My Little Corner I received an email last weekend that served as a reminder of the impact adults have on their own children and other young people they may have the opportunity to work with.

I spent 15 years sharing my love of music with hundreds of students, from the ages of two to 86, through private and group lessons.

I worked hard to inject creativity and fun into my lessons and enjoyed a close rapport with the majority of my students.

The message I’m referring to came from a young woman named Laurel. I met her almost 20 years ago when she started piano lessons, along with her siblings Rosemary and William.

Over the years these kids pretty much became members of our household, and bonded closely with my daughter.

It always gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling when former students drop me a line or pop in for a visit.

My daughter Jaiden and I enjoyed a visit with Laurel’s entire family when we went home to Saskatchewan for Christmas last year.

A few months ago, Laurel asked for a letter of reference as she had applied for a volunteer position teaching music in Regina. I had no doubt she would do a great job, so it was a simple letter to write.

The message I received from Laurel on the weekend was to let me know she had indeed been chosen for the position. Her excitement and enthusiasm were obvious.

A single sentence is one I’ll treasure. She wrote, “I can’t thank you enough, as I often reflect on your teaching skills and style to enhance their lesson time and motivation.”

Knowing that my efforts of many years ago are being carried forward through this young woman is truly heartwarming.

I’m not trying to blow my own horn here!

Instead, I’d like to encourage you to blow the horn for someone who has made a difference in your life or a family member’s life.

I’m sure it’s easy to recall a few teachers, coaches, parents, grandparents or mentors who took the time to share their knowledge with you.

These people shaped who we became, and likewise we are responsible for shaping who our children become. Not just your biological children, but the children of the community.

It’s important, as well, that we teach our children to be grateful and to truly appreciate what adults outside of our homes do for them.

Over the past few weeks there has been an almost endless stream of athletic accomplishments.

The end result is typically determined by the effort of the kids, but backing that up with a solid foundation are their coaches, teachers, parents, family and fans.

I’ve seen some wonderful shows of gratitude and also some sad indifference.

A simple thank you goes a long way. That is, if it’s a meaningful thank you.

I’d like to invite our readers and their families to share words of thanks or stories about their mentors.

This could be a teacher, a coach, someone who helps with homework or who simply leads by example.

We’ll share the stories in our April 18 issue and you can be part of making someone’s day!

I encountered two inspirational teachers when I was in elementary school. Their belief in my abilities and ideas stayed with me long beyond Grade 2.

Years later I tracked them both down to let them know their teaching had a strong impact on me at the time and on the adult I came to be.

Thanks can never come too often or too late!

As the story of the Rick Hansen relay participants continues, a few have asked why it’s “dragging on so long.”

Each participant was chosen based on being a community leader, and most often these people don’t receive the recognition they deserve.

The relay itself may be old news, but the stories of the individuals are current events.

STB mailbox Thunder struck For the first time in Crowsnest Pass history a local team has been crowned provincial champions.

After a five-game undefeated championship bout, our peewee hockey team has achieved the pinnacle of minor hockey.

It was certainly a battle, as evident from the bumps, bruises and war wounds, but all that was forgotten when their gloves and sticks were tossed in the air and the banner was held high.

They now can hold their heads high as not only are they champions, but trailblazers for future generations of champions.

Congratulations to the entire team – you have made us proud!

Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey Association Sabres bring home silver The girls’ 1A provincial basketball tournament was a tremendous success and a great weekend for all!

Livingstone Sabres won silver, missing gold by only two points. The girls played exceedingly well all weekend and were coached skilfully by Paul Erickson and Jim Proudfoot, with Debbie Erickson managing the team.

The gold medal went to the Ryley Rebels.

Thanks to Matthew Halton High School staff and students for the use of their wonderful facility.

A special thanks to our extraordinary provincials committee who did an excellent job organizing the event!

Terri Donald, Livingstone School Bomber Command Memorial On March 15, Bomber Command Museum of Canada director Karl Kjarsgaard of Nanton and video producer Jim Blondeau visited the Royal Air Force Bomber Command Memorial construction site in London.

Jim has produced an excellent video that includes overhead shots of the site under construction, and interviews with those involved in the memorial project, including architect Liam O’Connor.

The video is an excellent way to gain an understanding of the scale and importance of the memorial. The significance of the very special aluminum contributed by the Bomber Command Museum of Canada is discussed, as is Canada’s contribution to Bomber Command. Our museum is honoured to have provided several hundred pounds of aluminum, recovered from 426 Squadron RCAF Halifax LW682, and this will be incorporated into the ceiling of the memorial.

The Bomber Command Museum of Canada would like to remind all Canadians and our friends in the UK of the fact that almost 20 per cent of the 55,573 airmen being honoured by this memorial were Canadians.

Although Canada’s Bomber Command Memorial at our museum is a fitting national monument, the London memorial will also stand as a tribute to our country’s contribution and sacrifice.

Documenting a labour of love

By Amber Lee Mohl and Shannon Robin It’s every kid’s right to just be a kid. And the Hank Planger Community Playground lets kids do just that.

Pincher Creek boasts a fantastic playground built over the summer of 2010 thanks to outstanding community efforts.

With a rubber surface for wheelchair accessibility and activity panels for kids with sensory needs, the playground was built to accommodate each and every child.

In February 2010, a group of parents formed the Hank Planger Community Playground Group to address the need for a new playground that would be accessible everyone.

