My Little Corner This weekend I enjoyed attending the figure skating carnivals in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass.

Under the Big Top was the theme of the Pincher Creek carnival, while Crowsnest Pass skaters took their audience Around the World with their presentation.

Congratulations to coaches Krystle Anderson and Sherry Mackenzie of Pincher Creek and Irene Fraser of Crowsnest Pass for excellent choreographies that kept their audiences captivated.

Watching from the stands, it’s easy to enjoy a performance without thinking about the amount of work involved in creating what might look like a simple routine.

Appropriate music is a must, then comes the tricky job of planning the steps and patterns. This requires a visualization talent that not many of us have.

I know I certainly don’t!

The choreographer needs to take many things into consideration. For example, skaters come in all sizes, and have different lengths of stride. Visualizing how all of the components will come together is a huge part of the process before the routine is ever tried out on the ice.

Within each group there will always be a variety of ability levels. Highlighting each skater’s strongest elements and giving everyone a chance to shine can be challenging.

Making it happen, though, creates an awesome group routine.

The lobby of the Pincher Creek arena was bustling with circus-like excitement leading up to the show. There were clowns, balloons, and youngsters calling “Get your candy” as

they made rounds through the stands.

The three-ring circus hit the ice, and animals, clowns, dancers and soloists gave a great performance.

In Coleman, the music was upbeat and lively as skaters did the Mexican Hat Dance and other entertaining group acts, along with solos and duets representing 15 countries.

The costumes at both carnivals were amazing!

The soloists were confident and looked fabulous. I couldn’t help but shiver as the girls came out in their beautiful dresses with bare backs and arms. None of them even sported a goosebump!

It’s obvious that quality instruction is happening in our small communities when you see the level of achievement the skaters are attaining.

At the end of the worldwide tour in Coleman, the executive and directors were seated at ice level for a special thank-you routine performed by the senior skaters. It was very touching and a few tears needed to be wiped away throughout the arena.

This ties in with last week’s editorial where I tried to stress the importance of meaningful and heartfelt “thank yous” for those who do so much for us and don’t always get the recognition they deserve.

Congratulations to the skaters, the coaches, the parents and the community volunteers who make special events like this happen.

Hi Kathy, Wow! My pyjamas and my couch are going to be so happy to see me this Saturday.

They were beginning to think I’d abandoned them forever.

But seriously, I wanted to thank you again for all your hard work on making the last five weeks happen.

For people like me who may have never had the nerve to step out on a public stage, this was an amazing stepping-stone.

It’s one thing to work up the courage to sing in a corner of a bar while people go about their business loudly and yell out, “Play some AC/DC,” and it’s another to be provided with such a respectful and supportive avenue as Idol is.

I didn’t know what to expect, but this far exceeded ideas I had about it being a “silly contest.”

I know people will always have their opinions and input on what could be done differently, but sometimes we forget to appreciate how much was done well and the amount of work it takes. So please, pass out some pats on the back for me.

After an evening of spectacular entertainment, Jeff Chambers was declared winner of the Crownest Pass Idol competition. He received a $2,000 cheque for his efforts. Runner-up was Carly Perkin, who went home $1,000 richer. More photos in this week’s online edition.

Top-notch Idol showdown

By Shannon Robin After five weeks of intense performances, Jeff Chambers earned top honours Saturday in the Crowsnest Pass Idol competition, hosted by the Blairmore Legion.

Judges Daryl Ferguson, Desirie Michalski and Michelle Dobek-Koinberg had the tough job of scoring the performances each week based on vocal ability, rhythm and tempo, vocal expression, stage presence, creativity and originality.

Much like the Idol shows on TV, they also shared praise and constructive criticism with the contestants in front of over 200 people who jammed the Legion each week. They managed to do this honestly and with humour during the final show.

There were 15 participants this year, and by Saturday this had been reduced to eight finalists in contention for the $2,000 grand prize donated

by Teck.

The performances were strong, including

cover tunes and originals. Some acommpanied themselves on guitar or ukelele and others sang to background tracks. The audience was supportive of each performer, at times clapping or singing along and at other times fighting tears when the songs were powerful and emotional.

Kristin Sciarra, Amber Turner and Katherine Smith were disappointed to be called out as the bottom three. They each received a gift certificate from the Rum Runner in Coleman.

Kristin acknowleged nervousness during her performance, but seemed relaxed by the time she sang her final piece, which she dedicated to her son.

Amber showed versatility in her repertoire covering both country and rock tunes. She was confident on stage but was called out for some off-pitch notes.

Katherine also struggled with nerves and had a few slips in her words. She evoked whoops of support from the audience when she really

got into her last song.

Jon Bergman was next to leave the stage followed by Kyle Raines. Fernie Ford sponsored the $300 fourth-place and $200 fifth-place prizes.

Jon stuck with covers and his genre of country music. Audience members were quick to clap along to the familiar music and show their full support.

