My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Writing this little column is generally an easy thing for me to do.

I'm not trying to force an opinion on anyone through the editorial, but rather am sharing stories about things I encounter in day-to-day life in Pincher Creek and the communities I now visit on a regular basis.

Sometimes the stories are based simply on life experience or meant to share a giggle or a sentiment.

When the week has been particularly jam-packed it can be a struggle to decide what I'd like to focus on.

That was the case Monday when I made my first attempt to write. Monday evening was no better as a few more things had coloured the day!

I went to bed trying to decide what I would write about, and still found myself rambling first thing in the morning.

When I checked my email I found a gem more important than the ideas which had been forming in my mind.

You may recall a story in our Feb. 1 edition about Linda Hammond and her preparation to travel to Costa Rica to assist a Habitat for Humanity project.

Linda has arrived in Costa Rica along with her sister Diane Miller of Calgary, and their work has begun.

Here is the message Linda sent home:

The first thing I need to say about the

first day of the build was that I was too tired to write this email last night.

Jeff would be proud, Diane and I dug holes all day with a spade and a posthole digger.

I laughed because these tools I do not like to use at home. And yet, here we were digging away hole after hole.

The couples that we are building for are very young and in extreme poverty.

They both have a couple children and are in their 20s.

The husbands work on a farm that is nearby, making only two, maybe three dollars an hour.

Many of the people in this village work on orange farms nearby or don't work at all. There are not a lot of jobs in the area.

Some families go out and work when it is time to pick beans or oranges and work so they can have food for a couple days. They work long hours just for food that day. No saving money, no careers, just a job that will feed the family.

The village is near the Nicaraguan border, Santa Elena, an hour drive north of La Cruz.

Memories of yesterday – we have a great group, we all worked well and hard, when the wind is not blowing it is very hot. I am out of time, but I will try and write more tonight.

Grace and Dan Sibbald Livingstone School happenings The fundraiser for Shaylee Zeller, organized by Turning Pointe Dance Studio, with assistance from a number of our staff, was a tremendous success.

It was wonderful to see Shaylee, who has been in the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary since October.

The generosity of our community is outstanding and we hope all of the support shown will give Shaylee the strength she needs to get well.

Shaylee, while in the hospital, has been able to maintain her exceptional academic status in Grade 12 and has been chosen as our class valedictorian.

"A Bird in the Hand" TREX art exhibit is on display in the Livingstone School library from April 23 to May 23. Members of the public are invited to enjoy this excellent exhibit by Alberta artists.

Festival of the Stars showcases local talent Students of Turning Pointe Dance Studio in Hillcrest strutted their stuff on stage Sunday at the Festival of the Stars.

An endless list of adjectives could be used to describe the performances, including energetic, breathtaking, pure fun, diverse and spectacular.

The dancers demonstrated not only their talent, but also their passion for dance, shown by the broad smiles on their faces. They are all performers in their own right.

Most students attend four to six classes each week, and their dedication came through in the polished performances.

Pieces were choreographed by instruc-

tors Tara Fenton Groves, Christina Samson and Kandis Span, and dance forms covered in the numbers included ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, musical theatre and hip hop.

The show provided an opportunity for students to practise their solos, duets, and small group performances prior to the Great Canadian Dance Challenge, a competition in Lethbridge, May 3 to 6.

The annual recital turned into something extra special this year as all proceeds from the show, a lasagna dinner and a silent auction will be donated to assist dancer Shaylee Zeller. She has been a patient at Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary since last fall.

"It was so special because of Shaylee," says Tara. "It gave a different vibe to everything, and the kids were more excited than nervous with the focus on her."

"It was a great day for everyone," she adds.

The year-end show will be June 2 and 3 at the University of Lethbridge theatre, and tickets for the two matinee shows will be available at the studio this Thursday.

Parents will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the show, and teachers will be able to focus on the dancers, with a professional crew looking after the audio, lights and setup.

Oh, the horror!

