My Little Corner Last Wednesday was a wild, wild day!

I set off from Pincher Creek shortly after noon to drop off papers at our distribution points east and north. It was windy, with a warning in effect, but didn’t seem much out of the norm for our area lately.

I glanced at the temperature display in the car, and was amazed to see a reading of plus-15 degrees. What?! Isn’t it January?

My first stop was at the Crowsnest Trail Outlet gas station at Brocket, where a Siberian husky was basking in the sunshine on the warm pavement. It could have been a scene from a hot summer day.

As I left the Piikani Nation administration office, a small group of women were talking about a grass fire burning near Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. The billowing smoke was visible as soon as I got back to Highway 3.

The amount of smoke was incredible as it churned and swelled in contrast to the clear sky, and it intensified as I reached Fort Macleod.

I tuned in to several different radio stations trying to learn about the fire, but heard only warnings about the wind, which had definitely increased.

Many stores were keeping their doors locked as a last resort to keep them shut against the wind. As I was driving away from A&W, a woman was trying desperately to pull the door open. It wasn’t locked, but the westerly wind had more strength than she did!

I was treated to a no-charge microdermabrasion facial every time I exited the vehicle, as the sand blasted ferociously against my face. I much prefer the salon facial I was treated to a few weeks ago at Providence.

Visiting along the way is a fun part of the distribution job, and over the course of a few hours I had heard stories of “the big fire back in ‘97,” along with various reports and speculation regarding the fire of the day. By the time I was finished in Fort Macleod, the sky was dark grey with smoke and there were rumours of a highway closure.

Knowing that the wind would be the same the next day and that my calendar was full, I chose to forge ahead and hoped I could get through.

At the highway barricade I was given directions to Highway 811 by a helpful worker. He wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get through, but I decided to check it out.

At one point I stopped to take a photo of a lone tree standing strong in the distance against the smoky sky and the stubble field.

The radio was now broadcasting evacuations for townships in the MD of Willow Creek, and advising livestock owners to cut their fences and let the animals run if they weren’t able to transport them immediately to safety.

Suddenly the smoke was behind me, and I had only the wind to contend with. Well, the wind and not knowing for sure where I was going!

As I approached Granum from the east, I noticed a tire swing in a yard on the outskirts of town. What caught my attention was the contrast of the motionless swing amid the windy chaos.

At A.J.’s Diner I was shown pictures that a customer had taken of the nearby fire and a blown-over semi, and learned that there was another fire burning near Nanton.

I jumped over a few puddles and made my way to the community bulletin board.

Some people giggle when they see me standing at bulletin boards and taking notes. What stood out today was a notice that had been posted since my last visit – a fire ban for the MD, effective Dec. 28.

I’m still getting accustomed to the seasonal differences between northeastern

Saskatchewan and southwestern Alberta, but this didn’t seem right at all – fire bans, mud puddles and no snow in January!

As I continued north, most were travelling cautiously.

In Claresholm the power had been out for a portion of the afternoon, and quite a few of my stops were closed because of the outage. The wind was still gusting and damage was visible at Roy’s Place, where a portion of the canopy had blown down.

By the time I reached Stavely I had perfected my exit routine. Because I was carrying papers at each stop, I learned to open the door just far enough to hold it from underneath with my left foot while adjusting my load, sliding out of the car and grabbing the door to keep it from blowing away. Sometimes getting back in emptyhanded was just as tough, with the fight against the wind.

I was greeted by flashing lights as I approached Nanton in the fading daylight.

A small fire was still burning in a field southeast of the highway, and I watched two horses that seemed oblivious to the fire, smoke and flashing lights around them.

An overturned fifth-wheel trailer, still attached to the truck that had towed it, was the next sight, and off to the right a gaping hole in the side of an industrial building flapped wildly in the wind.

I picked up the pace as I made my rounds. Darkness was closing in, and for the first time I wondered if my choice to carry on had been a wise one. I hadn’t felt unsafe at any point in the drive, but as I considered everything I had seen, I realized that even if I was diligent and careful it didn’t guarantee my safety.

I was most grateful to the attendant at Nanton Esso, who stood in the gale to pump my gas and then cheerfully wished me safe travels.

As I began the journey home, I saw flashing red and blue lights ahead. I turned west as directed by the police officer at the scene, and when I came back out to the main road I could see that a large tree had come down and was blocking southbound traffic through Nanton. Mother Nature was certainly on a rampage.

