Up close, it is obvious what a work of art it is.

A down cluster looks like a delicate ice crystal with its countless fine fibres. Like a microscopic tree with soft branches that separate into smaller branches.

“It has a unique construction that keeps air in place and insulates really well – no other material insulates as well as down does,” says Shufei Wang, buyer and product developer at Fjällräven.

“Down is also highly compressible, which makes it an even better choice to have in jackets and sleeping bags. No matter how much you compress your jacket by squeezing it into a small packbag, it will return to the same lofty forever warm

shape as it had before and insulate just as well.

It takes up almost no space in your pack and is incredibly light.”

In its natural state, the purpose of down is to keep a bird’s body warm. Feathers are there to keep water and dirt out. When down gets wet, however, it loses its natural insulation ability.

This explains why we believe that synthetic padding also has a role to play, for example over the shoulders, which are particularly exposed – and sometimes even in an entire collection if garments are designed for activities where exposure to water is unavoidable.

Keeping warmth in needs more than just

good padding in a jacket or sleeping bag. The methods used to keep down in place are at least as important.

“Sewing channels with sewn-through seams is the easiest and fastest way. But even if this keeps down in place, the cold can get in through the seams. Cold spots develop between the down channels,” says Shufei.

For this reason there are other construction methods used in products designed for the extreme cold. In Keb Expedition Jacket, for example, two layers of down channels with sewn-through seams are used. The layers are then placed on top of each other so that the channels of one

layer cover the seams of the other. This means that cold spots are eliminated, and the down’s unique insulation properties are maximised.

There is also a construction method that uses an extra panel of fabric to create box channels, so seams do not have to be sewn through the entire garment.

However, the work that goes into making reliable and warm products starts a lot earlier in the process than when the sewing machine comes out. It starts with the geese, and our down suppliers in China. The birds we use are geese that are raised for food production – the down is a by-product.

In China, Fjällräven works with one large farm, a group of smaller farms, one slaughterhouse and one down supplier. The down supplier collects, washes and sorts the down. In this process, it is extremely important to keep down from Fjällräven’s carefully controlled farms separate from all other down.

“We visit annually and go through the whole chain of production with our partners. We also have an inspector in China who is on site when the down is delivered to the suppliers, making sure that the sacks for Fjällräven are sealed as they should be. There has to be a clear separation the whole way through,” says Christiane Dolva Törnberg, Head of Sustainability at Fjällräven.

The strict controls and separation of down are part of the Down Promise that Fjällräven formulated in 2009, after an alarm that birds were being live-plucked for down production. With help from veterinarian Johan Beck-Friis, who was involved in the development of Sweden’s law of prevention of cruelty to animals, policies were established that led to demands being placed on suppliers to guarantee they practiced ethical animal handling. At the same time, routines were put into place for how controls should be made.

Already the following year, Fjällräven received an honourable mention from Animal Welfare Sweden for their down handling practices, and today, this work continues with annual controls and continuous work to prioritise animal protection.

Last year, Christiane and Johan were back for another visit, giving suggestions on how to improve transportation of the birds. Together with the large farm, they developed a method to herd the geese up a ramp, and then separate them once in the truck. This minimises the stress birds experience during transport. This method couldn’t be applied to the smaller farms, so instead a new type of boxes became the solution.

“This is something we take very seriously, and we plan to continue with it. We have routines, and we follow up on them continuously. The down we use is 100% traceable and produced in ethical conditions. We don’t want anything to do with down that does not fit this criteria,” explains Christiane.

Synthetics – a winner in rain and shine Choosing the right insulation material in warm garments is a science.

Of course you have to consider weather conditions, but you also have to consider activity types and levels. For those who move a lot, synthetic padding is a winner. wor ds:k a r in wa l l én pho t os:fr edr ik l e wa nder & da niel bl om

Even if down has unique insulation properties in extremely cold weather, it is not always the best choice for insulating warm jackets. In wet weather conditions that are also cold, and for high-intensity activities where you work up a sweat, synthetic padding is often the better choice.

“Even when compared to down, synthetic padding has a good insulation ability. But what

is really good about synthetic padding is that it transports moisture away from the body. Even when it gets wet, it keeps warmth in. And it dries fast,” says Daniel Holmgren, senior product developer at Fjällräven.

In products made with synthetic insulation, two different materials are used. G-Loft Supreme has been developed exclusively for Fjällräven

by insulation experts Goldeck Textil in Austria. The material is lofty and resilient and consists of a blend of hollow and super fine polyester fibres, 10% of which are made from recycled polyester. The other material used is Supreme Microloft, which is 50% recycled polyester. Supreme Microloft is Fjällräven’s own product that is made from a combination of fine and even finer microfibers that can handle getting wet without losing much insulation ability.

The greatest advantage with synthetic fibres is that they can handle getting wet better than down. Another advantage is that the material is manufactured as a fabric, which makes it easier to sew into the product.

Down requires more complicated constructions to keep it in place. This helps make synthetic insulation cheaper, and in conditions that aren’t extremely cold and dry it’s a better choice than down.

But it is nature that gives us our inspiration when developing artificial materials. Down is a clear role model.

“The microfibers in the synthetic material create millions of air pockets between them. The fibres create clusters, just like down does,” says Daniel.

The result is a fluffy material with air pockets that keep warmth in place, but unlike down, these air pockets stay in the exact same place between the fibres no matter how much you compress them. It can handle being washed and keep its shape, regardless of how it is treated.

But what about weight?

“Synthetic insulation is a little heavier than down.

But the difference is miniscule. It’s still very light.”

Fjällräven uses a synthetic insulation that is as soft and down-like as possible, and the garments are easy to compress so they take up minimal space in your pack. But when we start to discuss minimal pack volumes when compressed, down is the clear winner.

There are several factors that must be taken into account when you are choosing between down or synthetic insulation. The most important is to think about what activities the gear will be used for, and what weather conditions you are most likely to be out in.

“It is easy to think that if you are going somewhere cold, you need down. But if you are going to be working up a sweat once you are there, synthetic is the better choice. Synthetic ventilates and wicks away moisture. If you are going to be digging a snow cave in a down jacket, you will start to sweat after a while. And once you are wet, you’ll start to get cold,” says Daniel.

He reminds us about applying the principle of layering. And that conditions should dictate which layers are used.

“If I’m heading up to the top of a mountain in the winter, I will probably wear a thinner synthetically insulated jacket under a shell jacket, and then take a down jacket in my pack that I can pull on if it gets really cold. There are very few jackets that are perfect in all situations.”

A better way to waterproof Ten years ago, sustainable shell garments were not much more than a utopian idea. Few people wanted to hear warning signals regarding fluorocarbons. That we who love outdoor life have to change our habits to protect nature is a thought that has taken root. If we want to preserve our ecosystem we can’t be involved in spreading toxins and harming wildlife and our environment. In particular fluorocarbons, the chemicals often used in the impregnation of all-weather gear, have been the subject of heated discussion in recent years.

