My Little Corner On Remembrance Day we take two silent minutes to remember Canadian veterans.

It’s obvious that some people find these minutes painful to observe. A wonderful music video which makes this clear is set to Terry Kelly’s song, “A Pittance of Time.”

Based on the musician’s experience in a grocery store, the anger he felt toward a father who couldn’t take the time was turned into a moving song.

concerting trend. We must continue sharing the experiences and sacrifices, and fight to keep the day a sacred one rather than just another day off from work.

Every school approaches war history from its own standpoint. It’s tragic that my high school education didn’t include learning about what amazing and horrific things Canadian men and women did so the rest of us could enjoy our freedom.

The only specific war discussion I can recall was about the introduction of income tax as a “temporary” measure during the First World War. As a teenager I certainly wasn’t interested in war tales, but I should have been.

Our children need to know the cost of the freedoms they enjoy today.

I think an introduction to war history in school would have prompted me to ask more questions at home.

I didn’t ask questions about my grandfather until I was in my late 20s. He passed away the year I was born, so he wasn’t a man that I knew, and for some reason he wasn’t a man that I heard other family members talk about.

The story my father shared with me is reprinted from his publication, The Nipawin Bridge. His words are better than mine.

We spoke about it on the phone Monday, and the raw emotion of not knowing

his father and of “wondering what might have been and wishing for what should have been” came through clearly. I wish there wasn’t an 11-hour drive between us so we could share the hug we both needed after the conversation.

Some men and women are able to come away from war and fit back into a semblance of their “old life,” while others can’t make the transition.

My grandfather wasn’t able to find the words to share with my father, his only son. He became a stranger to his family as he tried to protect them from the unimaginable atrocities he experienced.

My dad continues to research the Great War in an effort to understand his father, and fears for the young people who don’t understand the sacrifices made

by Canada’s war veterans.

He choked up several times during our chat. I listened.

Please take time to remember those who are fighting to maintain our freedom, those who have fought and have lived with the memories, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.

This time shouldn’t be reserved only for November 11 — memories are fading, and two minutes isn’t enough time.

Making her mark

Hope Grier-Stewart visited with Pincher Creek residents Saturday as the Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps of Fort Macleod sold poppies.

She was still smiling at 3 p.m. after spending about six hours making her way around town on a chilly day.

Hope plans to become an RCMP officer, and sees participation in army cadets as valuable preparation for this.

The 16-year-old from Brocket is in her first year with the corps, and says Army Cadet Hope Grier-Stewart of Brocket “it’s really fun and you learn a lot.” sold poppies door-to-door on Saturday.

Hope heard about army cadets

through friends and also was interested because her grandfather was in the army.

Regular weekly activities include marching practice, and lessons about history, politics and the Canadian Forces. Community service and citizenship activities are introduced, and cadets participate in recreational sports and marksmanship practice.

Flying high with Harold At the age of 18, Harold Travis knew he didn’t want to be a coal miner in his home town of Natal-Michel (now Sparwood) and opted instead to volunteer for the Canadian Air Force.

This was in 1949, and by the end of the Second World War, 38 of Harold’s family members were proudly in uniform.

Harold learned to glide through the local air cadet squadron, and was a qualified pilot at the young age of 18.

His service began with Princess

Patricia’s Light Infantry and he spent a year in combat during the Korean War. Harold worked on multiple trades through the Air Force, and was eventually commissioned from the ranks in recognition for outstanding service.

After spending five years at technical schools, Harold earned his wings in 1963 and settled into his final trade as an aircraft engineer.

Seeking adventure when he enlisted, it certainly found him!

He was involved in an emergency landing of a Dakota aircraft which could have been disastrous. As well as the crew, there were 30 cadets on board.

A 1963 incident with an Argus aircraft left Harold not only with a broken back, but also missing a kidney and part of his hand after a bad landing in a snowstorm.

On occasion the Canadian pilots had the opportunity to show off a bit for their U.S. counterparts. One time Harold’s Argus was carrying 29 people along with 200 tons of torpedoes. This is another close call which could have marked the end of his career and of his life.

Harold took a one-year break from the service, but knew it wasn’t something he was going to quit.

