Last Burst of Summer Warmer than average temperatures were enjoyed by everyone this past weekend.

With the mountains barely visible in the background, this harvested field near Glenwood could be a picture taken on the Prairies.

Waterton Park was teeming with activity as people came out to enjoy the sunshine and the 30 degree weather.

Campgrounds had large numbers of visitors enjoying the last burst of summer weather before fall.

Those with convertibles had fabulous conditions to cruise with the top down all weekend.

My Little Corner

What a hectic week!

I felt somewhat like Bad Luck Schleprock of the Flintstones as we ran into a series of obstacles during production of the first issue of Shootin’ the Breeze.

Amid the chaos, interruptions and technical issues we managed to have a few laughs and print a first issue that we are proud of.

It was wonderful to receive supportive emails from strangers over the weekend letting us know that our efforts have been positively received and appreciated.

A quick trip to Saskatchewan for a family affair on the weekend means that I’m still bleary-eyed and sleep deprived,

but also refreshed and eager to see what’s around the next corner.

The number of people visiting the website at www.mountainsidenews.ca has also been a positive indication that we are on the right track.

My apologies to those looking for the Sept. 19 online update! We’ve had some issues with the online paper reader and while sorting that out it made sense to look ahead to the Tuesday edition.

From this point forward, the online updated papers will be posted on Mondays and Fridays as well as the print edition being posted on Wednesdays.

Pincher Creek Co-op Gas Bar Grand Opening Co-op employee Janet Taylor grins as she snips the red ribbon at the grand opening ceremony of the Pincher Creek Co-op Gas Bar last Friday.

Janet is the third generation of her family to be involved with the local Co-op. Her mother Joyce is on the current board of directors, and her grandfather was a board member when the Co-op mall opened. Janet smiles again when sharing that she has “great people to work with” and that the Co-op “feels like family.”

Reeve Rod Cyr of the MD of Pincher Creek commented that the Co-op has come a long way over time and continues to grow. Pincher Creek Mayor Ernie Olsen, expressed pride on behalf of the community toward a local business that is making good and improving.

Alberta Arts Days – a celebration of culture, heritage, artistic diversity and provincial pride – will run Sept.

30 to Oct. 2.

Provincially-owned historic sites and museums will offer free admission and special arts programming all three days. The sites include Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, Government House, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Lougheed House, Oil Sands Discovery Centre, Provincial Archives of Alberta, Remington Carriage Museum, Reynolds Alberta Museum, Royal Alberta Museum, Royal Tyrrell Museum and Rutherford House.

Fort Macleod – through the combined efforts of the Fort Macleod Allied Arts Council, the Empress Theatre and the Fort Museum – was selected by Alberta Culture and Community Spirit as one of the five celebration sites to receive a $20,000 grant to cover expenses for the weekend.

A free shuttle bus will run from the parking lot behind the Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod to HeadSmashed-In Buffalo Jump.

With free events taking place all over the province, you’ll want to be sure to take in those happening in your own community and area.

Emergency Services Pincher Creek Emergency Services members responded to an alarm at Whispering Winds on Sept. 22.

Residents were evacuated for approximately an hour while responders established that there was no fire and that the undefined problem was linked to the alarms and sprinkler system.

The team has also responded to two harvest related fire starts recently.

With the dry, hot weather experienced lately in the region, fires can start easily and spread rapidly.

In both cases, the farmers reacted quickly, and the fires were contained

when the emergency crew arrived.

Farmers are encouraged to be prepared by having fire equipment handy and a water truck in the field. Quick response to a fire makes a big difference in the outcome.

Pincher Creek Emergency Services are made up of approximately 30 members and are looking for more volunteers. Many of the members are cross-trained and might be fighting a fire one day and driving an ambulance the next.
