Davis Clement of Millarville was caught in mid-air by the camera during a run at the Canada Post Canadian Series Frenzy, held at Castle Mountain last weekend. The competition saw 54 skiers from British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario showing their stuff as they vied for spots on the national team and qualified for national events. Davis was one of six members of Castle Mountain Freestyle Club who participated. He will be joined by fellow members Veronica Oczkowski and Braden Barber of Pincher Creek, and his brother Garrett, at junior nationals March 13 to 18 in Quebec City.

My Little Corner We’ve all heard conversations about the world going to hell in a handbasket and how the youth of today are in no shape to take their turn at the wheel.

This is something we hear all too often as many choose to condemn youth in general. It is unfortunate that stereotyping is so strong in these conversations.

Sometimes there is apathy in these same critical people, who aren’t necessarily willing to step up and help our young people find their way and their place in life. If youth are perceived to be failing, then we, as their mentors, must be failing as well.

We need to enforce rules in our homes and schools and remind our kids and their friends of what is acceptable. And, of course, we need to be prepared to lead by example.

I see things that concern me on a daily basis, but don’t think it’s fair to condemn the generation as a whole.

I spent this past weekend in Calgary at the district Rotary Youth Exchange orientation, and can honestly say I was blown away by the potential of the young people I met over the course of three days.

The sessions were facilitated by senior Rotex students who have previously been on exchange and continue to be involved with the program. Their confidence and organizational skills were commendable.

The exchange program has a three-year commitment. For the first year, the young people are the outbound students preparing for their journey. During the second year, they become the inbound students in their host countries. For the third year, they are busy sharing their experiences and helping the next group of outbound students prepare

for a year abroad, while at the same time getting accustomed to being back in Canada. At the “March Weekend” of this third year they officially become Rotex students.

The stories shared were emotional as all three levels of students spoke of the challenges and high points of their exchange.

The current inbound students, here from all over the world, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to spend time in Canada, and also shared challenges and highlights.

The outbound students, their parents and their counsellors were busy absorbing every bit of information. It was an opportunity, in particular for the parents, to connect and share their concerns while building a support team. It takes a huge amount of trust to send your son or daughter to a foreign country for a year – that trust needs to exist between the parents and their child, and also between the family and Rotary International.

Students are expected to immerse themselves in their new culture, which means having minimal contact with their families back home. As they successfully integrate themselves into day-to-day life in their host country and connect strongly with other exchange students, goodbyes are difficult when the year comes to a close. Coming home poses its own challenges, and both students and parents were given much food for thought about the process.

The youth exchange program has been in place for many years, and is considered by many to be the “crown jewel” of Rotary International activities.

It was amazing to watch the group of outbound students interact for the first time in January. They are all leaders, and immediately gelled as a group – this is a bond they will carry for the rest of their lives.

Katrina Holoboff of Pincher Creek is preparing to head to Brazil for a year. She is the first student outbound from the area in about six years and can barely contain her excitement!

I have the privilege of acting as her outbound counsellor, which puts me in a role of providing support not only to Katrina but also to her family.

Another young person from Taiwan will be on exchange in Pincher Creek for the year Katrina is away.

I met some amazing youth this weekend who will be strong leaders and innovators.

I also met some amazing adults who are providing the support young people need to recognize and begin to reach their potential.

This role falls to all of us.

Twelve teams from across Alberta will be visiting Pincher Creek and area with their coaches, families and supporters to participate in this exciting event.

Our new school mascot, SABE, will be introduced at our pep rally on Tuesday, March 13.

This week will see our basketball teams playing at the zone playoffs at Lethbridge College.

Our senior boys play against Senator Gershaw on Monday, March 5 at 6:45 p.m.

Our senior girls play on Tuesday evening at 8:30 p.m. at Lethbridge College.

Sports Booster will hold a meeting on Wednesday at 7 p.m. All parents of students who participate in school sports are encouraged to attend.

Our March school council meeting takes place this Thursday, March 8 at 6 p.m. All parents are encouraged to attend.

Congratulations go out to Philip Mullen who placed first in giant slalom, second in slalom and third in super giant slalom at the Special Olympics alpine skiing competition in Jasper this past week.

The Crowsnest Crooner

By Amber Mohl FancyPants Freelance He’s the Crooner of the Crowsnest Pass.

And over the years, Lorin Hansen has become a popular mainstay at the Bellevue Inn, known for his karaoke shows that rock the house every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening till the wee hours of the morning.

That’s when you’ll hear the music emitting from the hollows of the BI, where Hansen has set up his equipment to entertain the crowd that forms in the popular bar on Main Street.

From working in a lumber mill to belting out the tunes on a weekly basis, Lorin Hansen has made a living doing what he does best, and he’s proud to share his passion for music with everyone.

Growing up in Bellevue, Lorin comes by his musical talents honestly. As a kid, he sang with his sisters at church. He took piano lessons from the age of five and started guitar lessons at 14. It was then he realized how universal music really was and wrote his first song.

“It was a personal ode to the love I was looking forward to finding,” he shares with a chuckle. “I was definitely a romantic when I was younger.”

This was also the time when Lorin fell in love with music. Katrina isn’t too worried about making friends at her new school and says, “For people like me who are in the program, it’s just second nature to take initiative and make things happen.”