Committee chair Chelan Citrigno was joined by Jacqui Bruns, Colette Sinnott, Terri Robbins, Jennifer Parker, Kayne Evans, Ron Schmidt and Michael Gouthro and the group pulled off the incredible feat of building the park only four months after fundraising began.

Partnering with the national organization Let Them Be Kids meant half the equipment would be paid for, but the group had to cover all other costs such as gravel and grass, along with supplying all of the labour.

The community stepped up, and “the whole thing was built in June 2010,” says committee member Jacqui Bruns.

“There was money left over, so we went back to the community and asked if there was anything we had missed.”

This led to a second phase of the park which includes a full outdoor fitness centre, wheelchair and stroller accessibility, and a sensory area. Phase 2 was completed in June of 2011.

The playground is located on the grounds of St. Michael’s school, but is there for the entire community to use and enjoy.

“It’s a hub for families to spend time together – parents can work out in the fitness park while their kids play,” Jacqui says.

The donations and hard work of many volunteers that made the playground a reality are a testament to the pride Pincher Creek residents have in their community.

Let Them Be Kids “gives you a model of success,”

The pride and commitment demonstrated by everyone who supported the project will soon be showcased nationwide!

“In June 2010 we built the whole thing, in June 2011 we added phase two, and in June 2012 we’ll be screening a documentary featuring what we did in our town,” Jacqui says.

The full-length film, which will be shown locally June 10, shares the story of five Canadian communities and their LTBK projects. Pincher Creek happens to be one of them.

“There are 10,000 DVDs of the documentary that will be sent out to every town, city, MD and school division in Canada,” Jacqui says.

“This will highlight that Pincher Creek really is a great place to live.”

“I think it’s pretty big that we were remembered out of more than 125 projects,” she says. “It’s huge exposure for the town to get this kind of recognition for free.”

According to the LTBK website, “The purpose of the film is to inspire community action and community improvement across Canada.”

The movie is being entered in major film festivals across North America, which will give Pincher Creek and its volunteers international exposure.

Going up?

The fundraising thermometer at the Pincher Creek Legion has been steadily rising as the organization nears completion of its elevator installation project.

MLA Evan Berger was on hand last Friday to present the Legion with a cheque for $88,193 from the Community Facility Enhancement Program.

He ventured to the basement of the building with Legion president Dick Waywood to check out the elevator shaft.

The grant provides significant support for the project from the bottom up.

According to Dick, the goal of the project “is to provide better accessibility from the basement to the second floor of the building.” He points out that often tables are moved from the basement to the upper level and the elevator will make this

an easier and safer job.

Approximately $202,000 has been raised through personal, service club and business donations, grants, and Legion fundraising activities, he says.

Considering expenses to date, there is a shortfall of about $7,000 which he hopes will be covered by a pending federal grant.

The overall goal of $225,000, when attained, should cover renovations required to both the upper and lower levels due to the elevator construction. This will also enhance the facility.

Fundraising efforts began in February 2011, and construction started last fall.

Installation of the elevator is expected to begin by the second week of April, and it should be operational by the end of the month.

CNP Food Bank celebrates new home

By Tom Head The Crownest Food Bank Society operates from a new stand-alone building at 11910 29th Ave. in Blairmore.

We provide our services to all of the Crowsnest Pass from the border to Cowley, but do not turn away people from outside our core area.

The building was made possible by the generous donations of many corporations and individuals. Teck made a $100,000 donation (which was the largest), and we also received an anonymous donation of almost $60,000.

Other corporate donations and the very

generous support of the residents of the area made our new building possible.

The building is just over 1,900 square feet in size. We have in-floor heating and extra insulation in the walls and ceiling for energy efficiency.

We are open three days a week – Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – to provide services to our clients.

We have a part-time paid co-ordinator, Carmellia (Cooki) Saretzky, who has been with us for over five years.

Food bank usage continues to increase not only here but elsewhere across Canada.

The Bunny Bonspiel is an annual event that attracts curlers of every calibre, including world champions such as Brock Virtue Jr. and Kevin Koe, who won the Alberta provincial championship this year.

You don’t have to be a professional to participate in the Bunny Bonspiel; this event has a long history of bringing teams together for fun and friendship.

In fact, some local families have had someone in the Bunny Bonspiel right from the very beginning 65 years ago!

Everyone is encouraged to come up to the Crowsnest Curling Club in Coleman April 5-8 to witness some fantastic curling first-hand.

You never know, you may run into someone you haven’t seen in a long time.

Soul skier has his eye on Korea

By Amber Lee Mohl For Philip Mullen of Coleman, skiing is a passion. He comes from a tight-knit family that is proud to support his talent and encourage him every step of the way.

Philip, originally from Calgary, has been skiing for nine years with the Special Olympics.

When his parents, Dan and Sandra, decided to look into what was available with the Special Olympics, they found he had a natural talent for skiing and the rest, as they say, is history.

After moving to the Crowsnest Pass, Philip’s family continued to drive back to Calgary so he could practise his skiing skills. Soon after, Philip began practising at Castle Mountain, where he continues to be a big part of the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers program.

Philip’s first competition took place in Drumheller, where he won his first medal.

“He was up against people who had been doing this for years,” says Sandra. “But, his talent shone through and he won silver!”

