This year’s theme, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, is fitting for Melissa as she returns home for the parade every year, now with her own children. Melissa will be the honorary marshal of the 30th annual Santa Claus Parade on Nov. 26.

My Little Corner Christmas shopping seems to be one of those things people either love or hate to do, with little middle ground. I’m one who loves the challenge of finding that “perfect” gift for everyone on my list.

Shoppers enjoyed 30 floats in the parade of lights, entertainment with a fire and Tim Hortons hot chocolate to warm up by in the park, and great deals offered by businesses who stayed open until 10 p.m.

Up at the Ranchland Mall about 300 participated in the Co-op’s feather tornado, and visited businesses and craft tables.

Chamber of commerce president Bruce Buckingham was thrilled to see hundreds out to enjoy the parade despite the cold evening.

Fort Macleod is ready for Santa This year marks the 30th for Santa to make a special appearance at the Fort Macleod Santa Claus Parade.

In celebration of the milestone, Melissa Moses has the privilege of acting as the honorary parade marshal. As shown in today’s cover photo, Melissa was a perfectly wrapped gift in the first parade back in 1981.

Organizer Sue Risser has been busy making sure that everything is in place for the Nov. 26 and 27 event and says that “it’s really important to the whole community, and everyone volunteers and gets involved with what’s going on.”

Every year the parade and community events attract visitors from as far as Calgary and the United States, and Sue hopes that this trend will continue to grow and that more people will be attracted by what Fort Macleod has to share.

There are already 118 individual entries for the parade, and Sue expects more will be added throughout the week. Last minute entrants have been known to show up on the morning of the parade and Sue says “we just fit them in.”

The parade promises to be another great one with eight bands including

Lighting up Nanton

Members of the Nanton Chamber of Commerce have been busy making plans for Nanton Lights the Way, the town’s retail Christmas promotion.

On Nov. 26 most Nanton retailers will keep their shops open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Distinctly Nanton Market will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Nanton Community Centre on Highway 2 south.

This isn’t your typical craft sale as crafters are chosen based on the rela-

tion of their products to the Nanton area. The sale will offer a wide variety of unusual and unique wares, from art to handmade jewelry, and specialty foods to home decor. Admission is free.

Carollers will be out at various times throughout the day getting visitors into a festive frame of mind with their holiday music selections.

There is no charge for this service, but donations to the food bank and toy drive programs are always welcome.

Blackie’s adventures continue

We continue this week with a second set of excerpts from the letters of Sgt. Ross Bev (Blackie) Blackall of the Royal Canadian Air Force, an air engine mechanic during the Second World War. They were kindly provided by his daughter, Jean Blackall, of Blairmore.

From Rivers, Man. “Received your letter this morning and if you think it is cold in London, just read the clipping on the top of this sheet.”

Newspaper clipping, Dec. 16, 1940: Severe Cold Checks Air School Practice Rivers, Man., Dec. 16. (Special) — Cold weather has hampered the actual flying at the air navigation school near here. Thursday morning several planes took off but low temperature in the higher altitudes forced them to return to the ground. It is reported that one plane’s thermometer registered 68 below zero.

“Well, darling, as you no doubt know, one of our planes crashed last night and killed four. One of the fellows, the wireless man, sleeps right next to me. Little Kean was a great little fellow. They didn’t come any better. It was terrible, honey. I was one of the first there. At first we thought they had bailed out but after digging in the wreck for about two hours we saw a foot sticking out. We had block and tackle to pull the wreck up, for the plane was in the ground about eight or 10 feet. We got the bodies one by one. I had better stop here for if I told you how they looked you would not sleep for nights. The plane was from our hangar, one of the Norsemen and I have been up in it often. We all have the jitters for it could have been any of us but we will get over it.”

“Some of the fellows have their wives at Rivers and I think they are the luckiest men here as having a wife to go home to would be wonderful. Like all the other bases, the few places here to rent are sky high. One fellow told me his is paying $60 a month for room and board for his wife. Isn’t that terrible? That is the way the people treat the men who are fighting for them. Rivers is just like a small town with a gold rush.”

