My Little Corner Despite the occasional dumps of snow, it feels like spring is finally on its way.

Thanks go to Gerry Smith of Cowley for sharing his bluebird sightings through photos. You can check them out at www.shootinthebreeze.ca .

Many people have been celebrating Easter and the school break by travelling to spend time with their families.

This means many familiar faces have returned to their hometowns in the area, while others have made trips away.

For anyone with a bit of lead in their right foot, be aware that RCMP are focusing on speeding drivers this month. Over 3,500 speeding tickets were given out this past weekend across the province.

It’s also a good time for a reminder about drinking and driving, and texting and driving.

There have been many alcohol-related incidents coming through in RCMP press releases over the past few days.

Remember that it’s not only your own life at risk when you are distracted behind the wheel, and travel safely over the holiday.

Enough lecturing!

Next week is your chance to thank volunteers in your community.

I challenge you to personally acknowledge and say thank you to at

least five people who make your town a better place.

According to the 2007 Canadian Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating, more than seven per cent of the population are “uber volunteers.”

This single group contributes nearly 80 per cent of the total volunteer hours tallied.

I’m willing to bet you know some of these uber volunteers!

Community celebrations are taking place in Pincher Creek and Claresholm next week. This is a great opportunity for you to acknowledge people who are giving of their time, energy and talent for the good of others.

Last weekend there were Easter egg hunts, community socials and recreational activities open to everyone – and planned and executed by a few.

It’s easy to take events like this for granted, but just as easy to express sincere appreciation to those who make sure these kinds of things happen.

If you’d like to send out a public note of thanks to a special volunteer, teacher or mentor, we’ll be publishing submissions in next week’s issue of Shootin’ the Breeze.

Fishburn bunny This little snuggle bunny spent Friday afternoon at the family Easter egg hunt at Fishburn Park.

About 55 people came out for the festivities, including children and grandchildren from near and far.

Kids searched the 10-acre park for coloured eggs and made good use of the playground equipment.

As a special surprise, Matthew Harding thrilled the crowd with his juggling and flame-twirling skills.

Thanks to a community effort, everyone enjoyed a potluck lunch and hot chocolate around the fire. See more photos in this week’s online edition.

Nanton Camera Club gets owly

By Shannon Robin If you’re looking for a place to share your photos and learn more about photography in a supportive environment, you’ll find it at the monthly meetings of the Nanton Camera Club.

About 20 members attend the meetings regularly, while another 20 participate when they can. The club has created a Facebook page for online discussions and photo sharing.

Linda Maki and Steve Wild host the monthly meetings at their home/studio in Nanton.

“It’s a chance to get together for a fun evening with a bunch of congenial people who are passionate about photography,” Linda says. “Everyone shares their work and love of photography, and it’s a great way for all of us to learn.”

photos are displayed and discussed. Members come away with positive feedback about their pieces, along with hints and suggestions.

“The quality that comes in here is amazing,” Linda says.

The meetings open with an instructional session and there’s also time for refreshments and socializing.

The club has been invited to share its work at Against the Grain Art Gallery in Nanton, May 1 to 17, and members are excited about this first-time opportunity.

Every three months, things get competitive and club members put their best efforts up for judging on representation of theme, technical expertise (composition, sharpness, contrast, etc.) and overall artistic impression.

The next competition is in May with a theme of symmetry.

The group also has a field trip coming

up in June. “Everybody is there to help each other out,” Linda says, so it’s a great chance to get assistance if you’re having trouble getting a certain shot.

Correspondence between club members can lead to interesting discussions and sharing. A few weeks ago, one member asked if anyone had suggestions for locations to photograph owls. This led to many images and owl sites being passed around via email.

Teddy bear day April 17 It won’t exactly be a picnic, but teddy bears and those who love them will be gathering at the Windsor Seniors Centre in Lundbreck next Tuesday.

“Everyone is welcome, says organizer Lou Niven. “We’re very proud of the building and the things going on here.”

Teddy bear day gets underway at 10 a.m. and four guests will share their bear expertise.

Rose Olson of Lundbreck is known for the bears she’s been making from old fur coats for more than 10 years.

“Each one tells a story,” she says.

Many people ask her to make bears as memorial treasures or personal gifts.

Each bear is 16 to 18 inches in height and takes a couple of days to make.