But let us go back to 2010 when there was not much talk about the dangers of these substances.

Sure – there were suspicions that were discussed in research labs and among a small group of environmentalists – but the outdoor industry didn’t really want to hear the warning signals.

Material suppliers clung to their solutions.

But at Fjällräven, people weren’t happy with the situation. Their design department had an idea that for the time was almost utopian – they wanted to develop waterproof shell garments: garments that would be produced sustainably, without using any harmful chemicals and so they could be recycled.

“It was becoming clear that fluorocarbons could have harmful effects on our health and the environment and we realised that we would have to develop an entirely new way to impregnate fabrics, both for when the garments were

manufactured and later when they would need to be re-impregnated. We discussed the issue endlessly with a number of suppliers,” remembers Johan Skullman, Product Expert at Fjällräven.

“One contributing factor to us wanting to have our own material was so we would have greater freedom of choice. The big manufacturers have restrictions on how their materials can be used.

Lappland Eco-Shell Poncho, for example, would never have been made if we weren’t able to use our own material in our own way.”

The rain poncho is another story. But the journey to sustainable shell garments reached its first milestone in 2011 when Fjällräven launched the Eco-Trail Jacket after several years of development work and close collaboration with new suppliers. The response was amazing.

“It won several prizes and was a hot topic in both the industry press and among users. It was so positive, and it became clear that there was a demand for this kind of thing,” says Henrik Andersson, Head of Innovation and Design at Fjällräven.

“But there was no rest – as Eco-Trail Jacket became available in stores, development work continued at Fjällräven. That might seem strange, but we never stop striving to find new, even better solutions – that’s how we work here. We set off

We took the step to make changes early on in the ­process because it morally felt like the right thing to do.

again, this time with even higher goals.

“We wanted to improve everything – performance, functionality, fit and feel. We wanted to make a whole range of garments and we wanted the next generation of Eco-Shell to be more ‘Fjällrävenish’, which is something that we didn’t really manage with the first jacket. The goal was to create the most functional waterproof hardshells ever made without compromising on sustainability,” says Henrik.

Focus was put on the Keb series of technical trekking garments that needed to be complemented with a waterproof shell.

“We let the development work take the time it needed – we tested materials, made several prototypes, adjusted details and carried out indepth field tests in various environments, using an extra large test team. We tweaked countless forever dry

details and made a lot of adjustments before we were satisfied,” says Henrik and continues: “One goal was for the jackets to naturally match G-1000 trousers. They should be multifaceted – of course when worn in the mountains but with a feel, design and colour range that also worked in everyday life.”

The basis for this second generation of Eco-Shell was an entirely new development – a membrane laminate with even better functional properties.

At the same time, it was soft and pliant thanks to its slightly stretchy weave.

Keb Eco-Shell was launched in the fall of 2015 with an anorak, jackets and trousers. They are lightweight, simple shell garments with articulated cuts and carefully selected features.

“Keb Eco-Shell was developed with an idea of simplicity. Nothing is unnecessary, every detail

is there for a reason and this is true for the hoods, pockets and ventilation. The bib trousers, for example, have openings for knee pads, which are practical when you need to kneel a lot at base camp,” says Johan.

This launch also received a lot of positive attention. The Keb Eco-Shell series was introduced just as the debate about fluorocarbons reached its peak.

“It wasn’t exactly news that these substances were harmful, but legislation had been lagging behind. We took the step to make changes early on in the process because it morally felt like the right thing to do – if there was a risk then we didn’t want to wait for things to be regulated.

But for more companies to understand the problem and start to phase out their use of harmful substances, there had to be more discussion. So

it was great for the environment that the debate took off. And we already had a good product to offer once the issue became widely discussed,” says Henrik.

Since then, Fjällräven has increased their range of waterproof products further with wet-weather gear for all possible activities and adventures in the outdoors. Övik Re-Wool Sweater Fjällräven’s Jämtlandsfår sheep graze outdoors all year round.

It started with an idea to go back to when really good wool was produced. Now a number of Sweden’s newest breed of sheep, Jämtlandsfår, are creating high quality sweaters in Fjällräven’s name from their home base on Brattlandsgården Farm. at Brattlandsgården Farm in the Åre Valley, northern Sweden, the bleating of sheep can be heard coming from the fields at the foot of the mountains. This is where Fjällräven’s Jämtlandsfår sheep spend their time all year round, moving from field to field on a regular basis so their grazing grounds can recover quickly. Thanks to this natural cycle, the vegetation builds a stronger root system, the soil binds carbon dioxide better, and as cereal crops are not grown for feed, the need for machinery and fossil fuels is reduced.

this kind of wool production, which brings returns year after year, instead of slaughtering sheep just for meat. That wool is thrown away by the tonne each year here in Sweden is one of the reasons behind the project that Fjällräven and Brattlandsgården Farm started together.

The aim is to lay a foundation for the sustainable and high-quality production of woollen garments in Sweden. Because why wouldn’t you want that?

When compared to any synthetic material available today, wool’s properties are almost magic.

“Wool is an unbelievably brilliant material just functionally. It is pretty

much the only material that warms in cold weather and that still warms when it gets wet, and then it also cools you down when you are hot,” says Christiane Dolva Törnberg, Head of Sustainability at Fjällräven.

She shows me a creamy white ­woollen sweater whose yarn was spun at Ullforum in Jämtland, and then knitted by family-­owned company Ivanhoe of Sweden in Borås. ”This is an example of the results we got from Brattlandsgården Farm last year. A total of 120 unique sweaters in a collection that was named Brattland Sweater No. 1. We decided not to colour

or treat the wool. The sweaters have a wonderful feel but can’t be machine washed,” says Christiane.

Many other woollen yarns are superwash treated nowadays, which means they can be machine washed without shrinking. But as the superwash treatment coats the fibres, it also destroys a number of wool’s natural properties.

The advantages of wool are so numerous it is a challenge to list them all. It has

sheep that give excellent returns in the meat industry, but now they wanted to add some characteristics. The goal was to have clean, top quality wool. So the other half of the breed is Merino. The idea was to breed sheep with fine-fibred wool that can be worn against the skin comfortably, at the same time as the sheep have good meat.

“In general, the more meat a sheep has, the courser their wool fibres are. And the

“It is a material that is very energy efficient in this way. You don’t need to wash it with water and chemicals and this means a lot less wear on the fibres as well. When out on longer treks it is fantastic to be able to use a sweater again and again without it getting really smelly,” says Christiane.

Lena Persson of Ullforum in Jämtland agrees. She adds that if you do wear a woollen garment against the skin for a long period, you might experience that salt from your sweat can make it feel a little stiff. This is a good time to give it a thorough rinse in clean water.