“I was up on a test flight today and after flying about a half hour with the pilot and listening to the engines, and after surmis-

ing they were OK, I decided to get into the gun turret at the back of the plane.

(You can see it on the pictures of the Avro Ansons I took home.) Well, when I got in it and shut the door the pilot, being a great fellow for a joke, decided to try and scare me. He swayed the tail back and forth, up and down and zoomed the plane up and down, side-slipped and almost turned it over and everything he could think of to get me scared. Boy it was a great thrill but not half the thrill I get when I hold you in my arms and your lips meet mine. That is the only time my head really starts to spin!”

On the way to the Pacific, via Scoudouc, near Moncton, N.B. “Did I tell you that when I was in Montreal, I had a few hours to spend so I went for a walk? I saw a very big and beautiful church. The door was open so I went in and there was no one there. I just sat down and prayed to God and asked Him no matter what happened to me, if He would look after you and little Diane and Jean. It must sound nuts to you but it made me feel better. Darling, if I could only make you understand how much I love you. I still can’t understand how I got you. I was not as good as I should have been but somehow or for some reason, God gave me you and I am the luckiest man in the world.”

“I still worry and I guess I always will about how you are getting along. About the pump, about the coal, about the wood and also the car. Your being alone with the babies, but I know that you will always see they are OK. I worry about lots of little things I used to do and look after. All I can do here is ask God to look after my little family and I do that very often.”

“The station is all mixed up here with a lot of boys back from overseas from the last big bunch that went over. A lot of boys from Centralia that went over are back and to top things off, they will not give them any leave to go home and see their families.

There [are] about 300 all together. About 36 of us have signed up for the Pacific and they tell us that is what this is for.”

Then, the end of the war and demobilization “The boys went wild when they heard

the war was over. They started a fire on the road and started to take the place apart.

Then the radio cancelled the report and said it was all a mistake. They had a hard time to stop some of the boys.”

“What do you know — they have me joed again for Service Police on VJ day when it comes. Damn it — that makes me mad! I told them I was joed at Centralia VE day but they said I had to take it. Oh well, maybe it is just as well as it will keep me out of mischief. The trouble with me is I’m too darn big!”

Orders Excerpt: 15. Discipline: The undermentioned N.C.O.s are detailed to report to the D.A.P.M. the day VJ Day is declared: R52162 Sgt. Blackall, R.B. “They keep expecting VJ Day but it has not come. No doubt it will any day now.

I guess I told you they joed me for Service Police for the doings on that day. — Ooops! War has just ended. I will see you later as must report for duty.”

“Believe me, dearest, I have been on duty for about four hours and honestly I’m in no condition to finish this letter. I want you to know I have been true to you and thank God it is all over and we may soon be together again.”

“We had a very rough time here last night. I was on duty and had my hands full. They got me to look after the beer and I guess I drank a lot. There were no girls, not even one kiss and that is the truth. I love you and my little ones very much and that is easy to remember even when I do drink. I got very high though and the last thing I remember doing before going to bed was kissing your picture and I wrote a little verse that came into my mind: I gazed at their picture, On my desk where it stood.

A mist filled my eyes but My heart understood.”

“Discharge is effective the 25th but the station is in an uproar with so many discharges — 300 in 24 hours. Tonight, after almost six years of war, and I have been in it from the start to the finish, God has seen me through all this without a scratch and will return me to the most beautiful and wonderful girl in the world. Gee, Honey, I’m just so happy I can’t write any more except I love you with all my heart!”

Thunder!

The Crowsnest Pass Thunder atom hockey team travelled to Raymond and Magrath last weekend. They lost both games by scores of 7-5 and 0-6.

The Crowsnest Pass Thunder pre-novice team 2 played host to the Fernie Timbit team at their first home game of the season, Nov. 20.

Everyone skated great and had fun, with Fernie scoring more goals to take the win.

At the end of the game all players were given a chance to shine with a shootout, and all the kids came away winners.

The kids are now practising hard and looking forward to the upcoming tournament in Elkford on Dec. 3.