Philip is quick to show his many medals and share stories about people he’s met over the years. It’s hard not to get excited about the sport when he shares the videos and tales of his many skiing adventures.

“With cross-country skiing, weight lifting, horseback riding, curling … there are so many events that would really bring together the surrounding communities,” he says.

Sandra would also like to see more golf and baseball tournaments brought to the area.

Both agree that Philip has a natural talent, and Dan says he and his wife are committed to Philip and his sport.

“I’m what you’d consider a lifer.”

Claresholm health foundation is ready to party!

By Shannon Robin If you’ve ever reached Tara Bishoff ’s voice mail you know she’s one who gets excited about the projects of the Claresholm and District Health Foundation.

Tara is coordinator of the foundation, and has been busy putting together the 13th annual banquet, auction and dance to be held at the Stavely Community Centre on Saturday.

This particular event was Tara’s first project when she started working for the foundation 13 years ago, and things change a little each year.

“The first effort involved an introduction of the machine the foundation was funding, talks and supper,” Tara says.

Soon the ladies service groups of Claresholm and Stavely were pooling their resources to bake pies. Leftovers became hot items on the auction block after dinner.

band to be included in the event. Music will be provided by husband and wife duo J.C. and Andy Plett. The Langdon couple is known as Room to Dance, and come highly recommended.

“I’m really excited because the band plays both country and classic rock tunes, and they take requests,” Tara says. “This means you can bring the whole gang and customize the evening.”

A variety of auctions will run throughout the evening, and Tara notes, “The donated items are wonderfully varied and diverse.”

On the block will be a cow hide, a unique 360-degree panoramic view of the interior of the Nanton Bomber Command Museum, barbecues, kids toys, 1,500-count sheets, a special occasion rental certificate, Calgary Stampede memorabilia, quilts and more. Oh, and don’t forget the pies!

“It’s so exciting!” Tara exclaims. “It’s all coming together and there’s something for everyone.

It’s a wonderful community effort.”

The fundraising goal is $41,000 to cover the cost of a portable ultrasound machine. The bedside diagnostic tool produces high-definition pictures that can be used in diagnosis, or can rule out an issue.

If locating a vein for intravenous insertion is an issue, the machine can even be a tool to make the job easy and stress free for both the patient and the nurse.

This piece of non-standard equipment is an enhancement to the Claresholm hospital, and Tara says she’s “grateful for the strong community support that allows our hospital to have these things.”

By Shannon Robin In the continuing tribute story to the participants in the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay, it’s still Day 183, or Feb. 23.

My camera battery died in Fort Macleod and in the time I took to stop at The Source to see if they had anything that might help me out, I almost missed the relay in Granum! The crew had their route planned down to the minute, actually to the second, and this was now the third leg of the day’s relay even though it was early in the afternoon.

Town councillor Walter Gripping was first to don the relay medallion in Granum. This was fitting as he had been the one involved with organizing the relay over the past year.

Walter says he’s “a bit of a PR man” and often looks after public events on behalf of the town.

Twenty years ago, a car accident left Walter hospitalized with back and neck injuries. After his orthopedic surgeon counted 101 spinal fractures they decided to stop counting.

“I was told I shouldn’t be able to walk,” he says. “So far I’ve been right and they’ve been wrong.”

The injury has left him with chronic pain – the first thing he’s aware of in the morning and the last at night. He says most people wouldn’t guess the type of injuries he has sustained because his disability isn’t readily apparent.

Walter saw Rick Hansen wheel through Calgary 25 years ago and says, “You have to admire the guy for sticking with it.”

Many years ago Walter decided to stop feeling sorry for himself because, as he says, “the only thing I can control is my attitude.”

“The more steps I took in the relay, the more important it became to me. Passing the medal to someone else who’s just getting started in life felt like passing the torch to a new generation.”

Walter passed the medal to Tammy DeMaereFurgason of Calgary, and the two shared a moment I witnessed many times over three days.

Megan Mahon’s photo above captures the instant kinship that existed between most of the medal bearers.

Tammy grew up in Granum, but she and Walter had met for the first time just that morning. The signifcance of the exchange is clear in the photo. It was another moment that put a huge

lump in my throat.

I wasn’t able to connect with Tammy prior to press time, but have been told that although she’s not identifiable in the school photo above, she was among the group waiting with Fran Hanson to meet Rick on the highway in 1987.

The medal passed from the young woman who had met Rick in person 25 years ago to the teacher who made that experience happen, which is pretty amazing.

Fran says, “It was really neat to revisit the Rick Hansen tour this way.” She was surprised and thrilled to find out a week before the relay that she had been nominated as a medal bearer.

She keeps the above photo as a reminder of the very cold day when she stood out on the highway with a group of school kids to meet Rick.

“He couldn’t stop for long, but it was great to meet him,” she says.

She’s considering donating the photo and her relay outfit to the local museum.

Fran was a school teacher in Granum for 19 years, and now keeps herself busy as chairman of the Willow Creek Gospel Music Jamboree.

After developing Charcot foot last summer, Fran wasn’t sure if she’d be able to walk again.

This serious condition can result in amputation, so Fran is grateful to be walking at all, let alone walking in a meaningful event.

Assisted by her cane, she walked the 250metre relay leg with no problem.

By Tina Webber I recently had a conversation with a woman who does not know her own worth.

