A GUIDE TO THE FRAMEBUILDERS
404 ACCelerAted evOlutIOn
Most transformations are so slow that you barely notice they’re
happening. Not so with the all-new Zipp 404. For 2009, we’ve taken a 1250g wheelset that’s already won races from the velodrome to Alpe d’Huez and improved almost every aspect of performance.
The latest edition features a fully toroidal 58mm rim profile with
the third generation of our patented ABLC dimples, saving
9 seconds over its predecessor’s 40km split. The larger axles, improved seals, and higher flanges of the all-new 88/188 hubs increase strength, stiffness, and durability without adding a gram to the wheelset.
Reinventing the 404 wasn’t easy. But instant progress never is.

You hold in your hand a guide to the finest collection of bicycle framebuilders assembled anywhere in the world. These are the framebuilders of the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, and they put their heart and soul into each original detail, custom lug, delicate braze or perfected weld that characterizes the skillfully crafted bicycles they produce. Framebuilding is truly a labor of love, and NAHBS was created as a medium to validate the talents and ingenuity of these extraordinary individuals who have dedicated their lives to the art of fabricating bicycle frames. Whether you are attending the show in person or viewing this guide after the show, the show organization and the exhibitors are sincerely delighted to have your interest, be it as an appreciative eye or as a future customer. Whether filet brazing a lug, mitering a tube, sizing up a rider, or seeing a finished frame leaving the shop after many hours of work, framebuilders never seem to get over one thing: how much satisfaction and enjoyment we get from doing what we do. It is hard to describe the pride of producing a frame that you know is exceptional and having the owner come back to tell you how much they enjoy riding it. I don’t know any framebuilders who did not first have a love of cycling themselves before venturing into framebuilding. For us to know that we have satisfied you as a customer and have enhanced your cycling experience is the greatest reward any framebuilder can have. The relationship between framebuilder and rider is quite a special one, and we spend a lot of time getting to know the customer when designing a frame. Developing this relationship is a very personal process that often lasts a lifetime and grows as the customer’s cycling experience and needs change over time. This is one of the beauties of NAHBS. The show is such a great opportunity for the public to meet the framebuilders in person, see the different approaches to making a bicycle and decide which framebuilder might share with you their visions of a dream bike. How you click with the framebuilder you choose is a big part of the whole process. For me, it is hugely satisfying to see the show floor full of people engaged in conversation with the exhibitors. This is the way it should work, and it makes the countless hours that my small team and I put into organizing this show all the more worthwhile. So welcome to the world of the handmade bicycles. I very much hope you find what you are looking for and that at the very least you gain a deeper understanding of the handmade bicycles and frames that are available and what it has taken to bring together, under one roof, such a marvelous array of bicycling hardware. At ANT we like to use True Temper steel-butted tubing (USA), and we fabricate the frames, forks, stems and racks on all ANT bicycles. Powder coating, wheel building and assembly are done in-house for a complete building process from order to delivery.

Bicycle Forest Bicycle Forest is known for such playful cycle designs as the Couchbike, the Hulabike and the Treadmill Bike, but its most significant contribution to the bicycle industry is its BikeCAD frame design software. BikeCAD has been popular among framebuilders since 1998. Originally developed as a tool for designing frames and determining the lengths and angles at which to cut the tubes, BikeCAD has grown to address more and more framebuilding challenges. BikeCAD can now account for paint, components and accessories, as well as rider fitting. BikeCAD is available as a free online tool and also as a standalone application called BikeCAD Pro. The popularity of BikeCAD among consumers has made BikeCAD Pro a musthave for commercial framebuilders and bicycle fit specialists.

Bilenky Cycle Works
/ Stephen Bilenky
My tinkering career began at age three with a percolator coffee pot. I sat on the kitchen floor taking it apart and putting it back together, preparing the skill set for my tween years’ Sturmey Archer three-speed hub rescue missions. Now the BCW framebuilding superheroes stand ready to take on your bike-building project. Our happy, dirty place turns out exquisite, clean machines. Whether it’s rideable jewelry or utilitarian workhorses, each frame gives evidence to the Bilenky pursuit of aesthetic functionality. For more than 25 years, it has been our mission to build light, practical and beautiful self-propelled fun.