Thanks again to all parents and family

members who came out and showed their support of the team. We hope to see you all again in Elkford!

Principal’s Message A note to high school students is

to ensure that you are registered in the courses for second semester most appropriate to meet your graduation requirements.

Parent Teacher Interviews will be hosted on November 15 and 16 th in the Hawk’s Nest. The structure to the meetings are as follows: In the Hawk’s Nest – teachers will be distributed throughout No appointments necessary to be scheduled as it is a “walk in” format. If you want to specifically schedule times, please contact the teacher.

Report cards available in the office for pick up on the 15th and 16th.

Grade 12 Orientation will be in the library starting at 6:30 (learning clicks and Ms. Robinson presenting).

This will happen on Tuesday only.

This is a new Parent Teacher Interview structure and we will be seeking your feedback on this approach. We are intending to create a greater sense of community and to facilitate easier movement of multiple students/parents among teachers.

We continue to update the pinnacle parent viewer and we encourage you to use Pinnacle as a tool to keep abreast of your child’s progress.

I have been coaching the Junior Girls Grade 7 Volleyball team this year and I would like to comment on what a pleasure it was to coach such a likeable group of girls. Our season wrapped up on the weekend. I would like to extend a special thank you to Sydney Riedel for her help as an assistant coach and to Mr. Whitehead for his organization of our tournament and league play. Thank you also to John Dyck, our forever pleasant and friendly bus driver.

Sports—Volleyball & Basketball Volleyball is wrapping up and over all it was a good season.

Just want to thank the coaches for the time and effort they put into the volleyball program. One highlight from this year was hosting our first ever junior girls volleyball tournament here at Halton in which we had 14 teams along with our own two teams who participated. It was great!

Basketball will be starting soon and in case you are worried that fees will be high, by helping out with fundraisers put on by the booster club the student-athletes can earn most to all of their fees back.

So, there is a chance you can get all your money back. Currently, we have the coop gift cards selling, along with pre selling Lasagnas. For more information contact Mr. Whitehead.

Eco Hawks Recently, the EcoHawks re-

ceived a cheque for $1000 from ConocoPhillips Canada as part of the company’s School Environmental Quest program.

These funds will be used to further the plans for the EcoHawks/Blackfoot outdoor garden space. Look to the newsletter regarding further environmental developments at the school. January we plan to recy-

cle old cell phones and cell phone batteries – so watch here for further information.

Repurpose Old Xmas items!

The Eco – Hawks have planned a Xmas party for members and invited guests on the afternoon of Friday Dec 2. The students are planning on repurposing old Xmas decorations and recrafting them into updated orna-

ments and decorations. Please drop off any unwanted Xmas decorations at the MHHS office between now and Dec 2. The Eco-Hawks plan to either sell these updated ornaments at school or give them away as part of the Food Bank Christmas hampers.

Football Season Over -Trophy Won! The community and high school

football seasons are over and all players deserve congratulations for raising the level of play this year. The PeeWee’s and Bantam’s had their best seasons ever. Congratulations to Head Coaches Travis Liscombe & Mitch Ball respectively. The Senior Mustangs, not only had their best season ever but set some historic milestones along the way.

At the beginning of the season the senior coaching staff and players set out 5 goals (ALL firsts for the team). Goal one, to beat Claresholm (they did 13-6), Two, to get ranked in the top ten provincially in their Tier (they were ranked 3 rd most of the fall), Three, to have a winning season (they did 6-2 in fact, if not officially), Four, to win their Division & trophy – which they did. Fifth, to represent our region in the provincial play-offs.

We achieved 4 out of 5. We fell short of the last one, in large part

due to a lack of players available in the late stages of the season (some were injured, a few quit).

But the boys know what is needed to go further next year and already many have started training and recruiting! For the third consecutive year there will be a Stampeder Camp for all ages and a full senior camp again this May. The senior team has struggled over the years and if it weren’t for the dedication of their head coach of many years, Dennis Sokownin and support of Faith Zacher, there probably would not even be a senior football team today. Their volunteer work in coaching and keeping the programs alive reflects the commitment that this community has towards building quality athletic & learning opportunities for our kids. In that spirit, it is not “Nothing great happens without great commitment & sacrifice!”