“But the only time you need to wash it is if you have spilt coffee on it, for example, or managed to put your elbow in a slice of blueberry pie. And even then, you only need to spot clean it. If you don’t have any special wool soap, use shampoo. It has the same Ph levels as wool – hair is hair,” says Lena.

That synthetic material often comes from some form of fossil source or drops microplastics when washed just makes the benefits of wool shine all the brighter.

But for wool to be of the best quality and for the impact on the environment from its production to be minimised, there are several factors that need to be taken into account.

When working on developing the guidelines for Fjällräven’s wool, the sheep at Brattlandsgården Farm play a vital role. Lena from Ullforum was involved in the creation of the new breed, which is half Sveafår. Sveafår sheep are a cross between the Texelfår breed, which are bred for meat as they easily convert grass into muscle, and the Finullfår breed, which have high fertility rates. These are wool

less meat they have, the finer the wool.

We wanted fine-­fibred wool, but still a good amount of meat. This means we can make use of everything the animal has to offer." says Lena.

At Ullforum, you can find Sweden’s only instrument that can measure wool fibres to the thousandth of a millimetre.

When the wool fibres reach 28-30 micron, they are thick enough not to fold when they touch another surface, which is what makes them itch. If the fibres are finer than this, they fold easily and won’t irritate the skin.

“Jämtlandsfår sheep have wool that is between 17 and 23 micron on average.

So it won’t itch and it is also shinier than Merino wool. Which is perfect for fantastic sweaters,” says Lena.

But it is not only amazing sweaters that are a result of the project at Brattlandsgården Farm. We are also building up a bank of knowledge by following all the steps in the wool process, which is of great value to Fjällräven’s suppliers, as they can then place better demand specifications for what they buy from abroad.

Importing wool from other countries is going to be an unavoidable necessity for the foreseeable future. But at the same time, Christiane hopes that the example of Brattlandsgården Farm’s environmentally friendly and ethically justifiable animal handling can encourage other farms to do the same, both in and outside Sweden.

“There is now an international standard for responsible wool production.

We use this as our point of departure, but we want to do even more together with our veterinarian Johan Beck-Friis.

It is important that animals from our suppliers abroad have a good life in all its stages, from grazing to shearing and transport. There are also ideas behind how

farmers should look after their grazing lands. Globally, there are enormous sheep farms that are really hard on large amounts of land. The goal is clear: imported wool should be traceable to a much larger extent, so we can guarantee good animal handling practices and the use of environmentally friendly methods.

Already today, Fjällräven can guarantee that no wool used in their products comes from sheep that have been exposed to mulesing – a method used to skin the rear of the animal so it can’t be flyblown.”

But there are other ways of raising sheep that Christiane and Fjällräven want to see their suppliers implementing.

The problem is that the chain of supply is a long one, and that wool is often sold at auction.

“You can end up buying wool from a really large number of sources. Breaking this system and saying we want to know exactly where the wool is coming from is quite difficult. But we succeeded when we started buying wool for our base-layer collection, which we make together with Aclima. We then managed to buy only wool that we could trace back to the farm of origin.

In Fjällräven’s production, recycled wool is also used, which is bought in Italy.

“We buy wool that is production spill.

It is sorted according to colour, then shredded into individual fibres, and then spun into yarn. The colours in the recycled yarn are always going to be a little blended or melange. We are now launching a number of shirts made from recycled wool.

Our greatest challenge today is the segment of wool that isn’t traceable yet.

But Christiane has clear goals.

“We still have wool production that isn’t fully traceable, but we are working on solutions for this, step by step. In the future, the wool we use will be either Swedish, recycled or traceable. That is our goal.”

And our Jämtlandfår sheep – yes they will continue to graze happily in their meadow in the beautiful Åre valley, at the same time as they produce both high-quality wool and hope for the future. Lena Persson is happy with the project that was Fjällräven’s initiative.

“It is such a good project. Someone is focusing on our Swedish sheep and doing so sustainably as well. It is exactly what we want to focus on too. We want people to invest in a sweater they will have for years and years, and not just consume endlessly without giving it a second thought.”

But outdoor expert Johan Skullman makes sure that Fjällräven Polar is an educational experience for all the participants. Barren mountain tops and magical auroras, eager sled dogs and snow-covered expanses.

Fjällräven Polar is a 300-km long adventure and a lifetime dream for many. However, it is nothing like a comfortable holiday where dogs and guides do all the work. But neither is it a survival experience with frostbite and exhaustion as part of the package.

Under the guidance of outdoor expert and previous career army officer Johan Skullman, participants create routines for how to spend time in an Arctic winter landscape, with showing respect for nature being a key part of the experience. This is where conditions and inspiration for a continued life in the outdoors are created.

“If there is anything I have learnt over the years I’ve spent with Polar, it is that nothing is impossible. People come here from different backgrounds, different cultures and with completely

different experiences. But every day that passes sees them gaining in confidence and starting to work together more and more as a team. It is truly a fascinating, educational journey.

Everyone starts with a whole day in Stockholm, where the 26 participants from a dozen or so different countries gather for their first taste of what is to come. Theory on frostbite and the principle of layering, among other things, is interwoven with workshops that teach participants how to use their equipment. Right from the beginning, routines are introduced – the order in which things should be done, why it is important to keep your energy reserves up, how to approach things in difficult weather. But one thing is fundamental on sled-dog expeditions.

“We always take care of the dogs first. Not until you have taken care of them, fed them and seen that they have water and anything else they

How to keep warm and dry 1

Eat and drink regularly. It might sound unrelated but a major part of being comfortable is feeling warm and dry. And if your energy tanks are full, you react better when you start feeling too cold or hot.

Don’t wear too many clothes when you are active. A common mistake is to dress too warmly from the start and then get sweaty after a while. It is better to be a tiny bit cold before the journey starts and let the body warm up.

Pull on extra layers when you stop for a pause. But think smartly. Get into your windsack at each break instead of sitting out in the wind and swirling snow and getting cold and risking getting your warm layers wet.

Be particularly careful to keep your sleeping bag away from moisture and dampness, both inside and outside the tent as well as in your pack.

Don’t wear too many layers in your sleeping bag. You need room for air in there as well – it is that layer of air that keeps you warm.

This is where conditions and ­inspiration for a continued life in the outdoors is created.

On the first night, theory and training is put to the test in the field.

It is time to pitch tents, cook food on an outdoor stove and make a comfortable bed to sleep in. Tasks follow on from each other, everything is still new and unfamiliar, and when the next morning’s dawn breaks it is time to melt snow for cooking, fill thermoses, go through the morning routines – to then pack the sleds for the next stage - in to Signaldalen Valley.

“Then we have a session on how to pack the sled so it is weighted correctly. There are six friends who are going to pull it for you,” says Johan.