By Amber Lee Mohl JW Schnarr is a talented author of intense horror stories and novels. His writing makes his name synonymous with terror, blood and unsettling character developments. And guess what? He lives in a community near you.

That’s right – JW Schnarr is alive and well, making his home in Claresholm.

When he’s not considering the demise of his next horror story characters, he keeps busy as a reporter and photographer for the Claresholm Local Press.

As a young boy, JW was a big fan of horror books and eventually found himself writing stories for fun.

Originally from Calgary, he studied journalism at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and, ironically enough, sold a story to Chicken Soup for the Soul. Before college, he placed a couple of stories in small-press magazines, “otherwise known in the industry as ‘for the love’ markets,” he shares with a laugh.

JW worked in construction for a while, and after a seven-year hiatus from

writing he began dabbling in it again, as a hobby. He sold stories here and there but collected “quite a few rejection letters in the process,” he says.

An injury gave him some time off and, in order to stave off boredom, he started up his own small publishing company. It was then he took the initiative to put together Shadows of the Emerald City, an anthology of horror stories based on The Wizard of Oz. Continuing with his quirky take on classic stories and characters, he created his latest novel, Alice & Dorothy.

“I came up with an idea too big to use as just a short story,” he says.

His hard work paid off, and JW is proud to say his latest work has had really good response.

JW is working on a new novel, Big Pig, and says, “It’s a combination of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead.” The scary part – or best part, depending on your perspective – is that this horror story is set in southern Alberta.

for his next release, Bloodbath, as well as the short-fiction collection Things Falling Apart, which will be reissued by Five Rivers Publishing later this year. On top of all his novel and short story horror writing, JW also contributes a monthly column to Black Glove Magazine, a horror blog.

Team effort leads to rescue of Jacob and Anja Pincher Creek Search and Rescue received a call at 8:40 a.m. April 15 from a Lethbridge paramedic, requesting assistance to organize a search for Jacob and Anja Oosterwijk.

The couple hadn't returned home the previous evening from a day trip to Fernie. Family and friends were concerned by how out of character it was for them to be out of touch with their children.

"Normally we don't go out unless we're tasked by an agency such as the RCMP, because we're not covered for liability," says Pincher Creek SAR president Janet Jones.

The reality of a situation like this, though, is that people will go out anyway. An organized effort lessens the chance of others becoming lost and makes the search more effective.

A command base was set up in Pincher Creek to help direct the volunteers in their search.

"This situation drew a huge number of spontaneous volunteers," Janet says. On Sunday, April 15, 75 volunteers showed up, and the number grew to 120 on Monday.

Wuth and Bryan Sundberg, provided their expertise by assigning tasks and search areas to the volunteers and tracking their results and progress.

Because the couple's exact direction of travel was not known, obvious routes were cleared first.

"With the huge response from volunteers wanting to assist in the search, it was impossible for us to do more than just co-ordinate."

Volunteer command posts were set up in Sparwood, Magrath and Nanton as volunteers searched into British Columbia and as far north as Bragg Creek.

Once the group was officially tasked

by Pincher Creek Community Emergency Management Agency, they were covered legally for liability.

Later on, the RCMP formally tasked Pincher Creek SAR, which became the primary tasking agency.

Monday evening, a public meeting was held in Fort Macleod with RCMP and Pincher Creek SAR. "We were able to explain what we had done and what we were going to continue to do," Janet says.

"We asked them not to send any more volunteers. At that point we had exhausted all possible locations in our area to a high probability. We needed to focus on planning and to ensure there weren't any gaps in the coverage area."

Tuesday morning, a few areas deserving a second look were checked out, and the first confirmation of location came through.

"We knew they had been in Fernie at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday," Janet says.

At this point Sparwood SAR took over.

Janet was on the phone with their command post when they had to hang up because they were receiving information about the Oosterwijks.

Jacob and Anja were rescued shortly afterward from their location about two hours north of Highway 3, on a forestry service road in the ElkoGalloway area.

"They were lucky," Janet says. "The things they found – the cabin, the food and the radio – were what they needed to survive."

