Small Spurs action Stran Schlosser of Nanton dismounts after racing the length of the arena at the Small Spurs Rodeo in Claresholm last Saturday. Stran’s run of 12.49 seconds was worthy of first place in nine to 14-year-old boys goat tying. The fast-paced event saw some spills as riders dismounted, a few feisty goats and young participants with an abundance of perseverance. My Little Corner Difficult times tend to bring out the best in people, as neighbours and strangers alike team up to assist those in need.

The wind has been behind all kinds of damage this fall, from twisting car doors off, uprooting huge trees, overturning semis and other vehicles to blowing the roof off J.T. Foster High School in Nanton.

Two fires, one near Nanton and the other between Fort Macleod and Granum, raged through the dry grass fields Jan. 4 leaving all kinds of devastation in their wake.

Emergency workers, friends, family members, and anonymous Good Samaritans stepped up without hesitation to do whatever they could that day.

The fires have left behind significant damage, but it’s a huge relief that no one was seriously injured and no lives were lost that day.

The smoke has cleared, and those

who have lost their homes, their livestock and/or their livelihood are beginning to figure out what comes next.

Families are in need, and again communities near and far are rallying to provide what they can.

Trinity United Church in Fort Macleod held a fundraiser last week, cash donations are being accepted at many locations, and as more stories come to light, people are digging a little bit deeper to help out.

We will also share information about fundraising efforts that individuals and groups share with us in a no-charge ad.

Recent surveys of Lethbridge and Crowsnest Pass area residents showed that up to 75 per cent of respondents were against logging this special area.

An interesting call The content of this “letter” has been put to paper based on a phone call received Monday morning.

The caller introduced himself as Wyatt from Stavely. A few of you may know him!

Wyatt has a strong Scottish accent and we had a fun chat.

He wanted to share his thoughts about our publication, and mentioned that he liked the writing and the story topics but feels the paper is too short – he’d like to see it be “bigger and longer.”

He asked if I would be attending the Robbie Burns Celebration in Stavely this weekend. I told him that he’d be able to identify me as the mom accompanying a gal in a lime-green kilt. He says that he’ll be in his kilt as well. Awesome.

Wyatt was concerned at how taxpayer money was being spent when three RCMP vehicles visited Stavely recently to meet up with a fellow who had an outstanding ticket.

The negative comment we’ll take to heart is that our paper is “useless to put fish and chips in!”

I agree that Shootin’ the Breeze doesn’t have enough pages to wrap a lunch in, and with the type of paper we use it likely wouldn’t keep your lunch warm which I believe is the reason behind that tradition!

It might be fun to try though, especially with the slippery colour finish on the pages ... it could make for an interesting meal and an interesting story!

Piping a tribute to Mr. Burns Fans of Scottish poet Robbie Burns can look forward to an evening of Scottish food and entertainment Jan. 21 in Pincher Creek.

The celebration will be held at the golf club restaurant, with Barry and Sophie Carney creating a feast of cock-a-leekie soup, greens, the “Great Chieftain o’ the Puddin-race!” (haggis), bashed neeps and champit tatties along with roast stirk (beef) and veggies.

Local piping teacher Margaret Hanna resurrected a Robbie Burns tradition in Pincher Creek three years ago when she realized that her bagpipe students needed more in-depth exposure to Scottish culture.

She also knew that they would benefit from the “experience of piping under pressure” in front of an audience.

The initial effort began as a private party which “spilled over into the main golf club restaurant as bagpipes and haggis have a tendency to do.”

job of his delivery last year. Margaret says that “this year he has threatened to recite all eight verses.” As well as piping, Rhys has excellent dramatic skills and this would be most entertaining.

Margaret describes the Scottish treat as tasting “better than meat loaf ” with “healthier ingredients than a hot dog” and says that her family would “eat haggis any day of the week if it was available.”

Margaret is hestitant to have anything about the evening be “about her” – but it does happen because of Margaret, her students and their families.

