A Wright kind of night Canadian country singer Michelle Wright thrilled audiences at Fort Macleod’s Empress Theatre for two evenings last week. On Tuesday, young audience members Angelina and Karissa were invited onstage to join Michelle in singing “Silent Night,” and did a fantastic job! The show included Christmas arrangements, some great new songs as well as old favourites. Michelle kept the audience enthralled with her smooth voice, funny quips and storytelling. My Little Corner Are you enjoying the hustle and bustle of December? What a fabulous time of year it is for those who love music – there is a performance to take in almost every day!

Although I’m not as fast as a speeding bullet, I was able to keep up with the CP Holiday Train as it made stops in Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Coleman and Sparwood on Sunday. Each stop offered variations in the excellent entertainment and I still have Valdy’s voice in my head.

Sunday evening the carol festival in Pincher Creek was most impressive, with a variety of solo and group performances. The Crowsnest Pass performance this Wednesday promises to be fantastic as well, based simply on what their choir shared in Pincher Creek!

Michelle Wright’s Christmas show in Fort Macleod was top notch, and I was impressed with the two young gals who took the stage to join in the encore piece. I wasn’t able to catch up with them afterward so could only try to remember

I went on a road trip to Claresholm on Saturday and found myself marvelling at the brown fields and the lack of snow at this time of year.

The snow that began falling on Sunday kept some people in their cozy homes rather than venturing out to see the Holiday Train, but for those who weren’t daunted by the abundance of sparkly flakes, it actually made the experience a little bit more magical.

Always trying to push my limits a little bit, I hit the slopes at Castle Mountain for opening day on Friday. In my lifetime I have logged approximately six hours of time of skis – all since my 40th birthday!

My initial experience with downhill skiing was three winters ago at Castle Mountain and I recall having a fun lesson with a fellow named Blondie.

The following winter I tried a lesson at Fernie and was disappointed to have an older man for an instructor. It wasn’t his age that mattered, it was his attitude. He belittled all of us in his beginner class and had several adults in tears.

After that experience I thought it might be best to just try to get it right on my own. My friend Pam thought I

was doing pretty good and took me for a very long chairlift ride – I entertained many as I careened and fell down the hill!

On Friday I was thrilled with my lesson with Katie at Castle Mountain. She encouraged me, laughed with me, and made it a most enjoyable experience.

I even took on a green slope from the Huckleberry Chair and managed to get through the afternoon without falling down even once or hurting my pride too much! Thanks to Andrew and his staff for the experience – I’ll be back!

On the menu of exciting things coming my way this week is the opportunity to co-host the morning show with Daryl Ferguson of Mountain Radio on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

This will be a great opportunity to shoot the breeze about coming events and to promote our advertisers and the special things that they have going on.

Tackling Castle Katie Wallace began her trips down the mountain as an infant riding in her dad’s backpack, and has been an instructor since she was 16. She was on the race team in her hometown of Lakeside, Ont. and loves the opportunity to work and live at Castle Mountain Resort.

Kaite is the assistant director of the snow school and has an abundance of neat tricks to help young children get started with downhill skiing.

Her instruction prowess isn’t limited to children – her oldest student was a 76-year-old woman who showed up to her lesson wearing bright pink lipstick and a one-piece snowsuit and a goal to learn to ski powder. Regardless of age, Katie enjoys “getting people on the snow who haven’t tried it before.”

The resort offers a wide range of instructional programs for all ages and levels. You can contact Katie at snowschool@skicastle.ca for more information.

Castle Mountain patrons can also look forward to participating in avalanche awareness courses and specialty classes this winter.

The Little Castle Club is available for children aged two to five years. The kids get to ski for an hour and then playtime is provided at the on-site daycare. Prebooking is required.

New in January is the ladies’ clinic for skiers of all levels. The group will meet Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will ski different areas of the mountain and learn how to improve through watching video of their efforts.

The lesson will wrap up with a social hour including a complimentary beverage. This is a drop-in class.