"We don't usually get this many volunteers," she says. "When people are lost we usually find the vehicle and search outward, but in this case the people were found first."

Who needs the penny?

Members of the Rotary Club of Pincher Creek wonder what's in your piggy bank!

With the recent federal budget calling to stop production of the one-cent coppers, we'll all find ourselves looking for useful things to do with our coins.

At a club executive meeting a few weeks ago, Gerry Alex suggested it would be a great time to come up with a project involving pennies due to all the media attention the little coins were receiving.

Dan Crawford says he and Scott Korbett got pretty excited about the idea.

It made sense to see how the community would rise to the challenge of collecting pennies for the well-known Polio Plus program.

Two days later, Dan shared the idea of Pennies for Polio at a group meeting.

"Everyone was receptive, and thought it was a neat idea," he says. "It turns out a similar project was done in the past, but it didn't have the push of the government stopping production of pennies."

"The program is something the whole club can get behind and be active with in the community," Dan says. "This will raise awareness of polio, and hopefully the club can raise a significant amount of money which will change many lives."

Dan sees potential for the program to spread to other clubs within the district,

and even beyond. "In theory it could spread to clubs around the world and be a really big deal that starts in our community here."

The program will be up and running by early next week, with penny pails set up at all four banks in Pincher Creek – ATB Financial, CIBC, Pincher Creek Credit Union and Royal Bank.

Keep your eyes open for posters and pails as they are set up in other businesses.

Information will also be passed through the local schools.

"The more places we can get it out there, the better it's going to spread," Dan says.

It doesn't even take a handful of pennies to provide an oral vaccination for polio and potentially save a life.

Think how many lives you could change by emptying your piggy bank, bringing in those jars full of pennies gathering dust on the shelf, and checking under the couch cushions.

Wildrose bloomin’ in Livingstone-Macleod In dramatic fashion, Alberta voters gave the Progressive Conservatives their 12th straight majority mandate in Monday’s provincial election. But in Livingstone-Macleod, victory belonged to Wildrose candidate Pat Stier, who unseated PC incumbent Evan Berger.

Unofficial results Tuesday morning showed Mr. Stier with 8,565 votes and Mr. Berger with 7,403, in what was essentially a two-way race.

The new MLA, a rancher and landplanning consultant from DeWinton, will serve a constituency that now stretches from the High River area in the north to Waterton Lakes Park in the south.

Across the province, Premier Alison Redford’s Tories won 61 seats, Wildrose 17, Liberals five and NDP four.

FESTIVAL, continued from page 3 "I love producing this show, and the teachers and students are all excited about it," Tara says.

Karen Paton will be creating a new backdrop to go with the show theme, Our Favourite Things.

"The finale will be a feature presentation about love, peace and harmony," Tara says. "The other things don't matter!"

Turning Pointe attracts about 150 dancers of all ages from Pincher Creek to Sparwood. Instruction includes everything from tiny tot to senior levels in all disciplines, ballet exam preparation, and adult classes for both competitive and recreational dancers.

Rebecca Dewey is the only instructor who lives in the area. Tara, Kandis and Christina all travel significant distances to work with their students up to four days per week.

Crowsnest Pass Dance Festival Society supports the dancers by covering a portion of exam and festival fees and providing a scholarship.

Serve it up for Africa Staff and students at J.T. Foster School in Nanton are hosting a family volleyball tournament, supper and dance Saturday to raise funds for Hillside School in Malawi, Africa.

The volleyball tournament is open to anyone 12 years and over, and it's not too late to register if you contact the school today!

Entry fee is $100 per team, and prizes will be awarded for first and second place.

Beef on a bun and hamburgers will be served from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with a dance to follow. DJ services are donated by a local supporter.

"Businesses are donating and we hope to raise more from the family dance," says organizer Sue Moore. "It is a huge undertaking, but will hopefully be a fun community event."

Sue has been assisted by a committee

from student council led by Shayne Hill.

"She has been doing the lion's share of the work with me," Sue says.

