My Little Corner It’s getting spooky out there!

It used to be that decorated homes and yards were in fashion only during the Christmas season, but the trend of decorating for Halloween is growing each year.

Decorating has gone beyond the traditional carved pumpkin on the front step to being frightfully sophisticated.

The options are endless – you can purchase electronic ghosts and goblins that swoop through the air, inflatable witches and pumpkins, ghouls that shriek as children pass by, creepy music soundtracks, giant spiders, bats and black cats, tombstones and coffins, and dry ice to create wisps of smoke.

You can choose to dress up your place a little bit or a lot.

And then, of course, there’s the fun of decorating yourself!

Halloween costumes are limited only by one’s imagination. Some are cute, some are traditional, and some are completely outrageous.

Halloween activities abound this weekend with everything from school parties to church events to costume parties at local pubs.

Drivers are reminded to keep their level of vigilance high as some costumes limit vision and there will be many excited little ghoulies out and about for treats.

If you are attending an adult event remember to have a designated driver or to utilize your local taxi service.

With a bit of snow coming down yesterday in Pincher Creek I had to remind myself that it is late October and time to put the sandals away (maybe) and start preparing for what winter has to bring.

I’m not a fan of winter, and hope that covering events will force me to get out more and learn to enjoy it.

I tried downhill skiing for the first time in my life three winters ago and will continue to provide laughs for anyone sharing the bunny hill with me as I try to get it figured out!

Halloween for hunger Alison Fleming of Sparwood is taking advantage of Halloween to collect canned goods and non-perishable food items rather than treats.

She will be joined by about 20 Grade 7 to 12 students on her mission to collect 1,000 items for the local food bank.

Drop-off boxes have been set up at the A&W Restaurant, Curves and the Elk Valley Herald office, with 55 items donated already.

Sparwood residents can prepare for Alison and her friends by having items ready when they hear a chant of “Trick or treat, give me some good food to eat” at the door.

Halloween for Hunger is a campaign of Free the Children. Craig Kielburger, co-founder of Free the Children, can be found on YouTube encouraging young people to dress up for a good cause and collect non-

perishable items for local food banks instead of candy.

According to the organization’s website, 867,948 Canadians turned to local food banks in March 2010 – the highest level of food bank use on record.

For many people hunger is a daily reality, and Alison has taken on the challenge to make a difference.

The Grade 12 student became involved with Free the Children in July 2010, when she made a trip to China to teach English through Girl Guides.

Like many young people across the country, she caught the bug to work toward making the world a better place.

Her enthusiasm and dedication to making a difference in her community is both inspiring and contagious.

Fuelling change for BearSmart

Crowsnest Conservation Society’s BearSmart program works with community partners and volunteers to encourage citizens, visitors and businesses to be bear aware, to eliminate and manage wildlife attractants, and to reduce the potential for conflicts between humans and bears.

The project is one of 26 projects chosen for the Shell Fuelling Change program and has the opportunity to

earn $25,000 in funding.

You can show community and regional pride by casting your vote at www.fuellingchange.com .

Ten votes are given to the group for each person who signs up, and additional votes can be made by purchasing gas at Shell and submitting the transaction code found at the bottom of the receipt to the same website.

BearSmart has received 30,235 votes as of press time and is ranked in second place, 234 votes behind Le programme d’engagement L’eau pour tous pour toujours? of Quebec.

Marie’s jaw dropped when she found out that ATB had doubled their sponsorship donation to $4,000. ATB is the major sponsor of the SnowKids program which provides up to 6,700 free season passes to the Castle Mountain Ski Hill for students in Grades 1 to 6. The pass entitles the children to unrestricted skiing/riding for the entire winter, and includes a package of cool things to use when they do!

Members of Nanton’s Beta Sigma Phi group are gearing up for their third annual Distinctly Nanton Market on Nov. 26.

The market will be held at the Nanton Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and runs in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce sponsored Nanton Lights the Way promotion.

The goal of the market is to promote the artisans and wares of local businesses and to attract shoppers from a regional base to see what Nanton has to offer.

Only “non-commercial vendors” are accepted for the market, and there will be approximately 40 tables with everything from pottery to weaving to art work. Vendors are approved based on a demonstration of how their products are “somehow unique or distinctive to Nanton and area.”

The Nanton Art Club provides a feature display as an enhancement to the market each year.

Local junior high band students provide set up and tear down assistance and receive a donation for their efforts.

Beta Sigma Phi members were impressed by how the event had been organized and agreed to take over.

Committee member Mary Robley says the group sees the event as a “service to the community more than a fundraiser.”

Any funds realized are passed on to community organizations. Last year the beneficiary was the High River Hospital Foundation.

The receipient for this year’s proceeds is undetermined at this point.

Beta Sigma Phi is 20 members strong in Nanton, and many have been involved since the club’s inception almost 40 years ago.