Although a generalization, men accept flaws in their own character, personality or physique, whereas women tend to do the opposite by overlooking imperfections in men but not in themselves. Women try, sometimes obsessively, to achieve physical perfection. I do believe in the saying that you teach people how to treat you, so think well enough of yourself to expect no less than the best behaviour from others.

Envision an all-too-common scene at the beach where a man with a beer belly is playing a robust game of Frisbee, seemingly unaware of his bouncing belly. A woman on the same beach, unable to shed those last five pounds after the birth of her three children, worries about how she looks in her swimsuit. She is so self-conscious she just sits there watching the man with the beer belly enjoying the game.

This contradiction between the genders seems restricted to the human species. It is not the norm in the animal kingdom, where males have to be at their best to woo the females. Male birds show their finest plumage to attract a mate, and we have all seen rams butting heads in order to win the ewe.

Humans, however, incorporate a sad reversal of roles with females competing for males. What happened to the female gender that turned it around?

Did we all buy into the image of the woman who works outside the home, raises children, cooks and cleans, etc. – making this thought of as the norm?

In other words, women get to do more yet still do not think of themselves as valuable!

Perhaps we are not emphasizing this enough, because self-worth is a lesson we should instill in our children – boys to respect girls and girls to value themselves.

I think this is why I have had these conversations primarily with women who do not know their own worth and, sadly, are with men who treat them as inferiors.

I want to share this observation with those who need to understand the concept for themselves, their children or both.

I wish I had been taught the following in childhood instead of taking most of my life to understand it: You need to embrace your flaws because everyone has them. Learn to love and appreciate yourself because if you do not put a high value on you, then who will?

Carnival skaters take to the ice

By Shannon Robin After a season practising elements, dances and freeskate for competitions and test days, skaters can relax and show their stuff at their local carnivals.

With the theme Under the Big Top, the Pincher Creek Skating Club offers a true carnival atmosphere. Doors open at 1 p.m.

Saturday, and the show begins at 2.

Crowsnest Pass skaters promise to take you around the world with their performances. The show takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Coleman complex.

Claresholm, Stavely, Fort Macleod and Nanton all held their carnivals last weekend.

I’d love to say I attended them all because I know I would have enjoyed that immensely! I managed to catch the end of the Claresholm show, but wasn’t able to make the others.

“The Winter Wonderland carnival was another success,” says Donna Moses, president of the Claresholm Figure Skating Club.

“The penguins, bobsledders, Suzy Snowflakes, snowbirds, sled dogs, Christmas morning, New Year’s Eve, snowman and lady, hockey players and St. Patrick’s Day numbers reminded us of the wonders of winter and how to celebrate it.”

It’s always awesome to see kids doing their thing with big smiles on their faces – that’s what makes a year of cold days at the arena worthwhile.

Fans can look forward to some excellent peewee hockey this weekend as the Pincher Creek Chinooks take on the Crowsnest Pass Thunder in the Spud League peewee A finals.

Game 1 is Saturday at 9:45 a.m. at the Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman.

Game 2 is Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Community Centre Arena in Pincher Creek.

If a third game is necessary in the best-of-three series, it will be Tuesday evening at 7:15 in Coleman.

The 13- and 14-year-old players will be closely matched after regular season play put the Thunder at the top of standings and the Chinooks in second place, with a difference of only four points.

A new taste in town Colleen Ast is the owner and living foods chef for Cloud 9, a specialty store that has just opened its doors in Pincher Creek.

“From my own desire to eat foods that were healthy, whole food options, Cloud 9 was born,” says Colleen.

“I incorporate whole foods and superfoods/ superherbs into tantalizing creations that will leave you satisfied and nourished!”

Colleen focuses on gluten-free, peanut-free and dairy-free products made from the highest quality organic and raw ingredients. This includes decadent sweets that are still good for you.

Private and group cooking classes are offered from the commercial kitchen in Colleen’s home and can be customized to what a group or individual wants to learn.

Cloud 9 also has storefront location, shared with Quickdraw Computers at 815D Main St. This is behind Home Hardware, on the west side of the Sobeys parking lot.

“If you know what you want to buy, just pop in!” Colleen says. If you would like her advice or assistance, she is at the store Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m.

Cloud 9 offers gluten-free grains, superfoods, chocolates, kale chips, dairy-free cheesecakes and more, and also accepts special orders.

Colleen is hosting an Elixir Mixer night at the store on Saturday at 7 p.m., and says, “You may feel invincible when you leave!”

Call it a heart-stopper, a nail-biter or a heartbreaker. It all adds up to the final game between the Livingstone Sabres and the Ryley Rebels at the 1A girls’ basketball provincials in Pincher Creek.

Both teams fought for the gold medal until the bitter end. The Lundbreck girls had the support of a cheering crowd throughout the tournament, and

most were holding their breath as the final seconds ran down on the clock.

With a final score of 61-59 for the Rebels, it was a close game each team wanted badly to win.

After West leads the K-A-J of clubs, you ruff, cash the A-K of spades and trump a spade in dummy. You then lead the nine of hearts to the ace, rejecting the finesse and felling West’s singleton king. You lose a diamond trick later on, but you make four hearts.

But if you could not see the opposing cards, you might very well go down one after losing a heart finesse to the singleton king. However, even without the advantage of a peek, rejecting the finesse is the right play!

There is a very good reason for arriving at this conclusion. First you take West’s bidding into account; then you combine it with the additional knowledge gained from the play to the first six tricks.