/ Craig Calfee
One of the pioneers of carbon fiber framebuilding, Craig Calfee got his start in 1987. He invented three different ways of making carbon fiber frames and was the first to offer them in custom geometry. Calfee has a form-follows-function aesthetic that is shown in the materials selection and construction method. Inspired by forms found in nature, Craig has even explored natural materials, such as bamboo and hemp, for framebuilding. The bikes are meant to be ridden at the highest levels of competition, as well as for pure enjoyment. Most frames are made to order, even the stock geometry frames. Rider weight and riding style are taken into account. Some customers have logged more than 130,000 miles on their Calfee frames. Calfee takes pride in customer satisfaction for the long term, including offering a carbon repair service and a second life warranty policy for second (or third) owners. Calfee also produces a one-piece handlebar and stem unit (the BarStem).

CHERUBIM by Konno Cycleworks Founded in 1965, CHERUBIM represents the history of custom framebuilding in Japan. Three Konno brothers and their frames— CHERUBIM, 3Rensho and Miyuki — led the early age of the framebuilding industry in the country, and CHERUBIM is the only surviving brand with the family tradition. CHERUBIM was the frame supplier for the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games. CHERUBIM frames embody decades of ongoing research and uncompromising craftsmanship and have won seven consecutive Best Handmade Bicycle Awards from 1998 to 2005 in the prestigious annual show sponsored by the Japan Cycling Association. Under the leadership of Shin-ichi Konno, chief builder and son of founder Hitoshi Konno, CHERUBIM continues to live by its founding spirit of fusing innovation and tradition. We eagerly look forward to presenting our frames and bicycles as the first exhibitor with NJS keirin certification to participate in NAHBS.

Cicli Polito / Dan Polito deconstructeur // reconstructeur “Since crucial to anything we make is the way it is positioned and aimed, the contemplations are in some sense practical offerings to use in sharpening that aim.” – Keller Easterling A bicycle is not always cleanly carved into categories of road, track, commuter or mountain bike; nor is it a machine so sterile that it exists merely in wall thicknesses, butt lengths and grams. A custom bicycle assays the contemplation, among others, that there is more to the bike than the bike. Cicli Polito is a one-person artisan frame shop in Cleveland, Ohio, producing fine bicycles in execution and aesthetic. Framesets are crafted one at a time, distinctly aimed to address your contemplations.

Coho Bicycles / Chuck Lathe “If you ride bicycles long enough, you might decide that it’s hard to ride them as well as you’d like.” I started riding bicycles in the 1950s, and I’m still working on my style. On top of that, as far back as 1970, when I upgraded from a Schwinn Continental to a Gitane Tour de France, I’ve had the bug to build bicycles. During the winter of 2006, I completed the United Bicycle Institute framebuilding course and started building bicycles. And in summer 2007, with one son married and the other off to college, Nina and I packed up and moved to Franklinville, N.C., where I began building Coho bicycles for riders who are trying very hard to ride well. We think the Cohos are helping.

Everything began just after the war. It was 1947, I was 13 years old and crazy about bikes. It was the time of the Sunday magazine, the Domenica del Corriere, with its covers drawn by Walter Molino illustrating the feats of Bartali and Coppi. For me, it was a time for studying but also for dreaming. And in the workshop of Filippo Fasci, one of my relatives, I dreamed of building myself a bike and becoming a champion. It was in that little workshop that my destiny was decided. When I was 18 I set up business on my own and began this difficult but wonderful adventure that I am still experiencing today, with the same strength, desire and enthusiasm as in those early years.
Behind the name De Rosa you will not find the usual single patriarchal run cycling company.
Led by over 2 generations of artisan and craftsman, the De Rosa brand has been at the forefront of technology, and victory since the 1950’s.
De Rosa works in all 4 materials-Carbon, Titanium, Steel and Alloy as standard production, as well as customization within each material. You cannot make a racing bike if you do not have working knowledge of the materials being used. By working with all 4 materials De Rosa produces the perfect frame according to the vision and performance needs of the client.
I am a man who goes straight to the point. And, by force of habit, I never look back and count the years I have spent making frames. I prefer to look ahead because, after working for half a century, I am still convinced that the bicycle has room for improvement. And just as I have done up till now, in the future too I want to contribute to the evolution of this fascinating vehicle, which is at the same time so simple and so complicated.