From Nanton to Fort Macleod, emergency lights flashed close to the highway as tow trucks righted overturned semis and crews worked at containing the fires that had burned and left devastation in their wake last Wednesday afternoon.

She huffed and puffed Mother Nature played hardball last Wednesday with gale-force winds that fanned flames and spread fires near Fort Macleod and Nanton, and blew over tractor trailers and other large vehicles. The photos above could be a late summer scene with the blue sky and brown fields. Community and emergency service efforts reduced the damage signficantly as neighbours worked together.

Beginner roping clinic The Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society is excited to offer some great things in 2012 including beginner roping clinics, a mechanical flag information night, and a winter highlight of Baxter Black’s cowboy poetry and humour.

First up are the roping clinics Jan. 13 and Jan. 27 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Horseshoe Pavilion.

The cost per clinic is $5 for those 19 and over, $2.50 for ropers aged seven to 18, with no charge for the little ones aged six and under.

All ages are welcome to try their hand at the roping clinic in a fun learning environment.

There is no need for a horse as everything will be taught in a step-by-step process from the ground.

There is a knack to making the loop for roping and getting the wrist and arm motions just right.

Ag society president Janet Watmough says, “We have some excellent ropers in our area, with Jennifer Jones, Randy Stav, Lyle Hewitt and Brian Delinte – all knowledgeable

ropers and expert teachers – to get us started.”

Janet adds that despite how busy their own personal lives are, some “will always be willing to give their time so that other people have an opportunity to learn.”

The ag society has also purchased a mechanical flag that can be used to practise working cattle in a safe environment for horse and rider. An information night to learn to set up and take down the device will be held Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Horseshoe Pavilion.

Baxter Black is known as the best selling cowboy poet in the world, and he’ll be making a stop in Pincher Creek March 8 for a one-night show.

According to Tina I would like to introduce myself to the readers of Shootin’ the Breeze. My name is Tina Webber.

I was born and raised in San Jose, California some (ugh) 53 years ago. A self-taught reader who has loved the written word all her life. Moved to Calgary at the age of 15, which was also the first time I saw snow (not impressed after the first snowball in the face, and less and less as time goes by), went to the University of Calgary to become a teacher, but eventually ended up operating a C Train for the city.

I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1992. This changed the course of my life and was the catalyst for a series of coincidences that brought me to Vista Village in Pincher Creek. I have learned much in this life, and handle life’s challenges with a sense of humour and common sense.

Those are the basics.

I never thought about writing before because, frankly, I didn’t think I could. But I had to pay attention, not to the road I was on but to the one I have been directed to. But I get ahead of myself; first I must explain what has gone on before.

It was a long journey to Pincher Creek, but one that brought me in contact with people I feel I was supposed to meet because they added to my growth as a human being, and I to theirs (I hope). I think we all have felt that way, friends who enter our lives at a time when we didn’t know we needed them. Such has been my life.

One of those coincidences occurred after losing (by computer glitch) all the journal entries I had written in the summer. Of all of the entries, the only one fresh in my addled brain was about the loving interactions between a baby and her parents. I did not want to forget it, so I rewrote and printed it. Strangely (or coincidentally) enough, I felt compelled to get a coffee and, with the copy still in hand, waited to fill my cup. I noticed a friend behind me looking at the printed copy so I asked her to read it and give me her opinion. Instead of doing so, she whipped out her cell phone and called a local newspaper. This led to writing a weekly column for them.

This twist of fate may not have oc-

curred if I hadn’t felt compelled to get that coffee, if I had been earlier or later by minutes, or if my friend had not called the paper. (If, if, if, boggles the mind really.)

Writing for the newspaper gave me a chance to try something I had never considered. To have strangers recognize and praise you is a heady experience and I must confess the acclaim was something I missed when I quit.

After leaving the paper I was asked to do a newsletter for Vista Village. I did accept the challenge and have been doing one that has become successful in its own right. I think of it as my baby who is turning one year old soon.

Many people who have followed my work said I should write for Shootin’ the Breeze. I do believe that when I am told the same by three or more people it’s time to pay attention. I read and researched the paper and was impressed by its quality, by its support of local business and that it is locally owned.

Random events seem to happen for a reason so I have learned not to take coincidences for granted. A better term, perhaps, would be links in the chain to our destiny.

And yes, writing seems to be mine and I’m so thankful to have discovered it.