Task after task is added as the adventure starts. Even if they have talked about everything beforehand, it isn’t until the time comes that the participants get a real feel of what it’s like being out in the snow, and how important it is to use the equipment and skills they have been learning about.

When it’s time to take a break, they should use wind sacks. Already here, it is obvious that these routines are in place to prevent injury and the risk of making bad decisions.

“If you put on a warm jacket but can’t be bothered with the wind sack, there is a risk that your jacket will get wet, and right there you have already limited your chances for having a good evening. You will have to spend time trying to dry your clothes when you get into base-camp, instead of letting them keep you dry and warm.”

A typical beginner’s mistake is to dress too warmly from the start, start sweating and then get cold from having damp base layers. You will also have lost precious hydration.

Johan Skullman and the sledding guides are always around keeping an eye on participants and making sure they eat and drink properly.

It is easy to underappreciate the effect a long day in a cold climate can have on the body. And those who haven’t filled up their energy reserves are going to make worse decisions, perhaps fall off their sleds, lose their concentration and their sense of humour.

After a couple days, the basic routines are starting to become

just that – routines. It’s then time to start with some more detailed tricks that make outdoor life a little easier in the winter.

“Advice on how to get more comfortable in a sleeping bag is easier to accept after a night or two in a tent. Everyone can then refer back to different things – they have maybe felt a little cold around the feet or knees. This is when it is best to see what they are doing and give them a few tips. Maybe they have a tendency to put their faces all the way into the bag and breathe in there so it gets damp from the condensation of their breath.”

Johan is careful to point out that Polar is not some kind of test for those who have already checked off all their dreams or want to show off or flex their adventure muscles. It is designed to be a way in to winter outdoor life for people who want to learn more about nature in general, and specifically in the winter. It’s a way to inspire people to go on more adventures – big and small ones, close to home and far away.

“At the finish, many participants might experience that the adventure is over. But we don’t think like that!

As soon as they come in we have to talk them through how to take care of their equipment. And in the long run, we see the whole journey as an inspiration for the future and the sharing of knowledge that these people will in turn pass on to others,” says Johan.

“I have to say that the days we spend out there touch me emotionally as well. Watching the participants sitting around weeping on the last day in Väkkärä when they have to say goodbye to their beloved dogs and each other, and hand their equipment back, is really touching.

It makes me believe in what we are doing.”

Why Become A Mountain Guide?

Six guys are gazing intently at a topographic map. They’re all a little windswept and sun-kissed from a day high up in the Swiss Alps surrounding Davos. They look just like any other group of outdoorsy 30-somethings. But what distinguishes these six men from others their age is their commitment to their passion. Their dream of turning what they love into their day job. They are all IFMGA-certified mountain guides in the making. words:sarah benton photos:fredrik schenholm

Learning to become a guide is not a decision that should be taken lightly. The training is demanding.

The prerequisites for getting in are extensive and the cost of the education dents even the healthiest of bank balances. But for some, the allure of spending all their time in the outdoors, where they feel happiest and most free, is just too great.

“I’ve no idea what to expect from this course or how I’m going to feel once I’m qualified. But I do know that I’m happiest when I’m in the mountains.”

This is Olov Isaksson, a 36-yearold assistant professor at Stockholm University. Olov is the eldest in the group and he’s been thinking about becoming a mountain guide for the

past 15 years. “I don’t think I was ready before. I was too focused on pushing my own limits. But now I think it’ll be fun to share my love for nature and the outdoors with others.”

Marcus Palm, a 33-year-old Swede now living in La Grave, France, seconds this. “I’m really looking forward to being able to share my passion with others.”

Although each of them comes from a different part of Sweden, has a different background, different strengths and weaknesses, they were all in agreement about why they wanted to become mountain guides.

But of course there’s a little bit of selfishness in there too. We all have our own personal goals in life. A job doesn’t just have to be a means-to-an-end. “I’m looking forward to the freedom that comes with being a qualified guide,” says 29-year-old Carl Granlund, who’s working as a climbing guide in Norway’s stunning Lofoten islands. “I love northern Norway, but with mountain guiding I’ll be able to travel and go on expeditions all over the world. And I’ll be able to push myself in a way I can’t right now.”

The training itself is a big draw. When I met the guys at the start of February they were in Davos for their first course – a collaboration between the Swiss Institute for Snow and ­Avalanche Research (SLF) and Manuel Genswein, a well-known expert in the field of avalanche rescue and transceiver training.

The trainees were learning how to act when normal avalanche rescue protocols don’t work.

The course was demanding and the trainees were really put through their paces. But this is just one course of many on the trail to becoming a fully-qualified mountain guide.

There are 22 meet ups and exams over a three-year period. The trainees get to ski, climb and learn guiding skills in some of Europe’s best natural playgrounds. And they’ll be sharing all this fun with like-minded people, each equally well endowed with outdoor adventure skills.

“I’m really excited about learning lots of new things and getting to hang out with these guys,” says David Nyberg, a Swede working as an outdoor activity teacher in Finland, who turned 30 during the training week in Davos.

Becoming a mountain guide is not ’all play no work’ however. The course is incredibly demanding. Right from the start the guides are in the spotlight. Their actions and decisions are under the keen eye of Mikael Amlert, the President of the Swedish Mountain Guide Association. But although Mikael is stern with the trainees, he doesn’t doubt their abilities.

“There are at least 90 days of avalanche-­ related training built into the programme.

These days are spread over several different courses with exams in seven modules, as well as throughout the apprenticeship period. Here in Davos, they go through the fundamental knowledge and techniques. Still there is no doubt their first course is already on a high level. Before being accepted to attend the programme all the candidates went through a process of showing a vast list of their experience in avalanche terrain and were later selected after a test in Chamonix in May 2016,” says Mikael.

It will set these men off on a new course, filled with new adventures. It’ll open new doors, but also close a few old ones. This seems to be something they’re all acutely aware of, however. They have commitments, families and other interests. They’re not all going to pursue guiding in the same way, or even full time.

For 34-year-old Robert Lönell, however, who loves the mountains in winter so much he moved to Engelberg in Switzerland, guiding will become his full-time job. “I can’t wait to get started. To use all I’ve trained for, for so many years; to enjoy life outdoors with other people is amazing. I will definitely be working full time as a mountain guide in the Alps, otherwise why would I be here doing this course?”

But for Carl, Olov and Marcus guiding will be shared with other work. “I think it’s good to have variation and regular change. It helps give you perspective on life,” says Carl.

For 34-year-old David Lindgren deciding to be a fully-qualified Swedish Mountain Guide was just a natural progression. Already working as an outdoor leader and adventure guide in Åre, Sweden, this is what he sees as the best – and most obvious – step forward.