Most of the other students had European and Scandanavian countries as their top choices, so Katrina was thrilled to be chosen to go to Brazil because she has a keen interest in the rain forest.

“An attraction of the program for me was getting out of my comfort zone, out of my own home and into the experience of someone else’s,” Katrina says.

“I’m not home all the time, but I love my family to death. We’re super close, so the

passion by playing in a couple of local bands.

Back in 1997 Lorin won his first karaoke contest. The event took place in Lethbridge and at the time he was still working at the mill. The contest included the best of the best from all over, and his talent came in full force, as Lorin ended up winning a coveted spot in Nashville North. Soon after, he recorded a song for international release titled “Who Needs You?” In 1999, Lorin entered a contest with biggest challenge will be being away from them.”

Students are discouraged from frequent communication with their families, so they can make the most of their time on exchange. Her mom points out there would be a communication gap if Katrina was going on to university, so it’s something they’ll all need to learn to deal with. This will be amplified in an age of instant communication. There will be no texting!

When asked how her language training is coming, Katrina giggles and says, “Luckily I’m a charades champ!”

Outbound students receive a red blazer which Katrina is looking forward to wearing with pride. “I’m excited to get my red jacket and get stuff [souvenirs] pinned on it and walk around looking like a goof. I do that on my own anyway.”

She’s counting the days, and they’re going to pass quickly as she prepares for her journey.

It’ll be 13 years in June for Lorin, as a karaoke master. He started out working the karaoke circuit in Lethbridge, at the Duke of Wellington for 12 years and at Kudo’s Lounge for nine.

His children also play piano and he’s proud to say they are all very musical as well.

Of his career choice, Lorin says, “It’s worked out great with the kids and all; working parttime, for a full-time wage.”

Lorin is also in the process of writing a book on music; to take away the difficult aspects of learning and, instead, make it simple. He’s applied for a songwriter’s grant to help him out in his quest to make music fun, and is currently waiting for a response.

Over the span of his musical career Lorin has recorded three songs, and his goal is to record an album in the near future.

You can make music with Lorin at the Bellevue Inn Thursday to Saturday evenings during karaoke nights. You can also enjoy Wednesday afternoon jam sessions.

Carole says “parts of both playgrounds are swarmed” because equipment such as swing sets can accommodate only three children at a time.

Recess should be a time of physical activity and fun without having to wait in line.

The first phase of the playground upgrade will cost about $70,000. The plan is to start with higher-density play equipment and upgrade the surface underneath the equipment.

By Shannon Robin The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay isn’t meant to be as much about Rick Hansen as it is to celebrate the difference-makers across the nation. We should all be proud of those chosen to participate, and my coverage over the next three weeks is meant to share their stories of hope and inspiration.

I didn’t know what to expect of the relay or even how I was going to cover it. Would I be chasing people down the street on foot or driving from one starting point to the next? Publicity had been minimal, and I knew some were disappointed that Rick Hansen himself wouldn’t be part of this leg of the relay.

There wasn’t a lot of hoopla on a local level, but what I came to learn over the next three days was that each of our communities has more than its fair share of extraordinary people, and people with amazing stories behind them and ahead of them.

I pulled into Fort Macleod on Feb. 21 and was

surprised that no one was out to greet Lonnie Bissonnette, the endurance athlete who made the official entrance into Fort Macleod with the official relay medal around his neck.

Lonnie shared his story with a small group gathered at the health centre, and then the medal was on it’s way, first around the neck of Chantal Heffernan.

I was thrilled for an invitation to ride in the pace vehicle, which gave a unique opportunity of having a close-up view of each participant.

From this vantage point it was obvious how much the experience meant to each of the participants and it was a privilege to share in their joy as the procession moved through town.

Each medal bearer started their 250-metre walk/run/wheel alone, and then were joined by jubilant family members who were just as excited and moved by the experience.

Chantal Heffernan was first to wear the anniversary medal. Although she lives in Lethbridge, she is a public health nurse in Fort Macleod.

Chantal makes every effort to make healthy

choices for not only herself and her family, but also for her clients in the community.

“I recall being 10 years old and my whole school lined the street to watch Rick Hansen pass by,” she says. “He was and continues to be so inspiring to me and others. Thank you Rick!”

Chantal passed the medal to James Rutley of Pincher Creek, whose excitement was clear for the duration of his segment.

About 10 years ago James learned he had Type 2 diabetes. He had been tested himself after his brother was diagnosed.

James needed to use insulin for about a year, but through a conscious effort to improve his health through diet and exercise and the assistance of the Good Health team, he’s the only one the team knows of to successfully get off insulin.

Rick and his wife Carolyn participated in a 10-kilometre fundraising event through Team Diabetes last fall, and are planning to do more of the same in the future.

“It was really an honour to carry the medal,” he says. “The people who were wheelchair-bound

As the relay continued through downtown Fort Macleod, Chris Schamber of Lethbridge was the next medal bearer. Debbie Reed of Pincher Creek followed and passed the medal to Joanne Paton of Cowley. The last handoff, from Joanne to Rebecca Neels of Fort Macleod, was the most emotional of the day, as John Parr’s “Man in Motion” blared from the speakers of the pace vehicle. were inspirational and the energy they had was fantastic.”

