My Little Corner It’s hard to believe that this is our fourth edition of Shootin’ the Breeze!

I grew up in northeastern Saskatchewan, so even after two years in Pincher Creek I am still very much in awe of the mountains. On Saturday afternoon the view from the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre was stunning.

The clouds surrounded the mountain top and if my arms were just a wee bit longer I think I would have been able to reach out and touch them.

A phone conversation Tuesday with Tara Bishoff of Claresholm made me giggle and blush, and she teased me a bit about my embarrassment immediately.

Tara is the coordinator of the Boob Tour this weekend in Stavely which promises to be hilarious while serving a great cause.

Ticket sales have been slow, so we’ve jumped on board to support the cause. We’re selling tickets at the Mountainside News office at 695 Main Street in Pincher Creek.

I never imagined using the word boobs in print, but there are times when a little bit of shock value can promote a great event.

Boob Tour

Dean Brody, Aaron Lines and Deric Ruttan performed to a packed house Sept. 28 on the Claresholm stop of the CMT Hitlist Tour. The fifth annual gala evening was a fundraiser for the Claresholm and District Health Foundation.

The night began with wine and cheese, followed by a four-course meal prepared by Red Seal Chef Keith Carlson of Roy’s Place in Claresholm, and finished off with the Canadian country music solo acts.

Foundation co-ordinator Tara Bishoff was “very pleased” with the number of attendees and said that “even the rockers” enjoyed the outstanding entertainment.

Over $10,000 was raised, which will be used for the purchase of treatment chairs, IV poles and an audioscope to benefit residents of Claresholm, Granum, Stavely and other communities that use Claresholm health services.

Standard Life presented a cheque for $15,000, which covers the complete cost of a fetal heart monitor.

promoting comedy and the power of laughter.

James Uloth created the I Love Boobs logo in 2007, and in 2010 launched the Boob Tour with a group of fellow comedians.

Five professional comedians are shooting for laughs on Oct. 8 at Stavely Community Centre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the local Elks club is providing beef on a bun, which is included in the $30 ticket price.

Tara feels that residents are very fortunate to have this calibre of talent make a trip to the area, and hopes to see a strong show of support from Stavely and surrounding communities.

Ruger to the rescue!

Ruger is a three-year-old Belgian Shepherd with a special job – he’s a certified rescue dog. Cindy Mauthe of Pincher Creek is Ruger’s owner and partner in this endeavour.

The duo trains twice weekly in Lethbridge, where they practise search and rescue fundamentals, GPS techniques, evidence handling, dog scent training, and first aid.

Ruger is the only dog in the Pincher Creek area certified by the Canadian Search Dog Association, and both master and canine can be proud of their achievements.

The motto of the CSDA is “Fide Canem,” which is Latin for “trust the dog.”

This is the first thing new handlers must learn, and the basis of rescue dog training.

The primary goal of the CSDA is to help save lives, and active team members are ready to respond 24 hours a day. This service is provided at no cost to the organizations and communities served.

The CSDA is a non-profit group of volunteers who give their time, energy and resources to carry out three main objectives: • to generate a group of trained search workers and search dogs to aid the RCMP and other authorized tasking agencies in their search for lost or missing persons and/or evidence; • to supply the handlers and their dogs with the resources necessary to enable them to provide optimum assistance to the tasking agency; • to operate a province-wide organization to coordinate and develop these services.

Dogs and handlers are trained over a one- to two-year period, with the amount of time required to complete certification depending on the aptitude and dedication of both.

test last May. Testing included his demonstration of skill in finding a person, searching a ditch, finding articles, agility and obedience.

Cindy and Ruger are working toward Level 2 certification next year.

This level also includes a back alley search and a small article search.

Areas of specialization can include human remains, water and disaster searches. Cindy plans to train Ruger for human remains and water searches. She explains that while this may sound like a distasteful line of work, “if my family member was missing I would want them back for closure if they were deceased.”