Edie Barlishen, also of Lundbreck, will be sharing her miniature keepsake bears as well.

EAT WHAT YOU LIKE IN COMFORT

Monica Primrose operates Primrose Doll Repairs from her home west of Coleman, where she restores, repairs and re-dresses all kinds of dolls and stuffed animals.

Monica plans to show several works in progress to give people a better understanding of the kinds of work that can be done.

“I’ve always loved my dolls,” she says of her passion, which has blossomed into a business.

Her most memorable job was working on a three-foot-tall bear from 1915. “I never forgot him,” she says.

Barbara Clay from the University of Lethbridge will share results of an adult birthday project using teddy bears, which was successful with her staff.

CAMERA CLUB, from page 3 their Calgary home, Steve and Linda came across an old church for sale.

“It was love at first sight,” Linda says.

The old Baptist church was more than a century old and the style suited the couple perfectly as a home, studio and historic landmark.

It didn’t take long for them to become well-known members of the small community and surrounding area.

“We just love Nanton. It’s lovely and quiet and the people are so friendly,” Linda says. “Over the years we’ve developed an excellent business.”

The duo offered instructional classes and private lessons, and a full menu of studio and on-location photography.

They started the camera club just over a year ago in response to requests from many of their students who wanted to get together to share their works and ideas.

The group held meetings in the studio portion of the building, but took a break after the studio suffered extensive damage in January from burst water pipes.

Linda and Steve took this as a sign it was time to slow down from their busy schedule.

Riverside Photographics has become Steve and Linda Professional Photographers, and will move forward doing only on-location shoots.

“When clientele comes back to us it’s because they’ve had a good experience,” Linda says. Their full schedule shows that they’ve created many good experiences.

“When we make people feel really good about themselves it makes us feel good about what we do.”

The next camera club meeting will be held April 26 at Steve and Linda’s home. There isn’t a designated theme, so members can bring any work they like, or even one that didn’t meet expectations.

Alex faces challenges with good cheer

By Amber Lee Mohl In the community of Bellevue, it would seem everybody knows his name.

Alex Rangen, who was raised in Crowsnest Pass, is well known around these parts for his congenial nature and determination.

He has etched a place of his own in the hearts of those who know him.

Alex was born with cerebral palsy, but that hasn’t stopped him from working hard and playing harder. With support and encouragement from the community, the Legion and his family, Alex has become an active part of Bellevue and the Pass in general.

In fact, he’s done more than most. On top of taking the plunge and bungee jumping, Alex has also gone rock climbing, and felt the adrenaline rush of zip lining through the air.

That’s not all. Every year since 2004, Alex has made his way to Castle Mountain during the wintery weekends to hit the slopes with the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing. From sit-skiing and four-tracking, Alex has built up his strength and skills to adjust to snowboarding. He utilizes a snow wing to stand upright and maintain his balance.

You may see Alex out and about with

his guide dog, Pesto. It was the Lions Club which approached Alex about obtaining a guide dog, and while it took 5½ years to find the perfect match, adopt and train him, the family says it was well worth the wait.

Now his trusty guide dog of three years, Pesto continues to be a big part of Alex’s life.

“He’ll open and close doors, pick up anything I drop, tug off hoodies, jackets, pants, socks, bark for help, and go get people if I need someone.”

Alex works at the Bellevue Legion, behind the scenes in office management, helping out with books, filing and general office duties.

“It’s good experience. The hours work for me and it’s in the same town,” he says. “The job was just conducive to my situation.”

In July, Alex plans to make a major change in his life. He’s been accepted into the computer information systems program at DeVry Institute of Technology, where he’ll major in web development and minor in business. This means a possible move to the city, a huge transition that Alex is really looking forward to.

When asked what his future plans are, he says, “To get through school and find a job!”

Alex has been raised to never accept the “I can’t” approach to life, and his family has always encouraged him to “Go out and get whatever you desire.”

He also enjoys a good night out with friends, and you can often catch him singing a song or three during karaoke night. So if you see Alex around town, be sure to shake his hand and wish him well in his future endeavours.

With only a few months remaining in their reign, Chelsea Stokke and Jodie Dunbar have had a busy winter as ambassadors for the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society. Passing on the rodeo reigns

By Shannon Robin The Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo has been well represented this year by queens Jodie Dunbar and Chelsea Stokke.