James recalls seeing Rick Hansen and his entourage 25 years ago and says “it’s really cool to be part of the second one.”

With a huge hug and a strong show of brotherhood seldom seen between strangers, James passed the medal on to William Singer III of the Blood Reserve First Nation.

William’s walk was one of remembrance, in tribute to his stepmother Angela, his friend and mentor Everett Soop, and his brother Clarence Jr. All have passed on, but their acts of inspiration are not forgotten.

Angela broke her back in a car accident and Everett suffered from muscular dystrophy.

Everett had started a program in the mid 1980s to help the disabled be recognized as valuable members of the community. Later in life his own physical condition deteriorated until he couldn’t walk any more.

Clarence Jr. had cranial meningitis and suffered seizures on a regular basis. He was an inspiration to William because he didn’t see himself as being that different from anyone else, and wasn’t afraid to put himself out in the community.

As Rick Hansen provided inspiration to so many, Clarence Jr. was moved by the Man in Motion. “My brother talked about him all the time and looked up to him,” William says.

“It was an honour to be part of the relay as one of 7,000 people, and if my brother was alive he’d have been there,” said William.

William was proud to represent all the people who make a difference as well as his reserve in the relay.

Chris Schamber was the next medal bearer and he drew cheers from onlookers as he motored down the street. He showed off a bit with some zigzag patterns, which Lonnie Bissonette copied from behind with a grin on his face, as shown in the photo above.

The same year Rick Hansen was on the road with his Man in Motion Tour, Chris broke his neck in a diving accident. He says, “For the first decade after my accident I really didn’t know what I could or couldn’t do.”

Eventually, Chris went back to school to study engineering and drafting. He was fortunate to have strong supporters who helped him start his own business. Now he works with municipalities, including the City of Lethbridge, to make build-

ings and other facilities more accessible.

Chris says he averages 1,000 miles per year in his motorized chair, and draws on his own experiences, and knowledge gained from other people with disabilities, in his work.

“It was a great experience to be able to carry the medal for the short distance I did,” he says.

“Rick Hansen is a great inpiration to a lot of people.”

The highlight of the event for Chris was meeting Rick in Calgary a few days after the Fort Macleod relay ended. They had a chance to chat which Chris describes as “a great honour.”

Waterton Park Companion

Dave Birrell of Nanton has taken his interest in the Rocky Mountains in several directions. He has written books, created audio tours, acts as an interpretive guide and has developed a website that provides detailed information on 1,560 peaks.

With the help of his son-in-law Jay Fjestad, Dave has moved into the world of online and mobile applications or “apps.”

Jay is a United Nations pilot stationed in Kabul, leaving him with downtime that needs to be filled. Dave already had the extensive data required to pull something like this off, so Jay used his spare time to figure out how to create applications.

Their latest, the Waterton Park Companion, is available through the Apple

iStore for $2.99.

Basic information includes tips about the park and mountains in general, wildlife and ecoregions, hiking, and national historic sites.

As Dave says, “the meat is in the map function.” The interactive map function shows detailed points of interest and each mountain in the park area.

Tap on a mountain peak once and you’re shown its name and elevation. Tap it again for detailed information and photos. The same applies for the information viewpoints.

Cowley to Nanton continued from page 7 bolstered his determination “to keep on going” to make a difference in people’s lives and “to make the future better.”

Debbie Reed of Pincher Creek accepted the medal with a huge grin on her face. I watched for the tears she had told me in advance would likely pour, but instead her smile was contagious and she actually danced down the road.

Debbie is a firm believer that those who are provided for and don’t have to work need to be out and active in their communities. She gives back to her community through donations to the food bank and women’s shelter, fundraising for various projects such as the new curling rink, Lions Club participation, and promoting youth involvement whenever she can.

Rick Hansen has been an inspirational figure for her as she has taken a journey to improve her health through diet and exercise. Doors have opened for Debbie through her dedicated efforts, and she is motivating others with her success.

One of her favourite moments of accomplishment was climbing a mountain with her husband, and she was thrilled that he was able to be at the relay with her.

While disappointed at first that Rick wasn’t going to be at the relay in person, Debbie took inspiration and pride away from the recorded message shown to the participants before the relay started.

Debbie has been motivated by his message that this relay is about the difference that many people in motion can make, and says, “We need to realize that every little thing you do will make a difference.” She adds, “You don’t need to support the celebrity to support the cause.”

The experience has motivated Debbie to move forward on a plan to get people her age more actively involved in volunteering in the community. She says, “We can all do something, and

if everyone does just a little bit then we’ll have the benefit of many in motion.”

Joanne Paton of Cowley received the medal and a big hug from Debbie. Several times during her walk she held the medal and looked at it in disbelief.

Joanne followed Rick’s original trek and says, “I felt it would be neat to be part of history – which it was.”

During her segment, one of the relay team members asked how she felt at that moment. She told him, “I felt so honoured I could cry,” as she tried to convey her sense of pride.

Joanne was moved by meeting Rebecca Neels, who said when introducing herself, “Someone nominated me and I don’t know why.” Joanne said that after meeting the bubbly and positive teenager, everyone in the room knew why.

Looking forward, Joanne is currently learning sign language to communicate with a student doing work experience at her business. The relay experience has given her a push to learn something new that will be a benefit to others as she improves her communication skills.

