Shows cambered and rockered regions of the ski and where the ski contacts the snow. On a rockered ski the new contact point is measured in reference to the traditional contact point.

Every ski in the 2011/12 K2 collection combines tried and true construction with a host of innovative features designed to maximize performance in any snow condition. Features like BASELINE® profiles have redefined how we look at ski construction. Yet many of the successful components responsible for the lively and playful feel of a K2 remain at the ‘core’ of every ski we make.

We use a variety of woods in our cores to achieve the energy, rebound, and life you come to expect from a K2 ski. Fir and aspen, both solid and dense woods, are known for their inherent strength and durability. Paulownia is an ecofriendly, fast-growing renewable wood that is incredibly strong and lightweight. A softer wood, bamboo is recognized for being forgiving and lightweight.

Triaxial braiding consists of braiding fiberglass around a wood core to provide torsional rigidity for added control. Developed in 1988 by K2 engineers, the patented triaxial braid interlocks strands of fiberglass around a milled wood core. Triaxially braided skis are incredibly energetic and responsive, while maintaining a level of ease in both expert and entry level skis.

Built with two sheets of lightweight Titanal running the length of the ski, metal-laminate skis are the highest performing and most complex construction available from K2. Built from the base up, a metal laminate construction consists of alternating layers of fiberglass and Titanal above and below the wood core. Metal-laminates provide dampened, accurate, unshakable performance ideal for expert-level skiers.

Durable and lightweight “cap” skis are built by a sophisticated molding process that envelopes the core and internal materials with the top layer of the ski. Used throughout our ski line, cap constructions can be assembled with a variety of different cores. These variations, such as glass and/or metal materials, are the determining factors of the skis’ performance.

Unlike cap construction, the contents of a sidewall-constructed ski are sealed and protected by vertical material on the edges of the ski. Extra sidewall material is placed directly above the edge of the ski for additional strength and support. Due to the vertical nature of the construction process, sidewall construction provides extremely high transmission of power and pop.

Progressive sidecut is a combination of two different radii, or sidecuts, that enhance the versatility of wider-waist skis. Standard sidecut theory is based on using a single radius. This works well on narrower skis, but becomes overpowering on wider skis, especially in variable conditions. The use of progressive sidecut on wider-waist skis guarantees improved turn initiation and hard-snow performance.

All of our women’s skis use a combination of aspen, paulownia, and bamboo in a unique core known as BioFlex, a process where a dense aspen core underfoot is fused with lightweight paulownia at the tip and tail to reduce swing-weight. With the Alliance’s involvement, K2 developed this technology specifically for women: lightweight and easy to maneuver, yet sturdy and high-performance.

K2 women’s metal laminate skis are built with a thinner strip of titanal than men’s skis. Proportional to lighter weight women skiers, the thinner layer offers overall weight reduction while still providing expert-level skiers the benefits of performance and damping, consistent with metal laminate construction.

Forward Shifted Sidecuts Our women’s skis are built with the sidecut shifted two centimeters forward relative to that of a men’s ski. This accommodates the anatomical fact that the center of mass for a woman is generally much lower than that of a man. Shifting the sidecut forward places the skiers center of mass in an optimum position over the ski for more control and easier turn initiation.

Ski is targeted for specific ability levels and terrain found at any resort, we have a global test and development team of 5 skiers from all parts of the globe. Each member brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from coaching, teaching and racing backgrounds to ensure we have the most versatile line of resort-focused skis.

It utilizes a new Compact Toe and a fixed Compact2 Heel design to generate more power, precision and quickness underfoot in a 20% lighter design. The Marker/K2 M3 system’s sleek design is graphically integrated into the look of the A.M.P.Series skis.

Integrated Hub Technology Titanal hubs are imbedded into the core of the ski for the most direct transmission of power. The system hubs are functionally wider with a 50mm footprint, which decreases the distance between the binding and the edge of the ski for added performance. M3 Plate New for 2011/12 is a completely redesigned M3 plate that is lower, lighter and wider for a more effective transfer of power from the boot to the ski for better control and confidence.

MOD Technology High-Performance Suspension System MOD functions by absorbing vibrations and impact loads along the entire ski, providing stronger edge-hold and a higher degree of power and control. MOD is a secondary core that flexes and moves on top of the primary core, allowing the overall ski flex to be unaffected.