The young women have become familiar faces in the area, representing the rodeo, the ag society and the town at numerous events locally and regionally.

Both Jodie and Chelsea have demonstrated confidence and style in their many public appearances and are setting a high standard as young role models.

To earn their titles, Chelsea and Jodie went through a full day of judging prior to the rodeo last August. Criteria included horsemanship skills, public speaking, personality, poise, appearance and overall suitability.

Jodie has been riding horses her entire life and assists with all kinds of activities on the family ranch near Twin Butte.

Jodie attends the University of Lethbridge and is close to completing a bachelor of science in agriculture management and GIS. She’s enthusiastic about promoting agriculture and hopes to start her own business, using her GIS skills to offer economic advisory

services in precision agriculture.

She joked last fall that she wasn’t one to worry about makeup and hair, and now finds herself watching videos and spending time on developing her own style as a queen.

“It’s definitely a unique uniform,” she says of the bling and dressing up that have come along with her role.

It’s not just little girls in the crowd who look enviously at the outfits Jodie and Chelsea sport at their various outings!

“Doing the charity dinners was interesting because it shows how great a place Pincher Creek really is,” Jodie says. “I didn’t have a clue that all these events existed.”

Jodie and Chelsea have attended most events together and have developed a strong friendship even though they didn’t know one another prior to the competition last summer.

Chelsea also began riding horses on the family ranch at a very young age.

She’s an active rodeo competitor, and last year earned a spot in the Canadian Ranch Roping Finals.

Along with the public appearances, Chelsea has been busy every other Friday this winter

instructing at the beginner roping clinics sponsored by the ag society.

She plans to get more active with team roping this summer even though she’s currently sidelined with a dislocated shoulder.

“It’s fun,” she says of her experience as a rodeo queen. “Getting to meet and know so many people in the community has been really memorable.”

Chelsea will graduate from Matthew Halton High School this spring and plans to stay around the Pincher Creek area for another year.

Both say they’ve had a great time as rodeo queens and have developed a high level of selfconfidence through the experience.

Chelsea plans to put her hat in the ring for the Miss Rodeo Pincher Creek title this summer, and Jodie is contemplating entering the Miss Rodeo Canada competition.

Their reign isn’t over yet, but the ag society is looking for young women interested in applying for the role for next year.

Trade show to benefit COP Citizens on Patrol will benefit from the upcoming Fort Macleod Community Trade Show.

Korine Kreft heads up a group of community-minded volunteers who have taken on the task of hosting a trade show the past three years.

“I started the trade show because I wanted a good way to promote our fencing business,” she says. “We’d go to the Home and Garden in Lethbridge, the shows in Claresholm, the Pass and Pincher Creek, but there was nothing in our hometown.”

“Years ago the chamber used to have them and I remember going as a kid. So really, why couldn’t it be done again?”

Korine is joined in her efforts by her husband Richard along with Keith Veldhuis, Martin Fieret.

The trade show provides committee members and other local and area

businesses an opportunity to promote themselves. It also plays an important community role by donating the proceeds to a local organization each year.

In 2010, the $10,000 raised went to the volunteer fire department. The funds were used to buy a cargo trailer to store ice water rescue gear and a boat.

Last year, $7,500 was donated to the playground committee for its spray park project.

Citizens on Patrol will receive the proceeds from the third annual show, coming up April 20 and 21 at the Fort Macleod arena.

There will be a silent auction for the volunteer fire department. Last year’s auction raised $3,500.

There are still a few vendor spots available and Korine anticipates a full house.

“Island of Vice: Theodore Roosevelt’s Doomed Quest to Clean Up Sin-Loving New York”

by Richard Zacks (Doubleday, $27.95) Reviewed by Larry Cox Theodore Roosevelt was a force to be reckoned with, but not even he could tame New York City during the 1890s. During that decade, which would later be called the “naughty nineties,” the city was home to more than 40,000 prostitutes, countless brothels, gambling dens and all-night dives. There also were criminal rings and thugs of every type imaginable. Although Roosevelt admitted he knew nothing about police management, the future president became police commissioner in 1895 and made cleaning up the city his top priority.

