My Little Corner Yesterday I had “one of those days.”

It all transpired from the simple act of doing laundry – it would have been an uneventful day had I taken a moment to check the pockets before I tossed a load of dark clothing into the washing machine.

Tucked away in a pocket was a 16 GB memory card from my camera. It was washed and then dried for good measure.

Actually, it was dried twice because my husband removed my finished load from the dryer and ran another cycle without cleaning the lint filter.

The fuzz-filled lint filter had come to be the final resting place for about 95 per cent of my photos from the past week.

Gone forever are images of children laughing and enjoying Literacy in the Gym and an assembly at Canyon School in Pincher Creek, team roping photos from Claresholm, hockey pictures from Fort Macleod, and the only photos taken of Marion Johnson accepting a huge prize – I was the only media person who attended both the draw and the presentation the following day.

I don’t clear my picture cards regularly, so over 500 pictures were washed away.

I’m sorry and disappointed I don’t have those captured moments to share.

It makes me think of those who lost so much in the Jan. 4 fires at Nanton and Fort Macleod. Through no fault of their own, families have lost treasures of great personal significance that are irreplaceable.

A huge salute again to those who are making a difference through fundraising and simply lending a hand to help replace the things that can be replaced.

People like Lenora and Dan McLelland, who put together a community fundraiser for fire victims that raised about $50,000 last Saturday, are awesome!

Thanks to their initiative and the support of many others, five families will have the opportunity to start rebuilding.

The priceless things that have been lost will be committed to memory and not forgotten.

While I’m disappointed at losing some moments I would like to have shared, and annoyed at myself for the manner in which it happened, I know these moments have also been saved in the memories of many.

My name is Dawna and my husband is Garnet, and it was wonderful to share a meal with you and your friends and to receive a copy of your very well-edited news publication. I enjoy the Breeze and you are doing a great job.

We discussed the fact that Garnet and I had just been married on my 65th birthday in June, and your wedding was also in 2011 I believe.

Well, my question is, do you have any information on the Mastodons Bridge? I believe it is possibly in the hills south of either Pincher Creek or Cowley – somewhere around there.

My dear senior friend (79 years young) is interested in painting a picture and heard about this bridge on a TV program or in a magazine.

I would love to see it, climb it and have lunch on the bridge. Let’s! I’ll bring the refreshments and snacks. So I will leave it with you.

Marion Johnson of Pincher Creek was “real surprised” to receive a phone call from Lieve Parisis of the local chamber of commerce last Wednesday.

Marion picked up her phone and learned she was the lucky grand prize winner of the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce promotion – Shop Smart, Shop Local.

Her prize was $2,000 of fuel, sponsored by the Pincher Creek Co-op. With two vehicles and a motorhome to keep fuelled up, Marion won’t have any trouble using up her reward for shopping locally.

Marion is a testament to the saying “It only takes one ticket to win.”

According to Lieve, almost 1,100 cards were entered in the draw, and only one of them belonged to Marion.

And to top that, Marion also won another major prize sponsored by the Co-op a few years ago when she had only one entry in the barrel!

Bruce Buckingham, general manager of the Co-op and president of the chamber of commerce, joked about this with Marion as he handed her a fistful of gas cards last Thursday.

Marion liked the idea of the Shop Local promotion even though she “kept forgetting” to present her card to be stamped. As a loyal Co-op shopper, she had no trouble collecting 15 stamps on 15 shopping occasions.

Thirty-four businesses participated in the program by stamping shopping cards when people made purchases at their stores. Shoppers could turn in their cards for entry to the draw once they had 15 stamps.

With over 15,000 local purchases made on the completed cards, Lieve says “This first edition proved to be a big success.”

The promotion ran from Oct. 15 to Jan. 15 and plans are in the works for a second program to start in the spring.

Racing with cardboard The Raging Elk Cardboard Derby was held Jan. 18 at Fernie Alpine Resort, with contestants launching themselves down the ski hill in homemade cardboard crafts.

The racers aimed themselves for a target in the snow and received points for accuracy and creativity.

Matt Mosteller reports there was a “huge crowd watching the event, and lots of cheering on all of the wild contraptions people created to sit in and hurl themselves down the track. The competitors had a blast – in fact the Jedi Starfighter piloted by Karen Pepper went crazy fast!”

