Jodie Dunbar and Chelsea Stokke have a busy year ahead of them as queens of the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo. Jodie and Chelsea will represent the rodeo and promote the Town of Pincher Creek at various Alberta rodeos including the Calgary Stampede, parades, agriculture society events and other community events.

The young women went through a full day of judging prior to the rodeo last August. Criteria included horsemanship skills, public speaking, personality, poise, appearance and overall suitability.

Seventeen-year-old Chelsea has been riding horses on the family ranch since she was about two years old.

The highlight of Chelsea’s competitive year was earning a spot in the Canadian Finals Ranch Roping

Competition.

Chelsea describes her role as Little Miss Rodeo as “amazing,” and her easy smile shows that she is comfortable in the spotlight and enjoying the opportunity to meet many new people.

To stay in top rodeo form, Chelsea spends many hours with her horse Lace. Chelsea rides and trains the horse at least two hours a day to ensure Lace stays in shape and stays under Chelsea’s control.

Chelsea felt the riding skills portion of the Little Miss Rodeo competition was the most challenging event, but her hours with Lace paid off.

A Grade 12 student at Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek, Chelsea is unsure of future plans with the exception of putting her hat in the ring for the Miss Rodeo title next year.

Currently completing a bachelor of science degree in agriculture management and GIS, the University of Lethbridge student comes home to Twin Butte every weekend to help out at the family ranch.

Just as her grandfather raised and trained horses, Jodie has trained her horse from a filly and hopes to be able to compete with her soon.

Jodie giggles when sharing that the role is “definitely new” to her, but already can’t share enough about what a positive experience it has been.

She describes herself as one “not

to really worry about makeup and hair” every day, so found that part of the competition a bit intimidating.

Her confidence shows, though, as she smiles broadly for the camera.

Jodie’s pride is also evident as she speaks about her role as a spokesperson “not only for the rodeo, but for the rural way of life.”

She is enthusiastic about promoting agriculture and hopes to start her own business, upon convocation, using her GIS skills to make maps for farmers and to offer economic advisory services.

Through her role as Miss Rodeo, Jodie hopes to continue developing her public speaking skills and is interested to see if the exposure brings some career opportunities her way.

Angels within us gives a helping hand Angels Within Us began as a group of friends working together to help Kris Gilmore of Pincher Creek recover costs incurred last year when undergoing liberation treatment for Multiple Sclerosis in Costa Rica.

The group knew they could reach out to the greater community, and planned a fundraising dinner that included live and silent auctions, music and dancing, and a draw for a vehicle donated by Westcastle Motors.

The event raised just over $100,000, exceeding expectations and leaving the Angels feeling truly blessed.

First to benefit from the funds raised were the Parkin family. Coleen Parkin needed to make an emergency trip to New Zealand after her daughter Alyssa was in an accident. Angels Within Us Friends of the Library

Kris and Trevor Gilmore, founders of Angels Within Us, recouped a portion of the cost of Kris’s out-of-country medical treatment, as the second beneficiaries of the fund.

In August, the group purchased a specialized bed for Jodi Duffield based on a recommendation from Janet Gascoyne, a physiotherapist at the Pincher Creek hospital.

The most recent recipient of financial assistance from the group is Luke Weatherill who has incurred significant expense travelling to Calgary for treatment of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Six musicians, originally from three counties in Ireland, stepped onto the stage and immediately launched into song.

Strains of “The Last of the Irish Rover” were somewhat audible over the cheers and applause of the crowd at Fort Macleod’s Empress Theatre on Sept. 25.

It was impossible not to smile as the Irish Rovers shared their musical charm and invited you to join in the fun. Toes were tapping and hands were clapping for the entire two-hour show, and the crowd didn’t need to be invited to sing along with the band’s old favourites.

The oldies were mixed in with songs from the group’s new DVD, including Gracehill Fair, which received song of the year honours at the 2011 VIMAs at the band’s home base of Vancouver.

Could’ve Been the Whiskey members, the group is on tour with 23 gigs in 25 days – not bad for a bunch of guys who put out their first album in 1966!