Roosevelt immediately locked horns with the corrupted powers at Tammany Hall. He began making midnight rambles with muckraker Jacob Rils so that they could observe firsthand the lewd realities that seemed to lurk

on almost every corner. As Roosevelt tried to persuade 2 million New Yorkers that wholesome family fun was more enjoyable than the sinful alternatives, he quickly learned that the citizens of the city loved sin more than salvation.

The 36-year-old Roosevelt had galloped into Manhattan vowing to drive out sin, only to find himself involved in a fight with streetsmart Irish cops, cunning madams and thirsty German beer-garden lovers who rose up en mass when he tried to close saloons on Sunday.

Just as fascinating are the colorful, often outrageous characters featured in the narrative. For example, Rev. Charles Parkhurst, the minister of Madison Square Presbyterian Church, after being accused of knowing too little about vice, put on a disguise and personally toured some of the city’s more notorious dens, including brothels, saloons and even a transvestite club.

Author Richard Zacks has written a witty, richly detailed account of one of America’s most colorful politicians and his attempt to clean up the seedy underbelly of New York City. If this story had a moral it would be a simple one, namely never try to take a beer away from a New Yorker. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

By Steve Becker With a Little Bit of Luck All important championships, whether local, regional, national or international, are played in a duplicate format in order to reduce the element of luck that might otherwise determine their outcome. Nevertheless, the luck factor cannot be entirely eliminated.

For instance, the succession of opponents you meet might or might not play well against you, which certainly will have an important bearing on how you fare. Also, you (or your opponents) might get to excellent contracts that go down because of horrendous distribution, or get to poor contracts that make because of highly favorable distribution.

Consider this deal played in the Blue Ribbon Pairs many years ago by Dorothy Hayden Truscott and B. Jay Becker. They reached three notrump on the bidding shown. Mrs. Truscott’s three-notrump bid with the singleton king of clubs was certainly imaginative and was amply

rewarded when she made the contract after West led a low club.

She won East’s queen with the king and ran six diamonds, subjecting West to severe pressure.

He followed twice and was able to discard a heart and a spade comfortably, but then, in order to protect his king of spades, he was forced to discard two clubs.

Mrs. Truscott next led a heart. West took the ace and cashed three clubs, but that was the end of the line as West was forced to lead from the K-8 of spades at the end.

You could call the hand a brilliant success -- if you were so minded -- but, all the same, there was a lot of luck attached to it. At another table, against similar bidding, West made the inspired lead of the ace of clubs against three notrump, and East-West collected the first seven tricks to put the contract down three!

It’s not difficult for an actor to imagine there are aliens who are abducting people.

But that’s a far cry from actually believing that as a person. With Gillian (Anderson, “Scully”) and David (Duchovny, “Mulder”), it was reverse too, because David

was a skeptic and Gillian was a believer.” *** Q: I was thrilled to see William Baldwin on “30 Rock,” portraying the actor who played Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin’s character) in the movie about Jack and Avery’s life together. parents -- and the dynamic between the parents themselves -- feels authentic. The marriage is already strained, and how can she not feel guilty knowing that her identity causes even more tension? To be a pariah is to be an outcast, but this film shows real compassion for its protagonist.

Chris (Wahlberg) is a smugglerturned-straight who loves his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and his two sons. A botched drug deal lands his brother-in-law in deep trouble with some bad guys, so Chris has to enter the criminal world for one last run.

Wahlberg gets to do tough-guy stuff while being backed by a more comedic -- and better characterized -- supporting cast. You’ll be pulled in right away, but it’s another question as to whether you’ll be engaged enough when the plot twists start to fly later in the film.

“Young Goethe in Love” (NR) -- Goethe was a German romantic poet. Congratulations, you are now qualified to watch this highly fictionalized romantic-comedy period drama about his life before he was a famous writer. He fails his law ex-

ams and gets flung out into the country to work under a head prosecutor. Goethe manages to fall for exactly the wrong girl: She is beautiful, but her father wants her to marry Goethe’s boss. How romantic and tawdry and Victorian.

It’s not until later in the story that our Goethe has anything to do with writing famous poetry -- the real focus is on the gorgeous rolling landscapes, and the things people do in them while wearing authentic costumes.

“Pariah” (R) -- Coming of age and coming out stories have been done before, but this debut of writer/director Dee Rees shows fresh perspective and powerful storytelling. Alike (Adepero Oduye) is 17 years old, lives with her parents in Brooklyn and has no idea how to move forward with her life as a lesbian.

