Game On! Young hockey buffs had an opportunity to work on their stick handling skills at the Pincher Creek Road Hockey Festival held Saturday, Sept. 10.

The event was open to all youngsters, whether involved in minor hockey or not, and organizers were thrilled to have about 140 boys and girls participate in the first-time event.

My Little Corner

I’ve been called an opinionated person a time or two in my life, and certainly have my own interpretation of many things! Even so, I have chosen to reserve only a little corner of the paper for those thoughts of the publisher/editor.

This past week has flown by as we prepared for the debut issue of Shootin’ the Breeze. I’ve spent time throughout the distribution area meeting business owners and chatting with people on the street about what we’re doing.

Most of the feedback has been positive, although not 100 per cent of course!

Through my travels and research in the past few months I’ve been impressed by the neat shops, the fascinating people,

and the variety of events offered in the region that we have chosen to cover.

Last week I overheard one shopkeeper describe himself as “a husband’s dream” in reference to the variety of items on his shelves to appeal to women, and visited with a business owner and his daughter who really knew how to shoot the breeze!

I learned how real chocolate is made, and came across many interesting story ideas.

I felt heartsick for the Hebert family of Sparwood and thrilled for them when Kienan was returned home. I watched enthusiastic kids play street hockey for hours despite the heat, and now can’t wait to see what next week brings!

A spaghetti supper with sides of caesar salad, bread and dessert will be held at the library from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sept 23.

A Change of Plan for our Website

Robert Burns knew it back in 1786 when he penned his poem “To a Mouse.” The poem is an apology to a mouse after Burns discovers that he has upturned the rodent’s nest while ploughing a field. ... What Burns knew, and is telling the mouse, is that he isn’t alone, and that the best laid plans of mice and men often go wrong.

We’ve experienced a bit of this proverbial grief in the past week at Mountainside News, and it has led to a slight change in plans for our online updates.

We have been very pleased to see that www.mountainsidenews.ca has received a significant amount of traffic this past week.

Running into a few technical glitches wasn’t entirely unexpected. However,

we didn’t expect to have any difficulty with the paper reading application.

Darren and Cary have been working daily to get the functionality of the paper reader doing all of the things that we were able to have it do during our offline trial runs!

We have also discovered that a few people with dial-up internet connections and iPads are having issues viewing the online paper. Cary has been dealing directly with those having issues. If you have found yourself in the same boat please email him at cary@mountainsidenews.ca.

It all comes back to those best laid schemes ...

To put the best product out to our readers at all times, regardless of any mishaps that may come our way, the full copy of our Wednesday print edition will be online by 9 a.m. on Wednesday mornings, and the updates will be posted Monday and Friday.

Fernie residents have an opportunity to learn how to can on Sept. 21.

At this program sponsored by the Elk Valley branch of Wildsight, participants will learn about food storage, and preserving techniques such as dehydrating, freezing and canning.

The workshop will run from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Fernie Community Centre, located at 901 6th Avenue.

Everyone will have something to take home from this hands-on workshop.

In partnership with Hi-Tek Hockey of Lethbridge, the Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey Association is offering a player development skills clinic at the Coleman Sports Complex on Sept. 24 and 25.

The clinic is open to members of the Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey Association as well as to members of surrounding minor hockey associations.

Pre-novice to midget level players will have the opportunity to work on stick handling, passing, shooting, skating, checking confidence, and preseason conditioning.

Four ice sessions are included for all players.

The fee for the clinic is $65 for local members, and $75 for members of other minor hockey associations.

The registration deadline is Sept. 20.

Young Parkyn McNab Grand Opening

The official grand opening of their new Pincher Creek location was celebrated by ypm Chartered Accountants on Sept. 15.

Everyone in the community was welcome to attend the affair which included a full lunch, coffee, treats and door prizes.

Marketing co-ordinator Karly Patrick of the Lethbridge office was pleased with the good turnout for the drop in event, and saw it as “a good opportunity to mix and mingle with clients and friends in the community.”

Food Drive Residents of Pincher Creek can expect to find plastic bags hanging on their doorknobs on Sept. 21.

The bags are being distributed in advance of the one day food drive being held by the local food bank on Sept. 24.

A flyer inside each bag suggests items that are suitable for donation.

Residents can leave the bags on their doorsteps on Sept. 24 and they will be picked up by food bank volunteers between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Bar U Chore Horse Competition The Bar U Ranch at Longview held their annual chore horse competition on Sept. 11.

The association’s website offered a “glimpse back in time to when horsepower meant exactly that. When teams of draft horses pulled mowers, rakes, hay wagons, and ploughs breaking the earth.”

The event was sponsored by the Friends of the Bar U Ranch, Sun Country and the Eagle Radio Stations, and Alberta Carriage Supply.

The weekend was full of heavy horse action with a plowing demonstration on Friday and a beginner driving clinic on Saturday.

Taking first place in the Sunday competition was Dwight Beard of Indus, with Tom Christensen of Standard coming in second. Last year’s champion, Art Hopp of Patricia, placed third.

Final Bomber Run-up Sept. 17 saw the final running of the Lancaster bomber’s two overhauled starboard Rolls Royce Merlin engines for the 2011 season.

The bomber is located at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton, and has a colourful history.

Of the 7,377 Lancasters built for use in the Second World War, more than half were lost in action.

With only 23 Lancasters left in the world, it’s impressive to have one accessible so close to home.