The Irish Rovers are best known for their rollicking beer and whiskey drinking songs. They can instantly cast silence on an audience with their ballads and tight harmonies, and then have you clapping your hands and stomping your feet a minute later in a seamless transition.

The audience included young and old, and the full house was treated to a spectacular show.

“Mari’s Wedding” earned the strongest audience response in the first half, and the audience didn’t hesitate to sing along with “The Deep Blue Sea.” Each musician had an opportunity to showcase his individual capabilities. The talents of each band member are amazing on their own, but most

impressive when blended with the group to create the Irish Rovers’ distinctive sound.

The banter of the musicians on stage was entertaining and gave them a wee break, while also giving the audience a moment if their hands were sore from clapping.

Music bonds itself to memories, and during the intermission there were many lively conversations based on forgotten events and times that had been brought back to life by the music.

The audience needed no prompting to sing along to “The Unicorn.” It makes you wonder how many times the Rovers have sung those magical lyrics.

“Wasn’t That a Party” was the final song prior to a standing ovation.

The Rovers finished up with a rousing version of “Drunken Sailor.” It wasn’t technically an encore as Ian Millar quipped, “We were going to do another one anyway!”

Matthew Halton Academic Awards Students, parents and staff of Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek gathered Sept. 21 to celebrate student achievements in academics.

Alexandra Morgan opened the evening by leading “O Canada,” and also shared her vocal rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Opening remarks were made by Susan Robinson, chair of the awards committee, and by principal Sandy Treit. From the beginning of the evening to its close, the pride in all student accomplishments was apparent through the comments and facial expressions of school staff and family members present.

Award guidelines have been developed over time by students, parents and school staff in a manner that recognizes as many worthy students as possible within defined criteria.

Special merit awards are available based on teacher nominations for students who have shown an improvement in performance, consistent effort, a positive attitude, or who have overcome disadvantages while maintaining academic standing.

The challenge of maintaining honours standing in high school was compared to having a part-time job.

Students must be willing to put in

dedicated time outside of school hours to achieve honours standards.

In return, these students become eligible for a variety of scholarships and post-secondary funding, including up to $2,500 by realizing marks of 80 per cent or higher in grades 10, 11 and 12 through the Arthur Rutherford Scholarship.

A slide show entitled “A Tribute to Learning” elicited giggles and smiles from the audience. Micaela Pura was the creator of the audio-visual display that shared a year of MHHS highlights.

Blairmore Centennial and CNP Reunion

Fred Bradley, chairman of the Crowsnest Pass reunion committee, had a busy day last Saturday doing everything from serving centennial cake to having his beard judged.

The reunion attracted 250 guests, and 350 people attended the Saturday evening gala.

Three years of planning went into the affair which had its kickoff July 17 when a CPR steam train stopped in the Crowsnest Pass.

The events Sept. 23 to 25 tied in with M.Arty’s Market, hosted by the Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Council, and the Harvest of Memories gala, held by the Crowsnest Pass Historical Society.

Visitors and residents could also ride in horse-drawn wagons, check out the old fire engine or ride the model train at the park.

Connie (Rejman) Fowle was born in Coleman and left in 1961. She

returns each summer from Calgary to visit with family and friends during Rum Runner Days, and also attends the CNP reunions in Calgary.

Connie had high praise for the bus tour and said this reunion was “prov-

ing to be just as good” as the Coleman Centennial.

The Crowsnest Museum was bustling all day and was a meeting place for many visitors and friends.

Rockin’ Roddy Roderick Watt of Waterton played a two-hour acoustic set at the Twin Butte General Store Sept. 23 featuring original music from his two CDs along with a handful of cover tunes.

Through most of the performance his eyes were closed and he was lost in the songs. His fingers followed well known patterns on the fret board of his Martin guitar without a slip.

Roddy’s rapport with the audience was easy and it was apparent they were familiar with both the performer and the driving rhythm of his music.

One minute Roddy was lost in an original ballad and the next belting out Tom Cochrane’s “No Regrets.” The dynamic range in his vocals kept people focused on the lyrics.