“I already work as an outdoor guide in Sweden but it’s not the same level as what we’re pursuing with this. This education is a way to progress and get the ’stamp of approval’ to show I’m qualified at what I do. But at the same time, I don’t know what else I would do.

I love being out in nature and I love teaching people. There is nothing better than getting to tailor an outdoor experience to a person’s dreams and goals.”

With an attitude like this, we think Carl, Olov, Marcus, Robert and the two Davids will do just fine during this three-year education. Their journey to becoming professional mountain guides has just begun and we’ll be tracking their progress for the next few years. We hope you’ll follow along on the journey. Their next course will be in northern Norway learning guiding techniques for rock climbing and rescue.

Imagined that you might want to spend a little more time above the tree line, in a Fjällräven way,” says senior designer Thomas Håkansson.

Bergtagen in Swedish folklore means to be led away into the mountains by dangerous spirits, never to return. But today’s meaning is to allow yourself to spend more time in the mountains by increasing the margins of error up there.

Far away from roads, where the law of nature rules.

Thomas also points out that even if the garments are designed to be as multifaceted as possible, they are made with a lot of respect for the task and with technical solutions that are specific for the collection.

One specific detail is that all seams are taped so the insides of the garments are free from protruding seams. This leaves them smooth so there is nothing that can catch on layers underneath, which gives extremely well-sitting garments that follow body movements smoothly and feel really flexible and light. The technique is expensive and technically difficult to achieve.

“The detail solutions focus on the requirements of alpinism. Material and design, the placement and shape of the pockets – everything is done from a mountaineering perspective,” says Thomas.

Ventilation openings on the outer garments can be used to easily reach pockets on layers underneath. It should be easy to use zippers with your gloves on, and jacket hoods have extra room for helmets. The fit is accommodating, designed for taking long strides and climbing. Reinforcements are where they need to be, for example where trousers take extra punishment from crampons. And a completely new material has been developed to protect against wear and tear in places it is needed most.

“It is a new reinforcement material we have called corylon. A polyamide blended with Kevlar that has a pliant, matt and comfortable surface. It is softer than other materials used for reinforcements,” says Thomas.

Bergtagen is based on tried-and-tested methods and the body’s psychological functions, combined with modern readymade clothing technology. It is all about keeping warm and dry in both active and passive situations in the mountains, when the weather often determines the rules of the game. And achieving this in a way that impacts on nature as little as possible.

For Johan, the development of this collection has been both an interesting journey

with new technology and materials being put to the test, and a journey back in time – to the truths that we have almost forgotten in today’s trend-obsessed world.

“Reinforcement jackets were getting shorter and shorter but this is a really long one that will keep you warm over your rear too. We have shallow blood flow in the groin area which can lead to loss of body heat if you don’t have a jacket that is long enough to cover this area. Once you start to get cold, the brain can close off the body’s peripherals and centralise blood flow so your hands and feet get cold instead.

Bergtagen Insulation Parka can be used when you are standing still, belaying your climbing partner, for example, or when you take a break in cold weather or are taking part in passive activities at base camp. Even if it can be compressed and packed into its hood, it’s not designed for fast trips with light packs. When seen as part of a bigger picture, it has a whole list

his earlier career as a test leader in the Swedish Armed Forces, he was part of the team who developed wool terry. Aclima manufactured it already back then, but only for special orders for professional use.

This is the first time it has become available as part of a product that anyone can buy.

The base layer garments are made up of different types of woollen fabrics on different sections – the design has been totally adapted to the body’s physiology and the demands of the environment.

Some parts of the garment will get damp easily, others need to be able to withstand more wear.

“Some parts of the body need more ventilation than others. This has been our point of departure. It will never be an exact science as we are all built differently, but it is always possible to link our designs to this kind of physiological explanation,” says Johan.

The wool blend gives a dry feel, resists bad odours despite getting sweaty, and slides easily under other layers. All the sections are made from traceable merino wool from farms that take the wellbeing of their sheep seriously.

The whole Bergtagen collection has been tested in different environments, both snow and snow-free.

The clothing has been used on summit trips with skis, when trekking and also on general climbing trips. Common to all these situations has been the mountains, and the garments have been tested on both simple outings in regular ski areas and by experienced mountain guides who spend their daily lives above the tree line.

“Bergtagen is a collection of functional and reliable clothing that is also sustainable.

Everything comes with a declaration. It is easy to say that impregnation must be used to keep water and snow out, but it has taken a little time to find the right solution when earlier products used in the industry were quite simply harmful to our health and the environment. That is not the way we want to go,” says Johan, who is looking forward to his continued work with Bergtagen. The collection will continue to be developed, with newcomers regularly added that will fit in with the system. The mountains are calling and the journey goes on.

Fjällr även is now launching a new collection for high-level alpinism, which we see as nothing less than a natural development of what founder Åke Nordin started long ago. With his background as a climber and alpinist, he saw the need to create materials and equipment that would be able to handle hard wear in the mountains and stand up to blizzards and worse, without hindering freedom of movement and the enjoyment of being outdoors. His first garment that bore the Fjällräven name was – a climbing jacket.

“Mountain expeditions are a large part of Fjällräven’s history and our tents have been used a lot on expeditions. Today, we are continuing along in this vein with a well-thought-out clothing system that has a whole range of technical solutions.

But none of this has come at a cost to our long-term thinking. We will always be true to what we believe in and the environments we want to spend time in,” says Fjällräven’s outdoor expert Johan Skullman, one of the initiators behind Bergtagen.

“A lot of what’s out there today is very lightweight and designed for fast ascents and even faster descents. We have looked at things a little differently.

“The Mummyfoot belay bag keeps the heat in better than a pair of insulated trousers. You can open it at the bottom so you can stand there in your boots belaying a friend. And when you close it up, you have the lower part of a sleeping bag system,” says Johan Skullman.

Bergtagen Mummyfoot is padded up to the waist, and by wearing Bergtagen Insulation Parka over it, the two garments together can be used as a sleeping bag.

“This is one way of keeping weight and pack volume to a minimum in your backpack. And if you need to go out in the middle of the night, you can keep the top part on.”

As part of the Bergtagen collection, a new base layer has made its entry, in cooperation with Norwegian company Aclima. Both long johns and short johns have been included, and two different tops – one in wool mesh and one in wool terry with a hood.

For Johan, working with wool terry was like seeing an old friend again. In

Mountain guide Stefan Palm lives close to Chamonix but guides several months each year in Abisko. In the middle of May, his 19-year-old daughter Robina came to visit and the two of them had a magic day on skis together.

After a ten-month trip away, when Stefan first spent the winter in Chamonix and then went straight to Nepal to climb, his mother presented him with a stack of papers on his arrival home. They were application forms to a guiding and tourism programme in Kiruna, northern Sweden. It was the only course of its kind in the country and as close to a straight guiding programme as you could get back then.