DOG OF THE WEEK “The Wicker Tree” (R) -- Two Christian missionaries from America are led down the rabbit hole by a bunch of dirty Scottish pagans. It’s not very scary or suspenseful, and it mostly falls flat when trying to bring in its own humor. At least in the 2006 “The Wicker Man,” we all got to laugh as Nick Cage tried to overact his way out of being a human sacrifice.

Truly, even the most empathetic person alive had to laugh at the scene where he’s stung by bees. There just isn’t any of that hilarious bathos in this flick, so you can skip it.

A typical camp’s offerings might include sailing, riflery, wind surfing, rowing, kayaking, arts and crafts, drama, camp craft, archery, tennis, soccer, softball, swimming, diving, canoeing, kickball, English horseback riding and a ropes course. Others have waterskiing, dance (contemporary, ballet, jazz), plant identification and tracking, woods camping, photography, pottery ... and more.

To get started in your hunt for a summer

If you need assistance paying for summer camp, search online for the name of your state and campership. You’ll find a great many camps that offer fully or partially paid camperships. Additionally, there are foundations and grant programs that give money every year for children to go to camp. On the local level, investigate low cost or free sleep-away or day camp experiences through your YMCA (look for different theme weeks to match your child’s interests), Salvation Army, garden and environmental groups, town, Scouts and church.

If you also have time off (or there’s a grandparent who will fill in), ask about volunteering as a way of defraying

expenses, perhaps in the kitchen or as a crafts or sports assistant.

If all else fails and there is no way to afford camp, band together with parents in a similar situation and create your own.

Arrange for the campers to spend one day a week at a different house with theme activities hosted by the parents based on their talents, or field trips to local sites such as a farm or museum. Make one night a camp out in the yard. Hot dogs, S’mores, sleeping bags, flashlights -- and ghost stories -- are all you’ll need.

If you’re able to donate, the money you send to local camps will allow children to have the camp experience even though it’s not in the family budget.

Make ABC Puppets With Personality Every nook and cranny of your home can be a stage when your kids play with puppets. Stirring up imaginations can be as easy as putting your hands in socks or even drawing a face on a banana.

Here’s a way to tell a tale while practicing the ABC’s. Make a special collection of puppets with kids that show off 26 endearing personalities, as inspired by the ABCs. Start with one or two letters, and add to your collection every week. Here’s how: 1. Make a basic hand-puppet pattern by placing an adult hand (with thumb and pinkie extended to the sides and three middle fingers together) on a sheet of paper. Draw around the hand, allowing extra space on all sides. The pattern should be about 12 inches long and 8 inches wide at the widest point. Adjust the sketch to make it even, and cut out along the lines.

2. Place the pattern on two pieces of lightweight felt, then pin and cut out. Use a hole punch to punch holes around the cut-out felt pieces 1/2 inch in from the edge (except the bottom edge) and about 1/2 inch between each hole. It is easier to punch the holes one layer of felt at a time.

Be sure that holes match up when placing the pieces together.

3. Match the felt pieces, and weave cording or a long shoelace in and out of the holes, beginning and ending at the bottom corners of the puppet shape. Knot each end. Your child’s hand should fit in the bottom opening with the three middle fingers in the wide body and the thumb and pinkie to the sides.

4. Use felt scraps to cut a shape of an alphabet letter. Glue the letter onto the puppet. Add details such as buttons, wiggly eyes, yarn, pipe cleaners, fabric scraps, trinkets, etc., to create the puppet’s features and personality. The items should represent words that start with the same alphabet letter. Here are some ideas: “A” is for Alligator, wearing antlers, carrying an apple with an ant crawling on top; “B” is for Baby Bunny with a blue bow and buttons; “H” is for Hippo with a heart and a hanky;

“L” is for Lazy Lion with leaves and a lollipop; “P” is for Purple, Polka-dot Pig with a peace sign, pearl and pompom; “T” is for Turkey with a turquoise tutu and two teeth; “W” is for Woolly Walrus with a wiry wig; “Z” is for Zany Zebra with a zero and a zigzag. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Whooping Cough Makes an Unwelcome Return DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband has had a cough that seems to have lasted forever. He saw several doctors. Each gave him a different diagnosis and different treatment. None worked.