At trick seven, when you lead the nine of

hearts from dummy, you know that West -who must have had at least four diamonds and four clubs for his bids, and who has already shown up with three spades -- cannot possibly have more than two hearts. (Actually, he’s much more likely to have either one heart or none.)

It follows that you cannot gain by taking a trump finesse. Even if the finesse won, you’d still have to lose a trump trick later to East’s K-x-x or K-x-x-x. Your only hope, therefore, is that West was dealt the singleton king of trumps!

Casino Ephemera Q: For years I have been collecting cardboard casino coin containers and have accumulated at least 50 of them from casinos in Canada, Illinois, Arizona and Las Vegas.

*** Q: My wife has been an avid book collector all of her life. Now that we are retired, we are thinking of selling some of her collections but have no idea if they are worth anything. Two of the series we are especially interested in are early and first editions of the Nancy Drew series and early copies of the Motor Boys books published during the early 20th century. -- William, Port Orange, Fla. A: There were 22 volumes in the Motor Boys series, all published between 1906 and 1924.

Most titles sell for about $5. Typical are “The Motor Boys in Mexico” (1906), “The Motor Boys Across the Plains” (1907), and “The Motor Boys on the Wing” (1912), all available at www.abe.com for less than $10.

The first Nancy Drew book was “The Secret of the Old Clock,” published in 1930 that featured 16-year-old Nancy searching for a missing will to prevent the Topham family from inheriting an estate they do not deserve. • Each serving equals: 200 calories, 8g fat, 17g protein, 15g carb., 484mg sodium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Meat, 1 Starch.

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9-by5-inch loaf pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine meat, breadcrumbs, onion, green pepper and 1/3 cup tomato soup. Mix well to combine. Pat mixture into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 45 minutes.

2. Stir mustard, parsley flakes and black pepper into remaining tomato soup. Spread soup mixture evenly over partially baked meatloaf. Evenly arrange cheese slices over top. Bake for an additional 15 minutes or until meatloaf is cooked through and cheese is melted.

3. Place loaf pan on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Cut into 6 servings.

Freezes well.

Looking behind the curtain might seem like it could drain the magic from the Muppets, but it’s actually a peek into another dimension of their world. Colorful felt, buggy eyes and clever shots abound.

It’s a magic trick that’s impressive even when you know how it’s done. Clash has been making puppets since he was a boy in the suburbs of Baltimore. Learning how Clash worked his way to where he wanted to be makes scrappy little Elmo even more endearing.

PHOTO: Jeremy Irvine in “War Horse” PICKS OF THE WEEK “War Horse” (PG-13) -- This latest offering from Steven Spielberg has all of the visual splendor and classic-style sentimentality expected from the veteran film maker. It starts with an English farm boy named Albert (Jeremy Irvine) being tasked with raising and training a colt racing stallion called Joey. When the two are separated by World War I, the horse braves an odyssey through ravaged Europe, making an impact in the lives of humans wherever he goes.

The bulk of the story stays with the horse.

While the majestic creature makes its way through the horrors of war, everything has that classic-movie sheen to it. While we’re supposed to feel for the horse, it seems like the mountains of human suffering are being glossed over.

“We Bought a Zoo” (PG) -- Sometimes, you just have to take a big, crazy leap and give it your all. That seems to be the syrupy message at the heart of this based-on-atrue story. Benjamin (Matt Damon) is a let-go newspaper reporter who recently

lost his wife. While looking for a new home where he can take his young daughter and teen son, he finds a run-down country estate that also happens to be a run-down zoo in need of new, dedicated owners.

Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Colin Ford (who plays Damon’s son) all portray characters more grounded than their script. This story of a wild risk that paid off for one troubled family can be a joyful experience, just make sure any children watching don’t get their hopes up.

“Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey” (PG) -- This isn’t a typical Elmo DVD-adventure, but it is about a young person with dreams that come true. This documentary follows Kevin Clash, Elmo’s puppeteer and voice. The film tells the story of Clash’s childhood aspirations to work with Jim Henson, and shows behind-the-scenes footage of Clash and the rest of the Mup-

“London River” -- In the aftermath of the London Underground bombings in 2005, two people cross paths while sorting through the terror and the tragedy. Elisabeth is a white Christian woman searching for her daughter. After putting up posters, she comes in contact with Ousmane, a black Muslim man from France who found a photograph of his son with her daughter. The two try to use each other to get to the bottom of what happened. The story and the performances make the film worthwhile, even if the message can seem a bit blunt.

Buying a Home With an FHA Rehab Loan If you’ve hoped to buy a home on a low budget, chances are that everything you’ve looked at needs work. If you’re lucky, it might be as simple as paint in every room. On the other hand, perhaps the house you want was a foreclosure that was trashed by vandals when it sat empty, and the cost of the repair work will take more cash than you’ll have available after closing.

There are a number of reasons to take on a home that needs work: location (you want to stay in the kids’ school district or be closer to work), you can’t afford a perfect house, or you see the potential in the house and know if would serve your

family well for many years to come.

That’s where a Federal Housing Administration 203(k) rehab loan can come in.

This type of loan covers the mortgage as well as repairs that need to be made to single-family homes, with the total cost wrapped up in one neat loan package.

There are two levels to the loan program: 1) if the work that needs to be done is fairly simple (doesn’t involve structural repairs) and will cost under $35,000, or 2) extensive renovation at a cost of at least $5,000 with no maximum limit.