The pair demonstrated search techniques at the Pincher Creek Search and Rescue Society annual barbecue on Sept. 22.

Siblings Austin and Haley Bruder hid in the bushes along the creek while younger sister Darilyn acted as searcher with Cindy and Ruger.

The dog moved quickly as they crisscrossed through the parking

lot and around the side of the fire hall.

With little wind that evening, Ruger kept his nose fairly close to the ground as he searched for the strongest human scents.

Haley was recovered quickly, and Ruger received his reward of playtime with his rope toy.

Austin was a bit trickier to find in his spot, downwind near the water.

He explained that he had read a book about how a cat hunted, which gave him some good ideas for his hiding spot.

Ruger was treated again to some play as his reward, this time with Austin.

Ruger has been involved in searches for a missing man at Beauvais Lake and a missing boy in Lethbridge.

Fortunately both of these stories had happy endings.

With a lifetime of searching ahead of him, Ruger and Cindy will have an opportunity to help save other lives.

Running in the rain Husband and wife Ryan and Laura Cain of Cranbrook took top honours in the men’s and women’s solo events Sunday at the Fernie half marathon.

Ryan’s time of 1 hour 19 minutes 29 seconds set a new men’s course record. Jeff Murray of Invermere followed him at 1:27:26.64, with Christopher Fisher of Bogota, Colombia hot on his heels at 1:27:26.65.

Laura led the ladies with a time of 1:37:43 for her solo effort. Jacqui van Zyl of Marysville was less than a minute and a half behind her at 1:39:00, and Danielle Burki of Kimberley crossed the line close behind at 1:40:29.

A record 346 participants took off running at the half marathon, which also included categories for threerunner relay events for men, women, mixed teams and student trios.

The 21-kilometre run began at Fernie’s Annex Park, wound along the Elk River and finished back at the park.

The weather added to the challenge of the day, with sunny moments mixed with pouring rain. One runner described herself as soaked through to her underwear by the time the race was finished!

Awards were presented to the top three individual runners and to the first place teams.

A trio of women had the best team run time – Nadyia Fry and Stacie Carrigan of Fairmont, along with Abi Moore of Fernie, crossed the finish line at 1:27:31.

Fernie Academy students Jared Sillem, Jacob Blair and Evan Traverse completed the run at 1:44:51 in the all-student category, while Neil Longhurst and two of his high school running students, John Weaver and Storm Bakkila from Eureka, finished with a time of 1:43:02 in the men’s relay. This was originally an all-student team, but when one student misplaced his birth certificate and was unable to cross the border from Montana to British Columbia, coach Longhurst pulled on his own running shoes.

During the run, participants had the opportunity to take in 30-minute information sessions. Athletic therapist Kayla Neufeld spoke about injuries – when it’s okay to self-treat and when to get help.

According to one employee, the Great Canadian Barn Dance at Hill Spring is a half hour from everywhere – a half hour from Fort Macleod, a half hour from Cardston, a half hour from Waterton, or a half hour from Pincher Creek – and people flock there every weekend.

There are many options to choose from when you visit the GCBD. If you like, you can go for dinner, dancing, or both, and head home with your tired feet the same evening. You can also choose to spend the night in a bed and breakfast room, or spend the whole weekend in an RV site or at the campground. Some people love it so much they have cabins and residences along the water’s edge!

The summer season wrapped up Sept. 24 with a first-time harvest festival. The day was filled with activities for all ages, including an ice cream social and jam session followed by potato sack races, an old-fashioned tug of war, a scarecrow beauty pageant and a corn shucking contest.

After a traditional roast beef dinner, guests had time to ride in the hay wagon, check out Granny’s Gift Shop, visit, or simply relax and enjoy the amazing sunset over the lake.

Over 120 people enjoyed the harvest festival, and more arrived later on just to dance.