Kyle had an easy rapport with the audience, who jokingly warned him not to poke his eye out on the untrimmed ends of his guitar strings.

He shared a particularly entertaining original song that had people chuckling with his use of “huck-too.” Yup, you had to be there!

The final three contenders were Shannon Riviere, Jeff Chambers and Carly Perkin.

Shannon was a crowd favourite, and some were surprised to hear her name announced as the third place contestant.

Yes, it exists! This photo of Rory Ingram of Pincher Creek was taken at The Bridge of the Mastodons in 2009. Thirty years of searching for the natural wonder had finally paid off.

Comparison with a photo in the Crowsnest Pass history book shows the bridge hasn’t changed since Jack Vaughn found it in the 1930s.

The Bridge of the Mastodons

By Muriel J. Shepherd During the Depression, when jobs were scarce, many out-of-work residents in the area called Crowsnest Pass, nestled in a remote corner of southwest Alberta, hunted to feed their families.

In the back of some of their minds was a faint hope of stumbling onto the lode of the Lost Lemon Mine. The legend of its existence had intrigued locals since 1870.

One of the those locals was a prospector name Jack Vaughn. In his ongoing search for anything worth money, he came upon this rock formation in 1933 and christened it The Bridge of the Mastodons.

He and his travel partner, Lloyd Nelson, had their picture taken on it, which was included in a book on the history of Crownest Pass put together by the local historical society in 1979.

One captivated reader of this account was my son, Rory, who was born and raised in

A hunter all through his youth, he’d covered many miles and never come across this bridge.

For 25-plus years he searched for it. In 2009, on one of these forays into the mountains with a friend, Mike Proc, and aided by ATVs and binoculars, Rory was suddenly shocked to see the bridge appear in his view!

The next day, they returned accompanied

by Rory’s son, Benn, who brought a camera and global positioning system to document the find.

Rory stood atop the bridge, his long quest finally accomplished.

Simplifying their lives

About 115 women treated themselves to a motivational day of escape and attended the 2012 Nanton Women’s Conference last Saturday.

The theme was Simplify Your Life, and presentations included extreme couponing, household budgeting and organizing. Attendees came away with an abundance of ideas to make things easier for themselves.

“Keynote speaker Michele Cederberg was very motivational and so dynamic,” says organizer Jennifer Handley. “She left the crowd on a high.”

Michele is the author of If Your Life Sucks It’s Your Fault. Jennifer says, “That pretty much sums it up right there. It’s all about not dwelling on the past, living in the present and taking life a little less seriously.”

The day included musical entertainment, a fashion show and a silent auction.

A highlight of the day was the big makeover door prize. Raelynn Walker and Tara Gregg were treated to makeovers sponsored by Bourjois Cosmetics.

This kind of pampering leaves a woman feeling like a million bucks. You can see their before and after photos on page 10.

The overall consensus, based on written evaluations and personal conversations, “is that it was a nice escape,” says Jennifer. “The day flowed well, presented relevant information, and was very balanced with entertainment and the fashion show to break up the presentations.”

The conference is the main event for the Nanton Gamma Xi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, with all proceeds donated to local groups. This year the funds will be split between the Nanton Boys and Girls Club and the Nanton Emergency Fund.

A date has already been booked for next year.

This is another example of a small group making a big difference in their community. Way to go, ladies!

New home for historic detachment

By Shannon Robin It’s impossible not to feel a strong sense of patriotism and pride when watching the RCMP march in full ceremonial uniform.

Last Friday was no exception as the rhythm of 40 pairs of polished boots added to the visual of red serge against the fresh snow.

A large crowd gathered outside the new RCMP detachment in Fort Macleod for the commissioning ceremony of the building.

The program included congratulatory speeches from a panel of dignitaries representing local, provincial and federal levels of government and First Nations.

Crow Lodge Drummers from Piikani performed following a blessing by Elder Maurice Little Wolf.

Grade 8 student Hayley Grier-Stewart spoke with pride of her involvement in Air Cadets and her long family history of public service. She presented detachment commander Sgt. Brent Hawker with a framed eagle feather.

After an official ribbon cutting, the flags were raised as youngsters Rebecca Runions and Cody Hagen led “O Canada.” Rev. Pilar Gateman shared a prayer before Rebecca and Cody closed with “God Save the Queen” and the troops were dismissed.

In familiar scarlet serge, the RCMP are a strong symbol of tradition and pride recognized across the nation and around the world.

On a local level, the RCMP represent a very strong sense of commitment to the community.

Fort Macleod was home to the first NorthWest Mounted Police post established in 1874 and is the oldest continuously operating detachment in Canada.

Sgt. Brent Hawker says the new building contains the latest equipment and allows the force to have all operations under one roof. The old cell block was a separate building and officers had to work back and forth between two locations.

The new building was ready for occupancy in late October and boasts over 6,000 square feet designed to meet modern policing needs.

Sgt. Hawker acknowledges that they take some teasing about the location, which happens to be next to a doughnut shop, but points out, “Tim Hortons came later.”