Not all wounds are from bullets

By Oren Robison Remembrance Day reminds us of so much that was lost — so much that could have been.

Each of us no doubt has some special thoughts, particular memories, associated with Nov. 11.

Here’s one of mine — My dad, who was two decades older than Mom, was 56 when I was born. In my youth it always seemed to me that the great disparity in our ages was a barrier of sorts between us. We seldom had discussions.

There was one, though, that for me has proved to be our most memorable attempt to reach out to one another.

Invariably, Remembrance Day brings that occasion to mind.

As a child I was aware that Dad was a veteran of the First World War. But I don’t remember him ever speaking

I saw that he was holding some brightly-ribboned medals, and started peppering him with questions. He answered as best he could — and even, when I demanded with the persistent naivete of a child that he do so, showed me the silver-dollar-sized scars where two sniper’s bullets had struck him.

Reluctantly, he told me a little about the horrors of trench warfare.

His eyes misted as he told me how his best friend, peering over the trench’s lip on lookout duty, suddenly fell back, silently, most of his head sheared away by a sniper’s shot.

Then another expression, one I couldn’t comprehend, came into Dad’s eyes. He was sitting at the edge of the bed, leaning forward as though in suffering, elbows resting on his knees.

Wartime letters reveal highs, lows of Air Force life Submitted by Jean Blackall, Blairmore My father, Sgt. Ross Bev (Blackie) Blackall joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in the summer of 1939. He was trained at Trenton, Ont. as an air engine mechanic and was then transferred to Rivers, Man. (near Brandon), where British airmen were to be trained on the new air base built quickly at the start of the Second World War. The men were trained as quickly as possible in air navigation (especially night flying) because of the urgent need in Britain. It was my father’s job to keep the planes flying almost constantly in difficult conditions and severe cold. The number of crashes was high, and the morale of the maintenance crew was often low.

During this time he wrote to his

new wife, Winnifred Blackall, about the base and about his life there. He wrote down many of his thoughts, and they were the thoughts of many of the young men caught up in the frenzy of wartime Canada.

My mother saved all of Blackie’s letters. Here are some quotes: From Trenton, Ont. “I sit here and wonder. How wonderful it would be to look ahead. This is bound to be a turning point in my life. Will I be in the Air Force the rest of my life? Will I go overseas? Will I live another year? Will I get another job after the war if I don’t stay in the Air Force? Will I be able to get married and have a wife and little home which is so important to a man? Will I be able to hold the love of the only girl that means anything in my life when I am so far away from her all

the time? All these questions run through my head tonight and I am helpless to answer any of them — and they mean so much in my life.

Isn’t that hell?”

“This is a funny life. When we first came into the Air Force, we came to get what we could get out of it. As time goes on you know you would stay in to fight for your country even if you were not being paid anything.

You begin to want to get in action and fight for the ones you love. Men have always fought for this country and their loved ones and always will.

Every man here is a fine sample of mankind. There seems to come into your veins a feeling that makes you proud to be able to fight and you don’t mind being away from the ones you love so much when you know you are doing it for them.”

It was obviously painful to visit that long-ago battlefield.

He looked down at his clenched hands as he told me how he had to steel himself to step up onto the parapet to replace his friend as lookout, his lost buddy sprawled in death practically at his feet.

I was fascinated — and scared, too.

I wanted to know everything about it.

Dad was not an educated man, and in the face of my eager questions seemed unable to find the words he needed. He spoke hesitantly, and the signals of torment were there for me to read, easily, even as a child.

“Not all wounds are from bullets,” was his final comment before he took the medals from my hand and put them back into the trunk.

It was a remark I heard him repeat occasionally in ensuing years, but one that was beyond my understanding then.

One Christmas, 20 years after my father’s death, my own son gave me the book And No Birds Sang, by Farley Mowat. (This book shoud be compulsory reading in Canadian schools.)

As I read it, that long-ago conversation with Dad resurfaced in my mind.

Mowat’s eloquence was the expression of so much that my dad tried to, but could not, articulate in the one and only conversation he ever allowed himself with me on this subject.

Mowat, and others like him, have tried to purge their souls by sharing their experiences and their pain.

Many more, like my dad, by their silence tried to spare us. In doing so, they became enigmas to their own families.