“It became my new future. Without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It was what got the ball rolling for me to eventually become a mountain guide.”

Via the legendary “Sporten” in Riksgränsen, he got to guide everything from alpine ski groups to bergtagen

heliskiing tours. Stefan, together with Anders, was part of the first group of Swedes who started to train towards becoming internationally certified mountain guides. They graduated in 1994 and started working, spending their first three years in Sweden.

In 1997, Svenska Bergsguideorganisationen (SBO, the Swedish Mountain Guide Association) became part of the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations and the first five Swedish guides received their prized mountain guide badges.

Twenty years later, Stefan is an experienced mountain guide who works all over the world and guides his guests in exotic places such as Hokkaido in Japan, the Chilean Andes, India, the European Alps, northern Norway and of course Swedish Lapland. Each winter is finished off

with a couple months north of the Arctic circle, with Abisko as his base.

“Most people talk about the Arctic light, but for me it is the terrain and the snow that are unique up here, and how they are so different from year to year. The amazing feeling of wilderness is also really special. There is nothing but mountains and open expanses for 350 km south of the E10 highway that connects Kiruna and Narvik. There are literally hundreds of peaks and endless open expanses, and this is something that our clients truly appreciate.”

In Abisko, Stefan works with mountain guide colleague and life-long friend Dick Johansson who runs Abisko Mountain Lodge. They have known each other since the late 1980s and have worked together for many years. Two years ago, they started working together again when Stefan

took over the skiing at Abisko Mountain Lodge.

“The snow is white here too, but Stefan finds the best terrain and he has an amazing ability to see lines and find the best snow. His routines and knowledge of these mountain are totally unique,” says Dick.

In recent years, ski touring has become more and more popular. Almost the entire ski industry is focusing on this niche and ski touring is becoming really popular among guests. This is something that Stefan has really noticed.

“The market is pushing hard for touring so it has become broader – more open to all skiers rather than just the most experienced ones like it was before. Many people have realised that you can’t ski untouched snow from the lifts anymore,” says Stefan.

“When we head off ski touring to some exotic

place, we have the best experience; you have to contribute a whole lot yourself, train for it beforehand, and work hard once you’re there – the rewards are extra valuable when you have to fight a little for them.”

Stefan lives with his wife Pia and children Robina, 19, and Max, 14, in the little village of Servoz at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, just below Chamonix. Before this, they lived in Serre Chevalier for ten years, and La Grave for ten years.

“The Chamonix valley is fantastic, but I don’t guide very much there. Once you’ve had the chance to travel all around Chile, India, Japan, Kamchatka and Swedish Lapland with all the amazing experiences of being alone with your guests in those mountains without seeing another human, it is hard to get a queue

number for the Aiguille du Midi cable car and manage the stress of working up there with all the risks it involves.”

Of course, mountain guiding is a high-risk job, but it is all about calculated risks according to Stefan.

“I am naturally much more careful now than when I was a teenage ski bum in Chamonix only skiing the steeps. I have no need to show anyone that I can ski something extreme and I have never felt that need. My profession is all about working with people, getting them out of their comfort zone and giving them a great experience in the mountains so they, too, become ‘bergtagen’ – swept away by the magic of the mountains.”

Face to Face With Nature Arctic foxes are elusive little creatures. But one Swedish mountain station is offering visitors a unique chance to meet them up close.

A fluff y grey face appears at the entrance to the den. As the face warily protrudes further, it’s followed by two pointy ears, completing the heart-shaped head of an arctic fox cub. After a few quick glances left and right, the fox gingerly pads out to have a look around. It knows it’s being watched.

Others soon join and they get started with the business of the day: playing. They aren’t disconcerted by the presence of eight humans sitting 300m away, with telescopes poised on their every move. In fact, the foxes’ playful rolling around and fighting might well be for their benefit.

This experience takes place just a couple of kilometres from Helags mountain station. Every summer, from July to the middle of September, experienced guides take visitors out on tours to see arctic foxes in their natural habitat.

During the summer, when days steal time for night, the lush green moorland is full of wildflowers and smooth, rounded peaks provide a dramatic backdrop.

Helags, a 1,797m mountain with an almost vertical cliff face on one side, is the most prominent point on the landscape. The mountain station at its foot is far from roads and villages and the area around it has become a stable home for Sweden’s endangered arctic foxes.

“You’re not guaranteed to see arctic foxes, but in reality people see them on almost every tour. They aren’t really afraid of people. In fact they seem to be quite curious. They are wary and want to keep an eye on us of course, but they aren’t scared.”

Malin Larm is doing her PhD at Stockholm University under professor Anders Angerbjörn and is part of the Swedish arctic fox project, which Fjällräven

supports. Her focus is on the relationship between tourism and arctic foxes. But she also used to work at Helags as an arctic fox tour guide. So her position is rather unique. She’s seen first hand the effect these tours have on people too.

“The people get really excited. It’s amazing for them to see. It’s such a privilege working as a guide, exposing people to this experience.”

But with two tours per week for a couple of months a year, surely this must be having some kind of negative affect on the arctic foxes. “Humans do affect the foxes’ activity,” says Malin. “But so far we’ve not seen anything negative. The foxes become more active on the days when the visitors are there. They also don’t hunt on tour days, preferring to play around. But we think they compensate for being more active at the den during the day by going hunting at night.”

Malin studies this special relationship between human visitors and arctic foxes, but she’s also interested in the broader picture. When we visit nature we have some kind of impact, but does this need to be negative? Can we in fact get something out of it and can the landscape even benefit from our presence?

“Right now research broadly shows that experiences in nature, such as this, foster an environmentally friendly attitude in people. But we don’t know the extent of this effect. The empirical evidence lags behind the visions of what we believe to be true. So the aim with my research is to show what kind of effects being out in nature has on people and the impacts such experiences have on their views towards nature and wildlife. Preserving nature for nature’s sake is difficult to justify. But if we can prove there is some human benefit as well, then this kind of tourism could have huge potential.”

When Greenland Jacket was first released in the 1960s, it was a revolution: Lightweight, weather resistant, fast drying and packed with plenty of practical features.

We see these characteristics as givens in outdoor clothing today, but this wasn’t the case 50 years ago.

It all began in 1966 with a Greenland expedition that Fjällräven equipped with tents and backpacks. The expedition was a success; the Scandinavian alpinists did a number of first ascents in the demanding landscape.

Once home again, they were filled with praise for the Fjällräven equipment but were less impressed with the outdoor clothing of the time.

The climbers’ reflections inspired Fjällräven’s Åke Nordin, who quickly started experimenting with designs and made a climbing jacket on his mother’s

Singer sewing machine. He found the fabric he used in his workshop – a piece of leftover tent material that he coated with a mixture of beeswax and paraffin to make it more water resistant.