Youth initiatives are a priority for the Fort Macleod RCMP through programs like the Duke of Edinburgh Awards which encourage young people to get involved in community service, develop personal skills, be physically fit and gain personal understanding.

“We’ll be rolling out the program at F.P. Walshe on April 5,” Sgt. Hawker says.

Dressed in period costumes, members of the Fort Macleod Historical Society had a visible presence at the opening ceremonies.

That evening they held a regimental ball to celebrate along with and honour the RCMP, and to raise funds for the musical ride.

The musical ride runs daily at the Fort Museum during the summer months along with other programs dedicated to preserving the history of the RCMP and the town.

By Tina Webber I was recently shown how to navigate Google Earth on the computer. It was fascinating to be able to go anywhere in the world at the touch of a button. So, I travelled without ever leaving my room.

Of course, the first place I visited was where I grew up – Campbell, Calif. I can’t say all my childhood memories were good, but going back through Google Earth and seeing where I grew up brought back some of the good ones.

After the economic explosion due to the Silicon Valley computer boom, all the houses on the street, although always big, expanded to mansion proportions. The houses were now gated and surrounded by urban sprawl. Unfortunately, the orchards nearby had been cut down to accommodate urban growth.

My childhood home was still there, shaded by trees and foliage. The trees were the variety I remembered but, like me, more mature. They were still on the beautiful winding road I had roamed as a child, in a time when children were safe to roam. Of course, I was always followed by my German shepherd, ever my protector, who had a keen sense of who was harmless and who was not.

My brothers and I would often eat the plums, oranges, cherries, apples or even cactus fruit that

grew around the house. This saved us from going home for lunch and to the chores Mother was sure to find for us.

I once came home covered in ripe plums after climbing a neighbour’s plum tree. My brothers had climbed up the trees on either side of the one I was in. They started throwing the ripe fruit and I, being youngest and in the middle tree, got the worst of it.

I went home crying, covered from head to toe in plums. The red, at first glance, looked an awful lot like blood; my mother looked anxiously for the wound and was too frantic to hear my explanation of how I came to be covered in ripe plums.

I look back fondly at those parts of my youth because I had something children are missing in these days of organized activities and computer games. I had freedom. The kind of freedom which allowed me to discover my world and use my imagination – where rocks could be cars travelling on a road cleared in the dirt, or a tree could be a spaceship.

Yes, looking back means you can never really go home. But, I can remember the good times.

And now they may even overshadow the bad.

Idol, continued from page 3 she sang with huge power in comparison to her delicate stature. Shannon’s efforts earned her a $500 cheque from Devon Canada Corp.

The final moments were tense as Jeff and Carly waited to hear who would take home the Idol bragging rights along with a $2,000 cheque.

Carly had been praised for her unique style and perfect pitch, while Jeff had put it all on the line with a combination of cover and original tunes that had moved the entire audience to stand for an ovation for his final song.

As it turned out, the scores indicated a tie between the contestants and the judges had to make the tough final decision.

Carly was called forward to accept second prize of $1,000 from the Blairmore Lions Club, and her expression of congratulations to Jeff was genuine.

Jeff was in obvious disbelief for a few moments before a broad smile spread across his face.

He says the prize money will be put to good use toward the MacBook Pro he’s been eyeing for its recording capabilities, and possibly a new guitar.

Jeff recalls his grandmother’s big piano that captivated his attention as a youngster. He figured out quickly how it worked and learned the basics of music through piano lessons at a young age.

He switched to guitar and into rock star mode when piano wasn’t cool anymore. “I played anything I could get my hands on and was always getting into trouble for tapping beats on my desk,” he says.

Jeff wrote his first song, “Toy Gun,” when he was 12 or 13. He says his compositions “are all about building a good statement without saying a whole lot, and trying to make it as clever as possible.”

Jeff ’s brothers chipped in to buy him 10 hours of recording time that hasn’t been used yet. He says that when he has his “songs in a little better order and a little tighter,” he’ll record a 10-song CD. “Idol is about young people getting out and learning how to deal with self-confidence and performance,” he says. “You need to beat the nerves and keep the music as true as it would be in your living room.”

Carly also had some formal music training when she was younger through the Saskatoon Children’s Choir.

She exclaims, “Music is a compulsion. I’ve always had to sing – I can’t not sing!”

“I was a closet singer and used to hide in my bedroom and sing. I’ve never needed to sing for other people, I just sing for me because it’s something I can’t live without,” Carly says.

She picked up a little classical guitar about four years ago and taught herself to play.

Learning to accompany herself led to sharing her music with family, friends and residents of the Blairmore long-term care facility where she works.

Co-workers encouraged her to enter the contest. She says, “I held off in uncertainty until the very last minute of the very last day.”

Carly’s boyfriend, Andrew Campbell, was a driving force behind her entry and is a huge fan.

“He’s been so amazing and encouraging,” she says.

“I was very impressed with the other performers,” Carly says. “There was so much originality and creativity.”