Two-steppers come from all over to dance to the tunes of the Barn Dance All Star Band featuring the Kunkel family, and some find it almost an addiction after their first visit.

The moment the band started to play, the dance floor was packed! DJ Rockin’ Ronnie had the crowd moving and provided instruction for dancers of all levels at the beginning of the evening. There were none of those uncomfortable lulls while waiting for the party to get started – when the music was playing, the people were dancing.

Fiddle player Ronan Kunkel is the youngest member of the family band.

He was joined by his father Trevor on electric guitar, and grandfather Larry on electric bass.

If you recall Buck Shot and Benny the Bear then you will recognize Ron Barge as keyboard player for the band.

John from Okotoks was a guest musician on steel guitar, on the evening of our visit.

Later in the evening, Candy and Annie, otherwise known as the barn dance sweethearts, added their vocal talents to the mix.

No chance against the mountain It’s been 108 years since 90 million tons of limestone crashed down Turtle Mountain in the middle of the night. The massive rockslide buried part of the town of Frank and killed approximately 70 of the 600 residents.

Driving through the high piles of boulders lining Highway 3, it’s difficult to fathom what the experience was like for Frank’s residents. The roar must have been deafening for the 90 seconds it took the rocks to fall.

Imagine the terror of awakening to that in the dark, and the horror of the sight upon daylight.

This is the experience most of us envision when we see the rocky graves and devastation left behind from April 29, 1903.

What doesn’t immediately come to mind is the experience of the coal miners trapped inside Turtle Mountain that night.

This experience was explored and shared in the one-act play “If By Chance,” performed last Saturday and Sunday at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.

By lantern light, two actors shared the story of 17 miners trapped by the slide.

One miner comments that once they’re inside the mountain they can’t tell whether it’s night or day.

Two miners explore their personal similarities and differences as they go about the tasks of the night. When the side of the mountain falls away, they find the main shaft blocked and the lower entrance flooding. The struggle between panic and calm begins.

Stephanie Hamilton and Chris Weber provided insight into the hours that 17 coal miners spent trapped under the rock slide when Turtle Mountain gave way. Both are employees of the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre.

It is not only a battle between the men and the mountain, but also between their own feelings of determination, frustration, hope and fear.

One miner claims “you ain’t got no chance against a mountain,” while the other reminds him there are reasons to keep digging.

A coal seam presents a glimmer of hope and they work with their pick axes, taking turns and battling their emotional turmoil.

After 14 hours they break through to the surface and the light of day.

Unfortunately, it’s to the sight of one miner’s home, buried in the rubble and devastation.

The play was written by Robert Clinton and is performed periodi-

cally at the centre.

Chris Weber and Stephanie Hamilton gave a great show this past weekend. Both are employees of the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre and call the Crowsnest Pass home. Their interpretation of the work was thoughtful and had a strong impact on the audience.

The Frank Slide Interpretive Centre had an “average number of visitors for a free admission weekend,” according to one staff member. By mid-afternoon Saturday, guests from Germany, Brazil, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec and Alberta had already signed the guest book.

The centre is open daily, yearround, and current hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The dance floor didn’t stop moving all night. When the band took a break, the DJ stepped in and kept things going with lively tunes like the Macarena, which prompted some interesting dance moves.

Eighteen-year-old Kaylee Paxman visits the GCBD almost every Saturday during the summer with her mom and her aunt. These three ladies are the Barn Boosters and you can tell how much they love what they do. If you want to learn a few steps they’ll teach you, if you don’t have a partner they’ll dance with you, and if you want to have a great time they’ll gladly join you.

Kaylee explained that part of their volunteer role is to show “you don’t have to have a partner to come,” and that there are many styles of line dancing solo dancers can use while others might be two-stepping.

had just met for the first time but were visiting like old friends. Both couples travelled to spend the weekend, one from Calgary and the other from Edmonton. Both couples visited the barn dance for the first time recently and returned for a second visit. They concur that it’s “a joy to go somewhere where it’s just fun for a reasonable price,” and that they will become regular visitors.