Fjällräven’s first jacket was launched in 1968 and named after the expedition. It soon became popular among climbers who appreciated its hood, pockets and durable, weather-resistant material. The fabric was named G-1000 and has been a key part of many functional and hardwearing garments made by Fjällräven ever since.

Today, Greenland Jacket is a classic that has been loved by generations. And now it’s been joined by an entire series of trousers, shirts, backpacks and bags – all in G-1000 that, to this day, still holds the position of one of the world’s best outdoor fabrics.

It all started with a vision of straight backs and room for two A4 files. Fjällräven’s founder Åke Nordin had seen how school children were having back problems from using shoulder bags with just one strap. He decided to create a backpack that would be durable, lightweight and perfect for packing school books in, so kids could then carry them to school with straight backs. In 1978 it was ready. Backs were straightened and a timeless product was born. Almost 40 years later it was these straight lines and the simple design that led to Kånken getting classified as applied art by Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design).

“It feels so positive that it has been recognised – something that tens of thousands, who knows, maybe even hundreds of thousands, of children have taken with them on their first day of school. Kånken became a part of a lot of people’s childhoods.

Today, it is more popular than ever, despite it still looking exactly the same as it did 40 years ago,” says Svante Björkroth, distributer and product developer at Fjällräven.

To be recognised as applied art, an item has to have an artistically inde@http.chillout pendent and original design within its genre. The design has to be unique and distinctive. In its explanation, Svensk Form’s committee stated that Kånken is “clear personalised in its design and has a distinctive identity.” And that it has “such a degree of originality that it exists as its own intellectual creation.”

And indeed, it has several details that make its design stand out for its simplicity.

“Look at how the shoulder straps are formed on a Kånken, for example. It has a four metre long strap that crosses behind the back so the shoulder straps and handles are all made from the same length of webbing. It’s a unique construction,” says Svante.

Fjällräven Archives The basic idea that it should have room for two A4 files led to the shape of the pack being rectangular, rather than rounded as many other backpacks are. The rest of the design

is so simple it’s nothing short of genius: A square pocket with a red and white logo that is almost like a stamp. Even if you only catch a glimpse of it out of the corner of your eye you know exactly what you have seen.

“In the outdoor industry, it is quite common for designers to cram as many details and features into each product as possible. But Kånken is just the opposite. And its straight lines contribute to there being almost no spill in the production process.”

The durable fabric used is Vinylon F, which has been specially produced for Kånken. It is a really hardwearing fabric that ages well, it gets a patina, or shine, when worn and takes on a beautiful aged character that also contributes to its low environmental impact.

“We want people to buy good products and use them for a long time, rather than buy something and then throw it away once they have tired of it. Another reason for Kånken getting this award is that it has lasted so long with minimal changes in its design. And this is probably what people like about it. People recognise it,” says Svante.

Its new status as a piece of art means that Kånken is now protected by the Copyright Act. But that a little backpack can be a piece of art has been demonstrated by many users around the world already on Instagram, where different hashtags are filled with creative pictures and paintings of the little rectangular backpack from Sweden.

“I think that Kånken is here to stay, especially among young people. It sends a signal of steadiness in a word obsessed with trends. Sure, its popularity has accelerated in recent years and many people probably see it as an accessory. But we will never look at Kånken as a trend. It is Kånken. It has been here for 40 years and it will be here for at least 40 more.”

When the spring trekking collection for warmer climates was developed, the creative team spent some time in Spain testing new materials and products. Spain has a dry climate with areas of sparse vegetation and rocky outcrops that went right into their hearts and gave inspiration for new colours.

She claims that all we have to do is stop and take a little time to see what we have around us. It can be a flaming blue aurora, a mossy green forest or a sprig of dusky pink heather in bloom. Or a hardy dark violet flower, stubbornly defying the brutal climate of Abisko in the far north.

t grows far up in the northern mountains. With a straight stem and a dark violet flower that reaches towards the light Arctic sky in June and July, Bartsia Alpina, or Svarthö as it’s called in Swedish, is a true survivor.

“I saw it when I was trekking up in Abisko and was fascinated by its hardiness, and its beautiful hue. It is a flower with a lot of charisma,” says Elísabet Elfa Arnarsdóttir, designer at Fjällräven.

She decided, together with the others in the design team, to call its colour “Alpine Purple” – a nuance that has now been included in the autumn and winter apparel in the

women’s outdoor and trekking collections.

This is just one example of nature’s involvement when Fjällräven’s designers look for new colour inspiration, both when it comes to dull and strong hues.

“When you think of Fjällräven, chances are you think of more earthy tones. Our products need to last for a long time and feel like they are classics a decade later. At the same time, we want to have more colours to choose between. But we do it in our own way.

They have to be able to harmonise with the colours we already have. Getting inspiration from nature doesn’t mean we can’t use strong colours in combination with earthy colours,”

claims Elísabet. “Just the opposite.”

She grew up in Iceland and has taken her homeland with her as a natural source of inspiration.

“The force of nature is very tangible in Iceland. We often say that nature is frighteningly beautiful, like a reminder for us to be humble and have respect for its power.”

She picks up a photo from ­Landmannalaugar, up in the Icelandic highlands, to show me how nature can sometimes surprise us with its choice of colour combinations. The minerals have clear nuances of red and green and even vibrant turquoise, in contrast with the matt earthy surroundings. What might

sound like impossible colour combinations can actually be quite harmonious when it’s nature that chooses them.

“Colours can have different meanings in different circumstances. Nature can sometimes use colours to attract or repel other organisms in the eco system. We have a number of strong colours that speak to people who want to stand out, and then we have more earthy tones for those who would rather blend in with their surroundings,” says Elísabet.

She names the Sierra Nevada in Spain as another example of how impressions from nature have influenced her choices of colour.

The common thread in our materials is always green Hardwearing, functional materials are at the core of most of what we do here at Fjällräven.

They are what keep you warm when it’s cold, dry when it’s wet – or cool when the sun is beating down relentlessly. They are what hold your week’s belongings together on a trek and what protect you from the elements when you sleep.

Water resistant Greenland Wax makes g-1000 garments very resistant to rain and moisture. This means that you can wear them during brief rain showers. If the fabric gets wet, it will dry fast.

Many Fjällräven garments are made from our own outdoor fabric G-1000. And this is no coincidence.

The tightly woven material made from polyester and cotton is extremely durable, at the same time as it offers protection from the weather and wind. But G-1000 also releases a lot of the moisture that builds up when you are active.

Put simply, you don’t get as sweaty.

You can even wear G-1000 in light rain; the waxed fabric resists water and if it does get wet, it dries fast.

If you want to enhance its water resistant properties, wax the garment with Greenland Wax, our own impregnation that is kind to both people and the environment. If you’d rather have a more airy garment with maximum ventilation, just wash the wax out.