When the card is full with 15 stamps, it can be turned in at the chamber office.

Supporting healthy relationships Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter Association would like to remind everyone that November is Prevention of Family Violence Month.

PCWESA provides a safe, supportive environment for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Residential clients receive crisis counselling, programming for children and youth, healthy and nutritious meals, basic necessities, information sessions and referrals to community resources.

Women who request support but do not want to come in to the shelter can access the outreach program.

An outreach worker will do home visits and work collaboratively with the client to identify needs and set attainable goals. The outreach worker typically works with clients for up to six months.

PCWESA also offers women’s groups once a year in nine to 12week cycles. Please call 403-627-2114 for information.

Hundreds of Alberta communities and thousands of individuals are actively involved in preventing family violence through education and service provision.

Healthy relationships are the foundation of safe and caring communities. Children who grow up

with adults in a healthy relationship are more likely to thrive and flourish.

People in healthy relationships live longer and are happier.

Ten characteristics of a healthy relationship: • The partners in the relationship value themselves and each other.

They understand each other’s differences and they treat each other with respect and courtesy.

• The partners are equal. They make decisions together. If they have children, they parent together.

• When the partners disagree, they know that it’s OK to talk about their differences. They work it out together. They find ways for both partners to get what they need.

• The partners listen to and respect each other’s viewpoints. They express their feelings and opinions.

They do not make hurtful comments about the other person.

• Both partners take responsibility for themselves. They do not expect the other person to solve all their problems or always make them happy.

• The partners each feel comfortable taking time alone if needed.

They feel OK about doing some things separately.

• There is no fear in their relation-

ship. Healthy relationships are built on love, respect, caring and happiness.

• The partners do not try to restrict or control each other. They encourage and support each other’s growth.

• Even when the partners are busy, they make time for one another and their relationship.

• The partners have a circle of people who know them and support them as a couple. They spend time with others who have strong and healthy relationships.

Maintaining a healthy relationship takes time, energy and care – but is well worth it. Healthy relationships make everyone in the family feel respected, happy and safe. Disagreements are a part of every relationship and sometimes people need extra help.

Alberta Children and Youth Services has a help line that provides information on a range of relationship issues including how to keep your relationship healthy and strong, right through to addressing abuse in family violence situations.

Pumpkins in the park Flumerfelt Park in Coleman is the place to be Nov. 1 for a celebration of the 12th annual Pumpkins in the Park from 6 to 9 p.m.

Sponsored by the Bellevue and District Agricultural Society, candlelit jack-o-lanterns will adorn the park as residents get a chance to show off their pumpkin carving skills.

Viewers can warm up with hot chocolate, and donations to the local food bank have been accepted in the past in lieu of admission.

My Cup of Tea My potters wheel turns the clay.

My hands shape the clay.

Each shape is individual.

Each tiny teacup is similar to the one before.

They go together, yet they are also different, individual, defined.

You will choose the red one or the yellow one, or the green one or the blue one . . . or the rose one?

Intricate tea sets crafted by Elaine Zimmer adorn the walls of the Lebel Mansion.

Tiny children’s tea sets appeal to the little girl in me. (boys are not allowed . . . they break things) I am delighted, for a moment, disarmed of all my grownup-ness.

My inner child shines through.

I remember pouring, spooning, stirring, sipping.

I share in the tea party, memories of tiny tea cups, cookies and too much sugar.

I belong . . . like . . . “when I was a little girl”.

This collection of works is the culmination of years of playing with clay, mixed with memories of “playing” tea, as well as remembering how to play . . . with my grandchildren.

It has been a magical place, my studio, full of tiny tea sets.

A lot of playing!

The “love hearts” tea set was made by creating molds from individual love hearts candies. In the back is the broken heart cream and sugar set made from a candy that cracked when the mold was made.

My Cup of Tea is on display at the Lebel Mansion Gallery in Pincher Creek until December.

A Whimsical Tea Party The theme of Elaine Zimmer’s reception at the Lebel Mansion Gallery Oct. 22 was A Whimsical Tea Party.

Curator Linda Anderson Stewart is credited for the colour ideas, decor, and sayings painted on the walls of the gallery to promote the display.

Elaine has been working with clay most of her “adult life” and has attained a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design.

work, and she finds herself working on two or three sets at a time as one idea evolves into the next.

The tea sets are all very detailed and the process of making molds, or sprigging, from items such as onions and candies, is very labour intensive.

Elaine works from her home studio in Pincher Creek and has a passion for the personal aspect of sharing associated with sipping a cup of tea from a beautiful cup.

Family and friends joined Elaine in hosting the afternoon. Her granddaughters, Yoenne and Isis Feser of Pincher Creek, and Molly and Ella Ling of Calgary who are as close as biological granddaughters, served tea and treats to guests who attended the affair.

The girls all received tea sets made specially for them and will continue to pass on the tradition of brewing and sharing tea with their loved ones.