Margaret was given a set of pipes when she was growing up in Scotland that she played in competitions all over the world. She laments the loss of these pipes in “the great flood of Pincher Creek a few years back.”

With a new set of pipes under her arm, Margaret intends to continue sharing her love of piping and Scottish culture with the community.

Learning the ropes Ag society president Janet Watmough was thrilled to have 45 participants turn out for an evening of roping instruction Jan. 13 in Pincher Creek.

Ropers ranged in age from four years to adult, and it wasn’t just the instructors giving a hand with the lessons.

Little Miss Rodeo Pincher Creek, Chelsea Stokke, takes roping seriously, and was impressed with both the instructors and the low cost of the workshop.

Ben Schwartz travelled from the Chain Lakes area to work on skill improvement. He intends to return for the second workshop coming up on Jan. 27.

Both ranch and team roping will be covered at that session.

By Tina Webber I started out this week’s column writing about the indulgences given to children at Christmas time.

Personally, I see children expecting and even demanding things without ever earning them. More than that, thinking they deserve them.

And yes, we have created this generation by feeling we should give them more than we had.

Well, that was how it started – but I have to share a thought, maybe an epiphany, that turned into an action. I hope all who are reading the column will consider following.

I woke up the other morning at 7 a.m. (my usual time) and wondered, “Why should I get up so early?” I could sleep in till noon with no worries.

My second thought, however, was, “What a waste of the morning.” After all, each day is an unwritten page of our life story. We can write something positive or negative on that page and we are given that choice each day!

So I decided to send a message to those important to me.

This was the beginning of the email adapted to each recipient: I chose to do something positive with the hopes that those I have contacted will do the same. Who knows what shore the ripples will reach from this cast pebble.

I feel it is important to let the people you love,

appreciate or have had a significant impact on your life know it.

And that is why I am writing you....

And so I wrote emails to the people who have thusly influenced my life.

The first one was to my son because I know I don’t say “I love you” enough to him.

It turned out to be about appreciation as well. To let him know I appreciate the man he has become, and yes, I do love and respect that man.

I wrote several letters and the response was, well, heartwarming.

My son was near tears after reading it (very uncommon for him).

All the responses were much the same.

I had thought the email recipients knew the love and appreciation I had for them, but I guess it does no harm to reiterate those feelings.

I am pleased to know that the message brought them happiness.

I’m so glad I did not waste the morning.

I know I cannot make peace in the Middle East, but I can positively affect my small corner of the world, and so can you!

Baxter Black is described by the New York Times as “probably the nation’s most successful living poet.” Ag society president Janet Watmough says “this is a night out that you won’t want to miss!”

Everything about Baxter is cowboy – from his personality to his poetry to his humongous moustache.

By Helen Friesen A cabaret will be held Jan. 28 to raise money to assist victims of the prairie fire that burned southeast of Nanton on Jan. 4.

The event, sponsored by the Nanton Emergency Fund, will be held at the Nanton Community Centre, with doors opening at 8 p.m.

Music by Lori Kole and Hillbilly Arms of Calgary will start at 8:30 and the band will provide an evening of popular country rock.

Local auctioneer Jordy Waters will get a live auction going at 9 p.m., and a silent auction will run throughout the evening.

Lenora McLelland is an organizer of the event and says the proceeds will be used to “replenish Nanton emergency funds already paid out to fire victims.”

She adds that “some families who only sustained smoke damage are beginning to move back, while others whose homes were destroyed are working with insurance and finding places to live in the meantime, with the help of the fund.”

Tickets are $10 and can be picked up in Nanton at Mainstreet Café, Home Hardware, Cowboy Country, Because I Said So and Sam’s Western Outlet, as well as from Foothills Custom Promotionals in High River.

Attendees must be 18 years or older.

Lenora says tickets will also be sold at the door “if there are any left, as we have to follow capacity regulations.”