Hockey memory night in Stavely

Ten years ago a challenge was put out for an annual game between Willow Creek Composite High School students of Claresholm and J.T. Foster School students of Nanton as a bit of fun rivalry between the senior classes. The game was set to be played at Stavely rather than at either of the home arenas.

Before that first game was played, Nanton player Greg Dawson died in an accident on Thanksgiving weekend 2001.

The game went ahead as planned but took on a new tone as the Greg Dawson Memorial Scholarship was established.

In 2003, Mike Marshall of Stavely was also involved in a fatal car accident. He had played for the Claresholm team in the first game back in 2002. He was recognized by the addition of his name to the memorial title of the yearly game.

The schools continued to run the annual event and funds raised through admission were shared between the Greg Dawson Memorial Scholarship fund and the WCCHS Sports Society and other

What do you get when you add 28 cases of pasta sauce, 137 kilograms of mozzarella cheese, 15 kg of Parmesan cheese, 356 pounds of ground beef, 360 eggs, 78 kg of cottage cheese, 27 cases of pasta, seven hours in the kitchen and about 30 volunteers?

It sounds like it could be a big mess or a massive food fight, but it was far from that!

The math works out to a total of 400 yummy lasagnas.

Volunteers were hard at work last Thursday putting together homemade lasagna to raise money for the Matthew Halton Booster Club in Pincher Creek.

Amy Gillespie was a friend of Greg Dawson, and Santanna Thom a friend of Mike Marshall. The two women have attended the games when possible in memory of their friends from the Nanton and Claresholm classes of 2002.

The games have been put on by the Nanton and Claresholm high schools, but this year Amy and Santanna have taken the reins to put together a final game that is truly memorable.

After Saturday’s game, the names of the young men will no longer be associated with the event.

Amy explains that after 10 years the significance of the event is diminishing as the students didn’t know the boys they are supposed to be remembering, and few of the current school staff were around in the days of the class of 2002.

In the past few years the game has become more of a competitive event than a show of remembrance and it’s time to bring closure to the game as a memorial

Tammy Kennedy was thrilled with the overall success of the event. “It was amazing!

I didn’t need to call anyone, and everyone came forward to help.”

With the great facilities available at Matthew Halton School, there was room for multiple cooks in the kitchen, with each taking a spot in the production line.

The atmosphere was light as the volunteers managed to put together about 70 lasagnas an hour.

The schools may choose to continue the small town rivalry game, but for this year the senior students will be watching from the sidelines.

Rather than the class of 2012 hitting the ice, Amy and Santanna have rounded up “about 95 per cent” of the alumni of the original game played in 2002. The roster has been rounded out by close friends of Greg and Mike.

A few of the seniors are understandably disappointed at not taking part in the event, but the hope is to bring positive closure to the families and friends of the two young men who are missed every day.

The evening is bound to be an emotional one that will be played with heart and soul.

It will be a strong moment when the puck drops at the Stavely Arena at 8 p.m. on Friday.

Admission is by donation at the door.

Beef was donated by Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange, Al Lively, Barb Lagarde, Stauffer Ranches and Kennedy Ranch, with processing contributed by Pincher Creek Meats & Deli and freezer and cooler use donated by the Pincher Creek Co-op.

A homemade dinner for $20 – it all adds up to an unbeatable value and a great fundraiser for the school.

Who’s got the pot?

Santa’s workshop was manned by members of the Dolphins Swim Club and the local Girl Guides to provide a fun and affordable shopping solution for young children.

John Johnson of the Claresholm Legion wants to know who’s got the pot! Apparently this is no ordinary pot. It’s described as a furlined “pee” pot holding a Pilsner beer bottle.

This interesting artifact has passed from one Legion to another as outside members visit and whisk it away with them when they leave.

According to John and branch president Bill Wale, the pot hasn’t been seen for some time and the Claresholm Legion wants to find it and go on an adventure to bring it back.

This just goes to show that the Legion can be a fun group to hang out with!