The lump in my throat was huge, and the tears I’d been holding back throughout the afternoon made their appearance as Joanne passed the medal to 15-year-old Rebecca Neels of Fort Macleod. I wasn’t the only one in need of Kleenex as I looked around the crowd of people who had gathered to cheer Rebecca on.

The hug was heartfelt, then Joanne stepped back to let Rebecca wheel on to the blaring notes of John Parr’s “Man in Motion.”

Rebecca’s parents Steve and Karen walked on the sidelines for a bit with pure pride shining through their tears before the family joined Rebecca on the road.

Rebecca was nominated anonymously to participate in the relay, and being chosen as the final medal bearer of the day was fitting as Rebecca

says “I live by Rick’s example.”

She’s been a fan of what Rick stands for since seeing the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics when he brought the flame into the stadium.

Rebecca was full of giggles during our phone conversation, and says, “I’m still on an all-time high.”

“As I was meeting all of these really cool people and hearing their stories I had all kinds of thoughts running through my mind, and I wondered why am I here? Everyone was so full of positive attitude!”

The experience is one she’ll never forget.

Right now she is a celebrity of sorts in town as strangers ask her about the relay. She plans to put her medal, track suit and media clippings into a shadow box, but the memories will always be close at hand.

Rebecca says “as teens we belittle ourselves and can crush ourselves down to an all-time low at points in life when you feel unaccepted. Oh, wow, it feels so good to have this kind of positive reinforcement!”

The day wrapped up with a few words at the arena before Rebecca had to pass the medal back to Lonnie and accept her replica.

I thought there would be time to introduce myself to the medal bearers and start the process of learning their stories, but the crowd dissipated quickly. I would learn the next day this would be a challenge of following the relay.

I had lots of food for thought on the drive back to Pincher Creek. The raw emotion and the impact it had on me were more intense than I had anticipated and I was grateful for the opportunity to view the relay from the vantage point of the pace vehicle.

Next week, part two of the story will cover day 183 of the relay as it moved from Fort Macleod to Claresholm.

What is a tax-free savings account?

By Steven Barfuss H&R Block Manager A 2011 survey by ING Direct showed more than half of Canadians have not opened a tax-free savings account. Introduced in 2009, the TFSA is a tax shelter that allows taxpayers to deposit up to $5,000 per calendar year and not need to report the income or dividends earned by the account.

For Canadians looking to save more, there are tax implications to consider before making a financial plan for your money. The Canada Tax Act says all investment income is considered taxable. This includes interest earned on savings in bank accounts or in savings bonds. So if someone had any savings, they usually received a T5 slip around tax time and the income was included on their tax return.

Now, Canadians who are 18 years of age or older can open a TFSA. The TFSA is different than registered retirement savings plans. Any contributions to an RRSP are tax deductible. If

someone made a $5,000 RRSP contribution and their annual income is $40,000, they could expect a federal tax savings of $750. This is not the case for a TFSA. Initially, the tax savings on a TFSA may not add up to huge amounts. With a deposit of $5,000 in the account on Jan. 1, 2011, earning 1.5 per cent interest, about $75 of interest is sheltered in the first year.

Whether or not someone should contribute to a TFSA depends on their situation. It is not meant to be an everyday savings account, and there are penalties if they over-contribute to their account.

But a TFSA provides more flexibility if they need to withdraw money.

There is no penalty for withdrawing funds at any time, and they still save up to $5,000 for the year. For example, if someone had $5,000 in the account in January and then withdrew $2,000 in June, they could still redeposit $2,000 the following year with no penalty.

A withdrawal from an RRSP has tax implica-

tions and it usually takes longer to withdraw funds.

On the tax side, there are several things to consider. Are you expecting your income to increase or decrease in the next year? Are you going to be able to contribute the maximum amount to your RRSP? Are you planning to buy your first home and take advantage of the Home Buyers Plan? Do you need easy access to your money in case of emergencies? These are all questions to consider when deciding whether to open a TFSA. But if there is $5,000 or less in a savings account, it is a good idea to transfer it to a similar TFSA. This means the money earned in interest is tax free and will not need to be claimed as income on a tax return.

WCCHS principal has new position Darryl Seguin has been appointed associate superintendent, administration services, with Livingstone Range School Division. In this position, he will have responsibility for human resources, teacher mentorship, labour negotiations, threat assessment and safety. He will join the senior management team in August, leaving behind his position as principal of Willow Creek Composite High School in Claresholm.

“I feel that one of my strengths is my integrity and the ability to build trusting relationships with others I work with,” Darryl says. This trait will serve him well in his new position.

Darryl has taught in several Alberta elementary and junior high schools, and was principal at Cresomere School and G.R. Davis School prior to his current position at WCCHS. “My biggest accomplishment, I believe,

has been the work I’ve been able to do around school improvement,” he says. “I’ve been able to take schools that have been struggling, and over time, move them to environments where kids feel safe and are getting a great education, and the culture of the school has improved immensely.”

To make these kinds of significant and lasting changes takes a leader who works well with all levels of the school community.

Darryl says, “Mostly, I think I’ll miss the daily close interactions with students. They have some neat personalities that make them fun to work with and be around, and I’ll miss seeing them grow over the years.”