The thrill of the cat Castle Mountain Ski Resort is the only hill in Alberta to offer a cat skiing service, and if you’re all about powder and adventure you should give it a whirl.

Avalanche training is provided at the cat’s destination and then you’re free to make your way down the mountain. Cat skiing is booked for the full day, and you can fit in six to 10 runs, depending on conditions and the skiing level of your group as a whole.

Winter Dreams in Claresholm Claresholm Skating Club will host the South Region FunSkate this weekend.

The competition begins Friday and wraps up Sunday, with skaters from 22 figure skating clubs across southern Alberta competing in 427 events.

The competition features elements, free skate, solo dance, interpretive and team events over the course of the three days and will offer a high level of quality to those interested in taking in the action.

In the elements event, skaters perform different jumps, spins and movements without music.

Most are familiar with the free skate where a solo skater has a choreographed

routine filled with jumps and spins and set to music.

The solo dance events will see the skaters performing a set pattern of steps to music.

Interpretive skating is a fun opportunity for skaters to perform a themed solo without required elements.

Team events see groups of four skaters each performing an element that they may excel in.

All events span beginner to gold levels, which means skating fans can expect a weekend of top level performances.

CNP Boys and Girls back in action The Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club received a huge boost in December courtesy of a $5,000 donation from the Telus Community Action Team of southern Alberta.

The outlook for operations this year is bright thanks to the generous Telus support and grant opportunities the organization didn’t have access to last year.

“These funds are a definite boost toward getting our 2012 programs on track,” comments club treasurer, Scott Warris. “It is with the support from community focused corporations like Telus that the Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass will be able to fill the need in our community for sustained youth programs.”

Although the club hasn’t been running their after school programs, work has been going on behind the scenes

to have all of the regular opportunities available to the community as soon as possible.

The first big activity of the year is coming up Jan. 31, when up to 50 children aged six to 12 have the opportunity to participate in an exciting day of theatre and water sports.

Tim Hortons and the United Way of Southern Alberta are supporting the trip, which will see the kids visiting the Max Bell Aquatic Centre at the University of Lethbridge followed by a custom tour of the Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod.

The fee for the day is a tax deductible suggested donation of $25 to the club, and a number of sponsored spots are available for families who require them.

Many people have difficulty dealing with the loss or death of a loved one.

Emotions run high during the grieving process, and can leave one wondering if their feelings and reactions are normal.

If you are dealing with the death of someone you loved and are wondering who you can talk to and who will understand what you’re going through, this group will be of interest to you.

Jeff Nemeth of Windblown Counselling is sponsoring and facilitating an eight-week grief support group for anyone who is grieving the loss of someone special in their life.

The first meeting is Jan. 19 at the Foothills Community Church in Pincher Creek beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Understanding grief and sharing with others facing similar challenges is a focus of the support group.

Ready to rock

After a year and a half without curling ice to call their own, Pincher Creek Curling Club members will celebrate their first games in their hometown rink this week.

Young and old are welcome to join a league, and the club has plans in the works to offer introductory opportunities for newcomers who would like to try the sport.

Men’s league will be the first group to take to the ice on Tuesday at 7 p.m., with registration at 6:30.

Many members took in the first annual Frontier Outdoor Turkey Shoot held at Kootenai Brown Village Pond last weekend. About 30 people came out on the frosty afternoon to throw rocks across the natural ice in support of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village and the curling club.

Participants enjoyed smokies and a bonfire and lots of laughs over attempts to get the regular rocks and the heritage rock to the far end of the pond.

Tossing the heritage rock, dated circa 1890, was a highlight of the chilly afternoon and Rick Visser earned a bottle of Wild Turkey for placing the rock closest to the button.

Joyce Elliott stuck on the button more than once and took home the top prize of a turkey, Laurie Glen won the chicken, and Shannon Robin won a Cornish hen.

Ernie Olsen received a special prize for his interesting style, and Toni Lucas took home a lovely trophy for the rock travelling the least distance.