Her family travelled from Saskatoon almost every weekend of the competition and their pride was obvious throughout the finale.

“My parents’ chests were so big this morning, I don’t know how they got into their car to drive home,” she commented Sunday evening.

“It’s hard to believe I’m enjoyable to listen to,” she says. “I guess I needed to hear it from a lot of people. Now I have to confidence to find an open mic or other public setting to perform.”

“Crowsnest Idol is an amazing stepping-stone for people like me who were curious but didn’t know what would happen when they stepped on a stage.”

Organizer Kathy Lang suggested the contest as a fundraiser for the Blairmore Legion a few years ago, and says, “It’s absolutely a go for next year!”

As well as raising money, she hopes the event brings an awareness of what the Legion is about to a younger generation.

“I think the talent was awesome – all of them were,” she says. “They do have talent, but many were nervous which affected their performances.”

Kathy has the support of a great group of volunteers who bend over backwards to help.

The ticket and food sales, 50/50 proceeds and bar sales all add up to keeping the Blairmore Legion viable in the future.

Kathy says, “We didn’t know if the idea would fly, but we’re thrilled that it did!”

“Tutankhamen: The Search for an Egyptian King”

by Joyce Tyldesley (Basic Cooks, $29.99) Review by Larry Cox The finding of the tomb of Tutankhamen

by Howard Carter and George Herbert, the fifth Earl of Carnarvon, in 1922 marked one of the most exciting archeological discoveries ever. It was an exceptional find, since it was the first near-complete royal burial site uncovered in the Valley of the Kings. King Tutankhamen’s golden death mask found in the tomb has, for many, become the defining image of ancient Egypt.

Carter’s firsthand account of the discovery is riveting to read even 90 years after the fact: “With trembling hands I made a tiny breach in the upper left-hand corner. Widening the hole a little, I inserted the candle and

peered in ... At first I could see nothing ... but presently as my eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room within emerged slowly from the mist, strange animals, statues and gold -- everywhere the glint of gold. For the moment -- an eternity it must have seemed to others standing by -- I was struck dumb with amazement, and when Lord Carnarvon, unable to stand the suspense any longer, inquired anxiously, ‘Can you see anything,’ it was all I could do to get out the words, ‘Yes, wonderful things.’”

British archaeologist and Egyptologist Joyce Tyldesley examines in fascinating detail what archaeologists and scholars have learned about this young king and his significance in Egypt’s history. She begins by explaining how Tutankhamen’s tomb was lost, then located again after years of wellreasoned archaeological detective work.

Drawing on journal entries, reports and newspaper accounts from the 1920s, Tyldesley painstakingly documents the discoveries made as the tomb was cleared of its goods.

The Tutankhamen family and its history are reconstructed to provide a more complete picture of the young king and the era in which he lived. The result is the fullest account to date of the discovery, life and times of Tutankhamen. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

A MATTER OF SELF-PRESERVATION The most common form of defense against a suit contract is to force declarer to ruff at every opportunity. One advantage of this procedure is that it keeps the defenders from breaking new suits, but the primary purpose is to completely deplete declarer’s trumps, after which the defenders will be in position to cash whatever cards remain in their long suits.

When declarer has a plentiful supply of trumps, he can usually withstand this attack on his trump suit. But when he has only seven trumps divided 5-2 or 4-3, his situation often becomes precarious.

Consider this deal where South reaches four spades as shown. West leads a heart, and hearts are continued. Declarer ruffs, and if he now draws trumps, exhausting his trumps in the process, he goes down one. He finishes with only nine tricks -- five spades and four clubs. When he leads a diamond at trick 11, the defenders score the ace of diamonds and

two more heart tricks.

This result should not come as any great surprise to South. The 4-2 division of the opposing trumps is more likely than any other, occurring nearly half the time.

To defuse this potential threat to his contract, declarer should adopt a more cautious approach. After trumping the heart at trick two, he should lead the jack of diamonds. If the jack holds the trick, he can then draw trumps and romp home with 10 tricks.

If the jack of diamonds is taken by the ace and a heart is returned, South must be careful not to ruff, which would reduce him to three trumps and leave him prey to a 4-2 trump split. Instead, he discards a club or a diamond, leaving his trump holding intact. A heart continuation can then be ruffed in dummy, after which he has the rest of the tricks and his contract. 1. In an 8-by-8-inch glass microwavable baking dish, combine 1/4 cup orange juice, sugar substitute to equal 3/4 cup sugar and flour. Stir in rhubarb. Microwave on HIGH (100 percent power) for 5 to 6 minutes or until mixture is thickened, stirring after 3 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine baking mix, remaining sugar substitute to equal 2 tablespoons sugar and remaining 1/2 cup orange juice.

Drop batter by tablespoonfuls into hot mixture to form 6 dumplings. Evenly sprinkle walnuts over top. Cover and microwave on HIGH for 4 to 6 minutes or until dumplings are no longer doughy. Let set for 2 to 3 minutes.