Hillside School was founded by a retired teacher and her husband from the Nanton area.

The school has to pass government standards event though it doesn't receive any government funding, and currently J.T. Foster has been the school's major source of funds.

Funds raised in Nanton are sent directly to the school, with no middle fees.

The two schools email regularly with updates.

"They are actually making the bricks from scratch themselves," Sue says.

"Right now they are at the point of finding desks and supplies to open up."

"We sure hope to raise a bundle to send to our school," Sue says.

Time to pitch in Community initiatives are well underway for the 46th annual Pitch-In Canada Week.

Students from Canyon School in Pincher Creek have been doing their part, cleaning up designated areas around the community. Gloves and garbage bags were provided by the Town of Pincher Creek.

Organized cleanup efforts are being held over the next few weeks and everyone is encouraged to help out with the spring cleaning.

Motorists are advised to be alert for volunteer groups who will be out cleaning sections of ditch along the highways.

The theme of this year's campaign is Operation: Clean Sweep, and you can find information at www.pitch-in.ca .

While it was a testament to Pincher Creek that the grounds of the community hall were almost void of garbage, enthusiastic Grade 3 students from Canyon School were disappointed they didn't find much to fill their bags with. By Steve Becker FAMOUS HAND This deal occurred in a tournament played in France in 1963 to select the French representative that year to the annual European team championship. And quite a deal it was!

It started off innocently enough when Jacques Stetten, playing with Leon Tintner, opened third-hand with one spade. East bid two hearts -- he had values to spare for his modest overcall, but no better call was available -- and South bid three diamonds.

At this point, the bidding became frenetic.

North bid three hearts, a cuebid indicating a strong hand with a probable void in hearts, and East doubled. After two passes, North then bid four hearts! This was a further cuebid, confirming the heart void, and even more importantly, it urged South to bid a slam in either diamonds or spades, depending on his hand.

South quickly accepted the invitation by bidding six diamonds. True, South had only 10 high-card points (six of which he knew were wasted opposite North's void). But South also had a seven-card suit and a void in clubs that North could not possibly know about.

Not only that, but when East doubled, Tintner had enough confidence in his partner's bidding and his own values to redouble! East -- holding A-A-A-K -- no doubt thought his opponents had gone berserk and would pay heavily for their indiscretion.

But that wasn't how things turned out. Tintner easily made six diamonds redoubled for a score of 1,330 points, losing only a diamond trick, and poor East was left wondering what in the world had hit him. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

The fugitives turn a gathering of friends into a hostage situation that escalates when they call in the head honcho: their mom.

Rebecca De Mornay plays the mother with as much straight-laced menace as she can. The film is directed by a fellow who did some of the "Saw" sequels, and the overall tone and torture aspect land in that region.

This is not another adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, but you could have fooled me by the way the posters, previews and plot seem familiar. However, "The Vow" still has something to offer for the lover of sappy romcoms and seeker of movies for date night.

Paige's struggle is mostly about finding a life that makes sense to her -- a lot has changed for her in the five years that she doesn't remember. Leo's struggle is bringing her back to the person it took her years to grow into. Tatum has the charm and the abs to be a romantic-movie star, but he can't quite carry the dramatic weight of the story.

"Underworld: Awakening" (R) -- One can't be certain how many films there are

in this particular action-horror series, but this is certainly one of them. Kate Beckinsale takes up her role as Selene, a vampire lady who is frequently called upon to flip around and shoot things. The twist this time is that the human world has caught on to the existence of vampires and werewolves in the present day.

The movie sticks to a few notes. Everything is black with blue lighting. All fights are superhuman gunfights with bits of kung fu. All dialog is horrible and pointless. Sure, these movies are about the skintight black-costumed shootouts, but who says there can't be character development or an interesting plot to go with the full automatics?