I felt it was appropriate to share with you how I came to be writing this column.

How it seems my destiny as I have been directed to it. I hope you will help me fulfill this destiny, simply by reading it. And, who knows? It just might be a “coincidence” that you are.

I like to follow up articles with what I like to call brain teasers. All the information needed to solve them is given – but think outside the box, as they say. Solutions: to be given at the end of the next column. Good luck.

More than groceries and gas

The Pincher Creek Co-op will celebrate its 90th birthday in September.

This coincides with the International Year of Co-operatives, which will celebrate the success of the co-op movement in Canada.

The Co-op owns the Ranchland Mall, and the food store is found at this location. The new gas bar and C-store are located in the parking lot of the mall, the farm and home centre is in the industrial area, and a unique home centre can also be found in Cowley.

The food store is also home to the administration office, where you’ll find general manager Bruce Buckingham and information about anything you’d like to know about the Co-op.

The Co-op takes pride in its fresh produce with potatoes, carrots, peas, beans and radishes coming from local suppliers. You will also find fresh B.C. fruit, produce from Medicine Hat Greenhouses, Taber corn, and celery, dill and mint from Bow Island.

The bakery and deli staff are busy all day preparing soups, salads, breads and hot foods like barbecued chicken and ribs.

The meat department features 100 per cent Canadian beef and chicken primarily produced in Alberta. Bruce stresses the freshness of the Co-op meat in saying, “Our staff of four cut, grind and wrap fresh meat all day, every day.”

In the grocery department you can find dairy products, dry goods, and lots of specials that can be found in the weekly sales flyers.

Shoppers receive 15 per cent off their bills on the first Tuesday of each month, and can take advantage of many other promotions throughout the month. Calendars can be picked up at the cashier’s till to show when the events, including Wacky Draw Day and $100 Club Day, take place.

Home delivery is available daily via a local taxi company.

The food store is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Friday, and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays.

Bruce notes that full serve gas pumps are “pretty rare now, and ours is the only gas bar offering full service.”

The C-store offers a great selection of confectionery items, hot and cold food, camping supplies, gift cards and lottery tickets.

At the pumps you’ll find regular, mid-grade and premium gasolines along with EP3000 clear diesel from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., every day of the week.

The agro and petroleum department at the farm and home centre can also meet your fuel needs with a 24/7 cardlock, and petroleum delivery that travels as high as the Castle Mountain Ski Resort.

As Bruce explains the services offered by the Co-op as a whole, he notes that “when people ask what we really do and start taking stock they wind up saying ‘whoa, wow.’ ” Agro sells a full line of farm supplies, animal and veterinary supplies, and features the largest horse tack inventory in southern Alberta.

This is also where you’ll find fuel tanks with capacities ranging from 50 to 50,000 tons, crop supplies, and delivery of everything right to your farm or field.

Bruce describes the lumber or home centre as the place to find “a full line of building supplies and materials for everything from small jobs like patching drywall to building an entire house.”

Full estimating services are offered by a manager with Leeds certification, which gives the Co-op the ability to provide services with the highest environmental and efficiency standards.

The hardware department features “a complete line of builders’ hardware,

household hardware and farm hardware – for all possible needs in the community.”

A garden centre opens each spring in April and closes in August. Here you can find everything from bedding plants to garden tractors and even those very important garden gnomes.

If Cowley is a little bit closer to home, Bruce invites you to check out “the same things found in Pincher Creek on a more intimate scale.”

Cowley Co-op carries household hardware, a full line of building materials and home renovation supplies, farm hardware and livestock supplies.

The Pincher Creek Co-op is owned by its members, and anyone can purchase a membership.

The board of directors consists of nine members who meet monthly.

They are responsible for hiring the general manager, who then oversees 14 other managers and the general staff for a total of about 80 employees.

Bruce has been in the Co-op retailing system for 26 years. He started out in Admiral, Sask. delivering fuel and fixing tires. He became branch manager there through a series of promotions.

With a few stops in between, Bruce assumed his role in Pincher Creek in 2007 and moved here with his wife and son.

As a newcomer, Bruce was impressed with what Pincher Creek offers by way of facilities and amenities, and his family actively participates in local events and sports.

Bruce has held the role of president of the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce for two years and is also president of the Co-op Managers Association.

The Co-op has been actively participating in the Shop Smart program and is the sponsor of the $2,000 fuel grand prize.