Most impressive were the number of teenagers having a blast on the dance floor. GCBD office manager Annie Shields says the teenage girls are interesting to observe on their visits. Many arrive with “that look,” conveying their annoyance at being forced to come to something they’re not used to. By the end of the weekend, most are asking when they’re coming back.

The Great Canadian Barn Dance is a place that welcomes and embraces everyone. If you are interested in a fun way to spend time with your partner, on your own, or with family and friends, then you should consider a visit.

Chances are, you’ll be back for more.

Banquet set to raise bucks for ducks Saving Canada’s wetlands is serious business, but there’s sure to be plenty of good fun and good food Oct. 15 at the Ducks Unlimited fundraising banquet in Pincher Creek.

Should you attend, you’ll have the chance to show your support – and perhaps some competitive flair – when just the right item catches your eye during the live and silent auctions.

Along with mainstays such as wildlife art prints and duck-themed clothing, popular items with the bidders now include “furniture – like reclining chairs, writing desks, and all kinds of tables,” says Nigel Whittington, chairman of the conservation group’s Pincher Creek chapter.

Local business people provide solid support, donating about half the merchandise for auction. The rest comes

from Ducks Unlimited Canada.

Now in its 29th year, the event usually draws 220 to 240 people, and typically raises between $33,000 and $35,000.

“Money raised in Alberta stays in Alberta,” Nigel says, funding initiatives such as a conservation project along Christie Mines Road, west of Pincher Creek, and studies of threatened species like the northern pintail duck.

Ducks Unlimited Canada aims to protect wetlands and related habitats through conservation programs, scientific research, education and public policy efforts.

“There’s been a shift in emphasis towards wetlands water management and water conservation,” Nigel says.

“It’s a huge benefit – to everything.”

Nigel, one of about 20 volunteers belonging to the Pincher Creek chapter, says his own observations of developmental encroachments into wetland areas sparked a desire to help “preserve what we’ve got before it’s all gone.”

Joining Ducks Unlimited, 19 years ago, “just seemed so right.”

“It’s a good organization,” he says.

“It’s all across Canada, but the heartbeat of Ducks Unlimited is in western Canada.”

The Oct. 15 banquet, at the community hall, opens with cocktails at 6 p.m.

Full pantry The front lawn of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Pincher Creek was bustling with activity Sept. 24 as members of all ages sorted through bags of food coming in by the carload.

This year is the first that church members have taken on the challenge of filling the shelves at the local food bank. The group hung plastic bags on every Pincher Creek doorknob, with a notice suggesting suitable items for donation and directions to leave the bag of items on the front doorstep for pickup, two days later.

Food Bank Continued from page 10 Kevin Provost hadn’t realized how great the need of the food bank was until he took on the position of executive director of the Napi Friendship Association six months ago. Need for the service in the community is very high, but the food bank was forced to close its doors for five days in August because the shelves were bare.

“Wow,” was Kevin’s quiet comment as the first truckload of food arrived at the door.

It took only a moment for him to realize that space would need to be cleared to accommodate what was only the first of five deliveries to be made.

Food bank employees are still sorting the abundance of goods received, and donations are still arriving in the bags left on doors.

Ten days later you can still hear the awe in Kevin’s voice as he describes the event as “amazing!”

Goods come to Pincher Creek from the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, but Kevin explains that you never know what you’re going to get.

Sometimes only one or two of five pallets received are usable. One shipment contained several cases of quail eggs!

Five loads of food this size were contributed to the Pincher Creek Food Bank last weekend.

In contrast, the items that came through the door with the local food drive were all basic items essential for building hampers. Kevin enthusiastically expresses that “this food was amazing!” and that the shelves are now stocked with food that “should last until at least Christmas.”

