love of character, story, colour, words and whimsy. Paul creates work that is sweet, fun and good natured with healthy sprinklings of humour and graphic anarchy.

DIETER BRAUN Dieter Braun has been illustrating for magazines and newspapers like The New York Times, GEO Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, WWF Magazine and German weekly Die Zeit. In 2000 he published his first children’s book: “Animals of The World” and then the “Mountains of the World”– the book has been translated into 11 languages. Animals are his biggest passion. With his wife he shares his Hamburg-based home with two dwarf rams called Iggy and Nukka.

Since the early 2000s I have tried to find an alternative to underarm zips. I was looking for a minimalist solution, simple, comfortable yet reliable. I thought about an autonomous ventilation system, something that is activated, like an involuntary muscle, with the wearer’s own movements. I wondered if there was anything in nature that has already solved the problem. And I found inspiration in the gills of the shark. I designed a ventilation system based on inverted openings. The air flows into the openings while the water slides over them, unable to enter. In order to make this happen, I placed the openings in a strategic pattern, so they widen with the natural movements of the arms. By using this technology - which is as simple as it is effective - garments are simultaneously breathable and waterproof. Pertex® QUANTUM is a textile made of incredibly fine yarns tightly woven into a fabric that is lightweight and soft to the touch. Its windproof technology helps retain the heat on the inside while also offering protection from wind chill. With light water-repellency, this fabric is ideal to construct garments that are lightweight and easy to pack down.

Dermizax™ is a fabric with a highly sophisticated and technical membrane that achieves the highest level of waterproofness, breathability and resistance to condensation. It’s the original Japanese waterproof and breathable fabric technology from Toray, who use their decades of experience to manage every part of the construction process. The fabric is stretchable, adaptable and flexible. This makes it ideal for sporting activities that take place in extreme environmental conditions, such as mountaineering, trail running and winter sports.

A record-setting, remarkably light nylon woven fabric - so fine you’ll not even feel it by touch built with a mechanical stretch ripstop structure. Thanks to the use of a special 7-denier yarn - to a final weight of only 21g/sqm - this fabric makes it possible to construct the most lightweight garments on the market: working on these strengths, some of Crazy’s Fast & Light garments are the lightest out there. The hand is soft and nice to the touch. It is slightly windproof, while the water-repellent finish provides additional moisture protection. 202

Soft shell with a windproof and water-repellent membrane. The outside-facing surface is very resistant to tears and abrasion, despite the very soft and pleasant hand: an array of properties - added to the high elasticity of the fabric that is well suited for very comfortable garments. With a waterproof measure of 10,000/mm HH and a breathability level of 5,000/mm, this fabric is ideal for garments that, although suitable for outdoor use, have to be lightweight and easy to pack down.

EASY CARE

Polartec® Alpha® was originally developed for the U.S. Special Forces, when they requested a superior insulation material for their combat uniforms, in particular for use in difficult weather conditions. This material is the result of a technology that implements active insulation, i.e. the ability to regulate breathability and body temperature during different energy-output activities. This efficacy in adaptable breathability and thermal performance significantly reduces the need to shed or add layers of clothing while on the move.

The most technologically advanced fabric of the Revolutional™ family is made with NOVAREL®, a micro-encapsulated fibre, rich in active principles such as caffeine, Vitamin E, retinol, fatty acids and aloe vera. The combined action of these active principles, together with the regular use of the garments made from Revolutional™Slim - for at least 8 hours a day, for 8 weeks, helps reduce the dimpled look of the skin often caused by cellulite and enhances the silhouette. A new generation of Stretch fabric with innovative 2-blend technology, for unparalleled elasticity and enhanced strength. The Elastan component provides the garment with an excellent shape retention capability and with a level of elasticity that is ideal for technical applications requiring great comfort.

This fabric uses a dyed Natural Indigo Blue yarn. At each wash the garment will fade a little bit, acquiring a worn look, more and more every time. This is not to be considered a problem: it is a really sought-after effect.

Since the SS21, we have introduced hemp as the signature material for our lifestyle collection. This choice has been made by considering the low environmental impact that hemp has compared to cotton: the plant in fact requires much less irrigation and fewer fertilizers. It is also highly appreciated for the high breathability and comfort feel it delivers, together with the fact that is antibacterial and odour-resistant. We turned to a supplier who is fully committed to the mission of sustainability. In fact, the company we collaborate with has implemented numerous measures to limit its impact on the environment: for example, it constantly monitors the waste of energy and water. Given the proximity of their plants to the growing fields and production laboratories, the company is able to have an effective control over all the steps of the hemp production chain, from the harvesting of the plant, to the manufacturing of the fibres, up to the spinning and dyeing of the fabrics. This physical proximity allows them to have a direct control on the quality of the products and on the compliance with social and environmental standards, also certified by independent, external laboratories. This company is at the forefront of the production of fabrics that follow the latest technological developments in the industry.