The current senior coaches, Peter Brannen and Wayne Alexander invite any former players, past coaches or knowledgeable fans who might be interested in joining the coaching staff to contact Faith Zacher (267-3900) or Coach Brannen (627-4414). Practices begin Aug. 16th, Mon. to Thursday 4-6pm (games are usually Fridays), and next fall the season “should” run to mid Nov. when the “Provincial Championship” game is held. ;->

Remembrance Day at Halton Ms. Robinson, along with her two helpers Micaela Pura and Cassidy Keeley spent many hours of hard work organizing what turned out to be a memorable Remembrance Day Service on Nov. 8th.

Piper Hayden Varley, one of Matthew Halton’s own Gr. 7 students, led the entrance of the Color Party with a solemn tune. Alyssa Barbaro opened beautifully by singing “Oh, Canada” while magnificent images of Canada flashed in the background.

Several Gr. 8 students, along with Cassidy Keeley, rose to the stage to recite their moving poetry. Mr. Brannen’s Multi Media students presented power points followed

“Travelling Soldier” by the Dixie Chicks. Mr. Petluck, with the help of his Drama Class, shared the message that remembering is not something you just feel - it is something you do. The entire student body was so inspired that everyone present got up from their seats to go and shake each veteran’s hand. This act of recognition was well received and appreciated by the entire Color Party. Alexandra Morgan, also gifted, sang the heart-

warming “Halleluiah” by Leonard Cohen. President and Vice president of Social Justice and Student Council presented the honorary wreaths. Mr. Charette, a veteran of many tours overseas gave a very moving and inspiring message from the veterans. The Last Post was sounded, followed by two minutes of silence and the Reveille trumpeted by Matthew Halton’s Gr. 12 student Lindsay Sheen. Many remarked that it was the most memorable and heartfelt Remembrance Day ceremony they had ever attended.

Grade 12 Orientation On the evening of Parent Teacher Interviews, Tuesday, Nov. 15 th, at 6:30 Ms Robinson will be hosting a Gr. 12 orientation. The presentation with include a speaker from Learning Clicks. Topics will include: applying for scholarships, post-secondary financing, applying for post-secondary institutions and the impact of social media.

Students Fundraise for UNICEF Social Justice hosted event “Got Change” October 28th, 31st and November 2nd to collect funds for UNICEF. House points will be awarded based on how much each house collected. At this time, Social Justice is not finished rolling all of the change so the Page 4

winner is yet to be announced.

However, it is evident that Red and Green are in the lead.

There are a few options as to which particular program the money will go to. The options are as follows: Pencils and books are $10.00, a soccer ball and pump is $32.00, a bicycle is

Parents are the biggest influences in kids‟ lives and have the power to shape kids‟ views. Research shows that children who talk to parents about smoking are less likely to start, so keep up the conversation. How to talk to your kids about tobacco:

When we hear „osteoporosis‟ we often think of it as a disease old people have. According to calcium researcher Dr. Robert Heaney, “Osteoporosis is a pediatric disease that waits until old age to express itself.”

Tell them that most people do not smoke Talk about how smoking causes bad breath, smelly clothes, stained fingers and teeth Discuss immediate harms from smoking: shortness of breath and risk of colds and asthma Be honest about the long term health consequences; about friends or family who have been negatively impacted.

The time for building bone is in the preteen and teen years. Maximum bone mass in the hip and spine is achieved by age 20. The best way to have the strongest bones possible is to have adequate calcium in the diet.

Exercise also helps build bone provided there is enough calcium in your diet. Teenage girls, especially those who are underweight or dieting, may not get enough calcium.

Foods rich in calcium include milk, yogurt, cheese, salmon, tofu, sardines, rhubarb, broccoli, peas, sesame seeds and almonds to name a few. If your child is not a milk drinker, various cereals and juices are fortified with calcium. By learning to read food labels, you may be able to find other foods fortified with calcium.