Evenly divide into 6 servings.

PHOTO: Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady” PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Iron Lady” (PG-13) -- Meryl Streep pulls a full-force Streep-a-thon in this scattershot biopic about Margaret Thatcher, England’s controversial conservative prime minister. Framed by the quasi-coherent mutterings of the elderly Thatcher in her late-life mental decline, the film shows a highlight reel of Thatcher’s life and career.

This flick managed to rake in another Oscar for the veteran actress, but that about sums up the appeal. Those unfamiliar with Thatcher’s bumpy political career won’t get much enlightment from the muddled narrative. If the Academy Award brought this film to your attention, then you pretty much know everything about it you need to know: Streep is a good actress, even when she’s in a boring and obscure movie.

“Miss Representation” -- Teenagers spend an incredible amount of time in front of the television or computer screen, in addition to being bombarded with advertising over every inch of the real world. This documentary explores how women are portrayed through the media, and how

that affects the development of young people. It’s not a singular study, but a general look at the role of women in the media, all punctuated with statistics. The film could be seen as an introduction into a broad and relevant discussion.

DOGS OF THE WEEK “The Darkest Hour” (PG-13) -- A band of merry young folk goes to Moscow for a good time only to have their party crashed by a bunch of invisible aliens. The movie also is under attack by invisible character development and an invisible budget.

Folks get turned into ash upon contact with translucent alien blobs, and any dread or excitement quickly evaporates as the movie becomes a silly, over-serious “Ghostbusters” cousin when the characters start fighting back.

Each character might as well have a red shirt with a number on it, as the order in which the unlikable protagonists are killed

“Animals United” -- This kids’ flick stands out from the pile of generic talking-CGanimal-adventures shoveled out by Hollywood, but only because this one is from Europe. So lacking in imagination and storytelling that it may as well be “Madagascar 6: Animals with Voices You Don’t Recognize.”

The plot has something to do with a lack of water, but this isn’t “Rango.” The animals make their foray into the land of people, but this isn’t any of the myriad movies in which that happens either. It’s just a weirdly familiar and wholly forgettable film. If you’ve run out of movies to show the kids, and “Animals United” is the only one left at bat, just let them play outside -- they might find an interesting stick or something.

Fatter Paychecks? Many Are Clueless The payroll tax reduction has been extended under the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012. Two percent of your deduction for Social Security (4.2 percent, down from 6.2 percent) has been picked up by the government again, and that amount will stay in your paycheck.

If you’re self-employed, your portion of self-employment tax drops from 12.4 percent to 10.4 percent, to account for that 2 percent.

Workers who earn $50,000 would have seen $1,000 in their paychecks over the year the reduction has been in place.

Divided by 24 (assuming twice-monthly pay periods) and that would have come to

around $40 per paycheck. If your annual pay is $30,000, your savings from the reduction is $50 per month.

Oddly enough, a poll by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling showed that 66 percent of workers didn’t know their paychecks were larger, even though the extra amount had been in paychecks for a year.

The poll shows what the rest of polled workers did with that money: --Saved most of it: 3 percent --Caught up on past-due bills: 8 percent --Increased retirement contributions: 4 percent --Bought something special: 1 percent --Paid off debt: 18 percent NFCC believes that the extension gives companies a chance to educate employees about using that money. For example, they believe that workers who aren’t distracted by financial concerns perform better and don’t receive collection calls at work.

It’s believed that the government would like us to spend the “windfall” as a means of boosting the economy. However, you are the one who needs to decide how best

to use that money.

First, be aware of the additional amount in your paycheck. If the reduction isn’t further extended next year, that amount could vanish from your income. Use a calculator online to learn just what extra amount is included in your check.

Second, determine what gets you the most return for that money. For example, if you put the money in savings, you’ll likely earn less than 1 percent interest. If you use the money to pay off a credit card (adding the additional money to every month’s payment), you’ll save the interest you would have paid on the balance.

‘Surprise Inside’ Easter Eggs Ready, set, think Easter! Put aside chores and to-do lists for an afternoon and make these colorfully decorated “surprise inside” Easter eggs with your family.

You’ll need the simplest of supplies: real eggshell halves or plastic eggs that twist open in half, bright gift-wrap tissue paper, household white glue and your children’s creativity.

Come Easter morning, friends and family will anticipate cracking open these dazzling eggs because there’s a special surprise inside each one!

To get started, save your eggshells.

When a recipe calls for eggs, carefully crack the eggs in half, empty the contents for the recipe and rinse out the matching eggshells with soap and water.

Set them aside to dry thoroughly, making sure you keep the pairs together. Or, simply use inexpensive empty plastic eggs in a variety of sizes from discount and dollar stores.

Place a small charm, toy, coins or a strip of paper with a saying, poem or kind

thought inside one of the halves of each eggshell pair. For example, “For an egg-stra special friend whose sense of humor cracks me up!”