Volunteers in Claresholm will be celebrated this Friday at 6:30, and installation of officers will take place on Jan. 7.

The club holds regular meetings on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. along with regular activities such as jitney darts (jitney means everyone is welcome), euchre, crib and meat draws.

Memberships for all Legion branches are due by the end of the month.

Young turkey meets up with a spring chicken!

It was tricky to find an empty seat, but one was noticeably empty – Jodie Vanlangan was the big winner of the day with winning tickets for one turkey and two hams despite leaving early!

Saturday meat draws are a tradition at Legion locations throughout the area.

Saturday artists The kids art program in Fort Macleod started last summer with classes taught

by Ashleigh VanSluys. The program was so successful that the Fort Macleod Allied Arts Council decided to offer it through the school year.

Ashleigh teaches a general painting class Thursdays after school as well as the

The theme of the Saturday classes varies from week to week, and the group who gathered last weekend were all enthusiastic about coming back again.

CP Holiday Train rocks through southern Alberta and B.C. Sunday we followed the CP Rail Holiday train for its stops in Fort Macleod, Pincher Creek, Coleman, and Sparwood.

Each stop was slightly different in terms of the number of people who came out to see the show and make contributions to their local food bank, the amount of snow falling and the strength of the wind blowing.

A constant was the fantastic entertainment provided by Valdy, Tracey Brown, Randall Prescott, Anders “Snowball” Derup and Adam “Christmas” Puddington at every stop and the crowd response to their show.

As well as community contributions, CP Rail had huge cheques to share at each stop. The Pincher Creek Food Bank received $1,000, the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank and Fort Macleod Salvation Army each received $1,500, and the Sparwood Food Bank received $2,000.

Katie explained there was a formula to determine the amount donated at each stop, which factored in particular hardships faced and employee representation in the communities among other things.

Katie celebrated earnestly with each com-

munity as the special presentations were made, and the enormity of the project was not lost on anyone volunteering or attending the events. Katie commented that “there’s nothing like the sound of mittens clapping” and she was absolutely right.

Despite the wind and snow which grew stronger as the train travelled west, people came out to enjoy the half hour of entertainment and community spirit.

Whether it was hot lips on a cold harmonica or cold fingers on a hot guitar, each musician paid no mind to the weather and the crowd kept themselves warm from the goodwill emanating from within them.

Socks for Santa

Most four-year-olds are busy wondering what Santa will bring them for Christmas at this time of year. But Shael Davidson is not your average little boy – when he met Santa on the CP Holiday Train last Sunday he had a gift for the jolly fellow in red.

Shael’s dad Mike beams with pride as he explains how his son became a sock collector. Back in October, Shael was watching a TV show about recycling which showed a young boy in India sorting plastic.

What struck Shael as wrong was that the boy had no socks. This led to a family discussion about economics and poverty at a level the young boy could understand.

Shael was determined to send socks to the little boy in India who had none. This was how the sock project came to be. Shael’s parents explained that although they couldn’t send socks to the little boy on TV, there were other children in their community who needed socks. Family and friends began contributing socks which soon led to additional contributions of other basic essentials such as toothbrushes and underwear to help the less fortunate.

Drop boxes have been set up at The Bargain Shop, Rexall, Canada Post, Copy Magic, The Pass Herald, Kid’s Kollege, Brighter Futures and Parent Link, all in the Crowsnest Pass. Donations will be accepted until about Dec. 22.

For those in the Pincher Creek area, we will have a box set up at Mountainside Printing (publishers of Shootin’ the Breeze). We share office space with Robin & Co. Hear the angels sing!

With a full chorus of voices, the 51st annual Pincher Creek Community Carol Festival was held at the community hall Sunday evening.

The community choir was directed by Pat Toney and it was great to both see and hear a strong male section to complement the women’s voices.

Jackie Therriault and Brenda Squair provided piano and organ accompaniment for the majority of the pieces.