“I believe that Darryl’s past knowledge and experience have prepared him well for this position,” says superintendent Ellie Elliott. “I know that he will serve Livingstone Range staff and students with integrity and respect.”

By Robert and Alaina Evans The Crowsnest Pass Peewee A Thunder team is made up of five second-year players and 10 first-year players.

The 2011-12 hockey season for them has been a successful one. The Thunder finished on top of the A division in regular season play.

Prior to league playoffs, the Thunder recorded 30 wins, five losses and two ties.

The peewees earned a bye in the first round of the Spud League peewee A playoffs. The second round will be total-points in two games, against worthy opponents the Redcliff Grizzlies.

Throughout the regular season, other hockey tournaments and Spud League playoffs, the team has participated in Hockey Alberta peewee D provincial playdowns. Another success! The Thunder are the Zone 5 champs, with six wins, no losses and no ties.

The Thunder are proud to represent Zone 5, and the Crowsnest Pass, in the Hockey Alberta provincial peewee D tournament March 16 to 18 in Black Diamond.

This will be the second time this squadron of kids have attended a Hockey Alberta provincial tournament together. In the 2009-10 season they won silver at the atom C tournament in Viking.

Their goal, this time, is gold.

HIGH-CLASS DEFENSE Assume you’re East, defending against three notrump. You might not agree with North’s opening bid, but there’s nothing you can do about that. West leads a heart, which you win with the ace. What should you play next?

(Remember, you see only the dummy’s hand and your own.)

It would seem you have no chance to stop the contract unless your side can quickly snatch four club tricks. Dummy has nine practically sure tricks in plain view. So, acting on this basis, you could return a low club hoping to find your partner with three or four clubs to the king (almost impossible in view of South’s one-notrump bid).

But observe what happens if you do this.

Declarer follows low -- there is no reason to risk playing the king -- and West wins the club with the jack. West returns a club to your ace, and the party is over. South makes four notrump.

Now let’s go back to trick two. Instead of leading the three of clubs, let’s say you lead the queen! Of course, South can make the contract by playing the king, but is he likely to do that?

He might think you have the Q-J-9-x(-x) of clubs and refuse to cover the queen. If he ducks, you continue with the three. What will South do this time? If he thinks you started with Q-J-9-3, he will follow low again, counting on dummy’s ten to force West’s ace. The contract is then defeated when partner wins with the jack and returns another club.

Of course, South might guess correctly and play his king on either the first or second club lead. The important point, though, is that by playing your clubs in the suggested fashion, you give declarer a chance to go wrong. 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray a 12hole muffin pan with butter-flavored cooking spray or line with paper liners.

2. In large bowl, combine flour, oats, raisins, sugar substitute, baking powder, baking soda and apple pie spice.

In a small bowl, combine milk, sour cream, applesauce and egg. Mix well with a fork to combine.

3. Add milk mixture to flour mixture.

Mix just until moistened (batter will be lumpy). Evenly divide batter into prepared muffin wells. Bake 18 to 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center of muffin comes out clean.

4. Place pan on a wire rack and let set 5 minutes. Remove muffins from pan and continue cooling on rack. Makes 12 servings.

graced spy brought back into the agency to ferret out a double agent. It’s dense, dark and darn good for those who can get their teeth into it.

This is as far from 007 as a British espionage thriller can get. Make no mistake, it is a thriller -- in its own, gaunt, dimly lit, grey-skies kind of way. The twisted mysteries and intrigue can pay off as much as any chase-scene with a rocketpowered submarine/automobile.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Muppets” (PG) -- The felt hasn’t faded a bit. The Muppets return with all of their innocence and silliness without coming off as too dated. The story follows Walter, a young, puppet-like fellow, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) as they go on a journey to reunite the Muppets and save the Muppet Theatre from evil oil tycoons.

A bit of self-referential humor helps blow the dust off the franchise, but the rest of the show is pure new energy. The freshness has even been endorsed by the Academy, as “The Muppets” won the Oscar for best original song. Segel, who helped write the script, is a musically inclined, goofy-grin kind of guy who beams real admiration for the Muppets and fits right in as a human sidekick.

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (R) -- David Fincher (“Fight Club,” “Se7en”) directs this mystery-novel adaptation

with his eye for the dark and grungy.

A wealthy old businessman calls on a legally troubled journalist (Daniel Craig) to solve a decades-old missing-person mystery. Craig enlists the help of the titular inked young woman (Rooney Mara), a damaged, deviant, sneering, whip-smart computer hacker.

The film stumbles a bit in storytelling, but sells it all on style. If complicated characters and relationships taking a grim look at the demons beneath surface of Swedish society appeal to you, then pick up the book or see the Swedish film adaptation. If a slightly sillier, more veneered version is all you have time for, then this Hollywood take will do fine.

“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (R) -- This British spy flick is all about subtlety, paranoia and brain-raking anxiety. Gary Oldman plays George Smiley, a dis-

When the respective parents meet in a nice Brooklyn apartment to settle things amicably and maturely, things spiral into a collective tantrum by the supposedly put-together couples. Jodie Foster, John C. Riley, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz all dig into their roles, but if you’re not pulled in by the forced smiles and underlying hypocrisies, you’ll be put to sleep by this single-setting dark comedy.