The last doctor believed he had whooping cough and tested him for it. He did have it. The doctor said the cough would go away. He put him on antibiotics, but he said they wouldn’t shorten the cough. Why did he give them to him? Isn’t whooping cough a thing of the past, and wasn’t it a children’s disease? -- K.P. ANSWER: Whooping cough -- pertussis is the medical name -- used to be a frequent childhood illness. It is highly communicable, and in some infants, it proves to be fatal. The vaccine practically eliminated it. Adults get it, too, even if they

were vaccinated in childhood. The vaccine loses its power in five to 10 years. Booster shots are necessary to shield people from the bacterium that causes the illness.

The typical course of whooping cough in a youngster consists of a week where the child appears to have cold symptoms. Then the child experiences explosions of a hacking cough that can be so violent that the child vomits after coughing. When the cough calms and the child takes a deep breath in, a high-pitched whooping sound is heard. The cough disappears gradually in a month. When treated early with the antibiotics erythromycin or azithromycin, the course of the infection is shortened.

Adult whooping cough is different. No whooping sounds are made. Adults cough and cough, and may do so for months. They are usually seen far too late for antibiotics to do any good. However, the antibiotics are prescribed to stop the spread of the whooping cough bacterium.

Whooping cough is making a resurgence and spreading across the country. Some infants have died from it. One reason is that many parents have opted to not have their children immunized out of fear of vaccine complications. Vaccines have been one of medicine’s greatest achievement in prevention of diseases. Fear of them is unsound and dangerous. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: On seven occasions, I have had severe pain in my right big toe. It hurts so bad that I feel like going to the emergency room, but I feel stupid about going for toe pain.

My uncle has gout and diabetes. Can you have gout without having diabetes? What should I do?

-- J.P. ANSWER: At your next attack, you should go to a doctor immediately. You can have gout without having diabetes. They’re not related.

The pain of gout is severe. You are not the least bit stupid for seeking relief from it. The attacks you have sound like gout. You’ve had seven attacks; you’re likely to have more. You can obtain effective medicine to stop them.

Roasting the eggplant, pepper and onion for this dish may take a little longer than top-ofthe-range cooking, but it’s low-maintenance, and the resulting rich flavor is worth it.

The whole family will love this new take on ziti.

1 medium (about 1 1/2 pounds) eggplant, cut into 1-inch cubes 1 medium red pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 large red onion, cut into 1-inch chunks 2 cloves garlic, crushed with garlic press 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper Salt 1 pint red and/or yellow cherry tomatoes, each cut in half 1 cup (loosely packed) fresh basil leaves, coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 package (16 ounces) rotelle or fusilli pasta Fresh basil leaves for garnish 1. Preheat oven to 450 F. In large roasting pan (17 by 11 1/2-inches) or 15 1/2 by 10 1/2-inch jelly-roll pan, toss eggplant, red pepper, onion, garlic, oil, black pepper and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt until vegetables are well-coated.

2. Roast vegetables 35 to 40 minutes or until tender and lightly browned, stirring occasionally.

3. In large bowl, toss tomatoes with chopped basil and vinegar; set aside to allow flavors to develop.

4. Meanwhile, heat large saucepot of salted water to boiling over high heat. Add pasta and cook as label directs.

5. When pasta has cooked to desired doneness, remove 1/4 cup pasta cooking water and reserve. Drain pasta. Add pasta, roasted vegetables and reserved cooking water to tomatoes in bowl; toss well to distribute vegetables. Garnish each serving with basil leaves. Serves 4.

Stir in tomatoes with their juice; heat to boiling, breaking up tomatoes with side of spoon. Return sausage to skillet. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer about 5 minutes longer.

4. Drain pasta; return to saucepot. Add sausage mixture; toss well. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese if you like.

By JoAnn Derson • When packing cookies in a single layer, I trace the shape of my container on parchment paper using the lid as a template. It’s pretty easy, and it fits exactly.