TITANIUM
If steel is the ultimate noble metal, titanium must be considered to be the king of metals. The titanium frame is a product which goes beyond fashions. It is a frame destined for genuine purists of top-of-the-range racing cycles and lovers of unique objects. Clearly there are different degrees of titanium, varying in terms of their quality, characteristics and price, and a number of alloys which are very different from one another. The peculiarities of titanium are well-known: offering practically unlimited resistance to wear, an excellent relationship between specific weight and performance and a very high elastic modulus. Perhaps because of this many frame manufacturers concentrate on other materials. Our titanium range includes two models, the “3/2.5” and the “TITANIO XS”. The TiXS is realised using “6.4” titanium alloy tubes, very light with particular pliability, which makes construction difficult. Using a single core block the headtube is CNC machined to gain maximum strengthand form.

The 2009 NAHBS will mark 10 years (to the month) since I built my first frame. While there are other framebuilders who have been doing it longer, I still feel as though this is an accomplishment. As the years have passed, a lot has changed and some things haven’t. Constant for me is how much I enjoy taking a pile of tubes and creating a bicycle frame out of it. As my business has grown, I have resisted the urge to take on employees, fearing that I may turn more into a businessman and less of a framebuilder. So, as you can guess, I still personally build each frame that comes out of my shop, and I am confident it will stay that way. This allows me to constantly refine and improve my processes to always strive to build a better bicycle frame.

Goodrich Bicycles

I began my apprenticeship building bicycles in 1995 under the watchful eye of Dan Wynn in Seattle, paying my dues by filing, sanding fillets, machining and aligning frames and forks. I then spent two years working with Matt Houle at R&E Cycles before moving on to building Schwinn Paramounts at Match Bicycle Company. Two years later, Grant Petersen of Rivendell Bicycle Works contracted Match to build some of their customs. For the next year I built Rivendell frames, but change was again in the works as Match was closing. I continued to build custom Rivendells and the occasional Goodrich from 2000 to 2007. Orders for Goodrich bicycles evolved past my capacity to continue building for Rivendell and now provide me the opportunity to extend myself in ways that fully reflect my experience as a builder — a full range of what is possible in custom-lugged and fillet-brazed frames.

As a small boy, Jordan Hufnagel constructed miniature bicycles out of twigs, corn husks and paraffin wax in order to traverse the Indiana maize labyrinths in which he was raised. When steel was invented, Jordan spent long nights in the township fraidy hole teaching himself to weld. His family was unsupportive of his efforts, often force-feeding him lumpy and tepid gruel. When he was old enough, Jordan stuffed two pairs of jeans, a T-shirt and a broken music box into a satchel and hid himself in the cargo bay of a mail plane bound for Portland, Ore. An emaciated Jordan wandered into the rain and through the city streets until he passed out under a picnic table. A group of schoolchildren woke him and fed him apples and blackberries from their sack lunches. To show his gratitude, Jordan built them bicycles. He has been in business ever since.