Handling Lump-Sum Benefits and Taxes If you began receiving Social Security Disability Insurance payments in 2011, you could have a problem when you file your tax return and end up paying too much.

Here’s why: Since it takes so long to begin receiving SSDI benefits, it’s possible that you’ll receive a one-time lump-sum payment that includes back payments for previous years. Those benefits are taxable income, and you could pay taxes at a rate up to a whopping 50 percent. The calculation to determine your income includes any other income you have.

According to a news release by the Allsup Disability Life Planning Center, an average SSDI benefit is $1,073, which comes to

$12,876 for the year. For a couple, a total income of more than $19,000 (or $9,950 for an individual) requires that a tax return be filed.

However, if you receive a large lump-sum payment and report that, as well as any other income, you could end up paying too much in taxes.

This is where you’ll need the help of a tax preparer or tax preparation software to complete your return: You’re allowed to spread that lump-sum income out over previous years.

You’ll receive a Form 1099 showing the amount of SSDI income you received, with the amount showing in Box 3.

If you want to complete your return yourself or read about filing to get an estimate of the tax you might owe, go online to the Internal Revenue Service website at irs.gov and search for Publication 915. The name is “Social Security and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits.” Look for the LumpSum Election on page 11 for detailed instructions on the Worksheets 1 through 4 that need to be filled out. Scroll down and look for the examples of the worksheets. The result of the calculations on

those worksheets determine which election method will get you the lowest tax.

Publication 915 contains other helpful information as well. If you receive a FORM SSA-1042S Social Security Benefit Statement and don’t understand the numbers in the various boxes, the publication explains each one.

If you receive railroad retirement benefits on FORM RRB-1099, this publication explains the figures in each of the 11 boxes.

If you do your taxes yourself and have a question, you can contact the IRS at 1-800829-1040. Your best bet, however, if you’ve received a lump-sum benefit, is to get help from a tax preparer.

Homemade Gelatin Citrus Snacks It’s citrus time! Prepare for your family’s next snack attack with 100 percent pure fruit juice magically transformed into whimsical and eye-catching citrus bowls and slices using unflavored gelatin and scooped out orange, lemon, lime or grapefruit halves.

Later, when you hear a mid-afternoon “I’m hungry” groan, say, “It sounds to me like it’s time to eat some art.”

Here’s how to make the healthy sunshine snack: Homemade Gelatin in Citrus Bowls Citrus Bowls First, prepare the scooped-out citrus halves. Choose two or more of the following depending on size: oranges, lemons, limes or grapefruit.

Cut fruit in half evenly lengthwise or around the circumference. Insert a paring knife just between the white pith and the fruit in each half, and remove the fruit pulp to form bowls. (Use removed fruit for salads or snacking as desired.)

For stability, set empty citrus bowls per-

fectly upright into small bowls or sections of a muffin tin. If citrus bowls are wobbly, carefully trim a bit off of the base, being careful not to pierce all the way through.

Set them aside while you prepare the gelatin.

Homemade Fruit Juice Gelatin 2 cups pure, 100 percent fruit juice 1-2 tablespoons honey 2 (1/4-ounce size) envelopes unflavored gelatin such as Knox brand 1. In a medium-size saucepan, heat 1 1/2 cups of juice. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.

2. While juice is heating up, stir remaining 1/2 cup of juice into two envelopes of unflavored gelatin in a medium bowl (preferably with a spout) with a spout and let stand for 1 minute. Add the hot fruit juice and stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Stir in honey.

3. Cool slightly, and pour into the pre-pre-

pared citrus bowls. Refrigerate until firm.

4. When set, serve with a spoon and eat the gelatin right out of the citrus bowl.

Or, slice into wedges with a sharp knife.

Makes 4-6 servings.

Alternate idea: Use 1 (3-ounce) box of gelatin such as Jell-O brand, as an alternative to homemade gelatin. Is It a Migraine?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had headaches since I was 12. I am now 32. I hear people talk about their migraine headaches and wonder if I might have them. What makes a headache a migraine headache? I take aspirin for my headaches. It helps, but not all that much. Are there special medicines for migraines? -- K.D. ANSWER: Yes, there are special migraine medicines, so it is important to determine if your headaches are true migraine headaches.

Some of the distinguishing attributes of migraines are the following: They begin before age 40. More women have them than men. The headache starts out with minor pain but often progresses to intense and incapacitating pain.

The word used to describe it is “throbbing.”

Nausea and vomiting frequently accompany it.

In a little more than half of migraine patients, the headache is on one side only. Bright lights and noise intensify the pain. Sufferers try to find a dark, quiet room where they can lie down until the headache goes, and that can take four to 72 hours.

Migraine sufferers can identify triggers that bring on their headaches. Stress, missing a meal, too much or too little sleep, menstrual periods, bright lights, certain odors like cigarette smoke or perfume and fatigue are some of the things that start a migraine. Alcohol -- beer and red wine in particular -- chocolate, some cheeses and cured meats like hot dogs, sausage and bacon are triggers for some.

Aspirin, Tylenol, Midrin and naproxen alleviate mild migraines. Cafergot is a migraine standby. A group of newer drugs are especially good for migraine sufferers. Seven of them are available. Some names are Imitrex, Maxalt and Zomig. Imitrex comes as a nasal spray and as an injection, administered like insulin. Zomig also comes as a nasal spray. This is a godsend for those who become sick to the stomach along with the headache.