• Keep a small wastepaper basket or shredder near your home’s entrance, if possible. You can get rid of paper items you don’t need -think, junk mail -- before it even makes it into the house. This is especially important if you tend to let things pile up, like I do! -- R.F. in Louisiana • For scratch paper, I use the back side of my kids’ extra art pages. We choose the best to display, then they chop up the rest into small booklets, which they staple at the top. And we have notepads! -- M.L. in Iowa • Keep a map or globe in your family or TV room. This way, when a place is mentioned on the news or in another program, you can find it quickly on the map. This is a great thing to do with kids, but it’s handy and worthwhile for anyone. M.A., via email • If you have a very stinky trash can, scrub it with a paste made from baking soda and just a bit of water. It works as a mild abrasive. Then fill a spray bottle with plain white vinegar and spray. It should foam for a moment. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse well with hot water. Clean and deodorized!

• We have large buckets that we use to store toys on our back porch. It seems that whenever we’d touch the buckets to get a toy out, a horde of mosquitoes would erupt. There’s no water, so we didn’t know what to do. And we didn’t want to douse it with chemicals, as it’s filled with kid stuff. A neighbor suggested we put a few dryer sheets in each one, and they really have worked. I guess the bugs don’t like the smell!

By Samantha Mazzotta Clearing Away Wasps Q: Checking out the eaves last week, I saw several small wasp nests tucked into the more sheltered corners. What’s the best way to get rid of these nests?

-- Charlie L. in South Carolina A: There are a few ways to remove those small wasp nests from the exterior of your house, and the quicker, the better. Wasps could possibly begin extending the nests inside the walls if they’re not dealt with. In fact, you’ll want to check the attic or storage space above the eaves, as well as crawlspaces under the house, for evidence of wasps before starting the removal.

To remove the wasp nest, make sure the kids and pets are inside to prevent possible stings from angry wasps. Wear long sleeves, pants, work gloves and sturdy shoes to protect yourself. And of course, if you have an allergy to bee stings, don’t clear the nests yourself; call in a pest-control service.

The most effective way to get rid of the nests and reduce the chances of the wasps coming back is to use a chemical spray. Wait until dusk, when the wasps have returned to the nests, then spray according to the directions on the product. You may have to wait up to a week for all activity in the nests to subside; then you can climb up to the eaves and carefully pull off the nests.

An all-natural method for wasp removal is to gear up (cover all your skin, put protective netting over your face, and have an escape route) and spray each nest with a jet of water from your garden hose. This doesn’t kill the wasps, and you’ll probably see them building nests again in fall or spring.

What if you found that the wasps have gotten inside your home’s siding during your initial survey? You’ll probably want to stick with the chemical spray of the outside nests (not your interior walls) in order to kill them. One of my readers recommended using a wet/dry vacuum with a hose attachment to suck up as many wasps from their entry/exit point as possible. If neither of these methods eradicate the wasps, contact a pest-control service.

HOME TIP: Found a wasp’s nest in a tree at the far end of the yard? Consult a pest-control service before removing it, as the displaced wasps could simply move over to your house.

Based on the l959 Disney feature cartoon, this will be live action from the witch’s point of view, with possibly Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora/Briar Rose.

Angelina views “Maleficent” not as an evil queen, but as misunderstood. “I hope in the end you see a woman who’s capable of being many things and just protects herself and is aggressive. It doesn’t mean she can’t have other, warmer qualities. She’s a great person.

She’s not perfect; she’s far from perfect.”

Well, that should be an interesting take on a big bad witch ... warm qualities and a great person!

Julia Roberts goes right from her publicity tour for “Mirror, Mirror” into “August: Osage County,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway show now becoming a movie. She plays Meryl Streep’s daughter, who tries to overcome certain differences when her drugaddicted mother goes missing. Then, Julia

takes on “The Normal Heart,” another play being made into a film.

She’ll be surrounded by top-notch actors such as Jim Parsons (of “The Big Bang Theory”), Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo, “30 Rock” Emmy winner Alec Baldwin, and “White Collar” hunk Matt Bomer. It’s the story of a gay activist trying to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS during the early l980s. At one time, Barbra Streisand owned the screen rights and worked with author Larry Kramer to come up with a script, but couldn’t agree on script changes and gave up. *** Shame on HBO for cancelling “Luck.” The cable network was so excited to have Oscarwinning actor Dustin Hoffman in its stable that it renewed the show for a second season after it drew critical acclaim and 1.1 million viewers for its premiere. But HBO was disappointed when “Luck” attracted only 500,000 viewers thereafter. In the early part of the season, two horses were injured during racing scenes and had to be put down.