I have been learning to build bicycle frames for the last 17 years. When I was younger, I quickly outgrew most production bikes and started thinking about making my own. Hunter Cycles was born from necessity not capitalism. I completed a two-year stint at an industrial arts college, and my enthusiasm for all things mechanical blossomed. After graduating I started building frames, inspired by San Francisco Bay Area builders and some East Coast outfits, by hand in friends’ garages. I paid my bills by working at bike shops and spent my money racing mountain and cross bikes all over the West. My experience has grown piece by piece, my tools and equipment bought, traded, designed, built and modified. My shop cannot be bought from a catalog; it’s handbuilt like the bikes it helps to create. My bikes are a part of me, an evolvement of my energy and ideas. Hunter Cycles comes to you this year with our bikes and our best wishes.

It was around this time that fortune smiled upon me and I was introduced to Ben Serotta. Thus began my training as a master framebuilder and a long, happy career doing what I truly love: designing and building fine works of functional, rolling art. After more than 20 years as a framebuilder and designer at Serotta Competition Bicycles, and with Ben’s blessing, I’m thrilled to finally offer a signature line of handmade frames bearing my name. I’m proud to announce the birth of K. Bedford Customs. Each handbuilt frame is a collaboration of my experience and your vision of the ultimate bike. When I started working as a professional framebuilder in 1989, I knew I had found my calling. At the time I worked in a large production shop and, while there was nothing glamorous about the work, I loved it. Now 20 years and thousands of frames later, I love it just as much, if not more. There is real satisfaction in making something by hand that is unique. I take pride in producing work that fits, performs and pleases the eye like only a handbuilt frameset can. As a one-man operation, I enjoy getting to know each customer and his or her needs. Every frameset is designed and built with its rider in mind and reflects the preferences and personality of its owner. Please stop by my booth or check out my website where you’ll see bikes made to be ridden hard and enjoyed for years to come. However, you won’t find any unrideable concept or show bikes made of leather or wood, just real bikes built for real people who appreciate fine things.

I love that with a few simple tools I can create something that will take you around a velodrome in just seconds or around the world at just the right speed. At NAHBS 2008, my crazy fixed-gear bicycle caught lots of attention with its eclectic mix of old and new, claiming three prestigious awards including Best in Show. It’s now in Austin, Texas, with its new rider, Lance Armstrong. I do not believe that any type of bike is better than another; they all have their place. The right bike is the one that is right for you. The first Naked frame was built 11 years ago and is still being ridden daily. We are located on Quadra Island in British Columbia, Canada. For 27 years, we have been committed to handbuilding the finest bikes for cyclists around the world. Since 1991, we have built our frames and components using only the highest-grade titanium. We choose titanium because it offers the best balance of stiffness, weight, durability and road damping, and only titanium allows our builders to achieve the high level of detail and hand-built artistry that we strive for. Our approach to bike building is simple: we embrace the details inherent in the handbuilt ethic and take zero shortcuts in the build process. It’s these details and our commitment to them that makes each Moots bike a truly exceptional ride. And it’s the family of quality inspired people that handbuild each bike that makes Moots a truly unique company.

Nobilette Cycles
/ Mark Nobilette
Since 1973, building bicycle frames has been a labor of love for Mark Nobilette. A framebuilding class with Albert Eisentraut led to Mark’s move to California to work with Eisentraut, where he worked for a year and raced for VeloSport. In 1977, he started Nobilette Cycles in Ann Arbor, Mich. After building road frames for many years, Nobilette built his own mountain bike in 1981. A move to Colorado in 1992 was hard on business. Mark took a job at GT Bicycles, which turned into a contract job building GT team frames in his shop. Since then, he has built for Zinn, Morgul Bismark, René Herse and RacerMate. Mark is currently the custom builder for Rivendell. While also trying to keep the Nobilette brand going, Mark has tried to be innovative, designing a break-away frame and a quick-release seat binder. He also has been making lugs to build truly unique frames. While aesthetics are important, good handling and stable riding have remained the focus.

It has turned out to be much more than making beautiful bikes. I could never have predicted what has transpired since then. Each bike I create carries a piece of that dream and vision. I hope you will ride your October on the path to your dreams, whatever they may be. My experience started well before I earned an engineering degree or went to work for one of the first names in titanium bikes. Bicycles have been a part of me forever. Tool, techniques and perhaps a little magic … October Hand Made Bikes.