Plaid, pipers and dancers to honour Robbie Burns If you are a fan of highland dance, bagpipes, haggis and Robbie Burns, you won’t want to miss the Robbie Burns Celebration, Jan. 21 in Stavely.

Performers include local and regional dancers and members of the Lethbridge Pipe Band. Dinner will be served by the Stavely Elks Club.

Dance instructor Louanna Jones is keen on having her students and their families appreciate their Scottish heritage, and the Burns Celebration is one way to expose them to new things.

The dancing will include numbers from beginning primary dancers to accomplished premier dancers. Everyone who knows the steps will be able to join in the mass fling at the end of the evening.

The evening is a fundraiser for Louanna’s students who are hoping to travel to Scotland in the summer of 2013. The group’s goal is to pay the way of the dancers through fundraising.

Louanna hasn’t visited Scotland yet herself, and only two students have been there before. She’s looking forward to creating an opportunity for her dancers and their families that includes touring, exploring the culture, and performing.

In conversation, Louanna’s passion for dance and offering the best she can to her students is obvious, and the fact that her weekly classes attract dancers from well beyond Stavely is a testament to the success of her school.

Louanna tends to have her students focus on medal tests where the dancers receive “feedback on their own work and are competing against themselves.”

Her students are found performing dance-outs throughout the community, and some have taken a competitive route.

Big bucks for Sparwood Carol Walmsley had a huge grin on her face as she accepted a $2,000 donation from Katie Hill on behalf of the CP Rail Holiday Train on Dec. 11. The donation was for the Sparwood Food Bank, and was followed by $500 from Teck, $500 from the Sparwood Lions, $500 from the Futures Society, and $850 to go along with 10 truckloads of food that had been gathered

by Sparwood Emergency Services the previous weekend.

A huge crowd had gathered on the chilly and snowy afternoon to support the food bank and enjoy the entertainment of Valdy, Tracey Brown, Randall Prescott and the Holiday Train Band.

Carol is most gracious in saying “Sparwood is incredible – we get so much support before Christmas that we don’t have to do any more fundraising for the rest of the year. We really are blessed.”

The food bank is run by volunteers, and the space is donated by Rick and Cindy Pater of Centennial Ventures.

Carol believes “if people ask for help, you take care of them,” and the food bank doesn’t have requirements such as proof of wages because it’s already a big enough thing for them to come in.

The cupboards are always well stocked, and the food bank has never been in a position of not being able to help when someone has come in. Carol credits this to “assistance that comes from all directions.”

Toys for Tots is under the umbrella of the Sparwood Food Bank and provides fresh fruit and vegetables and milk twice a month for families with children.

Carol considers it a privilege when recipients become comfortable with the volunteers and share their stories and accomplishments, and was excited that food hamper requirements decreased by about 10 per cent this Christmas.

The food bank is located at 125D Centennial Square with the entrance located behind the Legion and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m.

The CP Rail holiday train rolled into Sparwood Dec. 11 bringing great entertainment and a $2,000 donation to the local food bank. Despite the chill and deluge of snow, the bleachers were full, and contributions to the food bank were significant.

The Pass is where I have decided to stop for a while to carve my own little niche in the community. My name is Amber Lee Mohl and I ventured to live life in the mountains just over a year ago, when I bought a teeny tiny house all of my own – I call it my 400-square-foot mansion.

I live on a great street, with wonderful neighbours. I’ve met people of all sorts, blessed with the inevitable quirks and habits that come with the territory of small town living. Since I come from a small town myself, I understand how it works!

Speaking of work; over the last nine years I’ve made my living as a radio commercial writer for various stations throughout Western Canada. I’ve also just recently delved into the big, wide world of content writing for websites. I’ve taken that experience to heart and now work as a freelance writer.

I’ve found life in the Pass to be a positive experience, with beautiful scenery and an eclectic choice of events to attend year round. It’s a small town with a lot of heart and soul, and a ton of potential.

With Shootin’ the Breeze, I hope to help you rediscover your home; I want you to help me learn about where we live. I want to hear your stories and memories. Tell me about the friends you’ve made, an exceptional person you may have met in the community, and general way of life in the Pass.

It’s been just over a year of life in the Crowsnest Pass and I look forward to meeting you. Watch for more in the coming weeks; with your help, I look forward to passing on the good news with stories about the Pass and surrounding area!