Windproof The dense weave makes g-1000 almost totally windproof. Once impregnated with Greenland Wax it offers complete protection against biting winds.

Breathable One of g-1000’s most impressive qualities is its excellent ventilation – it efficiently releases moisture from the body which is particularly practical when partaking in strenuous activities.

Mosquito safe The tight weave keeps mosquitoes and other flying insects away from your skin – practical both in the mountains and the forest, or when travelling in hot climates.

(Note that G-1000 Lite and G-1000 Air are not mosquito safe.)

UV protection The fabric provides almost 100% protection against the sun’s ultraviolet rays (uva and uvb) helping to greatly reduce the risk of sunburn.

g-1000

Adapt your G-1000 ­g arment with Greenland Wax g-1000 fabric can be adapted with Greenland Wax to suit different weather conditions and activities.

Adding more wax increases the fabric’s water and wind resistance as well as the durability and lifetime of the garment.

In warmer conditions, the wax can be easily washed out for cooler, more breathable clothing.

1. Rub in

Take the block of Greenland Wax and rub it with long strokes against the fabric, leaving behind a thin, even layer. Make sure you cover all of the fabric well.

2. Melt Melt the wax into the fabric with an iron on low/moderate heat with no steam (remember to wipe off the iron before you use it on other garments). You can also use a hairdryer. The wax melts at approximately 55-60°C (131-140°F).

Repeat several times to add several layers of wax to surfaces that need extra impregnation, such as the shoulders, hood, knees, rear and other exposed areas.

G-1000 comes in five versions, all with the advantages of the original fabric but each with its own specific properties. They are also all available in an Eco version made from recycled polyester and organic cotton.

Fjällräven has chosen to only use fluorocarbon-free impregnation on all products. And there is a good reason for this.

These powerful chemicals have been used for a long time to give rain gear and other textiles a water- and dirt-repelling surface. But they have other properties that are damaging for people, animals and the environment.

Fluorocarbons don’t break down in nature; instead they are spread by and stored in living organisms. They can affect reproduction and hormone production in mammals and are suspected to be carcinogenic.

They can travel long distances in air and water, and have been found in remote wilderness areas.

The choice is simple: no fluorocarbons.

Footnote: Fluorocarbons is a term sometimes used to describe PFCs; perfluororinated compounds.

Re-impregnating fluorocarbon-free Impregnation is important for the overall ­f unctionality of your Eco-Shell garment. With a drier outer fabric, the hydrophilic membrane works optimally and the moisture that is transported away can evaporate effectively.

When water no longer beads on the outer fabric it is time to renew the garment’s impregnation.

We recommend you use a fluorocarbon-free spray impregnation, such as PFC-free Waterproofing Impregnation.

You can find it in the same store where you bought your Fjällräven Eco-Shell product.

Åke Nordin starts Fjällräven in a basement in Örnsköldsvik.

His revolutionary aluminium backpack frame makes the wilderness a little bit more accessible.

1964 Termo Tent

The first condensation-free tent is introduced.

1965 First Golden Fox

Per-Åke Sjöman is named G ­ olden Fox, a title that has ever since honoured people who have made significant contributions to the development of outdoor life.

1966 Greenland Expedition

A group of Scandinavian alpinists and researchers travel to Greenland to study glaciers.

Fjällräven’s tents and backpacks are used and lauded by members of the expedition.

1970 Greenland Trousers

Fjällräven’s first trousers quickly become a favourite among outdoor enthusiasts, both for excursions in the mountains and for everyday outdoor activities.

1973 HAP

In 1965, Fjällräven’s Arctic sleeping bag was already being used on expeditions on a regular basis. The introduction of the next generation hap (High Alpine Polar) model means that the sleeping bag can be used in many more environments.

1974 Safari Jacket

Fjällräven’s first jacket is developed in cooperation with members of the Greenland expedition. The jacket is made from a durable fabric that is too heavy for Fjällräven’s lightweight tents but, when impregnated with beeswax and paraffin, proves to have excellent functional properties. The fabric is called g-1000 and the impregnation Greenland Wax.

1,300 of Sweden’s most experienced business executives select Åke Nordin as one of their leading role models in Sweden. The award is handed out by the Founders Alliance at Stockholm City Hall.

2011 Luhkka

The Luhkka is developed in collaboration with Sami reindeer herder Nils-Anders Blind.

Conscious hunting is the key concept for a new hunting collection with sustainable materials and high technical performance.

2016 New Tent Collection

Åke Nordin decides to never be cold again. His solution consists of two jackets that are sewn together. The overlapping construction prevents heat loss and keeps out cold winds.

Fjällräven’s Canada Shirt quickly becomes a symbol for durable outdoor shirts. The thick fabric and generous cut retains heat and the shirt becomes a favourite in many outdoor wardrobes.

Sweden’s first extreme marathon, f.e.m., takes place in the mountains with 70, 50 and 30 kilometre versions held over two days.

1994 Save the Arctic Fox

A project with researcher Anders Angerbjörn is initiated to save the endangered Scandinavian arctic fox. The Save the Arctic Fox project is still active today.

The pak 5 is launched, a complete set for mountain trekking that weighs less than five kilos.

1997 Fjällräven Polar

The first Fjällräven Polar takes place – a dogsled competition north of the Arctic Circle where the participants consist of “regular people”. The objectives are to show that the wilderness is enjoyable even in a harsh winter climate and to draw attention to climate change in the Arctic region.

1999 Vidda

Fjällräven introduces its most popular outdoor trousers in durable g-1000. With their reinforced knees and rear, adjustable leg endings and eight practical pockets, Vidda quickly becomes a favourite among experienced mountain trekkers.

2010 Akka is awarded

The Akka tent range is reintroduced and Fjällräven receives recognition for its development. One of the awards received is for “Best Outdoor ­Product”, which is given to the Akka Dome tent by Swedish outdoor magazine, Utemagasinet.

2010 Keb Trousers

The Keb Trousers made from g-1000 and stretch are released and immediately win the Outdoor Industry Award for “Best ­O utdoor Trousers”. The judging panel praises the trousers’ durability, functionality and environmental friendliness.

Fjällräven Polar starts up again in a new format. The participants still travel with dog sleds, but instead of competing with each other the focus is placed on sharing knowledge of outdoor life and inspiring more people to take part in outdoor activities in the winter.

Fjällräven’s support in conserving the Arctic Fox population is intensified when Fjällräven starts financing a full-time research position at Stockholm University’s Department of Zoology.

A total of 17 new tents in three series are launched after in-depth development work is carried out. New materials, an innovative dual-fabric construction and further improved features give tents that are exceptional both on the scales and in the wilderness.

2016 Kånken becomes art

Distinct, low-key design and a high level of functionality – and now also an artistic work. The Swedish Society of Crafts and Design classifies Kånken as applied art and awards it with the same copyright protection as music, film and literature.