Now it’s time to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Find the matching eggshell half and tape or glue the two pieces together. Don’t worry if there are gaps where small pieces of the shell may have broken.

Brush white household glue one section at a time on the eggshell and place small squares of cut gift-wrap tissue paper on the glue. Overlap the tissue squares as you cover the entire egg, including the open gaps, if there are any.

Paint a final coat of glue over the tissuecovered egg. Let dry. The glue will become invisible, revealing a colorful mosaic of tissue shapes. If an egg is designated for a particular person, glue on a small nametag.

Arrange your brightly decorated eggs in an Easter basket and enjoy them as a table centerpiece this month. Understanding Breast Calcifications DEAR DR. DONOHUE: The receptionist at my doctor’s office called to give me the report on a mammogram I had taken. She said that it showed calcifications and that the doctor wanted it repeated in six months. Why? Are calcifications indications of cancer? If they are, I’d like to get this taken care of immediately. I am becoming a nervous wreck thinking about this. -- H.M. ANSWER: When tests don’t provide a definite answer, everyone suffers -- the patient, the doctor of the patient and the doctor who interpreted the test.

Calcifications are the perfect example. They’re calcium specks. When the doctor interpreting the mammogram sees them, he or she bases their importance on their number, their shape,

their size and the pattern they make. With those criteria, the doctor usually can say whether they indicate cancer.

Noncancerous calcifications might result from a bump to the breast to which you paid little attention. Or a minor breast infection could have caused them.

If the doctor feels that evidence points more in the direction of cancer, then he or she will ask for an immediate biopsy. If the doctor feels more certain that they are not cancer signs but is not completely certain about that call, a repeat examination at a later date is a reasonable position to take. Neither the interpreting doctor nor your personal doctor would ask for a delay if there was any chance that the inaction would harm your health.

-- M.T. ANSWER: Cellulite is beneath-the-skin fat that forms small puckers due to crisscrossing fibers similar to but not the same as scar-tissue fibers.

The fiber-puckered fat gives the involved skin a lumpy-bumpy appearance.

Laser treatments, radiofrequency wave treat-

ments and ultrasound have been used for removing cellulite. These are cosmetic procedures and likely are not covered by insurance. Innumerable creams are advertised for cellulite reduction, but I can’t tell you if they work. I would be cautious about trying any that are costly. Weight loss makes cellulite less obvious. You are best served by consulting a dermatologist. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past several days, my left eyelid has been twitching. There’s no pain. It does not affect my vision. Does it mean anything? -- T.P. ANSWER: Not usually. Eyelid twitches result from spasms of muscles controlling eyelid movement. It’s intermittent and lasts for a few days, at most. Fatigue, stress and caffeine have been implicated as causes. I have had such twitching, at times when I was neither tired nor stressed nor drinking caffeine.

If the twitching is bothersome, soak a washcloth in warm water and apply it to the closed eyelid. Smoked Ham with Fresh Strawberry Sauce Perfect for a buffet any time of year. We created this impressive glazed ham for winter entertaining, but it has become an Easter favorite as well.

1 (12-pound) smoked whole ham, fully cooked 3 pints strawberries 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 jar (10- to 12-ounce) orange marmalade Radish sprouts or watercress sprigs, for garnish 1. Remove skin and trim some fat from smoked whole ham, leaving about 1/4 inch fat. With knife, score fat covering on ham crosswise, just through to the meat, into 1-inch-wide strips. Place ham on rack in large roasting pan (about 17 by 11 1/2 inches).

Insert meat thermometer into center of ham, being careful that pointed end does not touch bone. Bake ham in 325 F oven 3 to 3 1/2 hours until thermometer reaches 140 F (15 to 18 minutes per pound). If ham browns too quickly, cover with a foil tent.

2. About 30 minutes before ham is done, prepare strawberry sauce: Reserve 1 pint strawberries for garnish. Hull remaining strawberries. In 3-quart saucepan, mash strawberries. Stir in brown sugar, cornstarch, salt and orange marmalade; cook over medium heat until mixture thickens slightly and boils, stirring frequently.

3. To serve, place ham on warm large platter.

Arrange radish sprouts and reserved whole strawberries around ham. Serve with sauce.

Serves 24.

Passover Leek and Olive Bites Take advantage of leeks, in season in spring, with these Passover-appropriate appetizers.

3 leeks, each preferably 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter, white and pale green parts only, trimmed 1 tablespoon margarine or butter, cut up 1/2 cup water 1/4 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves Salt Pepper 15 pitted Kalamta olives, cut in half 30 kosher-for-Passover crackers, such as Tam Tams 1. Cut each leek crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick rounds; keep rounds intact. Place in large bowl and cover with water. Gently swish to remove any grit. Lift out leeks into colander. Repeat with fresh water at least once or until leeks are clean. Drain in colander. Pat dry.