Next up at the ski hill is a two-day ski/board-a-thon fundraiser, with money raised going toward purchase of a digital stereotactic mammography machine for East Kootenay Regional Hospital.

By Tina Webber I wondered what the exact definition of karma is, so I researched it. The word karma comes from the Hindu and Buddhist belief of the total effect of a person’s actions and conduct during the successive phases of the person’s existence, which determines their destiny.

In modern western civilization it is aptly summed up by the saying “What goes around comes around.”

I had another blast of karma recently after giving a Christmas present to a friend. This present was in the form of labour, so the price was not known until the task was completed.

It turned out to be more than what I had expected, but it is important to be as good as my word so the bill was paid in full.

This is where karma comes in. You see, I received an unexpected cheque in the mail for $20 over what the gift cost. It reminds me that this has often been the progression of events in my life. I could have been very rich monetarily if that was important to me because I had an uncanny ability to pick stocks and a keen grip

on the real estate market. Making money was not as significant to me, because I have always believed that even though I may never be rich I would always have enough. And so I concentrated on developing myself to become the person I was meant to be.

I began to pay attention to my instincts more and more. I initially started trusting myself when working with a group who had set up a stock investment fund. After listening to them over coffee most mornings I decided to invest in a penny stock on my own. The first stock was picked out of the newspaper, knowing nothing about it other than it “felt right.”

The price was 15 cents a share when I first saw it. I ended up not investing because they convinced me it was a bad idea and, not trusting my instincts, I deferred to their experience.

The stock went up to $1.35 in a short time. If I had invested the $1,000 dollars I had intended it would have produced a profit of around $10,000.

I did learn to trust myself more after that, to discover I had an uncommon ability to pick money-making stocks. After several successes on my own, of course my co-workers wanted to

know how I did it. I could not tell them that I relied on a feeling that the stock “felt right” as I realized they would not understand and would probably laugh at the thought.

With the success on the stock market I did learn to trust myself more and developed a belief in karma, because what I had naturally put out in the world was coming back. And I began to realize it always had!

I have at times wondered why I was given the diagnosis and consequences of multiple sclerosis, until I looked at what I have learned about myself. If I did not have multiple sclerosis I wouldn’t have moved to the Crowsnest Pass and ultimately Pincher Creek. This path has brought me into contact with people I know I was supposed to meet in this life for our mutual growth as human beings. I have learnt much about who Tina is, discovered unknown potential and had my beliefs put to the test to find I did not come up wanting. Although odd to say, I wish everyone would be as fortunate.

Help Linda build a home!

Linda Hammond is on a mission, and you can help!

After a family vacation to Mexico in December opened her eyes to some appalling living conditions, she knew there had to be a way to help others not as fortunate as herself.

Linda and her sister, Diane Miller of Calgary, did some research and were impressed with the Canadian non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity. The group is “working towards a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live,” and this appeals to the Linda.

She says she “immediately knew this is it – the way I can help.”

Linda and Diane will travel to Costa Rica April 22 to 30 to help with construction of six-by-eight-metre cement housing for a family there. The home won’t have plumbing, heating or electricity, but it will provide a sturdy, healthy place for the family to live.

The work will be very physical in nature and Linda is training for this with the help of Paula Dwyer of Fusion Fitness.

“I’m a farm kid and not afraid of work,” Linda says.

She sees the program as a means for providing “a step up” to people who want and need their own homes, by providing help to do something they can’t do on their own.

The owners are required to help build the home, and once they move in they begin paying for it through a no-interest loan from

Habitat for Humanity. Building selfesteem and pride of ownership are as important as building the house itself.

Linda and her husband Jeff own Top Hand Industrial Services in Pincher Creek, and solar systems are an aspect of their business.

Linda plans to take a solar light as a housewarming gift that will be greatly appreciated.

Jeff will be home with the couple’s children – Brooke, Shawn and Carter – while Linda is away.

Shawn remembers seeing homes with curtains for doors, and children running and playing in the streets, when he was in Mexico, and admits he wouldn’t want to live as the people in the small village they visited do.

Linda’s contribution will be a gift not only to the homeowner, but also to herself and her family.