"Mother's Day" (R) -- This remake of a bizarre 1980 horror film misses the mark for suspense and winds up with tedium instead. Three violent brothers break out

"Front Line" (NR) -- Set during the last days of combat during the Korean War, this film examines the horrors of war from a slightly different perspective. For a South Korean production, there are quite a few Hollywood tropes, but the film ultimately holds its own by looking at the final, brutal battles for the last hills up for grabs before the ceasefire. A South Korean bullet in one of the commanding officers prompts a murder investigation of a hardened company. The film knows that there is a grim absurdity in a murder investigation on the front lines of war.

Is Coupon Clipping Worth the Effort?

Clipping coupons can shave dollars off your grocery bill. While it might see like more trouble than it's worth, you can save serious money if you develop a plan and stick to it.

Start by checking the Sunday newspaper each week. Add up the value of the coupons you'll actually use and determine if it's worthwhile buying additional newspapers just for the ads. If products you regularly use have coupons, take that as an opportunity to stock up. Many stores run sales at the same time that coupons appear in newspapers, increasing your savings.

If you have a computer and a printer, a whole world of potential savings opens up, as there are dozens of websites devoted

to couponing. As a starting point on the Internet, check these websites to see if they appeal to you: www.coupons.com (click on Deals by State), www.dealseekingmom. com, www.redplum.com and www.fatwallet.com.

Many sites insist that you sign up with an email address, so create a separate email account just for couponing. You might need to sign up for a weekly or monthly newsletter that will include printable coupons. In other cases, once you sign in, you'll be able to print coupons immediately. Some ask for your ZIP code so the coupons can be targeted to stores in your area.

Set a goal for your couponing. Do just want to shave dollars off your weekly grocery bill? Do you want to concentrate only on the high-dollar items in your grocery bill, such as diapers or pet food? Will you use the extra cash for family fun, or put the money in a savings account, or use it to pay off credit-card debt? Knowing what your specific goals are can help you stay consistent.

Unless you find over time that you're extremely serious about saving money with coupons, don't fall for the DVD work-

shops and CDs that will teach you how clip coupons. You'll net plenty of savings with a modest effort that doesn't cost you anything. If you save $5 a week, that's $5 that stays in your wallet.

To decide if couponing is for you, spend an hour a few days a week searching online for coupons and clipping them from the newspaper. Try it for three weeks. Then add up your savings. Decide if a regular effort is a potentially significant money saver for you.

Plan a Family Career Day If you ask 4-year-old Axel Nelson, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" his first response might not be "a university librarian," but who knows where his career path will lead thanks to a few "going to work" outings with his grandpa Bryce, university librarian at Seattle Pacific University.

Do your kids really know what you do when you head off to work? To clear up the mystery, set a date and make plans to take them along. Introduce them to co-workers, show them around and have a snack or lunch together. They'll feel special and important wearing an ID or visitor's badge. And if you have an office or specific space, kids will be excited to

see their photographs or their original paintings displayed on your desk or wall.

If children are not allowed in your workplace during regular business hours, make arrangements for an after-hours tour.

Here are more ways you can share the idea of work with your kids: --Familiarize your children with the work skills of your ancestors. Compile a list of relatives, and interview them or gather information from your family tree. Was great-grandfather a farmer?

You may enjoy visiting a living-farm museum this summer to see what that job used to be like.

--For preschoolers, make a simple booklet together filled with pictures and brochures illustrating what you do during your workday. If you're an at-home parent, the book will show that caring for home and family also is important work.

The Other, Deadlier Kind of Stroke DEAR DR. DONOHUE: In October of last year, my husband, age 63, died of a brain hemorrhage (stroke). He was a youthful, healthconscious man, now sorely missed by his wife, family and friends. This tragedy was due to undiagnosed high blood pressure, since he, like many men, refused to visit the doctor. Please encourage people, especially 55 and older, to have a checkup so they don't suffer a similar fate. -- R.A. ANSWER: My sincerest condolences to you and your family. I've written about ischemic stroke, the kind that comes from a plugged brain artery. It accounts for most strokes. The letter-writer's

husband suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, one that comes from bleeding from a brain artery.