Not all migraine headaches produce all the signs and symptoms I mentioned, but if you have more than two of these characteristic symptoms, it’s a good bet that you suffer from migraines.

DONOHUE: Many of my friends take aspirin for the prevention of a heart attack or stroke. I decided I should join them. Is this a wise move? -- K.H. ANSWER: Aspirin and similar drugs are the rule for prevention of heart attacks and certain strokes. The aspirin dose in greatest use is 81 mg -- low-dose aspirin. Three different regimens for the prevention of stroke are acceptable: Plavix, aspirin or aspirin combined with sustainedrelease dipyridamole. The aspirin-dipyridamole combination comes in one tablet called Aggrenox. Note that these are for prevention of second heart attacks and strokes.

For the prevention of a first heart attack or stroke, patients should consult their doctor, who will evaluate each patient’s risk. Based on that, the doctor will recommend a regimen that’s appropriate. Baked Chocolate Pudding

Vanilla-Pecan Ice Cream Torte

This easy yet impressive dessert can be made in advance and heated when you’re ready to serve it, making it the perfect choice when you’re hosting a large group. The splash of framboise in the pudding adds an elegant touch.

1 cup pecan halves, toasted and cooled 20 gingersnap cookies 2 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons margarine, melted, substitute butter 3 pints vanilla ice cream 2 tablespoons pumpkin-pie spice 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus more for greasing 3/4 cup good-quality cocoa powder 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 4 extra-large eggs, at room temperature 2 cups sugar 1 vanilla bean, split, seeds scraped 1 tablespoon framboise liqueur (optional) Vanilla ice cream, for serving

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Reserve 16 pecan halves for garnish. In food processor with knife blade attached, blend remaining pecan halves with gingersnaps and sugar until mixture is finely ground.

2. In 9-inch springform pan, with fork, stir cookie mixture and melted margarine or butter until moistened. With hand, press mixture onto bottom of pan.

3. Bake crust 8 minutes. Cool completely on wire rack.

4. Let ice cream soften on counter 20 minutes. In large bowl, mix softened ice cream and pumpkin-pie spice until blended; spread over crust. Place pecan halves around top edge of torte. Cover torte and freeze at least overnight or up to 1 week.

5. To serve, let frozen torte stand at room temperature about 15 minutes for easier slicing. Remove side of springform pan. Serves 16.

2. Into medium bowl, sift together cocoa powder and flour. In large bowl, with mixer on medium-high speed, beat eggs and sugar 5 to 10 minutes or until very thick and light yellow.

3. Reduce speed to low; add vanilla seeds, framboise (if using), and cocoa mixture. Mix just until combined. Slowly pour in butter; mix just until combined.

4. Pour mixture into prepared dish set in larger baking pan. Add hot tap water to pan to come halfway up side of dish.

5. Bake exactly 1 hour. A toothpick inserted 2 inches from side will come out clean. Center will appear very under-baked. Cool completely.

By JoAnn Derson • Use a muffin pan to make cookie cups for ice cream or fruit. Just flip your muffin pan over, and press dough over the upturned wells. It will puff up a little, but once it settles will make very nice bowls. I do this with pizza dough as well. Prebake for a few minutes to form the bowl, then fill with ingredients and complete baking.

• If you can put a tension rod in the cabinet under your sink, you can use it to hang spray bottles for extra storage. It’s amazing how much space it clears up, and it’s easy to find the bottle you need.

• Got popcorn? For a healthier (and much less expensive) version, go old school: Put popping-corn kernels in a regular brown paper bag, seal bag, then microwave.

• “Bread tags (the little plastic clips that hold bread bags closed) make great cord organizers when you are using a multiple-outlet power strip. Write the kind of device (e.g. TV, VCR, Wii) on the tag, then clip it to the plug end of the cord. When you need to unplug, it’ll be easy to see which is which.” -- C.C. in Ohio • Travel a lot? Make use of those shower caps by pairing up shoes and using the shower cap to hold them together while simultaneously protecting your clothes from the shoe bottoms. Smart!

I make my own now, using a box lid. The lids for paper cartons work really well. Cut a cross into the lid top with a razor or carpet knife, and press down. Make it the size of a cupcake.

By Samantha Mazzotta Even Insulated Pipes Can Freeze Q: Regarding your recent column on pipe insulation and freezing: You blew it this time. As a chemical engineer who has worked with construction and operation of various facilities, I can categorically tell you that pipe insulation will not prevent pipes from freezing -- particularly where power and heat are not available.

Pipe insulation will slow the transfer of heat and cold into or out of piping. However, if heat is not available for a sufficient time, the water in the pipe will freeze if the surrounding air temperature is below 32 F. It might take awhile, but it will freeze.

The simplest method for preventing damage to piping systems is to drain the piping as fully as possible, thereby keeping any remaining water from damaging the pipes when it freezes. The freezing water will simply expand into the voids and not split or break the piping.

When heat is again available, the warming will melt the frozen water. Adding water back into the piping will permit it to operate as usual, eventually. I had this experience in my house back in the ‘80s during a massive and long power outage. I drained the water and heating lines as best I could. When power came back I started the boiler, after pressuring that system, and waited. Slowly, the three heating zones came back into operation -- except for about 20 feet of heating pipe in the uninsulated space in the attic.