During the rehab process, FHA inspectors will visit the site multiple times to ensure that the work is up to standards and is following the plan. You’ll have six months to get the work completed by a contractor.

Funds, held in escrow, will be released in stages as the work is done.

If you’re interested in a multi-unit building and plan to live in one of the units, the 203(k) can be used for up to four family units. You can build a new house on an old foundation, or move a house to a new location. The work must include improving “thermal efficiency,” such as weather stripping and insulation.

The process for securing a 203(k) loan is complicated, with numerous steps to follow, but the stress can be worth it if it gets you the house you want, with repairs made, at a price you can afford.

Stray Gloves Morph Into Puppet Players Any mismatched, mateless stretch gloves or mittens stuffed in your kids’ backpacks or in baskets by the backdoor hooks? Don’t toss out that blue right-hand mitten or the purple-andwhite striped left glove. Bring these odd combinations together for creative storytelling by the handful when you effortlessly turn them into puppets using your kids’ favorite plush toy characters.

You can make stray-glove puppets with broken or outgrown earmuffs, too.

It’s as easy as 1-2-3: 1. Have one child slip on a glove or mitten while you cut a 2-inch piece of selfsticking fabric fastener, such as Velcro.

Press it on the top of the glove near your child’s knuckles.

2. Put a corresponding piece of fastener on the underside of a small, lightweight plush toy. Let your child choose a favorite character. Creepy-crawler spiders and worms, or sea creatures such as a crab or fish are especially fun.

Press it firmly to adhere well. (For extra durability, sew the Velcro to the toy and

glove by hand with a few stitches.)

To use the puppet, attach the toy to the glove or mitten where the Velcro pieces meet. Put it on your hand, and put the characters into action. For example: Wiggle fingers to mimic spider legs, fins on a fish or the wings of a bird. If you have a duck perched on a blue mitten, move your hand slowly to create the illusion of it swimming over ripples on a pond.

3. You also can take the “muff ” off of broken or outgrown earmuffs, and glue or put Velcro on the bottom of the muff and on top of a glove. Sew bells on the muff for eyes or simply glue on googly eyes from a craft store. Sew or glue on feet cut out from felt at the end of each glove finger-tip.

When they’re all made, with the flick of a wrist, your kids will have fun acting out a scene from their imaginations or

favorite stories.

Gain Control Over Dandruff DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How does one eliminate dandruff? I have had it for months and have tried many, many shampoos without making any progress. I can’t wear a dark suit coat. I look like I’ve just come in from a snow blizzard. Please give me some sort of program that I can follow.

-- H.H. ANSWER: Dandruff ’s official name is seborrheic (SEB-uh-REE-ik) dermatitis. “Dermatitis” indicates skin inflammation. Seborrhea is an overproduction of oil, sebum. Many with dandruff deny they have an oily scalp. They say their scalp is dry. That can be the case, but seborrheic dermatitis flourishes on skin with an abundance of oil glands. The scalp is one of those places, but not the only place. The flakes that land on your

shoulders are sloughed-off skin cells. Dandruff usually is quite itchy. Scratching dislodges the dead skin cells.

A yeast with the name Malassezia contributes to the problem. It’s probably not the actual cause, but it aids and abets the dandruff process.

I’m sure you have tried many shampoos. Let me suggest ones that contain salicylic acid, zinc or selenium. Scalpicin, Head and Shoulders and Selsun Blue are three brand names. There are others. The way you use the shampoo is as important as your choice of shampoo. Wash your hair daily with one of these products. Massage it into your scalp, and let the shampoo remain on your scalp for five minutes. Do this for a minimum of three weeks. If you have an improvement, you can cut back on your shampooing to every other day.

If there has been no improvement, then get a shampoo that attacks the Malassezia yeast.

Nizoral A-D (1 percent ketoconazole) is a brand name you can find easily. Do the daily shampoo drill with one of these for three weeks.

If after all this you still have dandruff, you need a doctor’s intervention. The doctor can prescribe more powerful agents, ones that have cortisone that can calm the inflamed skin. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband has just been told he has spasmodic dystonia. He has had two Botox injections. They made it worse at first but then better. Friends and family have never heard of it. Would you give us an explanation of it in layman’s terms? -- T.W.

ANSWER: Spasmodic dysphonia messes up the voice. People often believe they have laryngitis from a virus. They don’t; they have a cramping of the muscles that control their vocal cords. Their voices crack while saying a word, or become weak and breathy, or sound as though they are being choked. Sometimes it seems like the affected person has developed a stutter. The condition usually arises between the ages of 30 and 50. Its cause is unknown.

An ear, nose and throat doctor can make a diagnosis by viewing the affected person’s vocal cords and seeing how they are misbehaving. Botox can put an end to the vocal muscles’ spasms. Treatment lasts for about three months, and then another injection is given.

Scrambled eggs are the perfect quick and easy main dish for a brunch. The fresh herbs add fresh flavor perfect for spring.

2 boxes (10 ounces each) sliced mushrooms 2 shallots, thinly sliced 2 sprigs fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons sherry vinegar Salt Pepper 1 pound sugar snap peas 1 large (8 ounces) bunch frisee, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/4 cup packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped 2 tablespoons (pignoli) pine nuts, toasted 1. Place mushrooms in large bowl. In 2-quart saucepan, combine shallots, thyme, bay leaf and 1/3 cup oil. Heat on medium 2 to 3 minutes or until shallots are just tender. Pour over mushrooms and immediately stir until well-mixed.