Hemorrhagic strokes have an abrupt onset. A person can be fine one minute, and the next there's a profound change. He or she can't move an arm or a leg, can't talk or has a sudden, severe headache. Shortly the person becomes unresponsive. For 50 percent of people with a hemorrhagic stroke, death is the final step, and it often comes quickly.

Differentiating a stroke caused by bleeding from one caused by artery plugging is not something for an untrained person to attempt.

Confronted by someone who has the signs of a stroke, an untrained person should call for immediate help.

As Mrs. R.A. points out, high blood pressure is one of the most common medical conditions responsible for a hemorrhagic stroke. Prevention of these lethal strokes depends on knowing what your blood pressure is. Keeping blood pressure in the normal range is the best way to prevent them. The trouble with high blood pressure is that it seldom produces any signs until it's too late.

Celebrate spring with a bright pasta dish full of vegetables.

Oats, almonds, and shredded coconut are baked into a crispy topping over fresh strawberries.

12 ounces whole wheat- or Jerusalem artichokeflour spaghetti 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium (6- to 8-ounce) onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 pint grape tomatoes 12 ounces asparagus, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces 1 medium zucchini, cut into half-moons 1/4 cup water Salt 1 can no-salt-added garbanzo beans (chickpeas), rinsed and drained 1 medium carrot, grated 1/4 ounce Parmesan cheese, grated (about 2 tablespoons) 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice Fresh basil leaves, for garnish 1. Heat 6-quart saucepot of water to boiling on high. Cook pasta as label directs.

2. Meanwhile, in 12-inch skillet, heat oil on medium. Add onion and garlic; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until golden, stirring occasionally.

Add grape tomatoes; cook 5 minutes or until beginning to soften. Add asparagus, zucchini, water and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cover and cook 5 to 7 minutes or until tomatoes begin to burst.

Stir in beans and carrot; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until beans are heated through.

3. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta cooking water. Drain pasta; return to saucepot and add vegetable mixture, Parmesan, lemon juice, reserved cooking water and 1/4 teaspoon salt; toss until combined. Divide among serving bowls; garnish with basil. Serves 4.

• Each serving: About 495 calories, 6g total fat (1g saturated), 2mg cholesterol, 375mg sodium, 95g total carbs, 18g dietary fiber, 22g protein.

By Samantha Mazzotta Cleaning a Rusty Grill Q: I left my propane grill out on the back deck over the winter. We didn't get much snow or rain, and actually used it from time to time, so I didn't cover it. Now I notice some rust on the underside of the grill. What's the best way to clean it and prevent it from happening again?

-- Janice B., Columbia, Md. A: You can buy a cleaner that removes rust stains at your local hardware or homeimprovement store, or if the rust is mostly surface-based, try wiping the area first with a damp cloth. If not all the rust is removed, try scrubbing the area with a steel-wire brush or steel wool.

If the interior of the grill or the grates are rusty or caked with old charcoal and burnt-on food, use the same cleaning methods to scrub them off. Then, clean the interior well (for readers who use charcoal grills, remove the old ashes and charcoal and then clean).

Once clean, you'll want to seal the rust-damaged areas. On the outside of your grill, a hightemperature paint will keep air and moisture away from the metal and won't flake away quickly. The interior should be cleaned between each grilling session and closed to prevent rain from entering. Grill racks should be washed after cleaning and each use, and a thin coat of cooking oil sprayed or rubbed on them so they stay rust-free between uses.

If you're not going to use the grill for a long time, say several weeks, regardless of the season it should be cleaned, covered with a grill cover and moved out of direct rain and sunlight.

Some owners coat the exterior of the grill with a thin coat of cooking oil if they plan to store it for some time.

HOME TIP: Got a tough cleanup of grill racks?

Make a foamy vinegar-baking soda paste and apply to the racks, let them sit for a few minutes, then scrub away burnt-on food and grease.

When David Selby of 2010's "The Social Network" joined "Dark Shadows," he was an instant sensation as Quinton Collins. But the man who caused the biggest sensation of all was Jonathan Frid, the Canadian actor who became an overnight star as vampire Barnabas Collins. Let's not forget Lara Parker, the beautiful but deadly witch, Angelique, and Kathryn Leigh Scott, who played Maggie Evans.