Off to Ecuador After a year and a half of planning and fundraising, a group of teachers, students and some family members left Jan. 27 for Quito, Ecuador.

The Livingstone School Travel Club received a rousing send-off from their fellow students at an assembly Jan. 24. It’s amazing what a roar the student body can make when they are excited!

Thirteen Livingstone students have been joined by two students from Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek, and four students from Crowsnest Consolidated High School in Blairmore, on this unique educational adventure.

Karen Paton is the lead teacher behind the 10-day South American excursion and is supported by Alan Friesen, Liesl Leishman and Janet Elder.

Karen explained that the trip is not a vacation – it’s all about learning and seeing the world responsibly, and has been organized from the ground up by her team.

Preparation for the trip included sampling Ecuadorian cuisine, researching history and current affairs, and learning a bit of Spanish.

Karen says that “part of the challenge to the students is finding the courage to partake fully in the culture without imposing North American culture” on the experience.

Linda Friesen, Alan’s mother, was raised in Ecuador and will act as tour guide for the trip. Another personal touch will be a special reunion with two international students who spent time at Livingstone School two years

ago.

Karen says the opportunity was made available as an interschool trip to students in Grades 9 to 12 in the area, and those participating will earn three credits at their grade level. Students were expected to meet behavioural standards and demonstrate citizenship skills, and Karen adds “it was important to know that every student would be engaged.”

Each student needed to put together a proposal for research to complete on the trip, and will be required to give a presentation to earn school credits for the project after the trip.

Lots of neat ideas have been put in motion, and students will be spending time learning about natural history, sea life, law and order, backyard life and even coffee culture.

A celebration will be held in the spring to allow the travellers to share their findings and presentations.

The trip cost $3,000 per person, and each student and family were responsible to participate in “a whole lot of fundraising,” says Karen.

Karen is excited to share this experience with her two daughters as well as to see “what opens up for the kids.”

Michele Fraser’s husband Kevin and their daughter Jilisa are both off to South America on this adventure, and with 14 hours left before departure, Michele shared that “it’s very exciting, indeed, for all of us! I think I’m more nervous than either of them.”

‘No Particular Topic’

Crowsnest Pass Art Gallery reopened Jan. 28 with the non-juried show “No Particular Topic.” More than 50 people attended the opening reception.

The walls of the gallery showed off work in a mixture of media, created mostly by area artists. In all, the show boasts 47 works of art and one installation.

Krisztina Wood, managing director of the gallery since last June, explained that one of the challenges was determining how to hang the artwork, considering not only the number of pieces but also the variety of media.

The gallery walls tell many stories through the art. Board member Jeanne Beaty acknowledged the amount of work required to set up the display, saying “Mounting takes a lot of work and Krisztina is doing a great job.”

Next up at the gallery is the annual Chili Bowl Fest on Feb. 4. This is an opportunity for people to check out the new display while enjoying a bowl of hot chili. For an admission fee of $10 for adults and $7 for children, you get not only the chili but the bowl it comes in! Crowsnest Pass Pottery Club members have been busy making bowls for the past six months for this event. Chili bowls are available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or as long as the chili lasts.

The gallery typically hosts eight month-long shows along with the summer show which starts in early July and ends in early September. The theme for this year’s juried summer show is “Art Recycled” and submissions with an environmental theme will be accepted until April 25.

Crowsnest Pass Allied Arts Association is a charitable organization and celebrated a 25th anniversary last summer. Jeanne has been involved in various capacities for 17 years and is currently the secretary-treasurer. She is proud of the “vibrant gallery and the vibrant board” who make everything happen.

The organization will offer a variety of classes this winter including social dancing, drawing and pottery.

Admission to the gallery is free and you can find it on Highway 3 at Frank.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, weekends and holidays.

The photo above is of one-quarter of Lynette Jessop’s interactive installation on display at the Crowsnest Pass Art Gallery.

Lynette used wood, mirror, lighting, shiny bits, drawings, oxycut plate and stainless wire to create four optic effects, each within its own environment. This segment is the infinity mirror and is called “Shiny Birds.” Lynette’s notes with the display state: “Infinity reflections of some of my favourite shiny things and my wire sculptures go off into infinity, even though the mirrors are less than two inches apart.”