Stir in 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Cover and let stand at room temperature 1 hour, or refrigerate up to 4 hours.

2. Heat covered 4-quart saucepan of water to boiling on high. Meanwhile, remove and discard strings from snap peas. Add snap peas and 1/2 teaspoon salt to boiling water. Cook, uncovered, 2 minutes or until crisp-tender. Drain and immediately rinse with cold water until cool; drain again.

3. In large bowl, toss frisee, parsley and snap peas with remaining 2 tablespoons vinegar and 1 tablespoon oil. Divide among salad plates.

Remove and discard thyme and bay leaf from mushrooms; divide mushrooms and sherry dressing among frisÄe plates. Sprinkle with toasted pine nuts to serve. Serves 8. Ñ Each serving: About 160 calories, 12g total fat (2g saturated), 0mg cholesterol, 120mg sodium, 10g carbohydrate, 4g dietary fiber, 5g protein.

2. Whisk in Dijon mustard, then chopped parsley and chives. Continue whisking 1 to 2 minutes or until eggs are almost set and very creamy. Immediately remove skillet from heat and spoon eggs into warmed large serving bowl. Garnish with additional herbs. Serves 8.

• Need to hull strawberries? Try using a straw.

Position the straw at the bottom of the strawberry, then push up toward the stem. It works quickly and well.

• If you mount a magnet strip in your bathroom or on your vanity, you can use it to hold bobby pins or metal barrettes. Or mount a ribbon to hold all kinds of hair clips.

• Baby leg protectors are cute. And cheap, if you have some old athletic socks. Cut off the ends, slip over baby’s legs, and watch cutie scoot across the floor.

• If your entertainment electronics have a clock that is too bright, cover it with plain tape. You’ll still be able to read the time, but the tape will lessen the glare.

• “My in-laws have a vaulted ceiling, and there is a corner that even the longest-handled duster won’t reach. My brilliant son had an idea to get down the cobwebs that had accumulated there. He used a rubber band to secure a dishtowel around a tennis ball. Then he just tossed it at the area repeatedly. By Samantha Mazzotta Cleaning Windows Inside and Out Q: I’m pretty regular about cleaning my home’s windows on the inside, but as a new homeowner I’ve never cleaned the outside of the windows, and they’re getting pretty grungy. The first floor shouldn’t be a problem, but what about the upstairs windows? Also, is there a faster way to clean than with paper towels and spray cleaner? -- Brad in Knoxville, Tenn.

A: “Fast” depends on just how grungy the outside of the windows are, but I can get you to “effective and efficient” which will make the task of cleaning windows easier.

On a side note, spring and fall are great times to clean the outside windows, if you don’t do them more frequently.

These are typically the seasons when screens are replaced with storm windows and vice versa, and while dual screen-storm windows are more common, it’s still a good guideline to follow.

First, inspect all your home’s windows to make sure they’re undamaged, including storm windows and screens. Next, remove screens or storm windows and place them on a clean, sunny spot of the driveway or walkway to be cleaned.

Take a look at the home’s windows from the inside.

Newer double-hung windows can be unhooked and either lifted out of the frame or swung inward to access the outside of the glass. Older windows are sometimes held in the frame by a thin strip of wood, which should be carefully removed. Then the bottom sash can be lifted out of the frame. Being able to swing out or remove the bottom sash makes cleaning the outside of upstairs windows easier and much safer than climbing a ladder to reach them.

To clean windows, brush away loose dust and debris first.

Then fill a bucket with warm water and mild detergent.

Place a waterproof liner (like a tarp or sheet of plastic) underneath the window to protect the floor and walls.

Wear rubber gloves to keep your hands clean and less pruney. Dunk a clean sponge in the soapy water and wash the windowpanes, repeating as necessary to remove builtup dirt. Once the window is clean, grab a lint-free cloth, a chamois or for a really old-school way to dry a window, some newspaper. Dry the glass completely; for your final pass, wipe back and forth, then straight up and down, to minimize streaks.

I usually start cleaning the outside of windows first. Yes, it grunges up your water and sponge faster, but it also gets the hard work out of the way first. I can clean the sponge and refill the bucket for the inside of the windows.

Finally, clean the screens and storm windows that were set aside, brushing away cobwebs and loose dirt before using soap and water. Close up all of the windows and reset either the screens or storm windows, ready for the next season.

HOME TIP: Avoid drying windows in direct sunlight, as the glass is more likely to streak.

By Tony Rizzo PHOTO: Jean Dujardin HOLLYWOOD -- Be careful what you wish for! Jean Dujardin came off the Oscar campaign trail with the gold and returned to his native France, where he is already a huge star and was greeted by mobs of French fans. But beware the dangers of the public eye.

The first attack came when his new film, “Les Infideles” (“The Unfaithful Ones”), a comedy in which he plays five cheating Frenchmen, opened in France. Completed prior to his Oscar nomination, it had a scene in New York, where he’s seducing a lover in a hotel room as the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers happens outside the window behind him.

Dujardin, also the producer, was advised to cut the scene, and did. If word of the 9/11 attack being used as a backdrop for a philandering comedy scene leaked out, it could have hurt his chances with Academy voters.