Kevin adds that it was great to see children as young as three and four helping sort and carry the food, and that he is “so appreciative of the work they did and how well it was organized.”

required, and special circumstances are taken into consideration.

Recipients are entitled to seven uses of the food bank each year. The hampers they receive are pre-packed for families of different sizes and are meant to last for two weeks, but Kevin says that “realistically, it’s three or four days worth of food.”

With the help received from the recent food drive, the group will be able to look at revising policies so they are able to assist more people in need, and allow for a little bit more flexibility.

Donations are accepted year-round at the food bank. Non-perishable goods are required, as are cash donations that are used to buy perishable items like meat for the hampers.

The food bank is unable to accept donations of meat even though community members often have an abundance of wild game to share.

If you would like to donate or help out in any way, the food bank is located at 622 Charlotte Street and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Kevin shares that several people in the community have commented about how well organized the LDS food drive was, and what an easy way it was to donate to a worthy cause.

Gail Tillack summed up the event with three simple words: “It blesses everybody.”

Alberta Arts Days in Fort Macleod The Fort Macleod Allied Arts Council, the Empress Theatre and the Fort Museum received a $20,000 grant from Alberta Culture and Community Spirit to cover expenses of their Alberta Arts Days celebration.

By all accounts, the money was put to wise use, and the community presented a wide variety of events over the course of the weekend.

The theme chosen was Fort Macleod Steps Back to 1874 – Celebrate Arts and Culture of Days Past.

For three days you could find historical re-enactments at the Old Fort along with artisans and craftspersons of the past. Entertainers livened up Main Street, along with an old fashioned shoot out. The Lone Ranger Donna Byram provided musical entertainment on Main Street. played on the big screen at the Empress, and native drummers and dancers performed on the street.

On Friday evening you could dance the night away at the family hoe down, that is, if you were dressed appropriately. Posters warned to “dress up or go to jail!”

Saturday feature entertainment was the John Wort Hannam Vaudevillians and more.

Breakfast, an ecumenical church service and an old-fashioned family picnic rounded out the weekend.

Alberta Arts Days in Pincher Creek

Arts Days celebrations took place at a variety of venues in Pincher Creek last weekend.

The Lebel Mansion hosted the Festival of Roses. . . Art in Bloom, which was put on by the Allied Arts Council.

At the historic mansion guests could view rose art, relax in the Oldman Rose Garden, or try their hand at rose-themed arts and crafts.

Several school groups visited the mansion to see their artwork on display and to smell the roses in the garden.

Interesting sessions included a handmade lotion demonstration with A beautiful reminder to stop and take time to smell the roses.

Wendy Davies, sewing wild rose quilt blocks with Diana Smith, creating origami roses with Sue Neumann, or making beaded rose bookmarks.

Paul Olsen was guest speaker Friday evening. Jody Best and Roy Pogorzelski both gave presentations, and the garden hat party was a colourful and fun event Saturday afternoon with musical entertainment by James Van Leeuwen.

Over at the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Museum you could meet local authors Eryka Bruder, Francis Riviere, Christopher Hoare, Farley Wuth A Brocket student enjoys the Oldman Rose Garden at the Lebel Mansion. and Murry Pura on Friday.

Claude Choe performed on classical guitar that evening to wrap up the day and was said to be “amazing.”

Saturday evening DJ Frankenstein spun tunes and under coloured lights and balloons.

Metis Local 1880 provided art lessons, medicine wheel crafts and language lessons both days.

At the library you could peruse books by local and Alberta authors and look at the wood carving display

by Julie Winkler. Sarah Gross and Betty Heppner displayed their crafted goods at the Ranchland Mall.

The public was invited to vote on three decorated hats in the Marjorie Haugen Hat Challenge. The challenge was a memorial tribute to Marjorie, who was a valued member of the Oldman Rose Society until passing away at age 94. The hats, which belonged to Marjorie, were decorated by Margaret Keer, Cara Bannick and Ana Williams.