The tone for the evening was set with a reading of “The Christmas Story” by Kendall Oliver and Morgan Downing-Baker.

Group performances were given by the Pincher Creek Community Choir, the

Canyon School Choir, Friends in Sync, and the Crowsnest Pass Community Choir.

The combined school bands from Matthew Halton School in Pincher Creek and F.P. Walshe School in Fort Macleod displayed their musicianship skills and gave a sneak preview of their upcoming band concerts.

Alyssa Barbero and Christian Davis offered solo vocal performances and Kristen Williams added a jazzy touch to the evening with her piano solo.

There was a strong turnout and the hall resounded with the sounds of the season.

Christmas Spirit in Nanton

A chilly gift Dan Crawford and Catherine Sheard of the Rotary Club of Pincher Creek faced a few challenges fitting this 20-cubic-foot freezer through the doorway at the Napi Friendship Centre last Friday. The centre houses the local food bank and the freezer donation was just in time for the Christmas season donations coming through the door on a daily basis. The Rotarians had generously offered the freezer donation a year ago, but it wasn’t until the food bank was set up in this new location that there was enough space to finalize the project.

Don’t worry if you don’t have an advance ticket to Nanton’s In the Spirit of Christmas Concert because tickets are available only at the door!

The 15th annual concert takes place Wednesday evening at the Nanton Community Centre starting at 7 p.m., and promises to be a night of music, fun and fellowship.

The tentative lineup for the evening includes local singer-songwriter Toby Malloy, who is involved with organization of the yearly event, along with co-organizer Pam Woodall and her trio including Sharon Davis and Lee McLean. Others sharing their talents will be musician and rancher Mark Fox, Jill and Eddie Tremblay, Tin and Toad duo from Vulcan, Claresholm cowboy and musician Charlie Ewing, and Mel Wilson of Mel Music in High River.

Pam Woodall explains that the lineup is “kept low key.” Sometimes there are little children performing, sometimes there are skits, and sometimes there are professional musicians.

The local aspect is important, and the goal is to create Christmas spirit through sharing music within the community.

A number of musicians are contacted each year about the event, but the lineup is never set in stone. You just never know who might not be able to make it due to weather conditions or conflicting events, or who can suddenly attend after originally declining to perform.

Everyone is welcome to attend and to take part!

Pam and her husband Kevin Simpson had been actively involved with the Diamond Valley Christmas Concert for many years prior to moving to Nanton.

They quickly recognized that there were many talented musicians in Nanton and area and chose to create their own fun Christmas event.

Fifteen years later Pam says that “many people say it doesn’t feel like Christmas until they’ve been to the In the Spirit of Christmas Concert.”

The concert started as a free evening of entertainment, but after a few years they began charging at the door, with all funds donated to the Nanton Food Bank.

The concert fits in with the mandate of the Nanton Quality of Life Foundation to support volunteerdriven events in the community.

The foundation generously covers the cost of hall rental and advertising which means that every penny donated at the door goes directly to the food bank.

Set up assistance is provided by the Nanton Scouts, and the audience always pitches in to tidy up the hall when the concert is finished.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children, with all proceeds going to the Nanton Food Bank.

Donations of cash and non-perishible food items will be accepted at the door as well.

Show will benefit community groups Kimberly Hurst of Lundbreck has put together a Christmas trade show meant to provide support to the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter and food bank along with a variety of shopping venues.

Her mission began back in September when she started contacting vendors to sell their wares at the Pincher Creek Community Hall. She found merchants through the area allied arts councils, farmers markets, Facebook, and good old-fashioned word of mouth.

Charli Jaenta is donating her time to provide face painting services in return for cash donations which will be directed toward the local Angel Tree fund. It is typically more difficult to buy gifts for older children in need and this is the age group that Kimberly plans to provide gifts to.

There are 52 tables booked, and shoppers will be pleased with the variety of goods available.

Non-perishible items and cash donations are also being accepted for the food bank at the trade show which is open for business from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17.