That took days and the sun’s heat to return to normal operation.

However, in a heated garage with pipe insulation, leaving the garage door open (accidentally) in 15 F weather did not protect the piping. Luckily only a split in a 2-foot length of pipe needed replacement.

I worry that your column will give a false sense of security to homeowners who are not engineers or tradespeople and will find frozen and split lines after an outage. -- Ralph M., via email A: You told them, Ralph, and I thank you! While pipe insulation slows heat or cold transfer -- keeping hot water inside the pipes from cooling more quickly as it travels through unheated spaces -- it should not be relied upon to prevent pipes from freezing during prolonged cold spells. Always check the entire run, including insulated sections, when monitoring for frozen pipes.

HOME TIP: As spring approaches, double check pipe runs for damage before turning on water to sections that were shut off for winter, such as exterior spigots.

NORTH AFRICAN-STYLE FISH WITH COUSCOUS 2 tablespoons olive oil

2 red onions, sliced into thin rings 2 tablespoons raisins 3 tablespoons salted, roasted cashew nuts 1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced into thick rings 1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and sliced into thick rings 1 green bell pepper, seeded and sliced into thick rings 4 fresh, firm, ripe tomatoes, blanched, peeled, seeded and sliced into thick rounds 1-1/2 cups fish or vegetable stock, mixed with 3/4 cup water 1-1/2 pounds U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish, tilapia, cod, or salmon fillets, cut into 1 1/4 inch cubes 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped Couscous 2 cups quick-cooking couscous 2 cups vegetable stock or water, boiling 2 teaspoons whipped butter 1/4 cup diced carrots 1/4 cup pine nuts 1/4 cup dried currants 2 green onions, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt 1. Heat half the oil in a large, heavy skillet, and saute half the onions on medium to high heat for 6 to 8 minutes, or until very dark golden, stirring constantly. Using a slotted spoon, remove fried onions from the oil, place on paper towels and set aside.

Fry raisins in the same hot oil until they plump. Remove with the slotted spoon and add to fried onions. Fry the cashews for

about 1 minute. Remove and add to raisinand-onion mix.

2. Add the remaining oil to the skillet and fry remaining half of onions until golden.

Add bell peppers and continue cooking for about 10 minutes, or until peppers are soft.

Add the tomatoes and stock, partially cover and cook for about 10 minutes on medium to low heat.

3. Stir fish through the onion and pepper mixture. Taste and season with salt, pepper and cayenne pepper. Continue simmering for 10 minutes, or until the fish is tender.

Do not forget to stir periodically to prevent sticking.

4. To make the couscous, place the couscous grains in a large, deep dish with a lid.

Pour in the boiling stock and stir in butter, carrots, scallions, pine nuts, dried currants and salt. Cover and set aside to keep warm for about 15 minutes so the couscous can absorb liquid and swell up. Fluff couscous by raking through it with a fork.

5. Carefully pour the fish mixture over the couscous and gently fold it through to mix thoroughly into a colorful presentation.

Sprinkle with onion rings, raisins, cashew nuts and parsley. Serve immediately. • On March 19, 1952, the one-millionth Jeep is produced. The name “Jeep” is reportedly derived from the Army’s 1941 request that car manufacturers develop a “General Purpose” vehicle. “G.P.” turned to “Jeep” somewhere along the battle lines.

• On March 21, 1971, “The Andromeda Strain,” the first movie to use computer animation, opens. The sci-fi thriller, featuring scientists racing against time and an alien virus, was the first of many films to be made from a Michael Crichton book.

• On March 24, 1989, the worst oil spill in U.S. territory begins when the supertanker Exxon Valdez runs aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in Alaska.

Sick Cat Can’t Stop Pooping DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 8-yearold longhaired cat, “Buster,” has gas and diarrhea. He was given Flagyl for two months with no improvement.

Then he took three months of probiotics, and no improvement. Now he gets 5 mg of prednisone and 5 drops of Rescue Remedy daily. His butt has been shaved to help keep him clean, and I wash it once a day. Buster eats special cat food, but that doesn’t help his digestion either. We have quartersized circles of poop all over the house, and I am breaking my back cleaning the carpet and floor. My husband says to euthanize him. What more can I do? -- Pat R., via email DEAR PAT: Such long-term diarrhea is certainly cause for concern, and I know it can be intensely frustrating to care for and clean up after a sick cat. Please convince your husband

to shelve the euthanasia suggestion, however.

Buster sounds like he has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-- a term that describes a collection of symptoms, such as frequent (or constant) diarrhea, but not a specific cause.

Flagyl is a common treatment for IBD, as is prednisone. Rescue Remedy is a natural remedy to calm pets.

Buster’s vet should run a number of tests, if he or she hasn’t already, to rule out bacterial infection, parasites or a metabolic condition. If a conclusive cause isn’t found, you must try and find ways to mitigate his symptoms.

The change in diet also is recommended in case a food allergy is the problem. You’re feeding Buster a specialty cat food, but if it isn’t working, try other brands or even try making home-cooked cat food.

Additional information can be found online. And realize you’re not alone: Many owners are caring for cats with IBD. Please don’t give up on Buster.