But as illumination came with the reading, as I began to see my dad in the context of what he had endured, at last the scalding, healing tears of understanding flowed.

After 22 years in the Air Force and earning much recognition — or at least not getting caught doing anything wrong — Harold retired in 1971. Seven more years were served in the Reserves as Harold settled into civilian life.

Retirement included a new role as a big game guide and outfitter for 10 years. Harold was the founding commanding officer of the Sparwood/ Elkford Air Cadet Squadron and of the Sparwood Legion.

His keen memory will serve his four grandchildren well as they are starting

From Rivers, Man. “Well, darling, after spending my first day here, I can’t say I think very much of it. The hangars are very nice but as for the rest of it, not so good.

We sleep about 60 men in one large room with three big wood heaters to heat. The meals are not up to too much and only one helping. No doubt it will be better as time goes on as it has just been opened up. We are about four miles from Rivers, right out in the wide open spaces. The

weather, as you may expect, is very cold. In fact you don’t know how cold it can be till you have been here. Entertainment: none of any sort. I think they have a show on Tuesday and Saturday nights at Rivers. One dance a week with about six girls for 800 men. However, that doesn’t bother me. I’m sure I don’t know what the boys are going to do all winter. Mail comes in and goes out once a day as long as they can keep the roads open.”

“As far as that old eastern saying goes, ‘You don’t feel the cold because it is dry out west,’ don’t let them kid

you. Just try and work outside in the weather and see if you don’t feel it!

It was snowing when I came in last night and it hasn’t stopped.”

“Well, darling, much to our sorrow here, we lost four more of our boys yesterday. We did not find the wreck till this morning though. Gee, one of them was one of the swellest fellows you would ever want to meet.

And the worst part is that he was working for a friend of his on his day off.”

Thunder on ice Submitted by Corinne Petrone This weekend was very exciting for the Thunder novice team who beat Coaldale 2 by a score of 5-3.

On Sunday the team pulled a 9-7 win against Pincher Creek. The Thunder were behind 6-2 after the first, but never gave up and fought hard all the way through the second and third periods to earn the win.

Next weekend sees the team at a tournament in Cranbrook.

Regular season play resumes the weekend of Nov. 18.

From the moment the Spinney Brothers stepped on stage Oct. 27 at the Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod, the picking was furious and the grins on the faces of the bluegrass group singers were huge.

Mandolinist Gary Dalrymple admired Joyce Taylor’s strawberry scarf from the stage and modelled it after the show.

Harold Travis of Sparwood shared log books that recorded his endeavours with the Royal Canadian Air Force back in 1946. A fully qualified pilot at the age of 18, Harold began his flying career with the air cadet squadron in his home town of Natal-Michel (Sparwood). The exercises in his log book led to certification as a pilot. Harold’s story began on page 3 of this week’s Shootin’ the Breeze.

Aspiring pilots were required to log all of their flights and qualifications in the Flying Log Book for Aircrew other than Pilot. This log shows Harold Travis’s certifications as both a crewman and a flight engineer on various airplanes.

How will you remember?

This year’s Veterans’ Week poster features a field of poppies which represents the generations of Canadians who have served Canada from present to past. The two predominant poppies represent those Canadians who served their country overseas in times of war, military conflict and peace, as well as those who served in Canada and all who played a vital supporting role at home.

The poppy has stood as a symbol of remembrance since 1921— partly as a result of Lt.-Col. John McCrae’s famous poem, “In Flanders Fields,” penned in 1915 — thereby ensuring Canadians never forget all those who so graciously gave their lives.

Take the remembrance challenge. Your challenge is to make remembrance more

than something you feel. Make it something you do.

There are many ways you can show that you remember and honour our veterans: • pin a poppy above your heart; • attend a local Remembrance Day ceremony; • follow Veterans Affairs Canada on Twitter; • download the “We Remember” mobile app; • listen to veterans talk about their experiences; • create a mashup and share it on the Veterans Affairs Canada YouTube channel; • visit the Veterans Affairs Canada fan page on Facebook, write on our wall and

share how you remember; • change your Facebook profile picture to a poppy, write on your wall about how you remember or create your own remembrance fan page.

However you choose to remember, don’t forget to tag it, link it, share it.