"Dark Shadows" fans had their prayers answered by the 1970 film "House of Dark Shadows," which had most of the original cast, including Frid, Bennett, Hall, John Karlan (who went on to star on TV's "Cagney and Lacey") and Kathryn Leigh Scott. That was followed a year later with "Night of Dark Shadows" with Selby, Jackson, Hall, Karlan and Lara Parker. In l991, NBC revived "Dark Shadows" as a series with Ben Cross as Barnabas Collins, Jean Simmons (of "Spartacus") as Elizabeth Collins, British horror queen Barbara Steele as Dr. Julia Hoffman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as David Collins.

Unfortunately, it ran only one season.

Farmers markets and grocery stores are bursting with strawberries. Strawberries are always a nutritious choice and a wonderful treat. The strawberry got its name from the common practice of growing berries under straw to protect them from winter cold and late spring frosts. A member of the rose family, the strawberry sometimes gives off a rose-like aroma. Many speculate about how the luscious fruit was discovered. It is known that the strawberry goes as far back as the Romans and perhaps even the Greeks.

Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that may reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. It helps protect the skin from bruising, helps heal cuts and keeps gums healthy. One cup of strawberries provides 3 grams of fiber and only 46 calories. Strawberries also have potassium, which can help maintain a healthy blood pressure.

When picking or buying packages of strawberries, look for ripe, shiny and brilliantly colored berries without any soft or brown patches. Never buy strawberries that are green or hard, or that look dry, dull or wrinkled. When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there is a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed.

Always dispose of any berries that have signs of mildew or are rotten, as they'll

contaminate the rest. Refrigerating strawberries ruins the flavor, and the strawberry aroma is easily picked up by other foods in the refrigerator. Store the berries in a cool place. Strawberries should be lightly rinsed, not washed before serving, and eaten as soon as possible.

This Strawberry and Spinach Salad with blue cheese crumbles and a balsamic-based dressing is a "berry" good way to serve strawberries.

STRAWBERRY AND SPINACH SALAD 1 pound baby spinach leaves, triple washed 2 cups strawberries, leaves and stems removed and sliced 1/2 small purple onion, sliced thinly 1/2 cup sliced almonds 2 ounces crumbled blue cheese In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together.

Dressing: 1/2 cup stevia or honey 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup olive oil

In a saucepan, heat the stevia or honey, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper and olive oil over medium heat until the stevia or honey dissolves. Remove mixture from heat.

When dressing is cool, toss with the salad mixture until well-combined.

Serves 4.

Is Dog Allergic to Fleas?

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My dog is possibly allergic to fleas. What herbal remedy is out there for me to use?

My vet has tested her for food allergies, but I don't think that's the problem. She's 8 years old and has eaten the foods the tests say she is allergic to, but she has developed the itching only recently. I use flea drops, shampoos, even predisone. The predisone seems to help the most, although you cannot use it for prolonged times.

Could it be stress-related? -- Ora M., via email DEAR ORA: Stress is one possibility in the puzzle that makes up pet allergies. But reducing your dog's stress might not be the only way to stop her itching and irritation.

You've worked with your vet to learn that her food is not likely the cause of her allergic reaction. That's a good

start. And you're right: prednisone is not a long-term solution to the itching problem, although it does help alleviate symptoms.

Fleas are another possibility. Have you observed fleas on your dog's coat or skin, or found the tiny black or brown specks known as flea dust?

Even if you don't see evidence of fleas, treat her to prevent the pests and reduce the likelihood of fleas around the house by vacuuming twice a week -- carpet and furniture -- and washing linens, pillows, curtains and other items that are tempting flea residences.

Stress could be a byproduct of the allergic itching. You can try a homeopathic treatment such as Rescue Remedy, usually adding five drops to her water dish once per day. But talk to her vet as well about other ways to reduce her stress levels to see if that helps clear the itchy irritation.