2. In 12-inch skillet, melt margarine on medium. Add leeks in single layer. Cook 5 minutes or until browned.

Turn carefully and add water, thyme, 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Heat to boiling. Cover and cook 5 minutes or until leeks are tender. Uncover and, if necessary, cook 2 minutes longer or until water evaporates. Center rings of leeks will rise; gently press back into place with back of teaspoon. Remove from heat and cool 10 minutes or until warm room temperature.

3. Top each cracker with 1 leek slice and 1 olive half. Serve immediately. Makes 30 bites (2 bites per serving). Ñ Each serving: About 55 calories, 2g total fat (1g saturated), 0mg cholesterol, 100mg sodium, 8g carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 1g protein.

By Samantha Mazzotta Attic Vents Present a Pesky Problem Q: Recently, I found that sparrows had built a nest not just under the eaves of my house, but inside the crawlspace under the roof. I had pest control remove the nest, and now I plan to seal up any gaps or openings under the eaves or leading into the attic. How best do I go about this? -- John C., Framingham, Mass.

A: You don’t want to seal up every opening in the attic and crawlspace area, as many of the openings play an important role in maintaining the health of your home.

The spaces between the exterior and interior living area of a house -- attics, crawlspaces, the gaps between the outside wall and the interior framing and drywall -- make up what’s known as a home’s “envelope.”

Airflow into and out of this envelope is as important as the other components you’ll often find inside, such as insulation.

Home plans provide for open vents spaced around the exterior of the house, which allow air to flow naturally into and out of the envelope. This constantly moving air keeps the space between your living area and the outside of the house from getting too hot or too cold, and more importantly, keeps moisture from becoming a problem. Excess humidity within the envelope can, over time, cause some very expensive problems, including mold.

Of course, you don’t want pests using these vents to move into your home, because they, too, can cause quite a bit of damage.

To protect the crawlspace and the health of your home, find and note all of the openings and vents in the eaves and soffits, the crawlspace and attic, and the basement or lower crawlspace of your home. Note the condition of each: is a vent in place? Is there just an opening with no protective vent? Or does the opening look like a damaged area rather than an intentionally placed opening? Once you have that diagram, then you can purchase what you need to install proper vent covers that will enable airflow while discouraging pests, and repair any exterior damage before interior damage becomes a problem.

Even with protective measures in place, you still will need to inspect the area at least twice a year, typically spring and fall, for evidence of animals or other pests trying to make your home their home.

HOME TIP: What’s the difference between eaves and soffits? Eaves sit at the edge of a sloped roof; soffits are the flat underside of a roof ’s overhang between the exterior wall and the eaves.

Clint Eastwood passed on playing a washedup rock star to direct. In 1953, MGM star Judy Garland had a nervous breakdown, and while she was recuperating in a rest home, MGM fired her. When she emerged from the sanitarium, her husband, Sid Luft, hired George Cukor to direct her in “A Star Is Born.”

In l932, Cukor directed “What Price Hollywood?” which starred Constance Bennett as a waitress who falls for a washed-up movie director. In l937, the non-musical, black and white “A Star Is Born” was made with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, which Cukor refused to direct because of its similarity to “What Price Hollywood?” But the chance to direct a Technicolor musical with Judy Garland proved irresistible. The results yielded Golden Globe Awards and Oscar nominations for Judy Garland and James Mason.

In the l976 remake, Barbra Streisand wanted Elvis Presley to star with her, but his manager, Colonel Parker, thought it was

too close to his own life at the time, so she settled for Kris Kristofferson and an all-new soundtrack, including “Evergreen,” which won Oscars for Streisand and Paul Williams.

As in Streisand’s version, the male lead is an alcoholic rock star on his way down. Leonardo Di Caprio, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackson were considered until a Warner exec showed Tom Cruise’s scenes from the upcoming film musical “Rock of Ages” to Eastwood. The script is being reworked to add the interracial romance. Will it add new dimensions, as it did in the Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner film “The Bodyguard” (‘92), or overpower the classic story? *** If you don’t know who voices the Dodge Ram pickup truck commercials, we can tell you it’s movie star Sam Elliott. Sam wined and dined his former publicist Esme Chandlee for her birthday at the uber-popular Cecconni’s Restaurant in West Hollywood.

Dining on risotto and short ribs, they reminisced about their 40 years together before Esme retired. Sam spent most of the past year in Portland, Ore., looking after his mom, who recently left us.

PHOTO CREDIT: Graphic provided by myplate.gov Get Your Plate Into Shape When it comes to exercise, the phrase “I need to get into shape” is a familiar one. But what about getting your dinner plate into shape?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture last year released MyPlate as the new food-group symbol to provide Americans with an easyto-understand visual of what their plates should look like at meals. Eating is meant to be enjoyable, but it’s important to be mindful of the portion size and content of foods. Find creative ways to make your plate look like the MyPlate symbol, with half of the plate consisting of fruits and vegetables, onequarter lean protein and one-quarter whole grains, with a side of low-fat dairy.