Then, a third horse reared back while going to the stable, hit its head on a rock and was put down as well.

opportunity to cancel the show. The California Horse Racing Board’s equine medical director, Dr. Rick Arthur, was quoted as saying, “Horse fatalities are not uncommon at the race track. --Walk more! You can burn 100 calories for every mile walked, and for every mile you don’t drive you can prevent a pound of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere.

--Buy in bulk. You’ll save and money and reduce the amount of packaging that has to go into the recycle bin or the trash.

--Use cloth whenever possible. Americans consume one-third of the world’s annual paper production, so think twice before you purchase paper towels or you print something from the computer.

--Take your own bags to the farmer’s market or grocery store. There is no need to purchase new bags, just re-use the ones from your last trip or buy reusable cloth bags. (An exception would be the bags that meat was packaged in. Meat and poultry can harbor bacteria, so those bags should be thrown out).

So, fill your bag full of your favorite fresh vegetables and make this delicious recipe for Roasted Vegetables with Tofu Topping.

ROASTED VEGETABLES WITH TOFU TOPPING

3 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, halved lengthwise and thickly sliced lengthwise 2 large red or yellow bell peppers, cored, ribs removed and sliced 1/2 pound fresh asparagus spears, tough ends trimmed and discarded 1 large zucchini, diced 1 large carrot, diced 2 large tomatoes, thickly sliced 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon hot sauce 1/2 tablespoon honey For topping: 2 cups whole wheat Panko breadcrumbs or dried breadcrumbs 7 ounces firm tofu, drained but not squeezed dry, crumbled 1/2 cup (3 ounces) finely grated ParmigianoReggiano 1/2 cup (3 ounces) Pepper Jack cheese, shredded 8 basil leaves, sliced into fine ribbons, or 2 teaspoons dried basil, crumbled 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano, crumbled 1 teaspoon paprika 1 garlic clove, minced 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons olive oil 1. Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 400 F. 2. Place a large, 12-by-17 rimmed baking sheet into the oven to heat.

3. Rinse and drain vegetables, shaking

colander to remove any remaining water. In a large bowl, mix together olive oil, onions, bell peppers, asparagus, zucchini, carrots, tomatoes, garlic, soy sauce, salt, pepper, hot sauce and honey until well-combined. Carefully spread vegetables on the hot baking sheet in an even layer. Bake for 30 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix together breadcrumbs, tofu, cheeses, basil leaves, oregano, paprika, garlic, salt and pepper until well-combined. Alternatively, mash ingredients together in a large bowl with a potato masher.

5. Remove vegetables from oven. Sprinkle tofu mixture over vegetables in an even layer.

Drizzle topping with the olive oil. Continue baking, uncovered, until topping is golden brown and vegetables are heated through and tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Serves 6 to 8.

Although singing the oratorio has become a Christmas tradition, the Messiah received its world premiere during the Christian season of Lent. Handel composed the score for Messiah in just 24 days.

Getting the Poop on Poop-Eating DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read an article that said to use Super B complex to stop stool eating in dogs. Have you heard of this? My veterinarian has not. If so, what is the dosage? The article I read referred to golden retrievers, but my dogs weigh 35 to 45 pounds. I don’t want to overdose them. -- Dianne E., via email DEAR DIANNE: Poop-eating, known scientifically as copraphagia, is a troublesome habit in which dogs will sniff and eat their own stools or those of other animals. As you can imagine, this behavior is not only disgusting but potentially unhealthy.

And it sure makes you not want to kiss your dog.

Copraphagia is such a big problem that there are entire websites devoted to it. Vernon Lee’s dogpoopdiet.com is one such site. It’s clearly laid out

and offers plenty of information both on possible causes of the behavior -- from health issues to attentionseeking -- and ways to deter it.

As far as giving your dog a B complex supplement, it appears to address the possibility that a dog is not getting enough of certain nutrients, including vitamin B, which is leading to his behavior. B vitamins are found naturally in foods like liver, kidney, heart, eggs and kelp, and in ingredients like yeast and wheat germ. Pet stores and health-food stores both sell B complex supplements for both humans and dogs.

The vitamin supplement is watersoluble and tends to break down quickly when exposed to air or water, so according to some advocates, an overdose is unlikely. However, you should check dosage rates for your dogs through their vet, or a holistic practitioner, or by searching on the Internet or visiting manufacturers websites for recommended amounts.