Carbon Web Enveloping the MOD structure with a carbon weave where the strands of carbon are laid at precise angles for an additional level of torsional rigidity on the secondary core. This keeps the ski light but gives you the additional torsional strength where you need it most. Marker/K2 ERS System High-Performance Women’s-Specific System The lightweight Marker/K2 ERS (Energy Response System) is used exclusively on the Super Model skis. The integrated hubs are closer together from toe to heel to accommodate a smaller boot sole and maintain smooth flexing of the ski. The women’s-specific binding features a Triple-Pivot Comfort Toe and Twin Cam 2 Heel. The Marker/K2 ERS system is a full pound lighter than the previous binding system.

Taper: Moderately wider tip than tail maximizes the ski’s performance in the forward direction. This means the ski makes a slightly different arc when skiing switch.

BI-DIRECTIONAL

TAPER: The tip is still wider but closer in width to the tail. This lets the ski perform exceptionally well while skiing in the forward direction, but the taper enables the skier to have similar switch arcs for better and more consistent switch riding.

Symmetrical Taper: A symmetrical ski has a tip width that is identical to it’s tail width. This gives equivilent arcs forward and switch. To maximize performance, the mounting location is in the absolute center of the ski.

Factory Team 37 This Twin Tip specific construction increases the durability of sidewall skis. A traditional sidewall construction produces a 90 degree angle where the top material and sidewall meet. The Twin Tech construction actually rolls the top material into the sidewall reducing the angle that is prone to abuse. Factory Team skis use thick, durable 3.5mm steel edges. They are far more resistant to cracking for a more durable, longer lasting ski. This horizontal sidewall construction sandwiches a urethane layer in between ABS for shock ABSorption, lessening the impact of harsh landings to the rider. Urethane is used under foot to maximize the dampening but ABS is used toward the tip and tail to maximize performance and edge control. Featured on the new Recoil and the MissDemeanor.

K2 tip and tail rivet plates were developed for durability but have now been modified to allow the additional option of a pre-cut climbing skin onto the ski. Though no longer the biggest gal in the neighborhood, the GotBack is clearly the most versatile. Rescue Shovel / Rescue Shovel Plus you’ll probably use your shovel most for digging snow pits, building tent platforms or even digging out your car. And most shovels will do an adequate job for these tasks. Unfortunately, because avalanche debris sets up so hard, a frighteningly large number of shovels fail when called upon for their most critical function of excavating a buried friend. This is why our shovels are designed for durability and utility. The K2 Rescue Shovel can also construct an emergency sled, build a dead man anchor, or provide a flat platform for your stove.

Shorter or flexible probes are adequate for collecting snow-pit data and identifying crevasses, and we hope that’s the only time you ever need your probe. But it’s the things you don’t expect from poles that make K2 LockJaw poles uniquely valuable. They provide important information about terrain and snowpack to help you assess avalanche hazard. The inclinometer provides insight about the most critical component of terrain: steepness. And by using the Snow Depth Ruler to measure ski or boot penetration, you can gain clues about the density of the surface snow and how much is available for wind transport. Probing with the handle can also reveal information about the depth, thickness and hardness of various layers. All this data helps you assess whether or not it is safe to ski a particular slope.

new for this year, the Carbon/carbon adjustable pole is a lightweight, high-performance pole that features a bubble vial inclinometer to gauge slope angle, a snow depth ruler to measure various layers in the snowpack, and back-up probe. The LockJaw clamp has bomber hold and is easily adjusted with gloves on or off.

This pole blends carbon and aluminum, and has all the same features of the Carbon/carbon model. it utilizes the patent pending LockJaw clamp that allows on-the-fly adjustments with or without gloves, and also sports the snow depth ruler to probe snow layers, back-up probe capability, and the new bubble vial inclinometer to determine slope angle.

Like the name suggests, the 3-Piece features a periscoping 3-piece shaft (16mm/14mm/12mm) made from durable and stiff 7075 Aluminum. The LockJaw clamp is adjustable from 95-135cm and features a Bubble inclinometer and Snow depth meter. The Ergo sewn strap system keeps you comfortable and the powder baskets are easy to remove and pack thanks to a new thread system.

The Alu/Alu model boasts the largest adjustment range of all our two-piece poles and utilizes lightweight, stiff 7075 alloy for a bomber backcountry pole. The patent-pending LockJaw adjustment system allows for quick adjustments while you are making your way through the backcountry.