Here are some tips to get you started with shaping up your plate: --Think about the size of plate you use when eating. Does it resemble a serving platter or a saucer? Try switching to a 9- or 10-inch plate. If that still looks large and provides too much food, decrease the size again. Your plate will look fuller even though you are actually eating less food, thus lowering caloric intake and assisting in weight loss. Pile your plate with nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meat, beans and whole grains.

--Sometimes our eyes deceive us when it comes to filling our plates. We think we only ate one cup of ice cream when we really consumed three cups. Measure out different foods into the dishes you use at home -- fill your cereal bowl with one cup of dry cereal, put one-half cup of brown rice on your plate and fill your favorite glass with 8 ounces.

Note how the different portions look in or on your own dishes.

This also gives you a reference to use when eating away from home. Portion sizes at

restaurants are typically much larger than recommended and provide extra calories, fat and sodium. Consider preparing meals at home to have more control over what ingredients are being used in your food (i.e. less salt, less butter, leaner meat) and the portion size served.

--Beverages also make up our “plate.” The type of beverage and amount consumed can add significant calories to our caloric intake.

Fruit juices and drinks, sports drinks, soda, drinks with added sugar like sweetened tea and coffee all provide additional calories. A large (32 ounce) soda typically contains 430 calories and a large (32 ounce) sweetened iced tea contains approximately 400 calories.

Limit the high-calorie drinks to special occasions and include more water, low-fat milk and low-calorie drinks.

Use MyPlate as a tool to decide what foods and how much of each should be on your plate. “Get Your Plate in Shape” and find new ways to make mealtime more healthful and enjoyable.

SPICED PORK WITH SPINACH SALAD Crisp flatbread can round out this satisfying salad supper. You can serve the seasoned pork as an entree with the salad topped with sliced oranges along with a side of brown rice or whole-wheat noodles, if you wish.

1 (1-pound) pork tenderloin, trimmed 1/2 tablespoon Sriracha (hot chile sauce,

such as Huy Fong) 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon salt Cooking oil spray 3 cups baby spinach leaves 2 cups thinly sliced Napa cabbage 1 cup red bell pepper strips 1/4 cup low-fat sesame ginger dressing (such as Newman’s Own) 1. Cut pork crosswise into 1/2-inch slices; flatten each slice slightly with hand. Combine Sriracha, sugar, poultry seasoning, garlic and onion powder, and salt in a bowl, mix well. Add in pork, tossing to coat well.

2. Heat a large nonstick skillet over mediumhigh heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add pork mixture to pan, and cook 3 minutes on each side or until done. Remove from heat; keep warm.

3. Combine spinach, cabbage and bell pepper in a large bowl. Add sesame ginger dressing; toss well. Arrange 1 1/2 cups spinach mixture in each of 4 shallow bowls; top each serving with 3 ounces pork.

• On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower is dedicated in Paris. Gustave Eiffel’s tower was greeted with skepticism from critics, who argued that it would be structurally unsound. Within a few decades the tower came to be regarded as an architectural masterpiece.

• On March 26, 1937, America’s first monument to a comic strip hero is unveiled in Crystal City, Texas. The 6-foot-tall, brightly colored concrete statue of Popeye was unveiled in Popeye Park during the city’s second annual Spinach Festival.

• On March 27, 1964, the strongest earthquake in American history, measuring 8.4 on the Richter scale, slams southern Alaska, creating a deadly tsunami. Some 125 people were killed and thousands injured. The tidal wave devastated towns along the Gulf of Alaska and caused carnage in British Columbia, Canada; Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States.

• On March 28, 1979, the worst accident in the history of the U.S. nuclear power industry begins when a pressure valve in the Unit-2 reactor at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania fails to close. DEAR BETH: The American Kennel Club recently released its registration statistics for 2011, which revealed that among registered pets, the Labrador retriever was the most popular breed in the United States.

In fact, the Labrador retriever has held that top spot for 21 years. The Yorkshire terrier placed fifth among AKC registrations.

Now, this may or may not settle the argument. Unregistered dogs, of course, aren’t on there, nor are many adopted shelter pets. But it’s a pretty good barometer of the type of dogs, in terms of size, behavior traits and other elements, that currently are popular among owners.

Farther down the list -- more than 100 breeds were ranked -- you’ll find the various terrier breeds, such as the Boston terrier (No. 22) and West Highland white terrier (No. 35) to name a couple. Breed popularity tends to jump around: Bulldogs ranked No. 19 a decade ago, but today sit at No. 6.

At any rate, take the loss in stride.

Make peace over a frosty beverage, and take comfort in knowing that the most popular dog for you is the one you choose (or that chooses you).

• In a 1982 issue of the magazine American Film, a writer named Chuck Ross claimed that he retyped the screenplay to the 1942 film “Casablanca,” changing only the title and one of the character’s names, and submitted it to 217 agencies. Of the 85 who responded, only eight recognized it as “Casablanca,” though it seemed familiar to another 25. Three of the agencies thought it might be commercially viable, while one thought it should be turned into a novel.