The French press criticized him for that and called the film “shockingly sexist.”

And we non-French speaking Americans didn’t know that Dujardin apparently dropped what amounts to an “F-bomb” in French at the end of his Oscar acceptance speech. His defense? “It was a bit spontane-

ous; it just came out like that!”

Hopefully, his next film, a remake of the French classic “One Wild Moment,” with French actor Vincent Cassell (remade in l984 with Michael Caine as “Blame It on Rio”), will be the kind of follow-up to “The Artist” that American audiences expect. *** Meryl Streep’s “Great Hope Springs” film, with Tommy Lee Jones, Jean Smart and Steve Carell, was to have opened Dec. 14, but because of her Oscar win, it now will open Aug. 10. Next up for Streep is the film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play “August: Osage County,” with Julia Roberts playing her daughter.

Christopher Plummer is shooting the HBO film “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight,” with Frank Langella. It’s not about Ali’s fighting in the ring, but in the public arena when he refused to fight in Vietnam.

Martin Scorsese’s follow-up to the fivetime Oscar-winning “Hugo” is “Silence,” with Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis as a Jesuit spreading Christianity in Japan. The sweeping epic also stars “No Country for Old Men” Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro.

Scorsese will then make the long-anticipated Frank Sinatra bio-pic. Al Pacino had been mentioned to play Sinatra, but insiders say

In my mind’s eye, I picture myself in dainty, flour-covered apron taking plump, golden loaves out of the oven. The smell of freshly baked bread perfumes the house, drawing my loving family to the table. Then, I’m snapped back to reality by the realization that I barely have time to sleep at night. Besides, homemade bread takes hours to make -- or does it?

The beautiful thing about a retro recipe is that you can always find a way to make it modern. I love playing with dough, whether it’s bread, pizzas or pies. Quick bread recipes allow me to re-create a delicious memory in a modern way.

Quick breads provide the taste and smell of yeast breads in a fraction of the time. Most recipes for quick breads contain a chemical leavening reaction of a base, like baking soda, and an acid such as cream of tartar, lemon juice or buttermilk to produce carbon dioxide. A good-quality baking powder contains an acid and a base and only needs a liquid to activate it. The carbon dioxide that is formed makes the bread rise. It also produces a texture softer and lighter than most yeast breads.

My recipe for Liberian Pineapple Nut Bread is about as retro as you can possibly get! It’s an African recipe that I’ve modernized by adding a healthy dose of wheat bran. Wheat bran contains B

vitamins, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin, minerals and fiber to keep things, um, moving. The fiber in the wheat germ helps you to feel full faster, and also absorbs fat and cholesterol before it enters the blood stream. This quick bread is perfect as part of a healthy breakfast or a light snack. Best of all, it’s a delicious excuse for those days when you want to play with your food!

LIBERIAN PINEAPPLE NUT BREAD Turn this quick bread into a “grab and go” breakfast or snack along with a few tablespoons of Eden Foods Organic Apple Butter, Arrowhead Mills Organic Creamy Valencia Peanut Butter or Cascadian Farms Fruit Spreads.

1 cup Bob’s Red Mill Wheat Bran 1/2 cup chopped, almonds or walnuts 2 cups King Arthur Flour Organic Artisan All Purpose Flour 1/2 cup Bob’s Mills Organic Whole Wheat Pastry Flour 1 tablespoon Bob’s Red Mill Non-Aluminum Double Acting Baking Powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 2 cups crushed pineapple with juice 1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon vanilla or fresh lemon juice 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

2. Toast the wheat bran and the nuts together in a heavy, dry pan over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to keep from burning. Set aside to cool.

3. Sift the flours, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a large bowl. Mix in the toasted wheat bran and nuts.

Add eggs, pineapple, water and vanilla or lemon juice. Mix together thoroughly. The dough should be moist and well-combined.

4. Scoop batter into a greased loaf pan.

Bake for 1 hour, or until a toothpick or tester inserted in the middle of loaf comes out clean. Cool and wrap tightly in food-safe plastic wrap and foil. Loaf can be frozen up to 3 months.

• On March 21, 1971, “The Andromeda Strain,” the first movie to use computer animation, opens. The sci-fi thriller, featuring scientists racing against time and an alien virus, was the first of many films to be made from a Michael Crichton book.

• On March 24, 1989, the worst oil spill in U.S. territory begins when the supertanker Exxon Valdez runs aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in Alaska.

The Spay/Neuter Debate Continues DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to “Tom C.,” who doesn’t want to neuter his purebred German Shepherd. Good for you for sticking to your and many people’s beliefs! I have met many breeders of purebred animals. They refuse to alter their “pet” -- or for many, their bankroll -for any reason. For those of you who truly love your pet and your breed and try to find “perfect” homes for them (at the right price), you should know that many of them end up in shelters just like the mongrels (as Tom put it). I prefer the term “mix breed.”

All Tom has to do if he truly cares is to look at any dog rescue site on the Internet and he will see many purebreds that are without a home.

There are thousands of purebreds being put to sleep because there are no homes for them. The other thing

about having animals altered is that they are not only calmer, they are healthier. And it has been proven that an altered pet lives longer if cared for properly.

By the way, I own two mix breeds and one purebred. All are rescues!

The purebred was half her weight when we got her and has the saddest story out of all our critter kids. I don’t even tell her story, it’s that terrible!