Peacock Groove
/ Erik Noren
In a world increasingly focused on that which does not truly matter, Peacock Groove stands out as the framebuilder dedicated to what does, your new bike. The Upper Midwest has been fertile with many great framebuilders, and we carry on that tradition by taking “custom” to the next level. Short wheelbase 29ers? Well, yeah. Elegantly manipulated lugs and stays? Sure. Dropouts and skulls to set your bike apart? Ah, you betcha. Glistening stainless headbadges and accents? We woke up today, didn’t we? These are just a few of the details that go into setting you on the path to bicycle-induced righteousness or at least feeling really good about treating yourself to one of the finest human-powered pleasures on this planet. More passion, sweat and Chinese takeout go into every frame we build because getting you on the bike for you is mission-critical. From the deep north to you: Groove on!

richard sachs cycles Why buy a frame from a one-man shop still using traditional handbuilding methods? Because technology alone is a poor substitute for experience. As a youngster, Richard Sachs could not easily separate his enthusiasm for bicycle racing from the interest he had in the equipment used by the top athletes of the day. With a balance of dedication and perseverance, he pursued his competitive cycling as well as his choice of a framebuilder’s life. His dream of learning to build bicycles that could one day rival the machines he so revered led him to spend a year in London as an apprentice to Witcomb Lightweight Cycles. There he cultivated the basic skills that have become the foundation of his successful career. More than 35 years have passed, and Richard continues to zealously combine his racing background with his extensive framebuilding experience and has gained respect as one of the finest builders of custom bicycles in the world.

The year 2009 will mark the 10th year anniversary for RACF and five years since combining with our retail operations, Around Town Bicycles, Inc. The full-service retail store enables me to interface with clients, showcase my custom frames and serve the basic needs of my community. I specialize in steel road and singlespeed framesets but also build cyclocross, touring and urban specialty bikes. I’m a practical person and an analytic engineer, and I think this fits well with my career. Each aspect of framebuilding requires attention to detail with the understanding of the clients’ needs. I pride myself on good communication during the design, fabrication, assembly and, ultimately, the delivery of my bikes. Sound designs, reasonable time frame, experience and accessibility are the hallmarks of my business. I hope to make our shop, an easy day trip from several eastern cities, a destination in the heart of the Poconos.

Signal Cycles
/ Matt Cardinal and Nate Meschke
Signal Cycles began as an idea: a passion fostered in an environment of bicycle obsession. As co-workers in a nationally recognized service department, two mechanics and artists shared a love for making bicycles operate at peak efficiency. Their focus shifted to bike-building, and Signal was created. There are two faces behind Signal. Nate is better at cooking; Matt has better computer skills. Both are mechanics, artists, coffee consumers and cat lovers. Both are obsessed with making the best bikes they can. They also have earned BFA degrees in painting. At the shop, Matt and Nate are constantly pushing each other to bring every bike to its highest form. Both are involved in crafting each bicycle, from the design phase to final paint and parts selection. Each bike is unique and every aspect is considered. The goal at Signal is to give you a heart attack … of sheer joy … of biking.

Southwest Frameworks
/ David Cheakas
Southwest Frameworks has been custom-building and painting bicycle frames since 1984. Originally Cheakas Custom Cycles, a oneman custom bicycle frame shop, in 1994 we evolved into Southwest Frameworks. Our products and services now include custom framesets, frame repair, complete bicycles, frame refinishing and restoration. We believe that if the heart of the bicycle is the frame, then the soul of the bicycle is the fit. Custom bicycle frames from Southwest Frameworks are designed and built to fit the heart and soul of the rider. A custom-fit bicycle frame from Southwest Frameworks will help you achieve your cycling goals. Southwest Frameworks is dedicated to continuing the art of the custom, handcrafted bicycle frame. Although modern technology is employed in the manufacture and modification of the materials of the bicycle frame, it falls upon the skill of the framebuilder to weave these materials into a finished product.

Spectrum Powder Works / Mark Brandt My introduction to powder coating was through a local shop that did several bicycle frames as part of its regular business. I was disappointed to find out that the shop could only do very basic single-color work. I wanted pinstripes, panels, fades and lug detail, not just a single color. But was the inherent durability of powder worth sacrificing all that coollooking detail? There had to be a way. I’m glad to say that Spectrum has been a pioneer in making all of this happen. In 1997, Spectrum moved to a larger facility in Colorado Springs and added several new small builders. We have also added the highest quality liquid painting services to our palette of skills. As a result of our recent expansion, we are excited to offer more attention to individuals seeking the highest quality custom finish.

Strong Frames Inc. / Carl Strong It takes many years and many frames to become a proficient framebuilder and even longer to build at the level of the current masters. However, framebuilding is only part of the equation. The frame starts with you, the customer. Your frame is an extension of your personality, priorities and goals. The true art of framebuilding lies in the builder’s ability to divine from you exactly what you want. What separates me from most of my competitors is not the fact that I’ve built thousands of frames or that my frames are straighter or that they have prettier welds. What separates my work from my competitors’ is the process I’ve developed over the last 16 years: the process of learning, understanding and quantifying your goals and priorities and then converting them to the frame design. One can make the straightest, prettiest, cleanest, shiniest frame on the planet but if it isn’t what you want or need, it doesn’t matter how well it was crafted.

True Fabrication Bicycles / Cody Baron, Clark Davidson & Cole Thompson True Fabrication Bicycles is an Austin-based trio of riders who joined forces to make bicycles one at a time, with passion and attention to detail. We have been friends for many years. We ride, race, travel and train together. Since 2005, we have been building TIG-welded steel road, mountain, track and commuter frames for our customers and are glad to be back at NAHBS in 2009. Each of us is capable of taking a bicycle frame from inception to completion, and we each have developed our individual talents in the framebuilding process, yet all three of us work on every frame. This is what makes us a great team. We don’t take shortcuts; rather we are willing to do what is necessary to make something aesthetically pleasing and fully functional. This means that we don’t follow trends or fads just to sell bikes. Not only are we framebuilders, we’re riders and that makes a difference.

Villin Cycle Works / Alexis Dold The year 2009 is shaping up to be very exciting at Villin Cycle Works. First, Villin is proud to formally recognize Giuseppe Marchionno as a journeyman framebuilder. Joe has been working under Alexis Dold for three years. He has spent countless hours perfecting all of the skills necessary to build complete frames. His beautiful work is a testament to his steadfast devotion. He will be accepting orders at the show. Order early to take advantage of his current three-month wait. With frames starting at $1,000, Joe’s wait won’t be short for long. Carrying on the spirit of groundbreaking design and pioneering the application of new materials, we are also proud to introduce the use of forge-welded steel or “Damascus” steel forged and machined by Alexis into various parts of our already strong repertoire of unique construction techniques, including hammered and polished stainless steel lugs and copper-wrapped joints. Finally, we will be opening our custom paint facility to customers outside of the Villin family. You can see several examples on display at our booth or online.

Zullo / Tiziano Zullo After 10 years of racing road and cyclocross, Italian Tiziano Zullo entered the world of framebuilding at age 23. In the early 1970s, he made “plain wrapper” frames for other companies and started to build for amateur teams under the Zullo name. From 1986 through 1992, he made frames from SL, SLX, MAX and MS tubesets for well-known pro riders on the Dutch Team TVM. His framebuilding skills were tested by joining with the MX Onda team. When the market demanded aluminum frames in 1994, Tiziano transferred his skills to TIG welding and also bonding carbon. Not forgetting his roots, Tiziano continues to make steel frames. The Belle, a MAX-tubed limited edition frame, will make its debut at NAHBS. Very few builders today have worked with so many professional riders and in so many different materials. Tiziano keeps building frames, one at a time, for any cyclist who wishes to share his passion.
